The third season of the WB's small town soap begins with the blaze that ended the second ("Like You like an Arsonist"). Dan (Paul Johannson) makes it out alive, but vows to seek vengeance on the perpetrator--even if that person happens to be estranged son Lucas (Chad Michael Murray). In the following episode ("From the Edge of the Deep Green Sea"), Dan's preferred offspring returns to Tree Hill. Will Nathan (James Lafferty) reconcile with wife Haley (Bethany Joy Galeotti)? It's her deepest desire, but Nathan has his doubts. Further changes are afoot. Haley and Brooke (Sophia Bush), for instance, move in together...which wouldn't seem so strange if they were in college rather than high school. Brooke and Lucas also try a "non-exclusive" arrangement (her idea, not his). When sexy schemer Rachel (Danneel Harris) joins the cheerleading squad, Brooke starts to regret her decision. Meanwhile, the delightfully odious Dan runs for mayor. Just when he thinks he's got it locked, Lucas's mom, Karen (Moira Kelly), throws her hat in the ring. But those developments are minor compared to the school shooting in episode 16 ("With Tired Eyes, Tired Minds, Tired Souls, We Slept").
Guest stars include Nada Surf ("Return of the Future") and season two favorites Fall Out Boy ("An Attempt to Tip the Scales"), while recurring characters include Peyton's birth mother Ellie (Sheryl Lee, Twin Peaks), and smug singer/songwriter Chris (Tyler Hilton, Walk the Line), with whom Haley collaborates again. As in the previous year, the finale ("The Show Must Go On") is a cliffhanger. Fortunately for fans, One Tree Hill was picked up by the CW, so resolution awaits in season four. Special features include commentary, deleted scenes, and a featurette about the making of "With Tired Eyes." --Kathleen C. Fennessy

One Tree Hill: The Complete Second Season finds life in an uproar for virtually every major and minor character in the WB series set in One Tree, North Carolina. Basketball sensation Lucas Scott (Chad Michael Murray), illegitimate son of One Tree Hill's resident J.R.-like figure, car dealer, and all-around monster Dan Scott (Paul Johansson), has left town with his Uncle Keith (Craig Sheffer) to start a new life. (Keith himself has split One Tree to nurse a broken heart after his marriage proposal to Lucas's mom, Karen, played by Moira Kelly, was rejected.) It's not long, however, before Lucas has second thoughts, prompted in part by Dan's recent heart attack and the mess he (Lucas) left behind with two girls, Peyton (Hilarie Burton) and Brooke (Sophia Bush). Meanwhile, Lucas's half-brother, Nathan (James Lafferty), has married the former's lifelong best friend, Haley (Bethany Joy Lenz), a union approved by the bride's parents but not by Nathan's mother, Deb (Barbara Alyn Woods). (It should be mentioned that Nathan and Haley, as with nearly every other young person on this show, are not yet high school seniors. They only look much older.)
All that's just the first couple of episodes of season 2. In the remaining 21, Dan temporarily fools everyone into believing he's a changed man following his cardiac crisis. In fact, he's worse than ever, trying to wreck Nathan and Haley's marriage, attempting to buy Lucas's loyalties, driving Deb into a drug-addicted stupor, pulling the rug out from beneath Keith (who took over Dan's dealership during the latter's illness), and waging a war, of sorts, with basketball coach Whitey (Barry Corbin) for influence over Nathan's destiny. While all this is going on, Haley leaves Nathan to join a music group, Peyton finds success running an all-ages night at a new club opened by Karen, Lucas finds evidence that Dan is cheating the IRS, Brooke's once-wealthy parents go broke, and actress Sheryl Lee (Twin Peaks) turns up toward season's end playing a mysterious visitor with a surprising connection to a major character's past. Whew. If One Tree Hill's first season succeeded in part because series creator Mark Schwahn kept, for a while, a tight focus on the early, rocky relationship between Nathan and Lucas, the second season works as a frenetic, ensemble drama with elements of camp and absurdity. The above-mentioned reference to Dallas villain J.R. Ewing proves apt in more ways than one. The final episode of One Tree Hill's sophomore season ends with its own, not-so-subtle variation on the classic who-shot-J.R. cliffhanger, leaving open to debate which of many possible One Tree candidates might have committed a foul (if understandable) bit of vengeance against a certain bad dude one loves to hate. --Tom Keogh

If you like the show- its a must have.......2007-08-23
one tree hill the complete second season is a great DVD set to have. I'm addicted to the show so of course this is why i feel this way, but if you have seen season 1 and like it you should definitley purchase season 2. It becomes more intesresting with new twists and turns, and great plots. The bonus features are great, including commenteries and little inside scoops no one else knows. Each character develops majorly and you will learn to love the characters even more then before- if that's even possible. If you are satisfied with this product, i would definitley recommend One Tree Hill The Complete Third Season as well. It is by far the best season and you will not regret it.
Worst of the seasons.......2007-08-06
I admit that I thoroughly enjoy this incredibly soapy melodrama, but this season was my least favorite. There's no basketball, newcomers Anna and Felix bring nothing to the table and have no chemistry with Lucas and Brooke, and the Haley on tour bit was ludicrous even as this show goes. Thank God for Jake and Peyton, by far the best part of this season.

One Tree Hill: The Complete First Season marks the beginning of a genuinely engrossing series that maintains, for a long while, an unusual focus on a single, powerful conflict defining the destinies of two characters. Adolescent half-brothers Lucas (Chad Michael Murray) and Nathan (James Lafferty) Scott have lived parallel lives in One Tree, North Carolina. They share a common father, Dan Scott (Paul Johansson), who has disregarded the existence of Lucas, his son by a one-time flame, Karen (Moira Kelly), whom he dumped years before to accept a basketball scholarship to college. While neglecting Lucas, Dan--whose hoop dreams never materialized--has spent his time almost perversely micro-managing every one of Nathan's moves on and off the court at his old high school, where the lad is currently an arrogant superstar under gruff-but-wise coach Whitey Durham (Barry Corbin). Nathan (whose mother is separated from Dan) is a child of privilege and has been raised to disregard teamwork, compromise, or the feelings of others. He regards Lucas, a basketball sensation on neighborhood playgrounds, as trash, and his own girlfriend, Peyton (Hilarie Burton), as a pretty bauble he can abuse and dismiss at will. Still, he's sympathetic; one can see glimpses of the human being struggling to emerge from under Dan's control.
Meanwhile, Lucas helps Karen run her café, hangs out with platonic best friend Haley (Bethany Joy Lenz), and pines for Peyton (herself a punky misfit at heart). He also turns to surrogate dad Keith Scott (Craig Sheffer)--actually his uncle and Dan's older brother--for support, and sees himself as a perpetual and doomed outsider in One Tree. All that changes when Whitey invites Lucas to join the b-ball team that Nathan dominates, a move that challenges the status quo of multiple relationships in a small community. For about a third of its episodes, this series from creator Mark Schwahn (who wrote the hit film Coach Carter) stays true to the suspense surrounding Lucas's and Nathan's changes in fortune. Then a bit of padding follows to the end of the season; there are 22 episodes to fill out, after all. But even as various distractions (a kidnapping subplot, a car accident and coma for a major character) and random events creep in (Dan, rather incredibly, takes over the team from Whitey at one point, thus coaching both his sons), One Tree Hill remains highly watchable. The writing is shaped well and organic, while performances are consistently excellent. (It's especially good to see Sheffer, perhaps best known for A River Runs Through It, again.) --Tom Keogh

Efficiency in ordering, receiving and watching product.......2007-08-12
I ordered this TV DVD which was handled with simplicity and efficency...I received this product even earlier then I thought....all the time I was being notified of the order I placed, when it was sent and a tracking number in case there were any problems I had to look into....I received the product attractively packaged. I always enjoy the DVD's of TV and Movies because they show behind the scenes....let you meet the characters of the show or movie and you get to meet the people who create, direct and produce the venture itself.
It only went downhill.......2007-08-06
The first few episodes of this show were surprisingly, well, good for a teen soap on the WB. Don't take that the wrong way, I wouldn't be writing this if I didn't enjoy teen dramas on the WB, but at the start this was kind of compelling in a higher quality way. The tension between Lucas and Nathan, Dan being a bastard in a more believable way, Craig Scheffer being, well, Craig Scheffer, and the girls being mighty attractive (with Peyton being every guys fantasy personality to boot). Then they started expanding the storylines, and by the end it all spun out of control and became an unbelievable mess, albeit a fun one, which is how it has remained. Still, "One Tree Hill" is as fun as TV gets.
"Oh No...I have cookie dough down my bra!...".......2007-08-04
In the beginning, I promised myself I would not get sucked in by another teen drama. But unlikely so many other trite tee-a-ramas, One Tree Hill is all drama of "ER" combined with the humor of "Buffy" all in a rather surprising and quirky package.
Lucas is a heart of gold character with the will to save everyone, who meets a girl, Peyton, a dark/slightly Goth cheerleader with a razor tongue. Peyton is the character that definitely won me over; she has this vulnerable sadness that just makes you ache for her to be happy.
Brooke, though a typical witch character...has a more hooker with a heart of gold complex. One side of her is so good, and one side is just rotten. Much so on Peyton's character (her "best" friend) than anyone else. Always keep one eye glued on Brooke, or she may stab it out.
Along with the many sorted characters are Nathan and Haley, and odd pair that just happened to be the fairy tale couple of the series. Haley her innocent charms, and Nathan with his Jock bravado.
Then there are the 'rents. Unlike many teen dramas, where the parents play about one or two minutes in the series, One Tree Hill actually has these 'rents playing major roles not only in their own storylines but in the teens as well. You'll love to hate Dan!
So if you want an excuse why you watch it, and you are older than a teen...just say you watch it for the 'rents, then all is copa;)
So if you are a fan of hardcore dramas, with a little a@# kickin, some insane one liners, and a whole bunch of chaos...then buy yourself some One Tree Hill, I don't regret it and neither shall you.
Amazing!.......2007-07-28
I have been watching this show since the first season. I have called it my guilty pleasure. The soap opera feel to the show makes you want to watch it nonstop wondering what will happen between Naley, the Brucus/Leyton triangle, Dan and his sons, and etc. The show's beginning is probably one of it's best. Plus, the extras on the DVD are pretty awesome.
Amazing series.......2007-03-17
I love this series. My boyfriend and I can relate to the romance of Nathan and Haley. My boyfriend is a bad boy like Nathan and our relationship is like Haley and Nathan's romance. The reason I am such a big fan of this series is because of Nathan and Haley's romance. This series is amazing.

You know exactly what you're getting in National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation: another goofball, slapstick comedy of chaos and catastrophe with Clark Griswold (Chevy Chase) and family. This time, there's no traveling involved: Clark and Ellen (Beverly D'Angelo) prepare for a nice Christmas with the kids (played by none other than Juliette Lewis and Roseanne star Johnny Galecki), when their home is invaded by backwoods cousin Eddie (Randy Quaid) and his brood, along with assorted other crazy and/or stuffy relatives. Complications, of course, are inevitable. The film is preceded by National Lampoon's Vacation (1983) and National Lampoon's European Vacation (1985) and followed by National Lampoon's Vegas Vacation (1997). Directed by Jeremiah Chechik, who went on to do Benny & Joon and the Sharon Stone remake of Diabolique. --Jim Emerson

If you haven't seen this movie- you should! It's very funny, and it's my favorite of the "National Lampoons". You'll really enjoy it.
CHRISTMAS WITH THE GRISWOLDS.......2007-08-23
This holiday classic just gets funnier every year. Full of classic lines & great sight gags along with one of Chevy Chase's funniest performances this has become a Christmas standard. The many hilarious scenes include Clark W.Griswold JR. stapling Christmas lights to his roof(and himself) and Clark blousing err browsing while shopping. The scene where Clark goes sledding always gets lots of laughs(it's classic Chevy Chase)! The music is good too as many Christmas favorites old & new fill the great soundtrack. This is simply a very funny Christmas comedy for those looking to laugh around the holiday season.

Amazon.com essential video
The second installment of John Ford's famous cavalry trilogy (which also includes Fort Apache and Rio Grande), this meditative Western continues the director's fascination with history's obliteration of the past. It features one of John Wayne's more sensitive performances as Capt. Nathan Brittles, a stern yet sentimental war horse who has difficulty preparing for his impending military retirement. All things considered, he refuses to leave before fulfilling his obligation to the local Indian tribe. It's a film about honor and duty as well as loneliness and mortality. And Oscar-winner Winton C. Hoch beautifully photographs it in Remington-like Technicolor tones (you've never seen such stunning cloud-covered skies). The combination of melancholy and farce (Victor McLaglen makes a perfect court jester) evokes comparisons to Shakespeare. Best of all, the scene in which Wayne fights back tears when receiving a gold watch from his troops is unforgettably bittersweet. If you view the whole trilogy, it actually makes sense to save this for last. --Bill Desowitz
Description
A masterpiece of mood and heroics, this second film in director John Ford's renowned cavalry trilogy (Fort Apache and Rio Grande are the others) features one of John Wayne's most moving performances as a cavalry officer in his final week of service on the frontier. Under makeup aging him some 20 years, he inhabits the role of a wily veteran who knows the sting of war and vows to make his last mission one of peace. The ritual of outpost life, the sweep of battle, the advance of the patrol beneath ominous skies: She Wore a Yellow Ribbon, an Academy Award winner* for its color cinematography, paints a memorable portrait of the honor, duty and courage in the finest tradition of the cavalry. And of Ford filmmaking.
Customer Reviews:
SHe Wore a Yellow Ribbon.......2007-08-24
This is a John Wayne classic and easily one of his best westerns and more especially one of his best movies period. The restoration on this DVD is absolutely fantastic. I couldn't find a blemish anywhere. Any real John Wayne collection CANNOT be complete without this DVD version of the film.
My Dad Love's the movie.......2007-07-26
I ordered this movie for my Dad and he has already watched it 5 times.
SHE WORE A YELLOW RIBBON.......2007-07-13
IF YOU LIKE JOHN WAYNE, YOU'LL LIKE THIS MOVIE. IT'S ONE OF HIS EARLIEST COLOR MOVIE AND DIRECTED BY JOHN FORD. JOHN WAYNE PLAYS A CAVALRY CAPTAIN ABOUT TO RETIRE. YES, HE FIGHTS INDIANS AND GUN RUNNERS, BUT THE FILM IS WELL MADE AND I REALLY LIKE IT. IT LOOKS AS IF A GREAT DEAL IS FILMED IN MONUMENT VALLEY ON THE NAVAJO RESERVATION IN ARIZONA.
John Wayne at his sentimental best.......2007-07-13
This is one of my favorite John Wayne movies. It precedes The Quiet Man by 3 years. The last time I watched it commercial free thanks to Netflix, it was interesting to count all the actors and actresses in both pictures. Familiar faces on screen is true of many of John Wayne's movies and is just one many reasons why they are just about all fun to watch.
Too bad they no longer make em like this!
MY FAVORITE JOHN WAYNE FILM.......2007-07-04
Although Red River, The Searchers, and possibly True Grit and The Shootist might arguably contain better acting performances from the Duke, this film is my favorite. Everything works in this film, and works well. John Ford loved the U.S. Cavalry, as can be clearly seen in the trilogy, and also in the Civil War film, The Horse Soldiers. While I love all the aforementioned films, this one is the one where everything worked perfectly. The contrast of Wayne's seasoned Capt. Brittles with the two younger officers, the lonely life Brittles lives with no wife or family vs. the younger men competing for the hand of lovely Joanne Dru, the comedy relief provided by the incomparable Victor McLaglen, the savvy wisdom of(former confederate captain) Sgt. Tyree, nothing is missing. This was John Ford's stock company at it's best, with perhaps only The Searchers to compare. The passing years only make me love this film more. everyone was at the absolute top of their game for She Wore a Yellow Ribbon. See it soon!!!

The radiant glow of Keeley Hawes--an English rose if ever there was one--anchors Under the Greenwood Tree, a light romance from the normally gloomy pen of Thomas Hardy (The Mayor of Casterbridge, Tess of the d'Urbervilles). When a young educated woman with the preposterous name of Fancy Day (Hawes, Tipping the Velvet) returns to a small village to care for her father, she finds herself pursued by three very different men: The poor but handsome Dick Dewy (James Murray, Sons and Lovers), the crude but wealthy Mr. Shiner (Steve Pemberton, The League of Gentlemen), and the erudite but pompous Parson Maybold (Ben Miles, Coupling). The story is slender but enjoyable, with hints of class conflict and the changes due to come from the impending Industrial Revolution. Hawes lends her considerable intelligence and charm to the put-upon Miss Day; she makes you feel the eroticism of washing your hands in the same basin with an attractive man. The accompanying "making of" documentary is also pleasant, though it goes on a bit too long about artificial snow. --Bret Fetzer
Description
In a small village in the south of England, Dick Dewy, a handsome working man, falls in love with Fancy Day, a newly arrived schoolteacher from a wealthy family who happens to be the village beauty. But other, richer men also want to win the hand of Fancy. There's Farmer Shiner, a wealthy landowner, and Reverend Maybold, the decent young vicar. Who will win Fancy's hand? And even if she agrees to marry Dick, will her father consent to the marriage? This charming, timeless story of rural life gave Thomas Hardy his first real taste of success, and with its rustic setting and moving tale of young love, it weaves a spell that still entrances today.

Don't Expect Too Much .......2007-09-11
I think I would have liked this movie more if I hadn't expected so much. I love BBC movies so I went to Amazon looking for some I hadn't seen. I read the reviews on Under the Greenwood Tree and expected it to be as good as the other BBC productions I've seen. It wasn't. If you watch it and don't expect it to be very good you'll probably like it.
Super.......2007-08-24
My husband and I totally enjoy period pieces. We tend to enjoy
all the old English literary work above American movies. This is
a story about social traditions of Victorian England and was very
well done. We love Thomas Hardy's books so of course we love the
movies.
Not a Jane Austen but more than "tolerable".......2007-08-13
Not nearly as good as Pride & Prejudice or Sense & Sensibility but an enjoyable movie to pass the evening...
This is a keeper.......2007-08-04
My wife and I own many movies based on novels by classic authors. Some are interesting to watch once but too depressing to keep or even watch a second time. This one combines elements of classic literature in a romantic period piece that ends happily, resolves the conflicts (except for the choir's future), is easy to watch over and over and proves itself a definite keeper. I had never read this Hardy novel (although I've read several others), and I was pleasantly surprised by it.
Tedious.......2007-07-16
An annoying film that is hard to sit through. It clobbers you over the head trying to get across certain points like the change in seasons and Dewey's "love at first sight" reaction to Fancy. There is a complete lack of chemistry between Fancy and Dewey, who are two unlikeable characters. They are too immature to be in a relationship, much less married judging by the amount of pretended indifference, miscommunication, and melodrama they inflict upon each other. I couldn't have cared less if they ended up together. The musical score was obtrusive and repetitive.

Customer Reviews:
MY FAVORITE HOLIDAY CARTOON VIDEO !!.......2007-09-03
This is one of the coolest holiday collections in Disney history. Three stories are included on this dvd.
The first one, I hate so i don't remember the title. But it's a very depressing story about a boy and his donkey.
The second one is a Chip N' Dale CLASSIC that features, Mickey & Pluto. (Pluto's Christmas Tree) I personally am a HUGE fan of the Chip N' Dale cartoons, simply because they are silly without losing their comedic value. I laugh THINKING about it.
The last one is truly the best: Mickey's Christmas Carol. I bought two copies of this movie and sent one to my friend's little boy because I loved it so much.
It's based on the Charles Dickens classic: A Christmas Carol and sticks to the script the whole way through. The cast of characters do an excellent job portraying all the original characters in the book! Mickey as Bob Cratchett, Scrooge McDuck as Ebenezer Scrooge of course, Goofy as the ghost of Jacob Marley, and even Donald Duck shows an excellent performance in the ALMOST miscast role of Scrooge's light-hearted, warm loving NEPHEW! LOL
The ONLY reason I didn't give this movie 5 stars is because of the depressing "donkey cartoon" in the beginning. I promise you it will be a joy for your family for years to come!
*PLEASE EXCUSE ALL SPELLING ERRORS!!*
"A DVD to Remember".......2007-06-18
This DVD has Pluto's Christmas Tree with those lovable chipmunks, Chip 'n' Dale. It also has Mickey's Christmas Carol which I remember watching every year on television growing up in the eighties. This DVD is worth it for those two alone. I have not seen The Small One. What would have made this perfect is if they would have also included the short where Donald is aggravated by his nephews and so a snow fight ensues (forget the actual name of the short). I remember they would air this one on tv as well right before Mickey's Christmas Carol to fill up the entire hour time slot. Still, this release is a must-have for anyone who grew up with these fond memories as a child. Just the music and singing in Mickey's Christmas Carol is enough to warm my heart.
I bought it for ONE reason only.......2007-02-28
I have two favorite Christmas Specials from when I was young - 1) How the Grinch Stole Christmas (the animated short, not the Jim Carrey movie) and 2) Mickey's Christmas Carol.
The Grinch is still shown (usually) each year, but it's been a number of years since I'd seen Mickey's Christmas Carol and I had to have it. Yes, it's the same old Dicken's story, but there are some CLASSIC moments (Goofy as Marley saying Scrooge will be visited by 3 ghosts but he's only holding up 2 fingers).
One of my favorite versions of the Dicken's classic.
I JUST LOVE IT.......2007-02-01
I HAD THE VHS VERSION, AND WE WATCH IT EVERY YEAR.
I LIKE THE THREE STORIES, BUT SMALL ONE IS MY FAVORITE
I WONDER WHEN CAN I FIND THIS DVD ON SPANISH.??
THIS DVD IS ALSO IN SPANISH?
Great Family Tradition.......2007-01-21
This is a family classic that will be come a true family favorite. Appropriate for all ages and especially great for those who cherish the holidays.

One of the Best Christmas Films of All Time.......2007-09-15
This is finally on DVD! Thank God! I have been so worried about my VHS copy deteriorating.
I wish I could rate this story higher. It is 1946 in the small town of Clear River, Nebraska, and Addie Mills, the lively, intelligent and artistic daughter of widower James Mills, who is being raised by her grandmother because her mother died shortly after she was born, once again broaches the idea of having a Christmas tree. Her father, who has remained withdrawn and embittered in the long years since her mother's death, as always fobs her off. Then Addie wins the classroom Christmas tree and takes it home...
This wonderful story was filmed and first broadcast in 1972 and shown on CBS. It was produced on videotape, which takes away a bit of the magic. However, it also makes you feel as if you are eavesdropping on this family, as if they were participants in a reality series. Lisa Lucas is splendid as the articulate Addie and Mildred Natwick is a charming grandma, but major kudos go to Jason Robards in the role of Addie's father. He could have been portrayed as a soulless tyrant but is revealed to be a desperately grieving and unhappy man instead.
The "look" of this special contributes to its appeal; the clothing, the sets, the classroom situation all makes you feel as if you are truly back in 1946. Paramount Video needs to release the three sequels as well; THANKSGIVING TREASURE is particularly good, and the fourth story, ADDIE AND THE KING OF HEARTS, has never been released to video at all. It sells on bootleg sites for $[...] and up!
(I have a web page devoted to Addie that covers the different specials and the books at addiemills.[...]. Hope you enjoy.)
A TV Film with a Good Message.......2007-08-27
This story is about a little girl who lives with her father and paternal grandmother. Her father won't let her have a Christmas tree because of painful memories. It is somewhat depressing or disturbing in parts, but has an excellent message. It's good for family viewing, but younger children may be disturbed when the father has an outburst and uses the h*** word. It is also 'interesting' to see the father smoking as you'd never see that in a family movie nowadays. It seems to be a Canadian production that appeared on CBC. It is filmed in a studio format, so it seems like a play (if that makes any sense) similar to the British version of the Secret Garden with Sarah Hollis Andrews. Anyway, it's a good movie and I would recommend that people see it.
About Time.......2007-07-29
Finally the greatest Christmas Show ever (aside from the staple of cartoons -- Rudolph/Charlie Brown) is available on DVD....now I can throw the video away:-)
A Classic Returns.......2007-07-19
It's about time that this classic has been made available on DVD. This Christmas gem first showed on CBS in 1972, and was shown every year for several years on that network (along with 2 forgettable sequels).
It manages to be very moving without being overdone, without manipulative music, without hysterical acting.
It is a simple story, simply done, and extremely effective. Jason Robards and Mildred Natwick are outstanding (as always) but the strength of the story is carried by the (then unknown) child actress, Lisa lucas. She is absolutely outstanding, and natural in this role (not at all the cute/cuddly Hollywood child actress that is often put in this type of role).
This story has been watched almost every year in my family, and will continue to be watched for years to come.

Nineteen thirty-nine is often proposed as the movies' halcyon year, and three reasons why were directed by John Ford: Stagecoach, Young Mr. Lincoln, and Drums Along the Mohawk. In that exalted company Drums... would have to be accounted "merely superb"--even if it's the best film ever made about the American Revolution and, oh, only about eighth-best picture of its year.
Henry Fonda and Claudette Colbert play newlyweds in New York's Mohawk Valley at the time of the Revolutionary War. That war is more a distant rumor than a direct concern of people with cabins to raise, crops to harvest, and firstborn on the way. When it comes to their valley, in the form of hitherto-peaceable Indians whipped up by a gaunt Tory with an eyepatch (John Carradine), life changes as though with the passing of a cloud shadow.
In this, his first color film, Ford created indelible images of the dawning of America: a lone wagon making its way through acres of long grass rippling in the wind; the Indians, at the onset of their first raid, seeming to materialize out of the mist, out of the very trunks of trees; a ragged line of farmers with flintlocks passing along a split-rail fence, then resolving into a column, an army, marching toward a distant horizon. (Utah's Wasatch mountain country stands in persuasively for upstate New York in pioneer days.) Edna May Oliver scored a best-supporting-actress Oscar nomination as a memorably crusty frontier widow, while Ward Bond--oddly omitted from the opening credits--claimed a place of honor in the John Ford Stock Company playing Fonda's best friend. --Richard T. Jameson
Description
Lawless frontier. Indian attacks. Settlers protecting themselves the only way they know how-with guns and courage. In the years before the Revolutionary War, the East was as wild as the West would be one hundred years later. Henry Fonda delivers one of his most memorable performances ever as a young frontier leader protecting his family in the backwoods of New York state. Claudette Colbert so-stars as his spirited wife. With a fine supporting cast that also includes Edna May Oliver and John Carradine, this is one of John Ford's most exciting historical dramas.
Customer Reviews:
Pioneering Eastern USA.......2007-09-11
This movie endures well, partly because it is historical, and therefore not subject to obsolescence, other than technical obsolescence - due to changes in filming techniques. These are not significant.
In its day, "Drums Along the Mohawk" was Academy Award material. Perhaps it would still be so.
I get caught in the drama, the danger, the excitement and the unbelievable hardships of the pioneers, especially the women. This movie tends to bring out all of those aspects of pioneer life, and because I am drawn in, I get a strong feeling of participation, even though I am sure I don't have the heart to be a true pioneer.
Good Movie This!!!.......2007-09-07
Educational, exciting, this one has it all!! Classic Henry Fonda, good supporting actors, lots of action...there was no FEMA to pull your fat out of the fire, this is a movie about self-reliance, hard work, and the will to live in the New World. Well done!
Lovin Henry Fonda.......2007-08-23
Well, being a great fan of Mr.Fonda since I was very young, it was great to get one of his older movies to watch on DVD.
Drums is a typically well done John Ford story with all the story sidebars and characters you can later regognize as the Ford "people", even a rather young Ward Bond.
This movie was based on a book of the same title, and is good enough to make you want to read the book, just like the movie versoin of "The Grapes of Wrath" does.
Neglected gem!...one of John Ford's finest films..........2007-08-05
1939 was a banner year for great films--and certainly one of them was "Drums Along the Mohawk" in gorgeous early technicolor about a period in history not often used as the subject of a major film. Henry Fonda and Claudette Colbert are fine as a young couple in the years before the Revolutionary War settling in the backwoods of New York state. The hardships of pioneer life are made even tougher by the presence of Indians on the warpath, the only refuge being a nearby fort where men, women and children find some protection.
Brilliantly photographed with lots of action scenes that bring the film vividly to life under John Ford's direction. John Carradine makes an excellent villain and Edna May Oliver gives another one of her priceless performances as an elderly widow who forms a strong attachment to the young couple. An unforgettable scene has Indians raiding her home while she refuses to budge from her bed even though they set fire to it. Scenes of Indian cruelty and torture are also present--but altogether a moving film well worth viewing to see what frontier life must have been like way back then.
Sentimental at times--but also harsh and realistic. Most memorable scene: Fonda pursued by Indians for a long chase over woodlands, finally wearing out his pursuers who collapse from sheer exhaustion. Thrilling chase!
A Rare Revolutionary War Classic.......2007-06-09
There are relatively few really good films pertaining to the Revolutionary War era, and this is one of the very best. It is a very fast-moving story of a young newlywed couple (Henry Fonda and Claudette Colbert) who move from the comfort of the city to the rustic and eminently dangerous 1770s upstate New York, in the Mohawk Valley, where the settlers continually battle the elements and the Indians, who fight the colonists as the proxies of the British. The film will definitely hold the viewer's interest as the couple, their community, and the young nation battle to survive. An outstanding film, on the same level as "Sergeant York!"

Lord have mercy!!.......2007-08-04
Why aren't these guys, like, the most popular rock band in the world right now? These guys have more talent than any three of my favorite bands put together - I'm talking Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, and the Beatles rolled into one. Love these guys!!! And they've put together an amazing concert DVD here. Next best thing to seeing them live. I'm in love with this band.
One of the Best DVD's I've Seen .......2007-08-03
I'm a drummer and also have an interest in photography/ videography. Being a huge fan of Porcupine Tree, when I discovered this DVD, I bought it immediately. The band plays great as usual during this live show, but what really impressed me was the camera work. The video company who shot this DVD really knows music and found some of the best camera angles I've seen on a live show. Their use of focus shifting and colorization is spectacular. It goes without saying that the band's musicianship is awesome, and Gavin Harrison's drumming is inspiring. If you are a fan of Porcupine Tree, definitely buy this DVD.
PT DVD.......2007-07-09
I was almost afraid to watch this. By some miracle, I was introduced to the music of Porcupine Tree just a couple of years ago. In Absentia was my first experience, and I fell in love with the music. For some reason, the music of PT touches me deeply and is like a salve for the soul. So, I was afraid to see the DVD, because, other bands that I really liked alot, lost the mystique, or something, when I saw them. But, not this band! Matter of fact, I'm even more taken with them. And that Steve Wilson is a hottie... I highly recommended for all fans of PT. As for anyone who's never experienced PT, well... You will either connect or you won't. If you can, you don't want to miss the opportunity.
The best rock concert video I have ever seen .......2007-06-29
There is no way I can add to what has already been written here, nor should I try. I just needed to add my two cents so that maybe that one more good rating will convince somebody to buy this DVD. It is THAT GOOD.
Awesome.......2007-05-30
Best prog rock out there today. Steve Wilson is a genious song writer. Musicianship not on the same level as virtuoso Dream Theater (that is - PT doesn't try to impress with speed and crazy good technique). But the compositions and lyrics are far superior (especially compared with some of DTs latest albums). This live performance does justice to a lot of PTs best/recent work. A must have for any serious prog fan.
