Unlike the fly in the 1958 horror classic, they never really explain what happens to the neighbor's sheepdog when young Wilby Daniels trades places with it. The dog just vanishes, or is subsumed or assumed or something, leaving Wilby (Tommy Kirk) to explain to his dog-hating, allergic, mailman father (Fred MacMurray) that he's turned into a canine. The Shaggy Dog seems like the first instance of Disney packaging, as most of the principals were either Mouseketeers or had been in the short Disney segment Spin and Marty or a previous Disney film. As successful as The Absent Minded Professor for humor, Dog follows Wilby and a rival as they vie for the hand of the new French girl in school, and the girl next door (Annette Funicello). The exchanges with Wilby's younger brother, Moochie (Kevin Corcoran), who always wanted a family dog, are alone worth the price of the tape. Indeed the most successful element of this overall endearing film is the re-pairing of the two actors as brothers (they had done so before in 1957's Old Yeller). This is family fare that's diverting without pandering, a feat that the later Disney regime would have a difficult time re-creating. --Keith Simanton
Description
The first live action movie ever produced by Walt Disney is on DVD for the first time ever! Fred MacMurray heads an all-star cast that includes Jean Hagen, Tim Considine, Kevin Corcoran, and Annette Funicello in her big screen debut. After years of on-the-job clashes with cranky canines, mail carrier Wilson Daniels (MacMurray) sees man's best friend as his worst enemy. This makes for one hairy situation when a magical ring accidentally transforms his teenage son Wilby (Kirk) into a lumbering sheepdog! Can Wilby break the spell and foil a team of international spies, or will both he and his dad wind up in the doghouse? Packed with sidesplitting antics, slapstick chases, and hilarious sight gags, this madcap adventure will tickle the funny bone of every two- (and four-) footed member of your family!

The shaggy Dog.......2007-07-20
Another of Disney's fun movies. It is great to watch all these years later
This Original Outshines the Remake.......2007-04-11
This film is a classic family film to be enjoyed by everyone, and the recent remake can't hold a candle to it. Fred MacMurray, Tommy Kirk and Kevin Corcoran are at their best.
Shaggy Dog (Orig Version).......2007-03-14
This is a good clean funny Disney movie. Typical for the era it was made for and for kids. I was getting it for a small grandson as a birthday present and also ordered one for myself at the same time. Unfortunately, some of the remakes of Disney movies have not been for the very young any more which is why I prefer to get the original version. My grandson loved it and watches it repeatedly and his parents do not have to worry about a 6 year old seeing anything inappropriate for his age. At the same time adults also enjoy watching it for laughs and fun.
A Disney Classic.......2007-01-29
This Disney movie is charming and full of fun. The movie manages to pack a lot into a relatively short time, boasting at least five plots and sub-plots. Though one of the central plots involves spies, a car chase and a boat chase, the movie is quite tame and suitable for even the youngest members of the family.
Wilby Daniels, played by Disney regular Tommy Kirk, is somewhat of a geek. He experiments in his basement. His latest experiment is a missile interceptor that seems to be ready to launch though Wilby did not ignite it. Moochie Daniels, played by Kevin Corcoran, another Disney regular, is Wilby's younger brother. Disney paired Corcoran with Kirk as Kirk's younger brother in five movies. This movie was the second of the five.
Given Wilby's nerdy ways, he has a problem meeting girls. Lovely Allison d'Allessio, played by Annette Funicello, yet another Disney regular, lives close by, but Wilby struggles to ask Allison out. Wilby's supposed friend Buzz Miller, played by yet another Disney Regular Tim Considine, is a smooth operator when it comes to dating and is an even smoother operator when it comes to getting Wilby to pay for Buzz's dates.
Dad Wilson Daniels is a mailman who hates dogs. Fred McMurray, one more Disney regular, plays Wilson Daniels. Wilson suffers throughout this movie, mostly because of Wilby's activities. There is the hole in the roof, the near disaster as Wilby gets ready to hammer a lump that turns out to be Wilson's head, the talking dog that gets Wilson in trouble with the police. Poor Dad.
Though Wilby seems to be in continuous trouble, major trouble ensues when Wilby accidentally picks up a ring from a museum. Wilby reads the inscription on the ring, in canis corpore transmuto, which translates approximately as change into a dog's body. Soon Wilby sprouts fur, paws and a cold wet nose, and comedy is sure to follow.
The movie has already set up comedy because we know that Wilson Daniels dislikes dogs. Wilby is also supposed to go to a dance with Buzz, Allison, and a beautiful new neighbor. But the excitement increases when Wilby, in his dog form, overhears spies. Soon Wilby wreaks al kinds of havoc as he drives a car while still a dog. Things become even more exciting when Wilson Daniels attempts to explain to the police and then the government how he knows about a secret project. Who is going to believe anyone that a dog told them?
Some of Disney's best movies were light comedy. "The Shaggy Dog" combines the talents of some of the best Disney stars of the era with a fast-paced plot and moderate slap-stick. In addition, nearly every movie with Fred McMurray in it is guaranteed to be enjoyable. Most important, every member of the family can watch this movie. Sit back and enjoy one of the better live action movies produced by Walt Disney.
No such dog as a Bratislavian Sheepdog.......2006-06-10
I would just like everyone out there to know that there is no such dog as a Bratislavian Sheepdog. The name was created strictly for use in this movie. The dog in the role as Wilby Daniels & Chiffon is in fact an Old English Sheepdog named Sam, who was rescued from a pound for the amount of $3

Tim Allen barks, growls, and slobbers his way through the latest remake of the classic Disney suburban fable The Shaggy Dog. A mystical long-lived dog is kidnapped from Tibet by a nefarious corporation; when it escapes, it bites aspiring District Attorney Dave Douglas (Allen, The Santa Clause, Toy Story), who finds himself regressing into a dog in the courtroom. There's more to the plot--something to do with creating a youth serum from the dog's blood--but let's face it, that's not what anyone's going to see the movie for, and the "bad dad remembers how to love his family" theme is equally perfunctory. This is all about Allen running around like a dog and a cute sheepdog running around trying to do human things, and the movie does a competent job of playing with that scenario. Allen throws himself into doggieness with amusing abandon. Also featuring Kristin Davis (Sex and the City), Spencer Breslin (The Cat in the Hat), Jane Curtin (3rd Rock from the Sun), Danny Glover (Lethal Weapon), and Robert Downey Jr. (Kiss Kiss Bang Bang, Wonder Boys), who seems to be enjoying himself as a nefarious scientist at the nefarious corporation. --Bret Fetzer

Love This Movie!.......2007-01-09
Tim Allen is one of my favorite comedians. Love this movie. It's one of those movies that you want to watch over and over again, and you'll laugh as hard as the first time.
Wonderful Fun Film Made Me Laugh a Lot.......2007-01-05
I have been watching this film on STARZ over the last two days and just thought it was wonderful! I have not laughed so much in a very long time so I am ordering the DVD from Amazon soon. Too many times I watch movies that are billed as comedies but never even get me to smile let alone laugh. The movie is a very modern take on important issues like genetic engineering and cruetly to animals during scientific research projects. It emphasized family values very nicely. Growing up in the 50s and 60s I enjoyed the good guys winning without resorting to violence. Tim Allen does a really great job impersonating a dog. Overall this is a feel good movie.
(2. 5 STARS) Tim Allen Becomes 'The Shaggy Dog': Some Good Laughs with Unnecessary Sub-Plots .......2007-01-03
Tim Allen is Dave Douglas, a deputy DA who is turned into "a shaggy dog". You will be seeing Tim Allen growling in the court and running after a stray cat on four, knocking over an old lady (seriously) and he finally becomes a sheep dog (with the amusing voiceover of Tim Allen himself). Don't forget that Dave is also a slightly workaholic but good father, whose marriage life is falling apart; whose son is leading an unfulfilled life, and whose daughter an animal right activist.
`The Shaggy Dog' looks like two movies rolled into one. Or maybe it is more than two movies (for five writers are attached to the script). One movie is about Tim Allen doing silly things, and the other about dysfunctional family. The first plot about the father turned into a sheepdog is already silly, but the silly story works with Tim Allen here, if not perfectly. The set-pieces are pretty clichéd ones, but decently done. Still it makes me rather sad to hear the in-joke about `Toy Story' and its character here.
To his credit Tim Allen does his best, making us laugh with his amusing comic performances of the man-to-mutt transformation, which deserves more screen time than the other half, all-too-familiar sub-plot about his ailing marriage. Usually when we review this kind of family-oriented pictures, we often write `Kids will love it' or something like that. But I am not sure as far as 'The Shaggy Dog' goes because I think the film's second plot may feel like a real drag for most pre-teen kids.
Incredible thing is, the first plot is given a far-fetched background, and that is about an evil scientist (Robert Downey Jr.) who studies the serum extracted from a 300-year-old dog living among the Tibetan Buddhists. There is a story about wrongly accused guy (who is forgotten by the end of the film), Phillip Baker Hall's CEO in wheelchair and mutant animals. All these things clutter in the disjointed story, only confusing my head.
Perhaps, as more than one reviewer on the net point out, Robert Downey Jr. who is really good with his perfect goofiness as the clueless villain, should have played the protagonist instead of Tim Allen. Or perhaps producer-actor Tim Allen should have another choice to make a film. Or maybe, just maybe, Disney should have made another move.
I can hear the voice of "no more remakes, please." I can understand, but I don't know how many of us have really seen the original. Probably what is really annoying is not that Hollywood keeps making remakes, but that we somehow sense they are not treating the source material in the right way, as seen in this film.

In this sequel to The Shaggy Dog, Wilby Daniels (Dean Jones) has grown up and married Suzanne Pleshette, and has a young son. When the family comes home to find the house cleaned out by "movers"--who Daniels knows are protected by the corrupt District Attorney John Slade (Keenan Wynn)--he decides to run against Slade in the next election. Meanwhile, hoodlums connected to the same crime syndicate get hold of the mystical ring that turns poor Daniels (via mid-'70s special effects) into Elwood, the dog owned by the local ice-cream vendor (Tim Conway). Lots of chase scenes, a little roller derby action, and some cherry pie throwing complicate both Daniels's bid for office and his quest to remain a human being. Kids will enjoy the last half of this 91-minute movie the most as Daniels spends most of the time in his dog persona and because his son becomes part of the plot to undo the bad guys. This G-rated feature is safe for all ages, but kids probably won't sit through it until age 4 or 5. --Kimberly Heinrichs
Description
The first political candidate with a law degree and a pedigree is now on DVD! Dean Jones, Tim Conway, Suzanne Pleshettte, and Keenan Wynn star in this howlingly hilarious sequel to Walt Disney's classic, THE SHAGGY DOG. Disgusted by the shady dealings of not-so "Honest" John Slade (Wynn), Wilby Daniels (Jones) decides to run for District Attorney, but when robbers steal the magic Borgia ring that "dogged" Wilby as a teenager, the fur really begins to fly! Once again, Wilby keeps turning into a large, talking sheepdog at the worst possible moments when the ring's magical incantation is read aloud. And when dirty trickster Slade discovers Wilby's secret, the race is on to see who can get their paws on the ring first! Packed with nonstop laughter for the entire family, THE SHAGGY D.A. promises -- and delivers -- sidesplitting fun!
Customer Reviews:
A Dog's Tale.......2007-02-26
This movie was a sequel to the clever 1959 movie "The Shaggy Dog." That movie was charming and clever, packing a lot of humor and numerous subplots into a relatively short film. Unfortunately, this film is a pale shadow of the earlier film. The jokes are often forced and a viewer can easily see that the special effects used to make the dogs talk are film loops of dogs chewing. I recommend this film only for people who are loyal Disney fans or fans of the numerous well-known actors in this film.
Wilby Daniels (Tommy Kirk) encountered a Borgia ring in the 1959 movie "The Shaggy Dog." His transmutation into a sheep dog stopped at the end of the movie and the ring was put into safe keeping. Seventeen years later Wilby Daniels, now played by Disney regular Dean Jones, is an attorney living in a town full of corruption, lead by district attorney "Honest" John Slade, played by another Disney regular, Keenan Wynn. After being a victim of the rampant crime in Medfield, Wilby decides it is time to challenge Slade for the position of district attorney.
Unfortunately for Daniels, the Borgia ring has resurfaced and has already worked wonders for his hair; and his nose; and his tail! In a reprise of the original movie, we see Wilby turn into a sheepdog at the worst possible times. Wilby also manages to vex Tim Conway, who keeps trying to win a bet that his sheepdog Elwood can talk.
The rest of the movie is routinely scripted with slapstick jokes and scenes that are variations of similar jokes and themes from 1970's-era Disney movies, which is really the problem with this movie. The movie is okay, but uninspired. The movie struggles to be funny. The minimal tension in the movie is forced and generally unbelievable. The movie comes across as being tired.
In spite of the rehashed plot, the tired jokes and the slapstick, there are things to like about this movie. Somehow Suzanne Pleshette rises above the script in her role as wife Betty Daniels. Though the character of "Honest" John Slade is a stereotype of similar characters in other Disney films, Keenan Wynn is always fun to watch. The movie had other shining moments. The cherry pie fight scene was funny. Though the talking dog bit was over-used, the dog pound breakout had humorous moments.
Other well-known stars from that era include Vic Tayback (a regular in the television show "Alice") as crook Eddie Roschak, Dick Van Patten ("Eight Is Enough") as Slade's assistant, and Jo Ann Worley (whose first role was in "The Many Loves of Dobie Gillis" in 1960, but became famous on Rowan and Martin's "Laugh-In"; Worley also appeared in the 1962 Disney space comedy "Moon Pilot") as Tim Conway's roller derby girl friend Katrinka Muggelberg.
In the 1950's and the 1960's Disney excelled at light comedy. The movie "The Shaggy Dog" is one of those light comedies. Unfortunately, Disney struggled in the late 1960's and in the 1970's with weak plots and weak scripts. This sequel to "The Shaggy Dog" was one of those that suffered from a weak script. Fortunately, there are just enough moments in this movie to make the movie worth having if you are a Dean Jones fan, a big Disney fan, or a fan of any of the other actors in this movie. I am usually comfortable with my rating for a movie, but if I could I would have rated this one three and a half stars.
Good luck!
Entertaining.......2006-05-29
I thought the movie was interesting. I did not like the number of time the director had Tim Allen seemingly nude, Wew! I thought the themes were interesting: father accepts son's interest in theatre, father learns to spend more time with his family, and father discovers the courage of his daughter.
Shaggy represents the quest for the fountain of youth and the magic serum. Shaggy, instead of aging in dog years has an inverse equation allowing him to live seven times as long, for a total of 300 years.
The Shaggy DA story is about discovery by switching places between father and son and daughter and seeing the world from the other person's eyes. The music was good, the surban life environment was "every day", and the character cast was entertaining.
Shaggy DA character steals from older themes like the "American Werewolf", when Daniels heart beat increases he transforms into a dog. The humour reminds me of "American Werewolf" with Micheal J Fox. Fox was more charmastic and appealing. Daniel, after mediating or sleeping would revert back to human form usually under a full moon.
Special effects were entertaining: The Cobra acts like "Buttercup" in "Master of Disguise" and the rats bark, a bulldog frog flops around, and the monkeys lead the escape for the research lab.
TIM CONWAY SAVES "THE SHAGGY D.A.".......2006-03-16
Disney's "The Shaggy D.A." is an inferior follow-up to the original classic, "The Shaggy Dog." The film stars Disney regular, Dean Jones, as Wilby Daniels (the part originally played by Tommy Kirk), who is now married to beautiful Suzanne Pleshette and is running for district attorney. Some crooks steal the cursed ring that was responsible for turning Wilby into a sheep dog when he was a teenager. The crooks thought the ring might be worth a fortune but discover no one will buy it, so they sell it to Tim Conway, whose an ice cream salesman and owns a big shaggy sheep dog named Elwood. Of course, he reads the encryption on the ring and Dean Jones turns into the sheep dog! Tim Conway saves "The Shaggy D.A." with his comic genius and has several funny moments throughout the film. Dean Jones is one of my favorite Disney actors, but this isn't his finest film. His best performances are in "Blackbeard's Ghost," "The Snowball Express," and the classic "The Love Bug." The dvd receives a very good transfer and is in the widescreen format. Extras include a making-of documentary with interviews with Tim Conway and Dick Van Patten, which give some insights on the film's set during production. I recommend "The Shaggy D.A." to Disney dvd collector's and fans of Dean Jones, and especially Tim Conway. "The Shaggy D.A." is a fair companion to "The Shaggy Dog" and a nice addition to the Disney dvd library.
The Truth About What Is On The Shaggy D.A........2005-12-18
On March 7 get ready to see the sequel to the The Shaggy Dog staring Dean Jones, Jo Anne Worley, Dick Van Patten and Tim Conway. The Shaggy D.A. is about Wilby Daniels as an adult with a wife and son. He runs for District Attorney. Wilby turns to a sheepdog again until he finds the ring. The bonus features are Putting on The Dog feature, The Good, The Bad and The Funny feature and and audio commentary with Jo Anne Worley, Dick Van Patten and Tim Conway. The rating is G. The run time is one hour and thirty-one minutes. The aspect ratio 1.85:1 enhanced for 16x9 TV screens. The sound is mono. The Shaggy D.A. may also be played in Spanish or French. Enjoy!
The Shaggy D.A. Should Be On DVD!.......2005-10-15
