4 out of 5 stars No HD DVD version.......2007-08-23

If I were the same as all the Blu-Ray fanboys, I'd rate this movie 1 star and complain that it's not on HD DVD and say how Sony has Disney in their pocket etc and swear I'll never buy any version of this movie until it comes out on HD DVD and secretly go buy the standard def version and have it packaged in discreet brown packaging.

That being said, Dead Man's Chest was not as good as the Curse of the Black Pearl, and only slightly better than the 3rd movie.

5 out of 5 stars Disney delivers magic on Blu-ray.......2007-08-06

This movie was simply amazing in picture quality and sound. I had already owned Pirates of the Caribbean Dead Man's Chest on standard DVD. When I compared the standard DVD with the Blu-ray version the Blu-ray outperforms on all levels. The scenes in the movie where you see the islands and ships sailing the ocean were very beautiful. Dead Man's Chest on Blu-ray delivers such sharp crisp picture quality. The people, plants, grass, and trees looked so real it was like you could reach out and touch them. Simply put everything looks life like in this Blu-ray movie. Also when watching Blu-ray scenes Davy Jones and his crew look very real. Unlike the standard version DVD you can actually tell Davy Jones crew have facial features. The sound quality of this Blu-ray movie was also very great as well. For all you Blu-ray naysayers when I compared watching the standard DVD versus Blu-ray the standard dvd looked like a bootleg movie. Yeah I couldn't believe myself but there it was. I could not believe how much I was missing out from the Blu-ray movie. Oh did I mention that I received an amazing Blu-ray experience with a outdated setup. I used my 1080i HDTV ,component cables, and Playstaion 3. Imagine how much better this Dead Man's Chest Blu-ray movie would look on a 1080p hdmi setup with surround sound! Overall this Dead Man's Chest Blu-ray was amazing and is the best Blu-ray movie out right now. I finally want to say that Disney you truly delivered a magical masterpiece on Blu-ray. Great job Disney keep delivering the Blu-ray magic : ) :) :)

5 out of 5 stars Solid movie with brilliant picture and crisp sound make this a must-buy for Blu-Ray owners!.......2007-08-04

If you own a Blu-Ray player, this is a must-buy movie! If you're just a fan of great movies overall, this is a must-buy movie! Johnny Depp delivers in this non-stop action/adventure film, with loads of laughs as well. You all should know what this flick is about, so I will not go into details on that. If you are thinking of getting this movie on Blu-Ray but you already own it on SD-DVD, then that choice is up to you. The picture is pristine on BD-DVD, and the audio quality is very clean and crisp.

I own a very cheap HDTV and sound system that I purchaed for my 15-month tour here in Iraq and am blown away by the quality and differance compared to the standard-def version of this movie. Simply put, if you own this movie already, it is entirely up to you if you wish to purchase and view it in high-def. But for those of you who do not own any version of this flick then the decision should be a no-brainer-buy this now!

Disney did a flawless job with this one, loaded with extras and bonus material galore. I'm not really big on the extras and junk, but all Blu-Ray releases should be as jam packed as this one. Way to go Disney and I look forward to future releases from you guys in the future!

5 out of 5 stars Wow, amazing picture!!.......2007-08-04

I did a comparison with my 720p HDTV with this in my PS3 and my original DVD in my DVD player, and the picture quality is amazing in this Blu-Ray release. I would find a screen with a lot of detail and pause it and flip back and forth, and I can see details on Blu-Ray of things that I just couldn't make out on the DVD release. Add that to the fact that the Pirates series is, to date, one of the biggest and best trilogies since 2000, makes this Blu-Ray release a must have for any owner of a Blu-Ray player. I am really glad that I repurchased this in HD format. Thanks for picking my format side Disney!

5 out of 5 stars Great Quality.......2007-07-25

Much in the same way movies like Top Gun were "show off" movies for the DVD format this movie really shows the quality in Blu-Ray.

The difference is very apparant in darker scenes where on a DVD the picture might not show everything as well as it does on the BD.

Plus the extra disc includes very interesting stuff. The little thing that shows Captain Jack and explains every detail that went into making the costume really shows off what some of the people in the credits go through to make Jack look the way he does. And shows how much of a primadonna Johnny Depp is!

Product Description

Take the first Pirates of the Caribbean film, add a dash of 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea and a lot more rum. Shake well and you'll have something resembling Dead Man's Chest, a bombastic sequel that's enjoyable as long as you don't think too hard about it. The film opens with the interrupted wedding of Will Turner (Orlando Bloom) and Elizabeth Swann (Keira Knightley), both of whom are arrested for aiding in the escape of Captain Jack Sparrow (Johnny Depp) in the first film. Their freedom can only be obtained by getting Captain Jack's compass, which is linked to a key that's linked to a chest belonging to Davy Jones, an undead pirate with a tentacle face and in possession of a lot of people's souls. If you're already confused, don't worry--plot is definitely not the strong suit of the franchise, as the film excels during its stunt pieces, which are impressively extravagant (in particular a three-way swordfight atop a mill wheel). It may help to know that Dead Man's Chest was filmed simultaneously with some of Pirates 3, so don't expect a complete resolution (think more The Empire Strikes Back) or the movie will feel a lot longer than it really is.

Bloom shows a tad bit more brawn this time around, but he's still every bit as pretty as the tomboyish Knightley. (Seriously, sometimes you think they could swap roles.) Bill Nighy (Love, Actually) weighs in as Davy Jones and Stellan Skarsgård appears as Will's undead father. But the film still belongs wholly to Depp, who in a reprise of his Oscar-nominated role gets all the belly laughs with a single widened eyeliner-ed gaze. He still runs like a cartoon hen and slurs like Keith Richards--and he's still one of the most fascinating movie characters in recent history. --Ellen A. Kim

3 out of 5 stars JOHNNY DEPP! yep........2007-09-15

Johnny looks so good in this movie, however I don't get why he talks like he is drunk. But hes a good pirate. very different to other pirate movies though, with the introduction of the "dead/gohst" pirates. Not suitable for children. Good movie

5 out of 5 stars A great sequel.......2007-09-04

This is one of those rare sequels which surpasses the original in quality. It reminded me of Godfather 2 in this respect. It also features some of the best CGI I have ever seen; Davy Jones is so realistic-looking that I thought he was an animatronic mask rather than computer graphics.

2 out of 5 stars Depp cashes it in.......2007-09-04

I really enjoyed Johnny Depp's mid-1990s work, particularly "Ed Wood," "Dead Man" and "Donnie Brasco." Much has been made of his "Keith Richards meets Pepe Le Peu"-inspired riff in the "Pirates of the Caribbean" films, but the truth is that Depp is clearly slumming here (perhaps deservedly so after two decades of assiduously avoiding the big payday-style blockbuster).

A lot of other good talent is going to waste at the service of these amusement-park ride driven plots, particularly Oscar-winner Geoffrey Rush, Orlando Bloom, and Keira Knightley (who, if she loses more weight, runs the risk of being mistaken for one of the skeletons on Rush's ghost ship). Bill Nighy, one of the cinema's (and theatre's) finest actors, is hidden behind a squid-like mask.

Intermittently entertaining but ultimately unsatisfying.

4 out of 5 stars Aye Aye Cap'n Jack.......2007-09-03

Good movie, but let's face it, even if it sucked, I would love it because Johnny and Orlando make some YUMMY PIRATES!!!!!!!

Of the three, my least favorite - action scenes were a bit long for my taste - but still loved it - especially the character of Captain Jack Sparrow!

This disappointment from Jim Jarmusch stars Johnny Depp in a mystery-Western about a 19th-century accountant named William Blake, who spends nearly all his money getting to a hellish mud town in the old West and ends up penniless and doomstruck in the wilderness. A benevolent if goofy Native American (Gary Farmer) takes an interest in guiding Blake on a quest for identity in his earthly journey, but the film is really just a string of endless shtick about inbred woodsmen, dumb lawmen, and a trio of irritable killers. With Robert Mitchum, Iggy Pop, Gabriel Byrne, Alfred Molina, and a noodling soundtrack by Neil Young. --Tom Keogh

Description

Johnny Depp (CHOCOLAT) delivers a remarkable performance in this highly acclaimed tale of adventure and intrigue in the wild, wild west! A young man in search of a fresh start, William Blake (Depp) embarks on an exciting journey to a new town ... never realizing the danger that lies ahead. But when a heated love triangle ends in double murder, Blake finds himself a wanted man, running scared -- until a mysterious loner teaches him to face the dangers that follow a "dead man." With an outstanding supporting cast including Gabriel Byrne (THE USUAL SUSPECTS) and Robert Mitchum (CAPE FEAR), and a sizzling soundtrack, DEAD MAN is another motion picture triumph from filmmaker Jim Jarmusch.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars indeed, apparently the Amazon reviewer was on crack.......2007-08-20

One of the best films of all time. A departure from Jarmusch's other films into a more somewhat spiritual phase that included later Ghost Dog. I never tire of watching this gorgeous, funny, sad, existential and moving film. It is one of the few DVDs I deem worth owning. Do not miss it.

5 out of 5 stars Artistic and Odd.......2007-08-16

I read a lot of the reviews before watching this movie. I am a Depp fan, so I decided to see for myself what it's all about.

It's artsy, and you have to get used to the format. The black and white cinematography, I thought, was very good. The format is more of a series of vignettes than a continuous flow of story and dialogue. You get the hang of it pretty quickly. The music isn't your normal kind of score. Sometimes it fits the scene really well, and other times it borders on being annoying. The acting is very good. Don't expect some sort of "Ocean's Thirteen" cast with witticisms and glitzy movie-making. It's not that kind of film. If you're familiar with much of Depp's work you won't be too surprised that this film is avante garde.

In terms of the story, I'd recommend relaxing and taking the journey. Each person will find something different in it, I think. The story isn't hard to follow. The choices that Depp's character makes result in the twists and turns of the story. Don't waste time trying to figure out logic - you'll figure out pretty quickly that logic isn't part of the random sorts of things that happen. Why does Depp's character do what he does? He just does. Could he do otherwise? Yes. But he doesn't. He seems swept away by his circumstances - that's part of the interest of the story. Obviously Native American spiritualism guides Farmer's character. If you have any understanding of Native American myth you'll be able to figure Farmer's character, "Nobody," out. As to whether he's "real" or imaginary, that's part of the individual interpretation involved in watching the film. That's part of what makes it artsy instead of "hollywood." Everything isn't spelled out and spoonfed to the viewer.

If you want to walk away with a resolved ending and a happy feeling don't waste your time. Likewise if you're sensitive to things that are dark and logic that is more random than systematic, you won't like this film. In my opinion those who are very critical of this movie either try too hard to find the "meaning," or are frustrated by the dark mood and random manner of the events because they're trying to order things and find the natural flow. There isn't a natural flow here. If you're able not to take things too seriously and you're interested in something that will make you think a little bit, wonder a little bit, and philosophize a little bit you'll like this movie. Likewise students of film will appreciate the format and other aspects of the non-traditional way this film is constructed.

5 out of 5 stars Well worth the 2 hour playing time.......2007-08-11

I am not a huge fan of westerns, but I gave this one a shot and I wasn't disappointed. The first 10 minutes sets the scene as Johnny Depp, playing a staid accountant from Cleveland, Ohio, William Blake, makes his perilous way by train to the Old West. His situation in the hellish town of Machine becomes dire rapidly, and his urbane sensibilities become hardened with the issues of mortality, violence, escape, and mysticism, with the aid of an Indian friend, Nobody, who thinks he's the real poet William Blake. It's a Western road movie, filmed in glorious black and white and scored musically by Neil Young. Seems many folks here didn't care for Neil's guitar-based soundtrack; I thought it mesmerized. Jim Jarmusch's Dead Man is an atmospheric, almost spooky Western that doesn't fail to entertain.

5 out of 5 stars Totally Awesome!.......2007-06-19

If you are a real free thinker than this movie is for you. If you need to have everything scripted and compartmentalized than this movie is not for you. The story line and soundtrack are a perfect marriage. Watch this movie when you are not distracted and can concentrate on the subtle dialogue ... Some pretty cool stuff here. Great characters. This film plays itself out like a hazy dream. Not everybody's cup of team, but it sure is mine. I can't think of another film that approaches this dream state.

4 out of 5 stars Dead Man.......2007-06-11

Johnny Depp. I have never been disappointed by Johnny Depp on the screen. Not an action packed thriller, but if you don't "PAUSE" before leaving the room and don't rewind you'll miss something.

Bolstered by the success of 28 Days Later, Shaun of the Dead, the Resident Evil movies and the hit remake of his own Dawn of the Dead, George A. Romero returns to the horror subgenre he invented with Land of the Dead. The fourth installment in Romero's zombie cycle (and the first since 1985's Day of the Dead) presents a logical progression of events since 1968's horror classic Night of the Living Dead: Zombies (also known as "stenches" for their rotting odor) are the dominant population, and they've begun to show signs of undead intelligence and gathering power. The wealthiest survivors live comfortably in a luxury high-rise within a barricaded safe zone, ignoring the horrors of the outside world while armed scavengers stage raids in the zombie-zone to gather much-needed food and supplies. Simon Baker and John Leguizamo play mercenaries-for-hire; Dennis Hopper is their nefarious boss; and horror favorite Asia Argento (daughter of Suspiria director Dario Argento) plays a former hooker recruited into Baker's scavenger squad. While none of this seems particularly fresh or inspired, Land of the Dead benefits from hints of the social satire that made Romero's earlier zombie films so memorable. Not so much funny as gruesomely peculiar, Romero's plot isn't as inventive as it could've been, but as a big-scale B-movie, Land of the Dead delivers a handful of shocks and horror-celebrity cameos (including gore-masters Tom Savini and Greg Nicotero) that should keep horror buffs happy until the next zombie opus comes along. --Jeff Shannon

Customer Reviews:

2 out of 5 stars What plot?.......2007-08-14

Land of the Dead has to be the worst out of all of Romero's "Dead" films. There is no plot hardly at all, and a lot of plot holes at that. Why are the zombies after Dennis Hopper? How do they know who he is? Those are just a couple of question out of the movie that are left unanswered. The only reason to watch the movie is to see zombies eat and destroy, but how many movies have we seen that are like that? This movie offers nothing new and is the same old thing that has been done a million times. We have even seen a zombie figure out how to use weapons on Day of the Dead, so zombies using weapons on here was nothing new either. Good special effects and a cameo by Tom Savini are the only thing that this movie worth watching. Everything else is very forgettable and not really worth watching again

3 out of 5 stars Please note this is full screen, *not* widescreen.......2007-08-13

I assumed this DVD was widescreen, but when it arrived it said full screen on the case. Please take note of the aspect ratio before you order this disc!

2 out of 5 stars Stupid plot..........2007-08-03

I will give this movie 2 stars solely based on the cool graphics. I was really hoping that this movie would be as fun as other zombie movies that I love like 28 days later, Resident Evil, and of course the previous "dead" movies. I'm sorry to say that it did not measure to any of the aforementioned flicks. If you are the type that gets entertained solely with visual effects, then you might enjoy this movie as it has alot of gore and realistic sequences. However, the conversations between the characters are completely idiotic and unrealistic, and the plot really leads you nowhere. I was quite dissapointed with this movie, and if I had the chance to do it again I would definitley not purchase it again.

3 out of 5 stars Okay, but not as exciting as Dawn of the Dead.......2007-07-27

First, let me get out of this out of the way. If you've seen Dawn of the Dead (the newer version with Ving Rhames in it) and you're expecting Land of the Dead to be just as good, you're going to be disappointed. This film isn't nearly as action packed or as crazy fun as Dawn was.

That's not to say it's a bad film. The plot is decent, although not without a few "why the hell?" sorts of questions, and John Lequizamos' acting is spot on I think for this kind of film. Th problem I think is that given the plot and the whole world the characters are living in, there aren't many action scenes & when you do get one, it still isn't as thrilling as Dawn because the Zombies here are a lot slower. Instead of running towards someone to kill and eat, they shuffle, or at best walk at a fast pace.

So just to sum it up since I don't like long reviews, this movie is worth a rental. I'm not a big George Romero follower, so I wasn't expecting too much. If you are a George fan, you'll probably see this movie anyway, but like I said, give it a rental.

5 out of 5 stars Horrific Zombies!.......2007-07-22

While this is somewhat of a departure from other zombie flicks, it has lots of gore, guns, and action.

Few movies, documentary or otherwise, capture the relaxed exuberance of Dave Chappelle's Block Party. This is Chappelle's first project since his show on Comedy Central received so much popular and critical attention that he apparently had a psychological meltdown and fled to Africa to escape. You can still see a hint of weariness and wariness in his eyes--but even more you can see his relief to be launching a project that bears no expectations. Funded by his own money and free to all who attended, Chappelle set up a secret concert location in Brooklyn and pulled together a musical lineup of stellar acts, including Erykah Badu, Kanye West, Mos Def, Jill Scott, Common, the Roots, Dead Prez, and the reunion of the Fugees, all of whom give vibrant performances. But Block Party doesn't just capture the show; at least a third of the movie is Chappelle wandering around Brooklyn or the Ohio neighborhood where he lives and interacting with the people he meets, many of whom he gives free tickets for the show. These scenes, combined with footage of the performers rehearsing or just gassing around before the show, offer a sense that for Chappelle performing is just an extension of his everyday life; that he takes just as much pleasure from goofing around with one person as he does goofing around in front of hundreds or thousands. Putting together this event becomes a unique self-portrait as well as an experience that rejuvenated Chappelle. If you surrender to the vitality of the show and Chappelle's loose comic jazz, you may find it rejuvenating too. --Bret Fetzer

3 out of 5 stars To see another facet of Dave Chappelle.......2007-08-19

This is not necessarily 'funny' but through all of Dave Chappelle's funniness, I have come to know and admire the man. This gives much insight into how he views the world and how he operates in the world. He is a hero to me, mostly because he has remained true to himself. He has not sold out, nor does it look like he ever could. Yay Dave!

Other people assessed this accurately too--it would have been nice to have the special features with full, unedited versions of each performer.

4 out of 5 stars the feel-good film of 2005.......2007-07-12

Dave has done it again. I may be biased because I'm a fan of Chappelle, all of the artists who performed, and the director, Michel Gondry, but I know a good documentary when I see one. Don't go into this thinking that it will be Rick James' E! True Hollywood Story because you'll be sorely disappointed. Go into this with an open mind and heart. Chappelle takes the viewer on a journey to New York for the block party of the summer. Visiting rural areas and surprising random people, young and old, with tickets to join him and some of the greatest names in hip-hop. It's a softer side of Chappelle that we see, and you'll love him even more after watching this. Great performances by: The Fugees, Talib Kweli, Erykah Badu, The Roots, Kanye, and more. My only complaint is that the bonus features aren't that great, I wish they would have included the entire concert. Nothing but love and great music in this film.

3 out of 5 stars Nice not amazing.......2007-05-12

Its more a concert than a comedy video, I was specting more time on air by Chapelle, but the invited singuers are great one. Gotta love soul.....

4 out of 5 stars party to go.......2007-05-07

Dave's Video is really a party & a cool look a the whole production thing

4 out of 5 stars The Chappelle you wernt expecting.......2007-04-26

I really enjoyed seeing a different side to Dave. I agree with most reviewers that this movie is not really funny by any means, but it gave me a new light to the comedian. There is a serious and very respectable side to Mr. Chappelle and i feel he is the next big comedian to hit our generation. I never knew Chappelles understanding and respect for jazz music and his dedication to learning Round Midnight by the great Monk. He brings up almost "almost" a philosophical way of looking at how comedians and musicians intertwine. I enjoyed it, the replay value isn't there though. There was not enough footage of the music performances. It could have been set up into 2 parts i felt, The Concert, and than his little documentary, but it wasnt set up like that. Overall i gained some respect for Dave after seeing this

5 out of 5 stars A very enjoyable zombie flick.......2007-06-30

As zombie flicks go this one was, in my personal opinion, very thought out and executed. Okay, so you can't really grab someone by the hair and rip their head off along with their spinal chord, but that's what the fiction genre is all about.

If there's going to be a sequel somewhere down the road, I hope it's not by some fly by night 'B' company who just slaps any old thing together.

5 stars for great affects, acting, and all around entertainment.

1 out of 5 stars stupid.......2007-01-20

This movie is so stupid. Ok... Zombies are already dead and that means their brains are not much use for being smart. But for some reason the zombies are trying to be smart. So freakin' stupid.

5 out of 5 stars Darn good zombie flick... with a message!?.......2007-01-05

Land of the Dead is the spiritual successor of Romero's previous Zombie films, ending with Day of the Dead too many years ago.

When I learned they would be using computer generated imagery for some of the special effects, I sort of cringed. Computer created blood and gore effects I've seen in other releases have left me with a bad taste in my mouth. I can happily report that with a few exceptions the CG created imagery works really well. The only scene I can think of as being slightly disappointing is the scene involving the zombie in the liquor store. I don't want to spoil the surprise for anyone, but I'll leave it at there is a scene that involves some bloody spray that just looked unnatural to me. All of the other effects, such as zombie heads being removed from their bodies and so on looked about as realistic as normal effects. In fact I'd say the scenes that involved disembodied parts worked better this way given that the body parts were real; helped by the creative use of blue/green screen effects.

As with Romero's previous zombie works, this movie can be enjoyed for the gorey simplicity it contains or for those looking for something with a deeper meaning, something that requires some thought, you can glean deeper meanings on many of the things presented here as well. Romero says it best when he calls Dennis Hopper's character the zombie infested world's equivalent of Donald Rumsfeld.

So if you're looking for a film with a creepy atmosphere and plenty of gore, or are looking for an action oriented film with a message, Land of the Dead is worthy of a viewing.

Being given the HD version, as well as the SD version on a single disc is certainly a bonus over purchasing the DVD only version, despite the price difference. I don't have an HD-DVD player yet so my views concentrate on the SD version which looks good (but certainly no replacement for HD) for an SD release.

4 out of 5 stars A fitting sequal for the Dead series.......2007-01-04

Land of the Dead is a very good sequal to the original Dead trilogy. In HD it looks really good plus you get the film in regular definition on the other side which is a very cool thing. The extras are the same as the DVD version and none of them are in HD which is a bummer but 90% of the HD discs out there are like that.

4 out of 5 stars George A. Romero proves that zombies still creep us out.......2006-08-07

We should have known that if George A. Romero was going to go back to the well of the living dead another time he was going to come up with something different. What "George A. Romero's Land of the Dead" (the director's name goes up top so you know this is not merely another remake of one of his zombie films, like last year's "Dawn of the Dead") offers is two variations on the familiar theme. The first is in this brave new world humanity has found a way of perpetuating the old divide between the "haves" and "haves not," even when there are all those zombies out there suggest it should now be "us" versus "them." Kaufman (Dennis Hopper) has set up Fiddler's Green, a luxury high rise on an island between a couple of rivers (think the location of Three River Stadium in Romero's old stomping ground of Pittsburgh even though the movie is shot in Toronto). There the "haves" live while the rest of the island has the "have nots," some of whom are hired as mercenaries to go out into the world and bring back "necessities." Apparently money still matters in the "Land of the Dead," or perhaps people are merely trying to hold on to the old way of life, because the poor are not listening to those advocating going and taking away from the rich.

Consequently, humanity has found a way to survive. You can compare the more active approach of "Land of the Dead" with the mall rats of "Dawn of the Dead," who found a passive means of existence. Kaufman has built Dead Reckoning, a gigantic armored vehicle that leads foraging parties out into the world. These parties are led by Riley (Simon Baker), whose primary goal is getting everybody back alive, which does not always happen. That is because he works with Cholo (John Leguizamo), who has a different idea of necessities, one attuned to the fine tastes of Kaufman. Both men believe they are on their last mission at the start of this 2005 film, Riley because he will have now earned enough to pay for a car to get out of town and Cholo because he believes he has now earned the chance to move on up to Fiddler's Green. Both are wrong and that sets up the conflict to come.

This is where the second variation comes into play. Kaufman not only created a high rise where the "haves" are protected from that "have nots," some of whom actually help the "haves" have even more, but the entire island is zombie proof. This forces Romero to change the zombie part of the equation, and so we are introduced to Big Daddy (Eugene Clark), who runs a gas station and has a moment akin to when the ape looks at the thigh bone in "2001: A Space Odyssey." Just to help us along the voice over at the start of the film warn us that if the zombies ever develop anything approaching rudimentary thinking skills that would be a bad thing, a very bad thing indeed. So, of course, that is what happens. After all, if you can have bad humans, then you can have good zombies (Joss Whedon has convinced me being dead does not make a character inherently bad).

Having a zombie to root for is quite a different experience, but Romero also delivers on the guts and gore when the zombies go into their patented feeding frenzy. The narrative can offer all the sly social satire it wants, we watch these movies to be disgusted by the bloody scenes of cannibalism. The people Romero hires to do makeup and special effects are clearly on the cutting edge when it comes to this type of work. Even when you watch the DVD special features and you see what they are doing in bright light most of it will still creep you out, so the scenes in the film shot at night or in the shadows with the liberal application of blood and other things it is even worse (which is a good thing in a zombie movie).

The bottom line is that Romero delivers just what his fans want with this movie so that there is not a problem with failing to meet expectations. No, "Land of the Dead" is not the best of the bunch, but for my money nothing will surpass the original "Night of the Living Dead." The important thing is that here we are four films into the series, limiting ourselves to just the Romero helmed ones, and the series is certainly going a lot strong than the other comparable horror series, all of which have been abandoned by their creators (which is either a cause or effect). Final Note: Look for Simon Pegg and Edgar Wright of "Shaun of the Dead" fame as the photo booth zombies in one of the classic cameos of the early 21st century.

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Good campy horror........2007-08-31

This is good campy horror. I would not rank this as a great horror film. It has good action. The plot is engaging. Basically a psychologist goes into Freddy's mind at the end of the movie and brings him out into reality and then they blow him up with dynamite. I found it more entertaining than the 4th NOES. Alice Cooper makes a cameo as Freddy's abusive dad. Also Rosanne Arnold comes out as a carny.

5 out of 5 stars The Best of the Sequels!..........2007-07-24

next to ANOES 4: The Dream Master. Yes, I said it.
Does anyone understand that the film is supposed to be tongue-in-cheek, and do you really think an unplanned sequel can be scary or good. What NOES did with its sequels was smart. Once something is watered down, the only way to save it is to unabashedly lampoon the hell out of it. The series became an exploration of sheer curiousity, as sequels should.
Just look at the later Hellraiser sequels. They try to hard to stay scary... it's over. Once you put a cenobite in the series with CDs in its head, there's no turning back. There's no wonder why they went straight to video. NOES knew what it was and what it became. Freddy's Dead is the ultimate "F* you!" to pretentious sequel makers. Have fun and take the stick out of your ass. Do you really think a movie titled "Freddy's Dead" will be a masterpiece?

2 out of 5 stars Not as good as cold be.......2007-04-11

The way they portrayed Freddy with his mask was just no good. At the time it came out there should have been better effects and costumes though out the movie, overall disappointing but you should still see it if you are a die hard Elm Street fan.

5 out of 5 stars It takes a woman to go farther than a father.......2007-02-15

It takes a woman to bring about this sixth episode. Rachel Talalay revives Freddy and gives him a new dimension. First he is revived through a boy and we may think we are back to the second episode. Wrong. We all start this sixth stage in our trip in a plane and then the nightmare comes. The boy finds himself in a teenage shelter, in other words a prison for teenagers because Freddy's target is the female psychiatrist. They all believe the boy is Freddy's son. Wrong again. The boy is only the caretaker of one mission : bring the female psychiatrist to Springwood which is only two miles away. There Freddy will get three more victims, all boys. He definitely is a male-child molester more than a female-child abuser. But this time, with the help of another psychiatrist, male and black, the woman is going to get into Freddy's head, which is possible because she is his daughter and she has plenty of common recollections with him. She gets him out of the dreamscape in which he is protected and overpowerful and gets him into the real world where he is mortal. The final fight will lead to his absolute annihilation with his own claws and a good old stick of dynamite, his own penetrating and raping tools turned back onto him with the penis-like dynamite stick as a cherry to top it of, and he finally loses his cherry. The film though is more interesting than just that. First it is modern, it has grown up along with the world and we have electronic games, colour TV, consoles of all types, hearing aids and many other modern gadgets. Second it has also followed the growth of teenagers as an age group and the teenagers in the film are from our modern time : they are definitely rebellious, have been marginalized by drugs and many other things, including the abuse from their parents, and are now controled by the police and other judicial institutions for delinquent teenagers. They are at least neurotic and can become psychotic in a minute, in the wink of a dream, when the real world becomes virtual, dreamlike, or even inexistant. But the film enables us to discover Freddy in his real life. He was married and had a daughter and yet at the same time had been the victim of adults and had developed a complete tolerance to any suffering. And here Rachel Talalay plays with us and introduces a blue-beard recollection in Freddy's daughter's discovering her father's torture chamber. Finally the technique used in the film has been updated to all kinds of modern special effects. This sixth episode though wants to be the end of the saga in its title and in its closing scene and song, though the last picture is still one of Freddy himself standing upright on his feet. It is well known that the strongest nightmares are forever and ever and ever again.

4 out of 5 stars a bit of a let down.......2007-02-04

i heard through the grapevine that this was a 3-D movie, which intrigued me. upon purchasing this DVD, i found that this is not the 3-D version. the SFX in this movie bite, but only because they were meant to be in three dimensions.

it is a bit of a lame focal point, but the 3-d glasses play a part in the movie (don't worry, i won't spoil how!) but it would have been better to have both the 3-d and regular versions in this DVD. I then discovered that the Freddy box set has the original 3-d version with special edition glasses, which pissed me off no short of pissing, right after i completed my own 'nightmare' collection... oh well...

at least i got the special edition of the first 'nightmare'

4 out of 5 stars Billy Halop leads the pack with little tough guys........2004-02-20

It began with DEAD END (1937), The boys came from the Broadway play and landed their first starring role togther. After Dead End (1937), First National Pictures picked them up for CRIME SCHOOL (1938) and they made many more films for over 20 years until 1958. In 1938, Billy Halop brought along Huntz Hall, Gabriel Dell and Bernard Punsly in Little Tough Guy (1938). This spun off into another film series with a total of nine films for Universal from 1938-1943. They also made film serials for the new Universal: JUNIOR G-MEN (1940), SEA RAIDERS (1941) and JUNIOR G-MEN of the AIR (1942). In 1940, Leo Gorcey and Bobby Jordan bacame The East Side Kids for Monogram Pictures Corp. for 22 films from 1940-1945. Huntz Hall and Gabriel Dell would later join the new gang. Then in 1946, The East Side Kids bacame The Bowery Boys and made 48 more films from 1946-1958. Now back to Billy Halop and Bernard Punsly. They continued with The Dead End Kids with The Little Tough Guys film series until they both said goodbye in MUG TOWN (1943). Billy Halop continued a film and television career, but getting parts was hard. In between acting jobs, Halop was a chef, electric dryer saleman and in his final years was a male nurse. He played "Bert Munson" in he CBS tv series, "All in the Family" in 1972 and aired through 1977. In 1976, Billy Halop had a heart attack and passed away ending a 50-year career in show biz that started with radio in the 1920's. Bernard Punsly last film ever was MUG TOWN (1943). He became a gynocologist M.D. in Torrence ,California and recently passed away on January 20, 2004 as the last surviving Dead End Kid. Huntz Hall died January 30, 1999. Marjorie Main who was in DEAD END (1937) plays a role as Halop's mother in this film. She went on to do THE EGG AND I (1947) as "Ma Kettle" (which spawned into a new film series "Ma & Pa Kettle"). This film, Little Tough Guy is also David Gorcey's (Leo's younger brother) film debut.
