1 out of 5 stars oxymoronic!.......2007-09-10

caveat emptor (let the buyer beware). the title is misleading, because this loser has NEVER given a great performance, save for the starclub gig, from any decade. and yes, i've watched enough footage on him to back that up. the most overrated artist in music history.

5 out of 5 stars A long overdue DVD for fans of The Killer!.......2007-08-12

This is the DVD that diehard Jerry Lee Lewis fans have been waiting many years for! Lewis will go down in history as one of the most flamboyant live performers in American music and the classic performances here are the proof you need. After all these years there still isn't very many Lewis videos to choose from, and until now there has been very little live footage available of the Killer in his prime. This DVD solves that problem with three different TV appearances from the 50's, a great appearance on British television from 1964, and two appearances from the 70's during Jerry Lee's period as a country music star.

Jerry Lee's historic television debut on the Steve Allen show in 1957 has to rank among the most wild and crazy performances in American television as he tears into "Whole lotta shakin goin on" like a madman! The Killer storms through the song with manic intensity, kicking back the piano bench and shouting the lyrics into the microphone as he pounds the piano keys with fury! This performance makes other 50's rockers like Elvis and Chuck Berry look tame in comparison. You can only imagine the horrified reaction of parents as they watched this performance in their living rooms in 1957!

Jerry Lee's performance of "Breathless" on the Dick Clark show is another example of Lewis at his flamboyant best, but the original recordings of "Great balls of fire" and "You win again" were overdubbed in the footage from the Dewey Phillips show which is the only real disappointment of the DVD.

Next we have a priceless, sensational British television performance from 1964 that is even more outrageous than the TV appearances from the 50's! This is possibly the greatest footage we will ever see of a young Jerry Lee Lewis tearing it up in his absolute prime. The Killer is UNLEASHED in all his wild, flamboyant glory as he rocks his way through a set of six tunes before an audience of fired up British teenagers who are gathered around the piano in a wild frenzy. The final explosive performance of "Whole lotta shakin" has the crowd of teens going crazy with excitement as Jerry Lee stands on top of the piano and tears the place apart!! This footage is a must-see for any lover of classic rock n' roll. It is a mystery why this electrifying performance was left unissued to the public for over 40 years and it is worth the price of this DVD alone.

At the time this performance was taped in March of 64, Jerry Lee was sadly boycotted from every radio and television station in America as "Beatlemania" was taking over the country. It is fascinating to see Jerry Lee having the exact same effect on a teenaged audience in England that the Beatles were having here in America. Jerry Lee proves without a doubt in this performance that nobody was rocking harder or better in 1964 than the Killer. Beatlemania might have been taking America by storm, but over in England it was "KILLERMANIA" exploding across TV screens!

The next two television appearances from Ralph Emery's show are much more tame and laid back. Jerry Lee had left the rock n' roll world to become a successful country star in the late 60's and 70's and he performs the great tunes "Who's gonna play this old piano" and Kris Kristofferson's classic song "Me and Bobby McGee". We also get some nice footage of Jerry Lee and his piano playing cousin Mickey Gilley who was also a popular country star at the time. Ralph Emery gives them a brief interview and lets them cut loose on a medley of old tunes including Jerry Lee's great rocker "Drinkin wine spo-dee-o-dee". The Killer's influence on his cousin can be clearly seen here as Gilley sounds a lot like Jerry Lee in both his singing and piano playing.

As a bonus feature we get a rare and excellent interview with Jerry Lee from 1993 where he talks about his early years, moments with Elvis, and more. If you are a long-time Lewis fan or a younger fan like myself who wants to explore the legendary pioneers of rock n' roll, this fine DVD belongs in your collection.

4 out of 5 stars the killer in all his glory.......2007-07-14

any chance to see this artist in the first 3 decades of his career is a real treat. The performance on the 60s Granada program from Great Britain reminds me of the Live at The Star Club performance in Germany; it has to be seen to be believed. Would have given this 5 stars but the lip-synching in the 50s segment made that difficult. I agree with the reviewer who ranked Jerry Lee as the premier rocker from the 50s although we shouldnt forget Fats Domino. Dont miss the Live From Austin City dvd by Jerry Lee that was just released.

4 out of 5 stars The First and Last Rock and Roller.......2007-06-27

While the performances are few, the 1964 London Granada set captured here are easily worth the price of the DVD. Jerry shows there that he really was at the heart of R&R in a way that Presley never approached.

4 out of 5 stars Essential.......2007-06-13

Ok this is a great DVD with some great performances and a interview from Jerry Lee in 1993 at Sun records.Plenty of highlights best for me is Lewis boogie in the section with Jerry Lee's cousin Mickey Gilley who was a country superstar at the time.It is interesting to see the different years including the first Steve Allen performance of Whole lotta shakin'.The quality is as good as you can get from I guess the sources they used with some Jerry Lee fan's on forums saying they could have used the master of the 1964 Granada show.If you want to see a discussion on that there is one on the new Jerry Lee Lewis forum.I can't put a link here but if you go to Wikipedia Jerry Lee Lewis page there is a link there. You can see some screenshots of this DVD taken from my pc on that forum.I would have given this 5 out of 5 but although it is interesting to see the Duey Phillips show it is lip synched (one of the few times JLL has done that) so I would have preferred to see another late sixties performance instead.I would recommend this DVD as it is great to see one of the greatest performers in action especially if you have not been able to see his first performance on tv or just like to see the Killer at work!

3 out of 5 stars "mqultra" The 60's Rock Experience Live.......2007-09-13

... This is a difficult product to evaluate because it's such a mishmash of material... audio and video quality between sound-tracks or DVD "chapters" varies considerably. There are audio problems in the 5.1 channel mode down-mixed into 2.0 channel stereo from a standard Sony DVD player into the test equipment which is a state-of-the-art Bose Acoustic Wave Music System coupled with monster brand cable connections and audio grade Xindak XF-500 power filters. The disc 2.0 channel stereo mode is mostly not bad and that is the primary option in the DVD audio set-up menu.

Musically speaking, I don't like Jim Morrison; Jimi Hendrix; Janis Joplin or Joan Baez with the exception of The Doors in the original "Apocalypse Now" movie soundtrack.

The best of the so-called "classic clips" of Credence Clearwater Revival "Down on the Corner" and "Bad Moon Rising" are totally cutoff abridged versions lasting only about two minutes and forty seconds, combined playing time. In other words, about half of their original running time in the original recordings. Audio & video quality in this case is also poor even for the vintage material that it is. There are also constant, annoying narrations and commentaries and commercials in between each chapter or music video soundtrack... PBS should've just flashed their distinctive logo at the lower right or left-hand corner of the t.v. every 15 or 20 minutes or whatever with no interruptions in between chapters or music video soundtracks.

Graphics are good, but there are injection molding problems in the fabrication of the plastic case... the disc spins around whereas it should fit snugly. The disc itself is only of standard quality.

In any event, the best of the live performances are the Byrds, the Grass Roots and Steppenwolf, by far. Particularly, "Magic Carpet Ride," but these aren't the complete original bands only what's left of them so the original "synergy" is lost. And for somebody who said that he "smoked a lot of grass, and popped a lot of pills," Jon Kay of "Steppenwolf" ("a symbol of man's alienation... and his strength") is certainly looking good for his age... he must be pushing 70 years old by now.

To sum up; in dialectic logic you can't fall on "fractions" so, if you want our opinion, we don't give "half" stars and this particular product only has a combined average rating of 3 stars when weighed against other similar products that are currently available on the market.

Note: When we say that the 2.0 channel stereo mode is "mostly not bad" actually, it's of considerably high quality in some instances like "Magic Carpet Ride" and under par or very bad quality in other instances.

5 out of 5 stars Great 60's Music Performed Live.......2007-05-20

This DVD is a must have for any 60's music fan. It is really great to see Roger McGuinn of The Byrds, Rob Grill of The Grass Roots, John Kay of Steppenwolf, Chuck Negron of Three Dog Night, and Scott MacKenzie still performing and going strong today. Also includes clips of some other great performing artists.

5 out of 5 stars The 60's Rock Experience is really far-out and groovy man!.......2007-04-06

One of the best features of this DVD is that it shows the complete music video from beginning to end without interruptions. I really hate it when they switch to an interview with the band in the middle of the song, and this does NOT happen on this DVD.

If you want to "take a trip without leaving the farm", then this DVD is for you! It's great to hear those old songs again and you get to see what the groups look like now and then. I am really impressed with this DVD.

Take it from an "Old Hippie", if I liked it then you will too!

Dan

2 out of 5 stars Cheesy at times.......2006-03-19

The good parts are choppy and along with the many comments on the fake applause: check out Let's Live For Today and Midnight Confesseions by The Grass Roots starring Rob Grill, the lead singer is not even playing the bass guitar. It is so obvious.

When I buy any DVD, I want to have an idea of what I,m getting. If the tracks are not available I don,t buy & even if the tracks are available I must have the full song. Most of us I dare say have a few songs from certain singers/groups that we look forward to and may end up an alternative song but that's OK as we are collectors. I'm 63 yrs young and look for oldies around the '60s. This DVD does not give me a clue of what is in it. B&W? No indication.

    Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Felt cheated by U.S. version.......2007-06-21

The U.S. version, brought to us by A&E, has only 15 episodes on it. Thanks to another reviewer, I found the Special Edition on the British Amazon site, and purchased it as well, and have been enjoying all the episodes, the special "movie" with two episodes blended together, and a reunion among the three main stars of the series, Stuart Damon, Alexandra Bastedo and William Gaunt--the first time in decades.

If you aren't sure of your DVD player's capabilities of playing a Region 2 DVD, though, you might want to stick with the American version. On your computer, however, most DVD programs will allow you to change the region code up to 4 times, and that is how I've been watching mine, although I do have a region-free player as well. The difference in price is nominal (about $15) and there are so many more perks with the Special Edition.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Series, but..................2007-03-27

This short lived yet popular series is still hyped up about in many countries. Stuart Damon, Alexandra Bastedo and William Gaunt are 3 agents of a Swiss based think tank "Nemesis". When their plane coming back from their mission in China (in the opening episode) is shot down, they are left for dead in Tibet, until they are taken by a mysterious old man to a strange room and are miraculously cured. That's really an understatement, they are also endowed with physical and mental powers beyond comprehension for 1968 (when it aired). Told to keep their powers and the existence of the old man a secret, they take care of the enemy agents and get back to home base, mission successful and go on from there, much to the chagrin of their supervisor played by Anthony Nicholls. Originally an ITC product in England, when released here, it only aired as a summer replacement series in 1968 and aired only 10 episodes of the 30 made. Then in 1983, 2 episodes (which we never saw, 1 of which being the first) were sandwiched together into a feature length story called Legend of The Champions to try to again offer it to our continent (a tad late). Since then it has never been around until 2004 when this set was released by A&E video here and another company there, but their company released both halves and a complete set which you can still get from "Marketplace Clients" on Amazon UK. However in July of last year, another manufacturer in England reissued a more complete set which includes the 30 episodes, behind the scenes goodies and "Legend" as well. I have just purchased a dvd player that can player overseas discs through this Amazon and my copy of the Complete Champions just shipped today. My advice, get a multi region capable player and this recent vintage (the one on Amazon UK that is) set. As of when mine shipped, I paid roughly $53 after currency conversion (including shipping) which is what you will probably pay for this set (shown above) here. Get the complete deal and enjoy it.

5 out of 5 stars Ambitious quasi sci-fi/spy series offers the goods...........2006-08-11

Yet another fine series from Britain's ITC stable, "The Champions," despite the comic book premise, was an imaginative and fairly well done series extolling the exploits of three superhuman agents who received their extraordinary physical and mental powers from a lost tribe of people in Tibet. 30 episodes were made in all and the series made its debut in the USA in 1968.

The Champions, thematically, is in the same sci-fi/spy vein as 'The Avengers," but taken a little more seriously than the Emma Peel episodes produced around the same time(also available in a "Megaset"), by the three leads: Stuart Damon, William Gaunt, and Alexandra Bastedo.

While this set thru A&E is decent, I recommend purchasing the Network DVD set available via AmazonUK and in Region 2 encoding. This is the set to buy replete with director and actor interviews, PDFs of publicity materials, a feature film, commentaries, trailers, and the actors' screentest footage, among several other outstanding extras.

5 out of 5 stars Classic British TV.......2006-07-03

I watched the Champions when it aired on US TV more than twenty years ago. The quality of the show truly struck me. Here was a spy thriller with the twist that the agents had been endowed with more than human powers. There were no supervillains, but simply evil men. The plots had more incommon with Mission Impossible than the Wild Wild West. The super powers were low keyed and the episode usually focused on a single ability, such as being able to see in the dark or the ability to remain under water for six to nine minutes.

5 out of 5 stars International Espionage accented with Fun!.......2005-09-29

This set represents the first 15 episodes of a 30-episode total of the series, THE CHAMPIONS. Stuart Damon (fresh from being Prince Charming to Leslie Ann Warren's Cinderella, and who went on to soap opera fame), Alexandra Bastedo, and William Gaunt (you'll know this BBC actor when you see him) play agents of Nemesis, an international organization of trouble-shooters based in Geneva. They are on a mission in Red China when their plane crashes in the Himalayas. Rescued from death by an unknown & anonymous group of people, they are endowed with special powers of strength & psychic abilities that must be kept secret, even from their boss Tremayne.

The tone of the series is similar in nature to The Saint (Roger Moore's), Dr. Who, and The Avengers; this is not surprising considering that Dennis Spooner & Brian Clemens were driving forces in all four series. (Terry Nation wrote several of the episodes.) The twist on this show is the increased abilities, with the emphasis on the psychic/paranormal skills, which makes it a cross between standard espionage and science-fiction. Although the late 60's wardrobe, hair styles, and dialogue are a bit dated, the series is set in the Cold War. Nemesis is a top-secret agency that can only be called in by other agencies. NATO enters in to a lot of the plots; bad guys are trying to manipulate the world. The trio tackle that which cannot be done, and do the amazing - all to the bafflement of their boss who hasn't got a clue as to how they manage it all.

The show is good, clean, enjoyable fun. Damon is Craig Sterling, the brash American with a ready smile. Gaunt is Richard Barrett, the sober Brit with dry humour. Bastedo is Sharon Macready, the lovely female operative who can take out any bad guy on her own without getting her hair mussed or appearing less than frail. They balance well, taking turns pulling each other out of dangerous situations.

If you have ever been a fan of Dr. Who, The Saint, The Avengers, The Protectors, or The Persuaders, you are in for a treat. I had seen two episodes (poor VHS copies) prior to the release of this 4 disc DVD set. The quality of the transfers on these discs is outstanding. I only hope A&E sees fit to release the rest of the series - and SOON!

Tackling an entire decade--and a turbulent one at that--within a three-hour movie is a challenge, and while The '60s is frequently entertaining, it unfortunately is not completely up to the task. Following the lives of four young people, three from a white suburban family with parents out of The Wonder Years and one African American from the South, the characters are forced into one-dimensional clichés; they are their personas to the nth degree. Katie (Julia Stiles), the pretty young blond, is the lost hippie; Brian (Jerry O'Connell), the former high school football player, is the gung-ho-turned-disgruntled Vietnam solider; Michael (Josh Hamilton) exemplifies the political activist; and Emmet (Leonard Roberts), the only representative of the entire black movement of the '60s, plays first the pacifist who effects change through nonviolent means and then the Black Panther, and then he finally returns to his nonviolent ways. Yet, despite the trite characters and slow beginning, the movie picks up pace as each becomes involved in his or her own story. They become strangely compelling, to the point where you are sorry when the story switches to another character because you want to see more.

An eclectic shooting style--a mixture of archival footage, seamlessly spliced with shots of the miniseries in black and white, which then becomes color--effectively places the characters in the '60s context. You can believe that these folks were at the Democratic Convention in Chicago or the Watts riots or Woodstock. Yet, sometimes a break is needed: the film is unrelenting in presenting crisis after crisis with no respite, making one wonder if there were any quiet, simple, or nice moments in the entire decade. The sentimental soundtrack plays continuously, helping set the appropriate tone and the frenetic atmosphere of the movie. For those who lived through the '60s, this miniseries provides a nostalgic look back at the various movements and a general feel of the time, especially with the proliferation of film clips that aren't oft repeated (we've all seen the moon landing ad nauseam, but footage of Abbie Hoffman or Dylan playing the club scene in the East Village is refreshing). And for those born after this period, this miniseries makes the decade look like a frenzied, troubled mess that we can be grateful we had the good fortune to miss. --Jenny Brown

I saw this when it originally aired on TV, and there was a scene (right before the 7 minutes in heaven scene) that showed the family watching the Beatles on Ed Sullivan. What happened to it? It was cut out of the DVD and VHS versions!! The Beatles were a HUGE part of the 60's and should be included!!!! This is a butchered edition!!!!

      5 out of 5 stars $80.00!!!.......2007-06-29

I saw this movie a long time ago on televison & I liked it. But there is no way I'm paying $80.00 for it. Come on people!!!

5 out of 5 stars See it today!.......2006-06-18

This is absolutely one of my most favorite movies of all time. I can watch it over and over. It has a great cast & really makes you feel like you were there. I have also seen 'The 70's' and I wish NBC would do all the decades from last century.

3 out of 5 stars Something major was missing!.......2006-02-14

This was a reasonably good movie, with one huge flaw: it completely ignored the musical and cultural force that virtually shaped the whole decade. I'm referring to the Fab Four -- the Beatles. They're not even mentioned in the entire movie! The only justification I can provide is that there must have been some legal problems in obtaining permissions for songs, images, etc. Whether you are a Beatle fan or not, you must admit that they were a driving force for change (both musical and social) for the '60s generation. Otherwise, the movie was good (especially Katie & Sara, my two favorite characters).

      5 out of 5 stars 40 dollars.......2005-08-01

I think the price for this movie is tacky, its ok but I have seen it in the bargan bins and some stores, I buy a lot of stuff from amazon but the price for this movie is way too much for what you get

      Description

In the late 1950s, a fresh, unconventional style of standup comedy emerged in sharp contrast to the standard "Take my wife, please" approach. It tackled such previously taboo subjects as sex, religion, drugs, and politics, and ushered in an avant-garde era of comedy that was decidedly more cerebral, satirical, and improvisational than before. Practitioners of this new art form included JONATHAN WINTERS, BILL COSBY, BOB NEWHART, SHELLEY BERMAN, and, later, RICHARD PRYOR, GEORGE CARLIN, THE SMOTHERS BROTHERS, STEVE MARTIN, ANDY KAUFMAN, and LILY TOMLIN, just to name a few.

Here are many of the maverick comedians who took those big risks years ago and paved the way for today's current crop of outrageous, in-your-face comics. Many of these rare television performances have not been seen in 30 or 40 years.

2 out of 5 stars "CUTTING EDGE" COMEDIANS NOT CUTTING ENOUGH FOR ME.......2007-06-27

When I read about this DVD on Amazon I thought it would be a great compilation of some of the greatest comedians of yesteryear. Maybe I expected too much from clips that were made in the sixties and seventies, when broadcast regulations bolstered censorship rulings. George Carlin and Richard Pryor in particular, appeared bland and flat.

I guess for me the interesting thing about this DVD was witnessing the transformation some of today's most raucous and rebellious comedians made. Still, overall I was disappointed.

      1 out of 5 stars Total disappointment.......2007-06-18

Cutting edge comedians, without their cutting edge material. What a letdown... only the safest routines, with completely inane commentary ("One thing is certain. We all like to laugh." How profound.)

      Don't waste your money.

5 out of 5 stars An Amazing Lineup.......2007-04-10

What a fascinating "lineup" spanning decades of standup! Great fun to see some of the early standup work of Newhart, Sahl, Cambridge, etc. And the early-and-later appearances of Carlin and Pryor are nothing short of astonishing. They start as clean-cut, fairly conventional comics in suit and tie, then, when they let their hair down (literally), it's like they've become entirely different people. Never saw a lot of the color appearances with Andy Kaufman and Lily Tomlin. Very cool. Bonus of commercials with comedians is fun, too.
