Primer won the Grand Jury Prize at the 2004 Sundance Film Festival and has drawn repeat viewers eager to crack writer-director-star Shane Carruth's puzzler of a time-travel drama. Carruth, an engineer by training, plays inventor Aaron, whose entrepreneurial partnership with fellow brainiac Abe (David Sullivan) unexpectedly results in a process for traveling back several hours in time. The men initially use these rewind sessions to succeed in the stock market. But a dark consequence of their daily journeys eventually complicates matters. If this sounds like a very commercial, science fiction thriller, Primer is anything but that. Shot on 16mm for $7,000, the film has a tantalizing, sealed-in logic, akin to Memento, that forces viewers to see the fantastic with a certain dispassion. One may be tempted to sit through Primer again to more fully understand its paradoxes and ethical quandaries. --Tom Keogh

Really, it is. I don't understand it but I know it can be understood. Beautifully shoot. Amazing it was only made for $11,000. Lovely little piece of high quality storytelling working within massive limitations.

2 out of 5 stars Talky, choppy, boring film.......2007-08-19

The review by Donald DeBoer says exactly what I thought, so there's no point in my writing the same things. I couldn't put it better. The dialogue is realistic in structure and so boring that if you were hearing it in real life, you would tune out or walk away. I didn't know what they were talking about. I watched the film because I love time travel films and was hoping for something of interest. There was absolutely nothing.

2 out of 5 stars Good For Some Reasons But Bad For Many Others.......2007-08-02

I don't know why everyone is so generous with this movie. When I first watched it I immediately felt alienated by the dispassionate, choppy, and overly technical dialog. OK. So they look like real engineers who wear white dress shirts and ties but being a fly on the wall as they work together proves to be no more stimulating than watching a group of strange accountants struggling to file the same tax return. The characters are striking in their ability to talk more than they listen. Pay attention to the constant cross talking and interruptions where new and seemingly unrelated ideas are constantly introduced in a tech language most of us will not understand. Now add the fact that these characters talk to one another in subdued and dispassionate tones and you are left with dialog that doesn't stick and characters who come across as interchangeable and bland. I stopped watching after the first 15 minutes. Then I gave it another chance because I was intrigued by this concept of low budget high concept sci fi from an independent filmmaker. Finally the film began to take me into a more intriguing direction. The latter 2/3 of the film contains some fascinating ideas but this time the ideas become increasingly scattered, rapid, and choppy. The movie is good because it is an amazing effort given it's stark minimal style, the fact that it is a first time movie making effort from an engineer turned filmmaker, and it once again proves that a great concept can be introduced on a shoe string budget (e.g. Blair Witch Project). The movie is bad because the characters never engage you and the concept tangles upon itself before you've even had time to mediate or care about the first twist. Although the movie is little over an hour it feels quite long. It might have made for a stunning short film. All in all it is an admirable effort but not the great film that it could have been. If you watch the movie trailer you will see that it is better than the film itself. It has a slick, tight, and glossy look and begins by saying (1) Your needs: food, shelter, safety....check, (2) Your wants: friends, spouse, children etc.....check and (3) Your REAL wants: power, money etc. It is problematic when the movie only seems to keep us at level one. Friends and family are merely props in this film and the characters don't have enough passion for me to believe their heart is truly engaged in a quest for power etc. I guess that is all I have to say.

Primer

I started to give this movie 4 stars only because the sound is so bad you have to keep hitting rewind to get all of the dialogue. But considering the reward for actually putting forth the effort, 5 is still appropriate. I will not give a synopsis of the plot because it's been done by other reviewers, and anyway there's no good way to describe this completely unique plot. The point is that this movie makes you think, on many levels. I will NEVER get the mathematical/parabolic conundrum figured out, but as fun as it is to try, it's the moral and social ideas that are the most intriguing.

I've heard the movie criticized for lack of character development. Personally, I see this as a stroke of genius. Since I don't know Abe's or Aaron's backgrounds, they become 2 sides of the same "everyman" coin. When I look at Aaron, I am at first comforted and then gradually spooked to realize that he could be anyone--my next-door neighbor, or even myself. As for Abe, it wasn't until I really started relating to him that I saw his flaws. If you can see past the cool techie stuff, you'll be invited to take a look inside and think about why you do the things you do. We all need more of that.

5 out of 5 stars Not for the timid geek.......2007-07-15

If your I.Q. is less than 140, you will not like this film. That's not a jibe, that's a fact. If you are looking for explosions, aliens and anorexic big bosomed women, go elsewhere. The film rests on it's own merits, not on drama in the acting and visuals. Sci-fi as it would appear in real life. If you liked the movie PI, you will probably like this. Considering the 7000 dollar budget, this is excellent.

Product Description

Since Copernicus revolution, science has tended to grant less and less significance to both the earth and human life when weighed against the age and immensity of the cosmos. Not only doesnt the sun revolve around us, it turns out that our world is merely a speck floating in a dark backwater of one galaxy among one hundred billion others. And man, Darwin and his followers tell us, is a cosmic accident; the result of matter plus time plus chance. But a new revolution has been quietly taking place. Science is discovering more and more evidence for design and intentionality in the universe. And among the most fascinating of these discoveries is what has been called The Anthropic Principle: the idea that the universe appears to have been carefully engineered in order to produce carbon-based life forms and, yes, even man. In this fascinating documentary, eight world-renowned scientists grapple with the science and implications of this principle and conclude that Shakespeare may well have been right: There are more things in heaven and earth than are dreamt of in our philosophy. This 50 minute program features: Dr. Paul Davies, Professor of Theoretical Physics, Newcastle University Dr. John Wheeler, Professor of Physics, University of Texas, Austin Dr. David Deutsch, Professor of Physics, Oxford University Dr. Dennis Sciama, Professor of Astrophysics, Cambridge University Dr. Frank Tipler, Professor of Mathematical Physics, Tulane University Dr. Martin Rees, Institute of Astronomy, Cambridge University Dr. Michael Redhead, Professor of Philosophy of Science, Cambridge University Dr. Brandon Carter, Professor, Paris Observatory

2 out of 5 stars Intelligent design malarky.......2007-02-23

The Anthropic Principle is Intelligent Design writ large. Usually Creationists/ID proponents confine themselves to evolutionary Biology. Not so the scientists interviewed for this documentary. These are Professors of Physics, Theoretical Physics and Astrophysics.

After summarizing the history of astronomy and cosmology since Copernicus in about 2 minutes and, given the sterile mathematical depiction of such a pointless Universe, the "destiny" of human beings is described as "tatty." To call human life "tatty" because in the vast scale of the Universe we are insignificant is to underscore a meaningless point. It also denies the basic inherent value of human life regardless of the size of the Universe. But such a pejorative judgement based on the sheer scope of the Universe is precisely what the Anthropists intend to overturn. And in so doing restore to man his priviliged pre-Copernican status, a special creature at the very center of things. Mathematics, of course, cannot place a value on human existence. And so try as they might, these professors cannot make mathematics render up any meaning about the place of humanity in the cosmos. Most grating, however, is the fact that while they employ mathematics to demonstrate the meaninglessness of human existence, they also employ it to demonstrate that the Universe "must" be as it is in order to produce human life. That is called having one's cake and eating it.

Instead they resort to the ploy of ascribing intentionality to the Universe. These professors seem unaware that they are merely projecting human will and intention onto the impersonal physical processes of the Universe. Paul Davies, for instance, observes the "linkage" between the emergence of the human being and the size of the Universe and concludes that this precise size was required for life and therefore the Universe was purposefully designed and administered to allow for the conditions that allow for life. Which is more a belief than a scientifically provable hypothesis.

The basic Anthropic question is, "How important is mankind in the scheme of things?" But it is worth noting that the "scheme" is merely our construct, and mankind's importance even more so. There is no grand universal scheme in which we are vital participants. Other than this Earth, there is no grand scheme of things in which we might be important. As most astronomers and cosmologists believe that the Universe is teeming with life, it makes no sense to bemoan our current state of isolation or seeming lack of importance in the vast scheme of the Universe.

The underlying presumption of the Anthropists is that the Universe has a reason to be and that reason is human existence. The Anthropists make what they consider hay with the basic physical "constants" that allow for the formation of stable particles, etc. Using mathematics to defend the idea that there is an "order" and, indeed, a reason for the Universe to be (and be as it is), Prof. Sciama of Cambridge notes that if any of these numerical values were even slighly different, Poof! no Universe. But, so what. Maybe this Universe is just the metaphorical roll of the dice. Maybe there have been an infinite number of universes and this one happened to turn out this way. If there is a continuous cycle of birth and death (Big Bang/Big Crunch), then it is incredibly good fortune to be alive. "God" may not play dice with this Universe, but who is to say "he" didn't roll the dice with others that didn't work out quite as neatly. The "what if" is irrelevant in constructing an argument about the reasons why this Universe is as it is. It simply is that way. To posit, even implicitly, a purposeful designer who constructed the Univese as the reason for existence is to leap into theist speculation.

There are, according to this presentation, a number of subtle variations on the Anthropic Principle. The most extreme being the Participatory Principle which asserts that "It would be observers who bring the Universe into existence." This might also be characterized as participatory solopsism since without human observers there would be no Universe. This position is little more than an elaboration on the old conundrum: if there is no observer and a tree falls in a forest does it make a sound. According to eminent physicist John Wheeler the answer is no. And further, based on the ideas of quantum physics and Heisenberg's Uncertainty Principle, the forest itself doesn't exist without a human observing it.

One of the resident experts on the Anthropic Principle is Prof. David Deutsch of Oxford who is a proponent of the Final Anthropic Principle. Deutsch makes Arthur C. Clarke and Olaf Stapledon look like rank amateurs in his description of men like gods who are "destined" to spread across the vast reaches of space, know all there is to know, control all the known powers and, apparently, end up at the resturaunt at the end of the universe.

Finally, the documentary displays a quote from Fred Hoyle (he of the steady state Universe theory), to wit: that the stars in this Universe were "deliberately designed" to allow for the conditions conducive to the development of life. Which rather begs the question.

All-in-all, the Anthropic Principle is the attempt to cast modern cosmology into a medieval frame of mind wherein humans are quite literally the cause, the raison d'etre for which the Universe exists. We have a place in the scheme of things because without us not only would the Universe be pointless, but without a cause. The Universe, apparently, has a purpose and that purpose is us.

4 out of 5 stars A LONG-LOST TREASURE - FOUND!!.......2006-12-13

I heard about this years ago and spent more than a little time trying to track down a copy -- with no success. (Why the BBC drops so many of their productions I will never understand. They also did a great piece on one of my heroes, Charles Haddon Spurgeon, that appears to have also quietly dissappeared.) Anyway, I was thrilled to get my hands on a copy and find that is completely lives up to its reputation. As a Christian who is active in apologetics, this has quickly become one of my favorite tools. Note: I took away a star only because some people may be put off a bit by the datedness of the interviewees (it was produced in 1988). It is not so much their ideas (which are still extremely relevant) but their appearances! Proves the old maxim that great intelligence and an acute sense of style (check out the haircuts) don't necesarrily go hand-in-hand!)

      Description

Two young engineers, Aaron (Shane Carruth) and Abe (David Sullivan), work by day for a large corporation while conducting extracurricular experiments on their own time in a garage. While tweaking their current project, a device that reduces the apparent mass of any object placed inside it by blocking gravitational pull, they accidentally discover that it has some highly unexpected capabilities - ones that could enable them to do and have seemingly anything they want. Taking advantage of this unique opportunity is the first challenge they face. Dealing with the consequences is the next.
