5 out of 5 stars A Great Sci-Fi Horror Film to Watch with Friends!.......2007-09-17

I first saw this on cable TV years ago with friends. We howled with laughter at its campiness-- and that was coming in on the last hour. I eventually saw the full film and fell in love with both its strangeness and subversiveness. It is an absurd tale of excess gone awry that is completely relevant to the human condition.

I greatly enjoyed watching the extended-cut DVD with friends. The added footage gave it extra punch from the toned-down version that I had seen on cable. And, it is a film that allows for comments or gasps to be exchanged during it without losing the thread of events. It's a fun horror film. There is lots of latex and some funny commentaries on s/m. It may not be for the faint of heart, but I would not call it particularly grizzly either. Enjoy!

Also, the extras are great. The interviews with the director are charming. And the section where you can see the story board images alongside the filmed sequences is ultra-cool. The director seems quite proud of his ability to draw detailed story board images and for good reason. Definitely check out the extras, even if you do not normally do so. You won't be disappointed!

5 out of 5 stars Excellent DVD transfer!.......2007-09-15

Holy cow, this is one awesome release. I agree wholeheartedly with the other 5 star reviewers that this is an excellent movie, and thank the studio for it's release. The DVD transfer looks extremely clean and sharp. A+ on the video and sound. I don't see how it could get any better for DVD.

5 out of 5 stars Finally on DVD!! One of Stuart Gordon's Best!.......2007-09-15

Having just got my DVD copy of From Beyond on Thursday, I'm very happy to finally have this on DVD. Now I can get rid of my old worn out videotape copy.

Finally, the film has been released uncut, with Stuart Gordon commentary with Brian Yuzna, Jeffrey Combs and Barbara Crampton-Yay!!.

The a couple of featurettes with Gordon, a interview with composer Richard Band, and a storyboard to film comparison.

This is a must for any Gordon fan, and horror fans.

( Plus if your a fan of Stuart Gordon, on the Return of The Living Dead: Collectors Edition, there is a featurette called The Decade of Darkness, with is about some 80's horror movies. It has Stuart Gordon, Joe Dante, John Landis, Dee Wallace, Tom Holland, Catherine Hicks etc).

I definitely recommend this interesting and at times strange film, but very enjoyable.

5 out of 5 stars Finally.......2007-09-12

After years of waiting, Stuart Gordon's From Beyond is finally out on DVD, and be thankful that it is. Undoubtedly one of Gordon's (Re-Animator) best films and one of the best H.P. Lovecraft adaptations ever filmed, From Beyond revolves around survivor Crawford (the great Jeffrey Combs) of an experiment gone hideously awry. A psychiatrist (Barbara Crampton) however wants to continue the experiment, and returns to the house where everything went wrong, along with Crawford and a cop named Bubba (Dawn of the Dead's Ken Foree). Naturally, things don't go very well, but in Gordon's hands, the otherwise predictable story and events are frequently gross, and frequently entertaining. There's plenty of gorey, slimy moments to be had, as From Beyond is finally restored in all it's uncut glory after years of only being able to see it as a butchered, MPAA approved version that floated around on VHS. The DVD itself has some great special features as well, including an insightful commentary from Gordon, and a couple featurettes as well which detail the making of the film as well as it's re-editing for DVD. All in all, it's so great to finally have From Beyond in all it's uncut glory on DVD; and it's needless to say that if you're a real horror fan, this DVD belongs on your shelf.

4 out of 5 stars Creepy,imaginative take on Lovecraft's outline..........2007-09-11

Based on essentially a sketch of a story outline by H.P. Lovecraft, the tale is of a police psychiatrist Katheryn Mc Michaels(Barbara Crampton) who is put onto a case involving a man who seems to be getting strange visions in his head, after working on an "Resonator" experiment with Dr Pretorious... so he is locked up in a mental hospital run by a rivalous and sadistic female head doctor and her brutish orderlies. Mc Michaels is more understanding however, and wants to get to the bottom of what happened by taking the patient back to the lab, to re-create the experiment. What follows is a descent into the netherworld of Lovecraft-the theory that insane people, thanks to their malfunctioning brains and a strange gland, are really seeing visions of creatures from another dimension, trying to get in, a theme Lovecraft explored well in his other stories. What makes the film remembered so well are the in-camera and on-stage make-up FX work, all done on a low budget and before the overused CGI of today. Also Barbara Crampton(Mc Michaels)in an S&M outfit is worth the ticket alone. Later, as things get out of control, and the mutating patient is re-committed to the hospital, it is now Dr Mc Michaels who no one believes-dressed in her S&M garb- and she herself is involuntarily made a patient-happily so,by her rival doctor- restrained, gagged and scheduled for electro-shock treatment to "quiet her down". Thanks to a power outage by her mutating subject who throws an orderly into a fuse box, that doesn't happen. She brains an orderly(who deserves it) and escapes back to the lab, where the ongoing "experiment" reaches it's explosive and drippy conclusion....

5 out of 5 stars Great Movie, Great Quality.......2007-09-14

Having been a huge fan of this movie since I first saw it on DVD I was delighted to get a chance to see it in HiDef Blu-ray. I had read an earlier release of The Fifth Element on Blu-ray was lackluster at best, not having seen it myself I can't personally comment. However, this Remastered release on Blu-ray is incredible. The action is certainly not missing in this Bruce Willis flick, but just as much there's the comedy. Chris Tucker plays his character (Ruby Rhod) spot-on. Luc Besson does a phenomenal job putting so many "elements" together in this movie. This movie is not one-dimensional like most Action or Comedy movies. Well worth the time and money.

5 out of 5 stars Excelente!!!.......2007-09-13

Qualidade de imagem e áudio espetaculares! Realmente um Blu-ray autêntico e remasterizado, conduzindo à melhor alta definição disponível no mercado. Parabéns à Sony pela correção do re-lançamento desta versão!

1 out of 5 stars Total let-down.......2007-09-10

The video quality is horrible. The Super Bit release on standard DVD was superior. Sad, as it is one of my favorite movies for picture quality and testing out a new system.

5 out of 5 stars Splendid film, highly recommend.......2007-09-10

Uncompressed audio track is clear, dynamic and and natural. Picture is not the best I've seen in Blu-ray but good nonetheless. The movie is of course one of the best scifi movies ever made. Humor is cracking, main characters deep and the traditional story of all triumphant love is well put out.

4 out of 5 stars Flash Gordon Savior of the universe.......2007-09-14

I haven't seen Flash since I was a kid in junior high.I recently purchased the DVD and it brought back a lot of memories, the show itself is a classic the soundtrack is one of my all time favorites.I recommend this DVD to all the rockers of the 80's.

4 out of 5 stars FLASH GORDON is FUN !.......2007-09-12

Flash Gordon (Savior of the Universe Edition) is FUN to watch. We consider it a Sci-Fi Classic. There is 1 episode of the old black and white series of Flash Gordon on the DVD, which was cute to see, but would have been much better if they had the whole series to compare with the movie. Love the campy movie, very colorful version. Of course, music by Queen is fantastic ! Can watch it over and over. It's GREAT !

5 out of 5 stars So bad... It's good!.......2007-09-12

There are so many things to criticize in this movie. The acting is atrocious, the lines are bad, and the special effects are brutal, but it is still fun and entertaining to watch. It is a classic!

3 out of 5 stars Flash Gordon, Finally.......2007-09-09

I'm very glad to see this awesome camp favorite finally out on DVD. I would have been happier to see it in HD or Blu-Ray.

Many people have already expressed their disappointment with the extra features, so I won't go there.

Overall, this is the movie you wanted to own on DVD, on DVD. It is what it is. Nothing special, nothing horrible.

4 out of 5 stars a classic.......2007-09-06

I remember watching this movie when I was 8 years old on HBO and to me it is still one of the coolest films ever made. Flash Gordon had very colorful special effects that made it stand out.Though they were not of the Star Wars quality they did make the picture viual. Ulike the Ming in the new Flash Gordon this Ming is the true Ming. With the attitude, the costume, and the head gear and berd that is what Ming is all about it think. And finally the women are more exotic in this version such as Aura and Dale which were so hot that they lid up the picture.I reconmend this film for those who have never heard of Flash or are wanting to see it for the first time.

Sarah (a teenage Jennifer Connelly) rehearses the role of a fairy-tale queen, performing for her stuffed animals. She is about to discover that the time has come to leave her childhood behind. In real life she has to baby-sit her brother and contend with parents who don't understand her at all. Her petulance leads her to call the goblins to take the baby away, but when they actually do, she realizes her responsibility to rescue him. Sarah negotiates the Labyrinth to reach the City of the Goblins and the castle of their king. The king is the only other human in the film and is played by a glam-rocking David Bowie, who performs five of his songs. The rest of the cast are puppets, a wonderful array of Jim Henson's imaginative masterpieces. Henson gives credit to children's author and illustrator Maurice Sendak, and the creatures in the movie will remind Sendak fans of his drawings. The castle of the king is a living M.C. Escher set that adults will enjoy. The film combines the highest standards of art, costume, and set decoration. Like executive producer George Lucas's other fantasies, Labyrinth mixes adventure with lessons about growing up. --Lloyd Chesley

If you are one that likes classic rock and David Bowie but don't much like musicals....you still will like this. I have 4 boys ages from 15 to 3 and they all love to watch this movie.

5 out of 5 stars A Timeless Classic!.......2007-08-18

A guilty pleasure for me, Labyrinth is a made-for-kids movie with just enough weird stuff in it to appeal to teens (like a peeing goblin, a worm with a Cockney accent and an Escher-like chase scene). Not to mention that it was one of beautiful Jennifer Connelly's first starring roles. George Lucas produced and Muppet creator Jim Henson directed this adventure of a teenage girl who must venture into an enchanted labyrinth and castle to tangle with an evil sorcerer (David Bowie) and rescue her baby brother. Monty Python's Terry Jones co-wrote the script, and the great Elaine May reportedly took a pass at it as well. Bowie performs several songs. Columbia has released the film in a sparkling, very impressive new Superbit edition, which forgoes the extras to make more room for higher quality picture and sound.

DVD Details: After its 2007 theatrical re-release, Sony has re-released the DVD in an anniversary edition with lots of new extras.

Written by: Terry Jones, from a story by Jim Henson, Dennis Lee

a great family film with enough fun for kids and adults alike.
5 stars all the way.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful.......2007-08-11

This is a very under-rated fantasy movie and this is a tragedy because of how truly wonderful it is.

It's beautifully done and quite surreal. It's a terrific film for children and adults. David Bowie stole the show as the charismatic and musically incline goblin king. If you enjoy fantasy or just want something a little different or if you just like Glam Rock this is for you. With six songs by Rock legend David Bowie Labyrinth is one of the most wonderful fantasy films of it's or any time.

The film should appeal to the child inside. It's ideal if you're a David Bowie, Jim Henson, George Lucas or Brian Froud fan. Froud's artist hand in the movie has it's effect through the whole production. The movie has charm and meaning. The journey through the Labyrinth is a journey through one's own spirit, a journey into maturity and self-discovery and learning what is truly important.

5 out of 5 stars The neatest sci-fi of the 60s.......2007-09-16

I first saw this movie in a theatre as part of double sci-fi (the other movie was the time portal which has been renamed the time travelers) and it caught my attention and it has never left. One of the best sci-fi's ever.

1 out of 5 stars Deaf and hard of hearing people once again frozen out of classic cinema.......2007-09-12

What, no closed captions or English subtitles? For forty bucks, you'd think Paramount/Criterion could afford to make this accessible to the millions of us with hearing impairment.

I saw this film in the theater upon its original release, but it pretty much went by me because of my deafness. I had looked forward to seeing it again, but I'm disappointed to find that even 43 years later, I'm still not going to be able to understand the dialogue (or monologue).

I'd like to give it 4-5 stars based on others' reviews, but as long as Paramount doesn't give a damn about people like me, it's going to have to get a low rating.

3 out of 5 stars courage in hopeless circumstances.......2007-08-23

An astronaut searches for food and water after an orbital mission to Mars crashes on the surface of the planet. Obviously low budget 60s sci-fi rises above the B-grade norm with sympathetic main performance, good pace and signs of intellect in plot.

5 out of 5 stars Science in science fiction.......2007-08-12

Robinson Crusoe put the science in science fiction. There are no "noisey" ships or explosions in a vacuum. Our hero uses telecourses and video before compact portable video cameras were invented. He uses true American ingenuity to design a clock, find oxygen, and remain safe until he is taken back home. This film is truly different than science fantasies like E.T. or Star Wars. The score is magnificent and thrilling. And, best of all, it shows what all kids in the sixties knew--the conquest of space could easily be done with World War II surplus equipment.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful film for all ages.......2007-08-10

Count me in with the rest of the gang waiting rabidly for this release. I saw this film several times as a child and was totally engrossed in the idea of a trip to Mars and the adventure it could bring. That adventure is grandly represented by this wonderful film, which allowing for a few flaws in the plot, does at least attempt to present the story with some scientific merit and plausible ideas.

The cinematography is excellent! The stark, desolate landscape is both thrilling and chilling in it's magnificent but achingly isolated beauty. The lead actor, Paul Mantee, does a fine job of conveying the loneliness and edge of insanity mindset that comes from being in a situation of despair and solitude.

And best of all, you can watch this one with your kids, grandkids, spouse or preacher, for that matter. Good clean wholesome fun for all ages.

Highly recommended!

Steven Spielberg's 1982 hit about a stranded alien and his loving relationship with a fatherless boy (Henry Thomas) struck a chord with audiences everywhere, and it furthered Spielberg's reputation as a director of equally strong commercial sensibilities and classical leanings. Henry Thomas gives a strong, emotional performance as E.T.'s young friend, Robert MacNaughton and Drew Barrymore make a solid impression as his siblings, and Dee Wallace is lively as the kids' mother. The special effects almost look a bit quaint now with all the computer advancements that have occurred since, but they also have more heart behind them than a lot of what we see today. --Tom Keogh

5 out of 5 stars REVIEW FOR BOX SET ONLY! GREAT FILM DEFACED!.......2007-09-03

I bought the E.T. Box set at a reduced price recently because I refused to buy the altered version of the film! THIS HAS GOT TO STOP AND STOP NOW! Where do we draw the line? Are we gong to do CGI over the original "King Kong"? Are we going to color Hattie McDaniels's skin color white in "Gone With The Wind"? It is getting ridiculous what we are putting up with! People need to get over themselvies and stop being so sensitive. I just watched the Godfather trilogy and I'm Italian American! Am I complaining that Italians are protrayed as Gangsters? No! We could go back and forth all day talking about this, but in short....let things stay intact! No altering films or art etc., whether its a classic or not! It is what it is! OK?????? Ahhhh I feel slightly better now! The original film E.T is a wonderful film that seemed even better than I remembered. The DVD transfer looks great and the audio was really surprisingly good! The is an excellent film, but look for the gift set cheap. AVOID THE SINGLE DISC LIKE THE PLAGUE!

3 out of 5 stars If It Isn't Broken, Don't Fix It! .......2007-08-28

A film should stand as a testament or product of its era/time. So why change that and steal the appeal that made them special? Another questions for future generations to ask when they watch what once was a movie classic, but now raped into submission by political correctness.

It was what it was, but now - what is it??? I'm having a hard time deciphering that myself. The magic of E.T. has been tainted. When it should have been left alone.

5 out of 5 stars Awesome. But only for the second disc........2007-08-19

This is a fantastic film. I don't know when it became cool to diss Spielberg and his movies but I see why it was included as the 24th greaest American movie on AFI's 10th Anniversary list.

Such a powerful movie. It works on so many levels and Henry Thomas gives a wonderful performance.

But the first disc ruins the classic. CGI takes away that realistic feel to movies. No matter how wondeful the advancements are, there's something about CGI that ruins a classic when it's retouched in an unneeded way.

E.T. did not need retouching. It's a perfect film. One of the best I've seen.

5 out of 5 stars Great Enjoyment for the Whole Family.......2007-07-07

I know many adults who, when pressed, will admit to crying during ET. It's a movie that really knows how to play your heart-strings. The basic story is pretty straight-forward. A cute, friendly alien gets stranded on earth, and is befriended by a young boy and girl who try to help the alien get back home again. In an era where most aliens are evil, nasty creatures bent on world domination, the police and FBI agents are all out to grab and investigate this menace. So you end up with the nasty, dark government against the cute, innocent kids.

I saw this movie as a teen and enjoyed it greatly. I've seen the movie *with* kids and they loved it. It really is a movie that appeals to all ages, and it does that without talking down to anyone. It's earned its spot in the AFI top 100 movie listing with its plot, pacing, acting and directing.

If I have a complaint here, it's with the "redone" 2002 version. The movie was great as it was when first put out. There was no need to alter the ET main character. His whole appeal was that he was organic and someone you could relate to. Why turn him into a CGI thing?

Also, I have an issue with them turning the police and FBI's weapons into walkie-talkies. Sure, kids don't need to be exposed to Pulp Fiction degrees of blood and violence. However, to say that police officers can't carry weapons makes no sense to me. What's next - gunfighters in the old west who walk around with empty holsters? When real police do community policing and walk beats, should they hide their guns so that kids don't see them? I found this completely unnecessary and more than a little insulting to the intelligence of the youngsters watching with me.

Watch the original movie, which is what the AFI voted in - not the "PC version".

5 out of 5 stars E.T........2007-07-06

Spielberg creates movie magic with this warm-hearted yet gripping fantasy tale. ET himself is a creative marvel, the cutest, most non-threatening alien in sci-fi history. The child actors are uniformly good, particularly Thomas and the beguiling Barrymore. "ET" ingeniously turns science-fiction conventions on their head, as the earthling grown-ups are the bad guys, and the alien, the hero. Larger-than life emotion (and tension) elevate this film to timeless family classic, aided by another majestic John Williams score.

4 out of 5 stars A very good remake; collector's edition is sweet.......2007-08-27

As other reviewers have noted, this is an excellent remake of the 1956 original, with superb casting, great performances, excellent direction and cinematography. Veronica Cartwright and Jeff Goldblum (and Spock - Leonard Nimoy!) are very good in supporting roles. Cartwright in particular is just excellent (see her also in "Alien"). And Sutherland and Adams give believable, sympathetic performances in the leads. The scene towards the end when "Amazing Grace" starts playing on bagpipes along the waterfront... well, suffice to say it's tremendously effective and emotional. This film speaks volumes about the evils of social pressure and conformity, while managing to scare the be-jeezus out of most viewers. Definitely worth having in your collection of sci/fi DVDs! I'll leave you with one final line from the film: "It eez a caper!" "No, it's a rat turd!" :-)

5 out of 5 stars GREAT COLLECTOR'S EDITION OF THE INVASION OF THE BODY SNATCHERS!.......2007-08-22

i have recently saw the new movie THE INVASION starring nicole kidman and daniel craig a third remake of the invasion of the body snatchers.i wont spoil this third entry on my thoughts for now for those who havent seen it yet,so lets move on to the 1978 invasion of the body snatchers, directed by philip kaufman and starring donald sutherland, brooke adams, jeff goldblum, veronica cartwright, leonard nimoy.with special appearances of don seigel, kevin mccarthy and robert duvall.an intense remake of the 1956 classic of the same name based on jack finney's novel.while the 1956 version is far more superior the 1978 version runs close behind with added different twists to the story.the new 2007 collector's edition gives this 1978 small gem the red carpet treatment with better sound and crystal clean print better than its previous release in the late 1990's,with added bonuses on the making of the 1978 film.the question is..is it worth the upgrade?........ the answer is yes!everything you want to know about the 1978 version is right here in this worthwhile package 2 disc set.a great addition to any collections of sci fi.now back to the 2007 INVASION film, the third remake is a (im sorry im falling asleep(yawning)let me get some sleep and ill finish this review another time zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

5 out of 5 stars Great New Special Edition of Classis 70's Paranoia .......2007-08-16

I loved this Film from teh first time I viewed it about 5 years ago. Everything is perfect the cast the pace the atmosphere. The New Special Edition is very nice with some small little documentaries on the makings of the film. And just to point out that french title on the cover art on the amazon listing is NOT on the package for some odd reason they got a image of the french/multi lingual release not the US release. I can't tell if the new DVD is better looking than the older release but it is a dual layer disc where as the older release was a flipper WS on one side Pan/Scan on the other, so it should be a bit better in the picture dept enhanced for 16:9 displays. SIDE NOTE:This title is currently under distribution from FOX who for some odd reason doesn't distribute their MGM titles very well. Ever since they were releasing the MGM titles such as Fiddler on the Roof and even the more recent S.E. of Showgirls the titles were very hard to find at first even on any store shelves. In fact FOX couldn't even get online sellers to give the correct street date for the Release of Invasion of the Body Snatchers some are still saying it isn't to be release until Spet 11th. FOX is about to release a bunch of MGM Midnite Movies titles coming in the next month or so. Hopefully these titles will not be hard to find and that someone at FOX will get these titles in stores at a faster pace.

5 out of 5 stars Get INVADED all over again...........2007-08-13

People keep asking me, is this movie worth the double dip?? My reply is YES!!!! I have been waiting for months to receive my copy of this rerelease Collectors Edition and it was worth the wait.

The story needs no recap, everyone in the world should know the story by now. However the special effects are awesome (that man/dog hybrid still works today and the space flowers at the beginning look very organic and real) and the acting is top notch. My favorite performance in the movie is Veronica Cartwright as Nancy. The movie also is still very scary and intense once the action gets going.

The picture on the DVD is a lot cleaner and sharper than the old disc. The widescreen framing appears to be correct, the old version seemed more zoomed in and the credits were slightly cropped off on the sides of the screen.

The sound also has more boom and clarity to it. Those pods hatching sound as creepy today as they did in the theater in 1978.

The extras while not excellent, are pretty good. Wish they would find more stuff for the Blu-Ray version, if they ever release one.

As for the Blu-Ray DVD, Yes I would definitely triple dip for that one if the picture is outstanding and true Hi-Def.

5 out of 5 stars DON'T FALL ASLEEP WATCHING THIS MOVIE!!!.......2007-08-13

The 1978 remake of Invasion of the Body Snatchers is a perennial classic that absolutely terrified me as a child and still holds up after nearly 30 years and is one of the best and rare examples where a remake actually surpasses the original ala John Carpenter's The Thing. Director Philip Kaufman crafts a suspenseful science-fiction masterpiece about the dehumanization of humanity by investing in the personalities of very emotional human characters that break the mold of two-dimensional cookie-cutter stereotypes. Donald Sutherland and Brooke Adams have a genuine chemistry with great supporting roles by Jeff Goldblum and Veronica Cartwright. Adding to the eerie atmosphere we also get a very creepy and surreal performance by Leonard Nimoy as a pseudo-intellectual psychologist that will completely alter your perception of Mr. Spock forever.

I had the pleasure of watching this film again late at night after an exhausting day of work which is the perfect state of mind to be in. Struggling to keep myself from nodding off I could relate even better to the characters and their conflict by forcing myself to stay awake, not because the film is dull or boring, heavens no, but because as a child I believed, however irrational it may seem, that if I fell asleep watching this film that I too would be transformed and replaced by a pod. Funny how the innocent superstitions of childhood can resonate in our subconscious after so many years.

The new 2-disc collectors edition DVD is definitely worth replacing the old one if you own it, which seems almost like an analogy of the film itself which is finally presented in anamorphic widescreen with Dolby digital sound and director commentary by Philip Kaufman if you really want to test your insomnia. The second disc contains some nice featurettes like "Re-visitors From Outer Space, or How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Pod" featuring new interviews with Donald Sutherland, Veronica Cartwright, Phillip Kaufman and screenwriter W.D. Richter who reflect on the lasting appeal of the film and provide some interesting anecdotes about making the film. "Practical Magic: The Special Effects Pod" goes into the the organic photography of the alien spores and "The Man Behind the Scream: The Sound Effects of the Pod" features Lucasfilm's sound guru Ben Burtt who designed and mixed the sound effects after completing Star Wars to create the film's unforgettable and disturbing sound design. "The Invasion Will Be Televised: The Cinematography of the Pod" also goes into the production design and chiaroscuro lighting used to compose the forboding look and mood through light and shadow to invoke dramatic Hitchcockian suspense, and lastly the original theatrical trailer is included as well. There's more than enough material here to keep you awake for hours but should you find yourself feeling a bit tired just remember one thing; no matter what happens... DON'T FALL ASLEEP!

Hilarious, cheapie black comedy from 1960 that may be the best film by B-picture master Roger Corman, other than Bucket of Blood, made about the same time with the same writer, Charles Griffith. Seymour (Jonathan Haze) is an assistant in a skid-row flower shop who's on the point of losing his job when the unusual plant he's developed turns the store into a major attraction. The only problem is that the plant needs human blood to live, all the while crying, "Feed me! FEED ME!" Luckily, Seymour causes a series of inadvertent deaths that more than make up for the food shortage. Jack Nicholson provides a comic sidebar as a nutjob masochist visiting a dentist's office. Giggling and wild-eyed from the same impulse that might lead others to read scandal sheets, he can be seen in the dentist's waiting room reading aloud from Pain magazine. Famous for having the shortest shooting schedule on record (two days and a night), The Little Shop of Horrors spawned an off-Broadway musical that was in turn made into a successful film in 1986, starring Rick Moranis and Steve Martin. It was in just this quick-shoot atmosphere that Corman nurtured the careers of many of America's most celebrated film directors; this little shop of honors included Francis Ford Coppola, Peter Bogdanovich, Martin Scorsese, and Jonathan Demme. The DVD has optional Japanese subtitles, very generous bios of the stars and filmmakers, and a clean, crisp transfer. --Jim Gay

5 out of 5 stars If You Love Musicals..........2007-08-26

Then this movie is definitely for you. It's been one of my all time favorites since I was a child. I've seen it countless times over the last 15 years and each time is just as funny and entertaining as the first time.

4 out of 5 stars The fun of rock 'n roll horror.......2007-08-23

While lots of people have enjoyed the film-and-live experience of "The Rocky Horror Picture Show," my candidate for a good time would be "Little Shop of Horrors." This remake of a classic bad-horror film shows that the core idea was perfect for a rock 'n roll musical. Everyone is sublimely cast, right down to the doo-wop girl singers who form the Greek chorus.

Rick Moranis may start out a downtrodden, mistreated nebbish, but a passionate heart beats under that nerdy exterior. If his "Suddenly, Seymour" duet with the incredible Ellen Greene doesn't make your romantic heart go pitter-patter, head for the cemetery, honey, because you're officially dead.

Part of me regrets that the film had a sort-of happy ending, but there's enough of an "uh-oh" tag at the end to give it an edge. Anyway, who cares about such quibbles? Just sing along with Steve Martin's sadistic dentist, and have yourself a real fun evil time.

5 out of 5 stars very good.......2007-06-28

i love this movie it is fun and funny it has comedy and action and murder a evil plant what more could you ask for

4 out of 5 stars Like the movie...not the singing.......2007-05-18

This is a pretty good movie, except for all the singing....I know it's that type of movie, but I don't care for it. But I love the plot!

5 out of 5 stars The second best musical of all times.......2007-05-15

I first saw this when I was about 12. I hated it at first because I wasn't mature enough to watch it with out having nightmares. Luckely after occasionaly watching it over a period of about two years I final was able to to watch the whole movie from beginiing to end without stopping except for bathroom breaks. If you saw the original black and white version of this made in the sixties and the off brodway play which ran four about four years in New York. I also thought I would inform you that the whole alternate first ending is not include on this dvd. The al;ternate nding was only avilable for about the first three days the dvd was avilable for sale on line and in stores when it first came out. Unfortunately Mr. Griffen had not given approval to have the alternate ending included on the dvd so only fragments of it remain on the second release of it. When young rick morransis discovers a mystery planet trouble some comes up. Can rick tame this blood thirst monster will he is forced to murder to feed it;s growing hunger. I also thought I'd inform you that two of the members of this cast are currently decased. John Candy died from a heart prtoblem I belive it was shorly after his role as Barf in spaceballs the famous spoof of the starwars triology that came out after this. In addition shortly before the dvd release vincent Garden also passed away. Can seymor control this monster of nature and what fate lies in store for the human race. Find out in thrilling action packed hillarious finally. This movie should be fine for kids 13 and up due to mild gory images mild rude humor mild violence in a couple of parts, intensity and occasional inapropriate language at the begining, middle and the end of the movie.

This is the film that cemented Schwarzenegger's spot in the action-brawn firmament, and it was well deserved. He's chilling as the futuristic cyborg who kills without fear, without love, without mercy. James Cameron's story and direction are pared to the bone and all the more creepy. But don't overlook the contributions of Linda Hamilton, who more than holds her own as the Terminator's would-be victim, Sarah Connor--thus creating, along with Sigourney Weaver in Alien, a new generation of rugged, clear-thinking female action stars. It's surprising how well this film holds up, and how its minimalist, malevolent violence is actually way scarier than that of its far more expensive, more effects-laden sequel. --Anne Hurley

5 out of 5 stars Sci-fi classic.......2007-09-16

It doesn't get any better than this. Self-aware machines stage a coup on humankind. Who will win the battle. The machines are robust - because we built them that way...

Terminator should be in everybody's video collection.

5 out of 5 stars A sci-fi classic.......2007-08-19

Arnold finally found his role when he played an oversized, underemotional robot without too many lines to deliver.

Excellent script and an 80's atmosphere which doesn't feel too cheesy. There's a bit of wooden acting in places but the movie works so well that I can forgive it that.

5 out of 5 stars If you have the name Sarah Connor, RUN!.......2007-08-11

Tripping, dude in real life is pumping iron and winning Mr. Universe awards, beating out that Ferrigno guy that played the Hulk. Then he plays this cyborg dude that comes to Earth to kill off a lady whose son will lead a future revolution against the Robots. Yeah I know you are thinking dang, Bill Gates was probably in on this! No, he was not but Linda Hamilton rox yo world as Sara Connor, now you can spell that Sarah Conner or Sara Connor or whatever, I don't care. What I do care about is that this film really opens the eyes to a bad dude. This dude has red eyes and he gave a whole new attitude in 1984 when he had one ripped out, shrugged and simply donned some blades. Yeah black leather jackets as well. Oh man and then he just starts ripping up this police station!

Well c'mon, not very realistic. Sure you can have cyborgs come here and do stuff, they do all the time but usually they are just in Vegas playing the odds while on a stopover from Venus. Okay the worst part is this...a waitress from Los Angeles suddenly becomes the cops main concern? Yeah right that did not happen in the whole O.J. deal now did it? Real life this lady would not have made it and by the time the cops even had gotten hot on the trail, the Terminator would have been jumping around time warps so much his head would be spinning!

Classic Sci-Fi starring Arnie, who is now a Guv-nah but still pumps iron.

5 out of 5 stars "I'LL BE BACK" GREAT SCI-FI THRILLER SPECIAL EDITION REVIEW!.......2007-08-05

This review is for the special edition. The transfer is excellent and it has some great extra material. The movie itself is a faced pace action film with a pretty cool sci-fi story. If you are not familiar with this character by now......what are you waiting for? The entire trilogy is very good and it is a toss up between the first and second movie for best installment. The second installment had a lot more money to play with and is as good as sequels get. "Arnold" does a great job playing the unstoppable "Terminator"!

A knowingly affectionate tribute to Trek and any other science fiction TV series of the 1960s and beyond, this crowd-pleasing comedy offers in-jokes at warp speed, hitting the bull's-eye for anyone who knows that (1) the starship captain always removes his shirt to display his manly physique; (2) any crew member not in the regular cast is dead meat; and (3) the heroes always stop the doomsday clock with one second to spare. So it is with Commander Taggart (Tim Allen) and the stalwart crew of the NSEA Protector, whose intergalactic exploits on TV have now been reduced to a dreary cycle of fan conventions and promotional appearances. That's when the Thermians arrive, begging to be saved from Sarris, the reptilian villain who threatens to destroy their home planet.

Can actors rise to the challenge and play their roles for real? The Thermians are counting on it, having studied the "historical documents" of the Galaxy Quest TV show, and their hero worship (not to mention their taste for Monte Cristo sandwiches) is ultimately proven worthy, with the help of some Galaxy geeks on planet Earth. And while Galaxy Quest serves up great special effects and impressive Stan Winston creatures, director Dean Parisot (Home Fries) is never condescending, lending warm acceptance to this gentle send-up of sci-fi TV and the phenomenon of fandom. Best of all is the splendid cast, including Sigourney Weaver as buxom blonde Gwen DeMarco; Alan Rickman as frustrated thespian Alexander Dane; Tony Shalhoub as dimwit Fred Kwan; Daryl Mitchell as former child-star Tommy Webber; and Enrico Colantoni as Thermian leader Mathesar, whose sing-song voice is a comedic coup de grâce. --Jeff Shannon

5 out of 5 stars Never give up, never surrender!.......2007-08-24

This is the best satire comedy on the market, making fun of the old Star Trek show and all the conventions and Trekkies that followed the show.

The aging actors of the Galaxy Quest show still attend conventions, signing autographs for money, and no other acting career left because of the previous popularity of their show. Commander Peter Quincy Taggert is just Jason Nesmith (Tim Allen), a has been actor with a big ego. He's in dutch with his fellow cast members for taking side jobs without them. At a convention, Jason runs into the Thermians, who request his help to negotiate with Sarris, the general of an evil reptilian race. Jason believes they are simply fans, and has no idea that the Thermians are true aliens who have modeled their lives, and their ship, after watching transmissions of the show. The Thermians believe the show is historical documents, not old reruns of entertainment television.

After discovering the Thermians are real, Jason convinces his crew to come with him into space. The Thermians put the crew in charge, not knowing they are just actors. What follows is a hilarious romp through space with 'B' grade actors fleeing Sarris's revenge while trying to save the Thermians. All of the cheesiest aspects of the old Star Trek shows are brought back to comedic life. ("Look around you, can you construct some sort of rudimentary lathe?")

Stealing the show is Sigourney Weaver as Gwen DeMarco ("I have one job on this lousy ship, it's stupid, but I'm going to do it!"), Alan Rickman as Alexander Dane, Tony Shalhoub as Fred Kwan (a laid-back, stoner type), and relatively unknown Sam Rockwell as Guy Fleegman (the expendable crewman). Their comedic performances are absolutely top notch in this film, and there's a lot more humor hidden in it than just a first time watch can capture. It's a movie to watch over and over again.

Whether you love or hate the old Star Trek shows, as long as you love excellent satirical comedy, you will definitely enjoy this movie. 10 Stars! Well worth a purchase.

5 out of 5 stars absolutely hilarious.......2007-08-18

Even people who aren't Trekkies get the jokes in this movie. If you are, it is one of the funniest movies ever made.

5 out of 5 stars A very pleasant surprise!.......2007-07-14

I vaguely recall hearing about this film, and I don't even remember what it was I heard. All I know is I had no desire to see it because Mars Attacks! kept coming into my head, and I hated that film.

In 2006, on a Chrismtas flight back home, I happened to look up at the monitors from time to time and caught a few bits and pieces of the film while listening to my MP3 music. Without sound, the film seemed stupid, the villain seemed corny and the acting looked horrible. The only thing that kept my attention was wondering if the blonde was actually Sigourney or just a younger look-alike. Hey, the in-flight monitors are small! Bottom line is, I never realized the film was mainly a comedy.

Flash ahead four months when I was moving into a new place and a friend had given me the Galaxy Quest DVD as a house-warming present. I hooked up the home theater system first thing so I could get some activity going in the new place, and I took a break and watched a little of Galaxy Quest - and the rest is history. I instantly loved it and have watched it more times than I care to admit.

For all the reasons and more that many of the previous reviewers enjoyed this film, I do, as well.

It's a solid story with great acting and writing, terrific spoofs, excellent special effects, and is tremendously pure and funny. Move over, Spaceballs, there's a new kid on the block! Without a doubt, the single-best sci-fi comedy ever created! And the drama is good, too. It's a great combination of everything, which is why it's so entertaining and can be watched countless times. Can't believe as an avid sci-fi moviegoer that I somehow neglected to find this gem sooner.

Other sci-fi flicks I enjoy include: Alien, MIB, Evolution, Deep Rising, Zathura, Explorers, Bi-Centennial Man, iRobot, H.G. Wells' The Time Machine, King Kong (2005), Jurassic Park 3, Cube Zero.

Sci-fi flicks I don't like include: Star Wars series, Harry Potter series, LOTR series,

5 out of 5 stars Loved It........2007-05-24

This was just plain outright funny. Pokes fun at the Trekkies out there. Tim Allen is super as is Sigourny Weaver. Two thumbs up.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent Star Trek Spoof.......2007-05-16

Tim Allen mocking Captain Kirk, Sigourney Weaver repeating everything the ship's computer says, classic. Bored, bitter and alcoholic from touring the conventions, the washed up has beens are suddenly beamed onto a ship modeled on their TV series and expected to defeat a formidable foe. The problem is -- even though their hosts expect them to know how to do everything (after all, they did on the show) -- they initially can't even perform basic tasks. This is a silly movie, but if you liked Star Trek and can handle some silliness, this is among the best you can get.
