'Asteroids: Deadly Impact' explores the history of asteroid and comet strikes on our planet and speculates on what future consequences we might experience when (the law of averages are we will be hit again someday) that impact occurs. Interviews with experts on heavenly bodies and our solar system reveal interesting information regarding our ever changing galaxy.
'Volcano: Nature's Inferno' is an excellent documentary on the massive and awesome display of incredible power harnessed by the earth. Volcanologists are followed to various areas of the globe where they research, report on, and study some of the earth's most active volcanoes. There is really impressive footage of lava flows, eruptions, landslides, and avalanches. A bonus feature on this disc is 'Into the Volcano' where a seasoned photographer and his crew venture close to active volcanoes and craters and record amazing footage.
The last and most interesting disc in this collection, in my opinion, is 'Nature's Fury'. Here is a no holds barred look at earthquakes, hurricanes, tornadoes, and floods. The overwhelming power and devastation of these natural disasters have to be seen to be believed and it is truly astonshing in almost all cases. This disc documents Mother Nature releasing her fury in locations throughout the globe and how science is working today to better understand what causes these disasters to happen and how we can better prepare for it. Two bonus programs on this disc are 'Tornado Hunters' and 'Lightning Strikes', both are interesting and offer decent material.
All in all, National Geographic has produced a nice collection here that doesn't disappoint. The DVD footage is very clear and impressive and each disc offers Dolby 5.1 Surround which sounds really good. If there is any down side at all, it may be that more footage would have been nice of the natural disasters (tornadoes, hurricanes) and that is my reason for only 4 stars. Still, for the asking price, this is a worthwhile purchase if you enjoy this subject material. Recommended.

A TIRELESS FIRST LADY.......2000-11-26
Orphaned at an early age, rejected by relatives who thought she was ugly, and very shy, Eleanor Roosevelt's prospects for the future looked dim. Even her marriage to her distant cousin, Franklin, wasn't great. She was dominated by her mother-in-law and he was a womanizer. What could the future possibly hold for such a plain woman?
Eleanor Roosevelt surprised them all! Biography gives a wonderful review of a woman coming into her own sense of self. Eleanor redefined the role of the First Lady. Her deep caring for people, love of politics and tireless energy made her the equal of her husband. The two formed an alliance which made them partners in politics but gave them seperate social lives. Eleanor served as Franklin's emissary as she traveled around the world explaining his programs and finding out the needs of the common person.
Biography reveals the tensions in the marriage, their intimate lives with other people,Eleanor's emerging independence and her political awareness. She was more active in the political scene than any other First Lady. Although she was the representative of her husband, she also had her own ideas and concerns that moved beyond the political realm.
Enjoy this film where you will see a woman who had a great impact on the political scene. Watch how she moved from a shy dominated woman to a self assured matron who was a force to be reckoned with in her own right.

"Kurtwood Smith's triumphant return to the big screen" -- Ain't It Cool News. In HARD SCRAMBLED Kurtwood Smith (RoboCop, That '70s Show) stars as Bruisin' Benno, an ex-prize fighter and now short order cook at Alice's Diner in what Kevin Thomas of the Los Angeles Times calls a "powerful performance." On the night of the diner's 25th anniversary, Alice (Beth Grant, Donnie Darko) has an "accident" that thrusts Benno's surrogate family into jeopardy. Benno, busboy Scotty (Eyal Podell, The Young and The Restless) and bumbling deliveryman Joe (indie vetran Richard Edson, Stranger Than Paradise), are thrown into a three-way boxing match peppered with razor blades, low-blows and sucker punches. Full of twists and turns, you'll be kept guessing up to the last frame. This award winning indie film has been packaged with a second dvd on making your independent film. This dvd includes more than 20 tutorials on directing, writing, producing, and editing your own movie. The Washington Post calls this bonus DVD "...a must for would-be filmmakers."

Hardhitting Indie Character Study.......2007-07-08
David Scott Hay's HARD SCRAMBLED is an example of the kind of film we should be seeing more of - crisp, dramatic, edgy work with unusual character dynamics and seasoned actors given a chance to really show what they can do. Hay is an accomplished playright, and this kind of work is common for the stage, where the almighty dollar isn't so concretely the focus of every decision. In movies, however, it all too often is, which is a shame, because it prevents us from seeing more movies like this. HARD SCRAMBLED is what indie film SHOULD be, the off-broadway equivelent for Hollywood.
I probably should point out that my praise is solely for the film. The second disc of documentaries is pretty dry and dull, but moreover almost exludes the writer/director and seems to serve as a piece of shameless self-promotion for the producers, who take credit for everything good and blame David Scott Hay for every mistake.
So forget the "film school in a box" bonus junk. See HARD SCRAMBLED for itself.

Come on, it's funny!.......2007-01-17
We all know this movie isn't going to win any awards but come on! Lighten up! We all know why we watch these kinds of movies...and it isn't for special effects. haha. If you like cheesy movies with a good amount of sex in it, you'll like this one. If nothing else, you'll get a good laugh.
PSYCHIC STINKER.......2005-03-27
This so called psychic thriller is no more than a soft porn attempt to show off siliconized breasts and hairy male butts. Now if that's your cup of tea, then drink this one in. But if you like your "b" movies a little more tasteful, RESTLESS SOULS is not for you. A newlywed couple on their way home from the wedding have car trouble and seek help in an apparently abandoned house. Now who in their right mind would stay in a house like this, where everything seems "just planned" for them? Needless to say, the place is haunted by the spirit of a Civil War general who made a pact with the devil in order to assure the South's victory. Of course, we know the South came out on the losing end, so why does this ghost want to keep his pact with the devil by having a virginal woman conceive the devil's offspring? He says he wants to get vengeance on all those Union Southerners who betrayed him? Oh, joy!!! The psychic "professionals" include a stern professor; a somewhat laidback professor of some kind who can touch things and see what happened and will happen; a telekinetic young sexbomb and another sexbomb who lures the ghosts in for a last seduction. The highlight (?) of the movie is the telekinetic masturbation and oral sex scenes that save the day. Yuck, this movie is so unabashedly stupid and its attempts at eroticism are miserably executed. Avoid or buy some stinkypoo remover when you're done with this one!
Uh, Hello?.......2004-08-03
"lecudedag" was right with his description, but come on! This movie is great. It's cheesy, sure. Why is that a bad thing? What do you expect from movies like this? Movies like these aim to be cheesy. Most people know this going in.
The petite girl mentioned is Ahmo "Amy" Hight. She does have fake breasts, but they're not freakish or anything. If you have ever seen the movie "Hotel Exotica", she was the younger sister. IMHO, she's hot. I think she used to be a gymnast. You can tell. ;-)
If you like late-night Cinemax films, you'll probably like this. If you like the "Sex Files" films, you will most likely love this. At least rent it if you're skeptical.
Give it a rest!.......2003-07-11
Restless souls is the story of 'erotic possession'. A young married couple are lured by strange circumstance to an abandoned hotel.
The 'virginal' bride, petit as she is, has the most faked boobs - probably a wedding-present from the in-laws. She is seduced by an evil spirt - some kind of throwback from the US Civil War. She vanishes, and her hubby calls in a team of ghostbusters to rescue her... only they all have sex a lot as well.
Very little plot, saved only by some nice looking nude women - but not worth the purchase price.

Customer Reviews:
Beautiful visuals carry this Korean WUXIA fantasy epic..........2007-07-02
The RESTLESS(aka: Jeong-Cheon) is the latest in South Korea's foray into the Fantasy- epic-romance/WUXIA Swordplay genre. This fantasy-adventure can definitely charm the viewer because it looks amazingly beautiful. The set designs are superb and the action is very entertaining.
Jung Woo-Sung(Musa the Warrior) is Gwak Yi, a former Chuyongdae(Royal Demon hunters) who after an encounter with demon-hybrids to protect a village, unexpectedly finds himself in Mid-Heaven, a pseudo-Buddhist holding where deceased souls gather to wait 49 days for their eventual reincarnation. There, Gwak Yi meets So-Hwa(Kim Tae-hee), a heavenly deity who is assigned an important task. So-hwa must deliver the so-called "Holy Stone" to the "Pool of Reflection" in order to prevent evil-doers from making a mess of the balance between Earth and Heaven. Noble and fearless, Gwak Yi enlists in Son-Hwa's cause immediately but he has his own hidden motivation.
Son-hwa is a dead ringer for Gwak Yi's former love Yon-Hwa, who he failed to protect from an untimely death. Actually, they are the same being, Son-hwa is a "Chuneen", whose a deity with no recollection of their past life on Earth. This complicates matters for both Gwak Yi and Son-hwa even further when Gwak Yi's former comrades(led by Hur Jun-ho)as a "Chuyongdae" are the ones who threaten the stability of Mid-Heaven. Meaning that in order to help Son-hwa, he must once again send his former comrades(to whom he owes a debt of honor) in the earthly plane to suffer a second death.
People who love SFX-laden epics will no doubt embrace "The Restless". There is plenty of action and they are very enthralling, thanks to the top-notch visual effects and awesome fight choreography. Highlights include a cool forest fight, and the very awesome epic finale, where Gwak Yi takes on about 10,000 demonic warrior spirits all by himself.(Azumi and Casshern, eat your hearts out!). The CGI effects are well-done and is sure to impress PS3 fanboys.
The story itself is not very original, but quite bearable. It is about Love and Hate, promises and loyalty, good and evil. The costumes and set designs may remind audiences of Tsui Hark's "Legend of Zu". The film's main WEAKNESS may be that the plot/characters may have a difficult time connecting with some viewers. The two leads do a decent interpretation of their characters. Jung Woo-sung suits the character of Gwak Yi, while lovely Kim Tae-Hee fills the screen with her charisma.
I bought the KOREAN (region-3) 2-disc Special Edition when it came out a month ago. Korean released dvds have such good presentation, which is why it's no wonder they're expensive. Great DVD from CJ Entertainment.
Take note that dvds made in Taiwan(like the unofficial ones circulating in Amazon)may be compressed in a way that may freeze in most stand alone players. They are encoded with no region coding to fool U.S. players.
PICTURE: 2.40 ratio Anamorphic Widescreen. The video transfer is phenomenal, sharpness and detail is awesome. Colors are very vibrant and the flesh-tones are very good. No complaints.
AUDIO/Subtitles: 5.1 Dolby Digital-Ex and DTS-ES Korean Language track. The sound is POWERFUL(especially on DTS), the channels are very nicely separated. English Subtitles are well-timed and translated.
EXTRAS: Music video, commentary, "making of", Behind the scenes, trailers and more.., unfortunately there are no subtitles in most of the docos.
CLOSING REMARKS:
The Restless may not be wholly original but it is a very well-made feature. You can really tell that they spent most of their budget in the visual effects, costumes and set designs. It is worth seeing and is a quite entertaining. Fans of Wuxia Swordplay epics will definitely embrace it for the action, if not, for it's beautiful visuals.
RECOMMENDED!
A real let down..........2007-06-21
***************Mild Spoilers********************
I have to say I was fairly disappointed with The Restless. Having read a wonderful review about it, and an interesting synopsis, I was hoping that this movie would be as good as my favorite Korean epic, Musa.
The story focuses on Yi Gwak, a demon slayer who is poisoned by a group of villagers who intend to kill him and collect the bounty on his head. He manages to escape, and passes out. He wakes up alive, but in Midheaven, the place where souls go and stay right before reincarnation. There, he meets a white reaper, who resembles his long dead wife. The plot gets complicated when his ex-squad of dead demon slayers show up chasing after the wife. Apparently she has something they want.
Unfortunately, the interesting plot is just about all this movie has going for it. The two lead actors were kind of dull and had no chemistry. Dare I say the acting even borderlined on bad? The fight scenes were redundant and cliched. They were all typical of your average Wu Xia films. The female lead tries to fight, gets overpowered and the hero runs in to save her... not once but SEVERAL times. In fact, in ALL of her fight scenes that's how it ends up. And the ending has the obligatory one man against a gazillion soldiers that he cuts through with relative ease. And some parts of the films just flat out DRAGGED. The dialogue was quite boring, leaving the characters very two dimensional.
That being said, the special effects were pretty. There was even one memorable and touching scene of a close up of the hero's friend as he dies, turning into this burning paper.
But unfortunately, special effects alone can't carry a movie.
So needless to say, I'm still searching for that wonderful Korean epic that will blow Musa out of the water.

Customer Reviews:
Great for family fun too!.......2006-03-22
I'm a soap fan, but even my husband loved it. We then had friends over and insisted on watching it again for us, and for them to see...did this with several friends. And they all loved it and laughed! After having worked in the television advertising business for 18 years, I could really relate..Also with the driving in Los Angeles. That dummy sure looked inviting, and even the bum! Clever Clever Clever! A must see.
Waste of Money.......2006-03-20
While I am a great fan of many of the talented people in this movie, Carpool Guy was a great disappointment. I've seen the quality work all these people do and I feel this was not really the actors fault, but the lame writing. It is supposed to be a comedy and that did not come thru at all. It had a good premise, and could have been so much more. Applause to Corbin Bernson for using his Mom in the film, but her speech is difficult to understand.
Carpool Guy.......2005-12-07
My daughter and I enjoyed the movie. It was fun seeing so many familar faces in the movie. I hope they make another.
Carpool Guy.......2005-11-17
Soap operas and those who star in them are often unfairly stereotyped. Yet, well known entertainers from primetime and film like Carol Burnett, Elizabeth Taylor and Julia Roberts are admitted soap fans. There must be more to daytime than meets the eye, right? Carpool Guy answers that question with a resounding, "Yes!" It's a highly entertaining and hysterically funny movie. Everyone can identify with the plot (especially if you are at all familiar with the advertising industry) and there's something here for everyone to enjoy.
The cast of characters perfectly compliments the lead, Joel (Rick Hearst), as he searches for the coveted balance between a successful career and family life. When a ladder-climbing opportunity inspires him to take some creative but drastic measures in order to compete, the movie takes you along for the ride with some surprising twists and a few life lessons along the way.
If you're not familiar with the stars from daytime, I urge you to haul out the popcorn, sit back, relax and check out some outstanding performances. Rick Hearst is well cast and on the money as Joel Goodman, a character everyone can embrace and relate to! There are hysterical performances by Tony Geary, Kristoff St. John and Jeannie Cooper, just to name a few. Additionally, the DVD contains some fascinating and funny extra sections about the making of the movie. I hope that Carpool Guy is the first of many Corbin Bernsen's projects showcasing daytime talent. If so, there's a lot to look forward to!
Don't miss this one.......2005-11-08
What a fun, good time movie. Excellent production quality, good story, my favorite actors, a terrific director. Wish Nancy Lee Grahn and Wally Kurth had been in it, too. Hope this gets wide distribution so non-soap people can enjoy it and see the amazing range of talent on daytiime TV. More, Corbin, more, please!

This gentle, modern-day fairy tale explores a family trying to recover from a father's death. Katie is a combative 12-year-old; her brother Simon is almost mute; their mother desperately needs time to rebuild her life. She takes the kids to visit their dad's mother in Newfoundland where Grandmother Lydia (played with grounded depth by Marsha Mason) tells Katie she understands that she has "to stay angry or you'll forget him." Lydia says that "some people have the gift of seeing," and Katie and Simon prove her right when they meet Charles Nungesser and François Coli, historical French aviation heroes who disappeared trying to beat Lindbergh across the Atlantic in 1927. These lost souls repeat their fateful crash into the swamp every time the fog comes in. Katie realizes they must finish the flight to enable their escape to heaven and begins the improbable task of raising their plane from the deep. The antagonistic relationship of the aristocratic and pompous Nungesser and his kindly navigator is portrayed with picaresque charm by the charismatic Lothaire Bluteau and the humanistic Michel Monty. Nungesser bemoans being beaten by a "mailman," while Coli mourns the loss of his wife and child. Resurrecting L'Oiseau Blanc helps Katie interact positively with people and develop friendships. By the magical climax, she learns what inspired her father to be a test pilot. --Lloyd Chesley
Customer Reviews:
Another "Groundhog Day".......2007-08-10
This is a paste from my IMDB review of the VHS tape. I am *so* happy that this is now on DVD. After publication of my review I was contacted by a French fellow who was researching the flight:
Shown on Showtime as "Restless Spirits," this is a fine tale of a pair of aviators flying from France to Newfoundland trying to be the first to cross the Atlantic. They crash in an odd fog and every time that fog reappears they crash again with no memory of the previous crashes.
At the time of the story it is sixty years later and they don't know that Lindbergh won the prize for the first crossing and they don't know they are ghosts.
The protagonist is the 12-year-old Juliana Wimbles playing Katie who finds them and figures out both their problem and the solution while they help her come to terms with her father's death in a test plane crash and with her mother's new romance.
I thoroughly enjoyed this movie and expect to view it over and over just as I see such similar movies as "Groundhog Day," "Somewhere in Time," and "Time at the Top" over and over.
A nice little movie.......2006-09-24
Restless Spirits is a nice Canadian movie, but it did not have an enormous budget or well-known cast (apart from Oscar-nominee Marsha Mason.)
Basically, a girl in 1997 discovers crash-landed French aviators from 1927 on a foggy night, and is the only one who can see them. She helps them recover and repair their airplane so they can continue the quest to be the first men to cross the Atlantic in a plane (their attempt was 2 weeks before Lindbergh's).
The actors playing the historical characters of French aviators Nungesser and Coli were very good and entertaining, and frankly, their interaction was the best part of the movie.
The other plot aspects of the movie (girl not getting along with mother, etc, and rocky friendship with a local boy) were OK. The lead actress, who was quite good as well, seemed a couple years older than her character's 12 years, but that is typical movie casting.
This is like a low-budget Disney movie (but not too sweet), so it is pretty safe for family viewing, though a young girl slips in one "S" word off camera, and a tee-shirt has an "E" logo and the word "Egotesticle" on it - which I found amusing.
My only "problems" were with the reality parts (such as 2 men lifting an engine weighing at least 350 lbs, etc, and some other "convenient" circumstances), but not the fantasy parts.
The movie is an interesting blend of drama, fantasy, and aviation history. Though I'm way past the Disney age group, I enjoyed it for what it was.
The kids loved this........2006-09-05
This Showtime movie is available on video and we rented it from Blockbuster. The story is well-written and wraps up nicely at the end...just what the kids are looking for. I was intrigued by the overlap of time periods and weaving the father's interest in aviation and the impact of his death on his daughter. My kids watched it twice and were moved both times.
Nice Family Film.......2005-12-15
David Wellington's award winning "Restless Spirits" is a family film much on the order of "The Boy Who Could Fly". The restless spirits belong to an actual pair of 1927 French aviators who aviation historians believe made a successful transatlantic flight two weeks before Charles Lindbergh did in May, 1927. Their names were Charles Nungesser & Francois Coli (humorously played by Lothaire Bluteau & Michel Monty) and the prevailing theory is that they crashed in a isolated area of Newfoundland.
These two ghosts are tangible and approachable, even friendly although Nungesser works hard to give an unpleasant impression. Adults looking for gore, scares, and atmosphere will be disappointed although the film does succeed at developing a decent amount of tension.
Juliana Wimbles does a nice job as Katie, a twelve-year-old who has not yet accepted the death of her test pilot father and whose mother has parked her and her younger brother at their paternal grandmothers while playing around in Europe with a new romantic interest. Marsha Mason plays the grandmother who has had little contact with the two children prior to this visit. She happens to live near a haunted pond and in the tradition of "Sixth Sense" Katie soon discovers that only she and her brother can see the ghosts.
Because of her father's occupation Katie has a natural bond with the two French aviators and figures out why they have not passed on. In 1927 they became lost in the fog and crashed into the pond, on foggy days they must repeat the events that led to their deaths. Katie enlists the help of Andy (Ben Cook), a young neighbor who has a crush on her. They work to restore the wrecked plane so the ghost's can finally escape the pond. Suspense is generated by the interference of Andy's nasty sister, and by the competition of two archaeologists who are trying to unravel the unsolved mystery of the doomed flight.
In the process Katie is able to finally come to terms with the loss of her father. She gains an understanding of death from the disparate reactions of the two aviators to their ghostly situation. Nungesser, the pilot, is upset about losing out on the fame of the first transatlantic crossing and embarrassed at crashing. Coli, the navigator/mechanic is crushed by the realization that he will never see his family again. Katie begins to understand that her father was a mix of these two sets of motivations. Pay attention to Katie's interactions with the two aviators because it is in this substitute father/daughter dynamic that the film transcends the ordinary ghost story.
This is a well scripted and pleasant film with a very original premise that the whole family should enjoy, but don't expect shock and horror.
Then again, what do I know? I'm only a child.
