In Hayao Miyazaki's magical Kiki's Delivery Service, a 13-year-old girl meets the world head on as she spends her first year soloing as an apprentice witch. Kiki (Kirsten Dunst) is still a little green and plenty headstrong, but also resourceful, imaginative, and determined. With her trusty wisp of a cat Jiji (a gently subdued Phil Hartman) by her side she's ready to take on the world, or at least the quaintly European seaside village she's chosen as her new home. Miyazaki's gentle rhythm and meandering narrative capture the easy pulse of real life (even if his subject is a girl flying high upon a broomstick) and charts the everyday struggles and growing pains of his plucky heroine with sensitivity and understanding. Beautifully detailed animation and the rich designs of the picture-postcard seaside town of red-tiled roofs and cobblestone streets only add to the sense of wonder. This charming animated fantasy is a wholesome, life-affirming picture that doesn't speak down to kids or up to adults. --Sean Axmaker
Description
Rarely does a film touch so many hearts or reach such artistic heights as the highly acclaimed KIKI'S DELIVERY SERIVCE, the magical adventure of an enterprising young girl who must follow tradition to become a full-fledged witch. Venturing out with only her chatty black cat Jiji, KiKi flies off for the adventure of a lifetime. Landing in a far-off city, she sets up a high-flying delivery service. Here begins a wonderful experience of independence and responsibility as she finds her place in the world. The breathtaking animation of the legendary Hayao Miyazaki and the star voice talents of Kirsten Dunst (KiKi), Phil Hartman (Jiji), Matthew Lawrence (Tombo), and more make KIKI'S DELIVERY SERVICE soar with an energy, excitement, and the kind of imagination that entertains again and again!

Old-School Animation for the Whole Family.......2007-08-02
The American release of Kiki's Delivery Service contains two great movies: the American version with superb new voices by Dunst, Garofalo, Hartmann, et al. and the original Japanese version. Common to both is the beautiful old-school animation and a story that will delight adults as well as 13-year-old girls. But the two differ in the way they portray the characters and set the tone of the story, most notably in the way Hartmann and Sakuma play the cat in their respective versions. I recommend this film to anyone who enjoys animation and especially to parents to watch with their daughter. Try watching it first with the English voices, then with the Japanese voices and no subtitles to experience the original version.
What's up with the chapters.......2007-07-15
Lovely movie about a 13 year old witch leaving home to complete her training. Nothing to add beyond what has already been said.
However, I have found that on my primary DVD player, the last chapter (Gonna Fly and End Credits) will not play at all. It will play on other players, just not on mine.
Fresh, Lovely, Humorous, Uplifting: Another Miyazaki Delight.......2007-07-03
Kiki's Delivery Service has the same sort of optimistic delightfulness as that other much-beloved and much-praised Miyazaki offering, My Neighbor Totoro. It has a way of making you not only wish you were young again, but it actually makes you feel as if a few years (or decades) have fallen away and the world is all shiny again, and so are you.
There is no villain. There is no terrible abuse or viciousness. This is a totally sparkly story of a young witch who is sent from home to get her training, which means traveling to a new town and living there for a year. (To some, that might sound rather harsh, like child labor or a dangerous lack of parenting wisdom.) You have to surrender yourself to the idea of this rite of passage, and that Kiki will be all right.
She ends up with her cat, her radio, her purple witch's dress, her mother's trusty broom, in a new city, where she befriends a kindly bakery shop owner who lets her live in the attic. From there, Kiki embarks on a delivery service, taking packages on her broom. The story follows that journey in setting up her business and learning about her capabilities and flaws, as wella as her new city world.
The magic is in the details of both the story and the artwork. The city is beautifully done, and the city feels like a welcoming European city, with some buildings as stately and rich as Viennese jewels and others having a more Mediterranean seaside feel. It's a city that you'd want to visit, and the artwork makes it accessible. The sky takes on astounding colors and depth at times. Small details of characterization in expression and movement--in both humans and animals--or in the setting--a bit of grocery that falls to the floor, the way toes are depicted--add to the richness and are so charming.
And Kiki's a typical 13 year old of a more innocent age--she can be hasty, emotional, enthusiastic, helpful, worried about fashion, respectful of elders, and she is inately good and kind and industrious. (Miyazaki's films seem to uphold the value of kindness, compassion, and hard work quite a bit.) She finds out things about her own abilities, and she makes friends.
Kirsten Dunst does a terrific job of voicing Kiki, and the tone has the ebullience and girlishness that's perfect for the characer. The late Phil Hartman is an amusing black cat familiar.
It's a gentle story, but it's never boring. Even my 47 year old engineer husband found it a fun, sweet, watchable tale.
There is this enveloping magic that I've found in Mr. Miyazaki's movies, whether it's My Neighbor Totoro or Spirited Away or Howl's Moving Castle, there is something in the combination of story and character and artwork that makes you feel the wonder again of being young and diverted by the adventures in magical worlds where good, ultimately, wins out over bad.
This is the sort of film parents and kids can treasure together. And if you've seen or read or heard too many dark and terrible things, this is the sort of movie that restores a bit of youthful innocence.
Highly Recommended.
One of the VERY rare movies I can watch over and over.......2007-06-03
Other reviews go into great detail about the plot, and how the voice casting and dubbing are great (they are!), and how Hayao Miyazaki is great (also true!) so I'll skip all that.
The main point I'd say to prospective buyers of any age is that this is a NICE movie you will enjoy for years, no matter your age. Kiki has troubles and setbacks, but this is not a dark disturbing movie at all, and the animation itself has a kind of light tone.
After viewing this with my kid for I think the 11th time, I'm compelled to observe that not only do I not get tired of this movie at all, but each time I notice new things and enjoy it all over again. I believe you will too.
worth 50 stars!.......2007-04-06
This is by far my family's favorite movie. It is a tender yet exciting story that is full of adventure. My kids like it because it doesn't have any "bad guys". Beautifully animated!!

Move over, Vin Diesel, because The Transporter, Hong Kong action veteran Corey Yuen's English-language directorial debut, is revving up to steal your thunder. As the other top-billed action star to emerge in 2002, British hunk Jason Statham--previously seen in Snatch, Ghosts of Mars, and The One--plays a hard-driving courier for well-heeled underworld clients. He follows simple rules: (1) Stick to the deal; (2) Don't ask names; and (3) Don't look in the packages he transports. All's well until he violates rule 3, discovering a Chinese beauty (Qi Shu) in the trunk of his tricked-out BMW, and foiling a deadly plot to smuggle Chinese slaves through the port of Marseilles. The first hour is ass-kickin' fun, and the stuntwork is impressive throughout, even as the plot degenerates into a predictable series of bone-breaking showdowns. Statham boasts an appealing combination of brains and brawn, suggesting the suave versatility of a promising career. Coproduced by action auteur Luc Besson and filmed on dazzling French locations, The Transporter is an action fan's delight. --Jeff Shannon

Some Rules Should Never Be Broken..........2007-09-10
'Some Rules Should Never Be Broken' could have easily been a tagline used in the advertising for this movie. Sometimes when we break the rules the consequences really hit us hard, which is the case for the main character Frank Martin, in the Cory Yuen (acclaimed Japanese action film director) directed surprise smash hit "The Transporter" starring Jason Statham.
"The Transporter" focuses on ex-special forces soldier Frank Martin (Jason Statham) who makes a living transporting various items for high-paying clients who value timeliness, reliability, and above all else, secrecy. He is a man whose life is dictated by a strict set of rules that he abides by; however, on his most recent job Frank makes a costly mistake. He breaks what could be called his 'Cardinal rule', the one that dictates the transporter is to never open the package he is delivering. But once the rule is broken there's no going back. Now, Frank finds himself on the run with the very package he was assigned to deliver, a young Asian girl who has been trailing an international slave trading ring, and he must summon all of his training if both himself and his package are to survive the pursuit.
I'll be honest, when this movie was first advertised to arrive in theaters, I really didn't give much thought to seeing it. There didn't seem to be all that much appeal to my tastes in the movie. To me, I thought it was just another mindless action flick with little to no story, having one action scene after another being held together by flimsy dialogue that wouldn't have even been acceptable by B-movie standards. So, needless to say I merely forgot about the movie for quite some time, until I happened to catch a glimpse of the trailer for the sequel. What caught my eye with this preview was the fact that if this kind of movie was getting a sequel, then maybe there was more to the original film than I had given it credit for. So, shortly before the release of the sequel, I decided to break down and rent "The Transporter" figuring if nothing else, it will distract me for at least 90 minutes, and who knows maybe I'll even be entertained on some level. After all, someone must have thought the original was pretty good if it warranted a theatrically released sequel rather than one that is straight-to-DVD as most sequels of this variety would have been.
The story for "The Transporter" isn't deep by any means, lets not kid ourselves about that. Even though it's not all that original, and contains a basic plot that has been used countless times before, the dialogue was surprisingly well-written, and the fights were flat-out impressive during some of the action sequences, that you easily overlook the simplicity of the story. Of course, when watching a movie such as this, you really aren't looking for something all that complicated, so there are times when simplicity is the better way to go, and this movie is definitely one of those times.
But this movie would have been nothing if not for the charismatic screen presence of the movie's lead, Jason Statham ("The Italian Job"). Statham brought such an easy going attitude to the character of Frank Martin, when coupled with his intense charisma and screen presence, he took what was a run-of-the-mill action flick and elevated it into a hugely entertaining and memorable action movie that thrills audiences from start to finish. The supporting actors were mostly solid in their performances, all the characters were heavily cliched, but some of the actors appeared to take it upon themselves to add depth to their characters, allowing for a much more enjoyable experience. It's no doubt in my mind that they were the primary reasons that this movie wound up becoming a big hit in theaters, raising this film above the mediocrity it was most likely destined for.
Regardless of how good the actors or the story for any action movie may be, the movie will be nothing if it doesn't feature impressive action sequences that blow the audiences socks off. Which is exactly what many of the numerous action scenes do in "The Transporter", and what's more impressive is that Jason Statham performed a majority of all his stunts. With his intense screen presence that can't be ignored, and his impressive athletic ability as showcased in the numerous fight/stunt sequences it's easy to see why Statham is quickly becoming Hollywood's newest action hero.
If you are a fan of martial arts movies, action films from the likes of Steven Seagal and Jean Claude Van Damme, then "The Transporter" is a movie that will be of great interest to you. And in my opinion, will entertain you ten times more than any of Seagal or Van Damme's efforts from recent years, plus the acting and storytelling are better than most entries are in this genre.
"The Transporter" is rated PG-13 for violence, language, and sensuality.
Not much of a let down but fun to watch.......2007-08-30
The opening third of the flick is by far the best part. Frank Martin lives by his three rules: never alter the deal, no names, never open the package. Up until he breaks one of his rules the movie is an interesting look at a man who lives by his own terms in an extremely violent and dangerous portion of the world. Unfortunately after he finds the girl the movie breaks down into a series of cliches and explosions that are less interesting.
I have liked Jason Statham a lot not just in those English gangster movies but in "The One" with Jet Li and John Carpenter's "Ghosts of Mars," he deserves to be a star in his own right and this movie co-starring a vehicle should have been the right vehicle for him. It's a shame he was given so little to do, aside from kicking the crap out of many people, which he does quite handily. There's a lot of talk about "rules" in this movie and the movie itself obeys the rules of martial arts onscreen, one being that when the hero is facing a bunch of bad guys, they're only allowed to attack him one or two at a time, and they're not allowed to have guns unless they stand so close that the hero can disarm them. Jackie Chan's classic shtick of picking up any handy item to use as a weapon is alive and well here, likewise Chan's trademark element of farce/slapstick, e.g. the oil-slick brouhaha. And we have death-defying stunts galore and tire-squealing car chases and all sorts of goings -on. Yet somehow Mr. Statham himself seems to get lost in the proceedings.
It's really not his fault. His character is very sketchily written, the plot seems to have been made up as they went along a la "Casablanca," and the desired chemistry between him and the Chinese heroine just doesn't happen. I don't know who the actress is or what she did previously, and she's, you know, cute and all that, but she just did nothing for me whatsoever, and apparently not much for Jason Statham either. She's no Bai Ling, let's say, much less a Lucy Liu or Kelly Hu or--dare I mention the name--Michelle Yeoh aka Michelle Kwan. She's a cypher and even the writers seem to have grasped that; look how long they keep her bound and gagged onscreen to try to generate some fetishistic interest in what's happening with her. "The Big Hit," another movie with a kidnapped Chinese chick falling for the kidnapper, only took about five minutes to generate the romantic oomph that his one never really achieves. The movie doesn't even bother including the usually obligatory closing shot of the hero & heroine alone together, as though acknowledging they were never really an item. Bottom line, I did enjoy this it's a solid action flick with a lot of high-powered stunts and a winning performance by Jason Statham in the lead, though one wonders what sort of movie would have resulted had Frank just closed the trunk again.
The Transporter (Blue Ray).......2007-08-23
Unfortunately we can not play this on our DVD we dont have Blue Ray or HD
So we were very disappointed
don't break the rules.......2007-06-20
The Transporter is Jason Statham's first big solo role in a movie, and it is a success with the followups of Transporter 2, Crank, and the anticipated upcoming film "War", where he fights one on one against Jet Li. Jason has participated in several films before Transporter in somewhat lesser roles such as "The One" and "The Italian Job", but the Transporter finally lets this man shine - and he brings a character to the screen - Frank Martin - who is intelligent, skillful, strong and one downright cool guy.
The movie has a good and promising beginning, showing off the cool factor of Frank Martin immediately. Followed quickly by an intense car chase scene, the movie never lets up after that - whether it be action or suspense. The story is not too interesting, but it is put together well. Frank discovers that a package he is transporting is carrying a live body inside. Frank's "tough-guy attitude" is worn down and he breaks his own rule by opening the package. The receiver of the package is no dummy, and realizes that Frank broke the rules and has his car destroyed. Frank, fortunately absent from his car during the explosion, seeks revenge but ends up with company along the way by accident - the girl inside the package. From here the story begins to take off as Frank becomes entangled in the situation all the more.
While there isn't a tremendouns amount of action, the spacing of action works well enough. The final 20 minutes are huge, easily containing the best scenes in the movie. I especially liked the fights in the bus garage and the final highway truck scene which reminded me very much of the truck scene from "Raider of the Lost Ark".
Transporter is a great movie for Jason Statham. I really enjoy this guy, and see a good future for him. His martial art skills are truly entertaining, as is his stunts and acting. This is an hour and half of just great relax entertainment.
The Transporter in Blu-ray: Action, Suspense, Romance and Fast Cars!.......2007-05-29
I loved this movie! The story was new and creative! If you like action movies and actor Jason Statham, you'll love this movie. Filmed in the French Riviera!
Video-Blu-ray: This movie enjoys a good transfer-not perfect- but good! You still see some video noise and image grain. Overall, Just slightly better than the SD in term of details with extra grain.
Audio: simply impressive!
Bottom line: You can't go wrong with this one! Action, suspense, romance and fast car chases. If the image grain bothers you, try the SD version-it's not as grainy.

Very Funny!.......2007-07-08
We remember watching this movie years ago and recently ran across it and just had to buy it. It has withstood the test of time and is still just as funny as it was when it first came out. Patrick Dempsey was soooooooo young and such a geek in this movie.
Definately a must see for Patrick Dempsey fans!

This is a great movie. I watched it when it first came out. I am a huge fan of Grey's Anatomy and when I saw Patrick Dempsy's character (Dr. McDreamy) I knew right away that that was the pizza delivery kid in Loverboy. It's full of laughs that will brighten any day.

Parents-to-be who are interested in the Lamaze method but can't attend a class will be happy to know they can learn it from this two-hour video. Taught by two certified instructors who are OB nurses, this is the only video course that teaches the complete method. Lamaze seeks to reduce pain through relaxation achieved by massage, focus, and a series of breathing techniques. The instructors share an easy rapport, demonstrating the exercises on each other before a roomful of couples and thoroughly explaining the purpose of labor, how to know when it begins, and its three stages. They describe medications and birth complications and include footage of both a natural Lamaze childbirth and a Caesarian delivery. While this tape was clearly shot in the 1980s (the hair styles and fashions are amusingly outdated), it does have new computer-generated diagrams, and the medical information seems up to date. The Lamaze technique itself has not altered, of course, and this tape remains the gold standard in that department. --Kimberly Heinrichs
Description
If you can't attend childbirth class, this video/dvd will bring the class home to you. "Having Your Baby!" is the only complete, step-by-step instructional video on Lamaze Prepared Childbirth available today that is taught by two nationally recognized, licensed medical professionals who are obstetrical RNs and Lamaze Certified Childbirth Educators. Recently redone and updated in 2001, "Having Your Baby ! " combines the best of an old fashioned Lamaze class with the latest in medical information and computer technology.
Now on DVD, all breathing techniques are conveniently condensed into one chapter for easy reference.
Don't be fooled by imitations, substitutions, or copies!
Unlike other videos which have an instructor talking to a home video camera, professionally produced " Having Your Baby!" takes you directly from the classroom into the hospital, labor room and birthing room, allowing you to see, first-hand, discreet footage of obstetrical procedures, epidurals, labor, vaginal and Cesarean births and much more!
Spectacular 3-dimensional animation helps you understand exactly what is happening during labor and birth; other videos show an instructor pointing to a vague diagram that is impossible to see or understand.
" Having Your Baby!" is highly recommended by leading medical professionals and childbirth educators worldwide.
Customer Reviews:
Great for first timers and as a refresher.......2007-08-10
I am my daughters childbirth coach. While childbirth practices have changed and improved since I had my children the information has by and large stayed the same. This video was recommended to me by the lactation consultant at my daughter's chosen birthing center and also recommended at webmd.com. Amazon.com was the least expensive place to buy it.
My daughter could not get into the childbirth classes at her birthing center due to demand so we went the video route. She seemed to be more comfortable with the use of these videos in the comfort and privacy of home. My daughter's significant other, and my husband watched the video with us. It is my feeling that being the only coach is too demanding. Only because some women have 5 hour labor and some women have 3 days. As a team, we will all be able to be on the same page should we need another supporter. Our classes cannot accommodate multiple supporters.
There was one peculiar thing about the video. It seemed to be shot in the 80's. It did make for good entertainment value and lots of giggles. My daughter said, "Oh my gosh Mom, did you really dress like that in the 80's?" I did have to admit that big hair and button earrings were fashionable but never did I sport a mullet!!
Highly recommended for first-timers and as a refresher!
Good DVD.......2007-07-17
A great way to allow visual learners the opportunity to understand labor and delivery! However, the significant parts of the video move quickly while too much time is spent on breathing and relaxation (which are important, but in the video they are so important the teachers almost take too much time on this). The video is outdated; however, any traditional Lamaze books that are read in addition to watching this video basically give you the same information. There have been some changes (like the discussion of pain medication during labor and delivery) since the times of Dr. Lamaze; but the breathing techniques are either the same or improved to help the mother get through the process naturally.
Make sure you read books on this subject as well!
Bad. Bad. Bad........2007-07-08
This video is so old and outdated. And the woman in it is nasty. Don't buy this. You do not want to see this before you have your baby. I wish I had gotten a book to read instead.
Okay, but..........2007-03-08
Basically the same information that the hospital parenting/birthing class gave...nothing new. In fact, hospital staff recommended against the old school "hee hee" breathing as it could lead to hyperventilation (newer techniques avoid this). The fact that this was OBVIOUSLY filmed in the 70's made it difficult to practice and relax as we both had the giggles. Finally, the pronunciation of centimeter as "sont-a-meter" was completely distracting. Worthwhile if you are not attending a parenting/birthing class at your hospital (which I highly recommend!!) as the information is good. If you are signed up for a class at the hospital, you can safely avoid this....
disappointed.......2006-11-06
the information is OK but is uninspiringly delivered and the appearance of the presenters is outdated. I would use this video as a last resort.

Lizard-like Draconian Louis Gossett Jr. and his mortal enemy, earthling Dennis Quaid, crash-land on a hostile planet during a brutal space battle. Forced to rely on one another for survival, they overcome their differences and become fast friends. You can almost hear them break into an off-key version of "It's a Small World." German director Wolfgang Petersen, so brutally honest with his film Das Boot, turns warm and cuddly on us with this intergalactic buddy movie. Much of the problem, though, is that the script sets us up for an intriguing encounter, then settles for a simple and sentimental resolution. Noteworthy set design and strong performances, especially by Gossett, push this beyond mere mediocrity. His performance is fascinating, as he must speak in an alien tongue, which he maintains with artistry and consistency. --Rochelle O'Gorman
Description
In this visually stunning sci-fi adventure, two warriors engaged in a savage, futuristic war between Earth and the planet Dracon. Crash-land on a desolate, fiery planet. At first, the human, (Dennis Quaid) and his reptilian, alien opponent (Louis Gossett, JR) are intent on destroying each other, the two stranded pilots gradually realize that the only way either of them will survive is to overcome their undying hatred.
Customer Reviews:
It's not quite the book.......2007-09-17
I first saw this movie over 15 years ago but purchased it because it belongs in any good sci-fi collection. I liked it then and I still enjoyed it today.
It is, in the strictest sense, a variation of "Robinson Carouso on Mars", but if you had read the book (which would have filled in some of the gaps), "Enemy Mine" shows to be an enjoyable interpretation of a classis sci-fi story. The worst I can say about this movie is the human space fighters are apalling in design and worse in set construction but they aren't the show.
Overall this isn't academy award material but it is a great rainy Saturday afternoon movie.
enemy mine.......2007-09-04
I thought the film was great, better than star wars at the time. man against beast with good special effects especially for it's time. A story that you can relate to with a good cast and a lot of emotion.
well worth watching.
Nostalgia.......2007-06-21
Excellent story line. However, you may be turned off by the old props and sets. Nothing close to what we have today. I'd buy it only if I wanted to take a stroll down memory lane.
Different sci-fi story..........2007-04-04
This film teaches a lesson from the other side of the political isle than I usually sit, but it tells it well. It is vaguely reminiscent of other films from the 1940's but I can't remember a title. It is a "know thy enemy" film, and teaches about culture clash. I'm not one to respect another culture if it demands it, but if it earns it I do. This film is about two warriors that get stranded together on a dangerously hostile world and have to work together to survive. They learn each other's languages, and culture in a way even a die-hard conservative like me cannot argue with. Perhaps everyone can learn something from this. The film is about right and wrong, and it can change one's perspective. In the end, I remember the audience cheering in the theatres.
I loved it.......2007-03-09
What a great movie. good time you have watchign this one.
Its a one of a kind movie.
if your a star wars or star gate fan like my girlfriend, you will truly like this movie. its the only sci-fi movie with ''sad'' part in it. really good movie suited for nearly anyone. watch this one with your girlfriend rather then your beer drinking pals.

During World War II, Hollywood's patriotic duty was to shoot stirring dramas and good-hearted comedies that celebrated America's brave soldiers and honored their loyal, virtuous wives and girlfriends. Which goes a long way toward explaining why this delirious Preston Sturges farce, filmed in 1943 at the height of the war effort (and of its director's powers), was delayed for a year while Paramount executives wrestled with Sturges's irreverence: in Morgan's Creek, the writer-director tweaked those stereotypes with his tale of Trudy Kockenlocker, a small-town girl who only wants to send our boys off with a smile. That she does, but she wakes up after an all-night party with vague memories of a dubious wedding and soon finds herself pregnant.
Trudy, played by the ebullient Betty Hutton, is wholesome, sexy, and something of a ditz, in contrast to Sturges's usual savvy heroines (represented instead by Trudy's teenaged younger sister, played by Diana Lynn). Trudy's savior is would-be boyfriend Norval, played to apoplectic perfection by the rubber-faced Eddie Bracken, who was never better than in this wide-eyed, pratfall-happy performance as the weary but loyal draft reject who stands by his girl. As Trudy's father, Sturges regular William Demarest likewise achieves a series of comic peaks as the exasperated and increasingly desperate Officer Kockenlocker.
Like Sturges's other Bracken-Demarest vehicle, the equally fine Hail, the Conquering Hero, The Miracle of Morgan's Creek was unique among wartime movies for its satirical sting and unblinking eye for hypocrisy on the home front. It's also enormous fun, a comedic romp that epitomizes Sturges's kinetic, high-speed style. --Sam Sutherland
Description
After a wild farewell party for the troops, Trudy Kockenlocker, a small-town girl with a soft spot for American soldiers, wakes up to find that she married someone and can't remember his name. Even worse, he's disappeared and she learns she's pregnant!
Customer Reviews:
The Miracle of Morgan's Creek.......2007-06-25
Preston Sturges's divinely goofy comedy is extremely broad, but still clicks, thanks to a bizarre, surprisingly risque premise only this director could concoct, and a kooky cast only he could assemble. Hutton and Bracken are mutually over-the-top as Trudy and Norval, creating a frantic comic rhythm all their own, but Demarest steals it as Trudy's volatile Dad ("Daughters!"). Love it or not, you'll never see anything quite like it!
Phew!.......2007-06-16
Watching this film was an exhausting, but fun experience. A great chance to see Betty Hutton in a non-singing role and also a great introduction to the work of Preston Sturges who I am going to have to follow up on.
Love that Betty!!!!!!!!.......2007-06-03
This is one of the funniest movies I can watch it over and over..If you are fan of Betty Hutton I'm sure you have already seen this one but if you haven't it a must. If your not sure who she is you need to watch..A little risky for its time. I just love Preston Sturges all of his movies are great..Really great supporting cast. Diana Lynn is everyones little sister. William Dermerest, Uncle Charlie on My Three Sons, is a blast as her father. Eddie Bracken great. Take time and watch this one...
Comedy Elevated to Greatness.......2007-04-05
A walk through a cultural museum of societal hypocrisy, The Miracle of Morgan's Creek, 1944 lambastes the mores of the 1940's. Since the action takes place in a small Mid-Western town with the usual local yokels and the newly arrived GI's, boy's and girls do without the preliminaries as the privates are marched to the grim reaper. The girls give it up with romantic heroism. The fumbling in the dark after an evening of spiked lemonade causes pregnancy and social chaos. Betty Hutton is the prettiest girl in town and the most innocent soon-to-be mother in history thanks to the movie code and sexual regulations left over from the 19th Century. She got married, but to whom? No sex without marriage of course, but what a convoluted script to get this idea across as to preserve the GI pin-ups honor. The laughs burst from the cover up. Preston Sturges, a true genius, pumped it up to the hokey, sentimental climax. Slapstick and screwball comedy are melded to a script that can be described as a screenplay converted to a play and then regurgitated to a film. The scenes are very long and the actors walk the town as though they were on a stage. You have to see the lack of quick cuts to understand what I mean. It just doesn't look like a Hollywood film.
Much has been said about the in-house players that worked in Sturges' films. William Demarest is hilarious, a pratfall a minute. Eddie Braken practically invents the lovable nerd. Diana Lynn is the most sarcastic teen ever. McGinty is the Governor of the Great State of Anywhere. All these stereotypes are immortalized in a million films since.
Are Sturges' comedies as important as Hollywood's classic dramas? Yes!
MY favorite movie of all time!!!!.......2007-01-18
I just adore this movie. Never has a movie made me laugh so hard! Eddie Bracken is hysterical as a nervous, yet willing boyfriend. Betty Hutton is gorgeous and the BEST actress in this film I have ever seen. Not like the generic's we have today. Without telling all about this movie, considering the time period in which it was made, it was a little risque'! I can't believe( and would like to know) how it got past the censors! If you want a serious good laugh, you've just got to see this movie. I know I've watched it 100 times and it never fails to make me break up!

An ex-con daredevil trucker must reinfect himself with white-line fever in order to save his wife and kid from nasty gunrunners in this enjoyably mindless, twisted-metal-fest from the director of Passenger 57. Longtime MIA action stud Patrick Swayze (who snagged the part after Kevin Sorbo had to suddenly vacate due to health problems) is even more expressionless than usual in the lead role, but helmer Kevin Hooks compensates with a seriously rocking country soundtrack, some pleasantly eccentric supporting characters (including erstwhile crooner Randy Travis and a way-over-the-top Meatloaf as a psychotic trucker preaching damnation by the dashboard light), and--most importantly--a whole lot of rolling iron getting smashed in spectacularly kinetic fashion. A low-down, down-home, cotton-picking flick that blows up real good. --Andrew Wright
Customer Reviews:
Doesn't Live Up To Potential.......2007-07-16
I really wanted to like Black Dog I really did. Unfortunately it hovers between watchable and turn it off for most of the film. The few action sequences in the film are clever ideas however they do not leave the viewer with the same excitement as many action clips. I felt bad for the actors, almost all of which are very good, because the script is very bland even for an action. The characters are very 2 dimensional and are not very original. You have The Loner, The Feuding Cops, The Lovable Oaf, The Stupid Kid, Token Black Guy that will inevitably die, The Religious fanatic, The hostage mother and daughter, and the just plain rotten guy. Many plot details will seem very familiar as well. The fact is with so many road movies out there there is a high bar in which directors must compete with. Had a better Screenwriter at the helm and focused more on the characters with more and better action sequences this could have been a fantastic film but what we get is a very lackluster movie that you actually feel pity for. Pretty much a let down but if you must watch it give it a rental but don't spend your money as there is nothing here worth seeing again.
Beyond silly.......2007-04-03
I watch (and love) zombie movies, so my ability to suspend disbelief or to enjoy mindless mayhem is extremely high. I don't even mind Mr Swayze in the right film. Red Dawn or Point Break? Watch them anytime. Road House or Next of Kin? Well, maybe not all the way through, but I can always make it to the next commercial break if I'm channel surfing and I see one of them. But this is so absurd, with such endless data dumps where Mr Swayze has to explain to the other characters his own back story or the inner workings of truck brakes (yawn on both counts), and with villains who are beyond comic relief to being just Darwin award winners, that it's impossible to sit through.
Black Dog.......2007-03-08
Ithink Black Dog is avery good movie. It has losts of supense and twists to keep you wondering who is the bad is. I would reccomend it to anyone who likes suppense.
Waste of Talent, Waste of Two Hours.......2007-02-10
First off, we're given a character that we can't really like: a man who lost his CDL and just got out of prison because he got into an accident that killed someone. Accident or not, someone died through his carelessness and/or incompetence. So what do the filmmakers do? Put him back behind the wheel. Strike one.
Swayze, in addition to driving illegally, is smuggling. Despite his supposed remorse for his prior offense, he has no problem taking a job that any moron can see is a shady deal. Big strike two.
One of the most ludicrous scenes is when his wife and daughter are kidnapped. The mom runs through the house screaming her daughter's name. The daughter turns around from the bathroom mirror with a blank-faced "Huh?" (uh...she totally missed her mom's panic-stricken screeching?). Then, as a reward for all this misadventure, the FBI cheerfully gives Swayze, the killer-behind-the-wheel, his license to drive again. Strike three, and bye-bye. I have no sympathy for this guy and his whiney family at all.
The director should have let Randy Travis sing for two hours; at least that would have given this film some entertainment quality. If you want to watch a halfway decent trucker movie, rent "Smokey and the Bandit."

House of D is a bittersweet, moving story of an American expatriate's painful decision to come to terms with the childhood he fled in early 1970s New York City. David Duchovny wrote and directed this comedy-drama; he also stars as the adult version of the film's hero, Tom Warshaw, an illustrator who has spent most of his life in Paris and decideson the occasion of his son's birthdayto finally reveal long-withheld facts about his past.
The bulk of the story, told in flashback, portrays 13-year-old Tom (Anton Yelchin) as a quick-witted prince of his neighborhood, a delivery boy who knows every eccentric on his bicycle route and a Catholic school kid fond of playing pranks on his clueless French teacher and soulful principal (Frank Langella). His best friend is the school's mildly retarded, 41-year-old janitor, Pappas (Robin Williams), and his advisor on matters of the heart is Lady (Erykah Badu), a prison inmate whom the fatherless Tom (or Tommy, as he's called in 1973) can neither see nor touch. Tommy's vivacity is an asset at home, where his mother (Tea Leoni), a grieving widow with a mounting addiction to pills, is slipping away from her son's ability to help. Duchovny's screenplay sometimes borders on the precious: A number of scenes are enamored with their own boldness and originality, as if Duchovny has been squirreling away lots of colorfully expressive storytelling details for years, and unloaded them here. But that flaw all but disappears in the glow of House of D's emotional resonance and honesty, not to mention several exceptional performances. Among these is Zelda Williams's work as Tommy's sage-beyond-her-years girlfriend, Melissa, whose name offers a suitable excuse to work a rather lovely Allman Brothers song into the soundtrack. --Tom Keogh
Customer Reviews:
If you love Robin Williams.......2007-08-24
For Robin Williams fans this film is a must have-I think it's one of his best roles. Also kudos to David Duchovney on his directing debut.
David Duchovny is wonderful!.......2007-05-23
This is David Duchovny's first movie that he wrote and directed, and I really hope that he writes more! He has done some directing on a few later season episodes of X-files, but in this movie, you can really see his talent extends far beyond acting.
This is a touching story of a boy growing up in New York, and how his friends are a janitor (Robin Williams) and Lady (Erykah Badu), an inmate in the women's house of detention (hence the name house of D). I won't spoil the story for anyone who has not seen the movie. I thought this movie really portrayed what it is like for a 13 year old boy.
David Duchovny puts in some very witty lines, that really make the film. You can see how intelligent he is, much more so than most actors (he's got a Masters in Literature, and was working on his PhD, when he got into acting).
Everyone should buy this film, especially at such a great price from Amazon.
I LOVE IT!.......2007-05-14
I picked it up on a shopping spree through the used movies at Blockbuster, and purchased it based on actors and plot synopsis. I suspect I find it especially heartwarming because like the main character (and Duchovney) I was 13 in 1973. Everyone I've shared with with has loved it and I'm here today buying a copy for my sister. And since none of the other reviewers mention it, let me give a nod to Frank Langela as The Reverend Duncan. I thought the film was beautifully done.
Magnificant Movie David D........2007-05-14
I was not sure what to expect from someone like David Duchovny as the director and writer. I was pleasantly surprised by the story and the characters in this movie. Scenes of New York are great and love that the character Tommy has so much "life" to him. Many of us growing up have experienced life as a child and as a young person growing up-the experiences Tommy goes through with his delivery job, friends like Pappas (played by Robin Williams), first love and kiss, becoming responsible to a parent that cannot care for themselves emotionally, and over all experiencing "life". Erika Badu also playes an important role of a female that was at "The house of D" D-stands for dentention center. Young Tommy would visit this woman for advice and guidance. I loved this movie and would love to see David Duchovny write and direct more movies like this. It helped me to remember being a 13 year old and all the fun I had even if I was a girl living in the 1970's California. Great work to all, and for the person who only gave you one star for this movie. Get a life.
wonderful film of a boy's coming of age.......2007-02-20
I got *House of D* thinking that I just might not like it. However, I was actually surprised how much I loved it, along with a few tears.
The movie is a flashback of Tom Warshaw (David Duchovny) , an American artist living in Paris. As Tom's son is soon turning 13, Tom goes back to a time when he was nearing 13.
Tommy takes care of his chain-smoking mother (Tea Leoni), who has a difficult time coping with the recent death of her husband. Although she is suppose to console Tommy, it is Tommy who actually has to look after his mother. Tommy also takes care or rather, defends his best friend. His best friend is a 41-year-old slightly retarded janitor and deliveryman, Pappass (Robin Williams). Meanwhile, Tommy is getting advice from female inmate, Lady (Erykah Badu) at the local women's house of detention about intimate issues (dancing, girls, etc.). Tommy cannot see her except her hands. They carry a conversation by shouting across as Lady is jailed on the second (or third?) floor.
With the exception of his clingy mother and his father's death, life seems to be good for Tommy. However, things take a turn for the worse when the mother overdoses on pills and becomes brain-dead and Pappass steals a bike. Ultimately, Tommy blames Lady for everything. Lady, realizing the severity of situations, riles him into further anger to make him run. Although Tommy didn't see her point, Lady was actually setting him free...to be a man.
The whole point was about a boy's journey/transition becoming a man. Despite the death of Tommy's father, Tommy had it pretty good as a boy. But, there came a point where Tommy had to lose a few things or rather, people before he could became a man. He loses his mother as well as the girl he likes. He loses trust of a "friend" whose advice he once sought. The hardest of all, he deserts his best friend. The irony here was that while Pappass was an older man, he would never actually be (or was) a man. However, in this moment, Pappass realizes that Tommny needed to go and find himself and gives his blessing.
Overall, *House of D* was a wonderful movie. David Duchovny did a superb job as a director. I'd definitely check out future movies directed by him. Go check it out, along with a few laughs and tears.

Small Town.......2007-09-12
For anyone out there that loves nostalgia, then this is for you.
The depictions of small town Canada/America couldn't be better. I had
seen this movie many years ago and had waited, in vain, for a rerun
on TV that I could tape. Thank goodness for Amazon. Whenever I feel
the need to re live those wonderful bygone times, I now have the means.
I highly recommend it.
Nobody has mentioned the music!.......2007-08-23
I first saw the film version of "Our Town" on television when I was a child. Something about it appealed to me; perhaps a desire to return to an idealized time. In high school, I read the play and was devistated by Emily's death, which was changed in the film, giving it a happy ending. Throughout the years and varias versions that I've seen , I have never been able to figure out what it exactly is , that the dead people were preparing FOR in the cemetary. But, my reason for writing this is because of the one thing that is never mentioned in any of these reviews : the beautiful musical score by Aaron Copeland. I'm am over 50 years old and just listening to Mr. Copeland's score starts my tears flowing. It is truely exquisite! I count myself lucky to have had the oppertunity of meeting him briefly in 1972, and meeting Martha Scott app. 10 years later.
Needs to be Updated.......2006-12-04
Boring. Stilted. Smug. Unfaithful to the source material. Desperately needs to be updated for modern values. Otherwise Our Town (play & movie) will be seen as quaint museum pieces showcasing early 20th century small town provincialism. Then again, the whole point of Wilder's play was to portray small town people in a warts and all manner. Purhaps the dialogue and setting could be updated to show the lives and mindsets of today's flyover state sheeple.
the same two reviews have been submitted for all three versions.......2006-07-24
the play is good, and the movie too as I remeber, but if there is something wrong with the dvd transfer it would be nice to know which version actually has the problem.
American Theatre Classic goes Hollywood.......2006-01-20
Our Town was adapted from Thorton Wilder's Pulitzer Prize winning play. It has three acts, each about a different aspect of life in Grovers Corner, New Hampshire as seen through the life of two neighbors, the Gibbs and the Webbs. On stage, there were virtually no sets. The film had full sets. The one truly theatrical feature the film retained was Stage Manager, who narrates the film. The film version featured some early performances from future Oscar winners.
The first act is A Day in the Life (June 7, 1901). We get to see a day in the life of the two families. The Gibbs are Julia (Fay Bainter), Dr. Frank (Thomas Mitchell), George (William Holden) and Rebecca. The Webbs are Myrtle (Beulah Bondi), Editor Charles (Guy Kibbee), Emily (Martha Scott) and Wally. This is the ordinary life of ordinary families. George and Emily are the same age and they have a crush on each other but they are too shy to express it. Most of the act revolves around this.
The second act is Love and Marriage (three years later). George and Emily are about to be married and each has their own pre-wedding jitters. But before the wedding we see a flashback on the day that George and Emily finally admitted their feelings for each other.
The third act is Death (nine years later). Emily has complications with child birth and dies. The souls of those who passed converse. Emily finds out that she go back and relive a day. Which makes her realize how much we take for granted. The one change that the film makes is here. In the film, Emily does not actually die but comes back to life to be with George and the baby.
This change in the ending actually lessens the film. But what is even worse is the cinematography. In the cemetery scene, Emily's head is often out of frame. And as she about half the lines, its very disconcerting. This framing error happens often throughout the film. Also the contrast of black, white and grey is often murky. You might say that it is the transfer for the DVD but I also have a copy of the film from Turner Classics and it is as murky and poorly framed. Therefore, it was probably the original print.
This is a wonderful play and it's interesting to see a very young William Holden. The best filmed version of this was the NBC production in 1978 with Sada Thompson and Barbara Bel Geddes but this is not available. So if you want Our Town, it's either this one or the Showtime production with Paul Newman.

In the tradition of meet-cute road films, Overnight Delivery finds two unlikely companions who make a mad dash to stop an overnight delivery. Luminous Reese Witherspoon plays Ivy Miller, an ambitious, hard-working college gal who makes extra money by "flash dancing" at a local joint. Ivy meets devastated Wyatt Trips (Paul Rudd), who believes his girlfriend, Kim, who attends college in the South, is cheating on him. Ivy helps Wyatt write an insulting break-up letter, but when a misunderstanding is revealed, Wyatt and Ivy scramble to stop delivery. This film shares more than a few similarities with 1999's higher-profile Forces of Nature, and while it's no doubt fluffy, and its setups derivative, Witherspoon and Rudd are very likeable. One of the film's notably sweet scenes is between Ivy and a local sheriff, who's fingerprinting her after the duo has been arrested. Overnight Delivery was originally written by the uncredited Kevin Smith, who penned the far hipper Chasing Amy. The film still bears some of Smith's trademark dialogue, even though the tone and look are far removed from his previous efforts. Larry Drake does a fine job as the determined delivery guy. --N.F. Mendoza
Description
When college guy thinks his highschool sweetheart is cheating on him, he and another girl send her the world's most disgusting poison-pen letter...via overnight delivery.

Great revenge movie.......2007-07-10
Great writing and acting. A must own. Resse and Paul work great together.
It was great.......2007-05-14
I saw this years ago and could not remember the name. It was great to find it again. I still could not stop laughing
Overnight Delivery.......2007-01-09
This is a twisted love story, you don't know who you want to pull for the guy or the girl.
Surprisingly Good Movie.......2006-01-04
I first caught this movie on Late night cable somewhere. Wouldn't have kept it on but Reese Witherspoon was in it. The more I watched, the more I enjoyed it. Since then I have purchased the movie and watch it every so often, usually with friends who haven't seen it. They too find it's quirky humor addicting. Amazing the similarities between this and another cross country "road trip". I will always prefer this, the original
