Walt Disney studios had previously adapted Sheila Burnford's classic animal-adventure novel The Incredible Journey in 1963, and the story proves just as durable in this popular 1993 version, in which the heroic trio of animals are given voices provided by Don Ameche, Michael J. Fox, and Sally Field. They don't actually speak (like the clever critters in Babe), but we hear their "voices" as the lost household pets--Shadow the golden retriever, Chance the bulldog, and Sassy the cat--survive a harrowing series of adventures as they struggle to find their way home. Perfect entertainment for kids, this frequently clever movie offers an abundance of wildlife and beautiful location scenery, and the vocal performances by Ameche, Fox, and Field are surprisingly effective. A hit with parents and children alike, the film was followed by a sequel in 1996. --Jeff Shannon

Japanese filmmaker Masanori Hata made this above-average family film about a dog and a cat--friends with a tendency to make mischief--who go on an unanticipated adventure when one is rushed downriver and the other follows. Hata, who took four years to complete the work, relies on purely cinematic storytelling techniques (these animals don't have human voices on the soundtrack), making the film an international favorite. Dudley Moore narrates, but the film works because Hata's filmmaking fundamentals are so good. Kids love this, but adults can easily appreciate and enjoy it, too. --Tom Keogh

4 out of 5 stars milo and otis, a classic.......2007-09-10

loved this movie as a kid, so when i found it, i immediately snatched it up. and at a ridiculously cheap price. i would like for my kids to have this to watch one day instead of less wholesome things that are out nowadays.

5 out of 5 stars A long time favorite.......2007-08-27

I saw this when I was very young and very recently picked up the dvd for like 5 bucks. I just had to. I havent seen it in forever, but I still remember loving it. Its really cute and sincere. You cant help but smile. I know I did some research on it and read that it took over 2 years to actually film this movie because of all the animal training. Really tricky stuff. But well worth it. My 2 year old niece cried when watching it and thought they were being mean to the poor animals, but then she watched it again and loved it. So, yes, I still recommend this to very yound children, especially if they love animals.

5 out of 5 stars So Cute!.......2007-07-27

I loved this movie when I was little and still love it to this day! It is a very cute movie with a good plot and good characters.

Meet the Parents found such tremendous success in the chemistry produced by the contrasting personalities of stars Robert De Niro and Ben Stiller that the film's creators went for broke with the same formula again in Meet the Fockers. This time around, Jack and Dina Byrnes (De Niro and Blythe Danner) climb into Jack's new kevlar-lined RV with daughter Pam (Teri Polo), soon-to-be son-in-law Gaylord (Stiller), and Jack's infant grandson from his other daughter for the trip to Florida to meet Gaylord's parents, Bernie and Roz Focker (Dustin Hoffman and Barbra Streisand in a casting coup). The potential in-laws are, of course, the opposite of Jack, a pair of randy, touchy-feely fun-lovers. The rest of the movie is pretty much a sitcom: put Bernie and Roz together with Jack, and watch the in-laws clash as Gaylord squirms. As with the original, there is a sense of joy in watching these actors take on their roles with obvious relish, and the Hoffman-Streisand-Stiller triumvirate is likeable enough to draw you in. But the formula doesn't work as well in Fockers mostly because much of the humor is based on two obvious gimmicks: Gaylord Focker's name, and the fact that Streisand's character is a sex therapist. As a result, the movie itself is more contrived and predictable, and a lot less fun than the original. The casting is grand, but one wishes more thought was put into the script.--Dan Vancini

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars One Hilarious Focker.......2007-09-17

Meet the Parents is one of those Ben Stiller vehicles that's so slapstick in its hilarity that it can actually make you feel uncomfortable. It's funny, but it's almost disturbingly funny, such that if you make the mistake of imagining yourself in Greg "Gaylord" Focker's (Ben Stiller) shoes, you want to hide under your seat.

Meet the Fockers takes the conceit of the original movie one step further. Greg's already met his fiancée's (Pam Byrnes, played by Teri Polo) family, including Pam's pleasant mother Dina (Blythe Danner), her nephew Jack (Spencer and Bradley Pickren), and her domineering father Jack (Robert De Niro). It's now time for that momentous meeting that all engaged couples dread: the family meeting. It's time, finally, to meet the parents who named their son Gaylord Focker.

Thus begins a road trip down to Florida to meet Greg's parents, played hippie pitch-perfect by Barbara Streisand as Rozalin (a special kind of therapist for older couples who want to be more intimate) and Dustin Hoffman as Bernie, the over-supportive, super-pal of a dad. Mix the Byrnes with the Fockers and stir.

The additional twist is Little Jack, representing a flashpoint of parenting debate. Jack's childrearing is strict and disciplinarian one hand (the Byrnes hand, if you couldn't guess) and the free-love, do-it-if-it-feels-good empowerment of the Fockers.

Streisand and Hoffman are the real treat here. Their parental struggles and angst, or lack thereof, are what make the film. If you're a fan of either, you won't be disappointed.

If you are recently married or have a kid, the movie's struggle over childrearing is a very funny debate indeed. If you don't, then Meet the Fockers is probably only mildly amusing. Since my son was born the same month I saw his movie, it had particular comedic resonance, and my parents (who are definitely Focker-types) and my wife laughed all the way through.

1 out of 5 stars These movies are not funny.......2007-07-15

I didn't finish Meet the Parents. It was stupid, both literally and metaphorically. It was not funny. It was boring. Thank god I only rented it. I just shut off Meet the Fockers. I was expecting SOMEthing because it has Streisand and Hoffman in it. That's why I rented it. I didn't finish it either. These movies are boring, belabored, obvious and unfunny. Stupid people need entertainment too. But that's what television is for.

4 out of 5 stars Pretty good sequel.......2007-07-07

This was a good movie. I wasn't sure if I was going to like it or not. I liked Meet the Parents, but you never know about sequels. I will say this one was good and did what good sequels do. It takes advantage of character development to get to more jokes. I think you could probably enjoy the movie even if you hadn't seen the first, but I think it helps to understand a bit about the relationship between Jack and Gaylord.
The basic premise of the movie is that Pam's family has to meet Greg's family. Jack, being straight laced and stoic as he is, isn't ready for the affectionate Focker family. The family seems to be getting along well until Jack shoots Gaylord with Sodium Pentathol, truth serum, and he reveals a lot of things during speech. Things get tumultuous. The thing I like best, and this is kind of a spoiler, is how dedicated Pam is to Gaylord throughout the movie and she stay dedicated and in love throughout. She doesn't act particularly well, I thought, but it was touching.
I would recommend this movie if you liked the first.

3 out of 5 stars Not nearly as good as the first one........2007-05-30

This sequel suffers from "not that funnius". The original movie had me laughing uncontrollably at times. This one is OK, but for some reason it just doesn't work. It feels like it tries to hard and despite an awesome cast, it just doesn't work.

5 out of 5 stars A great sequel to one of the best comedy films ever!.......2007-05-07

Without a doubt, a great sequel to one of the best comedy films ever!

As if the chemistry between Robert DeNiro, the father in law of Greg Focker, played by Ben Stiller, a male nurse that married the woman of his dreams, played by Teri Polo was not enough to make a classic comedy... Bernie and Roz Focker join this winning team!

Meet the Fockers is a superb sequel to Meet the Parents. Now, it is the turn for the bride's parents, Jack and Dina Byrnes, played by De Niro and Blythe Danner, to meet the groom's parents.

With Gaylord and Pam, they travel in their new RV to Florida. They also bring with them their infant grandson from their other daughter, and the kid delivers some of the best lines of this film... Still to today... when we want to laugh, we find ourselves saying.... Ash-whole!!!

Gaylord's parents, Bernie and Roz Focker, played by Dustin Hoffman and Barbra Streisand are simply magnificent. As with great comedy, they play opposites to DeNiro, and rather than strict and controlling, they are care-free, touchy-feely... fun-loving parents.

You should not miss this movie if you want to laugh and enjoy... one of the great sequels to one of the best comedy films ever!

This movie follows the unwritten law of sequels: bring back the same characters and put them in similar jeopardy with slightly tweaked circumstances. Instead of a cross-country journey, this time the pet trio must get from the San Francisco airport across the Golden Gate Bridge to their suburban home. Michael J. Fox and Sally Field return as the voices of Chance the bulldog and Sassy the cat, with Ralph Waite replacing the late Don Ameche as the elderly golden retriever. Their journey features dogfights, house fires, an epic battle with a pair of petnappers, and a love affair for Chance with a stray from the other side of the bridge (Carla Gugino). Sinbad voices another dog who guides them through the mean streets of the city by the bay, and Robert Hays stars as the father, but, frankly, that hardly matters. What does is the animals' banter, and they're funny. (Ages 3 and up) --Kimberly Heinrichs

Description

Your favorite trio of talking animals is back in this action-packed Disney adventure that'll have the whole family bursting with excitement and laughter! Michael J. Fox, Sally Field, and Ralph Waite supply the voices of Chance, the American bulldog; Sassy, the Himalayan cat; and Shadow, the golden retriever -- and Sinbad speaks for their newfound canine friend, Riley -- in this critically acclaimed sequel to Disney's now-classic HOMEWARD BOUND: THE INCREDIBLE JOURNEY. When the pets accidentally get separated from their vacationing owners, Chance, Shadow, and Sassy navigate the mean streets of San Francisco, trying to find their home across the Golden Gate Bridge. But the road is blocked by a series of hazards, both man and beast. It's another incredible journey for three very brave, very lovable pets, in a thrilling, funny adventure that's 'bound to please' (New York Post) the entire family!

5 out of 5 stars GREAT family movies.......2007-01-02

This movie is great ALL my kids loved it from ages 9-16 and even us parents enjoyed it alot. SUPER FUNNY and heartwarming.

4 out of 5 stars Those Lovable Critters are Back!.......2006-07-03

This movie is the third movie that Disney has made using the same theme. The first was 1963's "The Incredible Journey." The second was essentially a remake of the first, "Homeward Bound." In the remake the animals talked rather than having a narration. This movie capitalizes on the success of the original with a variation on the theme of the original.

This time our three friends, Shadow, a golden retriever, Sassy, a Himalayan cat, and Chance, an American bulldog escape from their cages at San Francisco International Airport, thinking they are going to "the bad place," though they are actually heading for a vacation. Once their family arrives at their destination, they learn the animals have escaped and arrange to return home to find them. We see very little of the family after that except to see their concern and a few moments at the end of the movie.

The focus is on the antics of the three critters. Chance, voiced by Ralph Waite, is always focused on getting home and being safe. Sassy, voiced by Sally Field, is aloof and sarcastic, taking every advantage of spitting out a one-liner about any particular situation, most especially anything involving Chance. Chance, voiced by Michael J. Fox, is the oblivious goofball who attempts to interpret everything he sees in his own bizarre, usually wrong, way. Chance makes a perfect target for Sassy's barbed comments.

We follow the three animals, who really are friends, as they journey through San Francisco, trying to locate the Golden Gate Bridge and the way home. Along the way they encounter dog thieves looking for laboratory dogs, a fire, mean dogs and friendly dogs who do not understand how these three could want to go back to humans because of the experiences these strays have had with humans.

This story has everything you could want in an adventure story about dogs. There is love, humor, and a happy, nearly hilarious ending. While this story is not quite up to par with the original or the remake, it is readily worth watching with the kids more than once, especially if you are looking for an easy laugh. Even the youngest children in the family will enjoy this one, especially after the brief moments when things look dark for the animals. Just be prepared to say no when your little ones ask for a puppy or a kitten. Enjoy!

Product Description

He s cynical, lazy and, literally, a fat cat. Now, Garfield, America s favorite feline, is about to become a major motion picture star, in a film with broad-audience appeal. The live action giCGI picture is adapted from the syndicated carton strip read in 2600 newspapers by 260 million readers around the globe. In his film debut, Garfield s owner, Jon, takes in sweet but dimwitted pooch Odie, turning Garfield s perfect world upside down. Now, Garfield wants only one thing: Odie out of his home and life! But when the hapless pup disappears and is kidnapped by a nasty dog trainer, Garfield, maybe for the first time in his life, feels responsible. Pulling himself away from the TV, Garfield springs into action.

Every now and then, the CGI effects in Garfield: The Movie are less than perfect--which makes you realize how astonishingly seamless the rest of the effects are. When Garfield's owner, Jon (Breckin Meyer, Clueless), agrees to take in a homeless dog so as to flirt with a sexy veterinarian (Jennifer Love Hewitt, I Know What You Did Last Summer), Garfield does his best to oust the dog from the house. But when a greedy television performer (Stephen Tobolowsky, Bossa Nova) kidnaps the mutt for his own nefarious purposes, Garfield sets out on a rescue mission. Garfield is a terrible movie, yet there's something weirdly compelling in its awfulness. Bill Murray (Rushmore, Ghostbusters), who voices the fat cat, has mastered a comic style that wallows fondly in ridiculousness. Perhaps, seduced by the siren call of Murray's voice, the audience can only marvel at the sublime junk of our culture. --Bret Fetzer

3 out of 5 stars Garfield is Okay.......2007-07-07

It is a decent little movie. I think kids would like it, although I don't know if you can really appreciate the movie unless you are familiar with the comic. The basic premise is that Garfield lives with Jon and he is a fat lazy cat, no surprise. Jon has been taking Garfield to the vat a lot so he can flirt with the veterinarian, Liz (played by the ALWAYS gorgeous Jennifer Love Hewitt). Liz needs to find a home to a less than intelligent dog, Odie. Garfield gets very jealous of Odie and eventually locks Odie out. Well, Odie runs away and Garfield feels bad. Liz & John (who of course are developing a relationship) go out searching for the two animals. All the while, Garfield knows who has kidnapped Odie (a deranged pet performer who saw Odie dance at a dog show) is chasing after Odie. The chase ends up at the train station and a cat at the controls. Good, clean fun.

Overall, as I said, a good flick. I don't know that I would buy it or see it again, but I was glad to rent it. The chase story reminded me a lot of Toy Story 2, but that is okay. If you liked the comic, I think you will like the movie. The most interesting thing is that we learn that Jon can not hear Garfield. I always wondered this, but Garfield says it very clearly early on in the movie.

5 out of 5 stars My son LOVES this movie.......2007-04-03

My son (and me and my husband) thought this movie was so funny! Especially if you have cats and understand them. It really plays on the way cats act compared to dogs. Its really hilarious in parts. A good clean fun movie for the whole family.

5 out of 5 stars Very goodo movie... for the whole family!.......2007-03-13

Overall the DVD was good and very much appropriate for young children. However, after a couple of weeks it had fallen to the back of his preference list. We've not watched it in over a year now. I guess this isn't so different from any other DVD we have.

I would recommend this for young children. it does have a few scenes that very concervative parents may term violent. The movie is mostly an original concept and follows the exploits of Garfield and Odie that we all grew up with.

The mix of animation and real animals/actors/acresses create a unique experience for all. This is really a great movie!

    5 out of 5 stars A Really Great Movie.......2007-02-23

I have seen this movie many times and I think that it is really great. Liz and Jon should be diffrent so they could match the comics, though. EAT CHICKEN BRAINS!!!!!!!!!!!! I'M CRAZY!!!!!!!!! YOU KICKED MY DOG!!!!

5 out of 5 stars Murray at his best!.......2007-01-06

Most comedians end up selling-out and doing cheap, shallow-humoured movies because their careers are slowing down and they need the cash. I would never do that, and Bill Murray hasn't either (not the only thing we have in common, we were also born in the same month!).

Garfield brings some much needed sass to the big screen. And I'm glad he's animated, because that means he won't have any dander (I'm allergic to cats). Just kidding!! (get it? even if it was a real cat, it would be on the movie screen, so I wouldn't be allergic. it wouldn't matter if he was computer generated or real!)

I only caught the first half of this movie because I was getting tired and I still had to watch "Garfield - A Tail of 2 Kitties" that night - my friends and I were doing a Garfield marathon.

Anyways, Murray is a 10. Garfield is a 10. Move over Arbuckle, the fat cat is back Jack!

One of the most memorably offbeat romantic comedies of the 1990s begins when a talk-radio veterinarian named Abby (Janeane Garofalo) takes a call from Brian (Ben Chaplin), the owner of a roller-skating Great Dane. Brian is intrigued by Abby's voice and asks if she'll agree to meet him. Insecure about her looks and her nonexistent love life, Abby agrees, but describes herself as a tall blonde, then begs her attractive neighbor Noelle (played by Uma Thurman) to meet with Brian in her place. The ensuing case of switched identity is complicated when Noelle takes a liking to Brian who, of course, thinks she is Abby. This confusion gains comedic momentum when Abby safely plays herself on the radio and in a long, hilariously seductive phone call with Brian, but by now the situation has grown hopelessly complex, and Abby has to find a way to reveal herself without disappointing Brian. Many viewers rightly complained that the movie relies on the assumption that Abby is unattractive, even though Garofalo is more attractive and appealing here than she'd been in several movies before and since. Still, this contemporary variation on Cyrano de Bergerac is a lightweight, good-natured surprise that values the quirks and foibles that make lovelorn romantics (including their pets) uniquely appealing. --Jeff Shannon

    Description

Charming and bittersweet, this modern-day romantic comedy starring Uma Thurman, Janeane Garofalo and Ben Chaplin, explores the beguiling perils of mistaken identity.

Abby (Garofalo), a savvy, witty veterinarian who hosts her own radio talk show, is anything but confident when it comes to love. A petite brunette, she describes herself as tall and blonde when Brian (Chaplin), a caller who is smitten with her radio persona, asks her on a date. She then talks her tall, blonde neighbor Noelle (Thurman) into assuming her identity, setting off an escalating series of hilarious and romantic crises.

The Truth about Cats & Dogs is one of the better films of the '90s. This film is so true to life that it kinda hurts. Jeanne Garofalo plays the so-called ugly duckling to the glamorous, long-legged Uma Thurman. The two have little in common but both of them fall for a charming brit played by Ben Chaplin. This film is so cute, I never get sick of watching it. This film makes you think and you might just see a bit of yourself in it. I highly recommend The Truth about Cats & Dogs. Enjoy!

5 out of 5 stars hilarious and true.......2007-07-08

This is one of my favorite romantic comedies ever. In the Roxanne tradition, except with women rather than men playing the switcheroo. Garafalo and Thurman are wonderful together, and there's a lot of truth in the premise that men may fall for the tall fabulous felmale first, but it's the conversation & connection that keeps 'em around. Also does a pretty good job of showing the downside of being a stunning amazon woman, like Thurman (who's a lot smarter than she plays here). Highly recommended.

3 out of 5 stars The Truth Must Be Told: I like this romantic comedy that echoes "Syrano de Bergerac".......2007-05-02

Janeane Garofalo stars as Abby, a veterinarian who has her own radio show. She is a cultured, educated woman, who is smart, has a good sense of humor and makes a great living. The problem is that her self-esteem is low because she does not find herself attractive being 5'1 brunette who once upon a time while in college had gained 40 pounds. Well, she looked like she lost all of them and she was charming if you ask me (perhaps, it is solidarity of another 5'0 brunette ) but when she developed a relationship over the phone with one of the callers, she tells him that she is 5'10" statuesque blonde who is hard to miss. The blonde (Uma Thurman) happened to be her next-door neighbor, the aspiring model/actress who agrees to go on the date instead of Abby... It may sound like cliché, and the film has several holes in the plot but is very enjoyable thanks to wonderful performance by Janeane and to these words:

"You know how someone's appearance can change the longer you know them? How a really attractive person, if you don't like them, can become more and more ugly; whereas someone you might not have even have noticed... that you wouldn't look at more than once, if you love them, can become the most beautiful thing you've ever seen. All you want to do is be near them."

3 out of 5 stars A good movie that I would not want to see twice.......2007-04-11

Good actresses, interesting plot. It is a nice comedy, just not one that I would choose to watch again. My 14-year old daughter loved it though and would watch it again! You will have to see for yourself...

3 out of 5 stars Cats and Dogs.......2007-04-11

What a heartbreaker! For a minute ten years back it seemed as if Janeane Garofalo would break out and jump to the head of the pack. She was burning down the house trying to beat the Parker Posey record of having made the most consecutive movies within a twelve month period. Then came this movie and she was forced to confront the Garofalo ceiling, that there would be no big future for her in the movies. People just didn't warm up to her enough. She was funny and sassy and had that amusing deadpan face Sarah Silverman later rode to the top.

And yet there was something smug and repulsive about her, and this movie showed it in spades. She played a radio talk show host and dog expert, who gave sarcastic advice to pet owners about their dogs and cats (hence the title) and who fell in love with the handsomest British man in town. And yet he preferred Uma Thurman to her! Then she decides to masquerade as Uma Thurman--never a bright idea, and one certain to backfire on you. Actually Garofalo isn't a bad looking woman, maybe a little hunched together like Judy Garland but that worked for her in general, but in THE TRUTH ABOUT CATS AND DOGS there were too many uninspired Michael Lehmann shots of her nose to nose with a pitbull or boxer, far too many visual comparisons of her as a dog. Few stars could walk away from this constant barrage unscathed and, of course, she wasn't quite a star. And plus people felt cheated, they had plunked down their $9 to see an Uma Thurman movie, and instead of Uma, the camera was constantly going to Janeane Garofalo! Indeed Uma hardly appears in the last half hour of the movie and none of the remaining characters even mentions her existence! Plus how humiliating for Uma! The credits list "Acting Coach for Uma Thurman," an indignity none of the other actors had to endure. What they should have hired was a "Personality Coach for Janeane Garofalo."

The dog is super cute and they should have just called the movie, "Hank," it would have been a modest success instead of a monster flop.

Jamie Foxx just twiddles his thumbs and glowers in the stereotypical "black best friend" part. What a waste of talent. If Foxx hates white people this must be the reason why and who could blame him!

How can you hate a movie that features ninja Siamese cats wreaking havoc with their kung fu prowess? That's one of the highlights in Cats & Dogs, an effects-laden family film that mystifies cat fanciers by casting dogs as the undisputed heroes in all-out warfare with nefarious felines. Hidden headquarters and high-tech gadgets are featured on both sides of this age-old battle. On the feline side, the longhaired Persian Mr. Tinkles (voice of Sean Hayes) plots to sabotage the efforts of Professor Brody (Jeff Goldblum) to discover a cure for human allergies to dogs. On the canine side, stalwart shepherd Butch (voice of Alec Baldwin) trains the mistakenly recruited beagle puppy Lou (voice of Tobey Maguire) to foil Mr. Tinkles's scheme--a mission that begins when Mrs. Brody (Elizabeth Perkins) adopts Lou for her son Scott (Alexander Pollock).

Using combinations of live animals, animatronic puppets, and digital wizardry, Cats & Dogs has just enough imagination to match its effects, climaxing with a feline global-domination scheme involving mice sprayed with chemicals that will make all humans allergic to dogs. Goldblum and Perkins gamely play second fiddles to this menagerie of mayhem, and as madcap "realism" gives way to cartoonish fantasy, the movie escalates into utter chaos, burdened by lame jokes but highlighted by a furry supporting cast including a Saluki hound (voice of Susan Sarandon), a shaggy sheepdog (voice of Michael Clarke Duncan), and a Chinese hairless techno-geek named Peek (voice of Joe Pantoliano). Though never as charming as the Babe movies, Cats & Dogs is harmless fun--especially for dog lovers. --Jeff Shannon

A great kids movie with good actors (Elizabeth Perkins and Jeff Goldblum). Obviously far fetched since there are animals that talk but really very funny even for adults!

5 out of 5 stars From Russia with Love.......2007-04-25

You can see other reviews for the general plotline, but I'd like to give a hearty second to the idea that this movie is fun for the whole family.

My wife and I love it. My 8-year old loves it, and my 2-year old loves it. There are many subtleties you can catch upon multiple viewings, which is a good thing as my daughters like to watch this movie over and over. There are many great one-liners and performances, but "The Russian" is easily my favorite character. Sean Hayes is also awesome as "Mr. Tinkles".

5 out of 5 stars Who Rules and Who Drools?.......2007-02-12

This is a fun flick to watch for all ages. Comical yarn about supposed secret war between canines and felines for control of the owner population. In the middle is an unsuspecting scientist looking for cure for dog allergies, and the replacement dog for his family, an unsuspecting beagle.

Fun to watch. Delighted to hear that families like to watch multiple times. Kids of all ages who like their humor without the sordid language and violence problems will enjoy this one.

1 out of 5 stars Horrible and misleading........2007-01-27

I saw this movie in theaters when I was 9 because it seemed like a cute story: Cats and dogs in a fight with each other to take over the world. BOY were those commercials misleading. Even back then, I HATED all of those stupid cats and dogs and race cliches. You don't know how tired I am of seeing evil siamese cats that look asian and have funny accents. I would never want my children watching this garbage. It'll just teach them how to hate cats and make fun of asians and russians. There was no humor in it either. None of the jokes were funny.
