Supreme silliness doesn't stop The Day After Tomorrow from being lots of fun for connoisseurs of epic-scale disaster flicks. After the blockbuster profits of Independence Day and Godzilla, you can't blame director Roland Emmerich for using global warming as a politically correct excuse for destroying most of the northern hemisphere. Like most of Emmerich's films, this one emphasizes special effects over such lesser priorities as well-drawn characters and plausible plotting, and his dialogue (cowritten by Jeffrey Nachmanoff) is so laughably trite that it could be entirely eliminated without harming the movie. It's the spectacle that's important here, not the lame, recycled plot about father and son (Dennis Quaid, Jake Gyllenhaal) who endure an end-of-the-world scenario caused by the effects of global warming. So sit back, relax, and enjoy the awesome visions of tornado-ravaged Los Angeles, blizzards in New Delhi, Japan pummeled by grapefruit-sized hailstones, and Manhattan flooded by swelling oceans and then frozen by the onset of a modern ice age. It's all wildly impressive, and Emmerich obviously doesn't care if the science is flimsy, so why should you? --Jeff Shannon

Description

When global warming triggers the onset of a new Ice Age, tornadoes flatten Los Angeles, a tidal wave engulfs New York City and the entire Northern Hemisphere begins to freeze solid. Now, climatologist Jack Hall (Dennis Quaid), his son Sam (Jake Gyllenhaal) and a small band of survivors must ride out the growing superstorm and stay alive in the face of an enemy more powerful and relentless than any they've ever encountered: Mother Nature!

4 out of 5 stars Good Movie.......2007-08-28

Typical "don't believe the scientist until its too late" plot. However, 21st century special effects makes for an entertaining movie.

1 out of 5 stars Beyond belief.......2007-08-23

This is the biggest piece of balderdash I've seen in a while. Environmentalists and climatologists everywhere must be having severe cases of mental diarrhea due to embarrassment from this remarkably absurd rip-off of scientific theories. It makes Night of the Living Dead look like science fact. I suppose if I had seen it on a huge screen the visuals might have been impressive but on a TV screen - forget it. The only thing that saves this loony tune waste is the always exceptional performance of Jake Gyllenhaal. In fact, I suspect the only people who should buy this DVD are die-hard Gyllenhaal fans and folks who think it might someday become one of those "its so bad its good" cult films. Otherwise, don't waste your money or your time.

3 out of 5 stars A decent movie that takes pause to think.......2007-08-09

All of our main characters survive that in reality most if not would have died had these events really happened. They built a pretty good story around a worst case scenario and the acting wasn't bad, not great but 3 stars. I've watched this movie a couple of times and I think that's all the life I will get out of it, worth watching, but not worthy of library space.

4 out of 5 stars Horrible movie, but inexplicably enjoyable.......2007-08-07

If you look at this from the point of view of a film connoisseur, The Day After Tomorrow is simply awful. The plot doesn't really make sense, the science is nonsensical, the acting is nothing special, the dialogue is downright horrendous, and the film sort of seemed like Independence Day and Deep Impact smushed together into one giant cliche.

Well, I enjoyed both of those movies, and I enjoyed this one. There's something endearing about it despite how truly poor quality it really is. You can practically see what's going to happen before it does, yet somehow you still get excited when it does happen. I watched the ending 3 or 4 times in a row. And the special effects, which are really the only remarkable part of this movie, are spectacular. The science is bad, but they twist the explanation just well enough that you can convince yourself that it MIGHT be possible, sort of like Jurassic Park. The acting gets the movie done. The only really awful part is the dialogue, but as long as you're not too finicky, you will probably enjoy this movie.

Two-star film, but I had a five-star viewing experience and would watch it again.

3 out of 5 stars It may not be smart, but it sure is pretty..........2007-08-07

As improbable as `The Day After Tomorrow' really is, it doesn't have to be realistic to fulfill its purpose. It's not there to really engage us emotionally or mentally as much as visually, and in that visual sense `The Day After Tomorrow' soars. Now director Roland Emmerich is no stranger to the science fiction disaster film, and not unlike his previously successful entries, this one also sports some amazing special effects. From twirling twisters to tidal waves and that slowly creeping icy air, `The Day After Tomorrow' sports an amazing lineup of natural disasters. Watching the multiple tornadoes rip through the California city is impressive, and watching gallon upon gallon of water drown New York City is nothing short of breathtaking. So, it's safe to say that what `The Day After Tomorrow' lacks in brains it makes up for in cool CGI effects.

So, what of this plot? Well, it appears that weather patterns are showing an alarming possibility that soon, within the next hundred or so years, we could undergo yet another ice-age. That's where Jack Hall comes in, a climatologist who discovers the evidence to support this. Of course no one will pay attention to Hall and his discovery will prove true, except not even Hall expected it to happen so soon. The real story though involves Jack's son Sam who has traveled to New York with some class mates and ends up in the middle on a flood that destroys the city. Jack then has to race to his rescue before he freezes to death.

As you can see, the plot is plenty far fetched, but the action more than makes up for it. As Sam and his friends try to survive they must find food and medical supplies while fighting the increasing cold, the rising waters and a pack of temperamental wolves who happen to escape confinement during the flood. The wolf pack has been met with mixed reviews, as in some loved it an others found it ridiculous and unnecessary. I loved it. It was an interesting and intense inclusion, even if it wasn't the slightest bit realistic. When the movie as a whole is completely unbelievable and, yes, unrealistic, then there's nothing wrong with adding even more layers of complete and utter fiction as long as it looks good.

As far as the acting is concerned, it's all decent. Your standard action film acting if you so desire to label it. Dennis Quaid is one of those actors who I've always enjoyed yet felt he never really tapped into his potential, save except his performance in 2002's `Far From Heaven', and here he delivers but again it's nothing beyond acceptable. Jake Gyllenhaal is an actor with a future, that's for sure, and his performances are always believable and effortless. Here he does a great job juggling emotions amid a hole-riddled plot. Emmy Rossum should really stick to singing, as her grandest performance was in `The Phantom of the Opera' but at least here she delivers a stronger performance than her `Poseidon' disaster. The strongest performance here though came from the actress with the least screen time, Sela Ward. She is just the definition of class and she manages to instill emotion in a rather emotionless film.

So, in the end `The Day After Tomorrow' delivers some extraordinary eye candy and is worthy of any science fiction action movie buffs library. No, it's not smart, but it doesn't need to be; and to answer the question of some in regards to the movie's title, it refers to the day `AFTER' the calamity, when everything is not what it once was. Come on people; is it really that hard to figure out?

After a government-spawned "superflu" wipes out more than 90 percent of the earth's population, the devastated survivors must decide whether to support or resist the advances of a mysterious stranger from way down South (heh-heh) who wishes to claim this new world order for himself. Although the six-hour length makes it nigh-impossible to digest in one sitting, this well-paced adaptation of Stephen King's apocalyptic magnum opus ranks among the best adaptations of the author's work, with strong performances from Gary Sinise, Miguel Ferrer, and especially Jamey Sheridan as a good-old-boy version of Old Scratch. The opening scene, set to the strains of Blue Oyster Cult's "Don't Fear the Reaper," is one of the most chilling things ever shot for television. Director Mick Garris is no stranger to King's world, having also helmed Sleepwalkers, the recent television remake of The Shining, and the upcoming Desperation. --Andrew Wright

5 out of 5 stars Captain Trips is tasty .......2007-08-02

When I saw this movie all by my self when I was young it freaked me out! Considering that this movie was made for TV it could not have been done better...I plan on read the book soon, sense I loved the movie so much...this in my opinion is the greatest story the King ever wrote, considering that there are so many others just as good.

Watch it...and pick up some Flue Buddy!

4 out of 5 stars Good adaption of the monsterous novel by Stephen King.......2007-07-31

My lady and I both agreed that this may have been more accepted as a major motion picture, but you could not cram this story into that type of time frame. Instead, Mick Garris took the bull by the horns and along with King, set out and made a TV mini series of sorts with it. The film does follow the book fairly well although I did notice some inaccuracies but nobody is perfect. The story is about a super flue virus that is accidentally unleashed after a failed quarantine at a military testing facility. One man who is a guard on duty flees with his wife and baby, only to end up finding out that he had been infected before he left. In 3 months 99% of the population of the Earth is dead, and what is left are two camps of survivors, one good and one not so good. The bad guys are assembled by a spawn of hell, some sort of supernatural demonic power that takes on a human form as a long haired guy in a jacket and cowboy boots. The man is called Randall Flag and he is played by Jamie Sheridan. The good people have dreams of an elderly woman in Nebraska who summons them to follow her to Boulder, Colorado where they will all meet and eventually take on Flagg and his followers. I am dismayed at the reviews that say the casting is bad, this cast is just great! Gary Sinise, Molly Ringwald and Rob Lowe just to name a few, and they are all fit for the role that they play in The Stand. The scenes of an empty New York city are very sombering and the ideals of good vs. evil are shown exactly as they should be. I think I liked Rob Lowe as Nick Andros the best, Lowe plays Nick who is a deaf mute and he is amazing in this movie. If people liked the book it is a must see, and even if people did not read the book they still might like it anyways. I gave it 4 stars instead of 5 because the sound quality is not great, not bad just could have been better. Grab a bag of popcorn and turn off the phone and see how the world ends!

1 out of 5 stars Decent adaptation, but appalling cast .......2007-07-06

The Stand is by far the greatest Stephen King novel and one of my personal favorites. And I am not saying this as a die-hard King fan so I believe I am not biased on the subject. However, the movie was anything but great. As such, I am greatly surprised with all the good reviews!

First, in defense of the movie, the adaptation was decent. It wasn't good mind you (how can it be with a 1200 page book), but decent. It did catch the "over-all" drift of the plot but not a bit more. The movie should have been at least double the length (just like they did with Shogun running over 10 hours) to help truly grasp the characters and the "new world" that King built in the novel. Maybe that is too unfair to ask...so be it.

The question comes begging, why only one star? The acting was some of the worst I have ever seen in a film! I felt like I was watching some homemade video that a group of teenagers did for a senior project! Over 90% of the actors made me cringe at their performance over the most basic interactions!
The graphics were ABSOLUTELY PITIFUL to the point where I laughed at the ridiculousness of it all (the nuclear bomb at the end completely looked like a homemade rocket!!!). Not to mention the 80's style rock music deterred from the gloomy atmosphere that comes from the destroyed world King described in the novel.

I actually ended up fast forwarding through the rest of the movie after the half way point because I could no longer endure the pain of watching such a poorily budgeted film attempt to portray one of the greatest books ever written! What a waste of my time!

3 out of 5 stars A bit more true-to-the-book than many other King movies, but ............2007-06-12

It's been too many years since I've read the book, but I recognize plot deviations when I see them. At least this movie didn't veer as far away as Jurassic Park did from *its* book ... or as far away as *other* King movies did from *their* books!

No, really. This movie overall was pretty well done. I, of course, would have chosen some different actors and actresses to play some of the characters, especially Frannie and Nadine, but the remainder of the cast sufficed. The acting was great. The human interaction was very realistic and enjoyable.

I gave this movie a "medium-ish" rating because it really *tried.* And trying is very important. It's just that I read the book first and *everyone* knows better to expect a movie to equal the book it's based upon, right?! :-)

5 out of 5 stars Hollywood Version Different??.......2007-06-11

I just rented this from Hollywood Video and it was on one 2 sided DVD.
Parts 1-2 side A and 3-4 on side B.
However something is missing here when you flip the disc!........
Side B (Pt 3 Betrayl) opens up with Stu crudely operating on someones body on the floor. (Who is this that dies?)
Ossie Davis(the judge)is also there(When and where did he appear before-storyline?)
Gary S.and Molly R.are already lovers and shes pregnant (When and where did they hookup?)Last thing I saw in Pt 2(Dreams)was Stu telling a jealous Harold he wouldnt cut in on his action.......
There is alot more but my question is are these scenes on the 2 disc set or just not explained? I believe the running time 366 min is the same.
Overall I found it to be one of the best TV mini-series ever.
Those that disliked the Christian elements should take heed. This was truly about the everyday struggles we all go through. The constant battle of good/evil,love/hatred,positive/negative,caring/uncaring,beauty/ugleness,day/night,death/birth and yes God and Satan! It was a story of struggles and having faith that good will over come evil! Even Satans/Flaggs men knew it was wrong but where tempted with lies and promises.Trashman even asked for forgiveness in the end and brought the bomb to end it all.The hand of God was very symbolic, though a bit chessy effect.
If you got anything out of this beautiful epic remember this:
"THE GREATEST LIE THAT SATAN HAS GOTTEN US TO BELIEVE...IS THAT HE DOES NOT EXIST"...Scary stuff indeed: Where will you be a second after you die?
If you cant anwser that with 100% accuracy you need to take a STAND.......

Third in a series of films based on the bestselling novels by Tim LaHaye and Jerry Jenkins, Left Behind: World at War finds the post-Rapture Earth an even bleaker place than in the previous movies. As the Antichrist himself, Nicolae Carpathia (Gordon Currie), uses his newfound powers as head of the world government to bring war and plague on every nation, the American president (Louis Gossett Jr.) teams with a Christian resistance fighter (Jessica Steen) to try to stop him. Meanwhile, series hero Buck Williams (Kirk Cameron) discovers that Carpathia's biological front in a coming apocalypse is particularly devious: Freshly published Bibles are carrying a deadly disease ravaging thousands--and may very likely claim Buck's new bride. Buck's father-in-law, pilot Rayford Steele (Brad Johnson), has problems of his own facing the not-inconsiderable temptations of former flight attendant Hattie Daniels (Chelsea Noble), now one of Carpathia's many lovers. Directed by Craig R. Baxley (Rose Red), Left Behind: World at War is particularly crisp and effective drama, even when the action stops, as it often does, for many of the principals to pray for guidance. Charles Martin Smith (The Untouchables), not seen often enough these days, has a brief but powerful part as the U.S. vice-president. --Tom Keogh

Description

In the prophesied world of the Book of Revelation, global icon and world leader Nicolae Carpathia (Gordon Currie - Left Behind) has finally done the unimaginable - he has managed to unite the world in peace - and bring an end to the bloodshed that has ruled the world since the beginning of time. American president, Gerald Fitzhugh (Academy Award winner Lou Gossett, Jr.- An Officer and a Gentleman- Best Supporting Actor 1981), has shared that dream, and has dedicated his Presidency to making sure that the world's most powerful nation didn't stand in the way of that dream. But when a failed assassination attempt opens his eyes to an underground world and a horrifying glimpse into a sinister conspiracy, Fitzhugh must come to terms with the agonizing truth - World War III is pounding at the door- and his dedication to the dream of peace has left America powerless to defend herself. With the help of investigative reporter Buck Williams (Kirk Cameron - Left Behind, TV's "Growing Pains") and his underground Tribulation Force, Fitzhugh battles against a ticking clock, insurmountable odds, and his own closed mind, to try to find a way to stop the death of millions of people, and perhaps the end of history itself.

4 out of 5 stars This is an enjoyable movie that everyone will love........2007-09-04

Hey i just watched the movie and it was great everyone should see it.
the only disappointment was the end they just left me hanging they need to make another movie to finish the story.

4 out of 5 stars Rapture well explained.......2007-07-20

I have nothing bad to say, I mean as a reader of the left behind series, I got to see the movies and they are very good, little things differ but the overall content and message is there. NO need for hollywood special effects, but it is just the way the message is explained. Get all the movies. Actually I have bought most of the christians movies and I have nothing bad to say about any of them.

5 out of 5 stars Exactly what I wanted.......2007-05-14

I'm very pleased with the purchase I made. I bought a DVD and it was brand new unopened as advertised. It came in a timely manner, and was exactly as I expected.

5 out of 5 stars It was great!!!.......2007-05-07

If you have seen the first two then you have to see this one it will leave you breath less!!!

3 out of 5 stars The Big Let Down.......2007-02-20

I am a big fan of Cloud Ten Pictures. I have seen all of their movies and one of their documentaries. I liked all of them-except this one. I remember getting all excited about it. I remember crying becasue I thought the UPS truck wouldn't come to deliever it on the day the website said it would (but it did, just later than I thought it would.). I remember watching the trailer over and over again. I remember when it finally came, I was extermely eager to put it in.

But then it all changed. About fifteen minutes into the movie, it was already starting to get boring. However, as a loyal Cloud Ten Pictures fan, I forced myself to sit through the whole movie. I was VERY disappointed with it. It was very boring, and some parts just made no sense whatsoever. For instance, when Bruce is having that dream that Nicolae has the doctor's mask on, pulls it down, and says "You know who I am. We used to be good friends." What's up with that? It was just random, and made no sense.

Also, Nicolae is in this movie for fifteen minutes I'f guess at the most. The scenes with Nicolae in them are the only worthwhile scenes. The only reason I gave this film three stars is becasue of the noteworthy ending with Fitzuh and Nicolae.
If you are thinking about buying this movie, don't. It's boring and, at times, makes no sense. Try some of Clkoud Ten Pictures' other movies like the Apocalyp[se triology instead!

20,000 Leagues Under the Sea gets a dose of On the Beach in Irwin Allen's visually impressive but scientifically silly Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea. While the Seaview, the world's most advanced experimental submarine, maneuvers under the North Pole, the Van Allen radiation belt catches fire, giving the concept "global warming" an entirely new dimension. As the Earth broils in temperatures approaching 170 degrees F, Walter Pidgeon's maniacally driven Admiral Nelson hijacks the Seaview and plays tag with the world's combined naval forces on a race to the South Pacific, where he plans to extinguish the interstellar fire with a well-placed nuclear missile. But first he has to fight a mutinous crew, an alarmingly effective saboteur, not one but two giant squid attacks, and a host of design flaws that nearly cripple the mission (note to Nelson: think backup generators). Barbara Eden shimmies to Frankie Avalon's trumpet solos in the most formfitting naval uniform you've ever seen, fish-loving Peter Lorre plays in the shark tank, gloomy religious fanatic Michael Ansara preaches Armageddon, and Joan Fontaine looks very uncomfortable playing an armchair psychoanalyst. It's all pretty absurd, but Allen pumps it up with larger-than-life spectacle and lovely miniature work. --Sean Axmaker

Description

A routine scientific expedition to the North Pole turns into a race to save all mankind when a radiation belt in space causes a fiery inferno on Earth. Admiral Nelson (Walter Pidgeon) and the crew of the atomic submarine Seaview battle saboteurs, giant sea-creatures and attacks by enemy submarines as they race to prevent global catastrophe. Renowned disaster film producer, Irwin Allen, produces and directs an all-star cast including Joan Fontaine, Barbara Eden, Peter Lore, and Frankie Avalon. The stunning visual effects and breathtaking underwater photography make this one of the most respected sci-fi adventure classics of all time.

4 out of 5 stars A Green-Washed Seaview.......2007-07-10

I can just imagine the marketing department at Fox scouring its archives for products it can tie in with today's environmental concerns. The "Global Warming" edition of the Voyage movie is a rather obvious repackaging of an old product with a glitzy extra or two, but the association with climate change is a stretch. In the movie, the sky catches fire and Earth's temperatures rise dramatically. Global warming, indeed.

I was happy to see the movie released with extras such as an isolated music track, commentary, and production gallery, but disappointed with the quality of each of the features. The music track is well recorded, but unlike the special edition of "Fantastic Voyage," there's no dialog to fill the passages which have no music. Long stretches of silence are the result.

With the commentary playing, I found myself groaning every time Voyage "expert" Tim Colliver launched into another of his glib ad-libs, which were riddled with obvious grammatical errors and verbal gaffs. Colliver mispronounces "depth" "Depp" - as in Johnny Depp - twice. He trips over his tongue, then ironically notes that he "talks for a living." I hope he saves his money. Colliver also points out that he feels obligated to tell us the differences between the Voyage movie and novelization... and vice versa!

While the video quality of the film is excellent on this DVD, it is no better than on the version backed with "Fantastic Voyage" which Fox released several years ago. If you already own that version, there is no need to replace it with this one. If you need to spend money, buy Fantastic Voyage (Special Edition) instead. Now THAT's how you do a commentary!

4 out of 5 stars Irwin Allen's triumph now remastered with loads of extras.......2007-06-22

Great early 60's sci fi with some cool extras including an interesting short feature on global warming, nice gallery of theatrical posters and lobby cards, good informative commentary and some good information on the "making of".

There also is some photos of the actual props used in the film. Unfortunately the quality of the photographs is rather weak and there's really no decent close up shots. You can rotate the image, but it's really lacking in detail.

The movie's a fun thriller with espionage, giant sea creatures, believeable sets and props and some above average acting with Walter Pigeon, Peter Lorre, Barbara Eden and a large cast of lesser knowns as the crew members, including pop star Frankie Avalon.

One thing that seems rather humorous though but in retrospect also is sad at the same time is all the smoking that takes place by the cast, especially Peter Lorre who seems like he has a cigarette in his mouth in nearly every shot he appears.

All in all a very enjoyable underwater adventure film that will please any baby boomer age fan of sci fi and Irwin Allen disaster pics.

A recommended purchase especially at this low price point.

5 out of 5 stars Relentless Action, Wonderful Miniature & Process Effects--Great Fun........2007-06-16

You either suspend your disbelief, or you don't. If scientific accuracy is important to you, don't invest in this movie. If colorful action, and in the main, great special effects are your cup of tea, hmmm....this might be a movie for you. Overall, Irwin Allen's best work. Unlike some of his later (big) films, he directed Voyage as well as produced it. And very unlike The Swarm (which he also directed, I hate to admit) this movie works. It cooks, in more sense than one.
The miniature special effects were brilliant for the time and still hold up today. Forget computers, all this stuff was created using miniature and process photography and is wonderful to watch. Irwin Allen was his strongest directing action scenes. Fortunately, Voyage is loaded with action, much of it far more intelligent than a lot of what is passed off today as big budget CGI potboilers.
The extra production art and photos are worth the price of admission. Barbara Eden looks wonderful, both in the film and in her interview. Hats off! Great, fun flick.

4 out of 5 stars Classic Allen Sci-Fi.......2007-06-11

Nice to see Fox finally give one its sci-fi classics the DVD treatment it deserves- now I can only hope they do the same for " Journey to the Center of the Earth"

4 out of 5 stars Science on the Brink of Destruction.......2007-05-05

See...the Van Allen Radiation Belt catch fire in the vacuum of space!
See...giant icebergs sink to the bottom of the ocean.
See...Barbara Eden's shapely legs.
See...Frankie Avalon sing during moments of incredible DANGER!
See...a rubber octopus capture divers as they swim by.

See it before you laugh to tears in this unintentionally funny scifi "masterpiece" of Master Disaster Irwin Allen!

A hilarious film with overacting the likes of which you rarely see. Walter "Morbius" Pidgeon plays the overly exhuberant Admiral Harriman "Crash Dive" Nelson as he takes his "have submarine, will travel to any marine disaster" to fix the Van Irwin Allen Belt!

Many early science fiction films are now, quite inadvertently (and in most cases undeservedly), objects of camp attention: we laugh at the silly makeup, tin-can special effects, and the naive "high-tech" dialogue. Planet of the Apes is no such film. Its intelligent script, frightening costuming, and savagely effective conclusion (which needs no big-budget special effects to augment its impact) remain both potent and relevant. When Colonel George Taylor (the fabulous Charlton Heston) crash lands his spacecraft on what seems to be an unfamiliar planet, he is captured and held prisoner by a dominant race of hyperrational, articulate apes. However, the ape community is riven with internal dissention, centered in no small part on its policy toward humans, who, on this planet, are treated as mindless animals. Befriended and ultimately assisted by the more liberal simians, Taylor escapes--only to find a more terrifying obstacle confronting his return home. Heavy-handed object lessons abound--the ubiquity of generational warfare, the inflexibility of dogma, the cruelty of prejudice--and the didactic fingerprints of Rod Serling are very much in evidence here. But director Franklin Schaffner has a dark, pop-apocalyptic sci-fi vision all his own, and time has not dulled the monumental emotional impact of the film's climactic payoff shot. If you don't know what I'm talking about here, you owe it to yourself to check out this stone classic, and even if you do, see it with fresh eyes; and don't be surprised if you get the chills all over again... and again... and again. --Miles Bethany

Description

Charlton Heston and Roddy McDowall star in this legendary science fiction masterpiece. Astronaut Taylor (Heston) crash lands on a distant planet ruled by apes who use a primitive race of humans for experimentation and sport. Soon Taylor finds himself among the hunted, his life in the hands of a benevolent chimpanzee scientist (McDowall).

5 out of 5 stars "Don't look for it, Taylor, you might not like what you find." .......2007-08-13

Since most people have seen the original 1968 "Planet of the Apes" (multiple times, I might add) this review is not so much intent on introducing the film to new viewers but rather provoking people to re-discover it, as I did recently.

THE PLOT: George Taylor and two other astronauts experience some type of time warp in space and crashland on a distant planet over 2000 years in the future. They soon discover that highly evolved apes rule the planet while humans are disdained "animals."

WHAT WORKS: First of all, Charlton Heston is outstanding as the disillusioned humanity-hating Taylor. Taylor is brilliantly put in the ironic position of representing humankind to the apes. Although I love Heston in other films like "Ben-Hur" and "The Ten Commandments," I believe Taylor is his best role and performance. Heston was, incidentally, 43 years old at the time of filming. He's utterly captivating in the role and charismatic in an anti-hero sense.

The first 35 minutes of the film involve the crashland, the search over the wastelands, the discovery of primitive humans and, finally, the potent cornfield revelation of the intelligent rulers of the planet. This segment is one of my favorite parts of the film. The desert wastelands are awe-inspiring and one can't help but enjoy Taylor's amusingly pessimistic antics. This part of the film is highly mysterious in nature. Where ARE they? Why are there so few signs of life? Did Taylor hate humanity so much that he was literally willing to escape his home world? Who made the strange X-shaped scarecrows? Why can't the primitive "cavemen" speak? Who planted the crops of corn?

When the story shifts to the ape city the film takes on an entirely different vibe. There's suddenly no more mystery and the shift is so jarring that the film momentarily loses its ultra-captivating sense of awe. But, no matter, the viewer is soon engulfed in the social dynamics of the ape society.

The rough-hewn, alien-looking rock city sets are marvelous and the ape make-up is exceptional considering the time period. In fact, it holds up pretty well even to this day.

It is soon discovered that the apes have three distinct "races": The chimps are scientific, humanitarian and pacifistic; the gorillas are militaristic; and the orangutangs are the respected elders & religious leaders. The attention to detail of the ape society, and the social dynamics thereof, is nothing less than brilliant. The apes have their own distinctive walk and the actors do a spendid job depicting facial expressions through all that make-up, giving life to their characters.

The story's characters are distinctly fleshed-out and superbly performed by all involved: Nova, the animal-like cavegirl, played by the beautiful Linda Harrison. Zira (Kim Hunter) and Cornelius (Roddy McDowall), who are willing to risk everything for the sake of the truth and their ideals. Dr. Zaius (Maurice Evens), the defender of the apes' religious faith and protector of their society. Heck, even the secondary characters are great, like the chimp teenager Lucius and the gorilla jailguard Julius.

Although Dr. Zaius is portrayed as sort of a villain or antagonist, it's impossible to hate him. One ascertains that he only acts in the best interest of the apes. He's very learned and, although he doesn't know or believe everything about Taylor and humankind in general, he does know that humans were once the dominant species of the planet, ages ago, but they foolishly destroyed themselves and their great society. He knows very well that the apes have this same destructive potential so he does everything in his power to protect the community he knows and loves. Note how Cornelius and Zira regard Zaius with the utmost reverence and respect at all times, even when they are fugitives and Taylor has Zaius captive. This shows their humility and respectfulness. Also notice that, at the very end, right before Taylor and Nova depart down the shoreline on the horse, Zaius suddenly has it in his power (by way of the returning gorillas on horseback) to stop and even kill Taylor, but he DOESN'T. He lets them go. Why? I believe this reveals his good character and shows that he's not a villain at all. He knew Taylor could have easily killed him numerous times when he had the upper hand, so he mercifully returns the favor -- to an "animal" no less!

Also, consider this: Although Zaius is shown in a negative light by hindering scientific efforts to discover historical truth, the Lawgiver's scriptures that he quotes from are RIGHT -- humans ARE destructive & made a desert of parts of the planet and, for the sake of ape society, should not be allowed to "breed in great numbers." Zaius obviously feels that the apes, in general, can't handle the truth. ("You can't HANDLE the truth!!")

The climax is incredible: Taylor and Nova travel a LONG distance down the shoreline while the viewer hears eerie music on the soundtrack. Something's just not right; it's too quiet and uneventful. There's no way it's gonna end like this. And then, suddenly, the truth about the "planet of the apes" is revealed. Utterly dumbfounded, Taylor jumps off his horse and furiously pounds his fists into the surf while screaming out curses at humanity.

Lastly, the score by Jerry Goldsmith is PERFECT -- fittingly eerie and primal.

WHAT DOESN'T WORK: Sometimes the apes' mouths don't move enough when they speak and it clearly looks artificial. Also, there are a few corny elements of dialogue and the social commentary is occasionally tacky. I suppose the above "jarring shift" could also be viewed as a negative point.

FINAL ANALYSIS: I've seen "Planet of the Apes" numerous times over the years and previously saw it just two years ago. You would think that I'd "know it all" and nothing would surprise me, move me, teach me, etc. Yet, after just viewing it again, I am reminded of why this is such a great science-fiction film, even though it's forty years old. Some things I re-discovered but others I "saw" and experiecnced for the first time! Who woulda thought? I should also point out that "Planet of the Apes" is very adult-oriented (even though kids will, of course, appreciate many aspects of it). Although there is quite a bit of action, it is by no means an action flick. It's primarily a dialogue-driven sci-fi adventure. So those who need constant explosions to maintain their juvenile attention should steer clear (not that there's anything wrong with that -- heh, heh).

Lastly, this film and its sequel "Beneath the Planet of the Apes" (which is technically the only sequel in the series; the others are prequels) should be viewed as ONE long film/story. "Beneath" suffers from budget cuts, etc. but it is, in its own unique way, almost as good as "Planet."

5 out of 5 stars One of my favorite movies.......2007-08-04

I first saw this movie when I was a child. I loved it then and I still love it. I have watched it on all the superstations on DISH network many times. Now I have my own copy and will watch many more times.

5 out of 5 stars A CLASSIC! THE ORIGINAL STANDS ALONE!.......2007-08-01

I was lucky enough to see this at the movies when it was re-released with Beneath the Planet of the Apes 1970. It made a huge impact on me at the time and I must admit I still love it. The original is a fantastic film and it blows the remake completely out of the water! The sequels, well.......they are kind of stupid, but I can't help but like them any way! I grew up with them and when you're young you are willing to let little things go...like continuity, inane dialog and unbelievable and contrived story lines. The first film is in a class all by itself. The make-up is great for the time and I still think for the most part holds up today. The sets are cool and Roddy,Kim and the rest of the main apes play there parts to the hilt! Heston is Heston and he can make anything seems like it is real! The 2 disc set has a really nice transfer and a load of extras.

5 out of 5 stars The original 'Planet of the Apes'.......2007-06-28

As with most Rod Serling stories (he co-wrote this with Michael Wilson), a fundamental twist in the nature of things opens the door to pointed social commentary. The ruling apes exhibit the same fears, ignorance and prejudice as we civilized humans, only it stings a little more when you're on the wrong end of the whip. The film is gorgeously shot and briskly paced by director Schaffner, who'd go on to do "Patton". Kudos to 20th Century Fox on the quality of the restoration, as watching this pristine DVD felt like a whole new experience. Heston as the cynical Taylor makes an appealing hero, and Roddy McDowell and Kim Hunter excel as kindly chimp couple Cornelius and Zira. That "wow" surprise ending is justly famous. Avoid the Wahlberg re-make.

In this clever speculative tale, story collaborators Karl Alexander and Steve Hayes and screenwriter-director Nicholas Meyer (Star Trek II and VI) send two famous historical figures ahead in time. In late 19th century England, writer H.G. Wells (Malcolm McDowell) unwittingly includes Jack the Ripper (David Warner) in his social circle. When one of Wells's dinner parties is crashed by the police looking for the Ripper, Jack uses the author's time machine to escape. But there's one catch--after it has been used, the machine returns to Wells's time. Thus the literary genius bravely sets out to find his evil friend before he can wreak havoc on another time period, and soon arrives in modern-day San Francisco. What follows is a fascinating merger of a suspense thriller--as the charming and polite Wells tries to hunt down the shrewd, brutish Ripper and take him back to the past--and a love story, as Wells befriends and falls in love with a bank administrator (Mary Steenburgen) who acts as his guide through the future. Through its brilliant combination of creepy suspense and tender romance, Time After Time manages to become a classic in two genres at once--a rare cinematic achievement. --Bryan Reesman

Description

London 1893 is home to a killer with a macabre nickname... and also to a visionary genius who would write "The Time Machine." But what if H.G. Wells' invention wasn't fiction? And what if Jack the Ripper escaped capture fleeing his own time to take refuge in ours - with Wells himself in pursuit?

Interesting plot, pretty good movie. This was the first thing I have ordered from Amazon that was defective. I had no problem returning it for replacement. Very happy with Amazon and the DVD.

4 out of 5 stars Sorry, No Cindy Lauper On The Soundtrack.......2007-08-06

A long forgotten classic that deserves to be rediscovered. This is one you were likely to catch on HBO back in the day, but few people know of this film anymore. Tis a shame coz it's a very fun movie. H.G. Wells invents a time machine in the late 1800s and has to pursue Jack the Ripper who has escaped to the future, the future being 1979 in this case. Jack continues with his old antics while Wells tries to capture him and also tries to adjust to the 20th century(which wasn't at all what he thought it was going to be to his disappointment) and falls in love with Mary Steenburgen along the way. The movie's a bit hard to classify. Considering the premise, it's easy to just write it off as sci-fi, but that's not entirely true. The movie does become a love story a little ways in, but don't let that discourage all you manly men out there, because it actually works. The comedy, which consists of many fish-out-of-water moments with McDowell(Warner seems to adjust a little better and without much humor) discovering new things like electric toothbrushes and a McDonald's restaurant(which he refers to as "that Scottish restaurant I ate breakfast at"), are funny, cute and effective. Though Jack the Ripper is the movie's villain, this isn't a Jack the Ripper movie, if you catch my drift. There are no insights to Jack or his motivations; He's simply there, and he's a threat and he's a mean mother. Underrated character actor David Warner does a great job with the role. Mary Steenburgen is a real cutie. She'll never be considered a Hollywood sex kitten, but I've always found her to be a very attractive lady and a believable choice for Wells' character to fall for(and Dr. Emmett Brown for that matter!). That leaves Malcolm McDowell. A very fine performance from a guy who we're used to seeing play villains and psychos. Here he convincingly manages to be heroic, awkward, clumsy, and romantic. Hard to imagine he played Caligula the same year! The actual time travel sequence, one scene in a dance club, and a few minor odds and ends might have modern viewers chuckling, but other than that, this movie doesn't come across as dated as some have said or some may expect. It really holds up well. My only gripe about the film, and it's the same gripe I have about a couple of stories that deal with time travel, is that McDowell gets into the time machine in London and gets out in San Fransisco. Now, I'm no expert on time travel, but the idea is that you move through time, but not physically from the position where you left, right? To me, that was a little hard to buy, I would have preferred that it had taken place in London in 1979, that would have made more sense. Not only that, but if you're familiar with the H.G. Wells book, The Time Machine, that's the whole point! The character never moves from the spot in his lab where the time machine sits, it's everything around him that changes as time changes. Oh well, it's a minor gripe, but it's still a great movie. See it before Rob Zombie decides to remake it.

4 out of 5 stars Oedipus Wrecks, or the Perks of Asking Romy to Dance.......2007-04-19

Of all the bad ideas from the seventies getting cheeky revivals, why doesn't someone bother to givve a neat story like this one a decent remake? Malcolm McDowell plays Jack the Ripper, who steals H.G. Wells' time machine in order to escape the police. The machine returns sans Jack, and Wells travels into the future to capture him. He also manages to meet a nice girl who may want to settle down with him. Instead he opts to count his Ripper reward money in the Time Machine, leaving it running with the garage door closed while listening to Morrissey's cover of "A Hard Day's Night." Thumbs up, to infinity!

This film was directed by Brian DePalma.

5 out of 5 stars A blast from the past.......2007-01-28

Wow! What a great film! I remembered seeing it when I was very young. The movie was way ahead of it's time (no pun intended). The story was very original and the soundtrack, composed by the legendary Miklos Rosza, gives the film a classic feel. Although it may seem cheap by today's special effects standards, this film really delivers! Very enjoyable!

5 out of 5 stars Traveling in Time.......2007-01-12

What a GREAT movie! A new twist on the old classic! I'll be watching this one again & again!!
