If Brian De Palma directed Mission to Mars for 10-year-olds who've never seen a science fiction film, he can be credited for crafting a marginally successful adventure. Isolated moments in this film serve the highest purpose of its genre, inspiring a sense of wonder and awe in the context of a fascinating future (specifically, the year 2020). But because most of us have seen a lot of science fiction films, it's impossible to ignore this one's derivative plot, cardboard characters, and drearily dumb dialogue. Despite an awesome and painstakingly authentic display of cool technology and dazzling special effects, Mission to Mars is light years away from 2001: A Space Odyssey on the scale of human intelligence.
After dispensing with a few space-jockey clichés, the movie focuses on a Mars-bound rescue mission commanded by Jim McConnell (Gary Sinise), whose team (Tim Robbins, Connie Nielsen, Jerry O'Connell) has been sent to retrieve the sole survivor (Don Cheadle) of a tragic Mars landing. During the sequence en route to Mars, De Palma's in his element with two suspenseful scenes (including a dramatic--albeit somewhat silly--space walk) that are technically impressive. But when this Mission gets to Mars, the movie grows increasingly unconvincing, finally arriving at an alien encounter that more closely resembles an astronomical CGI video game. But this is a $75 million Hollywood movie, and no amount of technical wizardry can lift the burden of a juvenile screenplay. Kudos to Sinise, his costars, and the special effects wizards for making the most of hoary material; shame on just about everyone else involved. --Jeff Shannon

Customer Reviews:
Great acting, good sci-fi premise.......2007-07-17
I like sci-fi based on reality. Granted, this was reality at a stretch but going to Mars is definitely doable.
Why on Earth, or, uh, Mars, did this movie get so many negative reviews?!?! This is one of the best Sci-Fi films ever!! .......2007-05-17
You would think that the movie being reviewed here was a lame 50's or 70's B movie entitle "Attack of the Killer Blonde Bimbos" or something to that effect. I recently got a chance to view this entire film the other night and all I've got to say is "Man! This is a valuable lesson of not listening to the negative reviews before getting a chance to see the movie!! And, sad to say, this is exactly what kept me from seeing this movie for so long. I made the mistake of listening to all the negative ink about it. I can guarantee you that you will find this film at least very likable. The story is good and so is the acting, even though there may be a couple of hokey parts in the film. Most of it, though, is highly enjoyable and VERY believable. This has to be one best, as well as underrated, sci-fi films ever made. Definitely worth at least one viewing and definitely better than "Red Planet"!
Half of a good movie.......2007-04-12
I must say that the first half of the movie is very good. Great suspense, action and acting. The effects are good and the movie purrs like a porsche car after a tuning. Then they put cheap gas into it at the point of landing on Mars and this porsche starts to knock and ping like a pinto.(sorry just always wanted to use that analogy for a movie and it fits here)
The script goes flat as soon as the rescue party lands on Mars and instead of anything good it just dries up and becomes more and more a waste of time. Still it's an OK time passer.
A Very Good Sci-Fi Movie.......2007-03-28
Tim Robbins (Woody Blake) and Gary Sinise (Jim McConnell) star in this exciting and entertaining film about the first manned spaceflight to the planet Mars.
The mission is under the command of Luke Graham (played by Don Cheadle), and after six months of spaceflight, the group of astronauts finally lands on the red planet. However, the Martian landscape proves to be most inhospitable, as some unseen force from beneath the surface of the planet unleashes its fury on the small band of astronauts. Luke is the only survivor. He somehow manages to send a cryptic and garbled last message to NASA describing the events which befell his group.
NASA immediately launches the Mars Recovery Mission, led by McConnell and Blake, to investigate the mysterious happenings and bring back survivors, if there are any. Also along for the ride are Phil Ohlmyer (played by Jerry O'Connell), and Terri Fisher, Woody's wife, (played by Connie Nielsen).
During the flight, the ship encounters a micro-meteor shower, and the hull is breached. Working quickly, Jim and Woody manage to seal the punctured hull (or so they thought), but when they begin their descent to the Martian surface, a tremendous explosion rocks the ship. The crew is forced to abandon ship and try to reach a smaller scout ship which was inside the larger one. Due to poor calculations, the astronauts must navigate in space with jet packs to reach the smaller ship. Unfortunately, Woody overshoots the ship, but the others reach it safely and descend to the surface.
Once on Mars, the crew finds Luke and learns that he has made an amazing discovery; there is a large white face on the surface of the planet, but he doesn't know how it got there. When the astronauts go to investigate, they find that many of the secrets of the solar system are hidden inside. Will the crew make it back to earth safely?
This is a very good movie. The acting, especially by Sinise and Robbins, is excellent. I've always been a big fan of Gary Sinise and his movies, including "Apollo 13" and "Forrest Gump", and he's just as good in this movie. Robbins gives a performance on par with his "Bull Durham" role. The special effects are eye-popping, and the dance scene, complete with Van Halen's "Dance the Night Away", is one of the movie's best.
I recommend this movie very highly. Science Fiction fans will be sure to enjoy the secrets that lie on the Martian surface.
Mission to Mars.......2007-03-20
I think this is a great "space" sci-fi movie. We are getting nearer to the posibilty of travel to Mars so watching this story, you get the feeling that there is "plausibility" to the story. Good action, good "team-work". After having seen this movie as a TV broadcast, I knew I had to own it.
If your looking for any goo dripping, human mauling space monsters in this, you'll be disapointed. If your looking for good entertainment, this is for you.

In this ninth installment in The Land Before Time series, a cast of spirited, young dinosaurs explores the familiar emotion of loneliness and the need to belong. Torrential rains have turned the Great Valley into an unfamiliar landscape, causing Littlefoot to feel lonely. "You are only as alone as you choose to be," his grandfather tells him. The flood has transported new swimming creatures into the valley, including a playful porpoise named Mo who quickly befriends Littlefoot. Yet Mo must return to his home in the Big Water and so, against parental wishes, Littlefoot and pals escort Mo on an adventurous journey back to the sea. Danger ensues, including "earthshakes" and "sharptooths," while the courageous group grapples with questions of loyalty and friendship. The strengths of the series have not been diluted; its stories continue to captivate using beautiful animation and lively music. Six original tunes make for finger-snapping fun for the younger set. Best I've Seen.......2006-05-22
A six year old's review.
Out of the six Land Before Time Movies that I own, this is the best. Mo was very funny and he liked to have fun. I bought this movie with the "Big Freeze" double feature and "Journey to Big Water" is definately better.
I also did not like "The Adventure That Started It All". "Journey to Big Water" was better than this movie also. "The Adventure That Started It All" did not have very bright colors.
I love the Land Before Time so much because I like dinosaurs.
Cheezy for adults, but great for kids.......2005-10-10
My two year old son loves this movie. He wants to watch it all day long. He really gets into it, and loves the songs, as well as the characters. The colors are better than in the original Land Before Time movie, but the story line lacks a little. I found the characters to be good. I still have a problem with "sarah," as she is a whiny little snot most of the time. Just like in the original. Anyway, your kids will love this. Yes, to us adults it is cheezy, and predictable, but it wasn't made for adults. Your kids will love it. Heck, I am a cop, and I have found myself whistling some of the songs while on duty.
cute and funny.......2005-09-30
i love the caricter moe he is cute and funny like this movie i love all the songs are like moe and the movie cute and funny
VERY PLEASED PURCHASE OF VHS TAPE.......2005-09-12

Zero!.......2005-07-09
Sorry but ever since the 7th one was made the company made pretty bad sequils, I once the 12th one aproves the whole series. I just think they need new writers on the set, I have some pretty good ideas........

It's easy to point and guffaw at the Flash Gordon serials. In fact, in this day and age it's hard to believe that audiences of any era were ever expected to accept bulbous rocket ships that flatulently trail sparks and smoke; preposterous, shambling space creatures; and spaceship interiors that look as though they were assembled from a plumbing warehouse. Despite the primitive sets and effects, Flash Gordon serials are as much a part of the roots of modern sci-fi as Jules Verne, H.G. Wells, or Ray Bradbury.
This collection from Image Entertainment finds Flash battling a fiendish plot staged by Queen Azura of Mars, stealing the Earth's nitrogen to aid in the ongoing war against the Clay People. Flash soon discovers that Azura is in line with his mortal enemy, Ming the Merciless, who secretly is plotting to overthrow her and take over Mars himself. As usual, the hapless Professor Zarkov gets in predicaments from which Flash must rescue him, and Dale Arden is by Flash's side through all of it. Loaded with fisticuffs, sputtering, wobbly rocket ships, lasers, and, of course, the remarkable Clay People (Martians turned into animated mud), this is fast-paced sci-fi entertainment that was state of the art for 1938. The energy and raw enthusiasm of these serials are what make them so fun to watch, not to mention providing a downright quaint time-capsule look at what Depression-era audiences thought of as the future. --Jerry Renshaw
Description
Complete and uncut: 15 episodes starring "Buster" Crabbe. Life on Earth is about to be destroyed! A mysterious beam of light emanating from Mars is sucking the nitrogen from the planet's atmosphere, and only Flash Gordon ("Buster" Crabbe) can stop it. Blasting off with Dale Arden (Jean Rogers) and Dr. Hans Zarkov (Frank Shannon), Flash and his intrepid band of adventurers quickly learn that Queen Azura (Beatrice Roberts), ruler of Mars, is stealing Earth's nitrogen to aid in her ongoing war with the Clay People, Martians whom Azura magically turned into living mud. A bigger surprise, however, is yet to come; working closely with the Queen is Flash's mortal enemy, Ming the Merciless (Charles Middleton), who--while posing as Azura's ally--is secretly plotting to overthrow the Queen and seize Mars for himself! Can Flash save the Earth, rescue the Clay People, bring Azura to her senses, and stop Ming's heinous scheme? The answers lie in "Flash Gordon's Trip to Mars"--15 thrilling episodes of sci-fi adventure at its very best.
Customer Reviews:
Space silliness.......2006-11-15
These fifteen episodes, twenty minutes each, add up to a five-hour marathon of popcorn-worthy swashbuckling. It's based on Alex Raymond's comic strip from that pre-WWII era that now looks like such an Eden of innocence. It wasn't, of course, but they didn't know it back then.
Queen Azura of Mars has waged war on the clay people, who seem condemned to live their shambling lives away from the sun, in prison uniforms and itchy-looking rubber masks. Evil Ming the Merciless falsely befriends her, to take advantage of her mystic command of the White Opal. It is a gem that grants her magical powers and looks pretty good on with her perpetual evening gown. Somewhere along the line the good guy's gal, Dale Arden, also doffs her lab coat and spends the rest of the flick running through forests and caves in an evening gown of her own - more sparkly, and more dramatic about the bodice. Then there's Prince Barin, standing proud in his armored chestplate and shortie bloomers. And Ming, with a little arrow pasted onto his skullcap.
Well, ignore the costumes (and the plot, if you can). Instead, drink in the tubby little strato-sleds as they soar through the air, flatulent with drooping sparks and drifting wreaths of smoke. Or the wonderful labs, generally bare except for a few ominous Erlenmeyers and a Jacob's ladder or two, or more. Or the ray guns that look mostly like little cookie presses with the handle bent sideways.
It's great stuff. My childhood was, I admit, as close to the series's 1938 date as to this writing, or closer. It was wonderful, stirring adventure back then. It still is, if you can see it with innocent-enough eyes. If not, it's the epitome of camp, only better for being so un-self-conscious. And people don't have bloody fights and do keep their clothes on, so tender sensibilities need not worry.

Good Movie--if You Get the Full Edition!.......2005-10-04
Make sure you get the Image Entertainment DVD! That one has all the episodes and runs 299 minutes. I bought the 97 minute edition by accident because the reviews are all combined!
Even the 97 minute version was good, but so much was edited out, and a few times the viewer is edited into a different situation completely.
The plot involves an attempt to destroy earth once again, and Flash Gordon, Professor Zarkhov, and Dale Arden come to the rescue. The queen of Mars has usurped the throne and turned her enemies into "clay men." But behind it all is Ming the Merciless. Lots of fun! But remember, with all these serials, the viewer had better not ask questions (like how is it everyone speaks English, or why can you fly from planet to planet and never worry about Oxygen or temperature). These movies are meant as an escape and are best called "feel good" movies. Kids love these as well as adults.
Uncomplete and cut.......2005-09-27
1mn45s are missing in 35mm sources while existing in 16mm TV versions.
On the Image DVD, Flash Gordon Trip To Mars Chapter 3 at 53mn53s : Flash says "It's one of the Death Squa-(sound cut, and) I don't see any more of them."
A sequence is definitely missing, the two parts said being definitely opposite in meaning.
The shot looks the same but we know how movies are shot, all dialogue in same set are shot at once even if applying to different times and actions.
From a forum, someone detailed : Flash Gordon and Zarkov are being pursued by a Martian pilot in a "Strato-Sled". (The Martian pilot pushes a button at the top of his console, and you hear an explosion) Flash says: "It's one of the Death Squadron ships right on our tails!" Zarkov says: "Man the gun Flash! I'll try to get him into position for you!" (The two ships weave around and fire at each other, Flash pushes his button, and there's a big explosion) Zarkov says: "Got 'Em Flash! Direct hit!" The injured Martian pilot crawls to the televisor and says: "Death Squadron Base Emergency!"(twice) The Squadron Commander, (Kenneth Duncan) says: "Death Squadron Base answering. Who's calling?" Martian pilot answers: " Z- N 12! Look out for...Look out for..." (he collapses, and his ship crashes into a mountain.) Flash says: " I don't see any more of them. He must be the only one."
Flash Gordon and the star war.......2005-09-08
I saw all the episodes of Flash Gordon during my adolescence and it had been for ever in my mind. Later on,as a man I had the opportunity to buy it and see it again, and I was impressed for the performance of Buster Crabbe that with the company of Dale Arden and Dr. Zarkov go in the quest to save planet Earth.
During the 13 hair-raising episodes of fabulous high adventure on Mongo, a planet complete with hawkmen, lionmen, melting rays, sky cities, rocket fleets, atom furnaces, all controlled by the cruelestdespot in the universe...Ming the merciless. comparing all this I realized that this 1951 TV series is the beginning of the new star war episodes, that is the importance of to see Flash Gordon.
ANOTHER CLASSIC SERIAL.......2004-08-18
THIS TIME AROUND, FLASH GORDON, DALE ARDEN, AND PROFESSOR ZARKOFF TRAVEL TO MARS TO PREVENT QUEEN AZURA FROM STEALING THE EARTH'S NITROGEN. ALSO, THEY HAVE TO DEAL WITH EMPORER MING AGAIN. THIS 13-CHAPTER SEQUEL DOESN'T COMPARE WITH THE 1ST, BUT IT'S EASILY ONE OF THE BEST SERIALS EVER RELEASED. ANY SERIAL FAN WILL LOVE THIS ACTON-PACKED SERIAL.

The nutty crew of the redoubtable space ship Nadesico pursue the war against the invading Jovian Lizards as this rollicking sci-fi comedy continues. Typically nonplused computer scientist Ruri sets the tone for these episodes when she notes, "What began as a love triangle is now, by my calculations, a septagon." Most of the female crew members are pursuing fry-cook-turned-pilot Akito; when they try to cook for him, they almost poison him and his cabin has to be fumigated. The only way for Akito to get a decent meal is to cook it himself. But Akito has little time to spend in the kitchen: he's too busy piloting his mecha suit, rescuing a secret agent with a surprising identity, and destroying the Walking Stick, a new Jovian superweapon. In the hilarious "Those Unforgettable Days," Omoikane, the Nadesico's computer, develops psychological problems that cause it to target allied ships as well as enemy vessels. Akito is sent into the computer in a cyber-adventure that hinges on his knowledge of the imaginary mecha series "Gekigangar III"--an outrageous spoof that captures the look of '70s TV animation, down to the Xeroxed lines. Who knew interplanetary warfare could be so much fun? Contains these episodes: 9. "The Miracle Operation of the Kiss," 10. "The Dangers of Femininity," 11. "Finding Yourself in a Routine Plot," 12. "Those Unforgettable Days." Unrated; suitable for ages 10 and up for minor sexual innuendoes and violence, largely restricted to robot versus robot. --Charles Solomon
Description
As the Nadesico heads for Mars and a deadly encounter with the Jovian menace, new recruits, a tragic death, an enemy ambush, a budding romance and a frantic battle all spice up the plot as the action really begins to heat up. Is it a recipe for disaster or mankind's last hope for salvation?

This is my favorite anime series. I watch it over and over again........2006-03-01
It has comedy, drama, and romance. The captian is beutiful. Can't even get it out of my head. I recommend this to anyone that is an anime fan. I'd give it 99 stars if it was possible.
I give it 5 stars.
Go Nadesico!
=)
Do Not Buy this from Amazon.......2005-08-20
This series is great unfortunately Amazon seem to ship the last disk in the series with a major flaw, the last two episodes never play on any DVD player. I have obtained three of "End Game" disks which have the exact same problem yet customer service at Amazon keeps saying its my player for all 3 different disks, even though I have tried them on as many as 10 different compatible DVD players. It's a shame as everything else I have ever gotten from Amazon is excellent including the rest of this Martion Successor DVD series. It's a shame that they are unwilling to check the disks they ship for quality as this batch is clearly defunct. I give the series 5 stars but Amazon in regards to this matter 0 stars.
A laugh a minute.......2003-05-19
Take one state-of-the-art battle spaceship. Throw together a crew of a pilot who wants to be a cook, a voice actor, a penny pinching accountant, a high strung anime fan, a genetically engineered 12-year old girl, and a few other loonies, and this is what you get. And make no doubt about it, this show is hilarious.
The action is fast, loud, and even sometimes confusing as no one ever seems to shut up on this show (Except for Ruri, who makes an occasional observation of 'Idiots!'. This is what Star Trek would be like if the replicator would make coffee using Jolt Cola instead of water.
This first tape contains three episodes, and all three are very funny. In later volumes, the action slows a bit, and both the characters and the story grow at a more comfortable pace, albeit amidst some hilarity. But this first tape will definitely whet your appetite for more. I currently have the first eight volumes and hope to be getting the last few pretty soon.
Gotta Watch This!.......2003-01-22
One of the funniest animes your going to find on the market. I don't think I've every laughed so hard before. The animation smooth and the dubbing is great. I can't really find anything really wrong with this series except a certain captain...
Wonderfully Daffy.......2003-01-11
This is one whacked-out ship of fools! The first tape in this 12-tape series wastes no time in moving ahead with it's seemingly trite plot and over-the top humor. The Nadesico is a spaceship that has been built to fight the Jovian lizards, a race of beings from Jupiter bent on destroying earth. The crew features a ditzy captain fresh out of officer training, a cowardly cook who doubles as a pilot, a penny-pinching accountant, a genetically altered 11-year old, two crazed mech pilots (One is an anime addict, the other wants to be a cook), and a host of others.
The series proceeds quickly and loudly through it's initial episodes, which focus on Nadesico's personnel quirks and it's fight to be kept out of military use. Some of the goofier scenes had me laughing out loud! Yeah, most of this has been done before, but this series strikes a great balance between action, comedy, and romance. I highly recommend this series. It will tickle your funny bone and keep you at the edge of your seat at the same time!

Armageddon - English/French DVD- From the blockbuster-making team who produced and directed PEARL HARBOR and THE ROCK (Jerry Bruckheimer and Michael Bay) comes the biggest movie of 1998 -- ARMAGEDDON! Starring the explosive talents of Bruce Willis (DIE HARD), Academy Award(R)-winners Ben Affleck (GOOD WILL HUNTING) and Billy Bob Thornton (SLING BLADE), Liv Tyler (THE LORD OF THE RINGS trilogy), Steve Buscemi (CON AIR), and Will Patton (GONE IN 60 SECONDS), ARMAGEDDON is a meteor storm of action-adventure moviemaking that has you on the edge of your seat forgetting to breathe! When NASA's executive director, Dan Truman (Thornton), realizes the Earth has 18 days before it's obliterated by a meteor the size of Texas, he has only one option -- land a ragtag team of roughneck oil drillers on the asteroid and drop a nuclear warhead into its core. Spectacular special effects, laugh-out-loud humor, great characters, riveting storytelling, and heartfelt emotion make ARMAGEDDON an exhilarating thrill ride you'll want to experience like there's no tomorrow. Interesting combination........2001-05-20
I have both these movies and Mission to Mars is obviously the better one. It's interesting to see these two placed in a two-pack. Mission to Mars is a reasonably intelligent and moderately-paced adventure tale while Armageddon is a flashy, dazzling, and fast-paced thriller. Admittedly, it's a dumb movie, but that doesn't make it any less enjoyable.

This is really a fun movie.......2006-05-22
This is a rescue mission to find out what happened to the first crew on mars. If they get there, what are they about to find?
I think of this movie as a combination of:
"Contact" (1997) only they kept on going.
"Close Encounters of The Third Kind" (1977) Martian style
"Rocketship X-M" (1950) with a message
It has good actors Gary Sinise (helped rebuild schools in Iraq), Tim Robbins among others. I did not see any strings holding the spaceship up. The only thing that I found negative is the VHS version has 20 plus minutes of commercials on the front end. You forget what you put in by the time it starts (if you do not wander off). I will watch it again.
BETTER THAN "RED PLANET"..........2006-04-27
I have to admit that I actually enjoyed this movie. I certainly liked it better than "Red Planet". I believe "Mission to Mars" to be the better of the two movies. It has a stellar cast and, I thought, good on screen chemistry between the actors. Most of the special effects were excellent. All in all, it is a good directorial effort by Brian De Palma.
Somehow, however, this has become the movie that viewers love to hate. Well, I am afraid that I disagree, as I found it to be a pretty decent sci-fi move. Of course, I am partial to this genre of film, so perhaps that may account in part for my liking this movie.
The premise of this movie is simple. A crew is sent on a mission to Mars. The mission is disrupted when three of the four crew members are killed by an unknown energy force emanating from a strange metallic composition in the soil. A new crew of four go on a rescue mission. These four, Tim Robbins, Connie Nielsen, Gary Sinise, and Jerry O'Connell, make up the rescue crew. Due to problems encountered in space, only three of the four make it to Mars.
When they get to Mars, they find the surviving crew member. Debriefing him of the events that led to the destruction of the mission, they discover that the metallic composition in the soil is, in fact, a giant metallic head made in the image of man. Therein lies the mystery. What they eventually discover astounds them and makes one of them decide to go where no man has gone before. The ending is somewhat reminiscent of a combination of the movies, "2001: A Space Odyssey" and "Close Encounters of the Third Kind." So, I ask you, how bad can this movie be? On the contrary, it is actually pretty good. Better yet, it can be watched by the entire family.
