The Goonies.......2007-09-04
I took a few of my grandchildren to this movie when it was first released. We all laughed and cried together and were amazed at the very good special effects. It also proved to be a GOOD moral story for teens of all ages out there right now. The young people do NOT have very much to choose from in the way of good movies, but I think this ONE deserves a special place in everyone's home for FAMILY MOVIE NIGHT! Enjoy..Jo
Best movie ever.......2007-08-23
I feel this is the best movie ever. I watch it all the time, its a great pick me up film and great on a rainy or snowy day. I wish the film company would release the extended version with the deleted scenes. This is a must buy for everyone.
Great 80's Nostalgic Movie.......2007-08-12
I still remember watching this in the theatres when it came out and getting this DVD brings those memories back alive. The story is about a group of middle class families and their kids who live near the boon docks of the city
but now the families homes face foreclosure. The kids who don't want to leave find a map hidden in one of the kids home attic to a pirates treasure hidden somewhere near the town and deciding to have at least on adventure or as they call it a last Goonie adventure to try and find the treasure.Along the way they will have a run in with an escaped family of criminals who have hidden out in the towns abandoned shack near the ocean and unfortunately the entrance to the pirates cave the Goonies need to get into. This is one of the great 80's movie I loved, grew up with, and still remember lovingly to this day for those who grew up in the 80's definitely
buy this and for those who are looking for a great family, funny, action adventure movie highly recommended...
Hear Ye Hear Ye.......2007-05-23

5 stars...baby!
Only difference is the case.......2007-05-10
This is not a new edition of the movie, the only difference is the case is a standard DVD case instead of the cardboard snap kind.

Amazon.com essential video
Hong Kong wuxia films, or martial arts fantasies, traditionally squeeze poor acting, slapstick humor, and silly story lines between elaborate fight scenes in which characters can literally fly. Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon has no shortage of breathtaking battles, but it also has the dramatic soul of a Greek tragedy and the sweep of an epic romance. This is the work of director Ang Lee, who fell in love with movies while watching wuxia films as a youngster and made Crouching Tiger as a tribute to the form. To elevate the genre above its B-movie roots and broaden its appeal, Lee did two important things. First, he assembled an all-star lineup of talent, joining the famous Asian actors Chow Yun-fat and Michelle Yeoh with the striking, charismatic newcomer Zhang Ziyi. Behind the scenes, Lee called upon cinematographer Peter Pau (The Killer, The Bride with White Hair) and legendary fight choreographer Yuen Wo-ping, best known outside Asia for his work on The Matrix. Second, in adapting the story from a Chinese pulp-fiction novel written by Wang Du Lu, Lee focused not on the pursuit of a legendary sword known as "The Green Destiny," but instead on the struggles of his female leads against social obligation. In his hands, the requisite fight scenes become another means of expressing the individual spirits of his characters and their conflicts with society and each other.
The filming required an immense effort from all involved. Chow and Yeoh had to learn to speak Mandarin, which Lee insisted on using instead of Cantonese to achieve a more classic, lyrical feel. The astonishing battles between Jen (Zhang) and Yu Shu Lien (Yeoh) on the rooftops and Jen and Li Mu Bai (Chow) atop the branches of bamboo trees required weeks of excruciating wire and harness work (which in turn required meticulous "digital wire removal"). But the result is a seamless blend of action, romance, and social commentary in a populist film that, like its young star Zhang, soars with balletic grace and dignity. --Eugene Wei
Description
An epic set against the breathtaking landscapes of ancient China, Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, combines the exhilarating martial arts choreography by Yuen Wo-Pind (The Matrix) with the sensitivity and classical storytelling of an Ang Lee film. The result is something truly unexpected: romantic, emotionally powerful entertainment.
Customer Reviews:
beautiful and gravity-defying.............2007-08-12
In all honesty, it is really hard for me to review the DVD version of CROUCHING TIGER, HIDDEN DRAGON because I believe this film is really one that you must see in the movie theater to experience the full effect of its marvelously directed splendor. Ang Lee [EAT DRINK MAN WOMAN, THE WEDDING BANQUET, SENSE AND SENSIBILITY] did a brilliant job with this modern day masterpiece. Inspired by the wuxia genre of Chinese film, we see beautiful action sequences, featuring "flying" actors and actresses [suspended from seemingly invisible wire], fighting scenes high in the canopies of trees, and even a love story. This is truly eye popping entertainment and features a wonderfully dynamic and charismatic cast (including Chow Yun Fat, Michelle Yeoh and Chang Cheng). CROUCHING TIGER, HIDDEN DRAGON began a tidal wave of wuxia style film releases in the United States--including THE HOUSE OF FLYING DAGGERS. For me, this was the best film of its kind and I am so glad that I saw it! I just hope that they re-release this film on the big screen, so, more people can come to appreciate the fine attention to detail and seamless direction that went into making it so extraordinary.
I don't remember much.......2007-07-12
I don't remember much but I remember thanking the person who recommended that I see this film and I loved the scene with the woman jumping from house to house. It was awesome.
Best Martial Arts Film Ever.......2007-06-22
Everything has already been said about this film, so I'll put only a short review here.
Why did I use the superlative in the title? Because it seems to be true for me. (The second place belongs to House of Flying Daggers [Region 99].) The story line is not very strong, but much better than you may see in this genre. The romantic threads do not make it too schmaltzy, and the visual design is simply excellent.
Disappointed..........2007-05-28
Although I enjoyed Michelle Yeoh and Zhang Ziyi (as always), I didn't enjoy this movie hardly at all. I couldn't believe this was the movie that got such rave reviews and was Oscar nominated etc. I don't say that foolishly, stating that I dislike the movie when really I dislike the genre. That's not it. I just much prefer films like "House of the Flying Daggers" and "Hero" to this one.
Not The Best Martial Arts Movie.......2007-04-05
the cinemotography is pretty good i this movie, but the plot was raw. This movie was okay.

The Ronald Reagan 1980s were all about going back to the future--rewriting the past to better suit Reagan's upbeat vision of the present. So, Sylvester Stallone's John Rambo (a psychotic, shell-shocked Vietnam vet in the original film, transformed into a flag-waving hero in the sequel) was able to go back to Southeast Asia and "correct" history by decisively (and single-handedly) winning that messy ol' war on behalf of America. Red Dawn is a paranoid cold-war cautionary tale that presents us not with a rosy alternative past, but with an ominous vision of the future, metaphorically plopping a piece of Russian-occupied Afghanistan into America's back yard. In this celebration of the Second Amendment, storm troopers from the Evil Empire descend upon the inadequately defended United States and hold America hostage. Stealthily avoiding the invaders, a motley group of red-blooded, small-town, gun-toting teenagers go underground to form the Wolverines, a guerilla resistance squad dedicated to making those Russkies rue the day they parachuted onto U.S. soil. It's a darn good thing those kids had the right to keep and bear arms, huh! Written and directed by macho filmmaker John Milius, the self-described "Zen fascist" who also cowrote Apocalypse Now, as well as the horrifying shark story Robert Shaw tells in Jaws. The cast includes Patrick Swayze, C. Thomas Howell, Lea Thompson, Jennifer Grey (a few years before she and Swayze took up Dirty Dancing), Charlie Sheen, Powers Boothe, Harry Dean Stanton, and Ben Johnson. Red Dawn was a commercial success, although audiences invariably split into two camps, finding it either patriotic or appalling. Whatever your verdict, the film remains a telling reflection of its era. --Jim Emerson
Description
Red Dawn opens with one of the most shocking scenes ever filmed; on a peaceful morning, through the windows of a high school classroom, students see paratroopers land on the varsity football field: the invasion of the United States has begun! As their town is overrun by foreign nationals, eight teenagers escape to the mountains. Taking the name of their high school football team, the Wolverines, they wage unremitting guerrilla warfare in defense of their parents, their friends and their country. Powerful, chilling and absolutely gripping, this outstanding film features some of today's most popular stars, including Patrick Swayze (Ghost), Charlie Sheen (Platoon), C. Thomas Howell (The Hitcher), Lea Thompson ("Caroline in the City"), Jennifer Grey (Dirty Dancing) and veteran actor Harry Dean Stanton (Alien). When it comes to thrilling entertainment, Red Dawn wins the war with a vengeance!
Customer Reviews:
The Russian are coming.......2007-08-31
Now it seems far fetched by the Soviets had the manpower and resources to carry out the attack that was portrayed in this movie. The movie is entertaining, plenty of action.
Corey Cotta, Author of All of Yesterdays Tomorrows
farce.......2007-08-23
This movie was moronic. The Red Army is no match for a small group of dim witted teenagers?!? Gimme a break! This movie was chock full of utter nonsense. It was not believable nor did it suspend my disbelief which is the fundamental rule in movie making. Instead it called attention to itself at every turn with conspicuous exposition, horrid acting, and bad dialogue. A screwball from the past like this will normally have some comedic value but this one did not. I give it 1.5 stars.
Loony and paranoid.......2007-08-21
A Russian leader told this to Reagan; "We have no plans whatsoever to invade the United States. While if our armies got there, we could certainly take over major cities quickly, we'd face unending opposition to this move for generations. And, why should we do it? Communism, if it comes to America, must be from within, we can't force it. On the other hand, we are afraid of America trying this on Russia. Simply put, a small army taking over Moscow could do the trick. Like a virus taking over a cell. Orders would come from central and that would be that."
America under attack.......2007-08-04
Great little movie , it was though the writer ,producer and director had looked in to the future forseeing the destruction of the country.
Foreign troops russian and cubans oppressing, killing our people , fathers mothers children and atomic war destoring our cities. Yet a small band of untrained youth take up the action and fight back , all the young actors played great parts , Patrick Swayze , charlie sheen a strong brother connection of leadership , C F Howell Lea Thompson and Jennifer Grey adapting thru fear tears to become strong willing to give their lives for freedom. Made in 1984 , Los Vegas New Mexico , everyone should see it and consider its message that was openly displayed by the writer ,Valkyrie and Sidney Beckman Know how to stirr your emotions and leave with WHAT IF !!!!!!!!!

Foreign "liberals" invade America.......2007-07-31
I don't own the new collectors' edition but do the older dvd release, and hope someone posts their opinions if they think the video has been remastered or cleaned up or if it looks the same as the older dvd, even thought the older one is fairly good, don't get me wrong, just obvious taken off theater film reel too much.
That said, the movie is an excellent portrayal of American Values, of which don't stand for hating America in the standard liberal practice of modern times, but instead of self reliance and sacrifice.
The Amazon.com editorial author is definitely a modern day card carrying liberal democrat party member too stuck on the premises of all the hunting rifles first picked up in the opening scenes is all I can figure, of which present day liberals are the type to try to denegrate this film just because their are some scenes in it of guns in gun stores, youth who know how to use guns from hunting, and of course the old west pistol Patrick Swayze had, all reasons to strangely portray this film for some reason a conservative Republican Party flick strangely and not a what-if invasion flick, read "it is a what-if invasion flick", not a "pro second amendment flick", and anyone who claims it is some sort of pro gun flick, well, they didn't really watch it and I have noticed some errors of many of the detractors, as if they have not watched it "thoroughly and with eyes open and ears listening", a regular practice of those who are trying rather hard to form a certain learned opinion to gain something to gripe about.
These days a remake should have a story line of liberal democrats take over America politically as a majority for 12 to 16 years, eliminate the national defense budget to zero or to just enough to go after gun owning and free thinking Americans(not liberal thinking), and then invite the Russians or Chinese military over here to help kick in gun owners and non liberal household doors but then the Russians and/or the Chinese decide to stay and invade totally thinking this country was so liberal it could be a real push over, and groups of ill informed liberal youths escape to the hills, who have never touched or seen guns can make a nice story line learning how to shoot captured weapons(like asking each other what comes out of gun barrels, bullets or three wishes if you rub the barrel twice)once they are running for their lives, family members killed, and of course raped like in this movie. I guess the mayor figure of this movie in that remake could be Bill Clinton or Hillary Clinton figures who can be for instance governors or senators who were initially there as friends of the invaders in the almighty quest against gun ownership. As for the Cuban and Nicaraguan armies invading from the south, they won't need that in the remake since we are being invaded already by scores of illegal aliens already here, so in the remake the Russians and Chinese will be arming them so they can make a special deal(to call this whole country New Mexico) to run America for the Russians and Chinese as an independent illegal alien based state with liberal democrat communist sympathyzeers as the mayor figures, haha, who knows, that is likely what looks like will really happen in 20 years anyway or could happen, so it won't be so unbelievable, and they can have Sean Penn play Billy Clinton, and Rosy O'Donnel can play something liberal democrat commy ally or something, and that would satisfy even the modern liberal crowd, with an ending they would like where the Russians and Chinese leave once they decide its too costly to be invaders when all the former illegal aliens start working as replacement soldiers at 1/4th the pay of the invaders, thus demoralizing the invading regular soldiers, haha. And the liberals will cheer when all the guns in the closing scene are piled up and burned now that the invasion and war is over and all the freedom fighters are arrested and reprogrammed to understand that guns and self defence are not excuses to even fight a foreign invader, and the liberals could then explain the former invasion by stating in the usual manner that we all need to "understand" the former invaders, about why they did it, haha, it would ring so familar with everything we all keep on hearing about needing to "understand" the current terrorists from the liberal crowd.
Ya know, I could have been a big time liberal hollywood director what with my liberal minded remake ideas.

These four classic, 1938 black-and-white Nancy Drew hour-long films directed by William Clemens (not the 2007 movie starring Emma Roberts) feature Bonita Granville as Nancy Drew, John Litel as Carson Drew, and Frankie Thomas as Ted Nickerson. Based on the character from the book series first published in 1930, the headstrong teenager Nancy Drew has a knack for winding up right in the middle of a mystery, and neither her father nor friend Ted can talk Nancy into doing what they consider the sensible thing: letting the police handle the detective work. With a curious mix of early feminism and cultural chauvinism, a dichotomy representative of late-1930s society, Nancy investigates each mystery with fervor, usually dragging her friend Ted into the thick of the investigation and demonstrating a complete disregard for her personal safety or the safety of her friends and family in her determination to track down the perpetrator. Sharp-witted and quick to pick up on the smallest, seemingly insignificant details, Nancy often succeeds where the local Police Captain Tweedy (Frank Orth) fails. Nancy Drew, Detective presents the story of an elderly benefactress unscrupulously detained at a sanatorium, while Reporter and Trouble Shooter are murder mysteries, and Hidden Staircase deals with a combined murder and attempt to dupe two elderly women. While somewhat ponderously paced by modern standards, these original Nancy Drew adventures are quality suspense mysteries that deserve their classic designation. (Ages 10 and older) --Tami Horiuchi
Customer Reviews:
Bigger than the parts she got.......2007-08-31
I think Bonita Granville was a beauty and had comsdy talent. A big studio should have grabbed her up and made her a super star.
A sweet collection of Old Hollywood-style Nancy Drews.......2007-08-30
If the Harry Potter books are the most popular books of this generation, then the Nancy Drew books were the hits of the 1930s. Remarkably, how every decade since then, both girls and boys have rediscovered Nancy Drew and made her adventures their own. This is how you can tell the true classics apart from the pretenders.
Like most of the `80s kids, I had never realized that the escapades of my favorite childhood heroine had ever been made into movies. It took a badly done remake in 2007 for somebody to realize that money could be made from the generations of fans who have adored the real Nancy Drew; and so these four films were released on DVD as part of a cross-promotional marketing tactic. Well lucky for us, anyhow!
Starting with Nancy Drew, Detective and progressing to the Hidden Staircase, we get four fun mysteries. Detective introduces Nancy and shows how she got started sleuthing when a wealthy elderly woman disappears mysteriously. Reporter is about Nancy and Ted's investigation into a murder, which kicks off when Nancy is convinced that the accused woman is innocent. Troubleshooter follows Nancy and her dad to a vacation at Sylvan Lake where they uncover clues to exonerate a family friend who has been charged with the murder of a local businessman. Hidden Staircase is the most exciting mystery, in which Nancy and Ted find an underground tunnel in the basement of a "haunted" mansion. I regret that I no longer have a sharp memory for the specifics of the books' plots, so I cannot compare them to these movies with any accuracy, but their spirit is well kept as I remember them.
*This* is the Nancy Drew I remembered from those books read so long ago: feisty, charismatic, energetic and unstoppable. Bonita Granville's Nancy is also impossibly cute, which is very much in keeping with the style of those times. The actor who played Ted Nickerson is the perfect sidekick, reluctant with just a touch of teenage dorkiness. I enjoyed their performance, if it was a bit over-the-top acting by today's standards.
In my opinion, this Nancy Drew DVD would be enjoyed most by people who have read the books and who like nostalgic black and white films. It's certainly a wholesome and perhaps somewhat corny look back at the 1930s ideal of an independent, intelligent young lady.

Classic Nancy Drew movies big hit.......2007-08-09
The classic Nancy Drew movies are top notch. We have been having Nancy Drew Movie days with the ladies. They are also children appropriate. We like the age of the character - she is able to be independent but still care what her father thinks. Ted is a good character also. I have really enjoyed the movies.
Delightful Family Fare.......2007-07-28
Good family entertainment. Bonita Granville is cute and funny. I recommend this for any family or person who desires an alternative to the junk coming out of Hollywood and TV today.
Nancy Drew.......2007-07-23
I am shocked at how good these movies are and wondering where they have been hiding as this is the first time that I have ever seen them. They are the best Nancy Drew ever.

Anne Frank: The Whole Story delivers exactly what it promises: the incredibly moving complete story of Anne Frank, going beyond what the Jewish teenage girl wrote in her widely read diary. Anne, along with her family and friends of her family, hid in a secret annex behind her father's office in Amsterdam during the Nazi occupation of Holland. She dutifully kept a diary, which became a worldwide bestseller when her father published it in the 1950s. The story has been adapted for television and movies before, but this version, which played on ABC television, moves beyond what Anne wrote, meeting up with the Frank family before Anne receives her diary, and following her past the diary's last entries into Auschwitz and Birkenau. Hannah Taylor Gordon is a superb Anne, bringing to life the multifaceted girl, in turns intelligent, dreamy, creative, spoiled, and bratty, a girl like any other except that Anne is a Jew in Nazi-occupied Holland. The only one who outshines Gordon is Ben Kingsley as Anne's father, Otto Frank. His quiet performance is extraordinarily powerful; as he watches his family slip away, it is impossible not to feel his grief. This brave film is difficult in parts to watch--the concentration camp scenes are brutal--but this is a remarkable adaptation of Anne's life, and it is a film to be shared and discussed and remembered. --Jenny Brown
Description
Ben Kingsley, Brenda Blethyn, and Hannah Taylor Gordon star in the stirring tale of one of the most influential young women of the 20th century. Based on Melissa Muller's critically acclaimed book, ANNE FRANK goes beyond the story you already know and paints the true portrait of Anne both before and after she went into hiding. Get to know the high-spirited and popular girl before the war, and experience the challenges of the brave people who risked their lives trying to keep her safe. ANNE FRANK also explores the enduring mystery of who betrayed the Frank family and reveals what happened next.

Subtitles Please.......2007-09-05
This would be an excellent movie for classroom use if it were subtitled in English and/or Spanish. It's worth whatever it costs to subtitle, PLEASE make these movies available with subtitles. ESL students in the states and students in other countries cannot use this movie as it is.
ANNE FRANK.......2007-08-31
Unfortunattely , I couldn't watch this movie on account of the
ZONE NUMBER . Funny that I have many movies from the USA , and can
see all of them without any problemn.
This movie is great.......2007-08-01
At first i was skeptical about this movie because i was never interested in Anne Frank, but i bought this dvd for my sister and she and I loved it!! I reccommend this movie to anyone who like heartbreaking stories. By the way, this movie is extremely long, just over 3 hours long.
Education Review.......2007-06-27
I used this movie for my 8th grade class and they loved it. The only problem is that you have to manually edit it as there is a nudity scene as they are in the concentration camp. This movie gives a new perspective to the students of Anne Frank after they have read her diary. I thought it was a great movie.

In this inspiring true story of Holocaust survivor Corrie ten Boom, a family joins the underground resistance. But when they themselves are arrested and imprisoned in concentration camps, they realize the importance of their own faith.
Customer Reviews:
Heart-wrenching, yet inspirational.......2007-08-07
This movie shows the faith of a family of Christians, who were transformed from ordinary citizens: an elderly watchmaker and two middle-aged spinsters, to courageous heroes. Corrie Ten Boom, her father, and her sister were law-abiding Christians before Hitler took over the Netherlands. As the horrors of the Nazi occupation mounted, the family made a moral choice to follow God's laws and to protect and hide the Jews that were being rounded up. Living by faith, and depending on God's protection, they were able to save the lives of the Jewish people hiding in their home, even though they were betrayed by a Dutch informer and imprisoned. What follows is a nightmare where the family is separated and then the two sisters are sent to a Nazi concentration camp. Without giving away too much of the story, we see that God's hand is upholding them even throughout the worst miseries. Corrie's sister Betsie is very frail physically, but a giant in faith. She helps Corrie by encouraging her and giving her spiritual strength, while Corrie helps her sister to endure the harsh camp surroundings. Both are indeed "set free" before the New Year's, and Corrie carries her family's legacies on to tell the world that there is no pit so deep that God's hand is not there to uphold you (Betsie's quote that keeps Corrie going).
Watch the movie, read the book. You will be enriched and encouraged what God can do through those who live by faith.
The Hiding Place.......2007-07-25
As the movie account of a Dutch family's story during the Second World war, it is a faithful rendition of the book by the same name. At a time when people in occupied countries were trying to survive the Nazi regime, the Ten Booms' decided to put their own lives at risk to save others. The family worked cooperatively to rescue many Jews from certain death, hiding them behind a false wall in their home. Eventually, they were betrayed by an informer and hauled of to a concentration camp where most of the family are gassed to death. The story focuses on the Christian faith of the family; the driving force for putting their lives on the line to save the Apple of God's Eye, the Jews. This faith is tested to the point of death and Corrie, the elder sister of Betsy, starts to waver in her belief in a loving God. Corrie witnesses terrible attrocities which she has difficulty reconciling with the love of God. Betsy on the other hand is unwavering, choosing to see the positives in life at the camp. She believes that even in such a dreadful place, and suffering along with everyone else, God still loves each person there; including the Nazis. Betsy's focus is on forgiveness and before she dies from an illness in the camp, she asks Corrie to spread the good news when she leaves Auschwitz that "there is no pit so deep that He is not deeper still". This is an inspiring story of a true faith that does not expect or demand an easy road to heaven for oneself, while others on earth suffer with no hope.
The best feel good book ever........2007-04-06
Hard to put this book down. It has to make you a better person just for reading it. She must have a special place in heaven.
A true saga of "loving your neighbor as thyself" .......2007-03-13
The Hiding Place
A true saga of "loving your neighbor as thyself"
[146 minutes - genre: reality and drama]
In a manuscript from the 1st century AD one reads
<
< "You have heard that it was said `An eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth.'" But I say to you Do not resist an evildoer. But if anyone strikes you on the right cheek, turn the other also ..." "You have heard that it was said, `You shall love your neighbor and hate your enemy.' But I say to you, Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you, so that you may be children of your Father in heaven...">> [words of Jesus, gospel manuscript according to Matthew]
"The Hiding Place, is one of the most extraordinary true stories to come out of World War II. Filmed in Holland and other authentic European locations, the film traces the lives of Corrie ten Boom, her father, and sister Betsie, from the quiet years before WWII, to their work with the `under-ground' in helping to save the lives of countless Jewish families. The ultimate price they pay for their efforts is arrest and imprisonment in one of Nazi Germany's most dreaded concentration camps. In the midst of monstrous cruelty and suffering, Corrie and Betsie must face the greatest test of their faith in God and their ability to love mankind." [DVD jacket description]
Los Angeles Times calls it "It is that rarest of rarities, a film of shining, triumphant spirituality."
The acting was flawless, the cinematography could not be more authentic [accurate details of life in a `work-camp'], but what shined above all else was the testimony of faith and courage of this Christian Dutch family. Their morals and religious ethics came first, not only in times of freedom, or Nazi occupation, but also in times of despair living in sub-human conditions of the Nazi `lager' [concentration camp].
The end is as dramatic as the rest of the story itself -
"Years later it was learned my release came through a clerical error. ... Some questions remain, but they are not to be feared. Out heavenly Father holds all things in His hands. Even our questions. ... No pit is so deep, that He is not deeper still. With Jesus even in our darkest moments, the best remains, and the very best is yet to be. ... I promised my sister - I would tell it - and I tell you."
What a beautiful testimony of living as a child of God and loving one's neighbor and also one's enemies.
engaging movie.......2007-01-19
Nice movie on the topic, particularly for Christians,
(good choice of movies at Easter time).
Description
Jackie (Katie Dickie) works at a video-surveillance firm that is in charge of protecting people who live on a single block of Red Road in urban Glasgow. When she sees an ex-con (Tony Curran) from her past appear on her monitor, she is compelled to confront him for his crimes and begins to stalk him. What mysterious history do they share, and why is Jackie so determined to punish this man? Filmmaker Andrea Arnold keeps the audience guessing and the tension building as Red Road crescendos to an explosive finale.
Customer Reviews:
Sterling debuts all around.......2007-09-03
This is a first film by the director, Andrea Arnold, and the lead, Kate Dickie, and the first of an intended series by a group of Scottish film makers to be set around the same group of characters. I have no idea where it will go from here, but this film presents a complete picture, a circle of tragedy that closes.
This is the type of film where a story starts in the middle and progresses without any setup exposition, you have to figure out on your own where it's going. Sometimes films like this drive me crazy, but it works in spades here, particularly during a stunning sexual encounter where all you can think is, what the heck is this woman doing? Why is she letting this happen? There could be more than one answer, it could just be lonely lust, that possibility exists, and then . . . well, the answer is revealed, and while it was hinted at, there is no way to anticipate what happens, nor how it all turns out.
If you love film, you must see this, and support these individuals. Their instincts for what appears on the screen are spot on, and I look forward to their next effort. Two small warnings; the sex is graphic, and the Glasgow accents pretty thick, English subtitles are not necessarily out of place.

Kids will love this sweeping story of two brothers whose plane crashes on a mysterious island called Dinotopia, where human beings live in harmony with dinosaurs--the herbivores, anyway. The carnivores present a problem, as the humans' defenses against them--a mystical power source called sunstones--are losing strength. As they try to save the island, Carl and David (Tyron Leitso and Wentworth Miller) struggle not only with tyrannosaurs and prehistoric crocodiles, but also with repressive Dinotopian traditions and a scheming malcontent (David Thewlis) who stirs up all kinds of trouble. Meanwhile, they also wrestle with each other over the lovely daughter of the mayor of Waterfall City (Katie Carr). The pacifist ideals of Dinotopia are refreshing, but it's the special effects that will hook viewers: riding on the backs of brachiosaurs, flying atop pteranadons, arguing in court with triceratops and ankylosaurs--anyone fascinated with dinosaurs (and who isn't?) will enjoy this whimsical fantasy. A host of British character actors also helps keep the human side of this four-hour miniseries lively; Alice Krige (also known as the Borg Queen in Star Trek: The Next Generation) gets a much more benevolent role here. --Bret Fetzer
Customer Reviews:
4 Hours of this?!.......2007-08-14
4 hours of sheer stupidity, poorly told, totally ridiculous fantasy. Watch something else, believe me!
Fabulous graphics, refreshing scenes with min violence, cute love story & entertaining!.......2007-06-25
I never read the Dinotopia books as a child so watching this movie was a real treat! I did not have any book storylines to make comparison while watching it so I just went along for the ride and watched all three series on Sci Fi channel one night. The two brothers, David & Tyron, (Wentworth Miller and Carl Scott in real life) had a love & hate or typical rivalry many brothers go through, especially "half-brothers" and it could teach some lessons to kids that "love defeats everything". When their father's plane crashed and they ended in an uncharted island, the adventure begins. Naturally, the two were in awe of the place where dinosaurs and humans live in harmony. Humans are descendants of those who also ended up in the island but could not go back to their former homes. The brothers became infatuated with the same girl, Marion (Katie Carr, the Waterfall City's daughter who studied Dinasaurs since her childhood. She loves nature and animals so Tyron and David learned many things from her about Dinotopia. There is also an intelligent/professor dinosaur named Zippo who helped the two brothers save the island. Of course, there is a villain who's main goal is to get out of the island so just watch for him.
As the movie progress, David, an introvert, became a pilot flying on skybacks in a place that resembled The Grand Canyon while the extrovert David had to learn patience through nursing a baby dinasaur. I puchased the DVD set so my toddler can watch it and enjoy the story when he's old enough to understand the plots... This is a great family movie despite the negative reviews others have posted. Don't let that deter from watching it because it is a treat for those who appreciate good movies other than sex and violence which you won't find here! The graphics especially of Waterfall City was just fab! Need not to mention Prison Break star Wentworth Miller starred here as one of his first major roles.
Dinorific!.......2007-06-08
Along with my kids (ranging in age from 5-17), I thoroughly enjoyed this movie. The graphics are excellent and the storyline kept us all glued to the television. Violence is at a minimum and there is no swearing or nudity. Clean family enjoyment.
Dinosaurs.......2007-04-17
I bought this DVD for my boys ages 4 and 7. They absolutely love this movie. Since it is a mini series they never actually get through watching the whole thing but they do like what they end up seeing. The story is, of course, completely unrealistic but what isn't these days? The acting is just OK and the story is a little over my younger ones head but there are dinosaurs...and that's all that really matters.. It is worth it if your kids like anything having to do with prehistoric creatures.
Boringtopia.......2007-04-12
I'm not even sure why ABC thinks they can get away with naming their movies after books. They aren't usually very inspired about following the books or they do a bad job getting actors, set makers, and CGI artists. The vast majority of their movies I have seen were boring. So unless you really are bored or you just want background for something else you are doing I can't recommend this movie. I hadn't read the book, but I knew enough about them to know this movie did a poor job trying to emulate it. Not only that I approached this with an open mind, but about a half hour in I knew this was a stinker. Small children may be slightly entertained but I doubt it as the two boys fight all the time and do really stupid things.

You may be surprised to discover that the director of the Lethal Weapon movies and scary horror flick The Omen, Richard Donner, also produced and directed this classic children's adventure (which, by the way, was written by Donner's screen-wizard friend Steven Spielberg). Then again you may not. The Goonies, like Donner's other movies, is the same story of good versus evil. It has its share of bad guys (the Fratelli brothers and their villainous mother), reluctant-hero good guys (the Walsh bothers and their gang of friends), and lots of corny one-liners. Like in an old-fashioned Hardy Boys or Nancy Drew plot, the Goonies need to solve a problem: a corrupt corporate developer has bought out their neighborhood and plans to flatten all their homes. Luckily, the beloved gang stumbles on a treasure map. In the hopes of finding the treasure to buy back their houses, the Goonies embark on their quest through underground passages, aboard pirate ships, and behind waterfalls. This swashbuckling and rollicking ride was also a great breeding ground for a couple of child actors who went on to enjoy numerous successes in adulthood: Sean Astin (Rudy, Encino Man) and Martha Plimpton (Pecker, 200 Cigarettes). --Samantha Allen Storey
Description
Following a mysterious treasure map into a spectacular underground realm of twisting passages, outrageous booby-traps and a long-lost pirate ship full of golden dubloons, the kids race to stay one step ahead of a family of bumbling bad guys... and a mild-mannered monster with a face only a mother could love.

grown kids love this movie, so do young kids.......2007-08-27
My kids loved this movie when they were children, and now they love it all over again. I was going to save this movie for a stocking stuffer but they found out and wanted to see it right now. So I gave in. They all sat with popcorn and raved about how good it was. Thanks for bring us all together. My kids are 17,19,21.25,27. Even I watched it. Then my little great nephew came over he loved it too.
How is it possible for a movie to be this good?.......2007-08-21
The Goonies is a classic 80s movie that is a part of many people's childhood. I have seen the movie over 200 times since I was around 7 years old (and I'm 26 now). This movie is in my top 5 of all times. Cyndi Lauper's "Goonies R Good Enough" song makes the movie even better.
The main character, Mikey (Sean Austin), was also Sam in Lord of the Rings but I always think of him as Mikey from Goonies. And Short Round from Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom makes an appearance as "Data".
Astoria is a great place to visit! You can even go see the Goonies house in person among the other places in the movie shot in Astoria. I haven't been since I was younger but I plan to visit Astoria again and go to all of the major places from the movie.
I seriously doubt any new movies will ever stand up to the quality and timelessness of this movie. If you haven't seen it, buy it RIGHT NOW and get next day delivery
id give it 2000 stars if i could.......2007-08-10
what can i say... this is my favorite movie from my child hood. the story is about some oregon kids who find a treasure map and go after the rich stuff to save thier houses from being destroyed by rich pricks. bottom line is that this is a amazingly fun adventure. ive played this so many times in my dvd player that i had to buy a new one! HEY YOU GUYS!!!!!!!!
BTW there is a short novelization of this movie for sale here on amazon which is totally worth buying and reading.
Awesome movie.......2007-07-13
Seller provided competitive pricing, and accurate description. Arrived in timely manner, and in good condition.
what a magical, wonderous joyride.......2007-07-07
you gotta be a goon times 25 if you didnt immediately fall in love with Goonies, at any age. But how wonderful it was for those of us in the pre teen years, who saw this when it first came out. How magical the ride was.
I mean Speilberg, Donner and Chris Columbus. I mean the cream of the incessant crop.
"Goonies" is quintessential Speilberg. When a film, not in the era of CGI, and computer animated everything, can just grip you with an amazing score, a slew of talented kids, and a storyline that is gripping, flowing and totally fun, you feel so great about yourself over and over again. I can be down in the dumps to the extreme, and throw Goonies in, and it takes my through a rough day with smiles and enticing childlike splendor.
How many of us wanted to be part of that group? How many of us dreamt, in those wee hours, before slept crept in, when we saw Goonies for the first time, or the 90th time, and dreamt such amazing things: to find hidden treasure, to climb down wells and discover hidden caves, to dig through canals and taverns in our backyards and find our own One Eyed Willie, eye mattey, ehhhhhh, yes, the magic of the Gonnies so transformed my youth and brought me to that magical place of make believe, which only the brilliance of Speilberg can do producing. Pirates of the Carribean doesn't touch Goonies for sentimentality or the like.
I will never forget seeing this when I was 9 or 10 or so, and getting all red with my mother when they kiss in the dark. I was learning about life then, and Goonies certainly helped me realize the wonderous things I was to look forward to.
Not to mention that the character actress Anne Ramsey is impeccably sinister and perfect in her role as Mom Fratelli.
One of my favorite films in the world as a child, and totally up there even by today's standards.
Chunk, Baby Ruth, Rocky Road, and the hilarious performance by Corey Feldman.
Thank you.

Product Description
When Eliza's father-in-law dies suddenly during the Depression, she is left with two young children, an unharvested orange crop on a heavily mortgaged farm, and no money. Bible-quoting Aunt Batty urges her to have faith. Gabe Harper, a wandering veteran with wonderful manners and an air of mystery, is willing to help with the harvest, but the mortgage payment is due in less than 30 days. As the family fights to complete the harvest in time to make the mortgage payment, Eliza and Aunt Batty discover that Gabe is a writer, and Gabe and Eliza fall in love.
Customer Reviews:
A good Depression Era tale.......2007-08-09
This is a Depression era story about a young widow, Eliza (Sydney Penny) who is left to raise two children and meet a harvest deadline from her orange grove. With a mortgage debt coming due she has the impossible task of picking enough oranges to meet the note. She is befriended by Aunt Batty (Shirley Jones),the local sheriff, and a wandering WW1 veteran, Gabe (Jason Gedrick) Elixa is leery of him at first because he is a hobo and is scruffy looking. He proves to be a good hand and a hard worker. Eliza secretly reads Gabe's diary and becomes interested in him. In the final showdown to get the harvest in on time, Gage enlists a gang of fellow hobos to help.
hidden places.......2007-03-17
Hidden places has to be one of the best movies I have seen in a long time. It is so good to watch a movie that has no bad language or violence or bad morals in it, and still has a story line that keeps you interested all the way through from the beginning to the end. This is a story of hardluck to romance, and I loved every minute.
Hidden Places.......2007-03-03
There is nothing objectionable in this movie so the whole family can enjoy watching it together, but after watching it through just once, I've got it basically memorized. The book may have more depth and emotion -- I don't know because I haven't read it, or anything else by Lynn Austin. The plot of this movie, at any rate, is so simple that a child could have come up with it. No offence to fans of the movie; I'm just the kind of person who doesn't get captivated by a movie unless there's a lot of sweep and drama. I didn't cry or sit on the edge of my seat, I just sat back and enjoyed. It's an OK movie, but I wouldn't reccomend buying it unless you've rented it first, and are sure you'd like to watch it again. The acting was mediocre, the whole story-line was very predictable, and the plot had some holes. For example: there is a part near the end where Eliza goes to Gabes room one morning and finds he is gone . . . just when they need him the most. Sure he won't be coming back, she is broken-hearted. The next morning he has come back with a band of hobos willing to pick a harvest of oranges in exchange for a filling breakfast, and Eliza is overjoyed that Gabe didn't walk out on her after all. But I already guessed he went for help of some kind. My question is: Why didn't he leave a note? Kindof weird. I know they meant for him disapearing to add suspense, but all it did for me was suspend my belief. So, three stars. Nothing bad, and nothing spectacular.
Hidden Places .......2007-02-12
For those who are wondering why the PG rating for this movie, well, I'm wondering too. This is one of the cleanest movies I've ever seen. Not one utterence of foul language. Not one utterence of d***, h***, or any irreverence of the use of the word God. Just a clean, clean movie from beginning to end.
The only scene that I could think of that would draw a PG rating is when the grandfather died and they had a funeral. Everything connected to this was brief and something I would not object to my children watching. If there's anything else, I missed it, and I watched this movie intently from beginning to end.
For those who are looking for a true family-friendly movie, this is it. No foul language, no violence, no sexual innuendo. Nothing that any member of the family could not watch.
Kleenex will be needed though.
Fabulous.......2007-01-16
