Sweetness that doesn't turn saccharine is hard to find these days; Finding Neverland hits the mark. Much credit is due to the actors: Johnny Depp applies his genius for sly whimsy in his portrayal of playwright J. M. Barrie, who finds inspiration for his greatest creation from four lively boys, the sons of widow Sylvia Llewelyn Davies (Kate Winslet, who miraculously fuses romantic yearning with common sense). Though the friendship threatens his already dwindling marriage, Barrie spends endless hours with the boys, pretending to be pirates or Indians--and gradually the elements of Peter Pan take shape in his mind. The relationship between Barrie and the Llewelyn Davies family sparks both an imagined world and a quiet rebellion against the stuffy forces of respectability, given physical form by Barrie's resentful wife (Radha Mitchell, High Art) and Sylvia's mother (Julie Christie, McCabe and Mrs. Miller). This gentle silliness could have turned to treacle, but Depp and Winslet--along with newcomer Freddie Highmore as one of the boys--keep their feet on the earth while their eyes gaze into their dreams. Also featuring a comically crusty turn from Dustin Hoffman (who appeared in another Peter Pan-themed movie, Hook) as a long-suffering theater producer. --Bret Fetzer

Description

Award winners Johnny Depp (PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN: THE CURSE OF THE BLACK PEARL), Kate Winslet (ETERNAL SUNSHINE OF THE SPOTLESS MIND), Dustin Hoffman, and Julie Christie (TROY, HAMLET) star in this magical tale about one of the world's greatest storytellers and the people who inspired his masterwork "Peter Pan." Well-known playwright James M. Barrie (Depp) finds his career at a crossroads when his latest play flops and doubters question his future. Then by chance he meets a widow (Winslet) and her four adventurous boys. Together they form a friendship that ignites the imagination needed to produce Barrie's greatest work! An enchanting big-screen treat with an acclaimed cast of stars, FINDING NEVERLAND has been hailed as one of the year's best motion pictures!

5 out of 5 stars A wonderful movie for all ages........2007-09-04

I went to see this movie with my friends. I didn't even know what movie we would be seeing, I just went to be with them. At the end of the movie I was so moved, I could have cried. This movie is beautiful, powerful, and the acting is top notch.

Not only do Johnny Depp and Freddie Highmore give wonderful performances, but the supoirting cast of Kate Winslet, Julie Christie, Dustin Hoffman, and the other boys are just as magical. A brilliant film from start to finish and easily, one of the best of 2004. An absolutely wonderful move for all ages.

The DVD features A Filmmaker's Commentary, Deleted Scenes, Outtakes, and a few featurettes. I definitely recommend this movie. A delight for all ages.

5 out of 5 stars We are getting hooked on that Captain Johnny.......2007-09-03

Pirates are Johnny Depp's curse for ever and even when he becomes a Lord in late Victorian London he manages do choose the author of Peter Pan and thus gets some Captain Hook to shake his hand. But his role is a composition of the best and most difficult type, the type of stunts you don't need a stuntman to do in your place. The film is a real gem for two main reasons. First of all because it is a love story in a time when love was some kind of forbidden goods in the aristocracy. And the love story is so pure, so beyond any doubt that he avoids melodrama when death decides to play his own game with that Johnny who invades the widowed mother's life a little bit too much. Dramatic but not tear-wringing. And the second reason of the beauty of that film is also the reason why it remains feeling intense without being heart rending or heart breaking. The whole film is centered on a bunch of boys and brothers and Peter is so young that we are amazed by his being so present, so good, so mature in his performance. He does not miss a word, a sentiment or an emotion and his so deep acting touches us a lot more than the obstinacy of Death to come and take away what he considers his owed property. And all the rest is nothing but the clothing and beefing up of that power. Johnny Depp becomes a real prodigy in this composition and he looks so serious that we forget the genial clown he is quite often in other films. Peter Pan is a legend and his author is like the Peter of Heavens, the guide and majordomo of our imagination who can introduce us to what real spiritual happiness can be. And we discover we are still able to dream because somewhere the film wakes up the child or even the baby who has never died completely in our life of needs and wants and remembers the cradle that a motherly hand was rocking in a regular and powerful rolling that has inspired our most intimate desires as soon as we were big enough to sleep flat on our stomach in an adult bed. Regular and religious rhythm of that rocking. The religion of coming out of the dream to wake up in a sunny world of pure tenderness.

4 out of 5 stars Good!.......2007-07-31

This is a good movie. I can't help but to think there was an unspoken love between Barrie and Sylvia. They never said, but I think it was true, and in the end Barrie said he loved her. I think that is kind of an adult theme, Barrie was a married man who fell in love with another woman.

5 out of 5 stars Enchanting !.......2007-07-28

While many would pass this off as a "chick flick" they would be wrong, however if you "don't believe" even for a second...you will miss the magic!

5 out of 5 stars A great movie.......2007-06-28

This movie really touched my heart. It's based on the man who wrote Peter Pan, and in my opinion his story is more remarkable than the play he wrote. A man who struggled to write a hit play, struggled to find happiness within his marriage, and struggled to find himself. He finds a young boy named Peter who's mom is played be Kate Winslett. He becomes involved with this young boys family and his whole life changes. This is a touching story, and dare I say will bring a tear to your eye. My wife and I thouroughly enjoyed this movie. I hope you do as well.

Charming and frequently hilarious, IFC Films' Camp is like Fame for the musical-theater set. It's set at Camp Ovation, a summer retreat for budding actors and singers who chant Stephen Sondheim's "Losing My Mind" on their bus rather than "99 Bottles of Beer on the Wall." Into this environment comes a--gasp!--straight male, Vlad (Daniel Letterle), who turns upside down the lives of wallflower Ellen (Joanna Chilcoat), cross-dressing Michael (Robin DeJesus), and instructor Bert Hanley (Don Dixon), a frustrated one-hit-wonder composer. Camp was written and directed by Todd Graff, himself a Broadway veteran, based on his experiences at New York's musical camp Stagedoor Manor (which was attended by Natalie Portman and Robert Downey Jr., among others). The characters are a bit thin and the plot somewhat predictable, but the musical numbers are a lot of fun--older tunes are mixed with originals by Stephen Trask (Hedwig and the Angry Inch), Michael Gore (Fame), and Lynn Ahrens (Ragtime, Seussical the Musical)--and fans of musicals will love the many inside jokes, especially those relating to Sondheim. --David Horiuchi

Every summer, talented kids with big voices and even bigger dreams flock to Camp Ovation. 4 out of 5 stars OMG - Its Stephen Sondheim.......2007-05-24

Good film, definately what performance camps are like - thousands of gay boys and the girls who love them. And then, OMG - Its Stephen Sondheim! If you're into musical theatre AT ALL, check out this film.

5 out of 5 stars Camp the Movie.......2007-03-09

I love the movie, I always have. It's played so seldom on television, I almost forgot about it until I got a recommendation from Amazon - I had no idea Daniel Letterle was 23 at the time of filming. Great Buy, thanks!

5 out of 5 stars A MUST FOR EVERY THEATRE KID OUT THERE! THESPIANS MUST SEE THIS!.......2007-01-29

This movie touched me far more than FAME did when I was a teenager just aching to move from Muscle Shoals, Alabama to New York City to be the greatest Broadway Musical Director in the World. The screenwriters and composers have a grasp of teen angst that is remarkable, fresh, honest, sweet, heartbreaking and uplifting at the same time.
BUT WAIT, THERE'S MORE...I was blessed to accidently recieve tickets to the WORLD PREMIERE of this talented team's brand new AMAZING musical "THIRTEEN" in Los Angeles in December. What a stunning cast, great concept..in my opinion, a far more finished, tighter, thoroughly wonderful new concept for musical theatre for all ages. This one will be performed more than "High School Musical" when the word gets out. The dancing reminded me of the Disney knock-out, but the acting, and singing of these amazing kids just blew the too-perfect Disney production right out of the water. I'm watching for each of the kids to be superstars! Oh that my musical I am working on gets such a great treatment! And that I can work with kids, cast, crew so amazing. Watch CAMP, then FIND 13, and relive the best and worst of your youth. Should be required of all 12 year olds...AND THEIR PARENTS!!!

3 out of 5 stars YogaKids, Vol. 3: Silly to Calm .......2007-08-02

this video is ok... I have used it for ages 3 to 5 and have found children at these ages would either like more instruction on how to do the poses as well as learn more poses or would rather more capturing animation related to popular kids movie stories such as the Disney series...

3 out of 5 stars Not Perfect but Still Good.......2007-04-15

This teaches some good basic techniques and the kids seem to enjoy it. By the time they become bored it's just about time to go off. I do have to encourage them to stick with it. My main complaint is that there are a few long pauses with nothing to do while the video shows pictures of trees or other nature objects and the instuctor talks about the beauty of trees, etc. It frustrates me, I've never seen an adult yoga video with so much down time, so it doesn't make sense to have that much free time for 3-6 year olds either.

5 out of 5 stars Exceptional!!!.......2007-03-22

I am a Health and Physical Education teacher at an elementary school. During the state testing week I show this video to my Pre K-5th grades. At one point I had at least 43 first graders in the gym and had to keep them quiet. I was amazed at how well they payed attention to this video and how quiet it kept them. The last part of the video they were absoutely quiet and laying on their backs. I had one second grader fall asleep. She said, "I was so relaxed and comfortable on the mat. I didn't want to get up." Even my "cool" 5th graders were enjoying it. I had many students ask me, "Are we doing Yoga again today?!"

The beginning of the video gets all of their silly energy out and by the second half they are ready to relax.

This is my favorite video to show the students. I recommend it!

3 out of 5 stars OK.......2007-03-12

I like these videos in general but my daughter likes volumes 1 & 2 better than this one. I thought the monkey head lice segment was a little wierd.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent for getting moving with your kids.......2007-01-03

Maybe the poses aren't all legit, but they are fun. The instructor is not irritatingly peppy, she's calm and happy, and it's a great departure from many kids' videos. I bought this after checking it from the library, and have since bought Yoga 123 from the same instructor. Highly recommend for kids 2-5years, and probably for kids a little older, too.

The Broadway's Lost Treasures Collection consists of the three volumes previously released on DVD plus a never-before-available fourth disc, The Best of the Tony Awards: The Plays. The first three discs deliver what the title promises: historic performances of great moments in American musical theater televised on the Tony Awards starting in the 1960s and into the new millennium. Unlike some other arts, theater has rarely been well-documented, so it's a treat to see these numbers performed by the original artists rather than experience them through audio recordings or tepid movie adaptations. Sure, sound and picture quality are only adequate, some of the numbers are minimally staged and some appear to be lip-synched, and some of the performances that do have excellent film counterparts seem rather lackluster here. But those are minor drawbacks compared to the chance to see Gwen Verdon performing "All That Jazz" and "Nowadays" from Chicago and "Whatever Lola Wants" from Damn Yankees; John Raitt singing The Pajama Game's "Hey There"; Alfred Drake singing Kiss Me Kate's "Where Is the Life That Late I Led"); a 33-year-old Jerry Orbach performing Promises, Promises' "She Likes Basketball"; and 12-year-old Andrea McArdle breaking hearts in Annie's "Tomorrow."

The second and third volumes feature newer, fully staged performances that are almost indistinguishable from an actual show, including scenes from splashy, high-energy revivals such as Anything Goes (Patti LuPone and company performing the title tune) and Guys and Dolls (the fabulous "Sit Down You're Rockin' the Boat"), and new shows such as Grand Hotel (Michael Jeter and Brent Barrett in a gloriously exuberant "Take a Glass Together"), Les Miserables ("One Day More"), La Cage aux Folles (George Hearn solo and with a chorus line in drag in "I Am What I Am"), Ragtime (the opening number), and You're a Good Man, Charlie Brown (Kristin Chenoweth's "My New Philosophy"). The new generation of splashy dance-oriented musicals are also represented by the likes of the 42nd Street revival (the title tune and "We're in the Money"), Fosse ("Sing, Sing, Sing"), and Crazy for You ("I Can't Be Bothered Now").

The Best of the Tony Awards: The Plays features 19 of the dramatic and comedy excerpts showcased on the Tony Awards telecasts between 1969 and 2001. From 1969 are James Earl Jones and Jane Alexander in The Great White Hope and Art Carney in Lovers, and other performances include Maggie Smith and Margaret Tyzack in Lettice and Lovage (1990), John Lithgow and B.D. Wong in M. Butterfly (1988), Joan Allen and Peter Friedman in The Heidi Chronicles (1988), and Joe Mantegna and Ron Silver in Speed-the-Plow (1988). The performances aren't specifically organized by date or performer, but the collection concludes with four excerpts from August Wilson works followed by three Shakespearean works. The excerpts are brief, lasting 2-3 minutes each, and even though each segment is introduced by a narrator, this format clearly works better for musicals than it does for plays. Regardless, it remains a rare chance to see stage performances that for the most part are not available on home video. Collectors who already own the three musical volumes, however, will have to weigh how badly they want The Plays when they consider mostly duplicating their purchase with the Broadway's Lost Treasures Collection. --David Horiuchi

4 out of 5 stars Perfect for Musical Theatre fans.......2007-07-17

If you are a fan of Musical Theatre, this is a must-have DVD. The performances are absolute classics. My only disappointment was the video quality, but I guess most of these were not really filmed with that in mind. Several are segments taken from old TV variety shows. Still, it's a treat to see them.

5 out of 5 stars memories.......2007-07-07

I feel this is great memorabilia for the older crowd. There are facts that a lot of people did not know about some of the actors, like few people knew Jerry Orback was a song and dance man.

5 out of 5 stars Broadway Stars.......2007-03-20

Broadway stars abound in these DVDs. There is a wonderful variety of clips and the narrations and interviews are good, as well. Such talent! Gregory Hines, Robert Goulet, Richard Kiley, Julie Andrews, and more and more to knock you off your feet. Don't pass this up!

5 out of 5 stars Almost Perfect.......2007-02-27

I saw this on PBS and immediately decided to buy myself a copy!
While these excerpts are not from the broadway shows themselves, they are from the Tony Awards and are therefore, 'live.' And it's just wonderful to experience the level of 'energy' that great actors project when performing live on a stage.

There are a couple of songs that I don't particularly care for myself (Worst Pies in London), but most are wonderful, and the performances, while not 100% flawless (this WAS filmed live) are almost all engaging.

A few comments:
Yul Brenner manages to project more energy just standing there in the background than his co-star singing her heart out in "Shall We Dance." She is, alas, a fairly indifferent actress, and is overwhelmed by her enormous dress!

Lip-synced or no, Robert Preston in "Music Man" is wonderful. As is Joel Grey's fabulous MC in "Caberet." Again, it's all about energy.

I'd honestly never even heard of Patti Lapone before I saw this show, but she blew me away with her powerful voice. (Evita.)

"All that Jazz" and "Nowadays" from "Chicago" is, alas, much too short, but delightful.

The most unintentionally funny bit -- Twiggy looking either utterly bored or utterly terrified (but completely out of character, regardless) as she struggles with a simple dance routine in "Kicking the Clouds Away," (From "My One and Only.") She must have not realized that the camera had her in close up ...

5 out of 5 stars Packed with more quality learning than many other Spanish language kids programs!.......2007-09-10

I've been purchasing Spanish educational DVD's for my 3 year old since she was born. Most of them are extremely boring and repetitive. My daughter would watch but with little to no interaction. I recently brought home Whistlefritz: Vamos a Jugar and was astounded when she started answering questions and singing songs after the first viewing. This is a full immersion DVD and my daughter is not bilingual. Whistlefritz arranged the program in such a way that my daughter truly understands what they are saying. She has now been viewing this DVD on and off for about 3 weeks and is actually using the words throughout her day! I would highly recommend this DVD over titles such as Boca Beth, Brainy Baby or Plaza Sesamo. The Spanish to English translations used by Boca Beth only confused my daughter. Brainy Baby won't hold your child's interest much past 12 months and Plaza Sesamo uses far too many slang words and is not a good language learning tool. My only complaint with Whistlefritz is that the play time is too short. It is only about 23 minutes long and I felt that once my child was really getting in-to the program it ended. I think 30 to 40 minutes would be a better running time. Regardless, those 23 minutes are packed with more quality learning than many other programs that run much longer.

5 out of 5 stars Whistlefritz is a big hit. My 22-month old son LOVES it!.......2007-07-30

My wife and I were always impressed with how my cousin's children had excelled with picking up Spanish as a second language at such a young age. We were eager to get our son started but did not know where to begin. My cousin gave us copies of "Los Animales" and "Vamos a Jugar". He was immediately captivated. My wife and I were amazed at how quickly he seemed to be picking up Spanish while singing along and having fun. It even helped us to remember what we had learned years back in school. As soon as the DVD ends he claps, yells Yeah! and then asks for "Mo Whitlefrit".

5 out of 5 stars A Welcome Addition.......2007-07-29

"Vamos a Jugar" is an extremely welcome addition to the set of (suprisingly limited) tools available for parents who wish to teach their kids Spanish. While efforts by shows like "Dora" and "Dragon Tales" to include Spanish language content are positive, the occasional word or phrase does little beyond letting kids know that other languages exist. The immersion philosophy behind the Whistlefritz videos is a quantum leap forward. The genius is in the simplicity of the concept -- take characters, skits, games and songs largely familiar to kids and present them purely in Spanish rather than English, guessing (correctly) that kids will be able to follow the storylines and pick up the vocabulary quickly. Perhaps just as importantly, the entertainment, novelty and challenge levels are more than high enough to keep our 3 and 5 years olds fully engaged. "Los Animales" (the first video) has been part of the permanent rotation in our DVD player for months with no signs of displacement anytime soon; very happy to see a second video added to the mix and looking forward to more. Highly recommend this great new product.

5 out of 5 stars Even better than their other DVD, Los Animales!.......2007-07-16

Vamos a Jugar (Let's Play):Beginning Spanish for Kids is the second DVD in this series and I believe it is even better than the first one, Los Animales (Animals): Spanish for Beginners as there is more interaction with the kids. You really can't tell from the cover however it is all done with real people and not animation (and the kids are all cute and very entertaining). This DVD covers the parts of the body (head, face, hands, knees....) and they even do the song "Head, Shoulders, Knees and Toes" (in Spanish of course). It is a wonderful alternative to Dora, Diego or Dragon Tails. It comes with a guide to help with translations.

5 out of 5 stars Tyler Perry is the Ultimate Entertainer.......2007-05-22

I can't say enough to praise this man and his work. Tyler Perry's works are a necessary addition to everyone's collection, regardless of age, race, gender, religious practice, or sense of humor. You have to have this set and while you're at it, pick up everything Tyler Perry you can find.

4 out of 5 stars G'wone, Madea!.......2007-01-10

Frist, if you don't like ribald black comedy, this is not for you. If you don't like a lot of soulful singing about the Lawd, this is not for you. Out of the three plays, I enjoyed "Madea Goes to Jail" the best. What I found riveting and so, so true was her/his advice to the nephew about love and relationships. I think Tyler Perry is my soulmate because every word of advice he spoke, I have said, thought and lived by the very same...from the "letting it go to the leaves and seasons."

Now about the singing. It can get a little long and drawn out with the testifying and sanctifying, but I did enjoy the "back in the day" solos. One of the cast members will really shock you with his rendition of Frankie Beverly's "Before I Let You Go." And Cheryl "Pepsi" Riley does a great job doing one of Chaka Khan's tunes. Oh, and Tyler can do a lil sumpin, sumpin, too!

If you don't want to sit through the entire play, just fast forward to the "counseling" scene to hear some good, common-sense advice about love and relationships. You will learn something or you better ask somebody!

5 out of 5 stars GREAT PERFORMANCE.......2006-12-15

The plays are funny and make you think about your own life. Great story.
I watch them over and over. I have the DVD Collection. Tyler Perry is Brilliant.

4 out of 5 stars Worth watching at least once before jumping into wrong conclusions........2006-12-07

The Tyler Perry Collection: 3 Pack DVD Collection contains "Madea Goes to Jail" "Why did I get Married" and "Diary of a Mad Black Woman; The Play". I personally liked the Madea goes to jail and Why did I get married much because they both made me laugh a lot while spilling a little bit of reality here and there. Although all of Mr. Perry's plays contain some of the same scripts(if you've seen all of them like I have, you can pretty much recite some of the words with the actors because they seem to run the same way all the time) Also the basic idea is generally the same. Its usually a dysfunctional family (usually the women) trying to overcome their past hurt.

Before I go into the movie review I'd also like to comment that Tyler Perry's plays and movies are primarily for the laugh and if one gets a lesson or two out of them, then it's even better. I think Mr. Perry knows his audience and targets just that. Not to mention that up until a few years ago, Mr. Perry was himself homeless and struggling to get by, so most of his writings come from that experience. As much as one or two of the scenes in his play open some old wounds about slavery and the stigma, I still think they are not totally out of place. I also think that we need to start encouraging the black people who try to break through out there and give constructive reviews instead of being invective.

With that out of the way here we go as far as the plays are concerned. Madea goes to jail pretty much finds Madea in jail for being naughty while she has her nephew and his wife staying over at her place. A lot of things go awry when the nephews baby was rushed to the ER in need of a blood transfusion because of a bathtub incident. I suppose you're wondering where either of the parents were...Well find out in the play. While in jail, Madea made some friends too and all of these people get tied together somehow in the play.

As for Why did I get Married, the play is about some married and single friends who have a tradition of having an annual retreat to rejuvenate their relationships and themselves. Well it turns out that the year Mr. Perry wrote about a couple was having marriage problems and everyone (except the wife's friend) was trying help keep their marriage from falling apart while trying to be as objective as possible. Anyway, it's a good one and it made me laugh a lot.

Diary was my least favorite for a host of reasons. The picture quality wasn't that good, the story line wasn't as strong and neither was there much to laugh about. And I'm willing to credit this to the fact that it was Mr. Perry's first big project, but they've got better with time. So that said I think they're all worth watching at least once. Just remember they are more about the laughs than anything else (that's why I watch them). Plus it's a good way to support a rising black star painting the face of black comedy different. I'd watch Tyler Perry production any day rather than all the dirty talking comedy out there from people like Chapelle, Cedric, Chris Rock etc. I suppose these people already have a thing for selling dirty talk. Tyler Perry products are clean fun.

1 out of 5 stars Crude, sophomoric, tuneless, and unfunny--add "Jee-zus!" to trash, it's still trash.......2006-12-02

How has this man found an audience for this swill? I was subjected to two--two! of his hideous videos as a member of a captive audience (some boor decided to foist his idea of entertainment on everyone who purchased a ticket on the same long-distance bus tour he took). Black man in drag plays loud, intimidating, violent virago--it wasn't funny in 1906, and it isn't funny in 2006. I am baffled and angry that Tyler Perry has resurrected this ugly staple of an unmourned past. There was no plot. (In "Madea Goes to Jail," all pretense of a plot simply ceases somewhere in the midst of the interminable second hour.) The writing was worthy of a seventh-grader. The platitudes were non-stop--again, particularly in "Madea Goes to Jail." And the cues for the sad attempts at "songs" were so obvious that I almost wept, because I knew that another assault on my ears was coming. When are black people going to stop celebrating violence, particularly the violent punishment of children? When are black people going to stop gyrating in orgiastic delirium at the mere mention of "de Lawd"? And where did black writers/"composers" like Perry get the idea that if you scream it loud enough, you need neither poetry, beauty, harmony, nor symmetry? We don't need violent Aunt Jemimas in 2006, and, if you value your history, your intellect, and your hearing, you don't need "Madea."

3 out of 5 stars good score, great singers, so-so pit band.......2007-04-22

a concert presentation of the leonard bernstein/betty comden/adolph green musical adaptation of "my sister eileen" with audra mcdonald radiant as eileen and kim criswell terrific as my. written in a matter of a few weeks after the earlier score by leroy anderson had been scrapped, this is the least respected of bernsteins scores for broadway (well, we wont go into "1600 pennsylvania avenue" but ...). still, it is a knockout of its kind, and the cast here is quite good, tho as is usual in these circumstances the orchestra under simon rattle, while highly proficient, doesnt quite get "it". now if only someone would release on dvd the 1958 television production starring original leading lady rosalind russell ...

3 out of 5 stars Wonderful Performance for the So-so Musical... .......2005-11-23

I agree the performance was outstanding and all the performers did such a great job. The sound/video quality is exceptional. But... the problem is the Bernstein's score itself is not very good. I didn't like the musical very much: no depth and no good melodies... To me, the concert was all about superficial pleasure lacking the essence of true art. With the same effort and time and money, Simon Rattle and BPO could have done more meaningful concert for a better classical work. Life is too short for so-so music!

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Concert Presentation Of Wonderful Town.......2005-09-26

This concert version of the Betty Comden/Adolph Green/Leonard Bernstein 1953 Broadway hit demonstrates just how much skilled, experienced professionals can accomplish. The three turned out the score in four weeks. The production was a vehicle for Rosalind Russell's star return to Broadway after years in Hollywood...and Russell couldn't sing. They fashioned a series of raucous, tender, funny, romantic songs, with Russell's efforts tailored to her comedy skills and limited vocal ability. The show was a smash, and so is this concert performance conducted by Simon Rattle.

Kim Criswell sings Ruth Sherwood and Audra McDonald sings her younger sister, Eileen. The book is based on Ruth McKenney's best seller My Sister Eileen. Ruth wants to be a writer, Eileen wants to be an actress. They leave their home in Ohio and head for New York, where they wind up in a crummy Greenwich Village apartment. They meet an assortment of oddballs, have a series of adventures, and Ruth finds love and success. It's a funny, sweet story. Comden and Green fashioned lyrics that are satirical but good-natured. Bernstein rose to the task with songs that could be funny and tender, but also with set pieces designed to show off Russell. These pieces -- Conga!, One Hundred Easy Ways to Lose a Man, Swing! -- are complicated, often raucous and were deliberately designed to be show-stoppers for Russell. They're still show-stoppers with Criswell.

Comden and Green had a way of making fun of things that seldom left wounds. Listen to the lyrics of Pass That Football, What a Waste or Conga! and you'll most likely laugh at the wry recognition of your own pretensions. While I admire most of Bernstein's Broadway shows, my admiration is more intellectual than emotional. Still, you have only to listen to the romantic theme given to Terry and Edie in On the Waterfront or to Lonely Town or Some Other Time from On the Town to realize he was capable of writing music of great longing and sweetness. He hasn't hit that mark here, but he's done some clever, highly polished work, and he's also come up with a couple of poignant-happy melodies that are outstanding: It's Love and A Quiet Girl.

Kim Criswell is an experienced Broadway musical actress who can belt out a song with the best of them. Audra McDonald is just as good as the quieter sister, and her voice is magnificent. They make a great duo. Thomas Hampson plays Robert Baker, who eventually realizes he loves Ruth, not Eileen.

This was the 2002 Berlin Philharmonic's New Year's Eve concert and was filmed in the concert hall as a minimally staged production. In this case, it's the songs, the music and the singers that count, and they all come off magnificently. The DVD picture and audio presentation is excellent. Highly recommended if you like Comden and Green and Bernstein's Broadway shows.

Incidentally, Eileen McKenney married a young author, Nathanael West. He wrote Miss Lonleyhearts and The Day of the Locust. Both books are worth reading. They were young, talented, and were killed in a car crash on their way to Scott Fitzgerald's funeral. Her life made part of a warm, funny book, a play, a movie and then a musical, but didn't have a happy ending.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful Town: Wonderful Concert!.......2005-08-19

I was immediately taken with the overture. Considering it wasn't one I was familiar with, I was surprised at how much I enjoyed it. The enthusiasm of the musicians was amazing under the baton of Simon Rattle. The performers are flawless, as expected but the overall quality of the DVD is stunning in its clarity and most especially the sound. One of the absolute best quality DVD concerts I've ever encountered. This DVD is a definite winner!

5 out of 5 stars Magnificent.......2005-08-01

I purchased this DVD based on Scott Morrison's review - and am very happy I did. It's great fun - a pleasure for the eyes and ears.

David Talbert is a brilliant writer and director. I think he's a bit overshadowed by the Tyler Perry craze and dont get me wrong Tyler is the man but there are other writers and directors out here. In all David's play are wonderful and I can relate to many of the subject matters. I recommend this to anyone who's looking for Christian based entertainment.

If you are a fan of Tyler Perry you should really check out David Talbert. His works are well written and entertaining! This three pack is a great way to start your own collection.

5 out of 5 stars Worth Every Penny!.......2006-11-23

I love David Talbert's work. These plays are worth every penny! I originally rented He Say She Say ...., I loved it so much that I decided to buy the three pack. I have watched these movies soooooooo many times! They are great for family gatherings as well. Instead of watching movies that everyone has seen, I pull this out of the collection and we have a blast! For many of my relatives, this was there first time hearing about these plays.

Clifton Powell is a great actor. I almost fell out of my chair laughing when his character haid the nerve to say, "You see, that's the problem with you 100% black people. I'm 37% Cherokee."

These plays will make you laugh, cry, get angry-they will take you through some emotions and remind you of things that you have heard of or seen in your lifetime.

Kudos to Mr. Talbert on a job well done!

4 out of 5 stars great box set!.......2006-09-12

you i know that i love box sets and i love this childs play box set as well the only bad thing is that the 1st inst in it because its mgm,,but thats fine. these movie scared me when i was a boy but know watching it you can really find the dark humor in it. alot of people will dog this movie like Michael "Critical Writing" but what does he know, all the movies he likes all suck anyway,,because honestly how can a lord of the rings nerd talk trash about chucky.... but anyway this is a great buy if you like horror/dark comedies!

5 out of 5 stars A Horror Movie Icon..........2006-04-23

It's been hard to write a review for the Child Play movies since I haven't seen one in a long time. I rented them from Blockbusters and watched them. I thought they were extremely good, but I did think that the 3rd Child Play was sort of dumb. My favorite of this set has to be Bride of Chucky. I just found it hilarious.

4 out of 5 stars to answer the guy before me..........2006-03-20

ok to answer the guy below me who seems to think chucky is better than jason and michael myers..the reason people put chucky down he is to inconsistent in the value of the films..childs play ruled, childs play 2 was pretty good, and
then there isnt a good chucky until seed of chucky which is sub par... so to answer your question why do we put chucky down but hold jason and michael high...in short they kick ass chucky got soft..kk..im out buhbye

3 out of 5 stars You Can't Keep A Good Guy Down.......2006-03-16

First off I was a lil disappointed that the first one wasn't in the box.. But I picked it up brand new for $5 so it wasn't that big of a deal. Child's Play 2 was fairly decent. 3 However... Well let's not go there. I haven't sat thru that one since I saw it in theaters.. I'll give it another watch eventually. Bride of Chucky wasn't a great movie but it was fun. Chucky and his comments make the movie worth watching. Jennifer Tilly's not bad either ;)

I want to know why people really feel the need to bash Chucky? I think he's better to watch than Michael Myers (Halloween), Pin Head (Hellraiser) & Jason Vorhees (Friday the 13th)

Chucky = ratings.

5 out of 5 stars Don't .... with the Chuck.......2005-10-05

I love Chuckie! He's such a great character that I never get tired of watching! This is a great collection with 3 great movies. In order from the best to worst: Child's Play 2, Bride of Chuckie, Child's Play 3. If a movie had a horrible plot, if you put Chuckie in it, I would be willing to watch it... Chuckie just adds this sort of funny yet scary and evil combination that adds humor and greatness to any movie. Whatever you do, just don't .... with the Chuck!
