5 out of 5 stars Great title and mind blowing graphics.......2007-09-13

I've seen the title before but never in Blu-ray, and let me tell you its a whole new experience. The detail is something else and sound is great!! I can't wait for the second installment.

5 out of 5 stars Most underrated movie of the NEW millennium..........2007-09-10

I'll keep this short. Have you ever cried because a movie you loved was hated or ignored by everyone else? And that movie was obviously a work of art that took teams of artists years to create?

Well, that's how I felt when "Final Fantasy TSW" came out and died within a couple of weeks. I went to the premiere of this fine film. The theater was half-empty. I went again two weeks later, just before the movie disappeared from cineplexes. Would you believe I was THE ONLY person in the room?! When the eagle at the end soared away over the mountain range, I had to choke back angry tears. (The beautiful ending itself had caused the first upswell of tears.) Why was nobody else enjoying the show with me? And what a show it was! Great "acting" by the digitally created cast, especially the leads, restrained but believable dialogue, breath-taking visuals, and tight editing of a logical storyline that is so perfectly steamlined and simple it should never cause confusion. So why this tragedy of an empty theater after just two weeks?

First, many critics panned it, complained of wooden acting and a convoluted plot. They claimed the story was unoriginal; well, what other movie does it plagiarize? Apart from the stereotyped way the marines sometimes talk, what is unoriginal here? Second, the trailer was misleading; this is a moving love story, set against the spooky, solemn backdrop of a last-ditch attempt to repel an alien invasion and restore the Earth to humanity. The love is between Aki and Gray, who ultimately must love their planet enough to sacrifice their lives to save it. There is also credible caring between Dr. Sid and Aki, and Gray and his Deep-Eyes. But the trailer presented "Final Fantasy TSW" as a kind of juiced-up videogame. A rollercoaster thrill ride, which it is at times, but the human quality of the story is paramount. It's the only reason I would have seen this movie so many times, bought TWO copies on DVD, and now proudly own TWO copies of the Blu-ray release. It's definitely worth it.

Unfortunately, that will not bring back Square Pictures (closed up shop after the movie flopped) or reunite the gifted animators who brought the characters to life so memorably. I'm just doing my part to support one of my favourite movies, while thumbing my nose at certain small-minded critics and at the moviegoers who left me all alone in the theater (not that I really minded having the whole place to myself).

Lovers of this movie, UNITE! (And if you haven't seen it yet, by all means DO!)

3 out of 5 stars Amazing CG for it's release..........2007-08-28

But not so now... Ah, the progress of technology! "Sky Captain.." showed me that the CG bomb still lives on. I'm a nostalgic geek for past CG failures and so I Re-bought this on the BR format. I am one of the few who actually watched this in the theaters so it was a pleasure to experience it again in all it's hi-def sorta glory on my little theater back home. Pass the cheese please.

5 out of 5 stars One of the Best CG Movies Ever Comes to HD.......2007-08-13

It has been six years since thhis movie's release and it still stands as the benchmark for human CG animation. People hate on this movie, but I think it is a work of art, directed by a true genius (Hironobu Sakaguchi) one of the greatest game designers ever. It is sad this film bankrupted Square Pictures, but they did rise from the ashes to produce Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children so all was not lost. Besides the amazing animation, I love the story and characters, and the space sequences (especially the opening scene) are stunning in hi-def. Who knows when this movie will be topped technically, although Beowulf looks like it might give FF a run for its money.

Earth is a desolate wasteland in Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within. Humanity has been decimated by an invasion of Phantoms, insubstantial aliens that extract and devour the spirits of living things. The few remaining humans have retreated to a handful of cities that are protected by massive bio-energy shields. The beautiful Dr. Aki Ross (voiced by Ming-Na) and her mentor Dr. Sid (Donald Sutherland) have discovered that the energy signatures of eight key Earth spirits can cancel out and destroy the Phantoms. With the help of Captain Edwards (Alec Baldwin) and his band of marines, they must scour the globe for the last two remaining spirits before General Hein (James Woods) manipulates the refugee government into attacking the aliens with an orbital laser that may also destroy the Earth.

Hironobu Sakaguchi's film is taken from the popular Final Fantasy video game franchise, which is particularly well suited to film adaptation with its series of original stories, but the movie features entirely new characters and settings. And like Toy Story and Shrek, Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within is completely computer generated. Unlike those cartoon comedies, though, The Spirits Within is a serious science fiction drama with astonishingly human digital actors. Aki, the female lead, appeared in a full-page spread in Maxim magazine's Hot 100 list--and was indistinguishable from the real-life models. The setting and conflict make for incredible action, but it's the larger issues, character interaction, and human elements that really make the movie shine. The Spirits Within is not simply a science fiction movie, in the same way that Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon is not simply a kung fu flick. The result is a fantastic summer movie with better action and more emotion than Pearl Harbor, and actors more lifelike than those in that other video game movie, Tomb Raider. --Mike Fehlauer

This movie is amazing, you'll watch it again and again amazed by the graphics. the special feature that shows the progression from drawing board to final cut with animator comentary is really interesting. The storyline is a bit confusing the first time you watch it, but that's probably just because you'll be to busy drooling over the graphics to pay close attention to what they're saying.

3 out of 5 stars I would have preferred a live action version of one of the games..........2007-06-21

I will admit, I don't own this DVD. This review is based on having seen it in the theaters.

I was excited to hear about this movie being released, because I enjoyed the games, I had played up through FF8(I don't even remember if 9 was out yet) and I was excited to see my favorite games on the screen. I asked myself, "This is going to be cool! What storyline are they going to come up with this time?"

Unfortunately, I didn't get any indication from any of the reviews in the papers. They all preferred to focus on the novelty of taking computer animated characters and making them all look perfectly real like this was going to be the end of live acting in Hollywood once and for all. Movie reviewers now were debating the pros and cons of computer animated "actors," and I'm sitting there going, "Oh, to hell with that! What's the story about?" Because that's what I loved about the games.

Finally, I saw the movie. And for someone expecting to see a new Final Fantasy-esque storyline on the silver screen, my expectations were not met. First off, after being taken to such places as Baron and Figaro and Midgar and Balamb, why does the movie start off in New York City? Don't get me wrong, I love New York-it's just not Final Fantasy.

Next, the movie is literally all dialogue. Nowhere do you have the random battles, the strengthening of characters in battle, and the preparation for the final face-to-face showdown at the end of the movie. In fact, there was no final face-to-face showdown. The good guys are all on Earth while the bad guy is up in the space station, and he blows himself up.

They should have started out by creating a storyline using their familiar formula, and then if they wanted to use computer actors to make it, then great. Or if anything, they should have majorly polished the plot they had before handing it to the animators(and if they had done that, they should have used a title other than Final Fantasy).

A meteor has crashed onto Earth unleashing millions of alien creatures who roam the earth, decimating field and city alike, threatening to extinguish life itself. Prepare to be spellbound by an amazing woman, the brave individuals at her side and an astounding mission to save the Earth - all in cutting- edge CGI! The first feature-length motion picture to use computer- generated imagery to create not only effects, props, and environments but also the human cast members themselves, this lavish science-fiction adventure follows closely on the heels of another video game-based film, Tomb Raider (2001). Ming-Na provides the voice of Dr. Aki Ross, a female scientist in the year 2065, a time when Earth has been overrun by extraterrestrial phantoms borne of a crashed meteor. Humans have been pushed back to cities protected by barriers that keep the marauding space monsters away, but time is running out. Fatally infected by one of the ghostly beasts, Ross seeks information about their purpose and physiology, assisted by her mentor Dr. Sid (voice of Donald Sutherland) and the Deep Eyes military squad of courageous Captain Gray Edwards (voice of Alec Baldwin). Tension develops between Akis quest to stop the alien onslaught through study and the more extreme solution favored by the vengeful, saber-rattling General Hein (voice of James Woods), who would destroy both the aliens and the Earth itself. Aki ultimately comes to realize that the key

Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within (2001.)

INTRODUCTION:
In the summer of 2001, the film Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within was released in theatres. The film was widely hyped, but ultimately, it didn't end up getting the critical acclaim so many would have hoped for. One of the reasons the film was so widely hyped is due to the excellent computer graphics it was emphasizing all the way through. Attaching the Final Fantasy name also helped to draw in crowds. So, how does the final product fare? Read on for my review.

OVERVIEW:
Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within was released in theatres in America on July 11, 2001. The film features the voices of Ming-Na, Donald Sutherland, Alec Baldwin, James Woods, and many others. The film is in color and is computer animated. It is rated PG-13 for language and violence. Science Fiction.

STORYLINE:
Several years in the future, the Earth has been massacred. Alien phantoms have invaded the planet via a meteor that struck the planet years ago - and they attack humankind on a regular basis with no remorse, stealing their spirits. The human resistance to this threat does little to halt its advance. The human populations are forced to reside in shielded cities, where they are at least somewhat protected from the increasing menace. How to deal with this invasion is hotly debated - scientists of New York wish to gather spirits that can be used, by a questionable theory, to counteract the wave patterns of the demons. On the other hand, many doubt this theory, and wish to use a deadly space laser to attack the source of the problem. With doubts lingering and many undecided on how to deal with this threat, the monsters are drawing closer to completely destroying everything the human race has fought so hard to maintain.

REVIEW:
I've got mixed feelings about this movie. On the good side, the graphics are nothing short of excellent. The movie took a long time to make, and when you look at how good it looks graphically, it isn't hard at all to see why. The animators really succeeded on all fronts here. Likewise, the voice acting is superb. All of the actors, well-known and unknown alike, serve up a memorable performance. Of course, the movie has its flaws. The most obvious one is that the movie has nothing whatsoever to do with the Final Fantasy video game series. They were just using the name to draw in an audience, and this is part of what caused many moviegoers to be disappointed. Likewise, many of the characters are never given the proper development, and much of the humor is weak and repetitive. The film tends to drag on in many places, and the whole "spirits" plotline just seems dumb at times. Of course, when and where the film succeeds, it succeeds beautifully. It is not a great film by any stretch of the imagination, but everyone should see it at least once.

SPECIAL FEATURES:
DO NOT, UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES, PURCHASE THE UMD/PSP VERSION OF THE FILM! It has NO BONUS MATERIAL AT ALL! The DVD version can usually be found for an equal or lower price, and it has a whole second disc's worth of features that last for hours. Don't buy the PSP/UMD version unless, for some ungodly reason, you don't have a DVD player. What really pisses me off is that they had room on the UMD for previews of two films. That space on the disc could just as easily have been used for some kind of bonus material.

OVERALL:
Overall this is a good film. Not great by any means, and certainly NOT a Final Fantasy movie as it claims to be, but still good. If nothing else, it makes a worthwhile weekend rental. What we're left with is an average film. Fortunately, most of the high points make up for the weak areas. Just make sure that, if you're going to buy the movie, you get the DVD Special Edition and NOT the PSP/UMD version. Final verdict? I recommend watching the movie at least once - this is one of those movies that I feel is good enough to rent, but not quite worth buying.

EDITION NOTES:
This film is a fairly recent release on the home viewing formats, so it usually remains readily available. If you want it, you shouldn't have too much trouble finding yourself a copy.

2 out of 5 stars Exceptional animation displaying a nerdy script.......2005-10-28

This film was supposedly built on a game. And as with most films that are game oriented they fell short of the game and that of a good film. Why someone would choose this film for a PSP is beyond me. Probably because the original concept was for a game.

The animation is impressive, maybe not as impressive as advertised but impressive none the less. The characters look like they must have sucked their thumbs as children. Unfortunately the story is not so impressive. It looks like it was contrived just for the graphics.

What was the buzzing in the background? On it was someone's idea of background music that played over and over (sort of cartoonist it's self). I would be more elaborate but there is not too much to elaborate on. A better title for this move would have been "Gag me Gia" or "Ghost Toasties"

5 out of 5 stars Great Movie!.......2005-07-29

First off, if you are a TRUE Final Fantasy fan, you will realize that this in fact a FF related movie. When you watch Dr. Aki Ross speak to General Grey about a little girl that was dying, you will notice that she mentions about returning to the earth. In other words, like in the game Final Fantasy VII, when Aeris died, she returned to the planet. This is just an example.

I saw this movie when it hit movie theaters on July 11th, 2001. I got hooked onto this movie. It was a fantastic movie. For those of you who have debated about picking this up, from one FF fan to another, you will NOT be disapointed. This movie is well worth it.

4 out of 5 stars Final Fantasy - The Spirits Within.......2007-08-02

People were disapointed with this movie. I liked it. I think there
should be a sequel.

5 out of 5 stars WOW!!!.......2007-07-25

This movie is amazing, you'll watch it again and again amazed by the graphics. the special feature that shows the progression from drawing board to final cut with animator comentary is really interesting. The storyline is a bit confusing the first time you watch it, but that's probably just because you'll be to busy drooling over the graphics to pay close attention to what they're saying.

2 out of 5 stars Fun!.......2007-07-19

I watched this movie twice, once, I went to actually see the movie (on friends' initiative) at the cinema with some friends, about half way through we gave up on trying to watch it, so being that apparently we were the only ones who didnt get the new that this movie sucked, we ran around inside the unsupervised and otherwise unfilled movie theatre (yes, we were the ONLY ones)
the second time was knowing that no one wud come and we just skipped the "trying to follow" bit.

Square got so hopped up on using the technology that they neglected the plot. They should have started out by creating a storyline using their familiar formula, and then if they wanted to use computer actors to make it, then great. Or if anything, they should have majorly polished the plot they had before handing it to the animators(and if they had done that, they should have used a title other than Final Fantasy).
