Legendary sex symbol Carroll Baker (BABY DOLL, THE SWEET BODY OF DEBORAH) stars as a mysterious sorceress with an undying hunger for sensual ecstasy and unspeakable torture. But when she casts a spell over a beautiful young fashion photographer (the gorgeous Isabelle De Funés), Milan's most luscious models are sucked into a nightmare world of lesbian seduction and shocking sadism. Are these carnal crimes the result of one woman's forbidden fantasies or is this the depraved curse of the devil witch known as BABA YAGA?

George Eastman (THE GRIM REAPER) co-stars in this provocative EuroShocker (also known as DEVIL WITCH and KISS ME KILL ME) written and directed by Corrado Farina and based on the notorious S&M comic Valentina by Guido Crepax. Blue Underground is now proud to present BABA YAGA restored from pristine vault materials and packed with eye-popping Extras, including never-before-seen erotic outtakes from the Italian Censors archives as well as the director's own private collection.

1 out of 5 stars The cast is totally wrong.......2005-12-23

If you are looking for Kiss Me Kill Me with Stella Stevens and Bruce Boxleitner, this is NOT IT. Both Blockbuster and Amazon have the wrong cast for this movie version. This KMKM is an Italian Fetish movie, not exactly what I was looking for. The KMKM version starring Boxleitner and Stevens has never been made into a retail version.

5 out of 5 stars Surprisingly cool "experimental" horror art film - a real cinematic find.......2005-12-22

This is not your typical horror movie by any stretch of the imagination. It is more likely to appeal to fans of Fellini's more extravagant works, of Antonioni or Nic Roeg. Plot involves a stylish young fashion photographer who attracts the attention of a creepily stylish witch (Carroll Baker looking like a beautiful reanimated corpse). Yes, the key word is STYLE. Director Corrado Farina is a director of the first order. His camera savors every image, intercut in a myriad of textures to create a fluid montage of erotic and disturbing imagery. Horror fans might find this an interesting curiosity but film lovers should appreciate it on a much higher level. Like Donald Cammell-Nic Roeg's "Performance" this film exploits the nature of cinema masterfully, transcending its purported genre. Its use of solarized desaturated stills predates the famous "Aha" video by two decades, and much more artfully. Farina sensuously assaults you with his imagery, moving from pop to Goth to pure art in the wink of an eye. If any of this sounds even vaguely tempting, dig up a copy and treat yourself to a slice of cinematic heaven. Sadly, like the equally brilliant and iconoclastic Donald Cammell, Farina seems to have been grossly under-appreciated in his time, yielding only a few films as his legacy.

3 out of 5 stars Kiss me, Kill me.......2005-08-09

While the movie was good. It wasn't the edition I was looking for.

4 out of 5 stars A creepily atmospheric Italian horror film.......2005-07-11

Italian horror movies invariably seem to have a special look, sound, and feeling of baroque creepiness that make them successful. I'm not so sure that Kiss Me, Kill Me (aka Baba Yaga, aka The Devil Witch aka Black Magic) is really that great of a movie, but its dark atmosphere makes it satisfyingly effective. Based to some degree on a dark comic strip, the movie's noticeably surreal quality is greatly enhanced by a haunting musical score as well as the use of grainy black and white pictures of events unfolding at certain critical times. Isabelle De Funes plays Valentina Rosselli, a photographer living in Milan. On her way home one night, she encounters a very strange lady who calls herself Baba Yaga (played by Carroll Baker). This stranger tells Valentina their meeting was predestined, and she quickly insinuates herself into the life of our protagonist. Baba Yaga, we quickly learn, is some type of witch, and she certainly looks the part in costume as well as appearance; her pasty complexion and almost-white eyebrows standing out in contrast to her red lipstick-coated mouth does make quite an impression. Valentina tries to go about her work, which involves photographing semi-nude women, but Baba Yaga gradually puts her under her spell. She has strange dreams; quite unusual things begin to happen when she takes pictures with a camera that Baba Yaga has fondled; a strange doll Baba Yaga gives her begins to seem like something more than a normal doll. The tension and suspense is carried along quite nicely throughout, but the conclusion falls a little short of making this film an unqualified success.

This is a movie best suited for adults because it does contain a fair bit of nudity, but the sex, violence, and gore is actually rather limited. Gory and erotic are not words I would use to characterize this film at all. In fact, there is essentially no blood to speak of, and the one scene of violence is not as extreme as it might first appear. Kiss Me, Kill Me generates its horror from the atmosphere it creates, and in this endeavor it is largely successful. In one very nice scene, Valentina watches an old silent movie about a golem, but the golem connection to the doll Valentina is given may be lost on some viewers lacking a foundation in old-fashioned horror. Still, though, the doll in and of itself is creepy enough to be effective. If you don't have an interest in horror at all, there is a good chance you won't enjoy Kiss Me, Kill Me. For horror aficionados, the movie stands ready to help meet your daily requirement of creepiness, but your rations of blood and gore must be obtained elsewhere.

4 out of 5 stars Pretty nice ARTSY-FARTSY little flick.......2005-03-31

If you just wanna see a pretty cool little flick, then I recommend this movie. If you get this movie expecting to see a horror flick, then you will be disappointed. This movie is just plain hip. The acting in the film is pretty good, as well. And of course, this Euro-flick delivers a good bit of nudity for all you spankers out there.
The movie is based on an old Italian comic book about a photographer who has a weird spell put on her by a woman named Baba Yaga, a sort of voodoo gypsy. It's not much more than that, but it's still pretty hip by today's standards. The DVD offers a good bit of extras, too. Recommended.

Description

BASED ON THE INFAMOUS REAL-LIFE MURDER CASE THAT SHOCKED THE WORLD!

When the mutilated corpse of a young woman is found on an Australian beach, retired detective Thompson (Oscar(r) winner Ray Milland of THE LOST WEEKEND and DIAL M FOR MURDER) involves himself in the investigation. But before they can find the killer, the police must first identify the victim. Who was this once-beautiful girl found clad only in yellow pyjamas? Why would the authorities put her nude body on public display? What sexual depravity did she endure before her murder? And even if Thompson can crack the baffling case, will he survive to see her killer brought to justice?

Mel Ferrer (THE ANTICHRIST, NIGHTMARE CITY), Howard Ross (THE NEW YORK RIPPER) and the luscious Dalila Di Lazzaro (FLESH FOR FRANKENSTEIN, PHENOMENA) co-star in this unique giallo written and directed by Flavio Mogherini and featuring a pounding score by Riz Ortolani (MONDO CANE).

3 out of 5 stars Put On Your PJs .......2006-07-25

On the books this film is a giallo, but it is only in the most basic sense. Yeah it's a murder mystery, it deals with sexual themes and it's Italian. That's where all comparissons end though. No rampaging killer with gloves and a hat/hood and no real body count to speak of other than the Pyjama girl herself. Sure there are a few more deaths, but not until the end of the film. There are basically two plotlines running throughout the film. The first is the investigation into the dead woman that's led by two detectives(one of them Ray Milland). Once the second plot begins, it ends up taking up about 75% of the film. This deals with the yummy Dalila Di Lazzaro(yummy except for the armpit hair) trying to juggle three lovers. She sleeps with just about everyone but poor Milland. The film pretty much becomes a drama in the Lifetime Original Movie vein. No suspense, no killer stalking anyone. In fact, as you get more and more tangled into the story, you nearly forget there was a murder mystery at the heart of all this! Ray Milland seems to just diappear about an hour into the film. Before you know it, you're asking yourself, "Hey, wasn't Ray Milland in this film?" It's like Milland only had a two day shooting schedule and his time ran out before director Mogherini could shoot all his scenes. His character is funny though. Even with my complaints, I was never bored with this movie, just not terribly impressed. But if anyone should find it boring, you can always dance around your living room to the funky Riz Ortolani score. The disc has a half hour documentary about the actual Pyjama girl murder case which is actually more interesting than the film.

2 out of 5 stars "Pajama Girl Case" Italian Giallo Review..........2006-04-06

I haven't seen this flick yet but a cousin of mine has. This is his short review: As a die hard giallo fan, i have been greatful to see movies of the genre beginning with Mario Bava to Argento more contemporary giallos. This is why i was excited to find out that Blue Underground recently released four new giallos. In short i have been pleased with three of the movies but one, the Pajama Case. It's starts off good but quickly fades into an unsuspensful drama. Even though there is good, charasmatic actors there is no violent deaths of any kind that i have become accustomed to. This movie is only for the true die-hard giallo collector.....

John Cassavetes's long, free-form drama is best appreciated as a good showcase for Gena Rowlands, playing a woman whose sanity literally appears to be shattering as different aspects of her personality eclipse others at various times. Peter Falk plays her struggling, blue-collar husband, trying to understand the phenomenon and sometimes losing his patience. As with most of Cassavetes's works as a director, one can't help but find one's attention drifting in and out (especially at two and a half hours), but Rowland's performance is a key reason the film has been declared a "national treasure" by the Library of Congress. --Tom Keogh

Description

A tough-minded, moving film about a working-class housewife's mental breakdown caused by imposed social rules. This insightful study of sexual politics earned both Gena Rowlands and John Cassavetes an Oscar nomination. Gena Rowlands, Peter Falk, and Matthew Cassel.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Get under this film's influence, now!.......2007-09-14

Coming from a background in improvisational theater, Cassavetes has the ability to write film scripts that show us exactly how far conventional storytelling has wandered from reality. Rather than doing this, as the early postmodernists would, by defying the conventions of narrative, Cassavetes chooses to defy, primarily, the conventions of scene framing and dialogue scripting. If you eavesdrop on a conversation between two people who know each other, you are likely to catch them at a moment where one is referring to something that the other has said in a previous conversation, and also employing irony, and also tonally begging the other to excuse the fact that he is beginning to employ such irony with a regularity that threatens to dull the other's perception of his character. John Cassavetes is unafraid to start a scene with this type of exchange, rather than imposing the situation-simplifying and character-stilting type of directness into his scripts that often causes perceptive viewers to suspect that the characters in a scene are not speaking to each other, but rather to the audience. The result of this technique, in his various films, has been mixed, but in A Woman Under The Influence, he really manages to make the viewer empathize with unedited reality, by sculpting a story from large chunks of it, and telling the story in the way it would have been likely to happen, rather than the way it would have been likely to be told.

This can all seem incredibly self-conscious at times, because Cassavetes' attempt to remove the character of the filmmaker from his script in A Woman... is the one thing which most prominently stands out. It requires an acute awareness of his medium for an artist to attempt what Cassavetes has attempted here, and the attempt itself is likely to provoke the usual maelstrom of shouts of "pretentious" from detractors of artists who seem to attempt to provoke particular reactions. But content-wise, A Woman Under The Influence is one of the least pretentious films ever created, and in my opinion, one of the most important.

4 out of 5 stars Courageous and Uncompromising Film.......2007-04-28

This movie is a breakthrough - courageous and uncompromising view at the family and at the marriage where both spouses love each other deeply but they are both not well, they don't know how communicate when somebody else present, even their own children. They could be happy on the deserted island but not surrounded by friends and families. I was fascinated by both, Peter Falk's and Gena Rowlands' performances. She looked like a little girl, trapped in a woman's body - confused, insecure, listening to what is inside of her. When she said to her children, "I hope that you will never grow up", she meant it because she never felt comfortable as a grown up. I could not take my yes off Rowlands. Her performance is on par with the best study of nervous breakdown I've seen, and this is Liv Ullmann in Bergman's "Face to Face".

Peter Falks was also a revelation - I love him as Lt. Columbo in the TV series but he is a completely different character here; in a way, he is as mentally unbalanced as his wife is. The fact that he loves her but never hesitates to abuse her makes him terrifying - you never know how he will act in the next moment, and he does not know himself. Directing and writing are absolutely first class, and I am very exited to see more films by John Cassavetes, the Godfather of American Independent film-making and a father of American "New Wave"

4.5/5

5 out of 5 stars Absolutely Unforgettable.......2007-04-07

I think the director hit the bullseye here.

Not co-incidentally the documentary "A Decade Under the Influence" was named after this film--showcasing those renegade filmmakers of the 1970s who defied Hollywood in their portrayal of realistic, sympathethic characters and the everyday living room dramas encasing them.

Gena Rowlands in her tour-de-force performace as the Woman Under the Influence, implied insantiy, but truthfully, just trying to function in the world around her--her blue collar foreman husband, her children whom she adores just short of pathology, and the enclosure of her housewife home.

it doesn't matter, at least to me, what drives her off the edge, just watch Gena Rowlands having that marvelous breakdown in her living room which we all deserve to have, fighting off invisible demons, while her dimwitted husband tries to deal with the unraveling of his wife. "Now don't go crazy on me" he reasons, while she just fights and lashes out against mental illness demons that seem to be coming in closer and closet to her physical space. See it and you will never, ever forget her piece of acting.

It's one of the greatest, most harrowing pieces of cinema I've ever seen. It's a slowbuild up, and the raison d'etre for it happens right under your nose. It speaks to the insanity of the times--a woman trying so hard to --again Im trying to rationalze what's happening here, but truthfully, you just have to see the film for yourself and see what's going and maybe make up your own mind,.

I see a complexity in the human spirit, and a challenge of wills, between the rational and the unrational,
all brought forth by Ms. Rowland. There's more to chew on and digest, but I suggest this movie for
its acting alone. I've never forgotten it and may write more on it here, but it's just one of those things that stands alone in time. Thank God this movie will never be remade, because it just wouldn't make any sense now but also for the very reason that the Mabel role belongs to no-one else than Gena Rowlands and Gena Rowlands alone.

4 out of 5 stars Worth Seeing.......2006-11-16

The relationship between Mabel and Nick is the heart of the film. Just when you think Falk is playing Nick as the ever-suffering patient husband, he shows the character to be much more complex. Rowlands as Mabel is even better - there isn't a facial expression or mannerism that's wasted. Her longing to connect with other people is almost painful to watch. Although several of Mabel's actions strongly imply mental illness, it's fascinating to think about the fine line between appropriate and inappropriate behavior among the characters. Why is Mabel's Swan Lake routine any crazier than the guys who burst into song at the dinner table? Why is her after-school party any crazier than the trip to the beach? I think it's too simplistic to just say it's sexism. Much more subtle, often unspoken rules and boundaries seem to be in play. I also appreciated Cassavetes's refusal to romanticize working class life. I know first-hand that there's warmth and humor and devotion to family, but often there's also a particular kind of brutality, close-mindedness, and helplessness that can deeply damage the lives of people who have to make a living out of their sweat.

5 out of 5 stars An American Masterpiece.......2006-07-06

There's not much else to say about Cassvetes' film other than it's a masterpiece of the dramatic arts. Unrelenting and fascinating, it depicts a young wife's descent into madness. It's a bitter slice of life, but it's also exactly that: life captured in all its pain and glory through artistry of the highest order. Gena Rowland's performance is probably one of the finest ever captured on film. If you enjoy this film, I also recommend tracking down "The Pumpkin Eater" starring Anne Bancroft - a similar film of a woman driven to breakdown by the cruel informalities of what we call love. Handled with sleek overtones of British filmmaking during the 60s, it may stand as a counterpoint to the gritty reality of America's great "Woman Under the Influence."

THE FINAL CHILLING CHAPTER IN THE BLIND DEAD SERIES

The classic saga of the BLIND DEAD ends with the creepy tale of a remote coastal town where frightened villagers must sacrifice beautiful virgins to the blood cult of the Knights Templar. For seven nights every seven years, these eyeless zombies rise from the sea to feast on human flesh as the souls of the damned are trapped in the screams of gulls. In this final unforgettable shocker from writer/director Amando de Ossorio, the mood is darker, the fear is stronger and the hunger of the Templar more ferocious than ever before!

This Definitive Edition of NIGHT OF THE SEAGULLS has been restored from original vault elements (including all of its scenes of extreme violence and nudity), remastered in startling High Definition, and features both the original English and Spanish language tracks for the first time ever on DVD!

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars End of a Saga.......2007-07-17

1977 saw the last installment of Amando de Ossario's Blind Dead Films. The Night of the Seagulls (aka Terror Beach) was a worthy end for a series that had been going rapidly downhill. Night of the Seagulls is however a vast improvement over the horrid Ghost Galleon.

As always the plot is fairly simple. A doctor and his wife (Victor Petit and Maria Kosty) move to a seaside village. Once there they are given strange warnings by the town's departing doctor and are treated with contempt by the local villagers. It seems that every seven years seven women must be sacrificed to the Knights from the sea in order to keep the town from being destroyed.

Dr. Stein and his wife hire a local girl, Lucy,(Sandra Mozarowsky) to be their servant. One night a neighboring village girl(Julie James) comes to the doctor's door in hysterics before being led off by the local village women in a strange procession. The doctor investigates and learns from the village idiot (Jose Antonio Calvo) about the sacrifices. The next night the villagers come for Lucy and the doctor intervenes and stops the Knights from taking their victim. As usual at this point everything falls apart and the doctor and his wife are attacked by the Knights. The ending has to do with the destruction of the Knights and a pagan idol which controls them.

Once again Blue Underground has done a fine job with the source material. The print quality is basically fine if at times a little soft focus. The audio is standard mono but clarity was good on the English dubbed version. The disc offers the original trailer and a stills gallery.

This is one of the least reviewed entries in the series and probably one of the least seen as well. This is a shame since it is also one of the better entries in the series. The acting is not great and the dialogue runs from the mundane to the just plain awful but the film has a curious ability to keep your attention for its relatively short run time. As with all the titles in this series, you should know what you are in for before spending the money and choose wisely. Well worth a rental for the creepy makeup and costumes. It is also good to see the Knights on horseback again and the riding along the beach scenes provide a iconic image for 70's horror fans.

Rent it.

1 out of 5 stars Sans character development.......2007-01-01

All we know about the protagonist in this movie for all but about the last 10 minutes, is that he attempts suicide by sleeping pills, and then via a flashback, that he is taken by a brief chance encounter with a "woman in blue" in a local shop and then becomes obsessed with finding her.

Most of the character development (what little there is) that goes on in this movie doesn't begin until 10 minutes till the end, when we finally get a little insight of what the character is feeling. Consequently, the movie really saves what little it has to say about dreams and love until then-- the director apparently being about as speechless and self-centered as the main character is.

In addition, the choice of soundtrack music often does not seem to reflect the mood of the scenes. While Pietro is a "musicologist," and much of the classical soundtrack is his choice of listening material, in the car, at home, etc., the tracks seem out of character with either the character's or the films moods. While one might argue that it shows the conflict in the character's emotions, a simpler and more plausible explanation is a director who's musical palette is as thin as the main character's emotional one.

I'd pass this one up-- mostly a waste of time. I had hope that it might instill some insights, perhaps new viewpoints about love, dreams and aging, but the movie in fact has very little to say...

3 out of 5 stars Chasing the Impossible Dream.......2003-08-21

Mario Piccoli plays a musicologist who is irresistible to woman and chases la grande inconnue all over Paris. I loved the Paris of 30 years ago, the French country side and the vignettes, like Simone Simon as Madam. Piccoli plays a narcissistic man who makes all the woman in this movie look ridiculous and who solves his problems ultimately with sleeping tablets. There are dreams and flash backs which confuse this story of an obsession. You must love veteran actor Piccoli very much to enjoy this DVD.

5 out of 5 stars An excellent early western with John Wayne.......2005-09-24

George Hayes didn't always look like "Gabby" in the early Lone Star Pictures productions from the early 1930s, but he certainly does here in Blue Steel in the role of the mustachioed, chawin' and spittin' sheriff Jake. He is hot on the trail of the Polka Dot Bandit, whose thieving ways are becoming legendary in the area. He thinks he knows who the bad guy is, having seen John Carruthers (John Wayne) messing around behind a recently emptied safe. The two men unexpectedly become partners of a sort, though, when a young lady rides up with a gang of outlaws on her tail. Both men quickly become involved with the travails of the local town, the population of which is without ammunition and almost out of food because of these same outlaws pouncing on every stagecoach that tries to approach with the necessary provisions. One of the town's most upright citizens takes the girl in and generously offers a decent sum of money to those townspeople who choose to leave rather than hang around to starve to death. There's gold in them there ranches, just underneath the topsoil, and a man who owned all of the land could do quite well for himself. Gabby Hayes and John Wayne are a dynamic duo, and the "surprises" each man holds back from the other one until the end make for some very interesting and somewhat humorous moments. Blue Steel may be your standard early western from 1934, but it is a most enjoyable movie to watch.

2 out of 5 stars ONE OF JOHN WAYNE'S MANY B WESTERNS.......2005-05-11

A TOWN ON THE BRINK OF STARVATION IS SAVED WHEN A MYSTERIOUS STRANGER [JOHN WAYNE] COMES ALONG AND DISCOVERS THAT THERE'S GOLD THAT SOME CRIMINALS DON'T WANT THE TOWN TO FIND OUT ABOUT. PREDICTABLE AND NOT ENOUGH ACTION. IF THE FILM HAD A LITTLE MORE ACTION TO IT, THIS ONE COULD'VE BEEN ALRIGHT. RECCOMENDED ONLY FOR DIE-HARD FANS OF JOHN WAYNE.
