KISS have always had an approach to their fans that on the one hand could be seen as ridiculously crass and on the other as truly generous. And this release, with its three expertly mastered and crammed DVDs--issued with three separate bonus discs--could easily support either view. The second installment in KISS's Kissology DVD series will sort out the casual fans from the true members of the KISS Army. The material included here, after all, begins in 1978, when the band released four separate solo albums at once and their massive popularity began to wane. It continues on through the controversial makeup-free period and ends in '91, as KISS struggled to cope with the ascendancy of grunge over the hair metal style they'd experienced a second boom with. The concert films are pretty great, but the full-length Tom Snyder Tomorrow show appearance is flat-out brilliant, as is their live performance on the short-lived sketch comedy show Fridays. And the highlight of the set has to be the "European theatrical version" of their made-for-TV film KISS Meets the Phantom of the Park. All those who've suffered through poorly degenerated video bootlegs will glory at this wonderfully restored piece of rock and roll camp. --Mike McGonigal

5 out of 5 stars Crazy Life with KISS.......2007-09-15

Hail to the gods of R'R from Germany. Waiting for decades finally our prayers have been heard. Kissology is simply larger than life it is a shrine to get down on your knees.

Volume 1 was great and Volume 2 is even greater with so many ever wanted clips and don't forget to mention the legendary Phantom project. Remember watching in the 70's with my father in a small movie seems like a timewarp back to yesterday. Still missing some more from the Elder Time.

Kind regards and waiting to see you finally in Europe.

5 out of 5 stars Still Rockin'..........2007-09-13

Very good follow up to last year's first set of Kisstory. Worth owning. Of course, if you have the first Kissology, this goes without saying. One thing, however, I would have liked to see more of is 1978. That was the year KISS absolutely ruled the world, yet the time they give it in the second set is minimal. Still, informatative, flashy, loud and all things KISS are on this second set. God bless Eric Carr. Can't wait til the third one...

5 out of 5 stars An Excellent Sequel !.......2007-09-12

First let me start by saying I attended my first KISS concert in 1975 at the age of fifteen. This is an important sidebar to this review. If you are an older KISS fan and was skeptical of a review of the "No Make Up" years, relax. The footage on this collection is priceless. The concert footage is great considering the amount of time that has passed. There are way too many highlights to mention them all but the 1990 concert really stands out amongst the rest. On both of the Kissology collections I am always excited to listen to the audio commentary tracks. They are a virtual rock n roll kisstory lesson! My final thoughts are about the late Eric Carr. This DVD is a loving tribute to a very underated talent. In retrospect the non-make up years are entertaining, informative and in the case of "Attack of the Phantom" pure fun! I highly recommend this to all KISS fans both young and old.

5 out of 5 stars Kiss: Kissology Volume II 1978-1991.......2007-09-11

I will try and give a different perspective of why this DVD is just solid gold instead of a blow by blow account that the other reviewers have given (which aren't bad by the way).

I own both vol 1 and 2 of the kissology series and I must say that when you watch them both you get a really clear perspective of the events that launched the band to super stardom, the deterioration of the original line up, and finally their rebirth in the non make up era. No other band in history had such an intense and complex history as do Kiss.

Vol 1 was a great snap shot of key performances that lead to the bands ultimate success. Vol 2 was equally as great if not better. The largo gig which was presented as one of the three optional bonus gigs in the package clearly displayed where the band was at in 1979 distracted and going through the motions. The Tom Snyder's interview really illustrated how dysfunctional the band members were becoming which finally led to the departure of Peter Criss.

The unmasked gig in Sydney Australia was very tight and the band seemed more like a solid unit with the addition of Eric Carr on drums. I was fortunate enough (and old enough) to go to the Melbourne gig of this tour and I must say that this concert had the same level of intensity as I remembered it all these years later, all the stuff from the elder and creatures of the night were just great. I wasn't fortunate enough to have any of this stuff in bootleg form so this box set had nothing but new material for me. I found the years between love gun through to creatures of the night to be the most fascinating era of the bands history, both musically and historically.

The non make up years were good and the musicians such as Vinnie Vincent and Bruce Kulick were great as you will see in some of there performances, but the band was going through an identity crisis and failed to deliver anything that was truly memorable, still they managed to pull off some good shows and is well presented in this video.

This box set is a testament to the bands long and Controversial history as you will clearly see neither one of the band members were ready to deal with the level of success kiss were able to achieve in such a short space of time, but were experienced enough to pick themselves back up with a new image and musical style and still sell platinum albums and fill arenas. now that saying something......................................

5 out of 5 stars PHANTOM OF THE PARK/ ATTACK OF THE PHANTOM.......2007-09-08

HEY! KEEP YOUR VHS OR DVDR BOOTLEG OF THE US PRINT OF "KISS MEETS THE PHANTOM OF THE PARK". THIS EURO THEATRICAL VERSION "ATTACK OF THE PHANTOMS" IS A TOTALLY DIFFERENT CUT THAN THE US VERSION. DIFFERENT SCENES, EDITED & UNEDITED DIALOG, DIFFERENT MUSIC, ETC. I WAS REALLY ANGRY THAT THEY CUT OUT ALMOST ALL OF ACE FREHLEY'S "ECK!" RESPONSES, AND THE CLASSIC POOLSIDE CHATTER!. ANYWAY, I'M NOT A KISS FANATIC, BUT I DO THINK THIS IS ONE OF THE GREATEST ROCK AND ROLL MOVIES EVER MADE. OH YEAH - THE PICTURE AND AUDIO ARE EXCELLENT TOO. THE REST OF THE DVD'S ARE COOL, BUT WOULD HAVE LIKED TO SEE MORE PROMO / INTERVIEWS OF THE '79 - '82 PERIOD - ESPECIALLY "THE ELDER". ALL HAIL ACE FREHLEY.

Director Marty DiBergi (Rob Reiner) solemnly alerts us to the glory that was Spinal Tap in his introduction to this "rockumentary" about the legendary British heavy-metal group, featuring lead guitarist Nigel Tufnel (Christopher Guest), lead singer David St. Hubbins (Michael McKean), bassist Derek Smalls (Harry Shearer), and a succession of drummers whose careers were cut short by spontaneously combusting on their stool, drowning in somebody else's vomit, or otherwise perishing in untimely fashion. Under DiBergi's studious interrogation, the band and their familiars retrace the band's evolution from head-bopping Mersey Beat poseurs to head-banging metal poseurs, each change in musical direction or tonsorial chic having little effect on the surviving trio's sublime idiocy. For, as St. Hubbins (he's the "deep" one, relatively speaking) sagely observes, "It's such a fine line between stupid and clever."

Happily for us, director Reiner, who developed the underlying story line with Guest and former Credibility Gap pranksters McKean and Shearer, stays squarely on the right side of the line, even as his writer-actors remain hilariously trapped on the other side. In lieu of a formal shooting script, the quartet created an extensive and detailed band history ripe with the sort of dead-pan detail that hard-core rock historians and screwball aficionados will savor on countless replays; with the three Tap members also musicians themselves, the "band" developed its stage act under the unsuspecting noses of L.A. club denizens, who accepted them as just as loud, flashy, sexist, and obvious as any other mullet-tressed, leather-garbed brigade of guitar slingers, circa 1984. The resulting footage thus manages to lob its punch lines and build its characters (including some thinly veiled character assassinations of various industry folks) with a loose, tossed-away verve rooted in the improvisational approach. This Is Spinal Tap remains the funniest, and most truthful, look at rock culture ever filmed and a personal best for all involved. --Sam Sutherland

5 out of 5 stars 11 Out of 10.......2007-09-07

This is a great movie. Not only is it a great mockumentary, but also a great movie too. It's perfect. It strikes perfectly with everything it's parodying.

I heard a lot of music artists were upset because they didn't see the humor in oit. To me, that makes it even funnier, it's as a good as real life.

The DVD is somewhat of an upgrade from the earlier Criterion edition. It includes a new commentary with McKean, Guest, and Shearer in character, a new interview with director Rob Reiner, over an hour of delted scenes/never-before=seen footage, 4 music videos, and plenty of other extras to love.

This is a definitely recommended DVD.

1 out of 5 stars Great subtle humor.......2007-08-02

This documockery is a collection of extremely hilarious moments sparsely scattered throughout the long movie. After a coworker described several funny parts, I eagerly purchased the movie. However, while watching the movie it became apparent that my coworker is a better story teller than this movie. My recommendation: rent it first!

5 out of 5 stars This is Spinal Tap.......2007-07-10

Brilliantly parodying the bloated excesses of the rock lifestyle, and gently poking fun at Martin Scorsese's "The Last Waltz," director Rob Reiner invented a new genre--the "mockumentary"--with this gut-busting 1984 spoof. Not enough can be said about the comedic talents of Guest, McKean, and Shearer, whose outrageous songwriting ("Big Bottom Girls," "Stonehenge") and improvisational dialogue ("Wot's wrong with being sexy?") are so convincing that many viewers thought Spinal Tap was a real act. Seen once or 30 times, "Spinal Tap" is relentlessly, ingeniously funny.

1 out of 5 stars Stretches a joke too far.......2007-06-30

I tried to like this movie, but it's really a 5 minute joke stretched too far. In fact it's gone on now for nearly a quarter century. Isn't enough is enough? Apparently not.

Yes, rock music can be silly sometimes, but basing careers out of a parody of it is surely stretching it.

I smiled a bit for the first few minutes. After that it felt like being hit over the head with a club. "Hey it's funny, see? Did you see that joke we made? Funny! Oh and here's another one! It's funnier than the similar one we made an hour ago! Isn't this hilarious?!"

I was never offended by it, if that's why you think I gave it a low rating. I was just bored at how tedious the film became.

Should have been a 5 minute skit on Saturday Night Live or something.

5 out of 5 stars Awesomely funny!.......2007-06-18

I love the dry humor of this movie. I've been a huge music fan for years and love the way the various scenarios are blown out of proportion. For example, the little bread, big meat catering problem. You'll have to watch the movie to know what I'm talking about. If you need more of an "in your face" sort of humor, then this movie is not for you.

3 out of 5 stars Could Have Been Better..........2007-09-12

I am in agreement with {Ratt15 "Ratt15"}.

Minus(s)
The two "short" form vhs tapes were basically slapped onto a dvd, and separated as such. They should have just put the videos on the dvd, removing any references of the two vhs tapes, and rearranging the videos however the powers that be saw fit; similar to Motley Crue's or Metallica's dvd music video collections. Due to the separation of the videos (because of the original vhs tapes they came on), the menu is lame.

Could have edited out the Little Richard footage, the old cheesy interviews, and the meaningless behind the scenes stuff, that was on the vhs tapes.

Could have had some new interviews, with blow-by-blow commentary from the ex members; it's always cool to hear what was going through the minds of the artists at the highs / lows of fame...BTM style.

No live concert clips; music videos of concert footage don't count.

Could have had some type of homage to Robin Crosby. Not that he was some guitar god, but he was a loved member of the band. I guess VH1's Behind The Music beat them to it.

Plus
The Ratt videos are on dvd

Peace,

cjr

Exclamations of religious awe are in order. Legendary and long sought-after, this live Led Zeppelin collection is nothing less than the rock music equivalent of the Holy Grail. Quite simply, this is what all the fuss was about.

Given that they were the biggest band in the world, Zeppelin were notoriously camera-shy in their heyday. Their official filmic legacy until now has been just the fascinating but flawed The Song Remains the Same. While this new set presents some previously unseen footage from the same 1973 Madison Square Garden gigs, its real wonders lie in the earlier (1970) Royal Albert Hall footage and the later Earls Court (1975) and Knebworth (1979) concerts. Everything here looks and sounds new-minted, thanks to painstaking restoration and remastering of both audio and visual sources, a Herculean labor of love on the part of co-producer Dick Carruthers working hand-in-glove with Jimmy Page. Trawling through thousands of yards of previously unseen film and unheard tape recordings--some with missing visuals, some with missing audio--Page and Carruthers have chosen only the best possible footage available. They were also at pains to make the segments segue seamlessly so that the viewer is treated to what feels like a continuous concert--just sample the transition from a grainy Super 8 "Immigrant Song" (Sydney, 1972) to "Black Dog" at MSG.

Highlights? It's not hyperbole to say that every powerhouse minute of this collection (some 230 minutes of concert footage plus another hour and a half of extra DVD material) is a rare musical and visual treat. But hearing Page's violin bow work on "Dazed and Confused" in DTS or Dolby 5.1 is an experience not soon forgotten. --Mark Walker

5 out of 5 stars Zeppelin is the greatest.......2007-09-05

Led Zeppelin is the greatest band ever formed hands down, and this dvd proves not only their genius but their perfected playing of their instuments. With Bonham's irremarkable beats and johnn paul jones steady hand they set the tempo for robert and jimmy to just unleash a spectrum of brilliantly mashed together sounds. So if you like to get the Led out then this is definately the DVD for you.

5 out of 5 stars Great DVD!.......2007-08-23

Upon receiving the DVD, I found the package professionally designed. The way the disc was designed to make any song accessible was really well done! All the footage was well enhanced and really allows the viewer see the kind of performance the band gave. In some cases the sound was lower in quality but it was probably because that was all they had to work with; still quite an accomplishment. What I really enjoyed was the extra footage from TV performances the band gave in other countries. They were a rare treat. I'm sure I will enjoy this package for years to come.

I wish all bands would take a lesson from Y&T. THIS is how a good music dvd should be! It's done on video, has good sound, has plenty of extras, and makes you feel like you are there. No annoying video effects, no fast camera cuts, and no interviews that interrupt the songs. It's packed full of songs and extras. The concert itself is nearly two hours long. Disc Two has the band in the dressing room talking about the show immediately after leaving the stage, the meet & greet, a few songs from the soundcheck, outtakes, and a few songs from the Bang Your Head festival. All of that plus a cd! More music dvds need to be like this, and more people need to know about Y&T!

3 out of 5 stars Not Led Zep at their very best.......2007-09-13

I'm not going to say anything about this DVD upgrade before it's released, obviously we're all expecting a lot. I will say however that in terms of the film itself I never thought it reflected Led Zeppelin in their best light. The concert itself was not Led Zep at their best (Jimmy Page himself has commented that "It wasn't a magic night"), and the fantasy sequences were just plain dull, even by 1970's stangards. It was especially frustrating that classic Zep tunes like "The Ocean" and "Over The Hills And Far Away" were sacrificed in order to accommodate the meandering self indulgence of "Dazed And Confused". The song was much more powerful in the band's earlier days when they performed a shorter version at their concerts more in common with the original studio album.
I don't want to come across as if I'm bashing Led Zeppelin, I love the band. I was thrilled when the two-DVD set came out with the Royal Albert Hall footage so that fans could finally see the band in their glory. I think a lot of fans remember The Song Remains The Same film with nostalgia, especially since there was (and really still *is*) so little "official" concert footage of them commercially available. Many will buy this more for that reason alone, even though it is *not* Led Zep at their very best. But it is still at least *something*, and of those people who will buy for that very reason I too will be among them.

5 out of 5 stars A movie of its era........2007-08-31

I have grown up listening to all the Led Zeppelin has to offer. With the upcoming re-release of this psychedelic film and respective soundtrack it gives die-hard Zeppelin fans and newcomers a chance to relive what Led Zeppelin is all about.

I also have a question to those who know. The recent releases are confusing to me and I'm hoping this isn't a dumb question. Is this Limited Collector's set the one that includes the DVD and soundtrack along with the original artwork t-shirt and bonus memorabilia? Just wondering.

5 out of 5 stars PLEASE STOP "REVIEWING" A RELEASE YOU DON'T HAVE YET!.......2007-08-30

Why do you people insist on 'reviewing' a release you don't have yet? And won't have for months?

I do wish Amazon would close the reviews for this until the release date (NOVEMBER 20th!) hits.

I can't think of anything more lame than to start awarding stars to a movie you don't even own.

4 out of 5 stars Wait to Watch and See it Before you Bash..........2007-08-27

To Old Quad...

From all the info I've been hearing, this release is going to be a major upgrade. We're talking sound and picture quality on par with the LZ 2-Disc DVD. And that is amazing, let me tell you. That surround sound speaker effect, BTW, is only available if you have the correct speaker set-up, and lots of money to get good speakers, so surround sound or not, if you're just watching through your TV speakers, it ain't gonna matter.

I've put in my pre-order already and can't wait until November! However, It seems (and this is the reason for 4 stars instead of 5) the main vid itself will be the same as the original, only remastered in sound and picture. We do get something like 40 or more minutes of extras, so that will probably include all the other tracks and such. Though I'm hoping that's not the case (and if it isn't, I'll delete this review and put it back up with a full 5 stars), that's what I and others are assuming considering the original vid was 137 minutes, and this is only 138 minutes. But that could also mean the fantasy sequences were cut (since a sizeable portion of them were shot without backing music... I think... :D) and it's just live footage. Of course, I loved the fantasy sequences from the original (you can see my review under the TSRTS DVD already available... 5 stars for the concert, 5 stars for the fantasy bits), but it would be nice if this was just the show(s).

Can't wait for the release and to see how I end up changing this review...

2 out of 5 stars Sound Remains The Same. No DTS or Original Surround Mix!.......2007-08-27

I am a big fan of Led Zeppelin having seen them live in 1977 a year after this film was released. We'll have to wait and see what the final audio on these Discs contain, but if it only has a regular Dolby Digital 5.1 mix as what has been widely reported, then Led Zep has blown it again IMO. Most people don't even consider sound quality anymore when listening to music even though we have better technology today. Regular Dolby Digital is the equivalent to an MP3, very Lossy sounding and crap compared to DTS or DVD-A at 24 bit / 96 kHz. I still own the original VHS, Betamax and DVD versions, and those are stereo, certainly Not the great discrete aggressive surround sound mix I remember hearing in 1976 at the theater. I remember in the theatrical version with the proper speaker set-up Jimmy Page's guitar feedback bouncing back and forth throughout the front and rear speakers along with Robert Plant's vocals on "Dazed And Confused." Totally awesome. That original theatrical mix is one of the "holy grail" Quad/surround mixes from the 1970's and it looks like we're never going to be able to hear it again.

As KISSology - Vol. 1 (1974-1977) announces loudly, all the chutzpah and bombast that made KISS so huge--the fire-breathing, the blood-dripping, the kabuki-mask make-up and platform shoes, the synchronized head-bobs--were in place from the very beginning. KISS's 1974 concert in San Francisco is virtually identical to their 1977 concerts in Japan and Houston, at the peak of their popularity. For hardcore fans, this opportunity to bask in the nuances of five performances of "Black Diamond" and six performances of "Firehouse" is essential viewing, but for the less committed the pleasures of KISSology lie in the bizarre collisions pop culture is heir to: Gene Simmons, in full costume, declaring himself "evil incarnate" on The Mike Douglas Show; Margaret Hamilton, done up in her Wizard of Oz Wicked Witch of the West garb, introducing KISS to the ever-cackling Paul Lynde on Lynde's 1976 Halloween special (the footage from this special doesn't include the tender ballad "Beth", undoubtedly due to the estrangement of drummer Peter Criss, who sang the band's highest charting U.S. single); and the truly surreal incident where KISS went to Cadillac, Michigan, and had breakfast with the entire city council wearing full KISS makeup before the band made a spectacular exit by helicopter. Rock & roll is full of strange phenomena, but KISS is one of the most inexplicable: An adolescent fever dream of superheroic hedonism that somehow achieved world-wide stardom and kept its career alive for over 30 years. KISS started as a deliberate cartoon, became a bad joke, and have re-emerged as a fond memory, still cranking out pyrotechnic spectacle. Three volumes of KISSology is probably excessive, but why stop the excess now? --Bret Fetzer

2 out of 5 stars IS THIS AS GOOD AS IT GETS?.......2007-08-18

I saw Kiss in '78 What a stage show! It a shame the footage doesn't look and sound better on this set. It's pretty low grade and it should not be the case. If they only had the forthought back then to record these shows better. It's hard to believe Kiss would not realize how important good quality footage would be now! These guys spent so much money on fantastic stage shows and then they forgot to tape the shows with top quality cameras? If these shows were professionally done they would have sold 10 times over this release. I'm glad I have it ,but it should be better!

1 out of 5 stars LOW QUALITY BOOTLEG CONCERTS! Don't expect much!.......2007-08-17

This DVD set is a complete waste of time! The video quality looks like 10th generation VHS! I have these concerts on bootleg VHS that are of better quality! It's obvious that KISS does not have good source material to use for these KISSology releases. The sound is about as bad as the picture! Maybe in Vol. 3 - they will FINALLY get it right - as they were taping alot more of their shows in the recent years. The DVDs will make good coasters to set your drinks on, when you have guests over - but thats about it. If you can pick this up - USED - on ebay dirt cheap - than it might be worth your time if your a die hard fan - if not - don't even bother!

5 out of 5 stars Kiss Rocks - Hard.......2007-08-06

THE GREATEST KISS DVD AROUND, until vol 2 of course !!

For huge Kiss fans like myself, it is a dream cometrue, kiss concerts from the 70's.

In the 70's Kiss were huge, no one could triumph over their reign of rock.

The concerts are great, but I always wonder if Ace did actually play in live concerts ? Hmmmmmmmm .....

Oh well never mind, it's a great dvd, buy it, now !!

As long as there is a need for adolescent male sexual fantasy, there will be an audience for Heavy Metal. Released in 1981 and based on stories from the graphic magazine of the same name (possibly the greatest publication to simultaneously provoke imagination and masturbation), the film has since become the most popular single title in Columbia/TriStar's entire film library. That's an amazing fact considering just how silly and senseless the movie really is--an aimless, juvenile amalgam of disjointed stories and clashing visual styles, employing hundreds of animators from around the world with a near-total absence of creative cohesion. It remains, for better and worse, a midnight-movie favorite for the stoner crowd--a movie best enjoyed by randy adolescents or near-adults in an altered state of consciousness.

With a framing story about a glowing green orb claiming to be the embodiment of all evil, the film shuttles through eight episodic tales of sci-fi adventure, each fueled by some of the most wretched rock music to emerge from the 1980s. The most consistent trademark is an abundance of blood-splattering violence and wet-dream sex, the latter involving a succession of huge-breasted babes who shed their clothes at the drop of a G-string. It's all quite fun in its rampantly brainless desire to fuel the young male libido, and for all its incoherence Heavy Metal remains impressive for the ambitious artistry of its individual segments. Courtesy of producer Ivan Reitman (who'd just scored a hit with Stripes), voice talents include several Canadian veterans of Second City comedy, including John Candy, Harold Ramis, Eugene Levy, and Joe Flaherty. --Jeff Shannon

5 out of 5 stars Fun movie to kick back and watch........2007-07-17

My only problem with this is the scene with Veterans of the Psychic War doesn't play out long enough to enjoy the whole song! As with any movie broken into pieces you'll have parts you love and other parts you could do without. I could watch an entire movie about the character who drives the taxi, Harry Canyon. It also is what introduced me to Dio and Sammy Hagar. I see comments about this being for 13 year olds, but I wouldn't agree. For me its like any cult film people enjoy, give it a try, you might have fun. If not, oh well.

3 out of 5 stars Good Ole Movie.......2007-05-26

Like many teenaged boys, my friends and I watched this one over and over when it came out back in 19-somethin' somethin'. It is worth watching for SciFi buffs, even if you're not a teen male, for the eclectic stories interwoven under a single theme. A good gamer movie. I have heard it was the first animated movie that was rated R, but I'm not sure if that's true. Not for children (nudity, violence, drugs, adult themes) but nowhere near as bad as some of the movies that are out nowadays. Listen for many celebrity voices and awesome soundtrack.

5 out of 5 stars Favorite guilty pleasure. I love this movie........2007-03-09

This movie is one of my favorite guilty pleasures. I have to watch it at twice a year or more.

5 out of 5 stars Heavy Metal (Collector's Edition).......2007-01-31

I had forgotten all about this movie! I was shopping for a copy of "Wizards" and found this. I saw it in the theater when it first was introduced. The DVD took me back - the sound and quality were beyond words! Several animated mini stories tied together with the mysterious evil green orb. The movie can best be summed with the unspoked phrase, "Don't call me 'Bitch'."

3 out of 5 stars Definitely represents its roots well.......2007-01-23

Back in the early 70's Marvel Comics made an offshoot anthology comic book geared toward adults. This book was called Heavy Metal and it's still going strong today. Most of the stories are science fiction and delve into some pretty strange ideas. The movie was made to in a way showcase the talent that came from the most popular artists and writers of that magazine. There was some up and coming Canadian talent doing the voice work like John Candy and Eugene Levy. While the idea sounds cool enough I think the execution leaves a little bit to be desired. This movie feels like it was a rush job considering some inconsistent production values and even some of the story content. Since it is an anthology of multiple stories I will go down the line so you can get an idea where the quality lies and where it falls short.

Soft Landing - This is the opening sequence that comes with the opening credits and it's the only story that connects itself to another story in the movie. The animation is a rough rotoscope technique that has only a wash of paint over real footage. I like how they did it. Very artistic. I have to admit it is a perfect representation of the magazine with its off the wall content and nice design. The hard rock soundtrack feel appropriate in this segment too. It's short, but it sure does make quite a good impression.

Grimaldi - This is the story Soft Landing connects itself to and it sets the stage for the theme that supposedly connects the other stories together. It's a weak way to put the anthology together at best. Still it does give the movie something to put the wildly different stories together. The animation is not bad and it can get a little gruesome at times. Again this is a short story since all it does it introduce the Loc Nar. You will see this segment between girl and Loc Nar throughout the movie to help keep the plotline going in the right direction in your mind... if you want to call it a plot.

Harry Canyan - This is the story of a New York taxi driver in the year 2031. The script has a classic film noir sense to it that adds some charm to this piece. I hear this story inspired parts of The Fifth Element so that's kind of cool. This story is classic Heavy Metal. The look of the cityscape and stuff reminds me of the graphic novel Hard Boiled as well as work from the artist Moebius. The animation looks like it's at an atrocious 12 frames per second (or less), which kills the coolness of the artwork sometimes. This one probably has the worst soundtrack of all the stories. The rock music just doesn't fit at all. This one is not really bad, but there is plenty to keep it from being really good.

Den - This is another classic Heavy Metal type story and it is a funny one. It's a Richard Corben styled story and I guess you can call it every geek boy's fantasy since the star (John Candy) is an 18 yr old nerd who turns into a muscular barbarian hero that always gets the girl. They play that theme up to the hilt with some funny narration by Candy, who is great in this one. This adventure/comedy has a little more story depth than the previous stories but the animation is still choppy. The soundtrack it a good classic fantasy styled piece that works well with this one. Even though the animation (again not the art, which is nice) leaves a lot to be desired the enjoyable story and funny dialog make up for it and make this story one of the better ones.

Captain Sternn - This come straight from a character created by Bernie Wrightson that was quite popular in the Heavy Metal magazine. Sternn is an anti-hero in the magazine and in the movie he is now being brought up on charges for his evil deeds (fans of the mag back then must have loved the irony of this). The animation has a more cartoonish feel to it and does't try to make the characters all that realistic like the other short films in this movie. However the animation is LOT cleaner here and I wished the rest of the stories were this polished. The story itself is entertaining as well, but ultimately it's all just one big build up for a wacky yet funny punch line at the end. Amusing enough, but it won't carry the movie.

B-17 - This is the scariest of the bunch. A classic horror film created by renowned horror comic artist Mike Ploog. The story lends itself to being scary folklore to frighten WWII pilots or something like that and it pulls it off very well. Artistically it's eerie and has a classic 40's feel to the drawings and the animation seems to be a lot better. Some of the artwork does get limited by the fact it's an animated story, but that only lends more to the style. This is one of the definite shining gems of the movie.

So Beautiful and So Dangerous - This can be called Cheech and Chong in space. It's a mix of sophomoric drug humor, interpersonal relationships with robots, and universal perspective. The stoner aliens didn't do it for me at all. Then again that is a certain kind of humor not everybody gets into. The interaction between the Pentagon secretary and robot is pretty funny for adult humor. Again John Candy brings a lot of fun in his role as the robot. What I found interesting was the size comparisons they played with in this short. You have a ship many times larger than the Pentagon controlled by a robot and two half-baked aliens, which docks with an even more massive space station. The animation is on par with the better stuff in this movie, but the soundtrack is yet another hard rock throwaway that doesn't do anything to enhance the story. Ultimately this one is merely okay in my book. Nothing special.

Tarrna - This story is the best of the best in this anthology. Nothing compares to it in cinematic execution, which is probably why they saved it for last. The animation is still a relatively low frame rate (by Disney's standards) but there is a lot of rotoscoping done that makes those frames very effective and very beautiful. The soundtrack fits the short film better than any music did on the previous stories. The story is the best of the bunch too. The settings are cool with the futuristic wasteland. The designs are definitely a Moebius influence with some breathtaking landscapes and wild technology scattered about. Of course this story also resolves the plot devised that started the whole movie to begin with so everything is tied up nice and neat. If the other short films (aside from B-17) put this much attention in the execution of their perspective works then you would have a much better movie all around.

Heavy Metal did accomplish what it set out to do in that it showcased the magazine in a time when it was at its highest in popularity. For the non-Heavy Metal Magazine fan it's not as good. Keep in mind the content has lots of blatant animated nudity, sexual situations and graphic violence, Definitely not for the kids. The stories are interesting enough, but that might not be enough for some who expect quality production values all the way through. If you're a fan of the comic book then you probably already seen it and love it. If you are the type of person who jams to classic rock and have that biker rebel streak in you then you might find Heavy Metal refreshing. The rest of you will have to just make a judgment call. It has equal parts good and bad qualities so take that for whatever you see it.

5 out of 5 stars Great Concert DVD.......2007-09-15

This DVD more than fufilled my expectations. Great performances of some of the best tunes I know.

Yes Geoff Tate was a little bit of a ham - but it worked and worked well. I don't understand what people expect. Enjoy the band, enjoy the songs, enjoy the spectacle - and relax already!

4 out of 5 stars Excellent Video. Stupid anti-Bush signs........2007-09-14

This is an excellent compilation Video DVD of Operation Mindcrime I and II. The picture clarity and sound is outstanding. It felt like I was at a play. I would rate the entire DVD excellent, but I can't. Their anti-Bush/anti-Iraq gestures prevent me from doing so, but it's great entertainment. When will these groups learn that no one cares about their political opinions. If you love Queensryche's music, then this is a must-have DVD for your collection. As for the anti-Bush signs and gestures, just remember that these bands are misguided, and don't know what the heck their talking about when it comes policy. I'm pro-Bush all the way, and nothing I've seen on this DVD will ever change that! He and I believe in the same thing - lets skin these terrorist cowards alive. Kill em' all I say.

2 out of 5 stars Musically sound, Morally putrid .......2007-08-28

While this band is technically very good to great musically, and the operatic drama is refreshing; the lyrics and attitude should have concentrated on on things the players actually understand. Politics is not among that repetoire.

3 out of 5 stars Not what I expected.......2007-08-26

Well I thought this would be a good addition to our concert dvd collection to listen to in our in home bar. While I love Queensryche, I have never seen them in concert and therefore was not aware their stage show is more like going to a play. I have gone to a lot of concerts and have not seen acting on stage. I guess some of you die hards like my husband expected it but it was distracting to me. It was hard to enjoy the beautiful, creative songs while watching such bad acting. And might I add that I felt as though ALL of the songs were lipsynched because the vocals were just too exact and sounded exactly the recorded versions. Bottom line, I would've rather played their cd's on my ipod than watch the heavy metal soap opera.

5 out of 5 stars Astonishing Performance .......2007-08-23

Woow,, Nice guitar play, nice quality, nice theater and the best of all is Geoff Tate, his voice.. woow he sang like the old days, like the studio version of Operation Mindcrime I!! and his acting along with Pamela Moore,, they are terrific.. he is indeed an artist..

People know this guy is technically brilliant but do people know his songwriting abilities and his FEEL when playing these amazing songs. Paul has a knack for writing a "simple sounding" fun song, but when you watch what he is actually playing....you almost want to cry. I am a drummer, and not a guitarist, but I know it when I see it. Yes, a prodigy, who is only 1/4 way through an incredible career. Has he produced any "desert island discs" yet, not sure. Who would I want as a guitarist in my rock band? Eddie VH, Yngwie Malmsteen, Tony MaCalpine, Satriani, Vai, Greg Howe, Steve Howe, Richie Kotzen, Jeff Kollman....NO, Paul Gilbert. Check out his work with PintSize as well.....

If you like Paul Gilbert and play guitar your already looking to buy this, and you should get it.Just be warned that you will rewind again and again on particular parts if your not familiar with the scale/mode/arpeggio he is using, as some parts go by very fast. The good news is he tells you exactly what hes doing at all times-every chord, almost every single note-so even if you didnt know something, by the end of the segment you have gained some additional knowledge beyond"I can play a new riff!"

After the main portion of the DVD there are a few lesons on technique, some live footage, and a song sang under the credits, so you will get a great amount of entertainment value out of this as well.

All in all you will probably have a few new ideas of how to play your guitar, even if you have to go over sections repeatedly. Its worth it.Its funny.Go get one.

If you're a Paul Gilbert Fan you will love this video. He's got a great personality and he shows you all of the cool riffs from his new album of the same name. My only complaint is that he dosen't include any tab either in printed form or "pop up" screens during the video. The video moves fast so be prepared to use the pause and slow functions to try and keep up.

If he were to publish some tablature on his website that went along with the video it would help make this video a 5 star product

I have nothing but praise for Paul Gilbert. He's a natural teacher. Informative, never boring and I take a special interest in the way he creates music.
