In the future, crime is out of control and New York City is a maximum security prison. Grabbing a bargaining chip right out of the air, convicts bring down the President's plane in bad old Gotham. Gruff Snake Plissken, a one-eyed warrior new to prison life, is coerced into bringing the President, and his cargo, out of this land of undesirables. Kurt Russell put his Disney days behind him as the nicest bad guy in the picture. All comic-book sensibilities and macho posturing, this is one of writer-director John Carpenter's better brainless escapes. There are snappy one-liners and explosive action scenes. However, the film lacks tension and some believability even within the realm of SF fantasy. Even when it fails to gel, though, it always manages to amuse, thanks in great part to a varied and unusual supporting cast (watch for Ernest Borgnine as a cabdriver). Followed in 1996 by Carpenter's overdone and campy Escape from L.A. --Rochelle O'Gorman

Description

A thrilling landmark film that jolts along at a breakneck pace, Escape From New York leapt to cult status with high-octane action, edge-of-your-seat suspense and a mind-blowing vision of a lone warrior (Kurt Russell) battling his way out of a post-apocalyptic Manhattan! Hailed as "stylish and scary" (Los Angeles Times), "dark and dangerous" (Newsweek) and "gloriously...fun" (Tyler Morning Telegraph), this fast-paced and furiously entertaining thriller grabs you by the throat and won't let go! In a world ravaged by crime, the entire island of Manhattan has been converted to a walled prison where brutal prisoners roam. But when the U.S. President (Donald Pleasence) crash-lands inside, only one man can bring him back: notorious outlaw and former Special Forces war hero Snake Plissken (Russell). But time is short: in 24 hours, an explosive device implanted in his neck will end Snake's missionand his lifeunless he succeeds!

I bought this product at Wal-Mart for $5. I couldn't believe they had it so cheap. It's a lot of fun.

5 out of 5 stars One of John Carpenter's best on a great 2-Disc set!.......2007-07-27

In the future, Manhattan Island has become a large prison island unlike alcatraz where criminals rules and there are no guards for the crooks run free on the island doing whatever they want. The President (Donald Pleasance) has crashed landed by accident and is kidnapped by ruthless thugs led by the Duke (Issac Hayes), the military sends out a lone former solider and criminal named Snake Plisskin (Kurt Russell) to find the president, he's been implanted with an explosive device inside him and will explode within 24 hours if he fails but if he succeeds then it will be removed.

A unique and original Sci-fi action thriller from the maker of "Halloween" and "The Thing" John Carpenter and is one of the true sci-fi classics of all time. Kurt Russell is perfection playing the memorable cult anti-hero Snake Plisskin much like Carpenter's other Kurt Russell hero creation Jack Burton from "Big Trouble in Little China". The film co-stars Andrienne Barbeau, Harry Dean Stanton, Ernest Borgnine, Lee Van Cleef, and Tom Atkins with an uncredited voice over by Jamie Lee Curtis and has good acting, good special effects for it's time, an original storyline and the qualty of the film makes the New York in this movie look like a realistic post-apocalyptic New York, the music score by John Carpenter is very haunting as well.

This awesome 2-Disc special edition has excellent picture and sound quality with two audio commentaries, a comic book inside the case, Still gallery, Trailers especially to a few other MGM releases, deleted scene, and three featurettes especially on the making of the Snake Plisskin comic. Own this must have movie and DVD for your Sci-fi and action collection today!

5 out of 5 stars Call me Snake!!.....................2007-07-12

This film is another cult classic from John Carpenter, the first one was Assault on precinct 13 and then Halloween ect. it was made in 1981 and starred Kurt Russel in his first lead role, this dvd was excellent and has a ton of special features in it including the infamous bank robbery scene that was deleted for some reason even though it was brilliant and should have been kept in the film. In 1997 the island of Manhattan has been turned into the world's largest maximum security prison , a place where some of the most dangerous and worst criminals are being held and land minds have bent set up around the place along with some guards securing the area from huge walls so no one can escape. The U.S. government finds itself in a major crisis when the president's plane crash lands somewhere in New York only days before a peace conference between other nations, he has been taken hostage and held for ransom so its up to a convict and anti-hero Snake Plissken (played by Kurt Russel in his best role ever) to save the president (Donald Pleasence) and he needs to do this before he gets infected by a virus and killed it was injected in him by force so he has no choice. Kurt Russel has created a very memorable and over the top character thats alot of fun to watch and he does almost seem like Clint Eastwood with the way he talks hes like the ultimate tough guy and check out that big gun I thought it was very cool. Anyway this film is highly amusing in some places and is definitely one of the greatest b-movies of all time even though its very cheesy and a bit outdated especially when Snake has to retrieve some top secret information on a cassette tape, nowadays it would have been a cd and people would have cell phones instead of huge walkie talkies or whatever there called lol. The other actors were also great like Isac Hayes as the bad guy and Lee Van Cleef from The good, the bad and the ugly as well as Adrienne Barbeau as Maggie in a hilarious outfit who helps out when Snake was in trouble in a memorable scene. Escape form New York is a great action/sci fi film that is guaranteed to not disappoint because it is a fun film that has alot of wit and energy that marks a John Carpenter picture, the sequel was not as good but was still enjoyable enough to watch. This film was way better than wasting my time on a dumb big budget Hollywood blockbuster film those usually end up being so retarded, I highly recommend this exciting film and two thumbs up.

You can't beat this deal. Three great post nuke movies, uncut, digitally remastered on DVD for only $18. One of these movies alone is worth that. Buy this thing before it goes oop and the price raises to $50 each DVD.

5 out of 5 stars i got a great deal.......2007-02-16

i bought this pack for $3.00 at suncoast videos and i'll never regret it

each one of these movies has mindless fun i'll start with 2019 After th Fall of New York i think Children of Men ripped this off but these is a lot better action wise theres nasty looking mutants, flesh eating rats, weapons that sometimes sound like childrens toys, and a colony of underground dwarfs

next is 1990 The Bronx Warriors this has fred williamson as a king of a gang this movie is very entertaining theres really cool fight scenes and idiotic diolauge my favourite scene is when fred chops of a scavengers head

last is The New Barbarians fred williamson is also in this and he has exploding arrows this movie is very weird not as enjoyable as the others but its still good

i highly recommend this pack for some mindless fun

5 out of 5 stars POST-APOCALYPTIC CHEESE FILLED FUN !! .......2006-12-17

Any fan of the 1980's post-apocalyptic film craze would be happy to own this triple feature. This set features:1990 Bronx Warriors:2019 After the fall of New York and The New Barbarians.Shriek show studios has done an amazing job with the video transfer of these movies. The picture quality from shriek show is better than any version i've ever seen. It's obvious that some effort was put into the quality of this set by shriek show.2019:After the fall of New York has 5.1 digital sound while 1990 Bronx Warriors and the New Barbarians have 2.0 sound.Special features on the dvd's include trailers, commentaries and interviews.Three movies for one low price and you get to feed your post-apocalyptic hunger at the same time.

3 out of 5 stars Post Apocalyptic Triple Feature: A decent set........2006-10-06

Here is another set from Media-Blasters featuring 3 Itlaian cult classics. Media-Blasters is really making a name for themselves with the movies they put out. They cater to fans of cult cinema.

First up we have 2019: After the Fall of New York directed by Sergio Martino going under the name Martin Dolman. 2019 is a little bit of Mad Max, but a lot more Escape From New York.

Cult actor Michael Sopkiw is pretty much playing Kurt Russell's Snake Plissken. I have to admit I really like Michael Sopkiw, he may not be known to the mainstream public, but for those who do know him find him entertaining.

Sergio Martino at one point made some excellent Giallos I wonder why he started doing knock off films? 2019: After the Fall of New York is a fun movie no doubt. We have some poor F/X, which really add to the charm of the flick. Not a great movie, but damn fun. With Michael Spokix and George Eastman in the same movie that means fun.

1990: Bronx Warriors was directed by Enzo G. Castellari and it's quite obvious this was inspired by The Warriors. To be quite honest I found 1990: Bronx Warriors rather dull.

There just wasn't enough action and lets face it a movie like this needs that. 1990 has it's moments, but more than often it's just too slow. The highlight is Mark Gregory who plays Trash. What's the deal with the way he walks? Rather funny.

Fred Williamson appears as does cult actor George Eastman.

And finally we have The New Barbarians again directed by Enzo G. Castellari, which again stars Fred Williamson and George Eastman (is this guy great or what?).

The New Barbarians is fairly decent, but it just doesn't work in my opinion. Worth watching at least once, but besides that there is no rush to see it again.

I love 80 Italian cinema and for those reading this I assume you do as well. In that case you might like the set or you may not. I love these kind of flicks, but I just didn't really enjoy these movies except for 2019: After the Fall of New York.

Like all of Media-Blasters sets it's cheaper to buy the set than any of the movies on their own.

As I stated before I love 80s Italian cinema, but this set just didn't do it for me. But it wasn't a total waste due to 2019.

4 out of 5 stars Just what you need.......2006-05-06

It's a low price for a set of low-budget movies. Fair enough !

I'm into this just for the nostalgia. I'm not going to claim
that these movies expand the boundaries of cinematographic art.
But they're quite enjoyable as a guilty pleasure.

5 out of 5 stars Great Cormania!.......2003-01-27

As presented by Roger Corman, the famous producer whose SciFi
epics have launched stellar Hollywood careers, "Raiders of The
Sun" on DVD allows current audiences the nostalgia of a return to the movies of the 1980s and '90s that were influenced by the success of "Mad Max" and "Road Warrior." Martial arts movie great Richard Norton proves to be a compelling hero in one of his early lead roles - demonstrating the charisma upon which he built his starring career in action films. Solid character actor William Steis shows up as a henchman. The plot has all the classic apocalyptic ingredients. We are treated to
generous doses of anarchy, insurrection, and ultimate salvation
from the dark forces who rule with an arsenal of explosives and
vehicular hardware. Typical of Corman's releases, the budget is
not so generous, but a reliance on emerging talent and film
makers - over high costs - is often part of the Corman formula
and always a part of the fun in seeing his movies again. Enjoy!

Description

It's the year 2019, the world devastated by a nuclear war. It is a land where gangs of human predators travel in packs like wolves, where junkyards are filled with the dying remnants of society, and an army of carnivorous military prisoners threaten a fragile sliver of civilization. The only hope of the few remaining survivors is to reach a distant land from where radio signals, indicating the possible presence of human life.

5 out of 5 stars A+ post nuke film.......2007-07-21

I have very fond memories of this movie. I remember buying it at the mall on VHS when I was like 10. It was one of the first sci-fi movies I ever saw. Heck, it was one of the first movies I ever saw. I still have my old VHS tape. I didn't really like it back then. I remember the box art was misleading. The box art implied this movie had to do with a gang of thugs in an urban city. I had no idea it was a post nuke movie. There was also a small picture of Fred Williamson on the box. I wondered who he was back then, having never heard of him. I would later (much later) discover that he is one great actor, whose made alot of movies in this genre. The movie itself centers around an ex templar and his attempt to protect a religious group from the templars, a mad cult whose mission is to eradicate all human life on the planet. George Eastman and his second in command (dont remember his name) really shine in this movie. Unfortunately, Williamson takes the back seat, and Scorpio gets all the screen time. I think Scorpio did an adequate job, but perhaps his character should have been removed, and the movie should have centered around Williamson. Perhaps Scorpio should have played the secondary character. That would have made it better, but still, its a great movie.

2 out of 5 stars A science-fiction story: survival among competing clans for domination.......2007-03-24

With the "New Barbarians", released in 1982, Enzo G. Castellari
and cohorts clearly had one primordial objective: to create a
work that would be taken seriously, not an object of ridicule.
This was attained, no matter the technology of the time or the
modest budget on which this work was carried to completion. Not
unlike the small onboard computer on the Space Shuttle from
1970's era CPU's, today's films have a lot more technology and
money thrown at them, influencing the final product. I would
not, however, discount this movie for those 2 reasons alone.

The audience will perhaps show different reactions to this
picture. One, that it is perhaps of foremost interest to 5 to 10
year olds, which is not an impossibility. Another take, is that
it was intended to be innovative, taking to the silver screen, a
science-fiction story.

There is no doubt, that in terms of taking viewers to another
time and space, over a 90 minute dream sequence, the film is
successful. There are a number of pyrotechnic explosions,
stunts, specially designed vehicles, motorcycles, and so on,
that add to the unreal or perhaps surreal atmosphere.

Another analysis is that it is perhaps a psy-op to manipulate
the public's emotions, motives, reasoning and logical processes
to obtain a change in behavior among the audience. This is a
less convincing argument, as it is independently made, and
entertaining.

Here, the story writer breaks down people's lives in the most
rudimentary manner possible, and their realities, to the most
basic aspects and instincts needs. The characters assemble in
gangs, and fight for survival among the competing clans,
fighting against each other for domination, through physical and
violent confrontation. The film also has its softer moments, as
the warriors retreat to their girlfriends and families.

The soundtrack is decent, and no doubt is compatible with the
underlying action sequences. The opening theme seems to be
inspired by Loverboy's "Turn Me Loose" (a bit hit single in
1981, when this movie was in production).

For those who have seen Mad Max, Thunderdome, for example, this
is almost the exact style of movie to expect in this rental,
which is value for the money as seen in a theater. The
widescreen release is a treat.

4 out of 5 stars The New Barbarians.......2006-09-12

The New Barbarians is the same movie as Warriors of the Wasteland. Be careful not to buy both as I have - unless you want to. The DVD's are different as Barbarians is widescreen, and has a commentary by the director, Enzo Castellari, as well as an interview of Fred Williamson, the co-star. It also includes the trailer. The box describes the bad guys as "carnivorous military prisoners" but this must be a bad translation. The bad guys, who call themselves Templers are an all male cult who wear white coveralls with exagerated shoulder pads and dedicate themselves to the extermination of human survivors as they blame mankind for destroying the world. The good guys look more like survivors of the 60's than survivors of a nuclear war. The plot is simple, lots of action, lots of explosions, and a fairly high body count, but I won't tell you how it ends, just in case you want to see it.

2 out of 5 stars "Hate! Hate! And Exterminate!".......2005-08-17

Holy regurgitated film sequences, Batman! While watching The New Barbarians (1982) aka Warriors of the Wasteland aka I Nuovi barbari it's nearly impossible not to notice how much this Italian post apocalyptic exploitation flick takes from other, more popular and infinitely better produced films. Now I'll agree this kind of thing isn't limited to the Italian cinema, as Hollywood can be just as unoriginal (and often is), but in terms of brazenly reproducing plots and sequences, the Italians seemed to have few equals...I mean, nearly this entire film was lifted from The Road Warrior (1981), along with a few others, specifically the Clint Eastwood westerner A Fist Full of Dollars (1964), which was also an Italian film that stole from previously made Japanese film titled Yojimbo (1961). Oh well...as the saying goes `What was once old is new again"...or better yet, `If you haven't seen it, it's new to you'. Co-written and directed by Enzo G. Castellari, who would later further beat the genre into the ground with such classics as 1990: The Bronx Warriors (1982) and Escape from the Bronx (1983), The New Barbarians stars Giancarlo Prete (Detective School Dropouts, Ladyhawke), George Eastman (Antropophagus, Sexy Nights of the Living Dead), and Fred `The Hammer' Williamson (Black Caesar, Mr. Mean), none of whom were strangers to the world of craptacular cinema. Also appearing is Anna Kanakis (2019: After the Fall of New York), Giovanni Frezza (Manhattan Baby), Massimo Vanni (1990: The Bronx Warriors), and Ennio Girolami (Escape from the Bronx), who looks so much like actor Lee Van Cleef its creepy...if Lee Van Cleef wore a crummy blonde wig.

As the film begins we learn the year is 2019, and the nuclear holocaust is over, but the nightmare is just beginning. There seems to be three groups wandering the wastelands of what was once civilized society;

1. Caravanning bands of survivors, clinging meekly to their precious humanity, constantly monitoring the radio airwaves, searching for signs of life, and surviving on the hope of finding other pathetic non-mutated souls like themselves (strength in numbers, I suppose).
2. Those once humans irrevocably altered by the atomic wastes, since transformed into feral, cannibalistic mutants (`nuff said).
3. The Templars, a gang of nihilistic fancy lads dressed in white who are self proclaimed `high priests of death chosen to make others pay for the crime of being alive' i.e. they want to kill everyone who isn't them.

And then there are the nomadic wanderers such as Scorpion (Prete) and Nadir (Williamson) who owe allegiance to no one but themselves, cruising the toxic landscape for purposes entirely their own. So anyway, basically the Templars ride around on shiny, modified go-karts raiding and pillaging whatever caravans they find, that is until Scorpion and Nadir get in the way, resulting in an all out, post apocalyptic blood brawl, the fate of all humanity hanging in the balance...or something like that.

One thing you have to understand before going into a movie like this is very rarely do they have a well-defined storyline. Usually the plot consists of a series of grabasstic events tied together in an awkward continuity that often makes little sense, but the hope is that the director had the good sense to load the film with a whole mess of exciting action sequences to offset this factor, to which there are some pretty good kill scenes (exploding craniums, etc.), but otherwise the whole affair was a rather tepid one. One scene featured the hero character, Scorpion, being dragged behind a vehicle with the intent on killing him, but since said vehicle was traveling at a speed of about 20 mph, his demise seemed highly unlikely. There's one scene that really made me laugh in that Scorpion, having a showdown near the with the main baddies, blasts one of them in the face, the end result being much like that of what one would see in a cartoon in that of an antagonistic character encountering an explosive device, said device detonating, and the character subsequently appearing charred and blackened. The main character of Scorpion was pretty listless, basically a poor apeing of Mel Gibson's Mad Max, with a dash of Clint Eastwood's the man without a name characters in his early westerns. Scorpion travels around in a modified (modified meaning goofy, useless tubing extruding from the hood, and a giant, transparent plastic bubble attached to the roof which glows with a sickly green light at night) muscle car, complete with weaponry cast off from a James Bond film. I think he was meant to be a dark, brooding figure with a sympathetic side, but he came off as a poor amalgam of characters seen in other, better films. And then there's Fred Williamson...the gung ho warrior, riding around in a rocket car that looks like it has a top speed of about 30 mph, firing explosive tipped arrows, garbed in what appears to be an outfit leftover from a homersexual gladiator movie (nice golden codpiece, Fred). And I agree with a fellow reviewer...the worst character was that of the slingshot toting' kid mechanic with the toothy, idiot grin. Oh how I desired to see something bad happen to him...I very rarely wish harm on real individuals, especially children, but characters in a movie are fair game, especially one as annoying as he was...as far as the bad guys go, there's the leader of the Templars, named the One (Eastman). He does all right, if you like your cinema fraught with ham, but he seemed unable to control his subordinates, specifically his lieutenants, as they were regularly disobeying orders with the intent on taking his position. The Templars, as a whole, were hardly menacing (a great many of them got murderlated during an opening sequence where they were raiding a relatively passive encampment of survivors), and a later sequence, one where they're torturing a captured Scorpion, confirmed my inferred beliefs towards their preferences towards the love we dare not speak. Some scenes of interest...watch as Scorpion has an intimate interlude in a transparent bubble tent with a rescued damsel with giant hair, and Fred Williamson's character spies on them from a distance...I guess in the post apocalyptic future, you get your kicks where you can find them. Another sequence involves a Templar with a purple mohawk suffering a severe case of the road rash...so very satisfying. The entire movie appears to have been shot in and around a vacant quarry, which was a let down as I was expecting the decaying remnants of once great cities as the backdrop, or, at least the hint of such...derelict automobiles set of fire didn't convey the sense of a post apocalyptic setting but rather a poorly secured junkyard haunted by pyromaniacs. Another aspect I found entirely annoying (besides the kid) was near the end the Templars ran off to raid a rather large encampment, to which we saw none of the ensuing carnage, but only the aftermath...a letdown, to say the least. There were fairly copious amounts of gooey violence, and there is some fun to be had here, as long as you know what you're getting yourself into...

Mediablaster/Shriekshow provide a good-looking widescreen (2.35:1) print, enhanced for 16X9 TVs, on this DVD, but I had a real problem with the Dolby Digital 2.0 Mono as it was very soft, despite my raising the volume. In some scenes I couldn't even hear the dialog (perhaps that was for the best). Special features include a commentary track with director Enzo G. Castellari, an interview with Fred `The Hammer' Williamson, a washed out theatrical trailer for the film, and trailers for other Shriek Show releases like Duck! The Carbine High Massacre (2000), Hell High (1989), 1990: The Bronx Warriors (1982), and 2019: After the Fall of New York (1983). I would have given this release three stars on the virtue of its schlock value, but it lost a star due to poor audio.

Cookieman108

By the way, in the post apocalyptic future, if you're having trouble with your automobile due to engine problems, check under the hood for body parts...just a word of advice. Also, there are a couple of separate DVD releases of a film titled Warriors of the Wasteland available...it's the same film...I'm unsure the quality on those DVDs, though.

5 out of 5 stars Calling all cheese lovers!.......2005-04-11

God, I love these cheesy Italian post-apocalyptic actioners! I can't get enough of the lousy special effects, the ludicrous dialogue, the ham-fisted action sequences, the outrageous costumes, and the supremely bad dubbing! I owe Media Blasters a kiss on the cheek and a pat on the back for digging these clunkers up, cleaning up the picture, and transferring them to DVD with scads of extras. They haven't released very many of them, about three so far I think, but it's obvious they will likely release more in the future. The one I'm waiting for is David Worth's "Warrior of the Lost World," a movie so bad that the team from MST3K viciously harpooned it. Until that glorious day arrives, however, I content myself by watching films like "The New Barbarians." This is the latest Media Blasters contribution, a movie that contains nearly every element we've come to expect in an Italian post-apoc flick, namely all of the abovementioned traits plus Fred Williamson and George Eastman. The director is none other than old favorite Enzo G. Castellari, a man who needs little introduction to fans of this and nearly every other Italian exploitation genre of the 1960s, 1970s, and 1980s. Oh yeah!

Sometime after the world went to heck in a hand basket, humanity struggles to survive in a harsh world. Well, I think it's humanity, but it might only be a bunch of dirty Italians in ripped clothing if this movie is any indication. Anyway, a group of harmless people picks up a radio signal hinting at some semblance of civilization, but when they try to discover its source they run smack dab into a gang of murderous thugs called the Templars. Led by One (George Eastman), these goons cruise around the countryside in tricked up golf carts while wearing uniforms consisting of shiny white padding and goofy helmets. Their idea of a good time is killing off groups of survivors, like the one above, because they don't think humanity should rebuild after the nuclear conflagration. Or some such nonsense. Anyway, their golf cart cruisers have lots of neat weapons that pop out at the push of a button and can lop off heads and blow huge, gaping holes in people. It looks like the Templars are pretty much unstoppable: they are well organized in a time of confusion, have a philosophy that they stick to, and they don't tolerate weakness even within their own organization.

Into this mix drives Scorpion (Giancarlo Prete), a sour faced hero with a Chuck Barris coif who drives a fancy car and doesn't like the Templars. With the help of his bow and exploding arrow carrying friend Nadir (Fred Williamson), Scorpion plans on defeating the Templars and making the world safe for humanity. This entails a lot of overdone car chases, exploding bodies and heads, some lovin' in a tent, and occasional visits to a kid who fixes up the car (Giovanni Frezza billed as "Young Mechanic"). If you've seen any of these films before, you know there isn't more to it than that. There's a big showdown where Scorpion, Nadir, and Young Mechanic make mincemeat out of the Templar baddies that is worth a laugh or two. And there's the requisite honeys roaming around in dire need of saving--in this case Alma (Anna Kanakis). You just know Scorpion will win the day. You just know One will bite the big one (pun intended). And you know as the movie shudders to a halt that you'll sit in open mouthed awe that a film like "The New Barbarians" not only got made but probably had a theatrical run somewhere back in the early 1980s. Hey, it's not impossible; I saw Joe D'Amato's "Ator" on the big screen during roughly the same time period.

What's not to love about this tacky sleazefest? Well, Giovanni Frezza comes to mind. He's the actor who played the annoying kid in Lucio Fulci's "House by the Cemetery," and he's grown no less irritating here. His dubbed voice and dumb laughter coupled with the idea of having him proficient in the art of deadly slingshot warfare tends to grate after, oh, two or three seconds. Aside from Frezza's grating presence, "The New Barbarians" consists of one belly laugh after another. The sound effects for everything from the vehicles to the weapons sound like something whipped up on a cheap Radio Shack keyboard. And everything makes a noise in this film, EVERYTHING. It's beep, blat, whee, whiz, and a thousand other sounds from start to finish. The future is, if nothing else, a rather noisy place. It's also a rather sadistic place as evidenced by what One and his fellow Templars do to Scorpion when they capture him. Whew mamma! Never, EVER bend down to pick something up around these guys! That scene'll stay with you long after the movie ends, let me tell you! Throw in tons of over the top gore and a rather effective drum and synthesizer score from Claudio Simonetti and you've got a great way to spend an hour and change.

Media Blasters always manages to find plenty of extras for obscure films, and the disc for "The New Barbarians" is no exception. We get an Enzo G. Castellari commentary track, a trailer, and bonus trailers for "Hell High," "Duck: The Carbine High Massacre," "The Bronx Warriors," and "2019: After the Fall of New York." The Castellari commentary is definitely the high point seeing as how the man tries to tell us what he tried to accomplish with the movie. Whether he succeeded or not shouldn't matter; this is a fun film that cheese lovers the world over should rejoice in. Definitely give this one a go if you like movies with a high crud quotient.

Isaac Asimov's classic science fiction story "Nightfall" posited a world bathed in perpetual sunlight because of its six suns, which are all in constant orbit so one is always shining. But once every 2,000 years or so there is an eclipse that throws the plant into darkness and drives people mad. Asimov is after a comparison of religious superstition and scientific knowledge here, centered on the poetic sense of awe evoked when darkness falls and the stars are visible for the first time. The present filmed version loses all the poetry, exacting science, and subtlety of its inspiration and adds instead the wooden, uncommitted acting of David Carradine (Kung Fu) as a scientist, hordes of Indian extras (it seems to have been filmed in Bombay), and some botched pyrotechnic battle sequences. Clearly the filmmakers lost their way from story to screen, opting instead for a Raiders of the Lost Ark feeling, with lots of lame action and adventure usurping the story's core concept. The Asimov story has garnered top honors in poll after poll, including one done by the Science Fiction Writers of America, and the packaging tries to capitalize on that cachet. Understandable, since this movie has nothing else going for it. --Jim Gay

1 out of 5 stars Based on the Title of an Isaac Asimov Short Story Minus the Idea . . ........2006-02-02

As the 'virtues' of this film have been well covered by previous reviewers, let me add a nasty tidbit of movie trivia. Incredibly, the 2000 version of "Nightfall" is NOT the first movie 'based' (whatever that word may mean when it appears on a movie screen credit) on Asimov' classic parable/intellectual horror story. A "cheapie" (cheaper than the 2000 version -- if that is even conceivable) version was released in 1988, directed by Paul Mayersberg, and starred David Birney, Sarah Douglas, Alexis Kanner, Andra Millian and died deservedly in the independent theaters after a one week run. (I actually comprised the entire audience at one showing in LA.) Contemporary reviews of the 1988 version have commented that the film seemed to have been written and filmed while the entire cast and production crew was stoned, one of four features that connects this version with the 2000 version, the second being that monumental effort was taken to expunge the film of any premise, plot, character or themetic similarities to Asimov's short story, the third that together these films do not merit one star, and the fourth, that they may be the first two of an inexorable twelve-year cycle of remakes (literary eclipses?) of the Asimov story, the next due in 2012. Would that the world of filmmakers learn from the mistakes of their feeble-minded ancestors . . .

1 out of 5 stars A heart-breaking rape of a masterpiece of fiction.......2004-09-01

If you are a fan of Asimov, or have read and liked either the short story or the novel - don't buy this DVD. It is perhaps the worst adaptation I could even imagine. You will find only heartbreak and disappointment here.

The story that this was based on is rightly known as one of the (if not THE) best science fiction story ever written. Asimov takes the reader into the mind of a culture and unfolds a mystery of epic proportion. The reader is left with just enough to keep the heart pounding and not enough to kill the interest in the next chapter. It is simply a masterful piece of fiction.

In my mind this story is worthy of a remake at the quality of Lord of the Rings. However, it seems to have been sold to a low rent film mill.

I was amazed that this story became very, very boring. Special effects were totally gratuitous and (sorry) stupid. Carradine is totally TOTALLY flat. His lines seemed more like dry runs or dress rehearsals than final cuts. Sometimes I wondered if he had just said "One take only guys".

It seemed like there was a pressure to turn this into some freakish, sword slashing, blood and guts action flick (by the way, the blood looked like Pepto Bismal folks). Nowhere is there evidence of the psychological reasons that this calamity within the story will happen. It just sort of happens.

I am usually very easy to please with my reviews. I can usually find good in most things. Rarely do I give such poor reviews (check my other reviews). However, I would not only like to give less than 1 star, I would also like to yell and scream at everyone involved in this production for having killed my hope of seeing this fine story put on film. I was horrified by the end product. I honestly don't even think they tried to do a good job.

At best it is a boring, nonsensical, disaster of a film - a very bad 'B' film. At worst it is an unforgivable rape of a beloved story. When given such an opportunity, to translate such an important work of fiction (and it -is- that important) I see it as a responsibility to treat it respectfully. Perfection is not required, but respect is.

3 out of 5 stars Not That Bad.......2004-01-06

No, it is not the classic story written by Asimov. In fact, it seems very loosely based on it. Apart from this fact, the movie is mildly entertaining and NOT the terrible anti-classic that most of the other people writing reviews seemed to think. Overall a decent movie, decently acted.

1 out of 5 stars Asimov's 'Nightfall': A Challenge In Reviewing.......2002-06-10

When I first read Isaac Asimov's short story "Nightfall", I was stunned and left gasping at its powerhouse of a closing. When I finished watching the filmed version, I was also stunned and left gasping--but for quite different reasons. All the mystery and beauty of the short story that sought to explain a millenia old phenomenon of a planet's first and last nightfall was not only lost in the movie, but even on a technical level of competence, from the wretched directing of Paul Mayersberg to the incompetent acting of David Birney and David Carradine, this movie quite unintentionally presents both a challenge and a dilemma to those whose job it is to pass judgment on its merits. For truly abysmal efforts like ROBOT MONSTER or PLAN 9 FROM OUTER SPACE, these efforts nevertheless retain the saving grace of something that clicks with the audience, whether that something be the excessive exuberance of John Barrows waving his arms in a gorilla suit from ROBOT MONSTER or the perversely androgynous heavy-handedness of director Ed Wood in PLAN 9 FROM OUTER SPACE. Even 'bad' movies can have a style of their own that comes into play usually late at night in a marijuana filled college recreation room. But what separates the fun of enjoyable bad movies from the torture of having to sit through garbage like NIGHTFALL is the deadening seriousness of the collective hands of all concerned from director to writer to actor. In such movies as this, there is nowhere to be found any lightness of attitude or just plain old fun. It is as if such films serve only to remind the audience that there are indeed moments in our lives that call for infinite patience while someone drives sharp needles under our fingernails. Yet, I do not want to have to pay for such dubious pleasure. With films like this one, I did.

1 out of 5 stars Not even worth the ONE STAR.......2002-03-13

Why was this movie even made? This is the type of movie that Holywood producers see and think "Well, if it was written as a book first, we might as well throw away the script now." It gives a bad name to movies based on books.

I have never read the original book, Nightfall, and have hardly touched any of Asimov's works, but this movie makes me want to keep away from any books by the "Renowned" and "Award Winning" author.

The movie was obviously filmed in India and uses locals as extras. The only people with lines are Caucasian except for the two "villains" who spend more time making faces while speaking than they do making any sense of the lines they have been fed. David Caridine has never been a good actor. The "Kung Fu" series I consider a pathetic excuse for a joke. The only good thing about this movie is the art on the DVD/VHS cover.

The leads are two caucasian women in mid-eighties clothing with bulky purses that contain laser-pistols. They use a modern telescopic camera lens on an antique telescope found in a cave; that would be laughable if they bothered to take a moment to exploit it a bit. Good or bad, not one person in this film is even slightly attractive. Whatever the producers of this film were thinking when they made it, or whatever they were on, it was really a huge waste of time and money.

Don't waste your money on this...

UPDATE!

I read the short story by Isaac Asimov and watched the movie one more time... Suffice it to say, my first impressions were correct.

In the original story, the people are on a planet that is surrounded by three suns and once every 3000 years there is a nightfall. The people are terrified of the dark and cannot even stand to pass through a dark tunnel for five minutes before going insane.

The casting, as I mentioned before, is horrible. The acting is... well... there's not much here to mention.

The movie tore apart what Isaac Asimov wrote (a suspensful thriller of a tale) and made it into a crappy wanna-be action flick that is about as fun as watching a toilet spin the dirty water down the hole in the bottom.

My apologies to those who have seen this movie, even though I had nothing to do with the creation of it.

My warning to all who hold a mild curiosity for this film. You may just find yourself agreeing with me if you take the risk and try to watch it...

Warrior woman Lana Clarkson (Deathstalker) survives the massacre of her little village (on the eve of her marriage to a tribal prince) and vows revenge. Surrounding herself with an estrogen brigade of female fighters, she makes quick work of the marauders before moving on to the city to lead the brewing rebellion against the evil king. Don't think for a second that this is about empowered women: every female character is raped or molested in the picture. Ostensibly directed by Héctor Olivera (Funny Dirty Little War), this silly, badly dubbed, shot-in-Argentina production is full of gratuitous nudity and slapdash but serviceable action and is enlivened largely by Clarkson's charisma and energy. Much of the marvelous music is cribbed from James Horner's lush Battle Beyond the Stars score. Clarkson returns in the sequel, Barbarian Queen II: The Empress Strikes Back. --Sean Axmaker

4 out of 5 stars Barbarian Queen - Uncut.......2007-04-30

If its the uncut version your after then look for VHS video copies, its not available, or was never put on DVD. The only available versions are the ones that were released by Vestron Video, all the other studios only have the cut version. There was only this one scene that was cut out which lasted about 2 mins and was a torture scene which showed the late Lana Clarkson tied up to a rack and then scissoring this torturer and pushing him in a vat of acid, and considering the rest of the film features limbs being cut off and breasts bouncing up and down all over the place, why the hell it was cut out is a mystery.
But as i first said the only way of getting the uncut version is looking for a copy for sale that's on VHS tape only (not DVD) and the studio name who released it is Vestron Video. Its rare and not easy to find, but worth owning if you can get it.

R.I.P Lana Clarkson

2 out of 5 stars "Bondage Scene" NOT COMPLETE!.......2003-01-15

I just got my copy of the DVD R-Rated version and yes the best parts of the bondage scene are missing. Why those edit happy bozos would remove the lower body scenes showing the actresses powerful legs around her captor and leave the breasts showing is beyond me. Since this scene is most appealing in the way the Original version first displayed it in 85, to take it out in my opinion degrades the movie entirely. I was completely dissapointed in this version of the movie. If anyone saw the unrated 1985 Vhs version you would know what I mean. Lana was the movie. Why remove it????? I have [not a] clue!!! Unsatisfied customer.

3 out of 5 stars For those looking to upgrade their VHS copy.......2002-08-28

There are two forms of the movie on VHS. The R rated one and the Unrated one. The DVD is of the R rated version. The only difference is in the Lana Clarkson bondage scene (which, if you ask me, is the best scene in the movie). Something is missing in the R rated version. Benefits to getting the DVD? Immediately go to your favorite scene. On top of that, the picture clarity is much MUCH better than your old beat-up tape.

About the movie? Well, I'm about as big a cinema snob as you can get without being a professional film critic. I love the classic film-makers. Kurosawa, Kubrick, Keaton, Ford, Wilder, Hitchcock, etc. But I really like this movie. It is one of the best B movies out there. What's so great about a B movie? I think it's intent. B movies are obvious. They know exactly what they are and what they can do. They are there for a little action, a little adventure, some blood and guts, some T and A. They don't try to be anything more than that. That's why they are my guilty little pleasure.

You want a good B movie? Get this one, if you can. But if you have the unrated VHS, you might want to have second thoughts about this purchase. But then again, it's 10 bucks. Why not?

4 out of 5 stars Beautiful BAD Movie.......2002-03-18

I would say that this movie is ... good. This is definitely going to keep u watching from beginning to end as u count the number of times the actresses are [exploited].

3 out of 5 stars SWORD OF FUN.......2004-07-25

Sword and sorcery films are either good or awful. Or so awful they're good. BARBARIAN falls into this latter category. While muscleman Michael O'Hearn fits the barbarian role quite nicely, the poor former Mr. Universe couldn't act his way out of a strangehold. The women's roles are typical of the 60s gladiator movies, either tough as nails or beautiful and brainless. Filmed somewhere in or near Russia, the film fortunately, doesn't look too cheap. Martin Kove, a perennial favorite of video films, has a fun time playing the cruel ruler. The cast of females are unknown (at least to me), but nary a one will ever hit the Kristy Swanson or Bridgette Wilson level of excellence (did I Say that??). So many plot holes, but in a movie like this, you just want to see fights. They're all staged pretty tepidly and the climax is anticlimactic, but if you liked DEATHSTALKER, you'll probably enjoy this unintented companion piece.

4 out of 5 stars Not great, but still enjoyable compared to much worse movies.......2004-03-26

The story in this movie is about a fight for the possession of the three main symbols of the Indo-European civilisation, the sword (symbol of the warrior caste), the cauldron (or cup/graal, symbol of the priestly caste) a talisman of life (symbol of the caste of working people), which were possessed by Indo-European kings. In the movie, these three symbolic objects possess magic power.

This is certainly not a very good movie like Excalibur, Conan the Barbarian or Dragonslayer. The acting is poor, some of the characters are dubbed, some are not (at least there is some talking), the story may not always make entirely sense. For example, why is it so easy for Kane (the main character, Michael O'Hearn. who has as many muscles as Schwarzenegger) to retrieve the magic sword out of the cave where it is hidden (you would have expected some dragon or a fairy to guard it)?

But things are relative, I have just watched Red Sonja (starring Scharzenegger and Nielsen), and that movie has a terrible story, a cast of only about ten actors, no acting, hardly any talking except for an unsupportable child, very poor costumes and decors, I really had no fun at all watching it (see my review on amazon). By contrast, Barbarian will offer you many actors, including various kind of warriors and weapons, plenty of gorgeous women, authentic castles (the movie was filmed in Russia or the Ukraine, I don't know exactly) and decors, many nicely worked out costumes (not speaking of those of the lowest class, which is at least present, giving some realism to the movie), and, quite weirdly, a talking and walking funny teddy bear. So if you don't take that movie too seriously and don't expect something deep, you still can enjoy it.

2 out of 5 stars Poor version of Deathstalker (Literally!).......2004-03-08

This Roger Corman produced turkey was put out by New Concorde, the same company that did the bulk of the campy 80s Sword and Sorcery movies. Apparently their budget low enough that they had to use the Deathstalker's script, along with some of the old footage. Filmed in the Ukraine in some pretty nice old castles, the plot is literally exactly the same (three big magic items being collected by the bad guy sorcerer, sorcerer's tournament, etc.).

On the plus side, this allows both Barbie Benton and the Pig Guy to make a cameo as the orgy scene is replayed! While the acting is truly bad, at least the star, Michael O'Hearn, is ripped, it has a semi-recognizable bad guy (Martin Kove), and lots of hot chicks interested in exposing themselves (Just tops, and lots of 'em). On the downside, there is this sidekick "creature" thing with a Toys "R" Us lion costume on that has no role except to make truly annoying whining sounds. On the lighter side, this DVD actually has a "behind the scenes" featurette where the traitorous fighter friend talks about how this movie has "lots of emotion" in it (He really looks like he believes this!!!).

Bottom line, unless you like campy S&S movies, skip this. If you do have the "acquired taste" for these (I do), you'll like the old castles, the high T&A rating with lots of hot chicks and the cameo Deathstalker Pig guy appearance.

1 out of 5 stars Awful. Unless you are looking for a Cinemax late night binge.......2003-09-07

How could they even allow this movie to be made? Ridiculous fighting, lame affects and women that were demeaned like rode whores.
I will make my point clear; I am all for lovely female character, but the way they showed the women here, you may as well mark them down as bulgarian sluts and awful actors.

2 out of 5 stars Sword & Sorcery Retro-Cheese.......2003-07-17

The previews on this disc are for 'Barbarian Queen', 'Barbarian Queen 2' and 'Deathstalker'.
Does that tell you anything?
This little flick might have leapt right out of the 1980's. It's a low budget fantasy of the kind nobody has made in years.
There's a brawny hero, dozens of awkwardly choregraphed swordfights, cheap monster make-up, ultra-gratuitous nudity, and plenty of cornball special effects. B-movie stalwart Martin Kove has a hammy field day as the villain, but most of the performers should get credit for merely reading their lines with a straight face.
Is it good? That's kinda irrevalent. It has nice scenery and real castles, which is a step up from the 'shot-at-a-third-rate-renaissance-festival' look these things usually have. On the other hand, the score is jaw-droppingly bad, the climax is weak and there's way too much stock footage from 'DeathStalker'.
But is it enjoyable?
Well, if you get a kick out those dopey, shamelessly lurid sword & sorcery b-movies of the past, you're probably going to get a kick out of this unexpected modern update.
