Disney's 1959 animated effort was the studio's most ambitious to date, a widescreen spectacle boasting a gorgeous waltz-filled score adapting Tchaikovsky. In the 14th century, the malevolent Maleficent (not dissimilar to the wicked Queen in Disney's Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs) taunts a king that his infant Aurora will fatally prick her finger on a spinning wheel before sundown on her 16th birthday. This, of course, would deny her a happily-ever-after with her true love. Things almost but not quite turn out that way, thanks to the assistance of some bubbly, bumbling fairies named Flora, Fauna, and Merryweather. It's not really all that much about the title character--how interesting can someone in the middle of a long nap be, anyway? Instead, those fairies carry the day, as well as, of course, good Prince Phillip, whose battle with the malevolent Maleficent in the guise of a dragon has been co-opted by any number of animated films since. See it in its original glory here. And Malificent's castle, filled with warthogs and demonic imps in a macabre dance celebrating their evil ways, manages a certain creepy grandeur. --David Kronke

5 out of 5 stars Once upon a DREAM . . . Good & Dark Fairies, Kings & Princes, Fire Breathing Dragon & a Golden Beauty.......2007-06-16

Once upon a Dream, many moons ago, when I was a child; I viewed this Dark Disney Fairy Tale and became instantly mesmirized by all fairy folk and tales to be told. Dear Walt gave us little gals the imagined lore of pretty Princess's or Princess's to be. As well as the Tom boy in me, the warrior Princes with sword and shield fighting for the greatest cause . . . defending ones kingdom from evil overbearing forces.

My undying luv for the winged serpents of old - Dragons, is all given credit due to my favorite Walt Disney villian . . .
Malevolent Maleficent, considered a Dark Fairy (more suitable in Disney standards of the time than a witch) who transformed her being into the statuesque purple fire breathing dragon in the ending battle together with Prince Phillip and the delightful fairies; Flora, Fauna, and Merryweather to save the realm from darkness.

MALEVOLENT MALEFICENT, THE DARKEST FAIRY - notable quotes:
"The Forest of Thorns shall be his tomb!
Move through the skies on a fog of doom!
Now go with the curse, and serve me well!
Round Stefan's Castle, CAST MY SPELL!"

"She is indeed, most wondrous fair.
Gold of sunshine in her hair,
lips that shame the red red rose.
In ageless sleep, she finds repose.
The years roll by, but a a hundred years to a steadfast heart, are but a day.
And now, the gates of a dungeon part, and our prince is free to go his way.
Off he rides, on his noble steed, a valiant figure, straight and tall!
To wake his love with "loves' first kiss"! And prove that "true love" conquers all! AHAHAHAHAHA!"

SLEEPYING BEAUTY is most intoxicating, hilariously funny, beautiful artistry, classical music and captivating characters immortalized. Both an enchantment and fulfilling destiny, from a prickling finger to a long awaited magical kiss.

Other Disney's to see in the realm of Princess Fairy tales:
Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs (Disney Special Platinum Edition)
Cinderella (Two-Disc Special Edition) (Platinum Edition)

Walt Disney has been adored and admired by many generations since his beginning in the movie animation industry. Sir Walt has become a part of movie making history and his Disney kingdom will continue to grow, and for future generations, his legend will live on evermore.

LadyGray quote:
"The last in Sir Walts time, a Fairy Tale to be told;
The setting of the stage is a unique Dark Disney mold.
This adventurous stunning musical for all to see and believe;
A long quest to save a kingdom and release Sleeping Beauty free."

5 out of 5 stars One of the best.......2007-05-31

I purchased this DVD at a used bookstore for $14.95 and I was expecting it to be damaged in some way, but it wasn't!

Anyway, this is the classic Disney movie about a jealous witch, a beautiful princess, three bumbling fairies, a handsome prince, and the spell.

I highly recommend that everyone watch this movie with their children.

A+++

It took really long for delivery, however, it's a great classic and worth it! I'm glad that even though it was sent back into the Disney Vault, I was still able to get it on Amazon!

Yes, Virginia, there was a Sesame Street before the Age of Elmo. This 1993 collection highlights the role of music in the long-running series from Children's Television Workshop, and reminds us that such Jim Henson creations as Big Bird, Oscar the Grouch, Cookie Monster, and Ernie and Bert were once part of a true ensemble of Muppet superstars. Nothing against Elmo, of course: kids adore him and he makes enough appearances in this anthology (including the show-stopping "Happy Tappin' with Elmo") to keep today's tykes happy. Also included is Ernie's classic "Rubber Duckie" (really, who doesn't know the words to that?), Oscar's anthemic "I Love Trash," you-know-who's "C Is for Cookie," and Big Bird's Big Finale, a rendition of "Sing" that includes the entire cast. There are 27 tunes in all, and they don't all involve singing puppets: Ladysmith Black Mambazo turns up for one track, and the "Sesame Street Jam Session" includes some actual playing of instruments. --Tom Keogh

4 out of 5 stars Keeps my son's attention.......2007-08-27

My son is only 15 months old & not many dvds keep his attention. I took this with us on a road trip & I'm so glad I did. It kept his attention & he watched it over & over. He was glued to the tv! The songs are fun & the storyline is cute about finding the lala-ers. It has all sesame street characters singing various songs. I found myself singing the songs, they're so catchy.

4 out of 5 stars 25th Birthday Musical Celebration.......2007-08-22

I have always been a "sucker" with Sesame Street's programs and the characters, especially Elmo. In fact I bought this DVD album twice, the first one was purchased two years back for my Grandson, but forgot about it. Anyway I could always give it away as gift, to make other children happy.
Although the music selection is from the popular Sesame Street's series, it could have included some of the more popular children's songs. Anyway I am glad they included the song "Rubber Duckie" which is my favourite when first watch Sesame Street with my Son thirty years ago.
It is a good buy for the educational and musical program with some humour for the young ones.

4 out of 5 stars Format doesn't serve the content.......2007-07-27

I love Sesame Street. I love the music especially. I love every single song included in this collection. Unfortunately, the bare-bones production of this DVD makes watching these classic segments a mediocre experience for an adult.

This DVD doesn't have a menu, has awkward chapter markers, and has fuzzy video quality. Most disappointing, many of the included songs have been edited down to being merely clips rather than full songs ("Do the Rubber Duck," for example).

I hope that the Sesame Street: Old School Sesame Street - Old School, Vol. 1 (1969-1974) series of releases continues, so that I can see and share my favorite Sesame Street memories. The 25th Birthday DVD is an okay stopgap in the short term, but will not satisfy older and more fervent Sesame Street fans.

5 out of 5 stars Captivates my daughter - and makes me laugh!.......2007-06-13

I think this collection is wonderful - my daughter LOVES watching it - she is captivated when it's on. I have tried other shows, like baby einstein, Barney, disney, and so on - but nothing gets her attention the way Sesame Street does. I love it because it gives me a few minutes a day to do things around the house - like fold laundry, make bottles, do dishes, pay bills etc, etc. A MUST have, in my opinion!

5 out of 5 stars My toddler loves this video........2007-05-25

My toddler absolutely loves this video - from beginning to end, he's usually watching with a smile or playing and watching at the same time. Either way, the songs are a huge hit with him. And from a parent's perspective, plenty of stuff I remember enjoying as a child! (My hubby, too.) It's a good mix of songs, enjoyable to watch even as an adult. Definitely a video worth having.

No one loves the cold months better than acerbic fat cat Garfield, who thrives on a bounty of junk food and traditional meals in the delightful collection of musical-comedy TV specials Garfield Holiday Celebrations. "Garfield's Halloween Adventure" finds the portly hero and airhead-sidekick Odie the dog scrounging through owner Jon's attic to find perfect costumes, then encountering ghosts and ghoulies that seem a tad authentic. "Garfield's Thanksgiving" is a screwball special in which Jon harasses veterinarian Liz into being his Turkey Day guest. Trouble is, Jon is clueless about how to cook a big bird; fortunately, starving Garfield has the good sense to call in Jon's spirited grandmother for a culinary rescue. Grandma shows up, too, in "A Garfield Christmas," about a family get-together that covers all the nice holiday stuff and, of course, lots of bickering, pouting, and jealousy. As long as Garfield gets his Yuletide lasagna, however, all is right with the world. --Tom Keogh

5 out of 5 stars I love this!.......2007-09-12

I have to be honest, I only bought this for the Christmas episode. I watched that episode growing up and even had it recorded. I was thinking about it the other day, and then I saw this at Target. I watched the other two episodes and loved them, although I wish I could have seen the original Halloween episode someone had talked about(sorry I don't remember your name at the moment). Definately worth getting, because it brings suck good memories.

Fine artwork, classical music, and destinations around the world are the order of the day for the Little Einsteins, a group of musically-minded children who travel the world in their trusty rocket ship looking for adventure. Each of these three CGI animated adventures encourages viewers ages 2 to 7 to get involved by clapping along and promotes the development of careful listening skills and an understanding of basic musical terminology. In "The Birthday Machine," June, Leo, Quincy, Annie, and Rocket can't wait to construct a birthday machine, but their quest for parts takes them deep within Michelangelo Buonarroti's painting "The Laurentian Library" and then on a gondola ride through the canals of Venice where they chase and order specific melodic fragments from Johann Sebastian Bach's "Brandenberg Concerto Number 5." In "Go West Young Train," the group journeys to the American Wild West where they experience the art of Navajo basketry and the music of Georges Bizet while helping Little Red Train recover a bag of party supplies stolen by Big Jet. Finally, the group journeys around the globe from Seattle, Washington to the tropical rainforest of Henri Rousseau's "The Merry Jesters" and the ice floes of Antarctica in "The Birthday Balloons." Along the way, they pick out melodic fragments from Mozart's "Eine Kleine Nachtmusik" and recapture a handful of runaway balloons. The DVD bonus feature "You've Got a Mission" gives viewers a chance to pilot Rocket on their own mission to gather party goods. --Tami Horiuchi

3 out of 5 stars would've given this 5 stars except for one thing..........2007-09-04

My 2 year old loves this. She grew out of Baby Einstein and we bought her a few Little Einstein ones. She watches them all the time. We had to try to limit her DVD time everyday so that she has other things to do. But of all the DVD's this is quite educational (even for me as an adult!). The characters asked questions to viewers, guided them to imitate gestures and noises. I also like the real images in addition to cartoon images. For example, they flew over the real cities such as Venice or Seattle, and showed real animals like penguins.

My only complaint, and it's a big one, is that the kids are off tune. Annie (the blonde) is seriously off tune. It really bothers me when they sang together (that feeling is similar to someone who scratched a blackboard with fingernails). Complete dissonance in certain instances. At first I thought it was the composer of the tune, or believed it could just be my own problem and they were just singing with normal kids voice. But later confirmed with others that they were, in fact, out of tune. If they're trying to set examples for kids and teach them various things from fine arts to classical music to science, why not demonstrate by singing the tunes correctly?

5 out of 5 stars Daughter loves this...........2007-08-17

My 3 year old is a HUGE fan of the Little Einsteins. I picked up this DVD from my local library and my daughter watches it everyday. All the scenes are age appropriate for her and she loves the interaction with the chararcters. This would be a great purchase for preschoolers.

1 out of 5 stars One major flaw outweighs all of the good qualities.......2007-05-18

As a grandmother, I am always on the lookout for good, nonviolent videos for my two young grandsons. I was very excited when I started watching this one yesterday and thought I had finally found something good. The educational features are wonderful--world geography, introduction to classical music, physics, etc. However, in the second episode, "Go West, Young Train," I was absolutely sickened to see that the only villain in the entire DVD is a sneaking, thieving airplane that looks very much like a Blue Angels jet. This underhanded attempt to brainwash very young children into hating our military makes me furious. I had to explain to my very intelligent 3-year-old grandson that this is just a movie and when he sees airplanes like that, he needs to realize that their purpose is to serve and protect us, not to harm us as this one did, switching the track to make the cute little train plunge over the rim of the Grand Canyon. Parents, wake up! Know what your children are watching! I won't be watching these again, and it's too bad, because in all other ways, they are truly excellent.

5 out of 5 stars my 4 yr old loves it.......2007-05-14

This is a good Little Einsteins. The music is nice and they teach.

5 out of 5 stars This is awesome!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!.......2007-04-24

5 out of 5 stars Classic Dr. Suess that the child in all of us will love.......2007-05-12

I remember these videos from my childhood and now my kids are enjoying them too. My 2 yo son loves me to read the Cat in the Hat and Green Eggs and Ham over and over. I thought this would be a great visual addition to our regular reading and all three of my kids love it. Of course there are several more great stories on the DVD as well. A great way to celebrate the 50th anniversary of Dr. Suess. Plus, you can't beat Alan Sherman as the Cat's voice.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent DVD.......2007-05-08

I am an Elementary teacher and purchased this DVD to enrich my Dr. Seuss unit about rhyming, poetry and social issues. The animation is wonderful, and it brings the stories my students have heard hundreds of times to life. Not to mention, each story has an important message. After reading "The Lorax" and seeing it on this DVD, we decided as a class to plant a tree for Earth day. For teachers or even parents with young children, Dr. Seuss inspires and teaches with rhyming, phonemic awareness and also important social messages. This DVD is more than cartoons, it is a wonderful opportunity to enrich young lives.

5 out of 5 stars Dr Seuss: visonnary with wit, fantasy and serious messages.......2007-03-09

Although I sometimes doubt about translating books into movies/animation, I was positively impressed by the quality of Dr Seuss films. I purchased the DVD for "the Lorax" exclusively, which is a masterpiece (book AND film), but also loved many other ones, especially "the sneetches". All of them are fun, with the inimitable rhythm and humor of Dr Seuss... but I am amazed at the way he grasps serious subjects like the society of consumption, profit and greed distroying the environment (the Lorax), or like racism, social discrimination and stupidity (Sneetches)! Great for ages 4 to 100! Bravo Dr Seuss! Hope there were more people like you!

4 out of 5 stars Classics.......2007-01-12

All the classics are on this DVD. You wouldn't think Dr. Seuss would be bad for young children since the books are great for first time readers but my son starting pointing aggressively and saying "NO" and "OUT" just like the fish does to the Cat in the Hat when we would ask him not to do something. There is always at least one character that is angry.

5 out of 5 stars AWESOMERIFICTULAR.......2006-08-16

This is a grrrrreat DVD. All the animated Dr. Seuss toons are here except for How The Grinch Stole Christmas. Almost 3 hours of Seuss on 1 DVD! The quality is excellent. I like this DVD most of all becasue it's very space-saving.

Exceptionally moving but not the least bit sentimental, Concert for George is a splendid tribute to the late George Harrison, whose contributions to the Beatles were so often hidden in the long shadows of John Lennon and Paul McCartney. A year to the day after Harrison's November 29, 2001 death, Eric Clapton assembled some musicians--people who had played with Harrison and known him intimately, including McCartney, Ringo Starr, and Tom Petty--to perform his music at London's Royal Albert Hall. They take on not just the predictable ("My Sweet Lord" and "Something," beautifully sung by Billy Preston and Sir Paul, respectively), but also lesser-known fare like "Old Brown Shoe" and "Beware of Darkness," all to superbly empathetic effect. But the tune most likely to make you misty-eyed is "While My Guitar Gently Weeps," which brings together three of the five musicians who played on the original recording: Ringo on drums, Clapton replicating his own classic solo, and McCartney playing piano and harmonizing with Clapton's lead vocal. Concert for George enjoyed a brief theatrical release, but even those who caught it on the big screen will delight in this two-disc DVD edition. Disc 1 features the complete concert (sans interview and rehearsal footage, but with a few additional songs and in the original running order), while disc 2 contains the theatrical version and some additional backstage and photo material. All in all, a beautiful piece of work. Wish you were here, George--but man, what a way to be missed. --Sam Graham

5 out of 5 stars A Wonderful Tribute To Nice Guy.......2007-09-12

Here is an all-star tribute to the late Beatle, George Harrison, who died of cancer a few years ago. He was a very gentle, likable guy and you know that just by the turnout of music all- stars here and the tribute these people gave to him - for his life and his music.

After the first viewing, I now skip the first 45 minutes of this long concert. It is Eastern sitar music which is okay but not enjoyable enough for me to sit through twice. The concert for most of us Westerners really begins in the second part when host Eric Clapton and the rest perform some of Hasrrison's best songs. Everyone does a good job with the material, doing George's songs proud. I had heard a few of the performances, such as Tom Petty's, were weak but I did not find fault with any performer including him..

It was fun to see Ringo Starr, Paul McCartney, Billy Preston, Jeff Lynne and some of the others. Joe Brown was someone I was not familiar with but he was outstanding and very likable and sang a touching finale. That ending just night bring a tear or two to your eyes.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent All Around (except for Monty Python).......2007-09-09

I was extremely pleased with almost everything about this performance/DVD. I thought the Monty Python segment was crude and out of place even though I am a fan of their movies. McCartney sounded as good as ever, Ringo was fun and put on a good preformance. Tom Petty was excellent. Eric Clapton pulled everything together. Probably my favorite performance was by Sam Brown (female) who has a hell of a voice with lots of power, and whe's pretty too. I can't figure out why I've never heard of her, I think she prefers the other side of the Atlantic. All in all, if you liked George Harrison and/or the Beatles, I can't see how you would be disappointed

5 out of 5 stars All those years ago.......2007-09-03

This is a fantastic tribute to a man who gave so much of himself to the music world. You should have more than 5 stars for the rating. I met George in 1987 and all i could say to him was thank you for all the wonderful years of music.
Douglas Walby

5 out of 5 stars Super Show a must have.......2007-07-24

Can't really say enough about this Super Show. You can't get better than this. Clapton was incredible in his playing and singing. I thought the number by Jools Holland stole the show. I did hope that Paul & Ringo would team up with Julian Lennon and Dhani Harrison for this, but I guess that is asking too much.

5 out of 5 stars A Treasure! A Classic!.......2007-07-24

"Concert For George" is a passionate and moving tribute to George Harrison, filled with memorable highlights.

I was taken by the captivating "Arpan", written by Ravi Shankar especially for this concert. It's earnestly conducted by Shankar's daughter, Anoushkah, who also turns in her own amazing sitar performance.

Also memorable is an appearance by the members of Monty Python, who puncture whatever pompousness may have been in the room as they reprise a couple of their classic routines.

But the show really takes off when the "gang" comes out - George's favorite musical friends. They rock the house as they perform with an obvious love and respect for George.

Every song in this DVD is a gem. Every performance is worthy. Highlights include Paul McCartney's rendition of "Something" (featuring a great duet with Eric Clapton), and Clapton nailing it on "While My Guitar Gently Weeps".

Beyond the music and performances, what makes this concert special - as another reviewer noted - are the small moments. And seeing Dhani Harrison (George's son) play right alongside the older pros is quite touching.

Highly recommended.

In 1998 a concert at the Royal Albert Hall celebrated Sir Andrew Lloyd Webber's 50th birthday and featured more than two hours of hits from a body of work spanning almost three decades. In this keepsake of a memorable night, star after star steps on to a massive, Eurovision-style set to revisit golden moments in their long association with Britain's most successful composer of musicals. Elaine Paige in big frocks and an even bigger voice delivers "Don't Cry for Me, Argentina" and "Memory" with her usual power; Michael Ball and Donny Osmond stretch the last vestiges of boyish charm to the very limits but still sound great; and Boyzone gets the youth vote. Then there are Kiri Te Kanawa, Bonnie Tyler, Tina Arena, and, of course, another encore for brother Julian Lloyd Webber and those Variations on the cello. But the stars are Sir Andrew's ex-wife Sarah Brightman in an outstanding selection from The Phantom of the Opera (probably his best work), Antonio Banderas (who really can sing), and Glenn Close, a stupendous, moving Norma Desmond in songs from Sunset Boulevard. All in all, a deserved celebration for someone who has given so many people a great deal of pleasure, and a treat for musicals fans of all ages. --Piers Ford

5 out of 5 stars A must for Andrew Lloyd Webber fans.......2007-09-17

This DVD gets played over and over. Lovely music and some very good singers.

5 out of 5 stars Brilliant and Spectacular!.......2007-08-21

Truly an amazing video filled with some of the most familiar and powerful Andrew Lloyd Webber songs. I was blown away from the start with Tina Arena's version of "Whistle Down the Wind," although can certainly agree with some of the other comments about her being a little too angry for that song. But, she is an incredible singer and an extremely classic entertainer. Donny Osmond's performance was perfect and I think the children singing backup were fantastic. I think this DVD should be called, "The diversity of Michael Ball." He was the brightest star in this entire ensemble and every song he sang was powerful and moving. His version of Gethsemane gave me chills, even though I think that it should be more true to the original rock version. It's amazing how he could hold his notes and sing the rest of the night. His version of "Vaults of Heaven" is outstanding! He really seemed to get into character and have fun with that song. Again, his voice was steady and powerful. I was able to see Ball in concert and he has been my favorite performer since.

I have already watched this DVD 3 times and it never gets dull for me. My only complaint about the DVD is that I really wish they would have not included Boyztown in the performances. They sounded OK, but in my opinion ruined the song, "No Matter What" with their boy band sound. The original London Cast version is 100 times better and actually has more meaning. I usually just pass over that one but the rest of the DVD is just amazing. This is the best DVD that I have seen in a while!

    5 out of 5 stars Bravo!!!.......2007-08-13

I had bought this masterpiece of entertainment in VHS, here, at Amazon, some years ago, so it was no surprise to me the high quality of the show. But I was glad to see that even better sound/image quality was obtained with the DVD.
The scene (songs) of "Sunset Boulevard", by Glenn Close, would be enough to give 5 stars to the product. But then you add Elaine Paige (she was the first Evita I saw on stage, London/March 1979), and her performances of "Don't Cry for Me, Argentina" and "Memory", and you feel rewarded enough. But the parade goes on: Lottie Mayor, Michael Ball, Donny Osmond, Tina Arena, Boyzone, Bonnie Tyler, Marcus Lovett, even Antonio Banderas (not exactly my choice as the Phantom but still acceptable)... A big plus is Dame Kiri Te Kanawa, and a tragic moment is Sarah Brightman trying to pass for a soprano. But not even the boring Julian Lloyd Webber justifies rating the Concert less than a 5 star spectacle. The DVD offers you the possibility of skipping such slippage...
Highly recommended for those who love musical theatre.

Like Schoolhouse Rock, Marlo Thomas's 1970s children's TV show, Free to Be… You and Me met with immediate success and became a treasured piece of entertainment over the years. Based on her award-winning album of songs, skits, and comedy, Free to Be explores the infinite possibilities of childhood. Fans know most of the skits in the 45-minute show verbatim, and it's easy to see why right from the beginning with an infectious title track followed by a puppet sketch featuring Thomas and Mel Brooks as newborns. Top talent appears on both sides of the camera, including Alan Alda who directs and performs a cartoon about a boy who wants a doll. However, the presentation does show its age at times: a teenage Michael Jackson singing (with Roberta Flack) on how he's not going to change when he grows up. For all ages. --Doug Thomas

    Description

This unique, highly acclaimed entertainment, stars Marlo Thomas, and features such celebrated talents as Alan Alda, Harry Belafonte, Mel Brooks, Rita Coolidge, Billy De Wolfe, Roberta Flack, Rosey Grier, Michael Jackson, Kris Kristopherson, THe New Seekers, Tom Smothers, The Voices of East Harlem and Dionne Warwick. Free To Be...You And Me is a journey into the endless possibilities of life, rich with positive, life-enhancing messages about growth and change. In a series of live action and animation, positive messages of self-esteem are illustrated through songs, stories and laughter. It explores children's authentic experiences, their dreams and concerns, their fears and fantasies. Among the highlights are Marlo Thomas and Mel Brooks in Boy Meets Girl and football hero Rosey Grier, singing It's Alright to Cry. In addition, Michael Jackson and Roberta Flack perform When We Grow Up and Alan Alda narrates the tale of Atalanta. This enchanted fun-filled voyage of discovery for adults and children to enjoy together is a superb addition to any family's home video library.

3 out of 5 stars Sadly dated, get the CD.......2007-05-12

I vaguely recall bits and pieces of video from my childhood, but it was still a bit of a shock when I got the DVD. The CD seems unfortunately timeless, but the DVD looks very very dated. Some of the animations (e.g. "Atalanta" and "William's Doll") aren't too bad, but the rest is too 70s. Get the CD instead, you'll be much happier.

5 out of 5 stars Stands the test of time.......2007-03-24

Kids loved this. Girls 7 (first grade) and 5 (pre k) and son 2 yrs. We moved from a very relaxed, well funded, full of arts school district to across the world, heavily congested, low funded little to standard art school district. Found the transition from fun sunny friends to competitive relatively unhappy community tough. This video really helped my 7 year old see her diversity in a soft and soothing way, believe it helped her move. Kids loved it for the entertainment value too. I swear I heard their brains blooming open with possibilities when they watched this. I loved the retro revisiting my childhood of it. It was a lot shorter than I remember it, which is handy for rewatching.

4 out of 5 stars Fun for me, and my 2 yr. old.......2007-02-10

I knew this stuff from the album, but hadn't ever seen the TV show. It is dated...cartoon unicorns flying off a carousel in Central Park. And unfortunately the video quality was obviously mediocre to start with. But it is fun, and the humorous parts are enduring. The songs are great too, as you'd remember if you were young when this came out...

I left my 2 yr old this morning on the couch watching the puppet babies (Mel Brooks and Marlo T) doing the I AM A BOY/GIRL thing--she had a big smile on her face..

    5 out of 5 stars heartwarming.......2007-02-06

It is so nice to hear this music again! My daughter enjoys it immensely and it'll be so nice to both be able to be nostalgic about it someday. I love that they're putting these shows from my youth onto DVD so she can enjoy them also.

4 out of 5 stars A classic from my childhood (in the 1970's).......2007-02-02

Sure, it's dated, and not a lot of kids know who Rosie Greer is. But, if you don't love it for the simple childhood "niceness" factor, rent it for the kitsch factor -- a young Michael Jackson is a hoot!

Continuing the "alienation trilogy" that began with L'Avventura and ended with L'Eclisse, Michelangelo Antonioni's La Notte is a visually arresting, emotionally numbing exercise in chronic ennui. The film's anesthetizing effect is entirely intentional; Antonioni's central couple (Marcello Mastroianni as a self-absorbed novelist, Jeanne Moreau as his bored and wealthy wife) wallow in their own emotional desolation, constantly drifting--and in Moreau's case, literally drifting--from one disaffected scene to the next. Antonioni's pained study of modern detachment is richly supported by his visuals, often placing his isolated characters in a harsh landscape of empty glamor and even emptier emotions. Driving the point home is Monica Vitti as Marcello's would-be mistress; in their aimless lassitude, neither can muster the necessary passion. It's all too superficial to register with any lasting dramatic impact, but La Notte remains the fascinating work of a master, redefining how movies reflect the many facets of humanity. --Jeff Shannon

    Description

Antonioni's study of alienation and moral decay chronicles a day in the life of a middle-class couple whose marriage has been destroyed by mutual indifference and impenetrable loneliness.

    Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars This is how falling out of love looks.......2007-06-27

The DVD offers few frills, but the film is a superb study of the death of love. As in the best of Antonioni's films, we are asked to understand and empathize with characters we'd prefer to castigate or dismiss. The slow pace invites thinking -- of all things!

4 out of 5 stars Another gem from Antonioni.......2007-05-27

La Notte is an apt title for the second film in Michelangelo Antonioni's trilogy, with L'Avventura being the first and L'Eclisse the last. All that symbolizes the night--darkness, melancholy, and particularly sleep and death, are referred to throughout the movie. Our difficulty communicating with one another and subsequent sense of alienation are, of course, addressed in La Notte just as they are in the other two films. The story here centers around a married couple, Giovanni (Marcello Mastroianni) and Lidia (Jeanne Moreau). From the moment we first see these two we sense a disconnect, a kind of sickness, even a death of sorts. Lidia's demeanor is zombie-like, as though she were sleepwalking. Without giving too much away, the opening scene, which Giovanni and Lidia are not in, subtly sets the tone for the film. A hospital patient is given morphine, which renders him half-awake and half-asleep. This state of being will take many forms and appear again and again in La Notte.

Lidia seems to be the only character in the movie with any depth of feeling, which is precisely why she has gone numb. Her pain overwhelms her. She suddenly leaves a party given for her husband, a writer who has just released a new book, to wander the streets of Milan. She is dwarfed and seemingly trapped by the skyscrapers surrounding her, and further alienated by the male passers-by who turn their heads to check her out. At one point she takes a taxi out of town to a more open area where, unlike Milan, not much has changed. But even here, shortly after stepping out of the taxi, she happens upon two street toughs engaged in a brawl which she fearlessly stops. It seems Lidia is searching for a paradise, an escape to salve her wounds, but there isn't one. Evening is falling now, streetlights gradually come on, and she returns home. Later that night, at another party she attends with her husband, she will do the same thing; wander around, alone and in pain.

It is at this party, which takes place at night and will last into the wee hours, where the problems between Lidia and Giovanni rise to the surface. And this is also where those symbols of the night mentioned earlier come at you one after the other. Antonioni is clever in how he portrays these symbols. One of the most interesting is a cat staring at a statue as if waiting for it to wake up and respond. Trying to catch all these metaphors is part of the enjoyment of this party segment.

One of the similarities between L'Avventura and La Notte is the men's handling of their troubled relationships versus the women's. Giovanni, as well as Sandro in L'Avventura, takes advantage of every opportunity to lose himself in the arms of another woman in order to fill the void. Lidia, on the other hand, has the chance to be with another man whom she meets at the party, but decides not to go through with it. She seems to know that the pleasure is fleeting and no cure for her marriage problems.

In the conclusion of the film the couple finally address what is happening between them, and it is heart-wrenching to watch. The truth hurts as they say. This ending differs from L'Avventura's in that more is said between the man and woman involved. We have a better idea of the outcome for Lidia and Giovanni, but we're still not quite sure of it even though they have verbalized their feelings. In L'Avventura, Claudia and Sandro do not say a word to each other and we are left with the same uncertainty. So one can derive that in the end we are alone no matter how hard we try to connect with another human being.

Jeanne Moreau, Marcello Mastroianni, and Monica Vitti are amazing. In this film, as in all of Antonioni's films, so much relies on facial expressions, gestures, and choreography, and these actors make it all look easy. However, even though La Notte is a great film, L'Avventura and L'Eclisse are better as they have a complexity and quiet beauty that is missing here. It is also a shame that La Notte is not in the Criterion Collection because there are no extras, no commentaries, interviews with the actors, etc. The bonus discs included in the other movies of the trilogy are a delight for the film buff. There is no doubt, despite these criticisms, that La Notte should be on everyone's list of movies to watch.

    5 out of 5 stars WOW!.......2007-03-07

Please note that before I begin that this review is for the MOVIE, not the DVD. In Australia the movie is available through umbrella entertainment, fully restored and in wide screen. I can only asume that at some point in the near future this version will be distributed in America.

O.K. Now that that is out of the way, on with the review!

La Notte is the third Antonion movie I have seen (The first being "Blow-Up", the second being "The Passenger") and it is the third time I have been blown away by him. His sense of aesthetic balance and composition are totally beyond reproach.

One of the reasons I love the work of Antonioni (showcased perfectly in this film), is that I am able to grasp the central ideas without the need to be overly analytical. La Notte, at it's surface, is about the break-down of a marriage. Digging deeper, it is about the hopelessness of life and our struggles to make meaning of the world around us.

Whenever our protagonists are on-screen, Antonioni's camera is either looking down on them, or framing them as an aside to the world they are in (many shots seemingly focus more on the city around the characters).

I highly recommend the work of this incredible talent to anyone who enjoys cinema at its purest.

    4 out of 5 stars L'avventura...La Notte...L'eclisse..........2007-01-25

This is the middle of the so-called Antonioni trilogy focusing on alienation and emotional deadness in modern life. Some also include Red Desert as a postlude to this trilogy. The one constant in the films is Monica Vitti, looking as pretty as ever, here in La Notte wearing a wig. La Notte is the least of the three films, L'avventura was the big breakthrough and L'eclisse is the outstanding finish with it's quasi avant-garde moments and the stunning, hypnotic, modernist ending.

While La Notte might be the least of the trilogy, it doesn't mean the film is poor by any measure. It's actually another wonderful, rhythmically spacious work with fine acting by Mastroianni and Moreau. Monica Vitti adds the appropriate allure too. The mood and pacing of this film is just something that one can easily fall in love with. The time flies by over the nearly two hour running time. It has practically no conventional plot to speak of, just a glimpse into a marriage over one day and primarily one night. We also see the typical decadent, emotionally sterile bourgeoisie inhabiting the background, the environment which our lead actors traverse. I enjoyed this film without a doubt every time I saw it, but it won't blow you away like it's counterparts L'avventura and L'eclisse. The DVD is decent quality but let's wait until the people at Criterion get their hands on it!

5 out of 5 stars Habit kills love.......2006-07-30

According to Bergman, this is one of the two chez d'oeuvres of Antonioni - the other one is "Blow-up", which I liked even more. A masterful study of a relationship through exposure of the protagonists to various situations. Tense and sad, it leaves the viewer with a sense of absence of a solution: feelings between two people inchoate, develop, and die... or change.

    5 out of 5 stars WOW!!!.......2007-05-25

I didn't want to leave the theater when I originally saw this film. Any musician, especially music teachers, will appreciate the multiculturalism that "Pulse" displays. (My students beg to watch this movie when I have a substitute.) "Pulse" is a great way to expose yourself and others to the vast variety of music that exists in our world. It is moving and absolutely breathtaking -- Enjoy!

    4 out of 5 stars Finally!.......2007-03-21

I've waited a long time for this IMAX film to be put on DVD so I could share it with my music students. I'm so excited that it's finally available!

Everything is there, plus some cool extras.

However, my excitement is tempered by the following:

The only reason I give it four stars instead of five is that the film was simply compressed from IMAX down to a letterbox.

Everyone looks a bit squished - noticeably wider and shorter than they did in the film. This is unfortunate because in the extras, everyone is proportioned correctly, obviously filmed with regular film instead of IMAX film.

Pulse: A Stomp Odyssey works along the premise that music--and more accurately, rhythm--is the global language. To that end, the Stomp team has done a fantastic job of collecting and filming cultural rhythms from around the globe. For those expecting something along the lines of Stomp's live performances such as the ones showcased in Stomp Out Loud, prepare to be disappointed. But for those looking for a creative and fantastic journey of discovery, Pulse delivers in spades.
