After scoring popular hits with When Worlds Collide and The War of the Worlds, special-effects pioneer George Pal returned to the visionary fiction of H.G. Wells to produce and direct this science-fiction classic from 1960. Wells's imaginative tale of time travel was published in 1895 and the movie is set in approximately the same period with Rod Taylor as a scientist whose magnificent time machine allows him to leap backward and forward in the annals of history. His adventures take him far into the future, where a meek and ineffectual race known as the Eloi have been forced to hide from the brutally monstrous Morlocks. As Taylor tests his daring invention, Oscar-winning special effects show us what the scientist sees: a cavalcade of sights and sounds as he races through time at varying speeds, from lava flows of ancient earth to the rise and fall of a towering future metropolis.

The movie's charm lies in its Victorian setting and the awe and wonder that carries over from Wells's classic story. The pioneering spirit of the movie is still enthralling, but it gets a bit silly when Taylor turns into a stock hero, rescuing a beautiful blonde Eloi (Yvette Mimieux) and battling with the chubby green Morlocks whose light-bulb eyes blink out when they die. Although it's quaint when compared to the special-effects marvels of the digital age, the movie's still highly entertaining and filled with a timeless sense of wonder. --Jeff Shannon

4 out of 5 stars One of the best.......2007-08-26

This was one of the scariest movies I had seen up until it came out in the 1960s as a child terrified that the A-bomb was going to drop any time I heard a fire alarm. When the Time Traveler gets to 1964 and the air raid sirens are going off, that was it for me. The movie was turned off! I didn't see it in its entirety until several years later and I outgrew (mostly) that fear. I even got a copy of the book and read (most all of) it, for it, too, is a chilling tale of "what if." I happened to watch the 2002 remake last night and it was OK, and entertaining. It definitely has flashier special effects. (How is it that Guy Pearce can outrun those CGI speed-induced Morlocks?) Still, this one with Rod Taylor and Yvette Mimieux is the granddaddy. It won't disappoint.

A timeless classic! Just purchase now! Plus there is a wonderful 2nd sequence between Philby and George after George comes back from the future again!

5 out of 5 stars Absolutely Awesome!!!.......2007-04-08

George Pal's The Time Machine is one of THE great sci fi films. Forget the dumb remake, which totally botches the story. This is about as good as it gets fellow sci fi fans. In this film, a Victorian gentleman visits a hippy commune in the distant future and teaches them how to be men. (Of course that's not the real synopsis, but it fits!)I will not here start expounding on all that's great about this film. There's too much and the review would be too long. I will however say that this is one of my favorite films, has one of my favorite soundtracks, and has one of my all-time favorite main characters/protagonists. Too many sci fi films focus on a future that is better than the present, assuming a priori that things will only get better. I therefore greatly enjoy the novelty of this film's premise: the main character, who does not entirely like the Victorian era he lives in, launches himself on a trek into the future, only to learn that the Victorian era was about as good as it gets. The further he goes into the future, the worse things are, until about 800,000th year or so when he finds that those who are left who still resemble humans have been reduced to passive, unintelligent cattle. Note that the remake entirely botches this point. The Eloi ARE supposed to be human cattle. The remake took too many liberties with the story and unsurprisingly dropped the ball.

Very interesting and well done. Really enjoyed the story, acting and cinematography.

4 out of 5 stars Priceless.......2007-03-29

This time travelling tale is getting quite old, but is still fine
entertainment that will stir the imagination. Saw this movie around 40
years ago and even if some stuff is outdated, it still holds my attention.

While the 1960 version of The Time Machine remains a science fiction classic, this adaptation of the H.G. Wells novel benefits from a dazzling CGI facelift. Digital wizardry shows us the awesome splendor of eons passing in an eye blink, while Wells's heroic time traveler--played with appealing conviction by Memento's Guy Pearce--is given a stronger motivation for piloting his time machine 800,000 years into the future. Long after New York City has crumbled and the moon shattered by a nuclear accident, Pearce finds a new home with the peacefully primitive Eloi, after confronting the subterranean Morlocks (courtesy of Stan Winson's monster shop) and their evil overlord (Jeremy Irons in wicked, pigmentless makeup). Trading Wells's social commentary for pure adventure, director Simon Wells (the author's great-grandson) maintains the story's legacy of wonder, despite a few hokey embellishments. Catering to a younger audience, this Time Machine is fun without being particularly distinguished--a treat for the eyes, if not the brain. --Jeff Shannon

5 out of 5 stars NOt quite on par with the original but good........2007-09-02

I really enjoyed this film, a sense of fun is to be had and some food of thought. Guy Pearce is a great actor and does well in this. I never quite understood why alot of people didn't like this, it in no way butchers H.G. Wells story, like the original this one entertains.

1 out of 5 stars Has the usual modern film-making problems.......2007-08-26

This 2002 version of the H.G. Wells story is simply awful, and should never have been made. The movie simply deviates too much from Wells' original intentions for the story in terms of story direction and purpose. And the scene that really got me the most was when Guy Pearce meets a Weena-type in this film. In what is so typical of digital-age movies, this Weena-type immediately greets the time traveler with sarcastic remarks. She says to him, "They're deciding if they should throw you in the water or not." Then the time traveler says he came in a time machine, so the Weena-type then says something like, "Oh, then maybe they'll think you're just a walking nut." This is such a ridiculous attitude the writers gave her. She sees a complete stranger arriving in their somewhat primitive society, who claims he's from a different time period, and she just has a cavalier attitude, complete with a dry sense of humor. In this particular situation, this is not a realistic attitude for someone to have, regardless of how much some people today might think this is realistic. The Weena in the original 1960 film might've been too child-like, but her initial reaction to the time traveler was much more believeable. But personally, I think the most realistic-behaving Weena was the one played by Priscilla Barnes in the 1978 made-for-TV version.

The visual effects in this version are the best, and the images showing the continuous time progression looked much better than in the earlier movies.

Finally, Guy Pearce gave a decent performance, but as with a lot of actors these days, his performance just seemed phoned-in. It's a shame, because Rod Taylor really loved doing the 1960 original, and his heart and soul was really into the project. You just don't seem to see much of that with today's A-list performers.

5 out of 5 stars Great Sci Fi.......2007-04-25

if you like sci fi, and enjoy a large scale presentation (on a big home system), this movie is haunting, sad and powerful. i do not understand the poor reviews by some unless they do not like sentimental and unhappy endings...

1 out of 5 stars Ridiculous film doesn't even make sense.......2007-04-08

This insipid remake takes far too many liberties with the story, butchers its source material, and unsurprisingly ends up being quite a mess. Furthermore, the movie doesn't even really make sense when you think about it. The protagonist this time wants to travel to the past to save his love, and finds he can't alter what happened. This turns out to supposedly be because of a `time paradox' (though how the protagonist `caused' the Jeremy Irons character to exist is never explained). He then goes to the future where he CAN alter events. The remake entirely forgets the point that the Eloi are supposed to be cattle, and not a somewhat advanced civilization. That they're not kind of entirely destroys the whole point of the book, and the film greatly suffers as a result. The character played by Jeremy Irons was a dumb addition to the story, and so was introducing Eloi that speak English! Ironically, the special effects used to depict the Morlocks were better in the 60s film! Some bad choices were made here, to be certain. In the original the protagonist travels to the future because he does not like the Victorian era, and he learns that the assumption that things will only get better with time and `progress' isn't entirely true. Things only got worse. Here we're given a silly subplot about a lost loved one. In the original the protagonist basically happens upon a hippy commune and teaches them how to be men, how to fight the Morlocks. In the remake the protagonist blows up his time machine, which magically ages all the Morlocks and kills them, but doesn't age anything else around them, which is yet another thing in the film that makes no sense. The original, it bears mentioning, boasts one of the greatest soundtracks ever written. The music in the remake sounds like some annoying drivel lifted from The Lion King.

5 out of 5 stars Great Movie.......2007-03-15

I have read Well's book and seen the older movie. That said, I love this movie. Guy Pearce is very convincing in his role.

We see a man in love. When he looses that love, he uses his genius to try and save her. Failing to do that, he embarks on a quest to find out why. When he gets his answer, he realizes he has found a new life, and to leave the past in the past.

I thought the ending, with the past next to the future, was well done.

And Orlando Jones role is entertaining.

Despite symptoms of sequelitis, Austin Powers in Goldmember is must-see lunacy for devoted fans of the shagadelic franchise. Unfortunately, the law of diminishing returns is in full effect: for every big-name cameo and raunchy double-entendre, there's an equal share of redundant shtick, juvenile scatology, and pop-cultural spoofery. All is forgiven when the hilarity level is consistently high, and Mike Myers--returning here as randy Brit spy Austin, his nemesis Dr. Evil, the bloated Scottish henchman Fat Bastard, and new Dutch disco-villain Goldmember--thrives by favoring comedic chaos over coherent plotting. Once they've tossed Austin into the disco fever of 1975 (where he's sent to rescue his father, gamely played by Michael Caine), Myers and director Jay Roach seem vaguely adrift with old and new characters, including Verne Troyer's Mini-Me and pop star Beyoncé Knowles as Pam Grier-ish blaxpo-babe Foxxy Cleopatra. A bit tired, perhaps, but Powers hasn't lost his mojo. --Jeff Shannon

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Not as good as the first two........2007-08-26

I'm a fan of the Austin Powers series. The jokes are over the top, the characters are hilarious, what's not to like? So when Austin Powers in Goldmember came out, I just had to watch it. As you can tell from my 3 star rating, I was not that impressed.

At the time this movie came out, I was a fan of Beyonce's so that added to my excitement. Regardless of how much I liked Beyonce, I just couldn't disregard the fact that her presence in the film almost completely ruined it. The fakeness, the bad acting-it almost made me uncomfortable to watch the scenes that she was in.

Further, the jokes just weren't that great. The humor in the two previous movies had changed dramatically in Goldmember. The jokes in Goldmember are more obvious and silly. I even remember when I first watched this in the theatres, there were hardly any laughs coming from the audience. And the usually funny characters lack their typical "punch". The jokes are similar to the ones in the first two movies and they get old rather quickly. The new character, Goldmember, is nothing special. If I had to come up with an adjective to describe him it would be "gross".

The movie moves along steadily although it seems that the scenes were just thrown together. If you're a fan of the first two films in the Austin Powers series and you feel as though you must watch this one, it's important to know that it's entertaining in its own way but it's simply not good enough.

3 out of 5 stars good movie and funny b/c it's Austin Powers, but lacks.......2007-07-09

i think there will never be an unfunny or boring Austin Powers. the writers are good. but I'm the kind of person that usually only likes the first movie. the first austin powers was the best! liz hurley was beautiful in it, and the fembots. i didn't like the 2nd one b/c Heather Graham did not look attractive, and it seemed the dullest of all 3. i wanted to watch this b/c i'm a fan of Beyonce and think she is beautiful. unfortunately it is she that brings the movie down. austin powers is suppposed to be about 2 elements: Austin and his essential accompanying humor and the hot babe who supports him. i feel that Beyonce was not a good supporting actress. she is not a good actress in this and thus weakens the movie. she seems artificial and overacts. she is not natural; like she knows the camera is on her and this is a movie e.t.c. maybe she needed time to practice more and maybe it wasn't the right movie for her b/c in Dreamgirls she was awesome; her acting was really good and believable in that. i think she needed time b/c i do think they essentially chose her for this movie b/c of her star power and the fanbase she'd bring. but at least she does look hot in it! but i did like the ending of it. i think she wasn't so bad at the end. my verdict is that this is still watchable and shows off hot beyonce. Yeah baby!

4 out of 5 stars Pretty funny, but not as funny as Austin Powers 2: The Spy Who Shagged Me.......2006-07-03

Austin Powers in GOLDMEMBER

Not a bad movie at all. Pretty funny, but not as funny as Austin Powers 2: The Spy Who Shagged Me.

Should've given more dialog to Foxy Cleopatra (Beyonce Knowles from Destiny's Child); instead, she's just the next girlfriend for Austin, and not a more fleshed-out character, like Heather Graham or Elizabeth Hurley before her.

The character of Goldmember, while not in the film a lot, could've been cut down a bit more. He isn't particlularly interesting. He's not as evil as Dr. Evil, and not as disgusting as Fat [...], and comes off as a washed out amalgam of the two.

Fred Savage, from TV's "The Wonder Years," is good in his two scenes as "the Mole." It's Dr. Evil, as usual, who steals the show, however. And it's a pretty good show.

The 2004 version of Around the World in 80 Days is an entertaining hodge-podge of adventure, comedy, and scenery from across the globe. Phileas Fogg (Steve Coogan, 24 Hour Party People), an obsessively precise inventor, bets that he can circumnavigate the planet in 80 days--considered impossible in the Victorian era. In this version, Jackie Chan plays a Chinese peasant who retrieves a stolen idol from the Bank of England, then convinces Fogg to hire him as a French valet so that Chan can get back to his village. Chan supplies numerous spectacular fights against the forces trying to stop Fogg or get the idol, while Coogan is both funny and a surprisingly appealing romantic lead (he flirts with a fetching French painter who joins them). The various episodes--featuring cameos by Arnold Schwarzenegger, John Cleese, Owen Wilson, and Sammo Hung--are uneven, but a goofy good cheer prevails. --Bret Fetzer

4 out of 5 stars Around More Fun.......2007-07-10

I cant actually believe someone said stick to the original. Let me say up front my wife and I are in our 50s. Next let me point out I just re-rented the original so we could see it again. Although it has reasonable acting and beautiful scenery, we were so bored by the end of the first disc, we didnt bother to watch the second disc. I immediately returned both so we could rent this one. We had seen parts of this on TV. It has more action and is much shorter, so it wont bore you to tears like the other one. Sorry but I will take this Disney version over the original or the Pierce Brosnan version any day.

5 out of 5 stars Great Kids Movie.......2007-07-03

My grandkids are Jackie Chan fans, (of course so am I) and I was looking for a good movie they could watch without a lot of bad language and violence. This movie had everything I could ask for, great action, comedy and enough adult fare to keep me interested. The kids and I both loved it!

1 out of 5 stars This movie remake really stinks big time, but..........2007-06-25

This remake of Jules Verne's 'Around the World in 80 Days' (actually, this is the third go-round if you count the Pierce Brosnan-Peter Ustinov TV movie in-between which also had its' problems) is a terrible, boring movie. Despite all of the familiar faces that show up with Jackie Chan and the other leads (Arnold must've been paid a lot of money for a cameo to make a complete fool of himself before becoming California's Governor), this 'comedy' is an absolute B.O.M.B. But I disagree with many reviewers when they suggest watching the 1956 T.U.R.K.E.Y. starring David Niven, Cantanflas and Shirley MacLaine. That '56 Oscar Winner (also filled to capacity with celebrity cameos) is considered by many in the film industry as one of the worst choices for Best Picture. If you have it on DVD or VHS, try watching it. It is so bland, so humorless, so lacking in adventure, so B.O.R.I.N.G. I guarantee you won't be able to get through it. Hey, the music is nice, and Cantinflas is allowed to show off some of his talents, but Niven is stiff and dull, the plot (a bet, I know) is paper thin, and there are absolutely no interesting characters (even Robert Newton, who is hired to spy on Niven, is underused). The 1956 version, in other words, is overhyped and totally blah, with three exclamation points!!! If you really want to watch some exciting Jules Verne action, watch Disney's '20,000 Leagues Under the Sea' (1954) or 'Mysterious Island' (1960). I mean, some books just aren't meant to be translated into film. Maybe 'Around the World in 80 Days' is one of those books.

4 out of 5 stars Jackie Chan Strikes Again!!!.......2007-05-23

Of course, if you love Jackie Chan, just about any movies he's made is a MUST! This one has everything! He's funny, the action is speedy and all-over-the-place. There are also some tender character moments. Steve Coogan as Mr. Fogg is dashing and dares to be a little silly. Ewen Bremner is a cute addition to the mix as the free-spirited artist-lady, and handles herself well with screen-stealers Jackie and Steve.

Please check this one out the first chance you get!

4 out of 5 stars Disney + Chan = funny.......2007-05-07

I wasn't too sure what I'd find when I popped this one in my DVD player. It didn't take long for me to be laughing and, I'll admit, even gigglesnorting at the comedic moments. The laughs come pretty steadily with this movie. Mixed in with the situational comedy and prop gags that Jackie Chan is well known for, there's a entertaining storyline. Plenty of other well known comedians make appearances. All in all, worth the money spent and it's 95% child safe. ;)

5 out of 5 stars Infinite Worlds of H.G. Wells.......2007-02-09

This movie originally previewed on the HallMark channel ( @2001).
I eagerly sought after a copy of it then and was shocked to find out that they weren't releasing it. Well I gave up hope trying to get it for several years until recently seeing it available at Amazon. Wow, what a find. My wife and I love this film!
The adventures have a strong 19th century flavor to them and the budding relationship between H.G. Wells and his "lady" friend add a nice point of interest to each story. We've all read H.G. Wells fiction novels, but most of us have no clue of the life and times in which He wrote these stories. This movie offers a romantic view to that past.

2 out of 5 stars Nothing much.......2007-01-28

I have read a few of H G Wells stories. These ones I have no idea where they come from. None sounded like they came from Wells.

Science fiction is fiction but it's suppose to be scientifically believable in some way, none of these stories were good fiction or good science.

The acting was poor. Special effects poor.

5 out of 5 stars love in the time of science.......2006-06-26

As a struggling young writer, H.G.Wells is introduced to some great scientists who become fantastic friends, while strange things begin to happen to him as some of his own short stories are woven into the fabric of this series.

I can't say enough good things about this series. Because it's made like a period piece, when the science fiction stories start happening it's all the more amazing! Each story is such an unusual twist, i challenge you to guess what's really going on.

Tom Ward (Dr Harry in the tv series Silent Witness) holds the series together with his self-assured and sensistive portrayal of H.G.Wells, but the real treat of this series is the developing friendship and love he finds with the scientists and his future wife within the stories.

By the end of this, the whole cast feels like a very close family and you wouldn't want to lose a single one of them, which makes the final scenes all the more poignant as Wells grows old.

This dvd is impossible to get in Australia, has never been seen on tv here, that i know of, you can only rent it in selected stores. God knows why it's treated like such a b-grade series, it's really outstanding, i saw it over a year ago and it sticks in my mind to this day.

5 out of 5 stars Marvelous!.......2005-05-15

Like "Time After Time," this three-part British TV miniseries features a fictional H. G. Wells embroiled in several fascinating SF adventures. Each segment runs 90 minutes and contains two stories; the entire show runs 4 hrs. 30 mins.

This is one of the best films I've seen this year. Each story (loosely based on Wells's fiction) is well told and the lead characters are utterly charming. If you're in the mood for some quality science fiction this is the best bargain you'll find.

Great acting, dialogue, story, sets, costumes --- thoroughly enjoyable!

4 out of 5 stars Subspecies.......2007-09-08

I am very pleased with the movies and the fast response i got after ordering it. Amazon is a great place to do business with.

5 out of 5 stars The King of the Vampires.......2007-07-27

Vampire movies have been with us throughout the years. Some were good while others were quite bad. The lead vampire has been seen as the king of evil and as a sensous male the woman couldn't resist. Then along comes Radu. Until Subspecies I was mixed about just who was my favorite vampire. Radu is the ultimate evil and someone you love to hate. The movies are all done in the tone of Tales From the Crypt and incorporate all the darkness of the good old horror flicks. Large shadows casted on walls warn you of the approaching evil. Though the acting isn't always the best, my interest was never shaken. I've waited a long time for this collection and have watched it twice already.

4 out of 5 stars Gotta love Radu.......2007-04-12

I hold my hands up and honestly say i love the Subspecies films,i love the authentisity,i love the atmosphere,i love Radu's long wobbly fingers and messy eating habits, yeah i love these films, cheap,oh so cheap but good.
Its such a shame the film images haven't been cleaned up or remastered at all, they have the look of old video tapes but not even that ruins their spell over me.
Where the Radu Subspecies movies are dirty, squalid (and lovely) the Vampire Chronicles episode is aiming for the oppulance of Interview With A Vampire, it almost hits the mark as well,it has a sumptious quality and style that is the other end of the spectrum to the Radu films but they meet perfectly.
If you're a Goth (like me) if you like vampires (like me) then sink your teeth into this boxset, worth every penny (though the outer box is flimsy)

4 out of 5 stars Vampire. If this word grabs your eye then so should these movies!.......2007-04-10

ok i will make this quick and painless. I Loved these films and others *like puppetmaster* but these were favorites, but alas seemed impossible to find a good set since the 1 ed set was poorly packaged and had terrible glitches well im Pleased to announce this shiny New Set that i will summerize:

SubSpecies
Quality 5 star
Sound Very Good but not dolby surround
Extras: Yes *making of etc could have added menu for xtras*
Overall 4 star
theres good attension to detail in this movie in particular watch during the swordfight *you will see something you never see that would be natural in battle with a sword* **Spoiler Warning** yes indeed while his oponent is down he swings his Sword at His Legs! attension to details like this catch my keen eye! also swords bending and chipping also good detail! the "subspecies" demons were a great idea but sadly the effects were subpar at the time hence they look badly dated and poorly done.

Subspecies 2 Bloodstone
Quality: Below Average
Sound: very good *still no surround*
Extras: yes *cast & crew making of*
Overall: great movie but some graphical issues make this a 3 star
some flaws in the film and graininess also a little shaking of the picture in a few scenes better "Bloodstone Prop" Track 2 theres a half second pause glitch but its Very Minor.
its a great vampire flick slightly dinked by a few graphical problems that you really wouldnt notice unless you were Looking Specificly For Them. 3 star due to probs otherwise a definate 4 star if you can overlook this new editions flaws.

Subspecies 3 Bloodlust
Quality: Good
Sound Very Good as in the 1st movie
Extras yes.
Overall 4 stars
Note: Radu teaching Vampiric Powers in this one really was an excellent idea its my favorite part. little tired of radu's deaths though

Subspecies 4 Bloodstorm
Quality Very Good as in 11st and 3rd movies
Sound Very Good
Extras yes more of the same
Overall Great. 1-4 do well gong from one into another for both the story and the plot *though nowadays this would have been a 3 part flick max just each being longer* great story, "Bloodstone Prop ver 3.0 lol" mr crispy is funny too also see the parts about the bloodstone in this one about it drives vampires into madness yet allows them to never need to fed off a human while they possess the Bloodstone cool eh?
ugh radu got bumped off yet again 4th time sheesh he should be dead now.
Still a great vampire flick anyone who loves vampires etc and needs something different to see, well this is it! all kinds of vamps from zombie type and nosferatu *radu* type also even some anne rice types *see 1st movie* Uber for any Major Vampire Fanatic.

Vampire Journals
Quality Very Good
Sound very Good
Extras yep same kind.
Overall a bit dull would have been better as a first movie but they tossed in a few names and lines from the other flicks to connect them together. this one isnt as great. 3 star
Notes: More "anne Rice" vampire types, Uber creepy locations throughout romania etc adds to the sinister feel!

Warning! Not sutable for children under 17 this is Mature
Nudity, Violence and Gore. a Must Own For vampire fans of Nosferatu types or standard. Enjoy!
**************************************************************************
*** WARNING: not all viewers should buy this sight unseen not sutable for all viewers. also i add this note: if old movies like "sinbad and the eye of the tiger" doesnt bring back a fond memory or two or you havent seen it or did see it and hated it then this might not be for you rent first but me personally i love it all but Vampire Journals it seemed a bit of an afterthought and weak at best**

5 out of 5 stars Thank God!.......2007-03-09

I just received my copies of these fabulous movies, and I am quite pleased. I bought the 1998 redistribution of this box set, and it appears that the video transfer is better than the original DVD box set. I have only watched one of the DVDs so far, but I am very happy with what I saw. Sure, in the beginning of Subspecies 1, there is some minor oddities in the video, but the simple fact that these awesome movies are on DVD more than makes up for it.
I was beginning to think I would have to make copies of my VHS version in order to ensure that I would always have a copy of these movies. It would have been a shame if these movies would have been lost due to no transfer to modern media.

Description

Comic books--serious or escapist fantasy? This feature-length special shows how comic book superheroes reflect their times--from the 1930s to the 21st century--and how these wish-fulfillment figures became role models for generations of children. Following the most representative cartoon crusaders and villains, as well as the industry that formed them, we see how they mirrored society--from the Depression, WWII, the Cold War, and the turbulent '60s to today--and how they proved adaptable to other media.

4 out of 5 stars An insighful approach to Superheroes Comics.......2007-07-20

This documentary is a most for comics fans and for everyone who wants to know about the evolution of the concept of the superhero.

4 out of 5 stars An excellent documentary.......2006-04-09

I have to disagree with the last reviewer. I found this to be a superb overview. The authors have an obvious love for the comic genre, and the result is a very consciencious and thorough review.

It proceeds at a fair pace but never feels rushed. Tons of archival material are presented, as well as as some very interesting and unique input from Kevin Smith, Stan Lee, Will Eisner, Jim Steranko, Frank Miller ("I find my work kind of...jolly"), as well as execs from Marvel and DC.

The presentation is lavished with a variety of source-material, and it proceeds chronologically, giving a great deal of attention to the formative years of Superman, the role of comics during WWII, both on and off the page, and the mid-50s crisis engendered by Wertham and the Comics Code. It covers up to about 2002, stopping to examine the industry slump of the 1990s as well as the reactions to the September 11th attacks (though this part gets a bit self-important and heavy-handed).

There are a few omissions. The Watchmen gets a great deal of attention ("something like a bar-fight in the industry" opines a DC executive), but nothing else on Alan Moore's work is discussed. There's no mention of Grant Morrison's work, and it would have been interesting to see the industry's reactions to films that have appropriated comic book conventions, such as the Matrix.

Still, these are small concerns given the high quality of the DVD as a whole. A must for even casual fans of the genre.

A supercharged bloodfest for mixed martial arts fight fans, but of more dubious merit as a documentary, The Smashing Machine is a blurry, noncommittal portrait of would-be American warrior Mark Kerr, a soft-spoken drug addict who performs astonishing acts of violence for big money. A former wrestler turned extreme fighter, Kerr proves a contradictory subject--a boyish, quietly restless man who resorts to no-hold-barred savagery in the ring--in this shameless, often nauseating HBO project. Over several months, director John Hyams (NYPD Blue) captures Kerr's seemingly unstoppable parade of victory in the U.S. and Japan. He also reflects the decay in Kerr's private life and highlights a dramatic turn in his fortunes after Kerr loses an important MMA match to a Russian brawler. Along the way, we meet Kerr's trainer, Mark Coleman, whose own destiny takes on ironic, unexpected importance in the end. --Tom Keogh

Description

A sport so dangerous it was once banned in the U.S., no-holds-barred fighting is undeniably the purest form of human competition. Simple in concept and savage in execution, it is the definitive test of survival: one ring, two fighters, and no rules. In th

5 out of 5 stars Very Well Done.......2006-07-15

This documentary gives the sport of no holds barred fighting a human face. Mark Kerr is one of thousands of `ultimate fighters' that put their lives on the line for pride, money and family honor. Before I saw this film, I had seen a few of Kerr's fights and I was impressed with his ability and style. But I really had no idea about the man outside the ropes. This film presents Kerr as a brave and talented, but flawed man. And that is why it is so good, because nobody is really invincible or totally free of personal struggle. Everyone has to battle themselves as much as they battle the world. And Mark Kerr is no exception. He braved addiction and injury to come back and reclaim victory. In addition to Kerr, the film highlights Mark Coleman, who also beat the odds and won. This documentary is an excellent look at the sacrifice and commitment that goes into no holds barred fighting. Check it out.

5 out of 5 stars This movie is interesting even if you dont know the story..........2006-03-09

This documentary was shot at the exact time Mark Kerr was going through a horrible period in his life. It is done somewhat low-budget so don't expect James Earl Jones doing narration but it's an epic story. Unlike others, this film isn't done in the documentary style of flashback and archived clips. The things that happen all happen as they're filming the movie.
Mark Kerr was an amazing fighter and like most of the amazing fighters in the world kinda fell into the sport. He was a wrestler and after college needed something to do for money. Putting his talents to use solved that problem.
I suggest that anyone who watches this movie watch some real Mixed Martial Arts fights beforehand. Give yourself that taste of what MMA is like and then you'll understand how much of a struggle it can be to train and compete.
P.S. It's been a while since I've seen the movie but in the bonus features, watching Bas knock out Rodrigo (i think), is probably one of the most classic shots ever.

5 out of 5 stars The Smashing Machine - The Life and Times of Extreme Fighter Mark Kerr.......2006-02-17

This biography is well worth looking at if you're into ultimate fighting. This movie gives you an interesting perspective of the struggles and triumphs of a brutal sport. It starts with Marks first fight, the many years of triumphant wins and drug addiction. Mark Kerr is one hell of a fighter, on and of the mat. The disk also comes complete with special features. Highly recommended!

4 out of 5 stars Push comes to shove.......2005-12-27

The movie "The Smashing Machine" follows the story of MMA fighter Mark Kerr. It discusses his rise to the top of the MMA world, and his unyielding battle with his own personal demons.

Overall, the movie is interesting. However, I think it paints a really negative image of the MMA world. Mostly because they (the producers) portray the story of Kerr and Colemen, as two men who ended up in this world of MMA by mere happenstance. And that neither of them really wanted to do it, but instead that they were forced to do it because of the circumstances of their lives (Colemen and Kerr both needed money).

But the story is powerful, and Kerr gives one a glimpse into the mind of an extreme fighter. You find yourself cheering him on, hoping that he will be able to bash everyone's head in.

Enjoy!

3 out of 5 stars Could have been much better.......2005-12-09

This film held my interest throughout its one and a half hours. I am not sure that it would hold the interest of someone who wasn't a fan of mixed martial arts (MMA).

Some of the elements needed for a great documentary were in the film - close, gritty footage of Mark Kerr in some of his darkest moments, access to some of the most important people in his life, footage from his training and fights - but what was missing was a good narrator or expert commentator.

The shaky camera footage, quick cuts, blood-red filters used during some of the fight scenes, heavily edited fights, and the dubbed-in cheering will not satisfy MMA fans, and will only serve to disgust and upset people who have never seen a real Pride fighting tournament.

If you are an MMA fan, you will find this film worth watching. If you are not, you should watch a few tournaments before watching this film.

The Blackadder cast returns after a 10 year absence for this special. The new 21st century Lord Blackadder and his scabby, but loyal, servant Baldrick wreak havoc as they tumble through the past in a time machine, with disastrous consequences.

Customer Reviews:

1 out of 5 stars I couldn't even finish watching........2005-11-17

Having seen the entire TV series, I rented from netflicks out of curiousity. This was nothing more than a masturbatory reveling in BA, Atkinson and Co.'s past glories. The clever character sarcasm and artistic melding of slapstic and intelligent humour is simply absent here. I was disappointed with this, and glad that Laurie moved on to win Emmy's in Dr. House, and Atkinson went on to Bean and Johnny English (both were great). But this, this is just plain crud. Don't buy.

2 out of 5 stars It couldn't be worse........2005-01-11

It couldn't be worse. I mean that literally. That's not to say there isn't humor to be found here. In fact, my point is that this is, in fact, an occasionally amusing title. With this cast (Atkinson, Richardson, Laurie, Fry, McInnerny & Robinson) it can't help but have SOME laughs. But it could have been so much more. It's obvious that by the time they came to slap together this little 'help save the Millenium Dome' project, writers Richard Curtis and Ben Elton had simply lost touch with the Blackadder of old. The characters don't quite ring true (even ones they had played before) and the situations seem very un-Blackadderish (to invent a word). We never have time to really get to know these incarnations of the Blackadder crew. If this were a stand alone film, I don't see how anyone could have found these jokes even remotely funny without a knowledge of Blackadder beforehand? One of the great things about the old Blackadders is that, even if you'd never seen one before, every episode was funny in its own right. You didn't need to know that Baldrick's pants were a constant source of humor to find the jokes amusing. But here everything is referring to running gags of the old shows, without a solid base to the jokes themselves. Nothing stands on its own. I don't think you could ring six good episodes out of these characters if you tried. There's nothing to them, they are just shadows of their predecessors. Just like this show.

3 out of 5 stars Cute, But Is It Worth the Price....?.......2003-04-20

Being a longtime fan of Rowan Atkinson's Blackadder, I snapped up this DVD as soon as it was released. Considering the vast amounts of extras most DVD's have, I generally avoid buying ones that aren't loaded with hours of viewing material. However, seeing that the box said the program was 55 minutes long, and knowing it would NEVER show up on TV, I figured what the hell.....

The actual content itself is about 31 minutes long, with an 18 minute long "Baldrick's Diary" (Which is really a making-of featurette), some witty "Who's who in Blackadder" Bios narrated by Actor Tony Robinson, and 5 minutes of Historical tidbits touching on spots visited by Blackadder & Baldrick during the "Film", also narrated by Robinson. There's also some trailers for other BBC DVD's.

The Film itself is more like an episode of the series writ somewhat larger; A modern-day Blackadder and his manservent Baldrick use a home-made time machine to visit various spots in history. The usual suspects return, including Hugh Laurie, Stephen Fry, and Miranda Richardson. There were a few chuckles, but no real laughs until the end-credits song. Hardly worth the price, especially since the description on the box seems to imply that the actual movie is an hour long, not that EVERTHING on the disc equals an hour. Blackadder completists will certainly buy it, and enjoy it, but it should have had either more content or a lower price point....

4 out of 5 stars Not the Place to Begin With Black Adder.......2002-10-26

While a total stranger to the Black Adder corpus can appreciate it, a lot of this lovely little poison valentine's fun comes from being familiar with the setup and the characters so that one can ALMOST predict the next line or situation... and then being delighted when the writers and cast give it some twist you hadn't predicted.

I must agree with another reviewer that the return to the court of Elizabeth I really doesn't work; it does indeed seem forced as if the actors no longer inhabit the characters, but rather are pretending to be their younger selves inhabiting the characters. (Does that make sense?)

On the other hand, one of the funniest sequences in the production is in the Elizabethean time frame but without any of the series regulars save Blackadder himself, meeting up with Shakespeare, getting his autograph and then... Well, it's Very Funny. Even funnier if you thought Branagh's uncut "Hamlet" was a touch long.

The Waterloo sequence is lovely, with a neat little "Wizard of Oz" reference.

And, of course, the ending(s) -- particularly the end ending,a it were -- an absolute delight for the Black Adder fan, with, of course, an appropriate version of the theme song vocal for the end credits.

The "extras" on the disc, though a bit sparse, are appreciated, including a short "making of" documentary piece, with the writer director and actors all expressing themselves with wonderful clarity, and also including a couple of bits that were (mostly for the better, i think, funny as they are) edited out of the episode.

ALso under the "Special Features" menu are cast biographies, recited, in character, by "Baldrick". Unfortunately (and i don't know if it's a defect in the disc, itself, or in my APEX DVD player with the hacked firmware, or a combination), after the first few bios have played, the last few syllables or words of each bio were cut off as it skipped to the next.

2 out of 5 stars Strictly for Ardent fans.......2002-07-27

I am the biggest fan of the blackadder there is (including three email addresses entitled blackadder), but this video is for the fan who waxes nostalgic. If you have every thing else by all means purchase this if you (like myself) always crave more of Lord Blackadder. On the other hand, this is not the place to start, in fact it is rather disappointing, better to get the complete collection and the Christmas special first.
