Conspiracies abound in Children of Dune, Sci-Fi Channel's praiseworthy miniseries sequel to Frank Herbert's Dune, loyally adapted from the Herbert novels Dune Messiah and Children of Dune by John Harrison, who passed directorial duties (due to a scheduling conflict) to Greg Yaitanes, a 31-year-old TV director and Dune neophyte tackling his biggest assignment to date. Uninitiated viewers face a disadvantage; it's best to read Herbert's books and/or see the first miniseries before plunging into this remarkably coherent tangle of political intrigue, unfolding 12 years after the events of Dune.

To his horror, Maud'Dib--Arrakis emperor Paul Atreides (Alec Newman, reprising his Dune role)--has become the unintended figurehead of a violent dictatorship, and his enemies are multiplying. Vanishing into the desert, he waits as destiny shapes his twin heirs Leto II (James McAvoy) and Ghanima (Jessica Brooks), who must contend with their scheming aunt Alia (Daniela Amavia) while Princess Wensicia (Susan Sarandon), of the enemy House Corrino, plots her own attack on Maud'Dib's familial empire. Exiled Atreides matriarch Lady Jessica (Alice Krige, giving the film's finest performance) returns to Arrakis, where the enormous, desert-dwelling sandworms face an uncertain future. As always, the spice must flow, and the universe's most coveted commodity remains at the center of this richly detailed and physically impressive production. Special effects range from awesome (fly-over shots of the capital city, Arakeen) to awful (the saber-tooth tigers look like Jumanji rejects), and Dune devotees will endlessly debate the miniseries' strengths and weaknesses. Some may desire more action to punctuate the film's inherent verbosity, but consensus will surely conclude that this is Dune done right, with monumental effort and obvious devotion from everyone involved. --Jeff Shannon

4 out of 5 stars Wow.......2007-06-29

I haven't ready of the books, I won't lie to you about that.

I haven't seen much Sci-Fi beyond what's universally known (Star Wars, Star Trek, etc.)

But I will still tell you this much...

This is one of the best mini-series I have ever watched. You get everyting in this, drama, suspense, action and so much more.

If you're planning on buying this to get a war miniseries, an all out action miniseries, or even a "cool and trippy" sci-fi miniseries, this may not be for you.

It's so much deeper than that and unfortunately I don't think a lot of people will be able to appreciate it. That being said, if you're in the mood for a good story, I'd recommend this one.

I would however behoove you to check out the first miniseries,Frank Herbert's Dune (TV Miniseries) (Director's Cut Special Edition) , before watching this one, if only to get a full appreciation and understanding of what's going on.

5 out of 5 stars Affordable and Amazing to watch!.......2007-06-07

After watching the first mini-series of dune (and loving it!), I immediately watched the second as soon as I got it. I thought it was even better then the first.
First I'm glad they fixed some minors problems, a major issue with everyone was the Fremen's neon glowing eyes. They toned it down to a more subtle believable look.
Second was the great casting. I think almost everyone did a great job. My favorite actors were the ones playing Leto II, Ghanima, Irulan, and Alia. They gave such a powerful performance and really gave their character emotions that we can respond to and feel for. Like Alia's tortured possession scene, Irulan's love for Paul, and Leto and Ghanima's journey to put the rule of the universe to order.
Third was the soundtrack. And what an unbelievable score it was! I love every moment with Brian Tyler's piece. I don't think the movie would have been half as successful without it. I listen to it from my ipod, since I love it so much. It's powerful, diverse, and fits the mood of the story and the characters. My favorite tracks are Children of Dune, House Atredies, and Ima Natusf.
All together it creates a great movie, especially one made for television surprisingly. You usually don't get quality like this on 95% of made for tv movies. So I give a lot of credit to the makers for pulling it off so well within a small budget.
I never read the books and at first with the Dune mini-series and this one, some may not understand some point of the story, but really pay attention and you shouldn't have a problem understanding. It helps to watch it a second time around.

With this price, you can't go wrong!

5 out of 5 stars Review: Frank Herbert's Children of Dune (TV Miniseries).......2007-06-06

This sequel to the miniseries "Dune" follows the storyline of the original series of books quite well, and is an excellent addition to my video library. After viewing both miniseries, I am encouraged to re-read the texts covered by this set of videos.

5 out of 5 stars Love this mini series.......2007-06-05

Great continuation of the Dune mini series created by the sci-fi channel. They did a great job representing the book. I'm hoping the come out with God Emperor to continue the series.

4 out of 5 stars Entertaining, but not up to the books........2007-04-19

The hardest part of adapting the Dune books to a film format is that, in the interest of time, one has to decide whether to focus on the action or the politics of the story line. The Children of Dune (actually a combination of the second and third books) opts to try and strike a middle ground and actually succeeds in large part. They get extra credit from me for bringing back the actors from the Dune mini-series. The story is great, the film quality isn't bad. I thought that they played up the maddness of Paul's sister just a little too much for my taste, but Leto's character seemed spot on. Its well worth the purchase if you're a fan of the Dune books. Its amazing to see some of the places that previously existed only in my head on the screen.

Product Description

David Lynchs baroque rendering of Frank Herberts detailed, complex, and deliberately paced epic science-fiction novel is a muddled but visually stunning affair. It's 10991, and the desert planet Dune has been taken over by the Harkonnens, oppressive conquerors who desire the precious spice that lies beneath Dune's arid sands. The story concerns the attempts of a young warrior messiah, Paul Atreides (Kyle MacLachlan), to lead the native inhabitants in an uprising against the evil empire--and battle the giant man-eating worms that guard the coveted spice. Lynch shot much more footage than ended up in the finished film, but executive producer Dino De Laurentiis didn't want a three-hour-plus sci-fi epic on his hands, so he coerced Lynch into trimming it. The result is one of cinemas most infamous cases of personal vision colliding with studio politics. Nonetheless, Lynch still manages to cram in so many visual ideas and captures the tone of the book so well that these production issues can be easily set aside once the story starts rolling. Refusing to further edit the film for television, Lynch took his name off the director and screenwriter credits. As troubling as DUNE might have been for Lynch, the experience greatly inspired 1986s brilliant BLUE VELVET, for which audiences should be thankful. DUNE - THEATRICAL VERSION Amazing remastered version in widescreen format and 5.1 Dolby Digital audio. DUNE - EXTENDED VERSION With additional 40-minute footage. - - - - - - - BRAZILIAN RELEASE. - - AUDIO: English - - ARTWORK: Portuguese

4 out of 5 stars Finally -- the theatrical version!.......2006-08-15

If you are going to buy the David Lynch version of Dune (as opposed to the SciFi Channel's Frank Herbert's Dune (TV Miniseries) (Director's Cut Special Edition)) you could do much worse than this edition. The original, darkly wonderful 1980s theater version is here, without the cartoonish additions from the much hated "Alan Smythe" U.S. television version. The (deservedly hated) U.S. television version is also here for houseguests who didn't read the books and need more of an introduction. You get the best of both worlds in a package that is made even more interesting for being subtitled in a foriegn language (seriously: watch it with the Portugese subtitles on. In short order you will find yourself understanding what you see even if you never seen or read Portugese in your life.) Don't worry when it arrives and everything seems to be in Portugese, the films are in English, just turn off the subtitles, and its a cynch to figure out how to work the menu even if it is in a different language than your own -- its pretty well designed.

Now if David Lynch would put together a version with all of the reputed eight hours of footage intact . . .

2 out of 5 stars some technical faults in this set.......2006-01-22

Both discs state REGION 4, but they play on every DVD unit I've tried them in. The theatrical version (disc one) apparently is sped up about five percent -- I didn't notice it at first, but when it came in at just over two hours, I went back and discovered the alteration. Not too noticable, but you can tell the voices are modulated about a tone higher than normal, and the physical actions are a bit too fast. Still, it's watchable. Disc two is the TV cut, and the transfer is very disapointing. Pretty muddy and dim. Not nearly as clear as disc one, which really isn't a high quality transfer either. I had high hopes for this, since the US seems to miss out on every extended package on all things DUNE. The box and liner jackets are cool, but overall this was a let down. Wait for the expanded version due out soon...if they really DO issue it this time around!

5 out of 5 stars I like both versions.......2005-05-15

Dune (David Lynch or Allan Smithee ) versions, not the Sci-Fi Channel series,is a "love it" or "hate it" movie.
I read Dune before seeing the movie and was ready to watch Lynchs' version,I have seen movies based on books I've read and most don't follow the book too closely ( ex:Kubrick's "The Shining")so I was prepared for the worst.
I was very happy with the Lynch version and have watched it many times since,I also bought the soundtrack. After a few years I heard of "the long version" and had recorded it when it showed on Sci-Fi over two nights, then spent hours editing out the countless commercials.I was not satisfied,I was sure it had been censored and kept searching for The Full Version.
I was sooooooooooooo happy to find it listed on Amazon in February ,of course I ordered it and aside from the narration change by Virginia Madsen to I believe was Frank Herbert I am very satisfied. The longer version explores the history before 10191 and the reliance civilization had for "Spice"in religion and in space travel and the effects its production had on the people of Arrakis.
It is worthwhile to invest in both versions and be happy like me.

5 out of 5 stars Finally, We can get the extended version!.......2004-11-13

Contains both the Theatrical & Extended "Alan Smithee" versions.

Writing is in Portuguese (the DVDs are from Brazil) but the movies play in English just fine. This is a must buy for anyone who is a fan.
