The manicured lawns and overstuffed garbage cans of suburbia become a buffet for woodland creatures in Over the Hedge. A self-centered raccoon named RJ (voiced by Bruce Willis, Die Hard) steals and accidentally destroys the hoard of an angry bear (Nick Nolte, 48 Hours), who gives the raccoon a week to replace it. RJ despairs--until he meets an odd gang of foragers, ranging from a turtle named Verne (Garry Shandling, The Larry Sanders Show), a father/daughter duo of opossums (the bizarre pairing of William Shatner and pop singer Avril Lavigne), a family of porcupines (with A Mighty Wind's Eugene Levy and Catherine O'Hara as the parents), and a hyperactive squirrel named Hammy (Steve Carell, The 40 Year Old Virgin). By convincing these friendly beasts that the suburban homesteads on the other side of a recently erected hedge are a mother-lode of cast-off food, RJ hopes to dupe them into doing his gathering. But when the suburban residents realize they've been invaded by woodland pests, an exterminator is called to take care of the problem. The overarching storyline of Over the Hedge is pure formula--your basic "family matters more than anything" lesson--but moment to moment, the movie is delightfully crisp and clever. The animation is topnotch, the acting is excellent (other voices include those of Allison Janney, The West Wing, and Thomas Haden Church, Sideways), and the satirical jabs at consumerism are actually funny. An above-average animated movie. --Bret Fetzer

Not Like the Comic Strip.......2007-09-08
Verne and R.J. are two layabout losers unliked by the rest of the animals. At least they were until this movie came out. Verne (the turtle) has been transformed into the clan leader and voice of reason. It is through his diligence that the local animals survive their winters. This spring the animals awaken to find most of their forest is gone and has been replaced by suburbia. R.J. (the racoon) meets up with them while trying to save his own hide from a hungry bear.
R.J. tries to corrupt the animals into helping him gather food from the humans. Verne is always the detractor trying to keep the status quo and remain safe. Many adventures ensue and R.J.'s character comes to light. Eventually the various situations are resolved in comic fashion and things work out.
This is a fun story with some excellent voice characterizations but it is not the comic strip. Some aspects of the strip do come through quite nicely. All in all it is a fun romp of a movie with just the right mix of comedy, drama, silliness, and character development. The story is very well thought out and it works. There is also a short feature included on the disk starring the squirrel and a boomerang. Check it out.

George, Dave, Ray, and Rodney. Not a singing group, but four real-life individuals dedicated to controlling the entities that don't take kindly to their efforts. George Mendonca is a topiary gardener who spends his time taming tendrils of plant life into animal shapes. Why? Because he can, and apparently it's no easy job. One slip of the clipper and a green and leafy body part can go bye-bye for years. Dave Hoover takes on big cats under the big top. An admirer of the famous lion tamer, Clyde Beatty, Dave comes out of the lion ring covered with sweat. Not from working hard, but from hand-trembling fear. Ray Mendez, a mole-rat expert, waxes eloquently about the social structure of these sightless, hairless natural wonders who wear their teeth on the outside of their lips. But if you want to see a real wacko at work, watch Rodney Brooks, a robotics expert who is convinced our extinction will be the first step in a takeover of tin men.
In Fast, Cheap & Out of Control, documentarian Errol Morris proves that the weird and obscure are just as interesting as the rich and famous. Morris tries to add depth to his subjects with his out-of-control editing technique, which after a while becomes an annoying distraction; these guys are fascinating enough all by themselves. The blare of the background music is also a bit much. Despite these shortcomings, though, if you like taking a voyeuristic peek into other people's lives, Fast, Cheap & Out of Control gives you plenty to look at. --Luanne Brown
Customer Reviews:
people, animals and robots.......2007-09-02
An entertaining documentary by Errol Morris about four people - a wild animal trainer, a topiary gardener, a mole rat expert, and a roboticist from the MIT Artificial Intelligence lab. While they appear to be different at first, the documentary shows how similar they ultimately are. They are all passionate about animals or animal-like objects, for one. The wild animal trainer and the mole rat expert obviously work with animals. The gardener creates animal sculptures. Rodney Brooks, the roboticist, builds robots that are modeled after animals and animal behavior. Mr. Brooks explains that seemingly intelligent behavior in robots is really just an illusion that emerges from the accumulation of simple, unintelligent actions of the different robotic components. Mr. Morris cleverly puts across the idea that this explanation also applies to animals and people by mixing up the narration with the visuals. While Mr. Brooks is explaining how robots behave, what we see on screen are wild animals, or while the mole rat expert is telling us how noisy mole rats are in their tunnels, what we see on screen is a noisy circus crowd. What Mr. Morris is quietly suggesting is that robots, animals, and people are built in the same way - from simple parts that when integrated in enough numbers come out appearing intelligent and complex. It is an interesting idea.
the title says it all............2007-06-14
I remember well watching this documentary, when it was first released on VHS. The name of the film, alone, caught my attention. I knew little about the director, Errol Morris, other than that he is a very well-respected documentarian. What's more, the idea of blending the worlds of four distinctive men together into a juxtaposition of stream-of-consciousness imagery, interwoven with interview clips sounded fascinating!
Man, how do I begin to break down the "plot" for you? This film follows four distinctive people with four very distinctive professions (a robot scientist, who, incidentally wrote a paper entitled "Fast, Cheap and Out of Control: A Robot Invasion of the Solar System," a naked mole rat scientist, topiary gardener and lion tamer). I must say, the way this story is told, through a trippy combination of black and white and grainy color film, made it more than a little surreal. Also, the professions we get further insight into are more than slightly macabre (particularly, the naked mole rat scientist). While some might call this film something of a "geeky tribute," I would call it more of a conceptual performance art piece--with one-of-a-kind subjects.
The mark we leave on the world........2006-03-09
In the guise of a movie about four eccentrics with strange jobs, Errol Morris has made a very moving picture about the mark we leave on the world. Each of these four people have four very will have different legacies. It's about why we do what we do, how we came to be doing it and who -- if anyone -- will do it after us? Of course, Morris, by making the movie, is leaving a permanent record, not only of himself, but of these four.
Inspired.......2006-02-07
Fast, Cheap & Out of Control is a thoughtfully composed look at the work of four men and how their lives are poured into what they do. In the begining, the audience would be hard pressed to imagine how these men and what they do could have anything to do with one another. We start seeing the passion that directs them and the discipline that maintains them. Each man begins speaking, in specific terms, about his interests and how those interests relate to what he does professionally.
It didn't take long before the editing delicately overlapped imagery and narration. As this happened, the connections between seemingly unrelated words and images surfaced and began dominating my experience of this film. As the men examined their own respective roles in society, much of what they say of themselves can be said of us all. Their stories become one. The big story is the story of life on Earth right now.
I would also like to make special mention of the soundtrack. The music really straddles the line between playful and haunting. It seems to drive the film in a lot of ways and perfectly frames the subjects and their work.
The men that are the subject of this doccumentary are endearing characters that aren't selling us anything. They only want to share with us some aspect of the world that has captured them. I saw this film in the theater and was unprepared; I was moved. This piece is not for everyone. Maybe I'm just easily inspired, maybe this is solid gold. If I'm easily inspired then good for me, if this is solid gold then you really ought to watch it.
One of the best documentaries ever.......2005-12-31
This would make a perfect companion doc to Grizzly Man, as every one of these men have a similar control/unintentional subject relationship to their particular obsessions - especially with the lion tamer who never forgets what he's dealing with and serves as an interesting contrast to the protagonist of Grizzly Man who allowed his delusions about his relationship to the bears to kill him.
The quirkiness of the subjects serves the director who loves to jump cut between them drawing parallels between lion taming, hedging trimming, robotics and mole rat study with surprising ease. All four men are experts on some of the strangest fields imaginable and all four exhibit some degree of control but at the end of the day, their obsessions control them and that's the way they want it.
This is an excellent movie for anyone obsessed with nature documentaries, but it's also a great movie for everyone (especially those that find the average nature doc rather tame and stage managed - i always hated those nature docs by Disney where the deer always gets away from the wolf)

Forget control...she should be out of her bathing suit..........2006-12-12
She's Out of Control is a great piece of '80s nostalgia. Not only do we have Ami Dolenz, an '80s heartthrob, but also Tony Danza at the peak of his popularity. Danza does get a little wacky in the movie, but that's part of its charm. There are a lot of funny scenes in this movie including the scenes with that mastermind Dr. Fishbinder. See it at least for the hot Ami Dolenz on the beach. Put it on your list if you're an '80s freak.
Great fun chick movie.......2006-07-06
I love this movie. I recorded it on VHS about 11 years ago and I am so happy to see it on DVD.
A REAL FUN, FUNNY FILM!!! ALL TEENS SHOULD SEE!!.......2006-05-15
I don't have one bad word against 'She's Out of Control'. I first hired this film because I like actress Ami dolenz a lot. She's a very good actress. Ami and Tony Danza were really funny in this. Actually, all the actors were pretty good.
I recommend this film to anyone that enjoys a fun film. It has it's own charm about it, plus all dads should watch this film. A dad's worse nightmare of his nerdyish daughter getting a make over and suddenly become a babe. Lots of wanna be dates...a must watch.
The scene on the beach when Ami does a some what bay watch like run to her dad's horror is classic!!!
Check it out, it's all fun!!!!!
Come on...........2006-05-08
How can anyone not at least "like" this movie? It is "out of control", but in a fun way - and it is far from "creepy" (as one reviewer put it) but instead "campy". By no means is this Shakespeare nor meant to be such, but simply intended to be the light, laughable and (depending upon one's own perception) maybe even thought provoking pic that it has become over the past several years. Thanks for giving us a lighthearted comedy to think and smile about!
nice movie.......2006-04-16
I gotta admit it,I Couldn't find This Movie on LASER DISC,But I bought the dvd,'tis one Of my Favorite 80s movies,Tony Danza did a great role playin' the father of growing Up Daughter.

Out of Control: AIDS In Black America is the first national network television documentary to examine how and why AIDS has become overwhelmingly a Black epidemic -- not in Africa or the Third World, but right here in the United States. The program brings this shocking situation to public attention, to reveal the deeply rooted issues of failure of leadership, racism, homophobia, and sexual behavior which have contributed to the ever-worsening Black epidemic in the US. Blacks make up 13% of the total US population, but account for over 50% of all new cases of HIV infection. That infection rate is eight times the rate of whites. Among women, the statistics are even more shocking: 70% of all new HIV infections are Black women, and a black woman is 23 times more likely than her white counterpart to be diagnosed with AIDS. AIDS is the leading cause of death for Black women ages 25-49, and has been for the last 11 years. In interviews with AIDS activists, doctors, public health officials, and Black leaders, as well as segments shot deep inside urban and rural Black communities across the country, Out of Control revealed, for the first time, the political and social reasons AIDS spiraled into a crisis in Black communities across the country.

Enjoyable but slightly uneven.......2007-08-18
A good tale, excellent animation, but a bit uneven in the humor at times. Overall I enjoyed it.
Great great movie!.......2007-07-14
This is a great movie, for young and old alike. The animation in it is superb and the comedy is first rate. This movie will still be funny 20 years from now when my grandchildren have children.
Funny, funny, funny!!!!!.......2007-07-13
If this movie doesn't make you laugh, you have a problem. Amazing animation, stellar voice cast, good story and a great message.
My kids watched this..........2007-07-12
My kids watched this and liked it but didn't give me any real feedback on it. I'll update this if I can get something more specific from them or if I have the time to watch it myself.

Tight UK gangsta flick.......2007-06-14
To put it bluntly, the film is great. The story is about family and how nobody can pull these two (Terry and Ray) apart... at least that's how Terry sees it. Along the way, Ray's little UK Garage style dance group finally gets the chance to do a show at a big club but under what consequence? The story has great plot twists making you wonder who is really behind all the killing which is later revealed in a voicemail that Ray receives at the end of the film.
The film features a good soundtrack, mostly UK Garage and breakbeat style tracks. It's too bad we didn't hear any DnB or Jungle. The image of the gangsters is quite solid with their nice armored black cars with bangin sound systems. Bowie's performance is good and in the intro you get to see his eyes in their true form and up close... one eye dilated and the other not.
Overall, in this genre of film, it's top notch... especially if you can relate to the nuances and scene that this is placed in. If you're not all that into UK urban culture or gangster flicks, it might not make a good flick to check, but otherwise... HIT IT UP!
Crime Jealousy & Revenge.......2003-05-17
Goldie and David Bowie star in this gritty crime thriller. The film opens with Ray (Andrew Goth) and Terry (Goldie) getting released from jail. The two are cousins, long-time friends, and fellow gang members. Ray wants to go straight, have a family and a real job. Terry wants to get back in the business and does so with a life of crime. He makes a killing selling drugs to school kids, enlarges his already sizeable arsenal, and intimidates all who encroach on his turf, especially a mysterious Chinese gang. During Terry's incarceration, gang matters were left to the button-down super-efficient dealings of Bernie (Bowie); after his release, tensions between the two thugs rapidly build. Seeing Ray's return to the straight life as weakness, the evil jealous Terry kidnaps and tortures Ray's girlfriend. Ray resolves to get revenge and an ultra-violent shoot out soon ensues. The ending shall leave you in suspense......
Ruff gangsta bizness.......2003-01-02
This quintessentially British movie will prob. leave many Americans confused... but its a terrific film! Called "Everybody Loves Sunshine" in the rest of the world, Busted tells the tale of two half-brothers who start (or try to) new lives after prison. One returns whole-hog to crime, while the other gets caught up in the Garage-club scene and starting a performance group.
There's a quasi-sexual tension between Goth and Goldie, but nothing overtly obvious... this is really not that kind of movie.
Bowie plays his business-manager villain expertly. Cold, calculated and ruthless. It's brilliant!
US audiences will undountedly find the ruff accents to be difficult at times to understand, but the movie captures the grim reality of UK gang wars very well - gangsta life is not a uniquely American thing, after all!
The soundtrack is brilliant, featuring some really nice Jungle, Garage and Ragga sounds... its too bad that this is not available in the States. :-(
Highly recommended for fans of British criminal movies.
Busted.......2002-04-10
I watched BUSTED because I saw it advertised somewhere and so I went out to buy it. BUSTED is very good movie. The action, story line, and the music was good. I was a little disapointed that David Bowie's music wasn't heard. Because I watched BUSTED I am now a Goldie fan. I have most of his CDs. I recommend this movie to anyone who likes action, Goldie or Bowie. Oh and Andrew Goth is really cute he also directed this film.
gangsta flick for the drum'n'bass massive.......2002-01-09
Stylish low budget UK gangsta picture set in Manchester: drum'n'bass and ragga soundtrack with bass at realistic nightclub/car audio volumes (at least on the DVD version). Expect your subwoofer(s) to get a good workout, and things to fall off the walls. Maybe the boy-band-ish dance act is a little cheesy, but the violence and bass make up for it.
While the sound on the DVD is excellent, the video is full-screen (4:3) only, and not very sharp. Some of the text in the credits is nearly illegible. See the forum for this movie at IMDB for a transcription of the soundtrack listing.
