While My Big Fat Greek Wedding broke box-office records in 2002, Real Women Have Curves did a better job of keeping it real. Set in the vibrant environs of East Los Angeles, with a breakthrough performance by Latina newcomer America Ferrera, this comedic drama takes a familiar subject--a bright teenager struggling to define her identity--and turns it into an authentic celebration of feminine empowerment. Eighteen-year-old Ana (Ferrera) has scholarship potential, her first boyfriend, and a chubby figure that her similarly overweight mother (Lupe Ontiveros, perfectly cast) won't stop harping about. Mom insists that Ana work in her sister's dressmaking sweatshop, continuing a family tradition that can only break her spirit. How Ana defies this fate--and how director Patricia Cardoso captures the proud tenacity of several full-figured seamstresses--is what makes this film (adapted from a play by Josefina Lopez) so uniquely refreshing. Greek Wedding made more money, but Real Women--which is just as funny--makes a lot more sense. --Jeff Shannon

Description

A $6 million box office theatrical run followed awards and acclaim at the Sundance Film Festival. Should Ana leave home, go to college and experience life? Or stay home, get married, and keep working in her sister's struggling garment factory? It may seem like an easy decision, but for 18 year-old Ana, every choice she makes this summer will change her life. Right now, she may be making clothes for less shapely women. But Ana is about to discover that real women take chances, have flaws, embrace life, and above all have curves!

It is America Ferrer at her finest. Anyone with old fashioned hispanic parents can relate to her. Highly Recommended!!!!

5 out of 5 stars Fun Movie!.......2007-05-07

I loved this movie....it is exceptionally well acted, witty, with a smart and biting script. Though it's technically a "chick flick", I think men would enjoy it also (although maybe not admit that). I saw it on television and liked it so much I wanted to see the unedited version. You can never go wrong with a movie made by HBO, and is something that you will want to pull out of the drawer and watch again and again.

5 out of 5 stars Portrayal Seems Genuine !.......2007-04-11

Great movie for all ages. This film is very enjoyable and it can be appreciated by any age group. Laughed through most of this mainly upbeat film.

Characters are portrayed very authentically and believable.

Nothing too far fetched (except maybe the underwear dancing factory workers), though that was a hysterical scene.

Loved it !
Recommend it !

4 out of 5 stars The Mother-Daughter Thing.......2007-03-27

I liked this movie a lot. It's not a powerhouse, it's what I think of as a "whisperer." I watched it months ago, and there are some particular moments that keep playing in my mind, still, because I could really feel them. I'm far from being a Latina, but I love Latino/Mexican/Central American culture, so I watched this movie expecting it to be aimed at an audience much younger than me. I love "Ugly Betty" and thought seeing America Ferrera in one of her movies would be interesting. There were several mother-daughter scenes in this movie which really brought forth long-buried memories of exchanges with my own mother, moments where you realize how uncomfortable you're making your mother and you can't help it. As an adult I realize what those moments were, and they don't seem so large and terrible now, but at the time they were. This movie brought them back into focus and made me realize the importance of growing up, of becoming your own person, and the necessity for every daughter to have the courage to "step over" their mother and become herself. It's interesting to watch Ana come through the process and finally realize how HARD her family works to make her able to take that step over. On another note, I am appalled and disappointed at how many fans of Ms. Ferrera have posted on various sites that they love her, love that she's not the usual lookalike skinny stick-insect, and then finish their post with something like, "she'd be prettier if she'd lose weight." It's mean and false. This movie also made me go back and watch "The Joy Luck Club" again, another excellent mother-daughter reflection.

5 out of 5 stars Great Gift to Women of All Sizes & Aspirations.......2007-03-09

It is so wonderful to have a film about women learning to just be who you are, regardless of class background and/or size. A great story of accepting yourself and others, and demanding that you be accepted for who and what you are.

The 2001 romantic Bollywood drama Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham ("Happiness and Tears") proved to be even more successful than Kuch Kuch Hota Hai, the highest-grossing Indian film of all time and one that was also directed by Karan Johar. Starring veteran actor Amitabh Bachchan and wife Jaya, this tells the story of an Indian family who live in palatial comfort but who are riven when the eldest, adopted son Rahul marries Anjali (Kajol) a feisty and attractive woman but whose "lower breeding" causes his father to disapprove of her. Breaking his mother's heart, Rahul moves to Britain with Anjali before younger brother Rohan tries to go after him and end 10 years of estrangement to reunite the family.

Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham is packed with contemporary trappings and production values but is in every way a traditional and generic Hindi movie. Those new to Bollywood might be disconcerted by some of the fashion statements or the mixture of drawn-out, lachrymose melodrama and slightly overplayed comedy-romantic interplay between Rahul and Anjali. There are also some scenes around Leicester Square and Westminster that are almost insulting in their stereotyping of hot, swinging London. However, K3G--as it has become affectionately known--is a riot of joyful color, music and choreography (an embarrassing version of "It's Raining Men" is an exception). This is not a crossover movie, perhaps but a sumptuous treat for Bollywood fans. --David Stubbs

4 out of 5 stars Singing, dancing and happy endings- welcome to Bollywood!.......2007-06-23

It's interesting that so many of the reviewers of this movie have Western names. It looks like Bollywood is starting to gain a non-Indian following in America, and why should we be surprised? Bollywood is fun! Unlike most of the dreadful foreign films that art house lemmings go into raptures over, Americans like Bollywood films for their inherent entertainment value, not because some elite of turtleneck-wearing professors or New York film critics discerns genius in the muddled hallucinations of some Italian gasbag. In Bollywood, Americans can enjoy the kinds of movies that Hollywood used to produce, while learning about a different culture. Of course, the main thing we learn about that culture is that Indian people frequently break out into song and perform lavish dance routines in the street, but still, there are fascinating nuggets of cultural education here. Besides that though, the subject matter of Bollywood films have a universal appeal: love and marriage, family problems, tradition and modernity- and Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham has those themes in spades, along with some catchy tunes ("Say Shava Shava" for one), spectacular dance numbers and good clean fun. This movie is a bit long, but still a great introduction to Bollywood for non-Indians.

5 out of 5 stars A Treat From Beginning To End.......2006-12-23

Kabhi Khushi Kabhi Gham (translated to: Sometimes there is happiness, sometimes there is sadness) is a story about relationships between parents and children, between husband and wife and between siblings. This movie has a great cast, wonderful songs and a good storyline. The acting across the board is great with Shah Rukh Khan and Amitabh Bachan being the stand out stellar performances. The character development is excellent, you can completely identify with the characters. The chemistry between Shah Rukh Khan and Kajol is believable and touching. Kareena Kapoor and Hrithik Roshan's pair is funny and nice also.

The first half of the movie is flashback. The first half of the movie is pretty good overall with a little lull in between. There are some emotional scenes and some funny ones. The second half is perfect. It will make you alternate between laughing out loud or crying in some scenes.

The only criticisms I have with this movie is Johnny Lever is annoying in the first half (he doesn't come in the second half thank goodness) and Kajol overacts at being Punjabi in the first half a little. This movie is like a breath of fresh air after watching "Family Stone" and other American movies where people have sex and/or great drunk or alternately "fall in love" after one meeting and there is no character development or a sense of love on a mental or emotional level. In Bollywood and in Hollywood directors seem to think less character development or the less wholesome a story the better. But in reality after seeing how much people like this movie or wonderful American movies like Secondhand Lions, movie producers and directors should understand that there is still an audience for these kinds of family oriented movies.

5 out of 5 stars One of the best Bollywood films I have seen!.......2006-06-09

I am an avid Bollywood fan, and yes, though that may sound strange (since Bollywood films are typically stereotyped as plotless and pointless), it is who I am and I can't change it. Of course, that doesn't mean I'm not bored by the several, monotonous storylines of "boy-gets-girl". Of course, there are always a few exceptions that stand out from the typical trend. Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham is a shining example. Karan Johar's direction is truly amazing, and the acting is unbeatable. If Johar had cast anybody else to play any of the characters in this film, I doubt it would have been the same. That doesn't mean the film relies heavily on acting. The plot and direction individually are enough to carry the film through. The cinematography is first-rate, and each camera angle seems to have a special, radiant beauty. Overall, a noble endeavor that has resulted in an awesome film. No wonder it was such a big success!

5 out of 5 stars National Geographic said it best when they said, "Shah Rukh Khan is God" (Feb 2005 issue).......2006-06-08

I have watched this movie at least a million times, and I still think it's perfect. Maybe that's one of the great things about Bollywood. There's literally something for everybody in just about every movie, but none more so than this one.

If you are new to Bollywood, you must watch the Holy Trinity, in the following order, and I promise you will be hooked for life. First, DDLJ, or Diwale Dulhania de la Jayenge, or whatever it is. It is the most popular film in the history of the world, and that's a fact. That one stars the same couple as in this film, and there is absolutely no point ever discussing on-screen chemistry after you have seen Shah Rukh Khan and Kajol together. They are--why mince words? perfect. Then you must see Kuch Kuch Hota Hai. You will catch some cool references to DDLJ, and you will see a sexier and more mature Kajol, and SRK is quite different than in DDLJ--he is thinner, more mature, and much handsomer, though he is pretty insufferable in the first part of the movie.

That's another point I'd like to make about Bollywood movies for you non-Desi newcomers to the fold. Each movie is really two movies: there is the fluff in the first half, and then things really get going in the second half. Remember this when you are ready to pull the plug halfway through the first half. Fast forward through the unbearable parts but stay with it. Things are going to get better. Much. Much. Better.

Anyway, turning to the movie at hand, KKKG: Having watched the previous two SRK-Kads starrers, you can now fully appreciate the musical references to KKHH and even DDLJ. But that's just one of the treats in store for you. This movie is indescribably rich and beautiful on so many levels. Don't miss it. It makes a great family entertainment, too--nothing anyone could find remotely objectionable. Everyone I've forced to watch it has without fail become hooked for life just like I am. Like the greatest works of art, you will be changed forever after you see it. Before I discovered these three films, I pretty much hated movies, but now I can honestly say K3G is my favorite movie of all time!

5 out of 5 stars Another Great Bollywood Movie.......2006-04-13

I must agree with the others on this one. This is a great movie. The songs were nice. The storyline was good. The acting was great. And now i understand why Shah Khan is loved and fantasized about by his female fans. That is a sexy man...the lips...the eyes....the looks....he's just hott. Hrithik is gorgeous...love him to death...but i must say, Shah Khan is my 2nd favor Bollywood actor thus far..and he does great acting in my book.
One thing i thought was odd about this movie was that when Rahul left, he LEFT. He removed himself not only from his parents' life, but also his younger brother. I mean, c'mon...Rahul, you coudl have written him a letter or something, keep him up to speed...it's your younger brother...and as for his parents'...i could understand why he did what he did cuz his dad was really harsh, but his mom gave her blessing...she was not in the quarrel at all, but Rahul made everyone suffer because of his father. And why didn't the parents try to contact him...why did it take the younger bro to patch things up? The mother could have, easily. But she allowed the father to keep her from her son which i didn't understand at all. Is this reflective of Indian culture, in the sense that a wife sticks by her husband and lives by his decision? And if that's the case, the husband shouldn't have been that damn prideful. And why didn't Rahul notice his brother...even after what, 10 years...in reality, unless you've had some MAJOR change...you will recognize your family member (even if they lost weight)...but of course, if he recognized his brother, the movie wouldn't have been long at all. So, yes, I think this is a good film. Loved it. Suggest you watch it as well. If not for the storyline, then for the goodlooking Indian men!

Here's where it all began. The first season of Survivor dominated the ratings in the summer of 2000, helped spur the reality-TV craze, and inspired countless water-cooler jokes about getting voted off the island. The first season established the formula that would continue, with sometimes surprising variations, over numerous subsequent seasons: 16 people intended to represent the American mosaic are stranded far from civilization (in this case, the island of Pulau Tiga, off the coast of Borneo), struggle for food and shelter, compete in a series of physical and mental challenges, and at the end of each three-day episode vote out one of their fellow contestants. After 39 days, the one sole survivor who is able to outwit, outplay, and outlast the others wins a million-dollar prize. Because the Survivor craze preceded the craze for complete-season DVD boxed sets, the first season was represented on DVD and video by a 150-minute highlights package called Season One: The Greatest and Most Outrageous Moments. Now, all 13 episodes are available in a five-disc set (the fifth disc is ...Outrageous Moments) that contains every challenge, every political maneuver, every next-episode preview and previous-episode recap, every tribal council including the famous finale, and the reunion show. If you started watching Survivor in the Australian Outback or later, this is the perfect opportunity to see how host Jeff Probst, scheming Richard Hatch, tough truck driver Sue Hawk, ex-Navy SEAL Rudy Boesch, athletic Kelly Wiglesworth, and the others got the ball rolling. If you did watch the first season, here's your chance to relive it, and you also get an enthusiastic group commentary by host Jeff Probst (poking fun at himself) and contestants Hatch (talking the most, which should surprise no one), Boesch, and Gervase Peterson on the first and last episodes, plus some minor featurettes (seven minutes of footage of the contestants leaving L.A. for Borneo, David Letterman's Top 10 featuring the contestants, and 10 minutes of new interviews with Hatch, Boesch, and Peterson). Many reality shows have come and gone in the meantime, but in terms of staying fresh over a long run, Survivor has outwitted, outplayed, and outlasted them all. --David Horiuchi

It's funny to see how this popular show started. Thank goodness they made some improvements during the following seasons.

5 out of 5 stars The Start of a Classic.......2007-02-10

As Survivor started this week with Fiji, you should go back to see how it all started. It was shot in many cases with one camera and things were done on the fly so to speak. In the out takes it explains the how the survivors revolted late in the series when the reward was minimal, and how the production team thought on their feet to fool the winner and provide a good reward.
The voice overs which are optional are good, I watch the series both ways, and sometimes the say something that just makes you laugh or stuns you that you did not think of it before.
This is the original, and worth the watch.

5 out of 5 stars Great.......2007-01-19

Very secvure pacakging and good shipping times, were pleased to be able to locate as we could not find in stores.

3 out of 5 stars OK.......2006-05-23

This season was OK only because a person who didn't deserve the money won it. Kelly should of won hands down. Why did the jury vote Rich? OK Sue, Rudy and Greg had a reason. Wait a minute, Greg did the number thing. So that means that Sue and Rudy had the only good reason voting for Rich and against Kelly. Otherwise the season was very good.

5 out of 5 stars The first is still the best.......2006-01-04

There is no topping Season One of Survivor. Love him or hate him, Richard Hatch made the game of Survivor. Without him, who knows how long this series would have lasted. I've seen every single season of Survivor and I still think Borneo was the best. I enjoy the editing more and its so nice to not have Jeff commentating every challenge nonstop ("So-and-so has her first puzzle piece. Oh now, so-and-so is in the lead". Shut up already!) There wasn't any of that in the first season and I love it. The DVD set is nice, the only thing I wished for more of was behind-the-scenes stuff. I wanted to actually see people filming the castaways and see them doing some of the interviews while on the island. Oh well, still worth buying, that is for sure.

Befitting its boy-band sensibility, On the Line is an amiable vehicle for 'N Sync's Lance Bass, who makes his star-producer debut with this bright-eyed romantic comedy. Bass plays a Chicago adman who meets the girl of his dreams (newcomer Emmanuelle Chriqui) on the "L" train but fails to get her name and phone number. His roommates (including 'N Sync bandmate Joey Fatone) devise a scheme to find the elusive "L-train girl," and like the similarly plotted Serendipity, this love-struck scenario plays out with standard-issue subplots and supporting characters, propelled by a pleasant pop soundtrack and a soulful appreciation for the music of Al Green (who makes one of several celebrity cameos). On the Line was sanitized for a younger audience (with obvious dubbing to replace cruder language), but the squeaky-clean approach is refreshing, even when an end-credit sequence (featuring 'N Sync's Chris Kirkpatrick and Justin Timberlake) suggests a comedic vitality that the rest of the movie lacks. --Jeff Shannon

5 out of 5 stars A nice film for a change.......2006-12-01

Speaking personally, I enjoyed this film: it is lite, entertaining, and entirely devoid of smut and violence, entertaining enough for the whole family to watch and enjoy, thoroughly harmless good fun. Just a really nice story about two likeable people who you desperately want to see get together. Hey, everybody knows people like this: sometimes it works out, sometimes it doesn't.

Maybe it's not quite "Sleepless in Seattle", but if you liked that one, then this one will appeal to you.

Anyrate, that's the opinion of one world-weary and jaded fellow who hasn't enjoyed a romantic comedy so much for a very long time.

5 out of 5 stars Perfect gift for the tweenie bopper.......2006-08-21

Boy finds true love in Chicago on the "L-train" but forgets to ask her name and number. It's a case of the one who got away but hoping to find again with help from the Chicago papers. The only problem is ... when friends get in on the game it takes someone yelling "Have you ever been in love? It's worth the ride" to a group of subway passengers. One thing is for certain ... every tweenie bopper who got this was amused and delighted.

4 out of 5 stars Search for a Soul Mate.......2006-08-20

A surprisingly entertaining movie in which a young man working for an advertising firm is always losing out in life, on the job, as he fails to get credit for his ideas and in romance as he always chokes up before he asks a girl for a date or her phone number. It is young love at its best with music appropriate for the young set and the friends of the young man who support him, then take advantage of him. He meets a girl on the El in Chicago with whom he connects then hesitates and lets her go without
finding out who she is. The plot is about him and his friends trying to locate her with twists and turns all the way. Good clean fun recommended for the romantic of all ages. Review based on purchased VHS.

4 out of 5 stars Romcom for the MTV generation.......2006-03-11

Harmless feelgood romance has rarely been done better or looked more eyecandingly pleasing than here. The visual inventiveness of the opening teenage band scene isn't quite lived up to in the rest of the film (the singer chokes when being urged to dedicate the song to the girl of his dreams - we see him sweat and literaly 'feel naked'). Nevertheless, 90 minutes of sweetnatured and agreeable diversion.

4 out of 5 stars Please enter a title for your review.......2005-09-16

I don't remember what made me decide I wanted to see this movie, I think it was the fact that Dave Foley from Newsradio and Kids In The Hall was in it. I mean you look at the cover, Joey Fatone in some retarded pose with a guitar, Lance Bass looking like a grinning mannequin, and the title outlined in pink and purple, you have to figure it's substanceless preteen-oriented fluff, but if Dave Foley chose to be involved with it maybe there's more to it. Well it's really not the preteen-oriented movie I feared, it's basically just a standard twentysomething romantic comedy with an emphasis on collegiate humour, and is above average for it's genre. I'm assuming the movie totally wasn't written with the N Sync members in mind, and if anyone else from young hollywood had been cast for Lance Bass' part the movie would have had a better shot at reaching a wider audience. Nothing against Lance or Joey though, they're fine in their parts. It was really mostly the cover that put me off considering watching the movie. This movie is an equal peer of movies like The Bachelor, The Sweetest Thing, 40 Days And 40 Nights, 100 Women, and Loser.

okay, this one of those movies where sometimes it's great and sometimes it's not so great. deceived is okay but it isn't perfect, some of the acting isn't at its best but hey otherwise it's pretty dang good. one of my gripes is that it donesn't have a have a film commentary but hey thats me maybe you don't like them or don't care one way or the other about them. overall if you are looking for a pretty good flick this should be at least on your top 30 to buy. rated 4/5

4 out of 5 stars a signal from beyond-an enemy within.......2007-04-05

The plot:
Two people working in an observatory searching for alien life finally pick up a signal! A team is sent to investigate the signal including Shaw, the owner of the project, Jack, the computer geek with a hearing aid due to a hearing problem, a tv reporter, Rev. Fletucher, who believes there is a higher power than God (he really makes no sense throughout the movie), and the director, a beautiful, yung Christian woman (she and Fletucher do not believe the same things). When they listen to the signal, they all start to behave in strange ways, except Jack beacuse of huis hearing problem, and the Christian woman. As the movie goes on, a series of mystries unravels. Does the signal really come from space, or does it come from somewhere else? As the movie goes on, you figure out that the signal is from beyond. The enemy, is within.

Though this film isn't one of the best Christian films when it comes to the truth about Christanity, it does show God;s pwoer over satan. It will call every hristian to reexamine their faith.

4 out of 5 stars strange and interesting.......2007-04-05

I am a loyal Cloud Ten Pictures Fan. Otherwise, I would have never purchased this movie. When I first put it in, I didn't really know what to expect. I really didn't know much about the movie. But, as a loyal CTP fan, I thought it would be, at worst, okay. It turns out this movie is pretty good.

The plot:
Two observers at Shaw observatory, a company looking for aliens, picks up a signal. A group is sent to investigate including;Shaw himself, Revrend Fletucher, who is not a Christian, but believes there is a higher power than god (he doesn't ever make any sense in the movie), a reporter, a technology geek who uses a hearing aid, and the Christian assistant/director. When they listen th the dignal, something happens in their eyes. Then, things start to go haywire as a mystery unravels. Does the signal really come from space, or is it coming from somewhere else? Why is everything going so haywire? Is the enemy within?

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Witnessing Tool.......2007-03-21

This movie is a classic example of the human condition: if you don't stand for anything, you will fall for everything.

A mysterious signal appears and everyone thinks that it is from space. However, not everyone hears the same thing and, everyone reacts to it in a different way.

4 out of 5 stars The Christian answer to "Contact".......2006-12-25

Sci-fi/paranormal thriller based on SETI Home & U.S. military paranormal experimentation -- almost all the action takes place in a privately-owned observatory in the Sierra Nevadas. Compares well with the Hollywood movie, "Contact." Surprisingly, I liked it a lot up until the end ...

Besides the obvious "Contact" comparison, "Deceived" seems to me like a grown-up version of Bill Meyers' "Forbidden Doors" (a series of novels for Christian teens which I LOVE & I wish someone would make movies out of THOSE), but (to me) "Deceived" seems to lose something by the end ...

Can't quite put my finger on it, although I must say that I enjoyed the movie A LOT more than I thought I would. (I THOUGHT it was going to be hopelessly hokey.) I do agree with the basic premise, though -- & that's why I mentioned the "Forbidden Doors" series ...

4 out of 5 stars A creepy slowburn..........2007-08-13

A very different film from director Eric Stanze, Deadwood Park marks a very different direction for Wicked Pixel whose previous efforts include the notorious Scrapbook and the surreal Ice From The Sun. This film is more in line with more traditional ghost stories like The Changling and the insanely stylish cinematography goes a long way to making this low budget feature look considerably more expensive than it was to make - a testament to the production team's abilities.

Those looking for cheap, trashy thrills or gore galore will not find what they're looking for here but if intelligent scares that sneak up behind you and linger for a while are you bag, check this one out.

4 out of 5 stars Weird and creepy!!!.......2007-08-05

The Film:

Little kids are scary. If movies like THE OMEN, THE SHINING, and now Wicked Pixel's DEADWOOD PARK have taught us anything, it's that little kids are frickin' terrifying. And while those old school classics showcased talent from some of Hollywood's most well-known and well-respected players, director Eric Stanze (of Ice From The Sun and Scrapbook) and the rest of the crew at St. Louis' Wicked Pixel Cinema, The Little Company That Could, us show that not do they roll with some scary little kids, but they also have an abundance of cinematic vision like their genre forefathers. And while their latest film, DEADWOOD PARK, is far from perfect, it is easily their most ambitious project to date, and offers the viewer a very watchable flick that sports some spooky imagery that will stick with them long after the film is over.

A Gen-X business dude named Jake (William Clifton of China White Serpentine) returns to his childhood hick town home to find that the town hasn't gotten any less creepy since he was a kid. And for good reason. A rash of unsolved child killings had taken place over a period of time, and the town never really got over it. And to make matters worse, it seems that Jake had never gotten over it either. Because not only was his twin brother the killer's final victim, but he also finds that not long after he arrives in town, he comes down with a severe case of Creepydeadkidaphobia. Yes, Jake sees dead people. And hears dead people. And he doesn't like it much.

He soon hooks up with a strangely eager, yet pleasingly cute store clerk named Olivia (Lindsey Dee Luscri) who is more than willing to help him find out more about the killings and possibly who the killer was (or is). And even though her father, the sheriff (Bryan Lane of Killers By Nature), seems to have a mad-on for Jake, she uses his resources behind his back, presumably because she's from a small town and she has the hots for the new kid in town.

As the plot gets deeper, the film jumps back and forth through time, revealing pieces of the puzzle in a very stylized way. This is a pretty cool device, but it also contributes to one of the film's flaws. The film is a mish-mash of genres. It's part ghost story, part mystery, and part... something else. And as a result of trying to do too many things, the film seems to occasionally lose focus, and some of the exposition scenes kind of drag. Trimming a few minutes here and there might have given the film more impact, but perhaps some of the story would have been lost because so many ideas are being introduced. The movie does take an amazingly weird turn into another genre, and the ending is very satisfying if over-the-top is what you're looking for.

As for the performances, some of the acting has the stiffness of inexperience but yet some of the acting is quite good, even from some of the bit players. The script is clever, and some of the actors really did their lines justice, while others could have used a few more takes had budget and resources allowed. But for the most part, I feel like they did a solid job overall.

DEADWOOD PARK is a fun, yet somewhat unfocused film that tries to do many things, and for the most part succeeds. The genre-bending nature of the film might turn some folks off, while others might appreciate the different flavors, as this horror sandwich has a few different layers.

Video:

While the final version of this DVD is not yet available, the pre-release disc I reviewed looked great. Even though the budget was considerably lower than Hollywood standards, the picture is colorful and clear.

The 1.85.1 aspect ratio really comes into play, as the practical locations used for filming really open up the scope of the movie, especially the abandoned amusement park that the film is named after. It really is amazing, and every cent of production value can be seen onscreen. From the creepy underground tunnels of the park, to the full-on war scene, the filmmakers were going for the visual goods, and the DVD shows it all off well.

There are many dark scenes in the film, and while that's where many DVDs drop the ball, this film looks good during those moments.

Audio:

Even though this was a test disc, the sound mix was on point. The 2.0 mix had some fun activity in two channels, and was effective in building tension. The soundtrack, which was all done in-house, is a big strong point for the film. The tense soundtrack makes an uncomfortable contrast to the equally-disturbing quiet moments, and the swells and strings were done really well.

Extras:

The pre-release screener contained only a teaser trailer, and the flick itself. But the groovy kids at Wicked Pixel love their bonus features, so I expect there to be some when the finished disc is released.

Overall:

DEADWOOD PARK is a genre-bending horror film for horror fans who like it weird and creepy. Even though it is not as exploitive as some of the Wicked Pixel films, it does have some over-the-top moments even though much of the film is slow-burn creepiness. While the film does have its issues, it certainly manages to be at times horrific, disturbing, weird, and cool. Throw in some scary little kids and some really cool locations, and you have yourself a horror movie that will throw you for a loop a couple times before it's done with you.
