Very Helpful.......2007-08-08
We've been working with our 16 month old daughter for several months on signing and this video really helps reinforce the concepts. She loves it. The signing has definitely provided a way to communicate that lowers frustration levels. If you're looking for a way to get started signing with your child, this is a good product.
Dangerous- avoid!.......2007-08-07
From a recent study-
These products had the strongest detrimental effect on babies 8 to 16 months old, the age at which language skills are starting to form. "The more videos they watched, the fewer words they knew," says Christakis. "These babies scored about 10% lower on language skills than infants who had not watched these videos."
Great DVD.......2007-07-31
My daughter has been watching this for months now. She knew some signs from a book I purchased but she learned more from this video. Even though she can now "say" all the words, she still likes to sign for them as well. This is still among one of her most favorite DVDs to watch.
Quality problems.......2007-07-29
We ordered Baby Einstein - My First Signs and My Baby Can Talk - Sharing Signs at the same time. My son (9 mo old) likes both but likes My Baby Can Talk - Sharing Signs better. Both videos include a variety of helpful signs like mommy, daddy, bath, kiss, cereal, milk, drink, eat, change, sleep, etc. Both are well directed & scripted with cute music, but the Baby Einstein copy we received has big quality problems. In several spots the screen goes blurry (kind of like your TV does when cable is having problems.) Another thing, I especially like the enclosed quick reference signing card that comes with My Baby Can talk, but was not provided with Baby Einstein. Bottom line, if you are buying just one buy My Baby Can Talk Sharing Signs.
Entertaining for baby 3 months old.......2007-07-29
My baby found this dvd very entertaining, I thought it was boring to watch but she cant take her eyes off the tv when the dvd is on. It is great for babies, even as early as 3 months.

This B movie with noble aspirations is the work of a gifted filmmaker whose storytelling falls short of his considerable stylistic flair. While addressing crises of faith in the framework of an alien-invasion thriller, M. Night Shyamalan (in his follow-up to The Sixth Sense and Unbreakable) favors atmospheric tension over explanatory plotting. He injects subtle humor into expertly spooky scenes, but the story suffers from too many lapses in logic. The film's faults are greatly compensated by the performance of Mel Gibson as a widower whose own crisis of faith coincides with the appearance of mysterious crop circles in his Pennsylvania cornfield... and hundreds of UFOs around the globe. With his brother (Joaquin Phoenix) and two young children (Rory Culkin, Abigail Breslin), the lapsed minister perceives this phenomenal occurrence as a series of signs and portents, while Shyamalan pursues a spookfest with War of the Worlds overtones. It's effective to a point, but vaguely hollow at its core. --Jeff Shannon
Description
From M. Night Shyamalan, the writer/director of THE SIXTH SENSE and UNBREAKABLE, comes the story of the Hess family in Bucks County, Pennsylvania, who wake up one morning to find a 500-foot crop circle in their backyard. Graham Hess (Mel Gibson) and his family are told extraterrestrials are responsible for the sign in their field. They watch, with growing dread, the news of crop circles being found all over the world. SIGNS is the emotional story of one family on one farm as they encounter the terrifying last moments of life as the world is being invaded. "It's easy for a filmmaker to blow up the world -- but what Shyamalan does is much riskier. He tries to blow our minds. I was engaged by every inch of SIGNS." - Richard Roeper, Ebert & Roeper.

THE WAY TO TELL THE WORLD THAT THEY'RE OUT THERE!!.......2007-09-02
i loved this movie, the whole deal. peaceful community, normal family, then bam, a huge crop circle right on thier farm. what is it? where did it come from? who made it? not human, they're watching, and they're coming, but not in peace. this movies got great suspense, good visual, and the aliens look crazy freaky. every time i watch it it still gets me. mostly because all this about crop circles is for real, it's based on real life events. so then what's going to happen in the future. who knows? mel gibson is a great actor no doubt and in this film it shows, as with joaquin phoenix great actor as well. love him. once again m. night shyamalan knows how to do it. he tries to bring more than others to the table through his films and he always succeeds. great job.
Great movie and some good extra features!.......2007-08-04
The movie was great. When I got a gift card for Christmas one year I knew this was the DVD I wanted to buy. It's one of M Night Shyamalan's best movies (I even think it was better than Sixth Sense).
The DVD has an neat bonus footage on it - like a movie made by MNS when he was a kid. It's great to see his vision as a child and how far he has grown. The DVD also has a nice story board to scene feature for certain parts of the movie. It's kinda neat to see how the finished product stacked up against the story boards.
However with a movie with this much humor I would have loved to seen some bloopers or outtakes. But then again I say that about every movie.
My favorite M. Night Shyamalan film........2007-07-31
I love thrillers, sci-fi, and spiritual/moral dilemma films and who would think that one film would have all that I grave.
Amazon gives a good snynopsis of the story, so no need to repeat it here, but I greatly disagree with their notion that this film is somewhat hollow or empty which I find ironic after they mention all this film is about and the crisis of faith that comes to a head with Mel Gibson's fallen minister character. This film is extremely well-written, outstandingly acted by all familiar actors who disappear into their roles, and effectively directed by Shyamalan who also wrote the film. James Newton Howard, ER and The Sixth Sense, created the memorable and haunting score which greatly added to the atmosphere of the film. In addition, the special effects and make-up team, guided by Shyamalan's vision and direction, created chills and believability without massive Spielberg-style (War of the Worlds) treatment which would have been only a distraction in this film.
My only real criticism is that this film has Shyamalan's trademark approach. That means that it's all rather contrived and he hammers us at the end for not seeing the ending coming (yet again, a la The Sixth Sense and Unbreakable). However, to pick on this element of his directorial/writing style is like picking on Hitchcock's use of suspense in his classic films.
This film has great repeat value even after knowing how the "signs" all add up. This is one of my absolute favorite films of all time. You may not enjoy it as much as I did, but I sincerely believe that most will enjoy this film for one reason or another.
Are you the type who sees signs?.......2007-06-18
Signs has much more to offer than Orson Welles' "War of the Worlds." In this reality, the world is populated with numerous signs seemingly hidden in plain sight.
Director M. Night Shyamalan divides people into two camps: The type who believes in miracles, sees signs; and those who think we just get lucky.
Shyamalan's carefully crafted universe has creatures that must resort to warring with other planets to survive... and there is us. Shyamalan's war pits technologically superior creatures against an unsuspecting world, and a shattered world occupied by a clergyman who questions his faith following the death of his wife. Shyamalan goes further than the Sixth Sense, the bone-chilling tale of a young boy ("I see dead people") haunted by ghosts who appear regularly in his life to enlist his help. In Signs, Shyamalan declares not only can we help the dead, the dead also help us.
Another way of putting it: There are no coincidences. From the son's asthma and the daughter's dreams to the brother's baseball prowess and the tragic instance in which a veterinarian's momentary lapse at the wheel claims a life. The plot is a masterpiece in misdirection. Signs opens to an aerial view of crop circles. More signs of the impending invasion appear as the story moves forward. But these are not the signs that we should be looking at. In the last reel, the dying wife who has but a moment to tell seems to be rambling. But it turns out, she was staring into the future, not her husband's eyes.
This movie says we are much more than we seem.
Mel Gibson's character, the grieving Rev. Graham Hess finds himself suddenly struggling to make sense of the many odd happenings at his farm. He already has isolated himself following his wife's death. Of course, his guard is up. But he finds himself awkwardly grasping to cling to his understanding of the new reality. He can dismiss the crop circles in his fields as mischief by pranksters. But, he soon can't deny the mounting evidence and nocturnal visits from unseen and unseeable intruders. Edgy, provocative and well-paced, Signs is a multilayered and intricately woven piece to try and digest in an afternoon at the theater.
I was first struck by Shyamalan's study of how his characters cope with the increasingly apparent threat. The no-nonsense son Morgan immediately seeks out a book and a curious and chilling element to this story, a baby monitor. The brother Merrill who has taken a room over the garage to help the family turns to the TV. The youngest, the girl who must be about kindergarten age, believes she is dreaming. It is the father, Graham, who is not coping well living in denial. But who can blame him?
"There is no one out there to help us. We're all alone," our resigned and frockless clergyman declares.
The final scenes are well-constructed to induce fear. Shyamalan masterfully pulls all the pieces together at the end. If you were impressed by Sixth Sense and Unbreakable, you will enjoy this offering... again and again.
An excellent film from theSci-Fi genre.......2007-06-13
This is one of those films that my wife dragged me kicking and screaming to see in the theater, but as has often been the case over our thirty-six year marriage, it turned out to be one that I would end up adding to my collection.
Normally, Science-Fiction films either bore me greatly, or scare me out of my wits, but this story is quite different. Not only is this a well-made, tense and exciting story of an attempted alien invasion of Earth, but it is also a very touching and actually inspirational story. Mel Gibson plays a former minister who totally lost his faith as the result of his wife's tragic death, but eventually finds it once again as a result of an exciting encounter with aliens. Beginning with the appearance of "crop circles" in his corn field, then in other locales around the world, followed soon by other strange "signs," Gibson finds himself trapped by the aliens in his home, with his two small children and his younger brother, played well by Joaquin Phoenix.
If you have not seen the film, do so. If you have not added it to your collection, do so. The climax alone is worth the purchase price, and it is surely a film you can watch with your children.

Wonderful!!.......2007-09-16
This was given to us as a gift! Our son loves it and so do we!! We do not freely let our son watch T.V. or videos, but we love this series!
Our son signed before watching these, but the videos enhanced his skills and taught him new ones.
We also love the music!! Our son dances and signs to the music!
Signing Time Volume 4.......2007-09-09

Great Family Fun.......2007-07-08
I get chills every time I hear the song about families in this Signing Time volume. It is such an uplifting program. Our entire family enjoys all of the DVDs is this phenomenal series. As a SAHM and former kindergarten teacher I highly recommend them for their educational value, in addition to their entertainment value. They have greatly enhanced my two year old's ability to communicate.
We love signing time.......2007-06-11
My kids love signing time!! My daughter Emma loved them so much she included Rachel, Lean and Alex in her prayers.
My daughter Anna has down syndrome and it has helped so much for her to know signs. It helped Emma learn to read and spell (by 2 1/2!) And helped my son John communicate before he started speaking.
Well worth it! Here is our business dedicated to my daughter Emma: [...]

My Baby Can Talk - First Signs.......2007-09-11
I bought this dvd for my grandson (4 years old now) when he was a few months old and he loved it! He was so happy to be able to communicate and be understood! I just purchased it for a 5 month old I take care of and when I turn it on he watches it with great interest! He doesn't yet understand the signs but he loves watching the babies and especially the puppets! We've started teaching him the eat, milk, drink and sleep signs and I'm sure he'll be communicating with us soon! Just because babies can't talk doesn't mean they can't communicate. They are intelligent beings and signing is the perfect tool to teach them a language they understand. This dvd teaches important basics.
Learned signs very quickly.......2007-08-28
I have been trying to do baby signs with my daughter since she was about 6 months old with so so results. She knew milk and more - but I had trouble remembering to show her the signs. I decided to buy this DVD one day while at Baby's R US.
First of all, my daughter will stop what she is doing and watch this dvd. Although not often, I have even played this for her twice in a row and she will stay engaged.
Second, as a 13-month-old, she started learning new signs after watching this twice. I already purchased the second dvd and I am hopeful that I will have similar results.
The Best Purchase of All.......2007-07-26
My son is 8 months old, and we have been watching these for about two months. They are truly the best purchase I have made. I tried Baby Einstein. He didn't care for it. Too fast? No context? Not sure. But he didn't like them (I found them kind of boring, myself.) But these? He has sat still (a rare occurrence) to watch from day one. He watches with great intent, often laughs ... is totally engaged. They also work to calm him when he is fussy. He truly loves them. I love them, because he is learning language. Not just sign language. He has picked up on "milk" and "airplane" and I'm sure more will follow. We watch at least once a day, sometimes more. And, after two months, I haven't gone totally crazy listening to the same thing over and over! I came to the site looking to see if there were any others available ... just for a change of pace :) Truly wonderful products.
Update: My son in now nearing 15 months, and his language skills are, by all accounts, startling. Multiple syllables, combining words, and a pretty large vocabulary (peaches, apple, apple sauce, apple juice, tractor, engine ... plus standards like dog, car, mama, daddy, opa, oma ... and names ... the list goes on) I truly attribute this to the fact that he was introduced early, and in such an effective way, to the concept of language.
amazing series.......2007-06-14
WONDERFUL
< WONDERFUL WONDERFUL, all parents should get this for their babies/toddlers. Our daughter has just thrived on these 2 dvd's by mybabycantalk.com What a wonderful set. Get them BOTH. We only wish they would make MORE dvd's with more ASL-signing words for them to learn like this. She picked up the signs so quickly.
This is helping my daughter learn her signs.......2007-06-13
We're pleased with this DVD - it holds my daughter's attention and has helped her with learning signs. I'm surprised words like mom and dad are not included, and dinosaur is. But overall, my duaghter enjoys it, she is learning, and we're very happy with this purchase.

A Really Fun, Cartoony Show- School the Way I Wish It Had Been!.......2007-09-07
I am an adult, I must confess. I was channel surfing once and discovered Ned and company. I had never seen a "kid's show" that was so silly and fun (actually, most of what I enjoy would be labeled kid's shows, such as SpongeBob and Invader Zim). "Ned's Declassified" is so jam-packed with slapstick and sound effects and amazing background music cues. It was like watching those Warner Brothers cartoons. I was smitten instantly.
This extended season finale is the most recent episode to air on Nickelodeon. I really hope they will do more seasons. You never know what crazy things will happen at this school. There's never a dull moment. Great viewing for school kids (and big kids, like me, too).
I hope they'll release full seasons on dvd.
A nice end to fun TV series.......2007-08-22
This is the last episode (a double-episode actually) of Ned's Declassified School Survival Guide that first aired on June 8, 2007.
Like the rest of the series, this is a light-hearted look at middle-school through the eyes of Ned, Cookie, and Moze. The class goes on a field trip to the fictional Huffington Library and most of the story takes place on location -- a first for the series and a nice change. (Though the library is based on Huntington Gardens in Pasadena, CA, the episode was actually shot at Descanso Gardens in La Cañada Flintridge, CA.)
Does Ned end up with Suzy or Moze? You'll have to tune in to find out but, its worth the wait.

Awesome video.......2007-07-13
I thought this was a really effective learning product. You are able to rewind if you miss something and the more you play it the better you get. They teach a wide variety of words in sign and I found this to be excellent. Do not buy the other DVD "Say it with Sign". It is not as well put together and it is very repetive. I found it to be confusing and useless. This one is awesome.
Packed with signs and very structured.......2004-07-26

I am a beginner in sign language. This DVD is really the only "lesson" I've had in sign language.
This program is great! It is jam-packed with vocabulary - they teach you around 800 signs! The content and lessons are very well organized and structured.
The host of the show is a deaf woman signing ASL. The co-host is a man signing in English grammar structure. I love it that just about everyone on this DVD signs every word they speak. The host signs as a background voice translates for the viewer. This way you pick up more words as you watch the lessons over and over; you also get to see people interacting in sign language, putting it all together, instead of just learning a bunch of signs. Everyone signs at normal signing speed, so at first it is overwhelming. But as I have watched the program over and over, I can now pick out a lot of what they are signing.
I only noticed two drawbacks of this program. One, the speed at which they sign the signs they are teaching you. I had to rewind a few times for the more complex ones. Two, during a couple of the skits the person "learning" signs from the deaf person didn't sign the exact same way. They did it backwards or with a different hand. I'm totally new to ASL, so I don't know how much precision is expected. It is confusing for a beginner either way.
Despite the two small drawbacks, I give this program 5 stars. I am definitely buying the second volume!

Wonderful for teaching children and adults!.......2007-08-23
My granddaughter who is 2 loves these and she can now sign well over 100 words and is learning her alphabet. She can say her alphabet and try's to sign them as she says them. It has created a wonderful bonding time for her and I. We will talk to each other in sign. It is so fun!She has been learning with these since she was 6 months. Never to early to start.
WONDERFUL!.......2007-08-14
My 2 year old loves all the Signing Time videos we have, and the sign language has helped us out 10 fold since he was about 5 months. I would recommend all the signing time videos to ANYBODY if you are interested at all in learning sign language, and especially if you have children at home. A super easy to learn format, lots of music and fun visuals for kiddos. Signing time has got to be the best product I have ever come across for my family.
Fantastic.......2007-07-29
My 2 1/2 year old son has PDD and this entire series of DVDs has helped tremendously in our efforts to learn sign language. My son's attention span is generally limited, but he'll sit down and watch an entire Signing Time DVD. What's move important, he retains what he learns. This series is not just ment for people with special needs, it's for anyone who wants to learn ASL and the combination of music and demonstration is just wonderful.
Our Favorite.......2007-07-08
We are huge Signing Time Fans! We own almost all of the Signing Time Videos, but this is our very favorite! We have given it as a gift several times. The music is catchy and makes the signs very easy to learn. My son is two and knows all the words to all of the songs! I highly recommend this DVD!
Fantastic.......2007-02-01
My daughter (now 20 months) just loves signing time. Because she is in a dual language household (her grandmother speaks only Japanese), her language skills have been slow to develop. Signing has helped immensely with helping to communicate with her. All of the shows are her favorites.

Mom of Twins Review.......2007-09-09
My twin boys LOVE this video and asked for it frequently. We watched one of the two "My Baby Can Talk" videos nearly daily from about 6 months- 15 months. The boys became very adept at those signs and LOVED the video. We don't watch it nearly as often now that the boys are approaching two years of age. However, just last week, one of them saw a butterfly, but was unable to form the word, so he used the sign and got REALLY excited. It's been such a blessing to have them able to communicate using both words and signs.
Another great product.......2007-08-30
I just purchased the Sharing Signs for my daughter Campbell, who is now almost 17 months old. It is another hit! We had been teaching her most of that are on the video on our own(with help from your site!)and now she is using them more and learning lots. Now a trip to the zoo is more entertaining because I can make the proper sign for her to understand what she is looking at in the zoo. Thank you so much for another wonderful product.
My daughter loves this DVD.......2007-07-26
We bought "First Signs" when my daughter was about 10 months old and after about a month of watching the dvd every day after breakfast, she began using the signs. So, I bought the second DVD, "Sharing Signs," and a week after we started watching it, my daughter started using the new signs. Now, it's a part of our morning routine. I sign with the video and use the signs throughout the day. Now, she is 14 months old and she can sign about 20 words and she recognizes much more than that. She has even memorized the order of the signs so she will sign the next word right before it appears. Spooky, but she doesn't fuss as much as other non-signing babies and her grandparents get a kick out of getting her to sign at parties. My little girl loves the attention.
BUY IT!.......2007-05-19
I can't say enough about these DVD's - my son started with them a six months and knows almost all the signs on boths DVD's at 12 months. He even puts signs together like "more food" and "shirt bath" (when he wants to take off his shirt and get in the tub)
i'm not an advocate of letting kids watch tv - but make these DVDs an exception to your no tv rule. START YOUNG - don't wait until your kid is frustrated to start sign language!
great dvd.......2007-05-16
I love this dvd, more importantly, my son loves this dvd. He'll watch it the entire way through and is learning signs already, he is 15 months old and I've had the video a month. Sometimes I watch it with him, other times I put it in and he becomes so engrossed in it that I can actually get a few things done! He isn't much of a tv watcher, but this dvd holds his attention from the time I push play. The dvd shows an item (monkey, for instance)with a voice saying monkey, shows a woman signing monkey with a voice saying monkey, and shows numerous toy and real monkeys, a baby signing monkey, again shows a woman signing monkey with a voice saying monkey, and shows one more monkey before going on to the next word. This dvd has the signs for monkey, diaper, cracker, cereal, baby, sleep, mommy, daddy, please, thank you, tree, bath, socks, and several more. I'm just writing this down from memory, so my list may not be completely accurate. I'm mostly interested in my son learning words so that I can understand when he is hungry or thirsty, between this dvd and the "My Baby Can Talk - First Signs" dvd, my son is learning most of what I consider the most useful signs.

great video, but it's definitely the first.......2007-07-28
this video doesn't have the fun songs nor does it feel as put together as the later ones. Still, she loves to watch it and has learned to sign "Cat" and "ball", etc. from watching this. We love to have her watch these videos. I just wish they weren't so expensive so I could buy more of them!
Signing Times.......2007-07-09
This DVD is very good at demonstrating the signs. What it doesn't do however, is talk about how to introduce the signs to your baby. I wish there was a section that described how/when to use the signs with your baby. The DVD only shows how to make the signs.
Thrilled Grandma.......2007-07-04
I purchased this DVD for my grandson who is autistic. While not every autistic person responds to signing, my grandson does. so far, the results are fantastic! In three weeks his vocabulary has increased by nearly 50%, using both the signs and speaking the words. His parents are completely thrilled by the results. Another plus, his 2 year old sister's vocabulary has increased as well. I will eventually buy the whole set for them. Thanks so much Rachel and company!!
My toddler can't get enough of signing time!.......2007-06-23
We have had the Signing Time videos for a year and a half. We own 8 of the videos. My son loves to watch these videos, and he asks me through signing to watch them often. My husband and I use the signs during the day as well. My son started signing at 13 months. He is now almost 2. At a recent family gathering I got many positive comments on my son's use of sign language. Many people told me that they have heard of babies and toddlers using sign language, but my son was the first baby they had actually witnessed using it. I really credit Signing Time for that.
You are certainly not going to become fluent in sign language by watching these videos. You will learn signs that your child will actually use such as; milk, water, dog, cat, mom and dad. If you continue with the series you will learn many more food signs, family signs, colors, numbers, animals, and feelings. These are all common words in a toddler's vocabluary.
Also, some people have expressed concerns that children who sign may not speak. This has not been my experience. My son says the word as he signs it. I highly recommend the whole Signing Time series to anyone who wants to learn basic signs to improve communication with theri baby or toddler.
Signing Time Vol. 1 ,2 & 3.......2007-05-24
We love the Signing Time DVDs! It grabs your attention right from the beginning. The music is great and hearing the children's voices keeps my granddaughters attention. While at the grocery store, she signed apple which is not a word we taught her, she had learned it from the Signing Time DVD. I just ordered Volumes 4&5.

More Propaganda.......2007-09-07
Get the Great Global Warming Swindle for the real deal on the Global Warming debate. You can get it on DVD from Amazon's UK site.
Isn't it Ironic, Don't You Think? .......2007-07-26
Boy, I sure am glad they got the scientific genius Alanis Morissette to preach to us on this DVD, but I think the shallowness of this selection is made clear by its one-sided examination of global warming. There is no diverse perspective here and no critics of the "scientific consensus" were even consulted. This immediately decreased its credibility with me. Everyone should have been a little taken back, however, by the documentary's hilarious politically correct angle by which "people of color" are more affected by climate change than anyone else. What a ridiculous thing to say. If the worst of these gloom and doom scenarios play out then there won't be anything left of any of us regardless of the individual melanin contents of our skin. Furthermore, air purity standards have improved over the course of the last decade which is a fact this documentary fails to reveal. Strategically, the documentary implies that the US was the only country not to sign the Kyoto Treaty but 155 other countries failed to do so as well. As for the signatories, not one is lowering carbon levels as a result of the protocol. The idea that we can set an example in the west and have it followed by communist China is risible. The Chinese or the Indians are going to go along with any global protocols like Kyoto. Here's another climate change movie rooted in the blame America first philosophy.
Just like "An Inconvenient Lie".......2007-04-18
There's no proof that global warming is caused by human activity or greenhouse gases. Every follower of the global warming religion (it's a religion because it requires an immense leap of faith) chooses to ignore the evidence that does not suit his/her ideology. The fact of the matter is that global warming existed long before humans even inhabited this planet, much less were polluting it. What does it tell you about how seriously Al Gore is taking the problem if he is still consuming energy at about 20 times the national average? Saying that humans are responsible for global warming is a cash cow for Gore and his cronies but if they were really scared, they wouldn't just preach conservation, they would practice it as well.
Sir Nicolas Stern is one of the high priests of this godless religion. In support of his gloomy thesis, Stern, like all global warming enthusiasts, ignores the evidence that does not suit his ideology. He glosses over the fact that, according to a host of historical accounts, Europe was far warmer in the Middle Ages than it is today, or that the 17th century was much colder, prompting what was known as 'The Little Ice Age', when the Thames was often frozen over for months at a time.
Stern also refers to 'significant melting of and an acceleration of ice floes' near the coast of Greenland because of global warming.
Yet several reputable scientific studies have shown that the mass of the Greenland ice sheet is actually expanding, while Stern also fails to note that the temperature of Greenland is now lower than it was in 1940 and little changed from the first measurements in the 1780s.
Environmentalists are fond of jerking heartstrings with pictures of polar bears struggling on supposedly melting icebergs, but it is estimated that there are now 22,000 polar bears compared with 5,000 in 1940.
Nor can we be sure that any long-term changes in our climate are due to mankind. There are any number of other possibilities and the programme tonight examines the possibility that the sun's radiation is primarily responsible for climate change.
Indeed, the climate can fluctuate without any external cause at all -- something again ignored by Stern, who wants only to indulge in the fashionable notion that western capitalism is entirely to blame for every drought and disaster.
Further, Stern takes no account of the capacity of mankind to adapt to, and improve his, environment.
There can be little dispute that, more than a century after the peak of the 19th-century industrial revolution, Britain is a cleaner, healthier, less polluted country than it was in the late Victorian age, when smog, disease and slums were rife.
Genuine science is about gathering evidence and testing the veracity of theories, not cheerleading for a particular ideology.
That is what is so disturbing about the current debate on global warming. Healthy scepticism, which should be at the heart of all scientific inquiry, is treated with contempt.
Far from being the powerful masterpiece that Blair claimed, Stern's report is manifestly incompetent.
It is another dodgy dossier, where assertions are presented as facts and data is twisted to suit a political purpose.
I agree with the economist critic who noted: 'If a student of mine were to hand in this report as a masters thesis, perhaps if I were in a good mood, I would give him D for diligence, but more likely I would give him an F for fail.' We are shifting away from science and into the realm of religious fanaticism, where the followers of the creed, brimming with self-righteous fury, believe that they are in possession of a higher truth.
Like a religion, environmentalism is suffused with hatred for the material world and again, like religion, it requires devotion rather than intellectual rigour from its adherents.
It is intolerant of dissent; those who question the message of doom are regarded as heretics, or 'climate change deniers', to use green parlance.
And, just as in many religions, the route to personal salvation lies in the performance of superstitious rituals, such as changing a lightbulb or arranging for a tree to be planted after every plane journey.
What is so tragic is the way that this dubious ideology has achieved such dominance in our public life.
Politicians love the green agenda, of course, because it means more control, more regulation, more taxes, more summits, and more opportunities for displays of self-important zeal.
The tragedy is that the likes of Sir Nicholas Stern are using bogus science to push forward this agenda.
Convincing images and scientific comments.......2007-03-09
I am a K-12 school librarian and am launching an awareness project about the environment, with global warming as a key topic. I needed a documentary about global warming for secondary level students.
I had proposed that all teachers watch "An inconvenient Truth" for their own information, and was confronted with one typical negative reaction: "Al Gore has an agenda, this is politics in school and I will not admit that. I want scientific, objective information". Although I do not agree with this reaction at all, I thought that I might as well look for something else, since I think that "An Inconvenient Truth" is not the ideal first step to raise awareness among the younger students. And there I ordered the PBS "Global Warming" documentary. Alanis Morissette is a very articulate speaker, clear and convincing. The construction and contents of the film, with very interesting interviews with diverse scientists give an excellent overview of the issue.
This DVD and "An inconvenient Truth are important eye-openers for us all!
Stuoendous!.......2007-01-09
