Sex and Lucia engages mind and body with its time-bending narrative and images of beautiful Spaniards having vibrant sex. The story shifts between past and present, fact and fiction, so a plot summary won't capture it, but… A young writer named Lorenzo falls into a passionate relationship with a waitress named Lucía. But he also finds himself drawn to a young nanny taking care of a child who just might be the result of an anonymous fling Lorenzo had with a woman he met on an island the year before. Lorenzo fantasizes about the lives of all of these women until a horrific event sends him into a suicidal depression. This may sound obscure or flat, but Sex and Lucía unfolds clearly and beautifully, featuring stunning visual images of both nature and flesh, and weaving a poetic spell much like the director's previous film, The Lovers of the Arctic Circle. --Bret Fetzer

5 out of 5 stars the complications of a novel put into film- brilliantly done.......2007-09-06

most people watch this movie for the amazing intimate scenes, but the kicker is really the mind-bending way it tells the very human and emotionally charged story- complicated and artistic plot twists acted out on film rarely accomplished by any but hitchcock or krzysztof kieslowski, from a passionate female latin viewpoint. amazing. gorgeous. watch it completely alone or with someone who won't mind pausing for you to express your love for the film...

4 out of 5 stars Okay.......2007-05-13

It definately kept your interest. Mainly because it was hard to follow and the story is so strange that you just had to see what was happening next.

4 out of 5 stars Eroticatic-.......2007-01-10

A very romanic and very erotic movie. Paz Vega is one of the most beauitful actress to come along in years, and has moved into the mainstream of movie making. The story is a wondrous love story. I would recommend it for adults.

5 out of 5 stars What is all about beyond intimacy?.......2006-07-19

This dramatic movie exposes many sex activities. Beyond all that, what is the message to send for the viewer? "Do you want to have wild sex with strangers?" Or "do you want to have intimacy sex with your lover?" With all the sex enjoyment, love and "blood" relationship is the final count after all. This is the destiny but not up to our choice. This is why Lorenzo falls into suicidal depression. This is why Lorenzo bursts into sorry tears to Comandrona. This is why Lucia rejects Tony's sex even there is a strong indication of sex enjoyment. Are these sex activities necessary? Let's look at it in different way. Can the movie have same visionary and emotional impacts without sex scenes? The answer is clear. Overall I enjoy this move very much, even have a shock for many days.

2 out of 5 stars Not what I expected.......2006-07-05

In a word this movie was disappointing. It's supposed to be about beautiful Spaniards having sex on a magnificent Mediterranean island. Well there wasn't that much sex and the photography was nothing special. Add that to a plodding pace and poor plot and you don't get a very good film

Joe Versus the Volcano is a true early-1990s cult film. This fantasy-comedy was the first pairing of Meg Ryan and Tom Hanks, yet it polarizes viewers like a Blue Velvet or Happiness. As the only directorial effort from John Patrick Shanley (the Oscar-winning writer of Moonstruck), it is something special, and it's hard to resist the film's feather-light heart tugging. Joe Banks is having the life sucked out of him at a dead-end job. Miserable in his gray surroundings with stark fluorescent lighting, Joe dreams of being brave again. A visit to the doctor reveals that he has a "brain cloud." It's fatal, but he'll be fine for a few more months. An eccentric millionaire, Samuel Harvey Graynamore (Lloyd Bridges), hears of Joe's predicament and comes to him with a proposal: The people of the Pacific island of Waponi Woo need a human sacrifice to appease their gods. Why not live like a king for a few weeks, then throw yourself into a volcano? (Graynamore needs a sacrificial victim to offer in exchange for permission to mine the island for a rare mineral.) Joe accepts Graynamore's lavish proposal and on his journey meets three romantic possibilities (all played by Ryan). Joe embraces life; so does the movie. It's packed with smile-inducing supporting performances by Bridges, Ossie Davis, Robert Stack, and Dan Hedaya; playful songs ("Sixteen Tons," "Ol' Man River," Presley's version of "Blue Moon"); and amusing scenes (such as Joe buying luggage). Add the daring, imaginative production design of Bo Welch (Edward Scissorhands), Hanks and Ryan's chemistry, and Georges Delerue's romantic music and you have a film to fall for. --Doug Thomas

Description

Laughs erupt when Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan fall in love and fall in lava in Joe Versus the Volcano, a colorful, stylish laughquake written and directed by Moonstruck Oscar winner John Patrick Shanley. And Meg Ryan follows up her starmaking When Harry Met Sally...with three roles, playing each of the women in Joe's life. When we first meet Joe, he has the white-color blues. Every day is Monday, the boss is always in a bad mood and the cumulative stresses convince Joe he has a terminal condition called a "brain cloud." So when a zany jillionaire pops up and offers him a fleeting taste of the good life, Joe leaps at the chance. All he must do in return is leap into a volcano. But funny things happen on the way from the urban isle of Manhattan to the remote tropical isle of Waponi Woo... Out of the corporate frying pan. Into the fire. Is Joes doomed to be the last of the red-hot lovers? Not if the forces of courage, love and comedy have their way.

5 out of 5 stars One of my favorite movies of all time.......2007-08-29

This is quite simply one of my favorite movies of all time. I have no explanation as to why, it just is.

5 out of 5 stars the best of Tom and Meg!.......2007-05-27

oh. how I love this film! Joe is told by his doctor (a quack I might add) that he has a rare disease that will kill him in 6 months. so he decides (via being bribed) to go toss himself into a volcano in exchange for a vacation, and loads of fun. but what he didn't expect to find along the way was Love! and Meg ryan is Ultra Cute in this film and tom hanks is Hilarious and as always very comical in his acting (I laugh every time i watch him being diagnosed with his "New Disease" and then quitting his job! what hilarity buy this film you will not regret it! great for family friends and anyone else! its also cool seeing meg ryan as a redhead blonde and brunette! this movie is a classic like Big!

5 out of 5 stars My favorite movie.......2007-04-07

This movie has become my favorite movie of all time. I have given it a rating of E, which is the highest that I will give to a movie or book. To receive this rating, there has to be substance, meaning, consistency of story and plot, depth, and it must be unforgettable.

I highly recommend this movie to anyone who wants not just entertainment, but a challenge to find the messages this movie is saying to each viewer. There is a connectivity throughout the movie that makes it well worth viewing several times to pick out. I will not go into details, for that would make it too easy and spoil the fun to be had in searching. They are there, words, moments of insight, pictures, and ideas. They are there, find them, and enjoy.

I think the choice of Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan was the best choice for this movie. Both do very creditable acting. There is also a lot of frisson between these two characters which adds immeasurably to this movie.

One of the things that you will find in this movie is what simple love is and how important it is. By simple love I mean the power of the touch of hands, the giving of oneself to keep another safe and well, the look within the eyes that says "I care for you". These are all simple things, but powerful too. Hence, their meaning comes across powerfully within the framework of this movie.

I have seen this movie several times and I am still seeing things that connect throughout the movie. This makes it more fun to watch time and again, because you always will find something new missed before. Spielberg is an excellent director and he knows how to tell a story. The story presented in Joe vs the Volcano is done extremely well in this movie. There is much more to it within the movie than just the interplay of the two main characters. In addition, the music adds a depth to this, a surprising depth. I have tried to find the sound track and it is not available. Only 3500 CD's were made and these are gone to those who likewise found it to be something worth keeping.

There are unforgettable scenes throughout the movie too. One in particular I always see in my mind and thoughts. Tom Hanks (Joe)and Meg Ryan are on a raft after the sail boat that Meg was captain of sunk in a storm. Meg suffered a blow to the head and is unconscious so Joe gives her water to keep her well, denying any for himself because he does not know when they will be rescued. About the third night he sees the moon rise. At one point he struggles to stand and it then appears he is holding the moon up with his hands. It is touching, an unforgettable scene. Joe then says:
"Lord, who's name I do not know,
I Thank you for my life.
I forgot... just how big...
Thank you for my life."

My recommendation is to not miss this movie. It is worth the price, and then some, I believe sincerely. You will not forget it, you will find the movie refreshing everytime you see it. And you will find a smile or two on your face, and maybe a tear or two as you understand all the things this movis is saying to you.

Joe

Teenagers fervently worshiping pop music stars is relatively commonplace across America, but Jenny's (Amanda Bynes) obsession with pop star Jason Masters (Chris Carmack) gets out of control when the two find themselves washed ashore on a deserted beach following a stormy accident at sea. Jenny quickly discovers that what she and Jason think is a deserted island is really a quiet beach not far away from the fancy beach resort where they've both been staying. Cherishing some quality time alone with her idol, Jenny begins an elaborate charade to keep Jason believing that they're stranded on a desert island and poses as an accomplished outdoorswoman and provider in hopes that he'll fall madly in love with her. Longtime friend Ryan (Jonathan Bennett) discovers the ruse and reluctantly agrees to help Jenny, but when rival Alexis (Jamie-Lynn DiScala) follows Ryan and discovers Jenny's secret, she's determined to get equal time with Jason and steal him away from Jenny. In the end, Jenny and Ryan discover the difference between true love and starry-eyed infatuation and Jason and Alexis get just what they deserve. A light romantic comedy, Love Wrecked is amusing, if fairly forgettable. Rated PG for sensuality, crude humor, and language. --Tami Horiuchi

Description

(Family/Comedy) On a Caribbean cruise, Jenny (Bynes) is marooned on a beach with her rock and roll idol. Deliriously in love with the idea of time alone with him, she manages to hide the fact that they're a stone's throw away from their resort.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars FUNNY!.......2007-08-28

Well, I must say Amanda Bynes makes me laugh... A LOT! Ok, so this is not the most interesting movie ever, but it's pretty well done and really enjoyable. If you had watched -and liked- She's The Man and What a Girl Wants, you MUST watch this one. Funny!

2 out of 5 stars Teen Flick - Great Resort.......2007-07-27

I bought the movie primarily to see the Sun Village Resort in Cofrezi, DR, where the film was shot. We're planning a vacation there and wanted to see some of the area "live" and there are lots of scenes showing the resort facilities. The movie, itself, would probably only be of interest to teens and Amanda Bynes fans.

2 out of 5 stars Good idea, poor script (don't read if you haven't seen the movie!).......2007-07-18

I watched this one cause of Amanda Bynes. She was so funny in 'She's The Man' and hell, she's even alright in this, but of course her personality isn't quite as defined.

The scenery is really beautiful and some will find the actors and actresses beautiful, but the storyline just rolls and rolls until it crashes into a pile of cliched flames.

Let me tell you something for a fact: Just because the person you like doesn't want to be with you, DOES NOT mean that you'll instantly fall in love with your best friend whose been pining over you for ages because he's 'always there' for you and is a good catch. Chemistry and love is so much more complicated than that. Why do they always use these stupid storylines? This could have been a good movie. Not great, but good. Everything is fine until near the end and it's all ruined with a dumb fairytale that's highly unrealistic and ruins the whole movie.
It's just not a very funny movie, either. Not a lot of comedy, but maybe that's just me...
There is a 'just friends' rule for friendship for a reason - no chemistry. "Kissing him would be like kissing my brother!", then suddenly oh my god she LOVES him! My God. No. Watch this movie for everything else but the ending.

2 out of 5 stars Amanda Only.......2007-07-09

You gotta really love AB,
Which I do... But even for me, It was hard to watch,
Lousy story = lousy movie.
Makes me want to watch "SHE'S THE MAN" for the 37th time.

5 out of 5 stars Showcased the locale beautifully.......2007-04-05

I have visited the Sun Village Resort in Puerta Plata, Dominican Republic where this movie was filmed twice. It was the reason I purchased the DVD. It was a fun movie for teens, pre-teens and anyone who's visited the resort. I was pleasantly surprised!!

The cinematography by Néstor Almendros garnered him an Oscar nomination. Unfortunately, the performance by then child star Brooke Shields garnered her a nomination, too--for a Razzie Award. She won, he didn't.

This 1980 remake of a much classier, 1949 British version features Shields and Christopher Atkins as children shipwrecked on a lush tropical island. They grow to maturity and fall in love, with the script paying special attention to their burgeoning sexuality. Should you desire more trite dialogue, there is an even less satisfying sequel, 1991's Return to the Blue Lagoon. --Rochelle O'Gorman

5 out of 5 stars Brooke...........2007-08-24

One of my cheesy favorites. This is a great movie to rent with your girlfriend/boyfriend on a rainy day. Nice little story, cute and funny subject matter, and pretty faces as stars. Brooke is absolutely gorgeous in this film. She actually gives a good performance as a stranded teen on an island growing up with her childhood friend. The story focuses on their maturing emotionally and physically, and eventually their love for each other. Definitely a must see. Classic 80's!

3 out of 5 stars Skinny dipping in Fiji must be so much fun.......2007-07-25

I was only 5 when this movie came out, and had no idea of the controversy it created until seeing it as an adult. The controversy it created was enough to generate box office returns and made this into one of the most well known modern classics. And yet, for me, it left many things to be desired.

Brooke Sheilds and Christopher Atkins play Richard and Em, two kids who are the only survivors of a ship wreck on a desert island. They not only manage to survive and create essentials for survival (food, shelter, etc.), but have language skills and no apparent problems. Being isolated and knowing nothing of the outside world, they will, naturally, go through puberty and somehow fall in love without really know what's going on. They also have a baby, completely neive what to do with it and how to care for it, but, somehow, as primative people do, survive.

There is much implied that isn't said in this movie. Richard and Em just might be cousins. They are practically naked throughout the entire movie, and made a million people cry "kiddie porn" (although he did use a body double for some of the more reveiling scenes showing Brooke's 14 year old breasts). The special features are good, where Brooke and Chris recall each and every scene with all the amusing anecdotes that an experience like this would entail. It was mostly about the lush setting, making Fiji probably the most romantic honeymoon spot for years to come. It's hard to argue with a beautiful island place like Fiji.

Still, this is a movie about happiness, innocence, and getting back to nature. That's what we all want, living in paradise and free of the evils of the world. Enjoy it for all its innocent passions it envokes.

4 out of 5 stars Blue Lagoon is not blue........2007-04-20

Blue Lagoon is not a blue (raunchy, erotic, etc.) movie at all. It is an interesting examination of the scenario it presents. I have never understood why the critics all rate it so poorly. And I don't even understand why almost everyone scorns the dialogue, and the acting. It all seemed reasonable and realistic enough to me, given the ages of the protagonists (not the actors). What's the matter with the carpers? This is a fine and beautiful movie, much better than lots that are rated higher.

5 out of 5 stars just the way i remembered.......2007-02-21

i hadn't seen this movie in years. still love it

3 out of 5 stars Age of innocence and embarrassment.......2006-09-16

**Possible spoilers** In this infamous movie, Richard and Emmeline land as children on a remote island with the gruff but loveable Paddy. Not long after Paddy shows them the basics of survival, Paddy dies and the two youngsters are left all alone and forced to fend for themselves. Nature takes its course and it isn't long before the teenaged Emmeline becomes pregnant. What are the fates if these three? It would be all too easy to conclude this is a tale of morality, funded by a religious conservative group and filmed to warn kids and their parents about the dangers of sex before marriage, the price of ignorance and the importance of parental involvement in a child's life. A pregnant teen with no job, no health insurance and an unemployed husband, forced to live off the charity of others. Get thee to a nunnery. Yet I am going to go against the grain on this one and say that I don't think that was the purpose behind this film. If the goal was to serve as a warning, then why is there a happy ending even though there is no repentance? Certainly they must be made to pay for their sins?! This blatant effrontery and refutation of providence very obviously signifies an exercise of free will and desire for base pleasures. These children experience puberty in a very innocent and natural manner, without all the social stigmas and peer pressures that normally accompany this period of life. In this way, the film resembles a documentation of human development and a social study. Plot aside, the acting is not especially good, though it would be difficult for most of us to deliver some of these lines with a straight face. Not a bad film, just not all that great either.

This mega-budget action epic flopped at the box office with a resounding thud, and it probably deserved that fate for not living up to its lavish potential. But Cutthroat Island has had a healthy shelf life on video, and digital video disc can only improve the film's potential as a spectacular guilty pleasure. Geena Davis plays Morgan, the swashbuckling daughter of an aging buccaneer who inherits one-third of a map to a secret pirate treasure. But the map is in Latin, and she needs a lowdown thief and scoundrel (and presumably a Latin scholar), played by Matthew Modine, to translate the map when they obtain the other two pieces. That's when the mayhem begins and the dashing duo race for the treasure against Morgan's scheming uncle (Frank Langella) and a hoard of greedy pirates. With wall-to-wall action ably handled by Davis's then-husband Renny Harlin, Cutthroat Island is more fun than its box-office performance would indicate. --Jeff Shannon

3 out of 5 stars Good purchase.......2007-01-05

The movie itself was for someone else. It was delivered fast and had 2 versions on it. Normal and Wide screen which is what I wanted. I recommend buying from Amazon.

3 out of 5 stars Wonderfully Cheesey.......2007-01-03

If you're looking for a serious pirate movie stop now. If you're like so many pirate movie fans and have come to realize that there is no such thing dig in and enjoy. These movie is wonderfully cheesy and yes overacted at points. But its a great beer and pizza movie. Something that can be watched several times and enjoyed.

A thoroughly entertaining fun action pirate movie with a great female lead. Why wasn't it more well known?

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Period-Style Actioneer With Lavish Sets, Dashing Swordfights And A Devil Of A Soundtrack. Great Fun........2006-08-05

This 1995 16th century period-style pirate actioneer is a lot of fun. Geena Davis ("The Long Kiss Goodnight," "Stuart Little") is perfect as the dashing, and hunted, female pirate Morgan Adams. She pulled the role off very well, with all the spunk and fire neccessary for her character. Makes me want her as a companion. Matthew Modine ("Full Metal Jacket") fares equally well as her companion William Shaw. Frank Langella (1978's "Dracula") is terrifically venomous as her evil pirate uncle Dawg. Shame that it didn't do well at the box-office, considering the budget (over $60 million). A sequel (which the ending promised) should have been made. Renny Harlin ("Die Hard 2," "Cliffhanger," "The Long Kiss Goodnight") fares a lot better with this film than he did with "Die Hard 2." Morgan's scenes with Bowen should have been expanded. It was clear that she loved him as her own son, though her exciting life wouldn't have permitted her the luxury of children. It would have been nice to see more of the two of them together. Consistent with the period-style setting, there is no sexuality or nudity (an "R" rating would have been needed for that; I'm no prude, but unless the storyline calls for it, nudity isn't neccessary in a movie; "Bram Stoker's Dracula" and the equally well-made [but, like this film, maligned by stupid critics] "Mary Shelley's Frankenstein" being cases in point where nudity was needed; please see my reviews on both films). Rated PG for action-violence.

This 1961 family film, based on the novel by Marguerite Henry, inspired a generation of children to name their pet dogs, cats, turtles, and so on after the lovely colt of the title. Set on Virginia's coastal island of Chincoteague, the film begins on "Pony-Penning Day," an annual celebration that involves rounding up for auction wild ponies on neighboring islands. Two young children, a brother and sister (David Ladd, son of Alan, and Pam Smith), capture an elusive mare nicknamed Phantom and hope to take ownership of her colt, Misty. A stranger has other plans, however, setting his mind on buying both animals, and the disappointed kids turn to their sympathetic townspeople to find a way out of the dilemma. A great-looking film shot on location, Misty is an effusive adventure about that special, even mythic, bond between children and wild creatures. Performances are strong, the scenery is splendid, and the film lingers in the memory for a long, long time. --Tom Keogh

Customer Reviews:

2 out of 5 stars Disappointing.......2006-10-23

I read the book to my two children, age 11 yo son and 5 yo daughter. My son was excited to get the movie. However, when we watched it, my son was disappointed. He noted the drastic change in story line, the poor quality of the lighting/screen colors, and the poor acting. My son is an actor himself, but had never made such comments before and this was the first movie he had ever walked out on. On the other hand, my daughter loved it. I did not like the change in the storyline making the grandparents seem much stricter.

3 out of 5 stars Fairly Good Adaptation of the Novel.......2006-10-16

I am at a loss whether to give this book a 3 or a 4 and finally ended up marking it at the lower score; major points are taken for not releasing this film in widescreen since the exteriors were filmed on location on the island where the real story took place and we never get the full import of the beautiful Atlantic seashore shots. Also, the print seems a bit faded and dusty. I agree that Pam Smith's Maureen was a little more fun to watch due to her spunkiness; on the other hand, I hated the whole business that had the children earning money and everyone thinking they were poor, which was not in the book. I also think they should have had the Phantom race as she did in the book. However, I did like the cast, although Arthur O'Connell seemed a bit off; I think he could have done a good Grandpa Beebe had the character been written more like he was in the book.

3 out of 5 stars The film is ok but misses some points from the book.......2005-02-19

The film is ok, but like many childern film adaptations, misses some key points in the book and just doesn't give me the same feel as the book does. For example, the Phantom actually does run in the official race before Paul and Maureen release her back to the wild. So, I was a bit dissapointed in the film. As to the horses not having the EXACT same markings as the ones in the book as another reviewer complained... That I can overlook as the horses they used were close enough and to match horse markings, especially pinto colors that's close to impossible.

4 out of 5 stars Very good family entertainment.......2005-02-07

I received this dvd as a gift, and found it to be very nice entertainment, but probably even more so for children. I found it to be a bit predictable, but again, it is probably more geared for children. All in all, it is the wonderful tale of two children working with ponies and learning some valuable lessons. There is a little humor sprinkled throughout to make it even more fun. Perfect for the horse-loving youngster!

3 out of 5 stars Argghh.......2005-01-11

Partially similar to the fabulous book, Misty of Chincoteague is about a horse known as " the Phantom " being brought into the hands of two kids, Maureen and Paul, after working hard for four months. Did they find out just when Paul went on the Pony Penning that there was not just The Phantom, but Phantom had a foal as well: Misty. they bought both of them after a small bit of trouble.

Even if the movie is old, i think it could've been made much better. the Phantom didn't even have her unique map of the united states on her withers, nor did misty. when they were swimming them across the lake, Phantom made no attempts of escaping .. and misty didn't look like she was drowning at all .. she was just swimming. the pied piper didn't come for the phantom, Paul and maureen just released her ..

the Clarence didn't even act like the grandpa in the book, he was more strict and less loving. Yet, there wasn't even a small storm where Phantom and misty were put in the trailor .. It could've had a lot more to do with the book ..

I suggest reading the book first, or just even reading the book .. too bad i bought the DVD instead of renting it first.

Almost 50 years before "Jurassic Park..." an amateur photographer, his fiancee and their companions take a perilous journey to a place where dinosaurs, giant sloths and other prehistoric creatures thrive. Filmed in vibrant Cinecolor at a time when many movies were confined to black and white and featuring eye-popping special effects, "Unknown Island," directed by Jack Bernhard, offers a thrilling look at modern man's confrontation with the primordial past.

1 out of 5 stars Bad Movie, and I do mean bad...........2007-08-12

This was the worst B-Dinosaur movie ever made. They were all men in cheap rubber suits. There was no decent acting and not even one line of intelligent dialoge. Nothing at all.

3 out of 5 stars A little gem from the past.......2007-07-04

They sure dont make movies like this anymore,, and if they did, it would be
pretty hard to secure a budget... Im glad that they did make these movies, as
they were our source of entertainment. I would rather see cheap monster
movies than gangster or war movies that were all the rage in the 60's.
There were much better creature movies out there, but only this one had
those weird dinosaurs. I just got the DvD version, and again am i pleased
with the quality, the color, the music. Its pretty bare bone dvd, without
any bonus stuff....

3 out of 5 stars Great nostalgia...........2007-06-02

"Unknown Island"....Not as awesome or frightening as when I first saw it as an 8-year old in 1948 at the Centro Theatre on 77th and Central in South Central Los Angeles....but well worth the few bucks I paid for this treasure of memories.

4 out of 5 stars cheesy but fun........2007-01-01

This is your typical dinosaur movie. A lost island that time has stood still and prehistoric (most of the time dinosaurs) animals still roam this world. Several people get eaten by the dinosaurs. It's sort of predictable. The animals look very fake but it's still a good movie. There are four animals in the movie. A brontosaurus, dimetrodons, giant sloths (they look more like giant apes), and many t.rexes. I especally like the t.rexes. They look more like ceratosaurus than a t.rex but who cares! Overall it's a good movie to see. It's apporpreate enough for childern. No bad words but some violence. The violence isn't too intense but it's mild. By this movie with Lost Continent (the one with Cesar Romero). It makes a great double feature!

3 out of 5 stars It's different..........2006-12-30

This is very different from what I've seen in other movies, mainly because it was made a long time ago.

I'm definitely not an expert on special effects, but, I've heard that these ones were worse than average even for their time.

But what the heck, the dinosaurs may be men in suits, but at least those suits are better than the extreme crap that is the Jurassic Park CGI dinosaur effects.

The characters are somewhat interesting, but none of them would get on my list of best movie characters.

I had something else to say about this movie, but I've completely forgotten what it was...

Although it begins with the police report of his death in a 1956 car accident, this BBC effort quickly backtracks to the birth of Jackson Pollock's fame seven years earlier with the memorable Life magazine question: "Is he the greatest living painter in the United States?" While the answer is still hotly debated, the fact that he became the most famous painter of that time is not. This 46-minute documentary concentrates on the intense glare of celebrity and its effect on Pollock's work and life. Because he allowed documentary makers unprecedented access to his process, this film is loaded with images of Pollock at work on his physically active--and therefore dramatically engaging--style of drip painting. His own voiceovers as well as those of his wife and champion, fellow painter Lee Krasner, are intercut with more recent interviews with poets, friends, biographers, and his lover, Ruth Kligman, who survived the deadly crash. Joining his old acquaintances is Ed Harris, director and star of the 1999 film Pollock, who speaks to the paralyzing combination of self-doubt and alcoholism that proved this artist's undoing. --Kimberly Heinrichs

Description

In the late forties Life magazine featured a shy, brooding artist with a cigarette jutting from his mouth as he stood dwarfed by a canvas displaying a nearly indescribable orchestration of chaos. Overnight, millions of Americans received this image in their homes and businesses, and the legend of Jackson Pollock was born. Soon his controversial work and defiant attitude made him at once the star and the scourge of the art world. In the end, his tragic death at the top of his career, cemented his image forever as the James Dean of artists. This documentary traces the life and work of Jackson Pollock through revealing interviews and archival footage. Among the voices that relate the legacy are Lee Krasner, Pollock's wife and fellow artist, and Ed Harris (director and star of the film Pollock).

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars DESPERATE SANITY?.......2002-02-16

Since documentaries are featured as extras on many DVDs, there's a growing appetite for this cinematic art form. Criterion is feeding that craving with a series of fascinating glimpses into extraordinary real lives.

The artistically apposite worlds of Jackson Pollock, and Robert Crumb are revealed in "JACKSON POLLOCK: LOVE AND DEATH ON LONG ISLAND" and "THE CONFESSIONS OF ROBERT CRUMB". Striking views of Pollock's work are commented on by artists including his wife, painter Lee Krasner. Ed Harris, the star and director of the Academy Award© winning film "Pollock" discusses Pollock's blazing rise to fame and his difficulties coping with it.

Somehow a sad look at the destructive, hyper life of what may have been a madman. Is being an artist be difinition a kind of insanity?

5 out of 5 stars Finally a Pollock movie that keeps us awake!.......2000-10-13

WOW! Though this is not actually the movie Pollock, and actually a 40 minute biography/precursor to the movie, it was wonderful! It had several interviews with freinds, fellow artists and other misc. aquaintences of Jackson's in it from Ruth Klingman to Kirk Varnedoe. They were short to the point and all very interesting, especially the Cedar Bar bar tender stories! In addition it had footage from the famous Hans Namuth movies of him at work and when he painted on glass while the camera was underneath(very hard to find footage!) This is a must to any Pollock freak. Caution there is some language unsuitable for classroom usage. Well worth the money if you like JP.

5 out of 5 stars Joan is caught between the bed and the Bible.......2007-09-01

"Rain" is the story of Sadie Thompson (Joan) who is staying on the island of Pago Pago after she left her home in San Francisco. Sadie is sexy, provocative, outspoken, and very friendly with the male G. I.'s who are also on the island with her.

Sadie's ways really tick off Alfred Davidson (played by Walter Houston). Mr. Davidson is a judgmental, prudish missionary that will not rest until he gets Sadie deported. At first, Sadie has no intention of leaving and becomes incredibly indignant. Sadie says, "you take care of your evil, and I'll take care of mine..." -- words to live by.

But, when she realizes that her deportation would be imminent she becomes very freighted and pleads with Alfred Davidson to allow her to stay.

He doesn't relent, but Sadie changes her ways, nevertheless. She is no longer the flashy dresser or "plaything" for the men on the island and has accepted her deportation (and subsequent prison sentence in San Francisco.)

On the eve of her return there is a climactic outcome and Sadie hightails it to Sydney; back to her old tricks!

Joan Crawford was absolutely devastatingly beautiful in this picture, and her acting was firstrate. The fear in Sadie was so believable; and the anger that Sadie had towards the hypocrisy of the missionaries was purely evident. This is without a doubt Joan's best picture of the 30's.

Poor Joan was crucified for this film (and for many since) when it was first released in 1932. Joan even publicly apologized to her beloved fans (who meant the world to her), because for the first time in her career they turned their back on her! No one wanted to see Joan Crawford play a wanton women of loose morals. They didn't realize that Joan Crawford was born to play the part of Sadie Thompson.

This is one of my favorite Joan Crawford pictures, because her true acting abilities really shine. She also plays a very different character; since she was on loan from MGM she was no longer tied to the sweet love-triangles that they gave her during her heyday in the 30's. This film does remind me of another Joan classic, "Laughing Sinners."

You will be mesmerized once you listen to the constant sounds of the Rain!

1 out of 5 stars Bandido?.......2007-09-04

I was looking for a Mitchum movie called Bandido, which I recall seeing in my youth in the 50's. For some reason, Fire Down Below came up on the amazon search of bandido. It didn't look like the right one, but for 5$, I gave it a shot. What a stinker! The only interesting things were: nice color, alot of big stars (future and past). I now recall someone like Gilbert Roland was in Bandido, with alot of shoot-em-up, appropriate for my 10 years of age sensibility.

3 out of 5 stars Entertaining studio fare.......2007-06-17

Nothing to do with Steven Seagal, 1957's Fire Down Below can be seen either as a typical Hollywood romantic triangle (although it's actually a British film) or, for the more trivia minded, as a footnote to the Bond films, with co-producer Albert R. Broccoli assembling various Bond team members five years before the event - the first M (Bernard Lee) and Blofeld (Eric Pholmann) in front of the cameras, production designer Syd Cain and special effects man Cliff Richardson behind them. The story is pretty simple: Robert Mitchum and Jack Lemmon eke out a precarious and less than legal living in Trinidad by ferrying tourists or the odd consignment of contraband in their rundown boat until one day their cargo - in this case displaced person Rita Hayworth, always one port ahead of a warrant - comes between them. Things reach a head when Lemmon finds himself trapped in the cargo hulk of a burning ship while Bernard Lee, Herbert Lom and Bonar Colleano try to free him before they're forced to abandon the ship in deep waters to avoid the entire harbor being destroyed.

While the first half of the film ambles along pleasantly enough, it's this section that really grips (and spectacularly eats up most of the budget), even though Mitch and Rita disappear for nearly 40 minutes while all this is going on. In fact, Hayworth all but disappears from the second half of the film entirely, having little to do once Lemmon decides to make an ill-fated smuggling run and making surprisingly little impact doing it, though it is your only chance to see her calypso dance with Tutte Lemkow! (Incidentally, it was while in Trinidad for this film that Mitchum was inspired to record one of the greatest albums of all time, Calypso is Like So: if you don't have it in your collection, you need to! Not to be outdone, Jack Lemmon is credited as one of the film's composers for his harmonica themes...)

There are few surprises (though Anthony Newley underplaying his part to pleasing effect is certainly one of them), but despite some clumsy editing in the early scenes it's enjoyable formulaic studio fair with a particularly nice use of old-fashioned CinemaScope, and Columbia's widescreen DVD has one of the best transfers I've seen from a 50s film. No extras other than trailers for Lady From Shanghai, Gilda and They Came to Cordura.

3 out of 5 stars A romantic trio in a drama of intrigue among small-time smugglers..........2006-12-31

Made on location in Trinidad, "Fire Down Below" was Rita Hayworth's return to the screen after a four-year absence...

During her screen absence Joseph L. Mankiewicz's "The Barefoot Contessa," which starred Ava Gardner as a Spanish dancing-girl who becomes first an international film star and then a Contessa, was released with great success... Although Mankiewicz had always denied there were fictional similarities between his film and Hayworth's own private life, most filmgoers and film gossips felt otherwise...

In fact they regarded "The Barefoot Contessa" as an obvious imitation or approximation of Rita's life, just as they had found similarities between her husband Orson Welles' film "Citizen Kane" and the life of newspaper tycoon William Randolph Hearst...

Therefore "Fire Down Below" had a sort of "built-in" curiosity about it and critics who for years had ignored Rita's acting abilities or were even willing to admit their possibilities, were now beginning to regard her as an actress instead of just a sex symbol...

Considerably older-looking, and playing a woman used and abused by many men, Rita had a few lines that contained cruel accuracies about her own life...

5 out of 5 stars Overlooked Gem with great star power!!!!.......2004-08-16

This DVD is an underrated movie that never seems to have gotten much attention. And it should have, because its a great movie. With a nice transfer to DVD,nice color and sharp picture. There are some fine performances from Robert Mitchum and Rita Hayworth. And as usual Jack Lemmon is strong,in a slightly more serious role for him at this time in his career. The DVD is a little pricey, and doesnt include any real features or extras.Nonetheless looks GREAT and is a fine little movie that i recommend to anyone who likes these 3 great actors/actresses.An overlooked gem of a movie that should be checked out.Cheers!

3 out of 5 stars Armies have marched over me.......2004-05-08

More football games have been lost and more movies ruined by bad time management.... FIRE DOWN BELOW has everything it needs to be a five-star classic - a charismatic cast headed by Rita Hayworth, Robert Mitchum and Jack Lemmon, a colorful and picturesque location in Tobago and Trinidad, and a compelling story of friendship, love and jealousy. Unfortunately, it practically grinds to a halt in the second half.
Felix (Robert Mitchum) and Tony (Jack Lemmon) own a tramp boat and make a living of sorts hiring it out. Felix is a crusty veteran and Tony is a fresh bud sowing some young wild oats. Life is good (if a little ragged) when Irena (Rita Hayworth) walks into their life and they agree to smuggle her to the small island of Santa Nada. Irena has a few secrets to keep and to escape from, and for $1000 Felix and Tony aren't asking many questions. They agree to take her there.
Will Tony fall for the dark-eyed Irena? Will Felix? Which one will she choose? Heck, we could plot this one ourselves and get it right. You can sniff this one out pretty fast, and there aren't a lot of surprises, but with a cast of this caliber it doesn't really matter.
The boys eventually have a falling out over Irena, and within a couple of plot-beats Tony finds himself a hired hand on a cargo ship. Add a little fog and another boat and there's a collision and Tony is pinned in the bulkhead.
And there we sit for pretty much the second half of the movie. Worried about the resolution of the Irena/Felix/Tony conflict, we're pinned under this plot twist way way way too long. Tug boats haul the ship into harbor, the US Navy is asked to winch or cut him out and we're along for each agonizing step. Minus two points for that.
If you're a fan of any of the leads this is worth your while. And it's pretty to look at. The dvd also contains Rita Hayworth trailers.
