If you can stifle the urge to laugh at its pastel unisex costumes and futuristic shopping-mall décor, this extravagant science fiction film from 1976 is still visually fascinating and provocatively entertaining. Set in the year 2274, when ecological disaster has driven civilization to the protection of domed cities, the story revolves around a society that holds a ceremonial death ritual for all citizens who reach the age of 30. In a diseaseless city where free sex is encouraged and old age is virtually unknown, Logan (Michael York) is a "sandman," one who enforces this radical method of population control (but he's about to turn 30 and he doesn't want to die). Escaping from the domed city via a network of underground passages, Logan is joined by another "runner" named Jessica (Jenny Agutter), while his former sandman partner (Richard Jordan) is determined to terminate Logan's rebellion. Using a variety of splendid matte paintings and miniatures, Logan's Run earned a special Oscar for visual effects (images of a long-abandoned Washington, D.C., are particularly impressive), and in addition to fine performances by Jordan and Peter Ustinov, the film features '70s poster babe Farrah Fawcett in a cheesy supporting role. Jerry Goldsmith's semi-electronic score is still one of the prolific composer's best, and Logan's Run remains an interesting example of '70s sci-fi that preceded Star Wars by less than a year. --Jeff Shannon

1 out of 5 stars Lame take-off from the book.......2007-08-26

Sorry, but since "Logan's Run" is one of my all-time favorite books, I was really disappointed in this rendition of it. Certainly you can't expect filmmakers to "film the book," but when a book is this special, you want the movie to be so, too. Michael York is just too old and Jenny Agutter, though a wonderful actress, just didn't fit in Jessica's skin. Though I saw the film back in the '70s and now have a copy of it, try as I might, I just can't seem to get past how it botches my vision of this fabulous book. Read the book! An extraordinary, visionary tale!

5 out of 5 stars Logan's Run is a stunning retro-futuristic classic........2007-06-08

Film about population & resource control in a future post-war setting.
Cool retro-futuristic sets; definitely 70's style fashion and decor. Great actors, they're all easy to identify with and are believable in their roles. I can put this movie on frequently and enjoy it every time; there aren't any lulls in the plot or "unnecessary fluff." I haven't read the book, from what I hear the movie leaves out/changes details- But if you haven't read the book, you obviously aren't going to miss it and it's still very enjoyable. It makes you want to read the book afterward to hear more about the world of Logan's Run.

I've heard this film compared to "The Island," which I have also seen. I really think Island is more like "Coma" with Michael Douglas.
Logan's Run is mainly about population/resource control out of necessity to maintain humanity, while "The Island" and "Coma" are about Money/Greed by showing how far people will go to live longer and what business'll do to make it possible for those that can afford it.
In Island & Coma, the motivation for keeping the 'secluded world of clones' is not for survival as much as the chase for immortality and the resultant immoral lengths people take to attain it.
Logan's Run is about the chase of truth and freedom, to escape from their isolated dome world to discover a deserted, isolated earth. Though they are killed at 30, it is humane in contrast to the mutilation of those in Coma/Island.

3 out of 5 stars Good fashion with out-dated effect.......2007-05-13

Can be considered a good movie in the 80s but special effect is too dated. I felt that the fashion sense is stylish though some people may disagree. The transportation and gun look fake. Still watchable but cannot compared to modern science fiction movie.

3 out of 5 stars Logan's Run.......2007-05-07

I enjoyed the movie! I saw it when it first came out when I was a teen. I remembered it , but not the details, so it was nice to see it again. It was interesting to see how they perceived the future to be.

4 out of 5 stars Good classic sci-fi flick.......2007-03-20

Good film. Dated though and the picture quality needs to be remastered. The acting is superb and no doubt lifts the film. They were so believable! If you love sci-fi flicks this one is a must.

Some Like It Hot gets a queer makeover in Connie and Carla, a lightweight comedy from the writer and star of My Big Fat Greek Wedding. In Billy Wilder's classic, Jack Lemmon and Tony Curtis teamed up in a male-as-female drag comedy, whereas here, writer-star Nia Vardalos goes a step further (and several derivative steps backwards), teaming up with Toni Collette as the titular heroines, playing women posing as men posing as women--kind of like Victor/Victoria with excess mascara. They witness a murder, and the killer knows it, so they hightail it out to West Hollywood, where (with the help of poodle wigs and garish cosmetics) they blend in with the performing drag queens at the Handlebar club, where queer makeovers are fabulously mandatory. Connie (that's Vardalos, to Collette's ditzy Carla) gets the hots for a drag queen's straight brother (David Duchovny), and even Debbie Reynolds pitches in to give a show that any gay crowd would love. There are some well-earned laughs along the way, but the whole thing feels like a sitcom we've seen before, which pretty much summarizes Vardalos's career to date. Vardalos has genuine comedic talent (and so does Collette), but it's adrift in this hash of old ideas. --Jeff Shannon

A thoroughly enjoyable movie. Sad and hilarious parts but most importantly was David Duchovny's role as locating and trying to get to know his estranged brother and the gradual understanding, appreciation and acceptance of his brother's lifestyle. David Duchovny did a superb job and for me this was the core/message of the movie. He loved his brother for who he was and the lifestyle he lived made no difference.

5 out of 5 stars 2 Girls impersonating ... 2 Female Impersonators !.......2007-04-09

I absolutely LOVE this movie. The plot was pretty original, and this movie was so overlooked, I decided to write a review on it.

The movie starts out with 2 girl friends, Connie and Carla, who's life long dream is to break into showbiz...and they fail miserably. Except for an act here and there at an airport playing to a dead audience...the girls careers are really not going anywhere.

About this time they witness a murder and have to leave town in a flash because the mob is hot on thier tails, they end up in LA
and happen upon a tryout for singers in a nightclub... but it is a gay nightclub, and the act they are looking for is female impersonaters!!!

Needless to say they need the money, so they dress up to look like drag queens to get the part, and they do!
They move into an upstairs apartment above the bar, and begin a double life, and it is sooo fun to watch!

Thier whole new circle of friends is female impersonaters, and they find it getting very nerve wracking staying "in drag" all the time so they won't be found out.

And to complicate a complicated situation even MORE, One of the girls falls for an impersonater friend's straight brother!!!
There are many small stories within the big story, and a wild chase scene that takes place toward the end of the movie, just adds to the hilarity of the whole movie.

All of the characters in this movie are so refreshing and likeable, and this movie is just a barrel of fun to watch. I reccomend it.

This film was god awful, such a shame as Toni Collette is a wonderful actress and she should fire her agent for 'finding' this for her. Still she was the best thing in this film.

Just dreadful.

5 out of 5 stars Alchemy.......2007-09-06

This is a great little movie, that somehow scaped me when it first came out. Perhaps this was due to lack of Hollywood big name recognition advertising. However, if you want what I would call a "cool" romantic comedy family movie, this would be it. Tom Cavanaugh and Sarah Chalke(of "Scrubs")acted their parts extremely well. James Barbour(veteran Broadway actor)ran away with his part, his comedic talent coming across phenomenaly, as well as being just the perfect actor for the part of "Dr. Love";he seemed to instinctively know just what to do in each scene to send across just the right humor, and funny it was. He was definitely one of the best assets of this movie. The rest of the cast was just as well cast, and did their jobs exceptionally, including the scenes with veteran actress Celeste Holm;nice to see an older actress get a nice role in a "younger set" movie.
Alchemy is one of those "how did this movie excape the popular radar" type of film undertakings. Director Oppenheimer should be given high kudos for bringing us this little treasure of a movie to enjoy over and over again.

2 out of 5 stars No Chemistry.......2006-09-20

"Alchemy," a 2005 flick starring TV's Tom Cavanagh and Sarah Chalke, ("Ed" and "Scrubs" respectively) tries to be one of those recent romantic comedies with a twist, the new angle here being that Chalke is unwittingly being wooed by a computer. Unfortunately for all concerned, the end result is an experiment gone bad.

Cavanagh plays the computer's inventor who, in order to keep his financing at a thinly disguised Pace University, engages in a competition sponsored by an equally thinly disguised Cosmo Magazine. The idea is to have an "average" woman, Chalke, courted by a man and a computer program, and then see which wins her affections. Never mind the obvious moral implications of this set-up, the problem is that this film lacks the one absolutely essential ingredient every romantic comedy MUST have: sympathetic characters. Sadly, instead of finding even one "someone" to root for, the audience finds only obnoxious and annoying people who engender no empathy whatsoever

The human suitor, by way of example, is played by James Barbour, apparently doing his best Hugh Grant impression. Known as "Dr. Love," he is insufferable, self-absorbed, and actually tries to get the heroine in bed by assuring her of his superb sexual technique. For her part, Chalke's "Samantha" vacillates between the dueling personas of street smart Manhattan Ice Queen and slutty nymphomaniac. Cavanagh, the intended hero and the one who we all know is eventually going to get the girl, spends the first half of the movie playing a nerdy geek who wouldn't know what to do with a girl if he had one, and the second half hiding behind a Cyrano-like prosthetic nose and an awful French accent to help his computer's cause by giving Barbour a flesh-and-blood competitor for Chalke's affections. If none of this makes any sense, then you have a good sense of the movie.

The sad thing here is that this could have been a worthwhile movie if writer/director Evan Oppenheimer had given the plot a bit more thought, and was willing to give it more edge and substance. Already treading towards the edges of science fiction with his futuristically interactive computer program, "Jerry," Oppenheimer could have gone just a bit farther by taking a page from Star Trek: TNG and "Artificial Intelligence: AI," actually depositing "Jerry" inside the form of Cavanagh. The echoes of Pinocchio so successfully played by TNG's "Data" and AI's "David," could have been given a compelling twist here had Cavanagh actually BEEN "Jerry," instead of just his human proxy. That would have given Chalke something to REALLY think about when she realized that the "man" to whom she was actually attracted was, in fact, not a "man" at all, which would have been vastly better than the hackneyed the-truth-comes-out-at-the-altar-rail scene lifted out of "Four Weddings and a Funeral,' and deposited here in a schlocky, goofy sequence (complete with Russian Orthodox priest in a fake beard) too broad for even vaudeville.

But that would have required some thought and, if the "behind the scenes" feature on the DVD is any indication, Oppenheimer was having far too much fun playing director to give any real thought to quality or to telling a compelling story.

Very very very very bad.

I can only imagine the actors/actresses/crew involved in this uninspired bit of trash must have each thrown up between takes.

It's honestly that bad.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderfully charming!.......2006-02-02

We saw this movie on ABC Family, highly recommended for (almost) all ages. I'd say it's great for adults and teenagers, can't really say for younger than that. But it's very funny, very well-made. And the acting is terrific -- Tom Cavanagh, Sarah Chalke, James Barbour, Nadia Dajani, all great! Will be a very pleasant surprise to people who know Tom and Sarah from "Ed" and "Scrubs" -- they're both capable of a lot more complexity than you might have guessed!
