If not a seminal World War II submarine picture, then Operation Pacific is at least an entertaining one. John Wayne stars as "Duke" Gifford, first officer of the submarine Thunderfish. Patricia Neal is Duke's ex-wife, and when they meet again after four years, the couple tries to recapture "that old zing." Complications arise when Duke goes on a mission with dud torpedoes, and his best friend's younger brother goes after Neal. Fans will be pleased with Wayne's role, as the Gifford character is one of Wayne's simplest, but most honest performances. Wayne regulars Ward Bond and Jack Pennick are on hand as well; Bond plays sub captain "Pop" Perry, and Pennick the sub's Chief. The scene in which Pop tells his crew to "Take 'er down!" came from real life; a sub skipper uttered the famous command during a desperate surface action. --Mark Savary

Description

World War II rages across the Pacific and Lt. Cmdr. Duke E. Gifford is in the thick of it. He evacuates children from enemy-held islands. Oversees the development of torpedoes at Pearl Harbor. And prowls the depths in the submarine Thunderfish for a chance to aim his improved "tin fish" - torpedoes - at the enemy. John Wayne plays Gifford in Operation Pacific. "I'm no theory man. I'm a line officer," Gifford barks. He backs it up with lots of bite in several feverish sea battles. He's also a man of heart with a loving wife at home (fellow Academy AwardO winner* Patricia Neal). Vice Adm. Charles Lockwood, World War II commander of all U.S. Pacific submarines, was technical advisor for this adventure packing real you-are-there thrills!

This is one of John Wayne's best movies. I think any John Wayne fan will love it.

5 out of 5 stars This 2003 release vs May 22,2007 release.......2007-05-04

I recently bought (on 4/09/06) this DVD which notes "standard version" and "presented in a format preserving the aspect ratio of its original theatrical exhibition." Amazon is now taking pre-orders for a new May 22, 2007 release, stating it's in widescreen. How can this be? Is part of the top and/or bottom of the film cut off?

5 out of 5 stars .....It's Time To Set The Record Straight............2007-04-20

John Wayne's intrepid portrayal in this movie was taken from true life US Navy happenings that are skillfully blended for substenance for the backdrop of this story...John Wayne needs not to apoligize, either...there was...the raising of the USS Squaliss in 1939 just off the coast of Boston...there was...a US Navy rescue of Catholic Nuns and children from Guadalcanal before the 1st Marine Division's invasion of that island...there was...the sinking of the USS Corvina as noted in this film, as well as other disclosures stated by other Reviewers in here..."Operation Pacific" for whatever warts [imagined or not] is a monumental tribute to the Navy's Silent Service...I admit there were a couple of John Wayne moments, but that's to be expected, [pogey-bait time]...they didn't wrinkle my feathers one iota...I like the guy...the camera was very exquisite in the close/ups of Patricia Neal...wonderous close/ups of her adorable face in fadeout scenes...you can't tell me that these two [2] 'love/birds' maybe carried on/off screen??...Wayne and Neal generated plenty of 'steam' at those dockside scenes...look more closely...just read the know-it-all smirks [of envy] from the other male/stars at the dockside footage...that white-hot tidbit aside, a darn good Navy show and the intrinsic operation of submariner duty deep below the waves...Ward Bond was terrific, Scott Forbes made you notice his contribution, Martin Milner, as the young Ensign, came through with the impact of his declaration of sinking a Japanese submarine..."total silence on the screen"...only imprinted, what may be their lethal/fate along the way...Max Steiner's stiring music/score only adds to the heroic theme, as always...this is a well made Warner Bros' movie and a truly favorite of mine...in summation, I'm so glad we WON WW2...under the cruel sea our steadfast sailors of the US Navy's Silent Service sacrificed to preserve our heritage and the American way of life... 52 US Navy submarines were lost resulting in watery graves for 3,500 officers and enlisted men that marked the way back to Tokyo...God bless 'em all...SGGT CHRIS SARNO-USMC FMF

5 out of 5 stars Superb War Film.......2007-01-21

I bought the DVD of "Operation Pacific" over a year ago, but have only just watched it. I thought it would be just an average war film which I could watch when I had nothing better to see. However, I was quite wrong. This is definitely one of the best films of any kind that I have seen in the last couple of years. Why, I wonder, has it been forgotten (I had never heard of it until I saw it advertised on Amazon)? It is convincingly realistic, both when the submarine and its crew are at sea, and when they are having a break in port. I found some parts of the film very moving, there is no "false heroism" or cheapness about any of it, and the action when it comes is extremely exiting. Why, I wonder, do people sneer at John Wayne, or at his supposed lack of acting talent? In this film he is superb. I have seen quite a lot of his films in recent years, and I think that this may be one of his very best. The same applies, I think to Ward Bond, who is also superb in this.
Just a note: to anyone who watches this, and likes it as much as I do, make sure you also watch "They Were Expendable", also set in the Pacific in WWII, and also absolutely first rate.

4 out of 5 stars One of John Wayne's Best Performances.......2006-10-26

This post-war made film (1951) about WWII is rather retrospective and honest in its telling of the tale. Wayne is very good here in an uncomplicated role. Mixing, submarines, lurking enemy, and old flings or ex-flings with a lot of macho dialogue (without preaching) along the way, this film does not fail to entertain. George Waggner's direction give a lot of freedom to get his story across.

Many millions adore it, many others probably wish it was illegal, but there's no denying the magnetic pull of American Idol on television viewers. Maybe it's that we can't avert our eyes from the train wreck that comprises about 90% of the contestants, or that we appreciate the heart and soul of the ones who are genuinely talented; or maybe we just love to hate house villain Simon Cowell and his caustic put-downs. Good, bad, or whatever, American Idol really is the phenomenon it claims to be. And with some ten hours of material spread out over three discs--there's so much stuff here that even the bonus features have bonus features--this overview of the first four seasons will surely satisfy even the most ardent fans.

Disc One, The Best Of, takes us from the first step in the process (the cattle-call try-outs so popular they need stadiums to accommodate all the hopefuls) through the initial auditions and interviews with judges Cowell, Randy Jackson, and Paula Abdul to the performances seen on the telecasts themselves--including those by eventual winners Kelly Clarkson, Ruben Studdard, Fantasia Barrino, and Carrie Underwood, as well as runners-up Bo Bice and Clay Aiken, among others. In other words, nothing unexpected. Indeed, for many viewers, Disc Two (The Worst Of) will likely be the favorite. For it is here that the set focuses on our fascination with the profoundly clueless, those utterly untalented folks who make us squirm with their outlandish self-delusion and willingness, nay eagerness, to humiliate themselves on TV (epitomized by William "She Bangs" Hung, the so-bad-he's-good sideshow that's depressing on so many levels), only to then find themselves genuinely astonished and angry when they fail to make the cut. Finally, Disc Three includes an interview with Abdul, "homecoming" footage featuring Underwood and Bice, and additional interviews from the fourth season.

If American Idol has a dirty little secret (aside from Abdul's personal life), it's that the show hasn't produced a single artist with not just a good voice but an original one--a Norah Jones, an Alicia Keys, a John Mayer, someone can play and write as well as sing. But then, that's not what the show is about; we're frequently reminded that this is "a singing competition," pure and simple. Which brings us to what may well be this exhaustive (and perhaps exhausting, too) set's defining moment: When a particularly awful "singer" begs to do another tune, Cowell says, "There's only so much punishment a human being can take." Replies the contestant: "No, I can take a lot more." --Sam Graham

3 out of 5 stars Not the best of American Idol!.......2007-02-18

Well, I've been a HUGE fan of American Idol ever since the beggining. When I heard that they were releasing a 3 disc DVD, I was ecstatic. I thought that I would finally be able to get all those classic performances on DVD, but when I got this, I have to say that I was very dissapointed. Now, this does have SOME of those really great performances. like "Respect" by Kelly Clarkson, "Summertime" by Fantasia, and "Alone" by Carrie Underwood, among a few others, but there are definitley quite a few missing. For example, where is Jasmine Trias' performance of "Inseperable"? and they put Diana DeGarmo's performance of "Enough is Enough" but did not put her signature song "Don't Cry Out Loud", what gives? they also miss a bunch of other great performances, like "Somewhere Over The Rainbow" by Kimberley Locke, "Circle of Life" by Jennifer Hudson" and "This is the Night" by Clay Aiken. While I'll admit that this is a must have for an American Idol fan, I just hope that if they come out with another box set, they will re-think it and REALLY put the best of American Idol.

If you are a true fan of American Idol, this is an excellent DVD collection to have . It has auditions from the winners of seasons 1-4, the resluts to the finale- which I've been looking for and performances. Also the worst , which is really fun to watch, and a bonus disc with interviews from Bo Bice and Carrie Underwood. I really enjoyed watching this DVD .

5 out of 5 stars Good Feelings!.......2006-08-25

It was lovely to finally have a music DVD that presented great performances, the smooth transition from one great sound to the next sound was seamless. This was one of the best DVD that I have purchased in a long time. This was so good that it was a shame that it is only 55 minutes in length, I would have gladly spent hours with this release. More music DVDs need to be made like this and in so doing it would stop that disappointed feeling that far to many music DVDs leave you with. It is like some meals the presentation is great but after the meal you still have an appetite for more and this DVD did that for me it left me wanting more!

Very Pleased!

5 out of 5 stars Excellent.......2006-05-05

I caught a few episodes of "Legends of Jazz" before buying this, so I knew I would like it. Some of this has not been shown yet by PBS in my area, so I didn't know if the ones I hadn't caught yet were going to be as good as the earlier ones. Well, it turns out that the remainder of them lived up to my expectations. I really like the Kurt Elling and Al Jarreau version of the classic "Take Five" and the Robert Cray and Keb Mo collaboration on "The 12 Year Old Boy". The only thing I'm disappointed about is that there is no Roy Hargrove on here. Hargrove is my favorite living trumpet player and I really enjoyed his playing on the first episode. Oh well, you can't win 'em all.

5 out of 5 stars Get this if you missed the PBS series.......2006-04-27

I found out about this 2-disk set while watching the "Male Vocalists" episode of the new PBS television series "Legends of Jazz," and after buying it, I find I am really looking forward to seeing all the rest of the actual half-hour TV shows from which these 13 tracks and clips are taken. As for this set, let me say first that the audio and video quality are simply outstanding, among the best I have ever heard, in fact, (which is not surprising considering that the TV series is shot in HDTV and features really outstanding Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround sound.) Next, as for the performances themselves, they really shine and there is something here for everyone - the set covers everything from latin jazz to be-bop, Brazilian jazz, fusion-type jazz, vocal jazz, and even throws in a bit of the blues, with a great duet by Robert Cray and Keb' Mo'. A really nice mix of artists, older and younger, and a pretty good value for money, considering that you get both a CD and a DVD packaged together in the box. I highly recommend this!

5 out of 5 stars Legends of Jazz - Excellent/A Classic/A Must Have.......2006-04-26

This is a fantastic collection of live performances on both DC and DVD! From the Al Jarreau/Kurt Elling vocal duet version of Brubeck's "Take Five" to David Sanborn and Phil Woods blowing down the house on the classic "Senor Blues", there is not a single bad track in this package. I also loved the solo performances - Chick Corea's mind-blowing display of technique on "Armando's Rhumba" is a particular standout, as is Benny Golson's "Killer Joe" (the track Spielberg used in the Tom Hanks film, "The Terminal".) This would be a good deal just for the audio CD, but the included video versions of the performances on the accompanying DVD are a welcome extra - they're shot beautifully and the Dolby 5.1 Surround really makes you feel as if you are there at the TV taping... For me, though, the best part is that the artist combinations are really well thought-out, and give you the chance to hear some incredible jazz musicians performing together whom you would ordinarily never see on the same stage.

3 out of 5 stars Disappointing.......2007-07-13

I bought this awhile ago but only watched a little bit. Tonight I watched it in full and have to say that the worst thing about it is that it was so poorly produced. The sound doesn't track to the video properly in much of the DVD. The sound levels are also all over the place in the audition parts. A big fat ZERO to whomever was the sound editor of this DVD and the producer who didn't catch the problem before it was released.

This video has one really big redeeming quality that makes it an absolute must for American Idol fans - the entire performance of Bo Bice singing In A Dream a cappella. It was probably one of the most BRILLIANT moments the show will ever have and this is the only place to get it! Fortunately, this song does track properly. I do agree with other reviewers that there were some really stand out moments that were left out. Seriously, with the money this show has made they could afford to put together a well produced DVD for each season separately and not leave out many of the best bits.

5 out of 5 stars Great DVD.......2007-06-16

This DVD shows the performances and auditions from the top two of each season of American Idol (up through season 4). It's great for people who have just started to watch the show with season 5 and 6 to take a look back and see some highlights of what they have missed from previous seasons. Hoping there will be some highlights from seasons 5 and 6 on DVD soon.

2 out of 5 stars A painfull try for "The Best of AI Seasons 1-4 DVD" .......2006-11-10

I'm a big fan of American Idol. I watch only the US American Idol( we also have a local AI "Ídolos" and Latin America Idols - which are a frustated try to make a similar show) and I confess that I was REALLY DISAPPOINTED with the DVD...
I guess that whoever picked the performances as "The Best of AI-Seasons 1-4" got carried away about the actual level of expertise of the performers and forgot that most of the show's audience are more concerned about HAVING FUN instead of watching to MASTER PERFORMANCES THAT MAKE YOU FEEL LIKE SKIPPING TO THE NEXT ONE, OVER AND OVER...
I expected to see more of the classic performances that, let's say, "the lay people" love.
I thought that I'd see Bo Bice singing "Sweet Home Alabama" or Carrie Underwood singing anything the major audiences actually have heard before.
The extra-sceenes which show some images of some of the show's final contestants passing the test to be in American Idol 4 is not bad... but... seriously... I guess that nobody bought the DVD to see the extras...!!

Sorry, amigos, but I'm actually thinking about selling the DVD I bought to a cd & dvd 2nd hand store.

5 out of 5 stars American Idol - The Best of Seasons 1 - 4.......2006-04-07

A great way to refresh your memory of the great performances. You get to the see the process behind the scenes. Very informative with interviews and more. And most of all... fun!

The main draw (and quick draw) of this 1956 Western is the marvelous presence of Robert Ryan in the lead role. This underappreciated actor plays a Kansas marshal with a history of perceived cowardice in his past. Everything comes to a head in a single week: a cattle drive ends in town, bringing shootin' and hollerin'; Ryan's nemesis, a casino-runner played by veteran bad guy Robert Middleton, arrives to soak the suckers; and young hotshot Jeffrey Hunter, whose father was killed by Ryan, arrives with revenge on his mind. Oh, and Ryan himself begins to suffer from blinding headaches. Despite the crowded plot, the results are Fifties Western boilerplate, with few distinguishing features beyond the cast. But the supporting ranks are crowded with essential horse-saga actors: Walter Brennan, Arthur O'Connell, Rodolfo Acosta, and of course the bearded, lizard-eyed Middleton. Virginia Mayo plays Ryan's hotel-keeper ladyfriend. Ace cinematographer Lucien Ballard gets a few good outdoor CinemaScope set-ups into the generally backlot feel of the thing. But the reason to see the film is lanky Robert Ryan, whose compelling mix of neurosis, gentleness, and fury is on full display here. --Robert Horton

Description

When a flood of lawless gunmen invades his once peaceful town, Marshal Cass Silver (Ryan) knows it?s up to him to force them out. But the only chance he might have is to gain the help of a gunslinger named Thad (Hunter), who wrongly believes the Marshal is responsible for his father?s death. To save the town, Silver will have to earn the aid, and trust, of a man sworn to send him to his grave!

3 out of 5 stars Building blocks stolen from HIGH NOON.......2007-08-30

The pieces of this story clunk into place with all the finesse of concrete building blocks. And some of those blocks wear the HIGH NOON brand. Except that Robert Ryan is no Gary Cooper and Virginia Mayo is no Grace Kelly. Altho, Jeff Hunter just about matches Lloyd Bridges thanks in large part to a larger, more sympathetic role. By the end of the film, the parallels to the older film were too blatant to ignore or deny.

The only reason I watched this one again, anyway, was for the music -- the haunting theme song by Lionel Newman, whistled against a guitar riff.

There are other virtues, however. Director Robert Webb and cinematographer Lucien Ballard and crew made this Western look fresh (don't base your impression on the cover art to this DVD which seems to come from another source). In a supporting role, the normally distracting Walter Brennan gives a good, restrained performance. And for those of us who remember that era, there are soooo many familiar faces (eg, Robert Middleton, Rodolfo Acosta, Arthur O'Connell, Whit Bissell, Ed Platt, Richard Deacon and, fleetingly, Jackie Coogan).

If I can get a hold of the theme song for my CD player, I'll probably never visit this film again.

4 out of 5 stars Fine western for its era.......2007-08-01

Other reviewers have rightfully noted the excellent performance of Robert Ryan in this picture. Jeffrey Hunter is less impressive, which is a shame, since his role in The Searchers was proof that he was capable of good acting.

This movie features some fairly good action for its day, including what might be the earliest example of a bullet hole appearing in a bad guy's head (actually, his hat). By the 60s, this had become a commonplace, but here it is another example of how film-makers were scrounging around for inventive ways to film gunfighting.

Look also for the Ryan's character's criticism of the profit-motive on the part of the townspeople, actually calling them thieves (They were raising their prices to take advantage of the recently paid cowpokes.). This is particularly interesting, given Ryan's real-life liberal political opinions.

This movie is a keeper for our household.

4 out of 5 stars Hope Gonzales.......2007-02-15

My husband had been looking for this movie for over 10 years, we looked for it everywhere that videos are sold. We finally found it on Amazon.Com
I could not imagine why he would want to see this old movie, but after watching the move with him, I can honestly tell you that it is one of the best westerns I have seen. I am so excited that I was able to find it and it was a joy to watch. I sincerely recommend it for anyone that likes westerns young and old.

4 out of 5 stars A solid Western.......2006-11-06

Robert Middleton was a big brutish character actor... We have seen him in "The Silver Chalice" opposite Paul Newman, in "Friendly Persuasion" opposite Gary Cooper, and in "Love Me Tender" with Elvis Presley...

In "The Proud Ones", he is at his best as the smooth-faced and smooth-spoken saloon owner who tries to have the lawman relieved of his job in order for the town to be wide open for wild business...

Middleton makes a considerable impression as Honest John Barrett, distinctive in his dishonesty and insincere manners... He is a thief ready for anything in order to control his lucrative interests, hiring cheap crooks like George Mathews (Dillon) who results a fraud according to his rules... We see him hiring dangerous gunmen willing to slay at any time like Chico (Rodolfo Acosta), who swears to the Marshal that he will kill him one day...

The film arouses profound suspicion that we are pushed to ask ourselves why a suspicious man like the Marshal had to shoot someone apparently unarmed from behind and can we justify his action?! ¿Is he, by any chance, a 'trigger-happy' murderer?

Jeffrey Hunter performs the mistaken cowboy involved in a sinful act to avenge his father's death with the wrong man... He never believes the rectitude of the Marshal who has a questionable past... Hunter accuses him of killing his father... 'It was either him or me', exclaims Ryan, 'but I never shot an unarmed man in my life.'

The climax of the film proves clearly and openly the whole truth to the tormented young man when he confronts Barrett in a showdown... The film wakes up our attention in its development when we discover that the proud Marshall is losing the power of seeing, a serious problem considered suicidal for a lawman who has powerful enemies...

With the lovely Virginia Mayo, the good jailer Brennan and the timid O'Connell, "The Proud Ones" is a solid Western, which remembers me a similar one, "The Lonely Man" with Jack Palance and Anthony Perkins...

4 out of 5 stars pretty good except a bit too staging.......2006-09-15

the costumes were a bit too new and too fancy, the paint on the settings looked too new and too clean. a typical western storyline appeared maybe thousand times already but a pretty good one. the indoor lightings for all the scenes were too bright, strong and lack of depth, like watching a play on a stage. but still, a very good one.

Pierce Brosnan stars in a new movie version of the classic adventure tale Robinson Crusoe. After killing a friend in a duel, Crusoe flees his native Scotland and takes to the high seas. A storm casts him ashore on an island in the Indian Ocean, where he builds himself a home out of bamboo and goes a little crazy from solitude--until he finds a footprint in the sand that isn't his. The relationship between Crusoe and Friday, a native from a neighboring island, gets a more contemporary (less colonial) interpretation than in the original story; the result is quite enjoyable. Brosnan is particularly good at depicting Crusoe's borderline madness from isolation, and William Takaku gives Friday both dignity and intelligence. The cinematography of the island is gorgeous. --Bret Fetzer

Description

Dynamic screen star Pierce Brosnan (THE TAILOR OF PANAMA, THE WORLD IS NOT ENOUGH) braves the perils of an untamed land in this classic story of sweeping action and high adventure! In a thrilling adaptation of the timeless novel by Daniel Defoe, both men -- each stranded and unable to return home -- must cross an immense cultural divide to forge a friendship and survive against impossible odds!

The slavery aspect was offputting, but the pleasure of the other natives at hearing Friday's story raised my rating.

1 out of 5 stars Stranded: Flat and Insipid Re-Telling of Classic Novel.......2005-12-18

This `Robinson Crusoe' film stars handsome Pierce Brosnan, but though it was shot in 1994, it remained on the shelf for more than three years before finally released straight-to-video in America The film is distributed by Miramax, one of the powerful studios in Hollywood, but few people have heard about it. And TWO directors were attached to the project - Rodney K. Hardy and George Miller, the latter being the one who directed `Never Ending Story 2,' no, not the Australian director who did `Mad Max.'

The film's history suggests something very awful. The fact is, `Robinson Crusoe' is not as awful as you might think it is, but it is still awful all the same. Not that it is boring. It has lots of actions - a Scotsman dueling his best friend, a shipwreck, meeting with a native, fighting against the tribesmen, etc. -- but the storytelling of the entire film is so flat that the film looks as if being cut, edited, and put together by computer software. Crusoe's adventures are all on autopilot, allowing very few moments to make us care the hero and his friend Friday.

The back cover of my VHS of the film reads `SWEEPING ACTION AND HIGH ADVENTURE!' `BARABARIC SACRIFICAL RITUALS!' `SAVE A DOOMED TRIBESMAN FROM CERTAIN DEATH!' `SURVIVE AGAINST IMPOSSIBLE ODDS!' And look at these phrases with exclamation marks added to each of them. Yes, all of them surely happen in the film, but none of them is as thrilling as these four exclamation marks suggest. Even a dog appears to share the adventures with Crusoe, but the subplot about poor pooch ends up with a very misguided (and poorly done) conclusion which will leave you speechless.

Brosnan is a decent actor, and he is OK here (though his Scottish accent comes and goes), but more impressive is William Takaku as Friday. The supporting actors are Polly Walker (about 5 minutes), James Frain (about 1 minute), and Ian Hart (about 1 minute). Sean Brosnan, son of the star, briefly appears as cabin boy.

So, after all, what can you expect from a filmed version of `Robinson Crusoe'? You think you know the story, and probably have read the original book of Daniel Dafoe when you are a child. Whatever your memory might be, the film must have adventures, and lots of them. This film attempts to show as many as it can, but none of them is exciting as it should be.

1 out of 5 stars Robinson Crusoe the movie, don't see it!!! .......2005-01-14

I am a big fan of Robinson Crusoe, but then these stupid movie people have to go and screw it up!!!! I mean dang, he was supposed to be on the island for 28 years but they changed it all up so that he is only there for 6!!!!!?? Whoever reads this, DO NOT SEE IT IT IS A WASTE OF MONEY!!! Also they did not include him living in a cave and having a home in the country and a farm in the Brazils. They did not show how he was able to plant stuff or how he go the goats and sheep that he survied on. Friday was also a ripoff, in the book he was more tanned than African American. And if you notice in the movie he had a toucan but in the book he had a parrot that he taught to speak to him. And more about Friday, he had converted his religion to Christianity but he kept his religion. Now all i have to say is that if Amazon had -5stars i would pick that.

Way too funny. This was truly the BEST OF THE WORST. You will laugh so hard till your sides hurt.

2 out of 5 stars Disappointing.......2006-12-21

This DVD did not show the worst of the seasons and I was very disappointed that they didn't show the best of the worst.

1 out of 5 stars What a waste of money.......2006-02-24

I placed this item on my wish list because I figured it would be hilarious. My boyfriend and I are avid "Idol" watchers and we were looking forward to seeing all of our favorite "worst" auditions. Unfortunately, this DVD shows only a select group of the "standouts" from previous seasons. The editing is absolutely abysmal. It looks like some half-hearted compilation hastily and cheaply spliced together with some comments by Paula. Poor, POOR quality, to put it mildly. The only thing worse than the editing is the sound quality. Not worth what I paid for it by a long shot. I wish I could return it and get my money back.

1 out of 5 stars Very Disappointing!! .......2006-02-02

I was so very excited when I saw this dvd was coming out! Screw the BEST of American Idol--I was definitely more interested in the WORST! The terrible auditions are what make American Idol worth watching in the first place!! Unfortunately all we get are heavily edited segments where the singing has been cut out! I have to agree, it seems the producers didnt get the rights to the songs so all we get are the same judge reactions without the guilty pleasure of hearing the contestants sing! I was really angry and upset by this. Some of the most memorable personalities from the auditions have been reduced to nothing more than Simon, Randy, and Paula's critiques. Cmon American Idol! Next time dont fool us into thinking this DVD is going to be something more than it is. Next time I'll stick to my Tivo and enjoy seeing and hearing the real deal on tv!

5 out of 5 stars Dark comedy, a little quirky, but a lot of fun!.......2007-01-08

My spouse and I both enjoyed this movie--so much so that we have driven through southern new mexico and the quiet little town of Hillsboro! Admittedly, not everyone will enjoy this movie, but it is one of my all time favorites that I still watch a couple of times every year!!!! Rose McGown is great!

3 out of 5 stars "You gotta swear you won't kill nobody with these guns.".......2003-10-02

Lots of indiscriminant murder and Rose McGowan behind the wheel of a pink 58' Olds with a cigar perched between her trademark red lips...what more could you ask for? You know, I love that girl but somebody finally figured out the real key to her intoxicatingly wicked charm is to keep her silent throughout the entire film. Just the hottest little demon from Hell homewrecker since Joan Crawford!(Spoiler alert) She has one line in the movie and it's worth waiting for, or maybe you'll just want to fast forward to the last scene to hear it for yourself. Her facial expressions and hand gestures are a lot more effective than the dialogue here anyway which is just downright stupid. I wish there was another word that better describes the pure dumbassity of this movie but there just ain't one.

Salvator Xuereb was pretty cool as your "here we go again" dissasociated psychopath that broke out of prison with some computer nerd to go on a treasure hunt for gold. They even managed to weave in a tatooed dog, a hit man and a poisonous snake...OOOOOOHHHHHHH! Has it's moments, particularly when the tourists from NY stop to photograph one of our treasure hunters. That one had me rolling on the floor. If you like road movies you can probably somehow find the patience to sit through this one too. Made me hungry for "Love and a 45." 3 Fangs

5 out of 5 stars She's bad, but she's NOT bad.......2001-09-08

Did you like The Doom Generation? So did I, actually, I like it a bit more than a healthy person probably should. Rose was in that movie constantly, and she was, to put it kindly, quite vocal. I enjoyed this. So I couldn't imagine wanting to watch a movie in which she plays a "mute" - why watch a movie without that incredible voice? You know what's even better about Rose McGowan than her voice (hey, get your mind out of the gutter)? Her eyes. Guess how someone who is mute expresses themselves... with their eyes! Wow! The way she uses those eyes to reduce people to insect-status is incredible (guy... "Can you hear?" Rose's eyes... "You are an idiot" you... "whoa, those are great eyes"). So what can I say? Love Rose McGowan's eyes, love this movie. Don't love Rose McGowan's eyes, well, I can't comprehend such a thing, so I can't comment in that case.

1 out of 5 stars Incredibly inept writing, acting and direction........2000-08-15

An annoying trio of characters, an I'm-so-hip tone, atrocious writing and shooting, and a relentlessly smutty tone...this one, for me, didn't even quality as "bad is good". Not even worth the rental price.

3 out of 5 stars Strange and fascinating.......2000-08-11

This movie is really cool. It is a cheesy, short movie but it is funny. Rose McGowan plays a mute girl perfectly and seductively throughout the movie. The ending makes the movie come together. It says that you get what you deserve.

This is a great film. Ashley Judd's finest performance. Why can't I buy it on DVD?

4 out of 5 stars A woman running away from a difficult and limited life .......2007-01-05

RUBY IN PARADISE, a very difficult movie to find,( not yet
on DVD) , consists of a small story, that is comparable to
Judd's other movie "Where the Heart Is", in the sense that
we see a young person, in this case, a woman running away
from a difficult and limited life in rural America,
perhaps Tennessee, dreaming to get out of the future that
everyone expects her to have, and live, in a preordained
fashion. In that sense, the picture underlines the desire
for youth to often try to break free, and aspire to
something greater than what they have right now, and to
search and carve out a higher personal meaning and
message, from Life.

The story, written from a male author, apparently,
imagining what goes on in a young woman's mind in such a
situation, is acceptably written, if not, a bit slow,
stereotypical and one-dimensional. However, those
downsides are made up for by the realistic qualities shown
in the movie, by the actors, such as Judd, Bentley
Mitchum, Dorothy Lyman, for example, many who play their roles
with enormous credibility and sincerity.

This movie also recalls similar pieces, made from the
1980's, such as Nastassja Kinski's PARIS TEXAS, showing a
man searching for the mother of his child, and longing for
a personal meaning in his life.

Obviously, the story's one-dimensional quality limits
perhaps what could normally be demonstrated by the actors,
however, the intention of the writer, and of the story, is
proably th extent to which many people are intropsective,
and live happy lives even with the moderate financial and
human support they can rely on, that others might see as
insufficient, lacking or unsatisfactory.

Coming soon to a casino lounge, wedding, or bar mitzvah near you: it's the contestants of American Idol. This 90-minute highlights recap extends the proverbial 15 minutes of fame for the hopefuls who galvanized the nation as they contended for a recording contract. This talent show--part Star Search, part The Gong Show, part A Chorus Line--was an instant pop-culture phenomenon, but the breakout star of this series was arguably not winner Kelly Clarkson, she of the powerhouse voice, or even runner-up Jason Guarini, he of the Sideshow Bob hair. One of the judges, record producer Simon "Prince of Darkness" Cowell, emerged as the show's villain who audiences loved to hate. (A bonus segment on this DVD, "When Judges Attack," replays Simon's nastiest feuds with disgruntled contestants and fellow judges Paula Abdul and Randy Jackson.) Relive the agony (staged comedy bits and bloopers with series hosts Ryan Seacrest and Brian Dunkleman, who, if nothing else, gave Saturday Night Live's Jimmy Fallon a prime target for parody), the triumphant solo performances, the cheesy ensemble numbers that went out with Up with People, and the onstage drama over who America would next vote offstage (the Tamyra Gray contingent is no doubt still in shock). On the DVD, a wealth of behind-the-scenes footage documenting each stage of the contest process should satisfy Idol-philes. --Donald Liebenson

The First Season of American Idol was an amazing season. Far better then any of the other seasons since, but this DVD does not offer enough it is a nice recap of the show but not a good enough look back. I wish they had done it more like the "Pop Idol: A Star Is Born" DVD in which they go through the whole season quickly but show 4 or 5 of the performances from each week until the Final 5 when all of their final performances are shown. The DVD would be much better had it followed that format. The DVD is still fun to watch but could be better. I wish there were more Nikki McKibbin performance's

5 out of 5 stars I love what American Idol has done for singing!.......2005-08-10

As a professional singer and Voice Teacher, I am so thrilled to see how American Idol has given the art of singing such a jump start in these last few years.

These American Idol programs are filled with so much varying talents. From Hard rock to Country, America is becoming interested in identifying true talent. As an Opera Singer myself I can still enjoy the gifts of other genres and am sad to hear when others look down upon the show. Also, as a voice teacher of many styles I can't stress enough the need to my own students for them to develop themselves as a "Complete Unique Package". Finding their own true niche and style
