Perhaps neither man is what he seems to be as director Fred Zinnemann (The Day of the Jackal) guides a searing Act of Violence, "the first postwar noir to take a challenging look at the ethics of men in combat" (Eddie Muller, Dark City: The Lost World of Film Noir). Murder lives on Mystery Street. Welcome to CSI Noir.

The Warner film noir box sets are some of the best deals going -- great collections of great films in great transfers with often great commentaries. If you're a film noir addict you'll go nuts over these reasonably priced sets -- if you're not you'll quickly become one. All four sets are stupendous entertainment bargains.

Ten classic film noir all come with informative commentaries. No need to say more. Another decent film noir boxset presented by WB Home Video.

An economic crisis brings unemployed Nada (Roddy Piper) to L.A. in search of work. What he finds instead is that the ruling elite of the world are aliens in disguise, their aim being to keep humans in a state of mindless consumerism. His discovery comes when he dons a pair of special sunglasses made by a resistance group and sees for the first time reality unadorned. Billboards, store signs, magazine covers--all bear subliminal messages to OBEY, to CONSUME, to have NO INDEPENDENT THOUGHT. Money itself says THIS IS YOUR GOD. But worst of all, with these glasses you see which of us are really hideous, bug-eyed aliens. The conceptual breakthrough is hilarious while keeping its roots in darker matters. Although some fault the film for settling into its action plot, the ending has a great payoff. And the direction by John Carpenter is handled with superb workmanlike aplomb. One unforgettable set piece has Piper in a back-alley fistfight with a friend who won't put on the glasses that goes on and on, and just when you think it's over it goes another round. One of the most subversive films ever made in Hollywood, They Live was released on the eve of the 1988 elections. The first TV ads had two hideous alien politicians debating, then one accusing the other of being "No John Kennedy!" --Jim Gay

5 out of 5 stars Inside the expectations.......2007-09-04

I wanted to see this movie again. It went on here in Brazil only once on Tv and never got released on Theater or Vídeo. It is very good. I love to see the subliminar messages... It is how I feel in the real world.

5 out of 5 stars i loves this movie even more today 19 years latter.......2007-08-31

i had forgoten a bit about this movie (i had an old vhs copie from 10 years ago) just got the dvd and i thaught this movie (again) was great.
rodie piper does a great job (did he do any other movies??) its a good storie with (i think) great effex + john carpenter did the soundtrack that is not as good as halloween but still great . I think this movie has the best one liner of all time (sorry bruce campbell) watch wath he says when he gets in the bank with his guns..... hillarious !!! ok so no xtra on this version but for the price you pay ....its not that bad.

5 out of 5 stars Worth it for the fight scene alone!.......2007-08-21

I definitely am biased as this is one of my favorite movies since childhood. However, if you purchase this movie I guarentee you won't be upset.

"They Live" just screams "B Movie" but the cast all do a great job. The movie itself is nowhere near realistic and is kind of ridiculous to be honest, but I think that's why it's so great. It's entertaining, has a ton of catch phrases, lots of action, and a ridiculous 10 minute fight scene that was popular enough to be ridiculed move-by-move in the TV show South Park (as "Cripple Fight"). If you don't laugh during that fight scene you need to see a psychoogist

Do yourself a favor and buy this movie now!

4 out of 5 stars Searing documentary about the Bush Administration?.......2007-08-16

An in-depth, unvarnished look at the inner workings of Bush, Cheney and the rest of the gang. If only we all really had the special sunglasses! So for now we only get to see the Bush administration portrayed by actors, some with great alien make-up! The movie is sly, cool and sooo interesting. Roddy Piper is perfectly cast as a drifter, who inadvertently discovers aliens and their massive propaganda campaign against us. And it's so true to life it's almost non-fiction! This is also a fun flick that never gets boring, even after multiple viewings. The premise is so simple that it's cunning. This one's a keeper. And I think they sell the sunglasses at the 99 cent store! You are getting sleepy... repeat after me... Shop now... Disregard the Bill of Rights, the Constitution... Obey... Buy this movie... NOW.

4 out of 5 stars "Rowdy" Roddy Piper put down the bagpipes and should have picked up an oscar.......2007-08-10

When the star of the show is Hot Rod, you pretty much know where its going. Yeah, straight to VHS. But that's exactly how we, Sid the Elf, like it baby. We have to give it to Piper on this one, he totally fufilled all expectations. His acting was so pitiful, spouting tough quotes like, "I came here to chew bubble gum and kick [butt]." He went on and on with these gems for the first half of this one. He found his magical ray-bans and went to work taking out every alien in sight. Just like in his old ring days, he was an absolute one man wrecking crew. Only instead of being in the Scottish kilt wearing form we were used to, he portrays a flannel wearing, mullet sporting drifter. Which actually fit him quite nicely.

So, the basic plot was that Piper stumbled upon these shades. And when he put them on, he could tell who were normal people, and who were the brainwashing aliens. Piper and George 'Buck' Flower, a charter member of the all-time "That Guy" team, let the real people live and figure four leg locked the aliens into submission. The goofy factor jumped at least 5 spots because the loser who wrote it was trying to get across his tortured view of our twisted society. And if you're trying to do that, who's your vehicle baby?....You got it, "Rowdy" Roddy Piper. I think he even had a Piper's Pit about the very same topic once. Anyway, one hillarious thing about this one was Piper getting smashed over the head with a beer bottle, getting pushed out a window, rolling down a hill, then getting up like he tripped over an untied shoelace. And another was a totally unnecessary 20 minute awful fight scene in the middle. Both were prime examples of the B powerhouse that this film was.

To sum it all up, They Live was high caliber B. It absolutely gets the Sid the Elf Seal of Approval, and is essential to your summer B lineup. It wins the World Heavyweight Championship of B Sci-Fi.

Almost 40 years after the band's original formation, Deep Purple is in fine form in They All Came Down to Montreux. The band's history is intimately connected with the legendary Montreux Jazz Festival (which also includes rock music), so it was only fitting that DP was invited to headline the closing night of the festival's 40th anniversary on July 15, 2006. On disc 1 of this two-disc set, DP's 100-minute Montreux gig is included in its entirety, and even those who prefer the band's earlier "Mark II" lineup (which included previous keyboardist John Lord and guitarist Ritchie Blackmore) will agree that this band can still rock your socks off. By the time keyboardist Don Airey launches a playfully jazzy prologue to the band's biggest hit "Smoke on the Water" (a song inspired by a spectacular fire that occurred while the band was preparing to record Machine Head in Montreux in 1971), DP has the packed Montreux in an arm-waving state of hard-rock bliss.

While it's obvious that lead singer Ian Gillan's voice is not what it used to be (he's obviously struggling with the high notes in "Highway Star"), he still makes it through the set with his vocal cords intact, and he's got stellar support from Airey, bassist Roger Glover, drummer Ian Paice, and guitarist Steve Morse (the latter joined DP in 1994), all delivering the kind of ace musicianship that can only come from years of diligent touring. Morse is especially strong in this concert, while Glover and Paice achieve a flawless symmetry of rhythm. And while this is essentially a "greatest hits" gig, the performance of tracks from DP's 2005 release Rapture of the Deep suggests that this band could be going strong for years to come, if fans don't mind the occasional misstep and a stage full of aging rockers with expanding waistlines. As a bonus feature, 25 minutes of band interviews are also included. Disc 2 features an hour-long gig from London's Hard Rock Café, recorded earlier in 2006. With the exception of two tracks ("I Got Your Number" and "Fireball"), it's a shorter version of the Montreux set-list, more intimate in its club setting, but equally indicative of Deep Purple's impressive longevity. --Jeff Shannon

Description

Few bands are more closely associated with Montreux than Deep Purple and there was simply no other contender when it came to choosing the act to headline the closing night of the 40th Montreux Festival in 2006. The band duly delivered one of their finest live performances, sprinkling songs from their latest album "Rapture Of The Deep" through a set chock full of their classic tracks. There was even a brand new song "Too Much Fun" written especially for the occasion and, of course, a show-stopping performance of "Smoke On The Water".

A companion CD with highlights from this show is being simultaneously released.

5 out of 5 stars Deep Purple Live at it's Best.......2007-09-05

I have been a Deep Purple fan for over 25 years and own many records, cds and dvds of them in concert. This particular dvd is one of their best period. Whenever Deep Purple plays at Montreux, it is bound to be a special event, and this show lives up to any expectation anyone could have. The band is tight w/ all their arrengments yet loose enough that they can improvise on some of their most known and popular songs and maintain the essence of what Deep Purple has always been. Steve Morse's guitar playing is immpecable, presice and fluid. Don Airey had some big shoes to fill w/ the departure of Jon Lord, but he shows on this dvd that he is on par w/ any keybord player in the history of rock music (as well as classical and jazz). Ian Gillan's legendary voice still rocks like it did when he first sang about the Montreux Jazz Festival back in '71. Ian Pace and Roger Glover show us why they still are one of the best drum and bass combos ever. In short, if you are a Deep Purple fan you will like this dvd. After all, can the 40th Anniversay of the Montreux Jass Festival get any better then Deep Purple headlining it?

5 out of 5 stars Nice - (2) DVD set .......2007-08-15

Best live jam band ever. I must have 9 or 10 live versions of "Smoke On the Water" on DVD. Every live performance is a little different and has a charm of it's own. I love em all.

Now I must say, I held back on buying this one. Well I held off on Perihelion too, but I just had to get Jon Lord's last performance on DVD. Now, he is gone? Another loss like Blackmore? OK, I bit and ordered "They All Came Down to Montreux". Don Airey is one hell of a keyboard player, maybe not up to Lord's standard, but who is? Ian Gillan is getting a little long-on-the-tooth, but the old fart can still carry a tune pretty dang good. Hey, these guy's are about my age, so I grew up with DP - got "Hush" on a 45. Speaking of "Hush". They did the BEST "Hush" version on this DVD I've heard.

It's taking them a little longer to warm up these days, but by the time they get to "When A Blind Man Cries" the groove sets in. The two guest stars they brought in towards the end of the set were awesome.

The bonus DVD, well another hour of DP live. I can't argue with that. So, what your getting is about (3) hours of DP in concert in total. Sweet.

The quality is outstanding. I didn't get the HD-DVD version, but the standard DVD is pretty close to HD standards. really!

If you like DP, they got a bunch of great DVD's for sale. They are getting on with age so if that's a problem for you, buy some of their earlier stuff first. Then when you still want that DP fix, get this one too. Add it to your collection, you will play it many times over in the future.

2 out of 5 stars I miss the old Deep Purple..........2007-07-22

I couldn't wait to watch this! But, I was kind of disappointed. While musically this album was good, I can't help but miss the old Deep Purple with Ritchie Blackmore and Jon Lord. This wasn't the group I remembered. To me they just didn't seem to have it anymore---that hard driving sound that made them famous. Oh please, Smoke on the Water (on the Live at Montreux DVD) almost put me to sleep! I loved the group, but please, it's time to retire...

5 out of 5 stars Muy bueno.......2007-07-05

Excelente imagen y sonido, hay una version de Smoke on the water estilo jazz muy buena.
Deep Purple unos grandes del rock n roll

5 out of 5 stars Old Geezers Deliver.......2007-06-28

This as good as it gets in modern DVD concerts, and it's getting there with one of the classic hard rock/metal bands in history. The video and sound is incredible, a real treat on my simple 5.1 system with HiDef monitor.

For a bunch of old farts, DP still kicks some serius arse. I think Ian Gillan even blows a nut trying to sing Highway Star (and quickly runs back stage to re-group during the following instrumental). The band is spot on, all night, as Gillan joins mainstays Roger Glover, and Ian Paice, in addition to Don Airy on Keyboards and Steve Morse keeping the Blackmore feel alive.

Excellent video editing, no flashing MTV 2-second bull crap here. The camera's pointing where it should, especially during solos, and stays there. The band is having fun, it's obvious throughout the concert, and you'll have fun following along with a bunch of old geezers rocking out to your heart's delight.

Errol Flynn is one of those names that define movie stardom. Chiseled good looks that stopped just short of being preposterous. A brash and jaunty manner that charmed men and women alike. Whiffs of bad-boy scandal offscreen that only enhanced his legend (not for nothing did "In like Flynn" become a national catchphrase!). And enough marquee-worthy titles that in memory's ear ring like classics.

Flynn's stardom wasn't on a par with the richly ambiguous artistry of Cary Grant, or the deep, enduring heroic legacy of John Wayne, or the indelible character work amassed by Flynn's Warner Bros. contemporaries Humphrey Bogart, James Cagney, and Edward G. Robinson. Still, this most celebrated of Tasmanian devils was a one-of-a-kind, often raffishly entertaining icon of Hollywood in the '30s and '40s who played a big part in making the golden age glow. And for most of us, to say "swashbuckler" is to conjure up Flynn's wolfish grin above a rapier, director Mike Curtiz's wall-filling shadows of dueling men, and the symphonic, trumpet-filled music scores of Erich Wolfgang Korngold.

Stardom came swiftly. After two small-part assignments at Warners, the studio awarded Flynn the title role in Captain Blood (1935)--in retrospect, a sort of rough draft for his most beloved movie, The Adventures of Robin Hood (1938; not in this collection). The hero, an Irish-born physician wrongly convicted of treason during the reign of King James, is sentenced to a life of slavery in Jamaica. In short order he's charmed his new master's niece (the bright-eyed Olivia De Havilland, Maid Marian-to-be) and contrived an escape with his rebel comrades to become lusty, albeit passionately populist, buccaneers. The film's budget was clearly limited (there's a stark absence of horizons in the tropic and seagoing scenes), but director Curtiz's camerawork cunningly evokes the ever-present tilting and rolling of life aboard ship. Much-Oscar-nominated, the movie certified Flynn as the Douglas Fairbanks of the sound era--even in blond tresses and without what would become his signatory mustache.

If Captain Blood became the Flynn-Curtiz prototype for swashbucklers, The Sea Hawk was the last, luxury model off the line. Warners was always wired in to the zeitgeist, and this 1940 movie about English privateers saving Queen Elizabeth's island nation from the Spanish Armada does double duty as an in-Der-Fuehrer's-face allegory of the looming world war. No blank horizons here, and every wall sports a towering map of a world ripe for conquest. Slickness is all: Claude Rains and Henry Daniell are impeccably devious diplomats, and Sol Polito's black-and-white cinematography shifts into sultry sepiatone when the Sea Hawks sneak off to the tropics on a transatlantic espionage mission. (As for Flynn's mission, his swashbuckling would hereafter be confined to contemporary war pictures for the duration.)

He also saddled up for some lively Westerns. Dodge City (1939) is a knock-down, drag-out barn-burner in brassy Technicolor, with Flynn as a trail boss reluctantly turned town marshal. Curtiz directs yet again, with flair if not necessarily historical conviction, and the presence of Robin Hood costars Olivia De Havilland and Alan Hale (Little John) is virtually mandatory by this point. Ripe villainy is supplied by Bruce Cabot and--substituting, perhaps, for the un-frontier-worthy Basil Rathbone--the fox-faced Victor Jory.

They Died with Their Boots On (1942) is filled with spectacular Civil War and cavalry action, though its hagiographic treatment of George Armstrong Custer should set historically enlightened viewers on the warpath. Nonetheless, it features Flynn's most interesting performance in the collection. Whereas Curtiz was the ideal director for the star in boy's-own-adventure mode, Raoul Walsh elicited more nuanced work from him (see especially their wonderful Gentleman Jim, not included in this collection), and the scenes between Flynn and Olivia De Havilland achieve a tenderness that deepens with each reel. The magic-hour cinematography is by veteran John Ford cameraman Bert Glennon.

And that--apart from a new documentary feature, The Adventures of Errol Flynn--leaves The Private Lives of Elizabeth and Essex (1939). Sad to say, that doesn't leave much. Bette Davis (taking the role Flora Robson played in The Sea Hawk) and Flynn (as the English knight the not-so-Virgin Queen loved but feared as a rival) have zero chemistry; she delivers a mannered performance only a Bette Davis impersonator could love, and Flynn demonstrates how stiff he could be (no pun intended) when clueless about his material. In fairness to both, the movie is a static adaptation of a very repetitious and declamatory Maxwell Anderson play. Its inclusion here is notable only as a vast technical improvement on the long-ago VHS release. --Richard T. Jameson

5 out of 5 stars Swashbuckling at it's finest !.......2007-07-16

Errol Flynn certainly earned his place with the likes of Tyrone Power and Douglas Fairbanks. This collection is a must have for those who enjoy the rare cinema jewels of yesteryear. I rank this purchase among my favorites.

5 out of 5 stars Errol Flynn Signature Collection.......2007-06-08

I have loved Errol Flynn movies since I was a girl.He is the best looking pirate ever and in Robin Hood the green tights!Cowboy movies are great too!

5 out of 5 stars Errol Flynn deserves more professional recognition than the Academy ever gave him........2007-05-21

My favorite here is "They Died with Their Boots On". Yes, the history is all wrong, but watch as Flynn takes Custer from a prankster West Point plebe to a brave and focused military leader. de Havilland's acting is, again, superb. Her entrance scene shows her great comic timing. The chemistry between de Havilland and Flynn is jarring here, as each must have felt this was to be their final pairing on screen. Flynn's climb to her balcony and their embrace is reminiscient of their love scene in "Robin Hood." Watch how de Havilland and Flynn look at each other during the train ride scene. The Custer-Libby farewell is almost painful to watch. The intimacy of that scene makes me think I should not be watching such a private moment. As de Havilland (Libby) places his belt around Flynn's (Custer's) waist, he looks at her with such longing and sadness. Flynn as Custer to de Havilland's Libby:"Walking through life with you, ma'am, has been a very gracious thing." This is more than acting, as this pair brings their film and personal relationship full circle. The haunting love theme written by Max Steiner underscores the passion of Libby and George Custer. Why doesn't Warner Brothers release these movies on the big screen instead of the slasher movies that are released every year between the Oscar broadcast and the summer block-busters? I think they would bring in a large, multi-age audience.

An excellent addition to any video library.

If you like old movies then buy this boxed set. Here is the original action hero. After all these years he's still cool as hell. Great movies in this set at a very good price.

Although I thoroughly enjoy the music on Pavarotti & Friends For War Child, I could not play the CD as purchased on either of my CD players because it was in a 5.1 format. A friend copied it onto a disc I can play.
I feel that CD's purchased through your company should be in formats able to be used be the masses, instead of a select few that are able to have state-of-the-art machinery.
Other than that, I am extremely happy with your service (I was a first-time buyer), and with the CD as a whole. Thanks.

5 out of 5 stars An all-star presentation of life and survival!.......1999-07-12

Pavarotti and Friends for War Child is the second but not the last, of Pavarotti's efforts to make visible that which we would prefer to ignore. From his opening prayer of Holy Mother, he pleads for compassion. Eric Clapton's blues-trained voice melds effortlessly and makes us also want redemption and grace. Interestingly placed on the same theme is Joan Osborne's St Teresa. Joan sings of looking from the depths of desolation to a possible savior. Euro-pop tunes featured are poignant studies in our humanity and most are worth our listening. Pavorotti's collection ends with Live Like Horses-- Elton John's tribute to the life of Versace. He asks that we kick down our fences and move on! to live free and noble as does our equine friend. Thank you Pavarotti. Your wisdom and far-reaching voice beacons and then gently educates us. Our lives-- as the War Child's, WILL continue and evolve.

4 out of 5 stars "SIDE STREET" IS A FORGOTTEN GEM.......2007-07-22

Nicholas Ray's directoral debut, "THE LIVE BY NIGHT" (1948) is a poignant, noirish love story not unlike the much later "BONNIE AND CLYDE."

But the real gem in this double-feature DVD is Anthony Mann's "SIDE STREET" (1949), a gritty, compelling, crime drama that is a true film noir.

It follows the downward spiral of sympathetic, naive and desperate Farley Granger -- a letter carrier with a pregnant wife -- after he steals some money from a pair of very bad guys. Granger stashes the money with a "friend" and then decides to give it back -- but the friend has hit the road with the loot. The bad guys Granger stole from aren't amused. They are unrelenting in their pursuit of Granger.

The movie goes all the way with the premis. There's a terrific, extended, car chase that is strikingly photographed, perhaps a first of it's kind in a drama and clearly a model for the one in "BULLET."

This is a satisfying, taught film with beautifully composed, stark, BW location cinematography in lower Manhattan that perfectly matches the story. Location as metaphor! Highly recommended.

2 out of 5 stars not enough train wrecks.......2006-03-23

One of my favorite things about the early Trading Spaces, is how the expert designers would completely ignore the requests of the decoratees. (Please keep the carpet, it is only a year old. The decorator, "The carpet must go.") I hoped to see more of those in clips, like a highlights reel. This was not the case. This is just two episodes, although the second one when the woman is crying off camera after she just needs to be alone for a minute in the reveal made this CD worthwhile. I don't mean to sound uncharitable, but in the great scheme of life, bad interiordecoration is not a tragedy of overwhelming proportions, and it is part of the risk that makes the program enjoyable. If you are a huge Trading Spaces fan, purchase this, otherwise let it pass.

2 out of 5 stars my wife like this dvd........2005-08-10

But I no like so much. Is too much the same thing.

5 out of 5 stars For all of us who wondered!.......2005-01-21

We love Paige Davis and we love the designers, but sometimes we don't love what they do, and wonder how those homeowners can be so poised (with the exception of a few whose names we all know) in the face of Decor ala Disaster. Even if you've seen the episodes, this one is still fun to watch....to see what happened later!

1 out of 5 stars More like "They had a tepid reaction!".......2005-01-04

Thank goodness we checked this out from the library. We'd never seen Trading Spaces, but I was curious to see what all the fuss was about. Surely the extremely negative reactions that the cover blurb seemed to promise would provide us with the best encapsulation of the appeal of this show, right? WRONG. Nobody bursts into tears, nobody retches and runs from the room with their hand over their mouth, nobody threatens to firebomb their neighbors' homes in retaliation, nobody clenches their fists, throws back their head and bellows "WHYYYYYYYYY?!?" to an aloof and uncaring deity. In fact, pretty much every reaction is along the lines of, "Oh. Well. Maybe I'll get used to it..." If you love the idea of watching someone else's boring tract home being redecorated in order to view the homeowners' stoic, listless demeanors upon viewing the finished product, by all means, proceed. All others, steer clear of this dud.

5 out of 5 stars Sweet Revenge for Husbands.......2004-11-30

If you are a Trading Spaces widower, this is the DVD for you. You get to see who are the absolute worst designers, see people wretch, cry, throw their microphone off in disgust, gosh it is wonderful. Get it for your wife and re-bond your relationship together, as you watch the know-it-alls go down in flames, as you realize your home, your life is really not so bad after all. They should make this into a long running series - the most outrageous or ridiculous designer efforts. For once, my wife and I both truly enjoyed Trading Spaces episodes. I didn't even read the paper or look at my laptop. What a God send!!

Description

Shot at the Glass House in Pomona, home of speed labs and pit bull farms, this show is frightening. Fists are flying everywhere, back kicks are barely missing heads, and the band is punk, metal, and gothic all at the same time. They may have started as an offshoot from Huntington Beach's 18 Visions, but there is nothing off-shooty about this group. No extra charge for the stunningly beautiful keyboard player by the way. Hats off to Trustkill for developing this band into hard core superstardom. This will be their year as they are confirmed for the entire Ozzfest, featuring the best line up ever for that tour. **NON STANDARD PRICING**

    Description

They influence our decisions without us knowing it. They numb our senses without us feeling it. They control our lives without us realizing it. Horror master John Carpenter directs this action-packed sci-fi thriller about one man's battle against aliens who are systematically gaining control of the Earth.
