Description

Something bizarre has happened abourd flight #29...a nightmare so chilling, so frightening, so unrelenting it could only come from the mind of Stephen King. Now the master storyteller of our time gives terror a new name in THE LANGOLIERS. A jet leaves on a red-eye flight from Los Angeles to Boston. But early in the flight, ten passengers awaken to a startling realization: All of the other passengers have vanished - and the ground below is only...ground. But once they manage to land the plane, the situation doesn't improve. No one is there...the air is still...the clocks have stopped...and a dread, evil presence bent on their destruction is headed straight for them. Based on the novella from the best-selling anthology Four Past Midnight, Patricia Wettig (City Slickers II), Bronson Pincho (Beverly Hills Cop), Dean Stockwell (The Player), and David Morse (The Getaway) stare into the jaws of oblivion in this nightmare from the mind of Stephen King.

4 out of 5 stars Creepy..........2007-07-12

The story isn't all that original, really - a plane full of passengers trapped between time and space and seemingly no way back. It was done on the Twilight Zone for certain, and in fact this story had all the mysterious anxiety of a Twilight Zone story, or even something that might have appeared on "Doctor Who". It holds you from start to finish, as most King stories do.

I do have a few minor complaints, though. Like the old classic "Curse of the Demon", this film would have been much more effective if we never actually saw the langoliers (who reminded me of the animated scrub brushes in cleansing powder commercials), but left us to wonder whether or not they were part of Toomey's imagination. I have never read the book, but it seemed to me that Toomey should have been a more sympathetic character, and why-oh-why did the Irishmen-pretending-to-be-an-Englishman come across sounding like an Australian? I was also bothered by the fact that these people were returned to the Present, but no inquiries were made as to the whereabouts of all those missing passengers, not to mention the dead girl in the plane. After all, they were an unscheduled flight that came in from nowhere, and hardly anyoine seemed to notice.

But that's the nature of fantasy, horror, and fairy tales. Maybe they don't have to make sense.

1 out of 5 stars Are you ready for some fun? here we go:.......2007-06-06

1. Buy it used, for the .80 cents its worth.
2. Get some old family members together, preferably distant cousins and some nasty in-laws.
3. Find a torch, a nail gun and perhaps an ignitor
4. Perform operation in a safe place, away from trees or animals
5. Take DVD, still unopened from packaging, ie. either mailing bubble or shrink wrap, and light up the sky. (ritual must be performed at night to get full affect)

It is too bad, had some really talented actors in it. It was painful to watch this. I am sorry some talent will take any work, just to be on screen. This was appalling.

5 out of 5 stars I was once obsessed with this movie.......2007-02-18

The Langoliers is probably the most interesting movie I've ever seen. I've seen TONS of movies. Suspense, drama, horror, comedy, family films, you name it. But the Langoliers is probably one of my very favorite films.

When this film first came out in the mid 90's, I was addicted to it. I would go over to my aunt's house every weekend and watch it. What made it so addicting to me, you wonder? I've always had an obsession with the thought of wondering if somewhere in the universe a world EXACTLY like this one existed. BUT, if there was a way we could somehow arrive to that mirror world, would EVERYTHING be exactly the same? Wouldn't some things be different? Wouldn't it be fun to figure out the things that make that world different from the one we've lived on for years?

The Langoliers is almost like that game where someone shows you two almost-identical pictures and you have to find the one minor thing that makes them different from each other. That's a good way of explaining the point of this film. To me, this is something EXTREMELY fascinating. Imagine if I could somehow travel to another world exactly like Earth where all the continents and oceans are located in the same exact place, and arrive to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Something about the city isn't quite right. What's wrong?

Let's say, just like in the film, as I go around exploring the city in my attempt to figure out the difference between this abandoned and unsettling Philadelphia compared to the Philadelphia I grew up in, I keep hearing strange sounds in the background, and I have no idea what it is. Wouldn't that be scary? The sounds continue nonstop, and they get louder and louder as *something* gets closer and closer. I have to hurry up and find a way out of there, because it dawns on me that this Philadelphia is actually a nightmare version of the real thing. It turns out nobody lives in this nightmare Philadelphia, even though all the buildings and bridges are still standing exactly like they were in the real world. But what's going on?

In the case of the movie, everything takes place at an airport. Nobody is around, and the main characters continue to hear strange sounds in the background as they try to discover what's wrong. This is some really good stuff to me, and that's why I gave the movie a perfect rating.

3 out of 5 stars Wonderfully unique premise, but bad execution.......2007-01-18

I basically agree with all those who have stated that the acting is generally substandard, the ending is the epitome of cheesiness (especially the wimpy jump for joy at the very end)and the fx leave much to be desired. But a couple points that I noticed that have yet to be covered. First, how come the langoliers don't devour the plane? They have plenty of opportunities, and even when the plane is in the air they seem more than capable of catching up with it and out-manuevering it. Shouldn't they have immediately gone after it after the last piece of land disappears into the void? Second, although the langoliers themselves were extremely cheesy, I would still prefer a world full of them and devoid of suicide inducing people as seen when they finally make it back to the present. Also, if they're in the future when they land at LAX, then how come all the buildings and trees and other objects are present (besides the people of course)when the "world is waiting to be born?" Shouldn't they be standing in a blackened void if everything has yet to exist? Perhaps a better way of visualizing the transfer of future time to present time should've been to have the langoliers throwing up objects instead of eating them. LOL After all, everything that exists could've been the wretched vomit of some hideous creatures. Lovely, eh?

4 out of 5 stars Nicely Done..........2006-12-28

The standout of King's Four Past Midnight was the Twilight Zone-esque, The Langoliers, a very good entry into the time-twister category in an otherwise uneven collection of four King novellas. Given the mixed bag of Steven King adapatations, I had low expectations for this 1995 TV movie. Turned out to be a pleasant surprise...

- Direction: Nice job with pacing. Things move along briskly, and the three hours run time is over before you know it.

- Script: The editing of the source material is marginal and sensible; it is very faithful to the original story.

- Casting: Casting is damned near perfect except perhaps for the Dinah character who is somewhat grating but not disasterously so. The actors are pretty close to how I envisioned them.

- Acting: Nice job by the cast. Bronson Pinchot as Toomey is especially good along with Mark Lindsay Chapman as Nick.

- Special Effects: Better than expected for 1995 TV movie CGI effects. Sure, they're cartoony but given what the script called for them to execute on a TV movie budget using CGI, which was cutting edge at the time, they're fine. Do they compare with modern 100 million plus budget theatrical film effects from a decade later? No. But is this a realistic expectation? Again, no.

Not the worst King adaptation I've seen - not by a long stretch. To the contrary, this is one of the more credible TV movie stabs at science fiction. It's an entertaining, competently executed, and faithful adaptation of a very good short story by Steven King that's well worth a look.

4 out of 5 stars Classic Stephen King collection.......2007-07-30

This is a great collection for any Stephen King fan.

Although I enjoyed "Golden Years", I would have liked it extended. The plot and character development have all the potential to have been made into a two series tv program. That was the only thing stopping me from giving it five stars.

    3 out of 5 stars A so so collection........2006-08-10

Here are my thoughts on this DVD collection. Cujo and The Stand are great movies. Thinner and Golden years suck big time. The Langoliers would be great if only it were rereleased with some better special effects (primarily the CGI needs much work). All in all, not a bad collection, but only two out of five movies in the pack are worth keeping. However this is just my point of view, if you like the films in this collection, I would recomend it to you. After all, everyone is different, right. Well, thats my review.

    5 out of 5 stars Best Ever.......2006-07-25

Well since I love horror and especially Stephen King, this collection is great!!!
I love all the movies in it and can't wait to collect more!!

I have 13 Stephen King movies so far....

    5 out of 5 stars fantastic.......2006-07-09

IT WAS A VERY SPECIAL NIGHT FOR OUR FAMILY. WE HAD READ THE BOOKS AND THE WAY THEY WERE REPRESENTED IN MOVIE FORM WAS EXCEPTIONAL. I WOULD ADVISE A VIEWING OF THESE MOVIES TO EVERYONE.

4 out of 5 stars 3 Great Movies, One okay movie, and one piece of garbage.......2005-10-04

First of all, if you don't like long movies steer clear of this set. With the exception of Thinner and Cujo these movies are 4 hours long and up. As far as the contents, this box set has some great movies, Cujo is a classic horror film that caused me to have a phobia of dogs when I was little. The Stand is one of the best (and longest) movies I have ever seen, a classic good vs evil or even the disciples vs Satan. And then there is the Langoliers, a movie that understandably gets different review but I though was brilliant and very well casted. Along these three excellent movies there is Thinner which isn't a bad movie but it's nothing exceptional either, and The Golden Years which is a long long boaring piece of garbage. I have yet to make it through the Golden Years in one sitting without falling asleep so I have no idea how it ends but from other reviews it's just as bad as the rest of the movie. For the money this is a solid buy, especially if you are a Stephen King fan as I am. I do want to know when will the put some of his other great movies in one package. Movies like Needful Things, The Tommyknockers, Storm of the Century, and It? Just a thought!

2 out of 5 stars Stephen King's The Golden Years is absolutely horrendous.......2003-01-14

Of the two movies in this set The Langoliers was pretty mediocre but Stephen King's The Golden Years stands out as without doubt one of the worst movies I have ever seen! The plot is that an explosion in a secret laboratory sprays an old guard with unknown chemicals that begin to turn the man younger instead of older. As the government is interested in finding out more about this development, the guard is hunted across the country. The movie was so slow and uneventful that I fast-forwarded the last half hour hoping in vain for something to happen. The movie was so boring that there is no sign that Stephen King was involved in this. Please avoid at all costs unless you want to fall asleep!

Thinner is the only one with commentary from cast/director. Cujo is in Mono! Not even close to the potential that DVD has. All three of these movies could have been put on one disc. ?????????????????????????

5 out of 5 stars Four outta Five ain't bad..........2000-03-25

I gave this collection 4 stars because it contains the 5 star movie "The Langoliers". I took a star away because I was left wishing that "The Langoliers" and "Cujo" had a little more to them. A "cast list" and an "extra scenes" option would have been nice. I guess I expect more from a DVD. I like all three of these movies and look forward to watching them again.

This was worth every penny I have paid. It has three of the best movies based on the books of Stephen King. It is certainly a must for all King fans!
