Inspired by Chris Marker's acclaimed short film La Jetée (which is included on the DVD Short 2: Dreams), 12 Monkeys combines intricate, intelligent storytelling with the uniquely imaginative vision of director Terry Gilliam. The story opens in the wintry wasteland of the year 2035, where a virulent plague has forced humans to live in a squalid, oppressively regimented underground. Bruce Willis plays a societal outcast who is given the opportunity to erase his criminal record by "volunteering" to time-travel into the past to obtain a pure sample of the deadly virus that will help future scientists to develop a cure. But in bouncing from 1918 to the early and mid-1990s, he undergoes an ordeal that forces him to question his own perceptions of reality. Caught between the dangers of the past and the devastation of the future, he encounters a psychiatrist (Madeleine Stowe) who is initially convinced he's insane, and a wacky mental patient (Brad Pitt in a twitchy Oscar-nominated role) with links to a radical group that may have unleashed the deadly virus. Equal parts mystery, tragedy, psychological thriller, and apocalyptic drama, 12 Monkeys ranks as one of the best science fiction films of the '90s, boosted by Gilliam's visual ingenuity and one of the finest performances of Willis's career. --Jeff Shannon
Customer Reviews:
A great film, and what a "reimagining" should be..........2007-09-03
This is one of Gilliam's best films, and one of his most commercially successful. It's one of the few films I really liked in the 1990's, as it is (as with most of Gilliam's work) a true work of art and something that is totally Gilliamish. It is a sad, haunting, strange work. One of the reasons this film works so well is that the studio left Gilliam alone and let him get on with it. The performances by Bruce Willis, Madeline Stowe, and Brad Pitt are all excellent. Willis is exceptionally good, showing that he can actually act if working with a great director like Gilliam. Stowe brings a tender, quiet quality to her role, and Pitt is great as a borderline insane guy. Some of his dialogue is a bit obvious, but overall it doesn't detract too much from the film. This is a pseudo-remake of Chris Marker's remarkable La Jetee, but Gilliams does it justice. La Jetee is a masterpiece, but then, so is this film. Gilliam really does "reimagine" it, bringing his own distinct voice to the material, and expounding on Marker's masterpiece. Marker recently said he felt this film was wonderful because Gilliam has such a rich imagination (which he does). The ending is quite sad, but it works very well, and kudos to the studio and Gilliam for keeping it in. I always admired Gilliam's film, even his misunderstood Tideland. I think he's one of the great directors. This is one of his best films....

Great ending.......2007-08-24
One of Pitt's best roles. The world is devastated by a plague everyone dies. The few survivors go and live below ground and search back through time for a cure. Great ending.

All Time Favorite.......2007-08-13
I remembered watching this movie in the theatre when I was in high school. It has remained my favorite of all time.
Fantastic.......2007-06-04
I really liked the movie. One of the best sci-fi movies I have seen. But I have a question. When Madeleine Stowe calls up the number that Bruce Willis is supposed to call, and she reaches a carpet cleaning company she is overjoyed thinking that the virus plague is a hoax after all. She nevertheless leaves a message in the voice mail of that number and recounts it to Bruce Willis who of course has heard it before and repeats the message verbatim even before Stowe could finish telling him. The whole point of the film is that Bruce Willis is reliving the past exactly as it had happened, with him as one of the main protagonist. So what actually happened in 1996? Did Stowe call up the carpet cleaning company? Did she leave a message? If she did and repeated that to Willis did Willis know beforehand what her message was? If he knew, then how did he know? He was NOT time travelling THEN. He was just a little boy of 8 years. And if it was not Willis (Cole) in 1996 who Stowe (Railly) met, then who was it? Because Cole was 8 years old in 1996. Can anybody throw any light?

Product Description
The award-winning La Puppe has charmed festival audiences nationwide. A hilarious parody and loving homage to Chris Marker's classic short "La Jetee" (1962), this film is a must-see for fans of the original and an equal delight for the uninitiated. Not to be missed is the tour-de-force performance given by MARTY, the patriarch of the French New Wave Plush-Toy movement and still one of the leading inanimate objects working in film today.
Customer Reviews:
La Puppe.......2007-06-27
Not precisely a review, but still entirely germane to the product.
I never got to see the short.
I don't even know what else is on the disk.
I had the identical problem with two separate copies of this disk, both of which had to be returned to amazon. Neither disk would even play in my player; the machine froze.
Unfortunate.
Three stars so as not to be mean-spirited; but my review concerns the playability of the disk, not its contents, of course. A warning, possibly, to others.
Viva La Puppe .......2007-05-12
Perfect short film . . . Captures the essence of La
Jette perfectly

Great Combo Deal!!!.......2007-08-15
Little known but perfect way to snatch up these sci-fi masterpieces. 12 Monkeys (Special Edition) is a slightly better film, but Children of Men is amazing as well. Do yourself a favor and pick these movies up at a great price (they come in their own separate original packaging, just shrink wrapped together)

12 Monkeys
Inspired by Chris Marker's acclaimed short film La Jetée, 12 Monkeys combines intricate, intelligent storytelling with the uniquely imaginative vision of director Terry Gilliam.
The Thing (1982)
Director John Carpenter and special makeup effects master Rob Bottin teamed up for this 1982 remake of the 1951 science fiction classic The Thing from Another World, and the result is a mixed blessing. It's got moments of highly effective terror and spine-tingling suspense, but it's mostly a showcase for some of the goriest and most horrifically grotesque makeup effects ever created for a movie. With such highlights as a dog that splits open and blossoms into something indescribably gruesome, this is the kind of movie for die-hard horror fans and anyone who slows down to stare at fatal traffic accidents. On those terms, however, it's hard not to be impressed by the movie's wild and wacky freak show. It all begins when scientists at an arctic research station discover an alien spacecraft under the thick ice, and thaw out the alien body found aboard. What they don't know is that the alien can assume any human form, and before long the scientists can't tell who's real and who's a deadly alien threat. Kurt Russell leads the battle against the terrifying intruder, and the supporting cast includes Richard Masur, Richard Dysart, Donald Moffat, and Wilford Brimley. They're all playing standard characters who are neglected by the mechanistic screenplay (based on the classic sci-fi story "Who Goes There?" by John W. Campbell), but Carpenter's emphasis is clearly on the gross-out effects and escalating tension. If you've got the stomach for it (and let's face it, there's a big audience for eerie gore), this is a thrill ride you won't want to miss. --Jeff Shannon

12 Monkeys 4 stars / Thing 2 stars.......2004-09-17
12 Monkeys
Action, lots of action, violence and a taste for spiders. This is more intricate than the mindless "Die Hard" series. You have a solid plot and a rather good mystery. Add that to a little time travel and a deadly virus and you have a decent movie.
Bruce Willis is tasked to travel back from 2035 to today (1996) to brig back a pure strain of virus that was released into the world. The are the "what ifs" of time and if you look close you may see your self. He gets more than he bargained for and so do we (a movie that will hold your attention.)
The Thing
Yep we are confronted by a dog-splitting being from the great beyond. Being isolated we must evaluate track and kill this most obviously menacing "Thing". But what, who, and where is it?
In an attempt at graphic surprises we have sacrificed character and mood of the book ("Who Goes There" by John W. Campbell Jr.), and the original movie ("The Thing From Another World.)". Ah you say what if you do not compare? Still it is a sticky blob story that has no personality of its own.
This movie is fun to watch and say "don't look there" but it is far from extraordinary.

Both good........2003-02-17
I would buy it for Jackal but because i am not that psycho kind of guy and didn't like 12 monkeys so much i can't really say which one is better! 12 Monkeys is a psychological film that needs some thinking in order to enjoy it and the jackal is an excellent action film that doesn't need further comments. I would like to add that both Brad Pitt and Bruce Willis cooperate really well in the film and that the jackal gets sick sometimes in the film because of too much blood. Despite that i think they are both films worth watching them and nice to spend your time with!
one great movie,but a great value.......2001-05-31
I like the above viewer bought this to get twelvemonkeys which I have wanted for over a year since I got a dvd player, This is one the best movie's ever made and well whorth the money. You get the jackal as bonus and it not that bad of movie either, It just does not stand up the brilliant twelve monkeys, Plus the documentry is as good as the movie on twelve monkey's. Buy this set today
One good, one average........2001-05-27
I bought this for 12 Monkeys, with the Jackal as sort of an afterthought. I think that it is easily worth the price because either the Jackal or 12 Monkeys alone costs 25 bucks, so why not get both? 12 Monkeys is a great, thought provoking movie, and is worth the price alone, but for LESS than the price of the Jackal on DVD alone, you get both movies. If you want to buy either 12 Monkeys OR the Jackal, buying both saves you money. Both DVDs have pretty good features too, and the 12 Monkeys DVD has a documentary that is almost as long as the movie. Overall, I would say that this is a great bargain.
Great combinations of movies.......2001-05-23
I was personally a big fan of the movie 12 monkeys this thriller is ming boggling, I enjoyed the Jackal as well but i was somewhat disapointed, but I would still consider this a must have for all action movie fans.
