Blu-Ray in America, HD-DVD in Europe!!!.......2007-07-01
Arnie is Doug Quaid, a simple construction worker who is bored with his uneventful life and wishes to be more and to do something meaningful. He's fascinated with going to Mars and meeting the mysterious woman of his dreams (that would be Melina) despite the civil war brewing withing the colonies. His wife Lori (Sharon Stone, looking gorgeous) is appalled with all things Martian and quickly nixes that idea. The only way Quaid is going to come close to the red planet is if he takes a Rekall vacation, a company that literally offers you a 'dream' vacation memory implant. Quaid wishes to go as a secret agent and all seems well until they send him to sleep.
As soon as he's unconscious Quaid seems to wake up in a rage, claiming his name is not Quaid but Hauser. And it's not just the dream going wrong since the Rekall technicians have not even implanted the dream yet. Blacking out again and waking up in a cab, Quaid has totally no recollection of anything that has happened and is confused to find his life turned upside down. His wife and colleagues are trying to kill him, dozens of armed henchmen are after him, he seems to have acquired lethal killing skills from nowhere and he apparently has some unfinished business back on Mars, despite the fact that he's never been there. Or has he?
Once on Mars for real (or is it?) he finds himself involved with the beautiful Melina (Rachel Ticotin, even prettier than Sharon Stone), the underground resistance and battling their arch-nemesis Vilos Cohaagen, a bureaucrat who has the entire planet under his control. It seems that Hauser was Cohaagen's right hand man and left clues for the fabricated Quaid persona to topple Cohaagen's regime.
Total Recall is certainly one of Arnie's and Verhoeven's most imaginative and creative movies. The Mars town of Venusville is basically Amsterdam's Red Light District with booze, drugs and sex everywhere, the violence is so ridiculously over-the-top that one cannot help but laugh at it (despite a lot of the gorier bits being censored by the evil MPAA), the vision of the future is incongruously bleak but colorful and fanciful yet primitive. The contrasts between Earth and Mars are similar to Western and Third World comparisons.
The visual effects, if slightly dated, are simply amazing. Jerry Goldsmith's awesome score is, at once, atmospheric and action-packed. The set-pieces, especially Quaids vision of the alien furnaces, are just ludicrously entertaining and the 'is it a dream or is it real' premise puts such a wonderfully surreal twist on the whole thing. Sci-Fi has never been so outrageous. What do you expect with mad genius Dutchman directing? And I do believe that it IS real.
The HD-DVD may be missing any extras but the film looks absolutely gorgeous in 1080p and is surely one of the best-looking HD-DVDs I have seen so far. Very, very impressed indeed. Highly recommended.
Blu-ray brings a classic back to life.......2007-06-12
For those who complain about the quality, I don't know what kind of equipment they were watching this on, but I've seen my fair share of blu-ray movies and this one was right up there.
Clear colors and nice sound - we had a blast reliving this movie from the past. I highly recommend it!
Disappointing Transfer .......2007-02-15
I Love Total Recall as a movie hence the reason I've bought it for a 3rd time, after VHS and DVD. I must say I was very disappointed with this transfer, why when films can be cleaned up prior to transfer do they make us buy such a crap transfer!? I mean I bought the Rambo1 Blu Ray from Lionsgate/ Studio Canal which is now 25 years and that is a superb transfer, even the French HD of Basic Instinct is a Cracking transfer by Studio Canal, In Comparison Total Recall is a let down, and to be honest when we fork out our hard earned cash for movies we love on HD formats we expect a marked improvement, why should we make excuses that this film is old, what 1990 is old! When film companys that do spend the money get results, have you seen the Bond Remasters on DVD, some of these are over 40 years old and look better then ever (cant wait for the blu rays of them!) Overall Buy this if you must have it, but be prepared for a let down visually!
HD-DVD Total Recall Review, AUSTRALIA RELEASE!!!.......2007-02-10
Totall Recall is distributed by Universal and Studio Canal in Australia, which means we get Total Recall released here on HD-DVD, not Blu-ray. This also means they'll be releasing Terminator 2 (Theatrical) here aswell.
Totall Recall on HD-DVD, fairs up pretty nicely.
Video: 3.5/5
Picture Quality is great, with sharpness and clarity on par with most HD-DVD releases. Grain is definatley present, but this is what's expected for such an old film. Comparing it to the previous Special Edition DVD, the HD-DVD is a HUGE STEP UP. Also, this HD-DVD's colour has noticeably been PUMPED UP in SATURATION, which is a very nice edition (Mars has never looked so pretty). I also read that it is a much better transfer than the Blu-ray release.
Sound: 3.5/5
We get a DTS-HD master here, and it sounds great. Although, it's hard to judge when I haven't got an AMP that fully supports lossless audio, but what i heard on the down conversion is great.
Special Features: 0/5
We get nothing here, NOTHING!! Studio Canal have to do much better than this.
Overall: 3.5/5
Whilst no Special features, Total Recall is still worth the purchase. it's such a classic Arnie action flick, every fan should own either the HD-DVD or Blu-ray version.

Easy to Like Even if You Don't Like Its Star.......2007-09-01
"Total Recall," (1990), a sci-fi action thriller set sometime in the future, stars Arnold Schwarzenegger. It's based on "We Can Remember It For You Wholesale," a short story by the noted sci fi author Philip K. Dick, was penned for the screen by Ronald Shusett, and was directed by Paul Verhoeven. It boasts a high-quality score by Jerry Goldsmith. And it's as easy to like as its affable, hugely muscular star, who, we know, has gone far in real life, too.
The film's set in Mexico City future, and on the famously red planet, Mars, where they've found something worth mining, leading to its colonization from Earth. Unfortunately, however, the planet has no atmosphere, thus no oxygen: all settlers and tourists must stay within an immense dome, and pay the local administration for air. Schwarzenegger plays Douglas Quaid, supposedly an ordinary earthly construction worker, though married to the beauteous young Lori (Sharon Stone). But Quaid is actually a recently brainwashed incarnation of Hauser, who was a big man on Mars as an administration spy. Quaid dreams of the red planet, and is so strongly drawn back there that he goes to a firm called Rekall, that implants pleasant memories, of whatever virtual vacation a client might select, in the subject's brain. But Quaid pays extra to virtually vacation as a spy, in cahoots with Melina, the sleazy-demure girl(Rachel Ticotin) he's chosen from the book. Problems arise, and Quaid must beat it back to Mars.
Verhoeven is a good action director -- he also gave us "Robocop--" and he's got a down and dirty Dutch touch. Sets are good: neither Mars, nor the city of the future, has too much of a cardboard look. And, in fact, just when things look most spacey, we're wittily, abruptly brought down to earth by something that still looks a lot like present-day Mexico City, to those who know it, or a can of Pepsi, a neon "lite" beer sign, or a sidewalk newspaper vending machine selling "Mars Today," in the familiar red logo of "USA Today." The citizens of Mars' Venusville, and its physical appearance, are spicy hot hot hot. The dialogue is witty -- Schwarzenegger gets off a couple of his famous one-liners, including "Consider this a divorce." The plot's good, and quick, satisfyingly complex, and has quite a few witty moments, too.
Schwarzenegger receives strong backing from an athletic young Stone as his wife, and Latina Ticotin as the sleazy-demure other woman: they're quite likely the best parts either woman ever had. The supporting players are solid. That European hand of director Verhoeven is frequently evident. There's a lot more blood, sweat, and spit than we're used to seeing in movies, and a closer look is taken, for example, at some dying goldfish, than we're accustomed to. (Quite possibly, closer than we would prefer.)
Verhoeven, unhappily, lets his special effects get the best of him in the film's last few minutes: they have a "Grand Guignol" quality not to everyone's taste. But it's an entertaining, interesting movie up until then.
The future of yesteryear.......2007-07-24
What else can be said about this movie except that it all seems so innocent now? And seeing CRTs with obviously curved glass in sci-fi flicks from the 80s and early 90s is always funny anyway. Not to mention the hairstyles and costumes. (This is one thing Kubrick got right -- his computer screens in 2001 - A Space Odyssey are flat...)
Nothing is as dated as the misguided futurism of yesterday. But that does not mean it is a bad movie, only one where some of the "futuristic" elements haven't aged all that well.
But the main thing about the film is of course the Big Question -- what of this, if any of it, is "real", what is imagined? Not that I want to sidestep that question, but has anybody ever considered the fact that this is a fricking _movie_? In other words, the whole thing is a fantasy, and those "dream-implanting machines" are just the fancy sci-fi analogue of a movie theater! The one who is getting false memories implanted is not Arnie's character, but the audience who is watching this (and tries to find out if it real or not), i.e. YOU.
Consider this movie a comment on the act of film-watching itself. That you ask questions about the reality of it all really only shows you are ignoring the obvious thing, the cinema/plasma/TFT screen in front of you.
Maybe that is a daring hypothesis, but then again Starship Troopers and Verhoeven's other films are certainly not to be taken at face value either, so I guess suspecting that the director is trying to make an ironic statement here about his profession is not so far-fetched after all.
And within the reality of the movie, it is made quite clear that, once the technology to fake memories perfectly has been invented, you can _never_ again be sure of what is real and what isn't. And therefore, it does not make sense for Arnie's character to ask himself that. "Your mind will not know the difference", so what would be the point?
And ultimately, we cannot verify our "real" memories either. You may live now and have memories of what you did a week ago, but there is no way for you to go back to make sure you really did what you thought you did a week ago. So from that standpoint we are not in a better position than Arnie's character, except that we generally do not question the validity of our memory very much, even though means exist (hypnosis) to alter it just as effectively as with the (hopefully) fictional machine in this movie.
Total Recall.......2007-05-13
Very good action movie with great performances by Arnold Schwarzenegger and SHARON STONE.The special effects are dazzling; it even won a special achievement Oscar.I recommend this movie
one fo the best arnolds.......2007-02-28
this movie is awesome its super violent and the makeup looks amazing still screw computer effects
I "recall" it being a better movie.......2006-12-14
Enjoyable experience back in the 80s; not so much now. The acting is stiff, the makeup is bad and the 80 hairstyles are laughable. Still the script was amazing...any chance of a remake without Arnold?

Amazon.com essential video
This science fiction blockbuster from 1990 began its production life as a very different movie than the one that was released. An adaptation of the Philip K. Dick short story "We Can Remember It for You Wholesale," Total Recall was originally conceived of with Richard Dreyfuss starring as a Walter Mitty-like character who experiences a variety of artificially induced fantasies. The movie we know is a mega-budget action epic set on Mars. Arnold Schwarzenegger plays a normal working man who discovers that his entire reality has been invented to conceal a plot of planetary domination. Oscar-winning special effects and violent action propel the twisting plot, in which Arnold manipulates his manipulators in a world of dazzling high technology. Director Paul Verhoeven (Robocop) indulges his usual penchant for gratuitous bloodshed, but the movie has enough cleverness to rise above its excesses. --Jeff Shannon
Customer Reviews:
As I recall.......2007-03-08
Excellent film. The action in Schwarzenegger films is renowned. Often the writing, in the action films at least, is as well. This film ranks at the top! Truly a discussion film. Was it all a dream, did it really happen, What about the girl, the blue sky? There's plenty of evidence to support both sides of the discussion. Try it, you'll like it!! No discussion there.
A Great Science Fiction Mind Blowing Ride.......2007-03-04
I love this film and eventhough it's 17 years old I still think it's great fun. I mean what's more original than either taking a vacation to another planet for real or taking a trip there that's only real in your mind. Arnold Schwarzenegger stars as a man who's obsessed with going to Mars after a bunch of weird dreams he has of him there. His wife played by Sharon Stone "at her hottest, well next to Basic Instinct" is jealous since he's having dreams of another woman with him. He goes to a place called Recall that can send you to certain places in your mind with an implant that Arnold decides to go to anyway.
After he gets the implant he finds that he's not on Mars but that everyone is chasing him with guns...including his hot wife who claims she was never his wife and just playing the part. He learns that he was never who he thought he was and was really a bad guy who got his memory erased and filled in with false memories. But could it be that the implant never went wrong at Recall and that he's really just living out the fantasy of the implant. Since he did describe that he'd like the hot brunette from his dreams there and that he did ask to be a spy and well since he did wind up on Mars too.
We never really learn which makes this movie even more fun since I waited for years for a sequel with it all either turning out to be real or not real. But really this is a perfect film without ever finding out. It's like you're experiencing all the confusion that his character has and the film feels like one great Science Fiction nightmare come to life. It has realistic and fun effects and is just great to look at even 17 years later. There's just not many films that compare to the excitement and fun that Total Recall gives you. Some might consider it a classic if it wasn't a little too over the top violent though. But even with all the violence this is one hell of a fascinating movie.
Well paced Sci-Fi.......2007-01-15
This is one of Arnold's best. Take a great lineup of actors. Throw in a good story by Philip K. Dick (screen play by Ronald Shussett, Dan O'Bannon, and Gary Goldman). Add a well designed set that make you feel you are there. And you have the makings for a pretty good movie. With a few exceptions it is hard to tell the good guys format the bad and with several plot twists it is hard to know if you should root for the good guy or the bad. A hint stick with Arnold and you can not go wrong (Maybe).
Douglas Quaid (Arnold Schwarzenegger) a mild mannered construction worker, who is happily married to Lori (Sharon Stone), and seems extraordinarily attracted to life on Mars. Now Mars is settled and basically ran by a mining consortium. And the least Douglas can do is take a vacation there. Discouraged by his wife he decided to take a virtual trip there.
Oh no, something has gone wrong. It turns out that unknown to him he is not Douglas Quaid. He finds out that his whole history is a lie. Now people are out to kill him and he must find out who he is and why. If he escapes, the journey will take him to Mars to fulfill his or someone's destiny. Good or bad we are along for the ride.
Mind-blowing scifi action!.......2006-11-19
This is one of Schwarzenegger's best. He looks so energetic in this movie.
And Sharon Stone partners him very attractively. The movie will take you to Mars... It will have you thinking about what's real around you and what is just a dellusion... May be you too were a secret agent, but they erased your memory? This movie will help you to remember your dreams about beautiful space adventures.
The story is by the same writer Philip K. Dick, who created the story for "Bladerunner" as well. The original story for "Total Recall is titled "We can remember it for you wholesale".
The film setting is totally futuristic, with fantastic architecture and concept vehicles. Shootings, chasings, suspence, metro stations, hotels, videophones, Mars, the love town "Venusville" - you get all the features of a great movie. Don't hesitate, watch this movie now, if you haven't seen it already. You'll be glad you did!
Great movie, lots of twists........2006-09-16
Total recall is a great thriller! It has many twists and turns, and the acting is superb. Predator will always be Arnold's best movie, but Total Recall is in the top six. Please note that there are some very, very, disturbing images that will keep you awake for weeks!

Customer Reviews:
Blade Runner meets TV cop show...badly.......2007-08-22
Another failed SF series. And watching it, I can understand why this one failed (even though I still cannot understand why something like JAG can survive for ten years...). First of all, the debt to Blade Runner is considerable. Cops tracking `androids,' exterior scenes garishly lit in constant rain by neon fluted with Japanese characters. And a scene midway into the story of an android wanting to extend his memory and the `cop' not killing him. In this version, he jumps off of the building instead of delivering the pithy 'tears in rain' speech. And the dialog does not approach the genre-pathos of BR.
The structure of the story revolves around a good `cop' who is chronically underappreciated by his captain. The dialog is peppered with cliches from just about every TV cop show ever written. What is tiresome is the trope of the good cop constantly doing good cop work, yet his captain somehow amazingly seems not to be able to stop yelling and berating him for it. In this series, the logic of such a relationship is broken. We can see no reason why our hero Hume keeps getting trash-mouthed by his boss, as he is consistently uncovering clue after clue in the ongoing investigation and breaking it wide open. But of course, that doesn't create much drama, so we have to have his boss be an unmitigated jerk. And the female lead/support is also tiring. Enough of bromide female characters afraid for their spouses and constantly berating them for not coming home on time or forgetting the milk. Let's face it, as a viewer, If I see this guy evade certain death and heroically perform feat after feat, i'm not going to have much sympathy for his dumbass wife. But the berating chastising/wise wife is a hallowed cliche in TV and is trotted out again and again. And boringly, everyone is beautiful - or at least, the good guys are. Skip it.
Excellent atmosphere, top cyberpunk.......2007-06-15
I just found this series on the new internet TV phenomenon ''Joost''. What a grand shame this series got canned after 20 episodes, of which Joost has 11. This is basically Blade Runner, the series, which would have been great for T.V. The directing is very atmospheric, the acting is surprisingly believable.
Originality a plus........2007-04-28
It is so rare these days that you can find a sci-fi series or movie that is original and not a remake or ripoff of someone else's idea. Total Recall 2070 was a complete original. My only complaint is where is the rest of the series?
Total Recall 2.......2006-09-04
What can you say about the Arnie movie Total Recall in 1990?
What a great movie, however you view that movie it gave you a distinct feeling for the movie that someone else that viewed the dream differently got out of the movie. For Ages my friend and I would banter which is the real ending to the Arnie Movie.
Sadly this movie kills the mystique of the first one and proves me wrong. Clearly taking place in the future of the first one It shows Mars and Mars (No terraformed Arnie ending)
This Movie is still great all on its own. If you never saw the first one, you would still greatly appreciate this one even if you didnt understand the whole Rekall subplot.
I like to think of this movie as a combination of Total Recall, CSI, Blade Runner and Issac Asimovs Caves of Steel.
If you are a fan of the Arnie movie or just a Sci-Fi geek like me then this is a sure bet. Maybe with more and more people buying this movie which is actually a pilot to a whole series then the company will finally release the series on DVD
MEMORY LAPSE.......2004-05-25
I didn't know this was the first two episodes of a television series, but after watching it, I certainly can see that it was. The production values are okay, but I understand some of the footage of Mars was taken directly from the Schwarzenegger hit movie which spawned this series.
Michael Easton, Nick Mancuso and Karl Pruner did commendable jobs in their roles, but the script was a little contrived and direction a little tepid for this kind of action film. Cynthia Preston is all but wasted in the typical wife who hates her husband's job and whose father was killed fifteen years earlier.
Not an unenjoyable movie, just flat.

Description
T2 - Arnold Schwarzenegger returns as the Terminator in this explosive action-adventure spectacle. Now he's one of the good guys, sent back in time to protect John Connor, the boy destined to lead the freedom fighters of the future. Linda Hamilton reprises her role as Sarah Connor, John's mother, a quintessential survivor who has been institutionalized for her warning of the nuclear holocaust she knows is inevitable. Together, the threesome must find a way to stop the ultimate enemy - the T-1000, the most lethal Terminator ever created. Co-written, produced and directed by James Cameron (THE TERMINATOR, ALIENS, TITANIC), this visual tour de force is also a touching human story of survival. TOTAL RECALL- Get ready for the ride of your life! This Special Edition DVD allows you to experience TOTAL RECALL the way it was meant to be seen and heard. Arnold Schwarzenegger is perfectly cast as Quaid, a 2084 construction worker haunted by dreams of Mars in this crowd-pleasing science fiction spectacle. Against the wishes of his sexy blonde wife (Sharon Stone), Quaid goes to Rekall, a company that implants artificial memories, so he can "remember" visiting the red planet that is now being settled by human inhabitants. However, Quaid is actually an amnesiac secret agent from Mars - or is he?
