Amazon.com essential video
This absolute winner, based on a stage play by Jonathan Harvey and adapted by him, is a kind of enchanted, urban slice-of-life tale about a gay teen, Jamie (Glen Berry), who is in love with the boy next door, Ste (Scott Neal). Hampering Jamie's progress on the romantic front is his fear that his mother (Linda Henry) will find out, as well as concern over complicating Ste's existing problems. Beautiful Thing is a relationship movie, to be sure, but that description doesn't really describe the buoyant tone of this British television production. Democratic in its inclusive regard for each character (whether camera-pretty or not), the film--well-directed by Hettie Macdonald--is full of surprises. Chief among them is the terrific personality of Jamie's mum, a strong and independent woman who truly worries over and adores her son. But this is a movie involved in a kind of happy dialogue with itself: the tunes of Mama Cass, for instance, play a part in both the story and overall ambience, while a strategic placement of the Rodgers and Hammerstein chestnut "Sixteen Going on Seventeen" during an act of love is fun and exciting. --Tom Keogh
Description
A pair of teenage boys growing up in a working-class neighborhood become aware of their homosexuality. While both were vaguely aware they might be gay, neither had ever acted on their impulses. Once they decide that they're attracted to each other, neither is sure just what to do. Winner of 4 International Film Festival Awards.

Touching.......2007-09-04
Great story of two boys falling in love. Sits in the important part of my collection.
The Movie.......2007-08-31
The movie was pretty good. It also has closed caption. Closed Caption is a plus. Because I am hearing impaired.
The cover is also good. because it shows part of the movie of what is about. so, Its good.
Amazing Movie :).......2007-07-18
I love the story to this movie. The acting is great, the plots good, and some parts throughout the movie really hit my heart and made me feel what the boys were feeling. This is definately a movie everyone should see. It kinda funny because Im 19 and this is pretty much the same way me and my current boyfriend met.
I RECOMMEND TO ALL!!!!!
A Flawed Thing.......2007-07-16
Many gay reviewers unfortunately have not been balanced in rating films like this and rate it so highly primarily due to a misguided loyalty to anything gay rather than things of quality.
This film has a touching storyline at times and I have to admire that, however it is far too flawed in its disjointed and very assuming storytelling to deserve such a high rating and content wise the love story, coming of age and coming out may be beautiful but the drug content, language and sudden coming out of many characters who were straight without clear explaination of the reversal of sexuality is more than a little confusing.
An average film dipicting poor, violent and crass British folks and the love between two teenage boys in this enviroment. Has some very touching moments, but overall highly flawed.
The DVD would also have benefitted from optional subtitles, like most do, for those of us who find the heavy British accents hard to understand.
good story.......2007-07-13
This is a touching story that reminds me of some things that happened in my own life. Two boys in love with each other does happen. And it truly is a beautiful thing.

Fun and entertaining........2007-01-17
The Hip Hop Kidz video movie has a good story and great music. Kids and teenagers will enjoy watching it, and their parents won't be bored either.
Recommended for anyone who likes to perform or ever dreamed of being a music or dance star.
Sweet Hip Hop, A new Genre has been invented...........2006-10-12
Wow I just watched this. You know, it was awsome hip hop dancing and the kids are amazing. The music is all original Hip Hop, written by the hip hop kidz to have clean lyrics but with a cool edgy vibe. The story is a little school-aged adventure about trying to come together to make a music video for a online music contest. They run in to obsticles along the way. All in all, it was a cool youthful fairytale mixed with hip hop style.
Great kids movie!!!!.......2006-10-07
Bright colors, catchy music, cute story, positive message! The making of video was almost as entertaining as the movie. If you have kids, buy this movie!!!

Love - A Beautifully Brutal Thing...!.......2007-04-22
At that Black Man Film Festival in Atlanta, 2006, this movie was billed as a documentary - it isn't, but that's how real it feels.
It's an involving tale of two people trying to make sense of their lives and, whilst struggling with fledgling creative careers, trying to find validation through their relationship with each other, as so many of us tend to do.
It's interesting and well observed how the female lead, Schola, needs more and more from her relationship as her world outside of it fails to offer her the validation she craves - as an actress, as a black woman, as a success... While the male lead, Gabe, gradually extricates himself emotionally from the relationship in order to focus and try to make strides in his elusive film-making career. What they end up with is a strained sexual relationship and a gradual refusal of the very thing they both sought of each other in the beginning of their relationship - affection, admiration, adulation... Affirmation.
It's refreshing to see black actors in roles that don't require playing "up" being black. The characters are not overly funny, overly cool, overly rhythmic, overly "black..." They're simply human, with all the beauty and flaws that being human entails.
It's also a refreshingly realistic look at love and its pitfalls and, like the director's use of New York as a backdrop, does not rely on glossy images and hackneyed ideas of romance and idealism where everything inevitably ends up happily ever after.
Instead, "Beautiful Things" reflects the anxieties, the joys, the fears, and the uncertainties that we generally encounter in our romantic liaisons and is a perfect example of art imitating life - to the extent that, despite it's naïve beauty, it makes you forget that it's art at all.
Good job Tambay!.......2007-04-10
Hopes, dreams and love are one's desires, yet pose life's struggles. Centering on two characters- Scola, an aspiring actress and Gabe, an aspiring film maker, the film portrays the two as free spirited individuals in the beginning and takes on the search for meaning when one encounters the other and develops a relationship. In the end, they fall into the point of self evaluating or defining one's desires or redirecting from original desires. The struggle is inherent- reality versus the dream. The color scenes are a bit too raw, but ask the questions of life or what's next? It is the poetic black and white imagery in BEAUTIFUL THINGS that are the more powerful accounts, capturing moments of original desires.
a play about relationships.......2007-03-09
Most films are variations of the "Boy meets girl, boy struggles with girl and boy eventually wins back girl" theme, but, few exist as imaginative and stylish as Beautiful Things. In his feature film debut, 33-year-old Writer/Director, Tambay Obenson has crafted a sophisticated, art-house variation on this subject. With alternating Black/White vignettes and color scenes, Beautiful Things is at once a play about relationships and a film which proves that to love is indeed, an act of the will-
A nice little tale about falling in love........2007-03-08
Beyond the black and white, this is a quiet, absorbing tale about 2 people who meet and fall in love. The excitement of first contact is eventually transformed into the boredom of familiarity. The characters have to dig down really deep into their souls- each has to decide for themselves if the relationship is worth saving. And in a sense perhaps they can then figure out what true love may be all about. Love as intangible as it might be, is the real star of this movie.
Love is rarely portrayed so honestly - black love rarely portrayed so beautifully.......2007-03-06
With its judicious use of black and white, New York, and a cool jazz score, this at times puts me in mind of early John Cassavetes and, with it's improv/unscripted feel, it's like you're actually privy to the intimate details of a real young couple's relationship - from its fledgling flirty stage, through its angst ridden, flailing progress, to its uncertain demise...
Despite the odd Spike Lee reference too many (really not the best way to get a girl to have sex), this is an absolute gem of a movie!

Mahoromatic.......2006-04-25
Outstanding! Keep in mind this anime is from Japan. I get a kick out how some people like to say that this anime has a lot of fan service that is not needed. I say that it is part of the story and one should respect the wishes of the story tellers.
In other words, how would you feel if the Japanese would to say that they don't like the way we play baseball and we should play the game Japanese style. Get my point? Poeple should try not to be so obtuse about anime that is from another counrty. That's part of their culture. Enjoy it for what it is.
The ending broke my heart and I have many feelings about what went on with our little Mahoro-san. I do have this to say about Mahoro-san. She may have not been an android after all. Think about it. A android that bleeds? Feels pain? And has strong feelings about life and living? I think she was a cyborg and a clone of Matthew created by Vespar. After a battle, a Saint agent asked if they could help repair Mahoro-san. The Vesper scientists stated no way and would not let them near her. Why? Anyways, get this DVD!!!
If one is really into this anime I would also read the comic books as well in order to get a better understanding on how and why it ended the way it did. I think the TV people were press for time when they ended the anime, which left a lot of questions. This anime is popular all over the world and for good reason.
Light and Funny vs Heart Wrenchingly Lovesick.......2005-10-07
This was my first school/harem type anime and I must say it was quite enjoyable. In the near future Earth is under attack from an alien race called `Saint'. A secret society employs humanoid combat androids to fight against the attackers. The greatest of these is Mahoro, in the shape of a comely 19 year old. When her tour of duty is done she requests to be allowed to live out her limited lifespan caring for a young 14 year old named Suguru. The son of a war casualty she feels responsible for. Mahoro meets Suguru and passes herself off as a simple maid who happens to have been a warrior in her prior life. The series then moves through a slow arc as the two sweetly come to love each other while dealing with the more mundane scholastic existence of Suguru and his friends. Meanwhile the darker side of the plot continues to fester in the background as Saint's greatest warrior goes after Mahoro. In the second series Minawa a young android from a third faction called Management comes into play. As Mahoro nears the end of lifespan things escalate, both feelings of love and the plots against her where she must make a decision that will affect her and Suguru for years in the future. The final episode is one that has been ravaged by fans, I will admit that it really emotionally hit me hard seeing Suguru in such a state. Anyone that has loved and lost will feel a twisted knife of a reminder in their heart seeing what he has gone through. The dichotomy with the rest of the series is quite extreme as it got back to being so serious in the last couple episodes after the majority of the lighter versions. Taken together though the Mahoromatic series is a lot of fun and an engaging love story with plenty of fan service and a nice ensemble collection of secondary characters. Recommended.
One of the best animes I have seen.......2005-09-30
I started off buying the manga at my local bookstore, until I found the first dvd of Mahoromatic at Suncoast. The story is exactly like the manga so far, there is still one book to be released. The second season has a nice intermission of the holiday season and then jumps right back into the conclusion of the series. The ending does leave alot of questions unanswered in my opinion. I would like to see an OVA evolve out of this series, if even just a short one to explain what has happened and to find out if miss shikigo ever ages. OMG that lady never changes. She has got to be one of my favorite characters and one of the only bits of comedy in the last couple of episodes. No matter how depressing the story gets she is always there to add a perverted sideswipe to the events depicted. I do believe they pushed the ending. It was a good ending, but could use a better and more drawn out explanation. I had to watch the final 2 episodes a few times through to finaly have a strong understanding of what happened. I do suggest you share this series with others, but only if the mature content doesn't offend them. Maybe there will be an OVA one day, propably not, but we can only hope.
FANTASTIC.......2005-06-28
What can i say, from the beginning to the end of the series was a great enjoyment, story, characters, and humor were all great but the real drama comes in the last disk of the series. I wont spoil it but the ending did put make me a bit teary eyed and does make you think what that the best happend and it just wasnt all an illusion or just a 1 minute of happiness type thing, the drama is superb though in this last disk, just a total shocker from being light hearted and perverted to just good drama with an excellent story and ending.
Great anime.......2005-01-29
Ok this anime was one of the best i've seen and i've seen alot. ending was sad and diffrent but great. the only thing that keeps me thinking is that it may be a dream?
