4 out of 5 stars A must for any BH fan!.......2007-09-05

I would have rated this a five star, but it does not contain the whole first season and one of the Christmas episodes is missing. From what I understand, Vol. 2 doesn't have it either. But this is the first true collection that runs unedited with the theme song intact. I've tried cheaper versions, and the theme song is left out because they were too cheap to pay the royalty, and the picture looked like someone took a small camera and filmed it from the wall while a projector was running.
The picture and sound is excellent on this version. This fine collection includes a four page insert with excellent photos. This 4 disc version includes an introduction by the daughter of Paul Henning; Buddy Ebsen and Irene Ryan singing, a short documentary on Paul Henning and cast commercials. The eiposdes themselves are very crisp and clean looking. The original pilot is shown, though it was originally incorporated into the first episodes, so it may look familiar. It would be nice if they went by seasons, but the later episodes in the series became very goofy and somewhat ridiculous, though it beats watching it on tv with scenes cut and umpteen commercials.

4 out of 5 stars As funny as it can get........2007-07-12

The Beverly Hillbillies is such a unique and funny TV series. The actors and characters are the best you'll see in any TV comedy series. I believe these first shows are the best and full of belly laughs. All the plots are extremely well written and funny. I highly recommend this DVD for anyone looking to escape into a hilarious situation comedy. I continue to watch these shows over and over and enjoy them very much. Possibly, the only other TV sitcom that could compare with the Beverly Hillbillies would be the I Love Lucy shows.

5 out of 5 stars Very Entertaining.......2007-07-02

I was not sure if I wanted to pick this set up because of the idea that Paramount or whoever might put out their own, super-official set. But, I was in the mood to watch the show again and I gave this a blind buy, and I'm glad I did. The coolest thing here is the fact that original sponsor promos were in this one - I've never seen that stuff and I know it wouldn't be on an "official" release. So, even if the studio does put out something later, this is still something original and great. If only MPI could put out every episode.

4 out of 5 stars It's 100% Original.......2007-05-23

There are way too many other 'Beverly Hillbillies' dvd collections out there and I was reluctant to buy this one as I bought 2 other different collections of this show and the quality was poor and the opening/closing themes were not the original as seen on tv. This set and volume 2 are both 100% original shows as seen on tv. This includes original opening and closing them songs and they kept it in B/W as they were originally presented on tv (I do not like colorized versions of anything when it was originally shot in B/W). The quality of video and sound are great and I honeslty can't wait for next set of Beverly Hillbillies or Petticoat Junctiion to come out. Hey, as others say, there are a few shortcomings, but the quality and being the origianl shows easily overcome the issues that were written. I have had no problems with discs playing.

3 out of 5 stars reviewers fail.......2006-08-19

The show i gave three stars because of the theme song and the unaired pilot. The picture and sound are ok and after all these years the show still makes me laught.
To all the reviewer prior to me I give a big zero and thank them a lot for failing to point our that the episodes are not in color as advise on the amazon site but black and white.

Description

Jim Varney, Cloris Leachman, Lily Tomlin and Dabney Coleman star in the riotous rags-to-riches story of America's favorite backwoods billionaires. It features hilarious cameos by Dolly Parton, Buddy Ebsen and Zsa Zsa Gabor. Instant oil baron Jed Clampett moves Granny and his kin from the Ozark hills to Beverly Hills. Though unsophisticated, the Clampetts are decent, hard-working, trusting people- in other words, perfect marks for the swindlers, social climbers and gold diggers who can't wait to welcome them! Even their Fawning bankers, Miss Hathaway and Mr. Drysdale, may not be able to keep the Clampett cash from disappearing into the Hills!

5 out of 5 stars LUUUUUUUUUUUVED IT!.......2007-02-28

I disagree w/ other commenters that this movie had "dirty parts". OK, it wasn't Pollyanna; there were a few PG13 moments, but nothing to make you send the kids outta the room. They had to add a LITTLE spice, GEEZ!! It was made in 1993-far past the age of innocence! Anyhoo, the characters-
JIM VARNEY as JED-SHOCKINGLY WELL DONE, and VERY ENDEARING! I really wish he hadn't died, there's no telling what else he could have done.
CLORIS LEACHMAN as GRANNY-OH MY LORD, how is it possible to put into words WHAT A GREAT JOB SHE DID! The word HILARIOUS just doesn't cut it! Dare I say, SHE WAS A BETTER GRANNY THAT THE ORIGINAL, IRENE RYAN? THERE, I SAID IT! Whew, what a relief! I mean it too!
DEIDRICH BADER as JETHRO-VERY FUNNY! DIFFERENT than Max Baer, for sure, but still VERY FUNNY! Those big horse teeth really added to the redneck effect. I really loved the part when he & his mom Pearl were flying down the road, and she asked him didn't he order the new brakes yet, and he said "sure I did Maw, they're coming in next week"! He was funny as Jethrine too, although maybe just a little too pretty (?)
ERICA ELENIAK as ELLIE MAE-did a good job, pretty true to the character, although I couldn't get over how bushy her eyebrows were, but I guess that added to the hillbilly effect. She is a VERY pretty lady.
LILLY TOMLIN as MISS JANE-NAILED IT, NAILED IT, NAILED IT!!!!!!!!!!!
the same for DABNEY COLEMAN as MR. DRYSDALE, and whomever that was as MRS. DRYSDALE, and also the lady who played COUSIN PEARL. The rest of the cast-well, not very important.

5 out of 5 stars HILARIOUS COMEDY!!!!!!!.......2006-05-19

What can I say??? "The Beverly Hillbillies" is the funniest
movie ever! I'm not talking "KANGAROO JACK" funny, or "Ernest
rides again" funny, NO! I'm talking 11 OSCAR winning funny!

And the cast was perfect! Jim Varney as Jed, Deidrich Bader as
Jethro, Erika Eleniak as Elly May, Cloris Leachman as Granny,
and Lily Tomlin was an extra treat as miss Hathaway!

But, there was something different about it. Instead of the
family freindly jokes, they relied on ADULT humor! Can you
believe they said the word "SEX" in the beverly hillbillies
of all things!??!?!?!?!?

So I would not recommend it to anyone who liked the TV series
as a kid. This is a DIRTY, VULGAR movie and I cringed when I
watched this!

Still it's a reeeeeeaaaaaaly funny movie!

1 out of 5 stars Just one word describes this movie: AWFUL!!!!.......2006-04-23

don't waste your time watching this HORRIBLE, AWFUL movie!!! The acting, the dialouge, the direction, the casting...all HORRIBLE!!! This, along with "The Honeymooners" "The Dukes of Hazzard" and countless other movies that are based on TV shows, should be held up as prime examples as to why certain shows should never get the big-screen treatment. However, there is one bright spot: Lily Tomlin as Jane Hathaway, she captures the character perfectly, the way Nancy Kulp did in the classic TV show. But, the all-time worst performance is,without a doubt, Diedrich Bader (Oswald from "The Drew Carey show") as Jethro.

Don't waste money on this movie!!! Instead buy the DVDs from MPI. I'm just glad I didn't buy this, and instead rented it.

5 out of 5 stars I loved this movie. Funny,but dirty........2006-02-27

My name is Andy. I'm a huuuuuuuuuge fan of the classic tv series, "the beverly hillbillies". and I was surprised to see
this film on the 5 dollar rack in wal-mart. needless to say,
when I saw the DVD in my reach i was ecstatic! I begged my parents to buy it and they did! Jim Varney is my favorite actor. it was hilairious! on the scale of 1 to 5,this was shooting a 7!!! but there was one problem...it had WAAAAAAAAY
too much sexual humor. mainly between the bad guys. I counted 12 dirty things throughout the whole movie! One part was when the clampetts were on the freeway. Some guy drives up in a jeep and yells,"Nice wheels!"and gives them the finger. so, Jed says,"Jethro, what's that man a-pointin' at?" "I reckon that's
how you wave hi to folks in beverly hills." See what I mean?
also, I discovered that on the box it said "rated PG".For what???????? It didn't say! Heck, i'm only 12!!! Movie people think some bits of dirty stuff would just fly over kids heads!! I would recommend this to anyone who wants to see a funny movie. But I would not recommend it to anyone who don't want to let their children see a dirty film. don't see this if you're one of those people.

By the way, thanks for putting this child's form here amazon. now this is my first comment i've ever written online! Keep going amazon!

1 out of 5 stars Not the Beverly Hillbillies!.......2006-01-10

Captures none of the folksy comedy of the original series instead relying on bathroom humor. Don't waste your money or time. Spend your money on the TV series instead. Only thing worth mentioning is Lily Tomlin as Jane Hathaway who almost captures to a T the characterization of the original Nancy Culp. Otherwise, this one's a turkey and Jed would be a-shootin it!

4 out of 5 stars A Great Collection!.......2007-09-11

This continues from the Volume One collection, though it's very hard to tell whether this continues into Season 2 or not. The picture is very crisp and clear and audio is superb. Both collections (Vol 1 and 2) contains 53 epsiodes, plus you have to buy the "Ultimate Christmas Collection" that only contains one episode of the Beverly Hillbillies, when in the first season they flew back home on what they thought was a bus. But all three discs are well worth the price and is the only authorized and truly restored BH that you will find, and contains the finest episodes in the series. In the later seasons, the writing had gone downhill and featured goofy episodes where Phil Silvers tried to sell them parts of New York City and Washington.

2 out of 5 stars there are but 5 new episodes.......2007-08-09

I love watching the BH's and wish all episodes would be on the market.
These "new" collections are not new, but a few episodes, that have been out there for quite a while. What a disappointment.
A pity. I would have loved to have watched new episodes.

5 out of 5 stars Fine if you just want their Christmas episodes..........2007-09-11

If you're like me and following the Ultimate Collection series of the first episodes made, then this disc is a ripoff. You have to buy this to get two episodes not included on the Vol. 1 and 2 discs. But the episodes themselves are restored to their original run time and show the opening sequence, long missing, of Jethro driving the family in the truck past a Winston truck and waving at it, or looking at a Kellogg's cereal billboard. The two BH episodes are the one in the first season where the family comes downstairs on Christmas morning to find a tree with fake snow. Granny tells Jethro to climb on the roof to see where the hole is! A tv from Mr. Drysdale has Granny thinking it's a washing machine, since everytime she turns it on there are water skiers. The mishaps only go downhill from there. The second BH episode has the family flying home for the holidays. Mr. Drysdale arranges for them to fly home, and they think it's a super fast bus! Whether you want this just for the holiday episodes, or adding to the other collections, it is two hours of fun and extras that will brighten the holidays.

Oh what fun it is to ride on a first airplane ride with the Clampetts going home to the hills for Christmas!
Here are 2 Christmas episodes of the Beverly Hillbillies and one from its spin-off, Petticoat Junction. But wait! There's more!! Also included are some vintage commercials that aired with the original broadcasts. When was the last time you heard the now-way unPC jingle:
    o/~ Winston tastes good like a " " cigarette should o/~
As Jed Clampett would say: WoooooooooooooDoggies!
It's down-home-spun fun in Hooterville and Beverly Hills for the Holidays. /TundraVision, Amazon Reviewer

Yes,it includes the original themes to these shows, not the alternate themes used on the cheapo versions that are out there in the marketplace,a major plus!!! A great addition to Christmas/Beverly Hillbillies/Petticoat Junction collection!!! Fun for the whole family!!! Two thumbs up!!! Five stars!!! A+

5 out of 5 stars FESTIVE, FAMILY FUN WITH SOME NICE BONUS STUFF.......2006-04-16

These two classic country comedy shows from the 60s are true time pieces of a simpler time. But they are also amusing and extremely charming slices of Americana. Since MPI has released the only authorized "Petticoat" and "Hillbillies" DVDs to date (see their "Ultimate Collections" for both shows), these are the only DVDs to feature the wonderful theme songs that introduce each series over the opening credits. Also, Linda Kaye Henning, daughter of creator-producer Paul Henning and co-star of "Petticoat" (as daughter Betty Jo Bradley) provides informative introductions to all 3 shows on this DVD plus does a sweet Christmas greeting with co-star Frank Cady (known as Hooterville General Store owner Sam Drucker). There's also some original cast commercials from both series, including a great Jethro recitation of "The Night Before Christmas" for Kellogg's Corn Flakes. This DVD is a real treat and a great buy. (P.S. There's also another bonus - a Christmas episode from Henning's earlier series from the late 50's -- "The Bob Cummings Show/Love That Bob" with Dwayne Hickman and Rosemary DeCamp.

As these were two of my favourite comedy shows, it was a great pleasure to be able to watch these episodes again. I got a great deal of enjoyment out of looking at them. It is well presented and a must for anyone who likes good comedy just as I do. It has good information on how the shows were created which is a bonus to me. I would recommend this to anyone who like me enjoys watching these shows.

5 out of 5 stars Singing cowboy, atomic tech, mad brilliance!.......2007-08-18

This is one of my top ten DVDs (there are 2 separate DVDs to complete all episodes). Yes, I have to hold my nose as Gene Autry sings his ridiculous and twangy songs, but WOW, what a great idea for a movie serial... underground space men (and women), evil gangsters, great B&W western cinematography and cowboys (and cowkids) to the rescue. I have watched various versions of this serial (e.g., the movie RADIO RANCH) over the years but there's nothing like watching the whole thing. It takes hours to do so but you can go get a sandwich, let the video run, and come back to still figure out pretty much what happened. The beauty of any of the old serials is the level of action -- back in the 40s and 50s, they originally only showed these serials at the theaters at a rate of 1/2 hour per week so they had to cram in a lot of fights and narrow escapes. So, when you sit down for this complete cliffhanger marathon, there's never a dull moment. Yes, the plot is ridiculous but it's nostalgic escapism at its very best. If you were born in the late 40s or early 50s and loved Roy Rogers' TV episodes, you'll savor this mad masterpiece of a cult serial 'till your dying day. A steal at any price as far as I'm concerned!

5 out of 5 stars A classic serial to definitely get.......2006-08-06

This is a classic serial set in the same style as Flash Gordon and Buck Rogers. Definitely get it.

4 out of 5 stars The role that made Gene Autry!.......2006-06-02

"Phantom Empire" is a very cool concept all around. Half singing cowboy western and half extravagant (by standards of the day) sci-fi epic, it succesfully combined the best of two genres for maximum effect. Though young here, Autry is the same as in all his later movies: engaging and steady, acting just well enough to sell his character. The writing definitely slants toward youth here, but at the same time, it's internally consitent and not insulting to the intelligence of older viewers. Indeed, anyone in the mid-thirties should have been absolutely blown away by the scale of the story and the sheer number of unprecedented twists in the story. What a fine job all around. As an aside, the technology of the underground kingdom successfully predicts, among other things, guided cruise missiles and wireless phones! Looking for little things like that just adds to the fun!

The transfer is neither great nor terrible. Indeed, the picture is probably above average for such an old film, but the sound is disappointingly hit-or-miss. Even if a digital restoration of the film was cost-prohibitive, just balancing out the sound would have vastly improved the DVD quality at a very low cost (any home sound equipment tinkerer could have done it). For that, I deduct one star.

    2 out of 5 stars Caveat Emptor.......2005-08-23

There is also a two-tape VHS set of this serial put out by Passport Video, which is apparently a copy of the inferior DVD that has gotten such bad reviews here. Do not confuse this with the excellent VCI VHS set.

3 out of 5 stars DVD set 2 stars lousey xfer - VHS set 4 stars good copy!!!.......2004-04-06

This review is strickly comparing this newly released 2 DVD set from ALPHA VIDEO to the 2 VHS set from VCI Home Video.

First "The Phantom Empire" (1935) starring Gene Autry the singing cowboy was the first Western/Sci-fi Saturday matinee action serial. A very elaborate and fun story of an underground hidden empire of "Murania" lying 12000 feet below Gene Autry's ranch. This is some fun stuff. 12 cliffhanging chapters originally produced by Mascot Pictures. This preceded the later serials like Flash Gordon and Buck Rogers. The Phantom Empire runs for 216 minutes total is Black and White and is presented in Standard Format.

    Compared:

Alpha Video 2 DVD set - This is a non-restored direct transfer DVD. The results are horrible, grainy, dark and some times blurry picture. The sound is erractic and sometimes difficult to understand the dialog. The worst thing is the chapters are incomplete. Each serial ending or beginning are chopped resulting in the absense of the cliffhanger thrill of the story. If you must see this classic on DVD, Rent only!!!!!

VCI 2 VHS set - This is "The Phantom Empire" as it was ment to be seen. It is only VHS quality but so much better than the DVD set. The sound is much better and ALL 12 CHAPTERS are complete and the cliffhanging thrill is there to drive you on to next chapter. This is a fun experience and maybe a purchase but definitely a rental!!!!

This 1935 serial is a one of a kind and if you are a Gene Autry fan this could be for you. Enjoy.

The episodes are real good. Quality is good. I uses PowerDVD and can not create bookmarks. What's up with that?

Also there is no original theme music.

No complaints other than the above. Really should not complain at all I guess, only paid 5.50 for Episode 1 and 2.

      4 out of 5 stars 32 Earliest B&W Episodes 1962-64.......2003-08-03

This is a 4 DVD box set from Platinum Disc Corp. There are (8) 25 min. episodes per DVD, all are from 1962-1964, with one unexplained exception: Ep. 8 on Vol. 3 is from 1974. Go figure.

Digital quality: Very good (3.5/5). I have a 162" front projection system, so I can observe absolutely every minute detail of any DVD. Resolution is very good (4/5) with good detail. Brightness is a little low and contrast is also somewhat lacking. These can be compensated for by adjusting your TV or projector. Still, overall very good for 1962-63. I haven't viewed all episodes yet, but some of them are of substantially lesser quality (e.g., excessive brightness/contrast).

Two complaints to get out of the way: First, the episodes have an annoying "Platinum Disc Corporation" logo in the lower right during the entire episode. (A trick in my Sony player is if I use slow, step or fastfwd for even an instant, the logo does not reappear once normal play is resumed. Very cool.) Second, apparently they were unable to or didn't ($$$?) license Paul Henning's original theme music for the intro/conclusion ("Come and listen to a story about a man named Jed ..."). So the intro/exit of each episode has a so-so generic performance of similar 'picked' mountain music WITHOUT any words! That stinks, everybody loves the original theme, it kind of "gets you in the mood".

Very, very good episode 'liner' notes. Excellent job on those.

Here is the complete episode list (Vol#/Ep#):

      Product Description

The Clampetts, an Ozark hillbilly family, accidentally struck it rich when patriarch Jed, while hunting, shot the ground and struck oil. At the advice of their family and friends, they moved to Beverly Hills, California, where they moved into the mansion next door to banker Milburn Drysdale, president of the Commerce Bank of Beverly Hills. Accompanying Jed to Beverly Hills were his daughter, Elly May, a beautiful young "spinster" tomboy; Jethro, Jed's nephew and the brain of the family (with a 6th grade education); and Granny, Jed's mother-in-law, a mountain healer and matchmaker. Over the next nine years, several constants emerged...Jed never replaced his old worn hat or the family truck; Elly May never got a husband; Granny never got back to the hills; and Jethro never got to keep the girl. The Beverly Hillbillies were an instantaneous hit when it aired in 1962 and continued to be a hit until its last episode in 1971. During its first two seasons it ranked as the number one program on television, attracting as many as 60 million viewers per week!

I consider this product to be very good. You always get a good laugh when watching the Beverly Hillbillies! I would recommend its purchase as it is a classic.

3 out of 5 stars good episode selection.......2006-01-03

This budget DVD from Brentwood includes 10 classic episodes from THE BEVERLY HILLBILLIES, Paul Henning's sitcom about an Ozark family which hits oil and moves to California. Proud patriarch Jed Clampett (Buddy Ebsen), his daughter Elly Mae (Donna Douglas), cantankerous Granny (Irene Ryan) and slow-witted cousin Jethro (Max Baer Jr.) discover a whole new life, in the land of "swimming pools, movie stars". These episodes are Public Domain and sadly don't feature the memorable theme song (which is under copyright), however the episodes featured here are a delight. Including:

"Elly's Animals" - Jed and Granny decide to curtail Elly Mae's extensive collection of critters.

"Jed Plays Solomon" - Granny's plan to stop Cousin Pearl (Bea Benaderet) giving yodelling lessons backfires when the police uncover Granny's still.

"Duke Steals a Wife" - The Clampett's ornery old bloodhound Duke begins to court the fancy poodle of neighbour Mademoiselle Denise.

"Jed Buys the Freeway" - Jed is almost taken in by a shifty confidence trickster who compells him to buy the Hollywood Bowl, Griffith Park and the Freeway.

"Jed Becomes a Banker" - To compete in a skeet shoot competition, Jed becomes a banker.

"The Family Tree" - An historian traces Jed's family back further than the Mayflower settlers.

"Jed Pays His Income Tax" - The Clampetts get off on the wrong foot with the Government when Granny chases an IRS agent with her shotgun.

"The Clampetts Are Overdrawn" - Thanks to a case of mixed-up bank statements, Jed thinks he has lost all his money, and an unemployed actor called Jake Clampett gets an unexpected windfall.

"The Giant Jack Rabbit" - An escaped kangaroo settles in the Clampetts' backyard, which Granny mistakes for a jackrabbit. She decides to stew the animal up for supper...that is, if she can catch it!

"The Clampetts and Dodgers" - Jethro joins the baseball team when the coach becomes impressed with the boy's pitching arm.

      1 out of 5 stars Not what I thought..........2005-08-15

I read a previous review and thought this contained 10 new episodes. It was exactly the same as Volume 1, just in a different order. It doesn't say Volume 2 on the disc case and isn't the same picture as shown in Amazon. Maybe Volume 2 really is what I wanted. But what I received was definitely disappointing. I went to order it again, thinking I just ordered the wrong DVD, but it said I already purchased Volume 2. Maybe Best Buy has the whole set.
