A gradual shift in overall style, character homecomings and departures, and evolving on- and off-screen roles for the major players are among the attractions of the seventh season of Stargate SG-1. Spread out over five discs, these 21 episodes are ample indication that changes notwithstanding--and admittedly, not all of them are for the better--the series remains arguably the best-made, most compelling sci-fi program on television.

Perhaps most noticeable is the reduced role of star Richard Dean Anderson, who opted to limit his number of trips to Vancouver, where Stargate SG-1 is filmed. But that's not a bad thing. The show's ability to poke fun at itself has always been a strong suit, and while Anderson still brings a welcome sense of humor to his portrayal of wiseacre and loose cannon Col. Jack O'Neill, his act is getting a little smug by now. What's more, the other principal cast members have taken up the slack, both behind and in front of the camera: Michael Shanks (Daniel Jackson, who rejoins the cast in episode 1) wrote one episode and co-wrote another; Christopher Judge (Teal'c) wrote one as well; Amanda Tapping (Lt. Col. Samatha Carter) directed episode 19, "Resurrection"; and even Corin Nemec (Jonas Quinn, who appears in just a few episodes) contributed one story.

The seventh season also finds the series somewhat more earthbound than in the past; indeed, there are episodes in which the Stargate (the "wormhole" our heroes use to travel to different worlds) doesn't appear at all. On balance, the stories are more personal, and more political--especially the final two, with the newly elected U.S. President (William Devane) struggling to decide the fate of the Stargate program (and, of course, the fate of the entire known universe as well!). And then there's the ultimate villain, Anubis, who makes perennial nemeses the Goa'uld (of which Anubis is one... sort of) look tame. He's a combination of Star Wars' Darth Vader and evil Emperor, but hey, at least these guys borrow from the best.

Stargate SG-1's production values remain first-rate. The bonus DVD features are also much better than they once were, with audio commentary (mainly by directors and writers) for every episode, as well as director profiles and "Beyond the Gate" featurettes focusing on individual characters. --Sam Graham

5 out of 5 stars Best Season of them all!.......2007-08-09

Stargate:SG-1, overall, is an amazing show. Each season has its moments, but I think the most moments are shown in this particular season(7). It's very refreshing to have Daniel back and to pursue story lines more on his character, as well as finally getting somewhere in finding the lost city. Lots of character development and we finally see some sort of relationship between Sam and Jack, not that it has to be anything more than friends. Just a beautiful season, with a huge ending that beats the ending of them all!

Sam, Daniel, Tielc, Gen Hammond, Dr Fraizer & Jack work together so well, such chemistry. I will sorely miss this cast & series but thank heavens I have the DVD collection.

      Product Description

Genres: Sci-Fi, Action, Adventure Tagline: Unlock The Universe Plot Outline A secret military team, SG-1, is formed to explore the recently discovered StarGates. Plot Synopsis: General Hammond summons Colonel Jack O'Neill out of retirement to embark on a secret rescue mission. O'Neill confesses that he disobeyed orders to destroy the Stargate on Planet Abydos, and that scientist Daniel Jackson may still be alive. Arriving on Abydos with his team, O'Neill meets up once again with the scientist, who has discovered a giant elaborate cartouche in hieroglyphics. All signs point to the fact that this is a map of many Stargates that exist throughout the galaxy - a development that makes the dream of the SG-1 team to travel throughout the universe in time a reality. Plot Keywords: Good Versus Evil | Alien | Ancient Egypt | Egyptology | Hieroglyphs | Wormhole | Military | Babe Scientist | Based On Film | Space Travel | Egyptian Mythology The central conceit of the original Stargate--the existence of an artificially created "wormhole" through which one can travel to different worlds light years away from Earth--was an intriguing one. In seizing on the obvious possibilities for expanding on that premise, series executive producers-writers Jonathan Glassner and Brad Wright smartly retained some of the film's basic elements (its amalgam of myth and theoretical hokum, or the ongoing clash of wills between scientists and soldiers), while adding a variety of fresh ideas (including new characters, new locations, and a welcome dose of humor, much of it supplied by Richard Dean Anderson, MacGyver himself, who replaces Kurt Russell in the central role of Colonel Jack O'Neill). The result is a show with multidimensional heroes and villains and consistently compelling story lines (many of them introduced in the pilot and carried forward through subsequent episodes) balancing excellent special effects and production values.

Hollywood's film archives overflow with the carcasses of dismal movies based on lame '60s and '70s television shows, a syndrome that shows no sign of abating. But here's evidence that the reverse effect, turning a movie into a TV series, can have surprisingly positive results. Indeed, Stargate SG-1 is not only significantly better than the 1994 feature it's derived from, but arguably the best-made, most compelling sci-fi program on television.

The central conceit of the original Stargate--the existence of an artificially created "wormhole" through which one can travel to different worlds light years away from Earth--was an intriguing one.

In the second season, "The Serpent's Lair" concludes the cliffhanger from the end of the first season in a rollercoaster of wit, plot twists, and cutting-edge special effects as the SG-1 team resign themselves to a suicide mission. In the two-parter "The Tok'ra," Sam's estranged father is dying of cancer, but her obligations sway her toward saving a member of the Goa'uld renegade Tok'ra who is also dying. In "Show and Tell," the central story arc takes a dramatic turn when a child arrives to warn that some survivors of a Goa'uld attack are determined to eliminate anyone who might host their enemy--which means Earth as a whole.

To resolve the season 2 cliffhanger, General Hammond rounds up every conceivable ally to rescue the SG-1 team from Hathor's clutches and gets a much-needed field trip in the process. In subsequent episodes in season 3, Daniel Jackson is intrigued by the planet Orban's scientific advances over only a few years. In a two-part cliffhanger, Sam must attempt to rescue her father, face Satan himself on a prison moon, and resurrect "Jolinar's Memories" from the Goa'uld she was briefly possessed by, then "The Devil You Know" reveals an embarrassing secret that could allow the team to escape the clutches of Satanic Sokar.

It wasn't until the beginning of the fourth season that fans knew to take the Replicator threat seriously. The spidery nasties had only seemed like one of many new enemies introduced in previous years. But when the one seemingly omnipotent backbone of the galaxy was asking Earth for help, clearly we were in real trouble! In fact, the team's list of enemies expanded and got far more complicated. There were quite a few Earth-based stories in the year, but not all the new enemies were originally local. Willie Garson comically guest-starred as Martin, a geekily suspicious guy with too much knowledge of the Stargate. More sinister was an old flame of Daniel's turning into something far more painful than an old wound (thanks to an ancient Egyptian curse). Thankfully, the writers hadn't forgotten the importance of one-off storylines too.

It now seems clear that season 5 will be remembered as the one in which something went awry with Daniel Jackson. Lots of behind-the-scenes rumors fueled the idea of cast tension, but whatever the problem, his sudden departure from the show was obviously through a quickly contrived scenario. Most shows go through a run-around, skin-of-their-teeth period awaiting renewal, and it certainly seems to have affected storylines this year. For example, a next generation of younger SG teams is introduced. The most unfortunate aspect, however, was that every single story was dependent on a part of the greater interwoven warring-species threads. Some of the one-off tales were terrific in and of themselves, but it was as if the writers fell into the trap of having to refer to as much backstory as possible, perhaps to ensure loose ends could be easily wrapped up? Ultimately none of this mattered since the show went on for quite a while.

The biggest change for the sixth season was its move to the Sci-Fi Channel. Financial rescue or genre haven from cancellation? With the addition of Daniel Jackson's replacement, Jonas Quinn, the new show dynamic (hinted at by the new title theme) meant far more convolutedly involved story arcs and less individual focus. One of very few solo spotlights came from Christopher Judge writing his own show, when "The Changeling" saw Teal'c act out a life as a fireman. There'd be several cameos through the year, culminating in a finale that relied on how much attention you'd been paying to that all-important back-story.

A gradual shift in overall style, character homecomings and departures, and evolving on- and off-screen roles for the major players are among the attractions of the seventh season. What's more, the other principal cast members have taken up the slack, both behind and in front of the camera: The seventh season also finds the series somewhat more earthbound than in the past; indeed, there are episodes in which the Stargate (the "wormhole" our heroes use to travel to different worlds) doesn't appear at all. And then there's the ultimate villain, Anubis, who makes perennial nemeses the Goa'uld (of which Anubis is one... sort of) look tame. --Sam Graham and Paul Tonks

5 out of 5 stars Beware of the price!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Stargate SG-1.......2006-06-26

I am a huge Stargate SG-1 fan... so dont get me wrong. But the complete season from 1-7 to buy individually is much cheaper than to buy from one of these sellers who try to make some 'profit,' if you know what I mean. Go to bestbuy or even buy the boxed sets 1-7 to a price of $36.99.
I love Stargate and going to buy it as soon as I have enough assets to buy 'em... season 1-8.
I loved it when O'Neill was there... still watch it because of Dr. Jackson...

3 out of 5 stars Too much of a not so good thing........2006-04-04

Seven seasons of this likable but hardly earth shaking sci fi stalwart is probably too much for any but the most uncritical completist fan. Season 1-3 represent about as good as it gets as far as full seasons go and contains many re-watchable old favourites. From season 4 onwards it's more of a case of sifting the dross from the gold, which becomes rarer as the years progress. The passionate, humanitarian Daniel Jackson and stoic Jaffa warrior Teal'c maintain their commitment throughout but in later seasons Jack O'Neill sinks to a rarely-seen parody of himself and Sam Carter becomes a rather sad 40-something teen groupie to him. The writers only occasionally seem to do anything but phone it in.

My advice is to buy seasons one to three, catch four to eight in reruns and take a fresh look at the revamped show from season nine onwards where the addition of the lively Claudia Black brings some welcome fiesty femininity to the show and Beau Bridges' General Landry brings back the gravitas of early seasons' Hammond.

      5 out of 5 stars Stargate SG-1.......2006-02-14

This is my favorite television series. I enjoyed the movie and the show does a great job taking that material and extending it with action, drama, suspense and comical fun. What I like most is how the show has explored much of human mythology. It has become quite popular, spawning a spin-off series and landing a 10th season on the SciFi channel.

NOTE: This show is intended for adults, not children. The first season premiered on the premium cable channel Showtime. Episodes included nudity, profanity and situations too scary for children. After the first season there was no more nudity and the profanity was toned down.

5 out of 5 stars The Mother Lode of Science Fiction!.......2006-01-09

Stargate SG-1 is as good as TV sci-fi gets. Though the latter seasons don't live up to the earlier ones, as a whole it represents the finest body of work ever done on TV in the genre. The first five seasons are especially good. To be sure, there are other great sci-fi shows (Battlestar Galactica, Bablyon 5, etc), but Stargate SG-1 rises above with a perfect blend of drama and humor. The show is serious, but not ENTIRELY serious. Richard Dean Anderson does a brilliant job of keeping it light with a "wink and nod" approach to his character. They never insult our intelligence by pretending it's not just a TV show the way other, more pretensious shows might. Yet, it never goes so far as to upset the dramatic sensibilities of the show. In that delicate balance lies the brilliance of the show!

Plus, let me say that Stargate SG-1 was produced with full cooperation from the Air Force. Despite being a sci-fi show, it does a more accurate job of showing real Air Force protocols and the military mindset than any other show ever has. Two different Secretaries of the Air Force have appeared on the show as a sign of support. Stargate is a sci-fi show at heart, but there are definitely times when it becomes a flat-out military show, too. And the Stargate crew has always gone out of their way to give back to the real-life soldiers, Amanda Tapping in particular. They deserve praise for that.

At this price for the first seven seasons, this is the most cost-effective way to get into Stargate!

      HIGHLY Recommended!

5 out of 5 stars Best Television Science Fiction Series of all time.......2005-12-24

I have been spending some time watching my Stargate SG-1 DVDs (seasons 1-7) and the more I watch them, the more I am convinced that this is the best television Science Fiction series of all time. Let me qualify a few things before making my case.

Other series MIGHT have become the greatest in time, but were cancelled before they came to fruition. So I am leaving those out of the discussion.

I am not saying that Stargate is the greatest Science fiction entertainment of all time. It's just a TV show and has all the limitations of TV. It has to build an audience, keep the women interested, etc etc etc, so it has its share of derivative plots, soap opera episodes and all the same elements as any TV Science Fiction.

Having said that I present my case.

      1) Stargate SG-1 has the best continuity and fewest logical inconsistencies of any SF TV series I have ever seen. Watch the movie. Watch the 7 seasons and you bascially have a single, unfolding, consistent story which slowly evolves. The first time I went through the seasons, I missed many of the cross references to previous episodes. This one factor places it above all of the Star Trek series which are loaded with contradictions and goofs, so many so that many of the Trek cast have done books and tapes exposing all the errors.

      2) Stargate SG-1 slowly unfolds and explores a consistent and interesting Science Fiction. The mysteries of the gate, how it works and what it can be used for continue to be explored and expanded. The mysteries of the race that created the gate, earth's own history, ancient cultures and myths are all a part of the journey. This creates a feeling of wonder that gives you something to look forward to and because it is based in our time and our history, it creates an engaging framework.

      3) Stargate SG-1 is among the best of the series in terms of acting. The 4 members of the team are consistently good and can individually carry episodes that center on them. Comparing to other series of its type, for each excellent Spock, there is a wierd Kirk. For each Picard, there is a wooden Riker. I admit this is a matter of taste, but I think O'Neil, Carter, Jackson and T'ealk rock.

      4) 9 seasons and counting. A successful spin off.

      5) The individual seasons cost under $40. Trek DVD sets are over $80 per season.

      6) Writing. We have already commented on consistency. And while I admit that the story ideas are derivative, they borrow from the best and improve on them. Again, this is a subjective thing, but I think SG-1 balances drama, action, content and humor as well as any of the others on this list. In fact, I think Stargate really builds on Star Trek, going more quickly via the gate where no man has gone before, centering on a cohesive team whose complementary strengths make them effective and creating commentary about us as 21st century Americans, much like Trek did. There are also enough mind bending episodes of really new stuff to make the show stand out.

      7) Did I mention humor?
