When it was released during Hollywood's golden year of 1939, The Wizard of Oz didn't start out as the perennial classic it has since become. The film did respectable business, but it wasn't until its debut on television that this family favorite saw its popularity soar. And while Oz's TV broadcasts are now controlled by media mogul Ted Turner (who owns the rights), the advent of home video has made this lively musical a mainstay in the staple diet of great American films. Young Dorothy Gale (Judy Garland), her dog, Toto, and her three companions on the yellow brick road to Oz--the Tin Man (Jack Haley), the Cowardly Lion (Bert Lahr), and the Scarecrow (Ray Bolger)--have become pop-culture icons and central figures in the legacy of fantasy for children. As the Wicked Witch who covets Dorothy's enchanted ruby slippers, Margaret Hamilton has had the singular honor of scaring the wits out of children for more than six decades. The film's still as fresh, frightening, and funny as it was when first released. It may take some liberal detours from the original story by L. Frank Baum, but it's loyal to the Baum legacy while charting its own course as a spectacular film. Shot in glorious Technicolor, befitting its dynamic production design (Munchkinland alone is a psychedelic explosion of color and decor), The Wizard of Oz may not appeal to every taste as the years go by, but it's required viewing for kids of all ages. --Jeff Shannon

DVD features
The Wizard of Oz DVD released in 1999 was loaded with extra features, but it's now safe to throw away that version in all its cardboard-package glory in favor of this new two-disc edition. First things first: All the bonus material from the earlier disc is there (with one small exception). That includes the Angela Lansbury-hosted documentary The Making of a Movie Classic; the outtakes and deleted scenes, including Judy Garland's "Over the Rainbow" reprise and the home-movie recording of "The Jitterbug"; the sketches and stills and composer Harold Arlen's home movies; the audio underscores and radio programs; the 1979 interviews with Margaret Hamilton, Ray Bolger, and Jack Haley; and other items too numerous to mention. (Some text introductions to the features have been replaced by narration by Lansbury, for whatever reason.) Brand-new to the 2005 edition is a sharp restoration using Warner's Ultra Resolution process and an accompanying featurette on how it's done. The technicians also discuss how the sound was remixed, though that would have been more effective had it included surround-sound demonstrations (the featurette is in 2.0). Other features on the new set include a commentary track by critic John Fricke supplemented by vintage cast interviews (he offers a lot of trivia, and debunks the myth that Shirley Temple was ever close to getting the Dorothy role); profiles of nine cast members and clips of other movies they appeared in (including Toto); a lightly animated 10-minute storybook again narrated by Lansbury; 2001 and 2005 behind-the-scenes featurettes; and a 1950 Lux Radio Theater broadcast. Oh, and if you were still wondering about the missing material mentioned above--the 1999 disc included one-minute excerpts of three early treatments of The Wizard of Oz. Those excerpts are not included in the two-disc special edition, but the third disc of the three-disc collector's edition includes the complete versions of those treatments and more. --David Horiuchi

5 out of 5 stars Great film without the extra crap you don't want.......2007-09-08

There seems to be six or seven different DVD versions of this film (a new one out every year) with more and more bonus features, extras, etc. However, if you're only interested in seeing the actual film and are generally bored and/or underwhelmed by bonus features (like me!), I recommend this version for nearly half the cost of newer multiple-disc sets. This remastered version has excellent picture!

5 out of 5 stars Dorothy and Toto.......2007-09-04

Well, everybody probably already knows about this product. I am trying to get my grandchildren (5 & 3 1/2 yrs old) interested in live action movies with real people in them. They watch cartoon characters & "Shrek" type movies all the time. I have a Madam Alexander doll of Dorothy and Toto. I tried to explain to them who she was and they got interested in the story.
So, I ordered this and sent it to them in Detroit. They loved it. They sat through the whole movie. And my daughter said the extras are great!

5 out of 5 stars OVER THE RAINBOW.......2007-08-28

I hesitated to spend the money on this 3 disc set. How wrong I was! This is THE set for "Wizard of Oz" fans. The movie looks gorgeous and the special features have something for everyone. I found myself grinning so much at some of the features that my face hurt afterwards. It's great to hear and see the homage given to this film. This is one DVD set that invites repeat viewing of all the discs and you will gladly accept the invitation again and again.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars This is a solid mature effort..........2007-09-12

I wasn't sure what to expect. I know about Dr. Strange, but I was never "into" Dr Strange. I felt the movie was well paced, well written, and well performed.

I feel that these sort of comic based movie stories are all too formulaic, and Dr. Strange was; however, it was still plenty entertaining. I think it could have use a bit more intensity in it's action, and charactor interactions; it's a subdued movie much of the time. I expected more of an ending as well, but again this was solid.

I don't think this was on par with Ultimate Avengers, my favorite newer Marvel DTV so far. I feel this was more like Invincible Iron Man. So if you like Iron Man, you will probably like Dr. Strange. In my opinion.

3 out of 5 stars Dr. Strange... a strange choice?.......2007-09-11

Like Iron Man, I thought this was done really well. The animation and back story along with the acting was very good. I just question Marvels choice of doing a Dr. Strange animated movie. I am not complaing, I like that they didn't go with the standard X-Men or other really popular characters but it seems like a 'Strange' choice. But Marvel also did a made for TV movie back in the late 70's early 80's of Strange too. So they might be trying to get an old favorite character over with some new fans.

Its a good movie and a good story. I recommend it.

5 out of 5 stars Dr. Strange Movie.......2007-09-06

Marvel does it again! This movie pays tribute to the character by going more in-depth into the characters personal life, which reflected on the choices he made. It touches on how tragedy can emotional blind a person from seeing what is really inside. It also shows how people can put up walls believing they are protected themselves, but in truth can be holding themselves back from something greater. Well done.

4 out of 5 stars Another more than solid Marvel animated treat.......2007-09-05

Doctor Strange, the fourth Marvel animated feature distributed by Lion's Gate, is a pure treat. Re-telling the origin of Marvel's sorcerer supreme, Doctor Strange follows the wealthy and full of himself doctor and surgeon Stephen Strange, as he bears witness to a supernatural event before an accident robs him of his greatest tools: his hands. Soon enough, Strange learns he has a destiny, which leads him to Tibet and coming under the teachings of the Ancient One, who foretells of a powerful and ancient evil callded Dorramu, which is preparing to rear it's ugly head. Though there are a few more modern twists (a car accident robs Strange of the use of his hands here, his faithful assistant Wong is much less ethnic), this animated origin story is plenty entertaining. The animation and voice acting are top notch, and the Doctor Strange mythology of the classic Marvel comics is put to good use as well. Though like the other Marvel animated features, Doctor Strange is an acquired taste, but for those who have so far enjoyed the Ultimate Avengers and Iron Man DVD's, Doctor Strange is more than well worth a visit.

4 out of 5 stars Strangely refreshing.......2007-09-03

Admittedly I'm not a long-time follower of Dr Strange, and I nod with respect to those who can comment more authoritatively about the accuracy of the adaptation. Nonetheless, I am pleased and impressed with the talent and creativity that goes into these Marvel Ani-movies. The comics corporations just do tooo much foot-dragging in adapting their properties to the big or small screen, denying fans the fun and excitement of seeing their favorites spring off the comic page. I've enjoyed the Avengers 1 & 2, and Iron Man, and really wonder what's going to happen with the upcoming future Avengers tale. It's just fun seeing these characters being treated in a polished and respectful manner, and I really wish DC comics would get on the animated movie bandwagon. One thing I don't get is why they don't get these a short run in theaters before going to DVD. Glen Larson did this with the pilot for the original Battlestar Galactica, and cheesy though it was (by today's standards especially), it was still great to see it on the "big screen." Marvel, you listening?

The Prestige attempts a hat trick by combining a ridiculously good-looking cast, a highly regarded new director, and more than one sleight of hand. Does it pull it off? Sort of. Christian Bale and Hugh Jackman play rival magicians who were once friends before an on-stage tragedy drove a wedge between them. While Bale's Alfred Borden is a more skilled illusionist, Jackman's Rufus Angier is the better showman; much of the film's interesting first half is their attempts to sabotage--and simultaneously, top--each other's tricks. Even with the help of a prop inventor (Michael Caine) and a comely assistant (Scarlett Johansson), Angier can't match Borden's ultimate illusion: The Transporting Man. Angier's obsession with learning Borden's trick leads him to an encounter with an eccentric inventor (David Bowie) in a second half that gets bogged down in plot loops and theatrics. Director Christopher Nolan, reuniting with his Batman Begins star Bale, demonstrates the same dark touch that hued that film, but some plot elements--without giving anything away--seem out of place with the rest of the movie. It's better to sit back and let the sometimes-clunky turns steer themselves than try to draw back the black curtain. That said, The Prestige still manages to entertain long after the magician has left the stage--a feat in itself. --Ellen A. Kim

I just saw "The Illusionist" a couple of weeks ago and was afraid that this movie would be too similar, as they came out around the same time and are both about magicians. I could NOT have been more wrong. Two completely different films.

Anyway, this movie was amazing. It took me a while to get excited about it, but then I couldn't look away. The ending especially - wow.

5 out of 5 stars PLEASANTLY SURPRISED.......2007-09-15

I picked this up because I think Christian Bale is an incredible actor. I was pleasantly surprised by the movie's storyline. I can honestly say that this a movie that is great the first time around and even better when you watch it a second time. SUPERB ACTING ALL THE WAY AROUND!

5 out of 5 stars A Note To Prospective Viewers/Buyers Of This Movie..........2007-09-11

Just so we can stem the tide of surly, dissatisfied reviewers who obviously lack an imagination or sense of wonder:

THERE IS SCIENCE FICTION IN THIS MOVIE. THERE IS FANTASY IN THIS MOVIE.

Ok? It's not a moldy period piece about the 19th century. If that's what you are looking for, look elsewhere.

Now, for those of you who actually have an imagination and enjoy seeing the impossible become possible: The Prestige was probably the best picture of 2006, despite what Oscar thought. A fantastic film. Five stars!

2 out of 5 stars Why do they explain everything at the end???.......2007-09-09

Let me just say that I loved Memento. Part of that movie's appeal is that they don't spoon feed you everything at the end but rather provide hints that leaves the viewer to try to unravel it's mysteries and inspires one to watch the movie multiple times to try to figure it out. The Prestige is frustrating as it had the potential to provide the same experience, but instead everything is explained to you at the end. The movie provided enough subtle hints to allow the viewer the fun of trying to solve the film on their own, while debating the possibilities with friends. I felt robbed. My suggestion to viewers is to turn off the movie with @ 5 minutes left and attempt to figure it out on your own....
Are you watching closely? - No need to do so if you watch the movie to it's disappointing finale...

3 out of 5 stars Good cast; Disappointing story.......2007-09-03

It's interesting that The Prestige and The Illusionist came out so closely together. I saw The Illusionist in the theater and totally loved it. I just saw The Prestige now, having borrowed it from the public library. I'm glad I didn't pay to see it.

The cast is first rate. Any film that features Michael Caine and David Bowie is probably worth seeing. Hugh Jackman and Christian Bale were both very good. The performances kept me watching.

The inclusion of Nichola Tesla and his battle with Thomas Edison was interesting and one could say that their rivalry mirrored that of the two magicians here. What bothered me most was the ending. It was a cheap trick and it spoiled the whole movie for me. What a contrast with the inspired ending of The Illusionist.

In a nutshell, The Prestige is about hate; The Illusionist is about love!

Far from the masterful treatment that groundbreaking animator Ralph Bakshi gave the similarly themed The Lord of the Rings just a year later, Wizards feels amateurish. A simplistic distillation of fantasy tropes, the scenario is millions of years after nuclear war wipes out civilization. Middle Earth fairies, elves, and magic emerge from the "good lands," while dimwitted mutants with poor comic timing emerge from the nuclear wastes. In the ultimate confrontation between good and evil, a hippie-ish wizard named Avatar defends his utopia against the technological and neo-Nazi revival of his bad-seed twin, Blackwolf. With volleys of jokes that couldn't hit a barn door, elves with Brooklyn accents, and the dubious climax that sees the kindly old wizard using one of the hated machines of war to triumph over evil, Wizards is one of fantasy animation's least successful examples. --Alan E. Rapp

Description

Set on a post-apocalyptic Earth, this fantasy adventure follows the story of Avatar, the kindly, eccentric sorcerer-ruler of Montagar, a rainbow paradise inhabited by elves and fairies. Avatar?s evil brother, Blackwolf, dominates Scortch, a bleak land of goblins and wraiths. When the power-hungry Blackwolf attacks Montagar, Avatar, accompanied only by a spirited young woman and a courageous elf, must enter the darkness of Scortch to save his world. WIZARDS is a thought-provoking, kaleidoscopic feast for the eyes that will enthrall animation fans and film lovers of all ages.

5 out of 5 stars Wizards/Lord of the Rings.......2007-09-15

REALLY enjoyed the special features. Lots of stuff shared directly from Bakshi directly. You may know that the Bakshi Lord of the Rings DVD just has the movie. But because so much of Wizards was basically preperation for the making of Rings, you kind of get some of what should have been given with that DVD.

5 out of 5 stars For the Love of Wizards.......2007-08-14

I remember at the age of 12 my old man taking me to the drive in to see this movie. It was the sexiest cartoon I had ever seen to that point of my young life. I especially loved the ending. I really loved sharing it with my son who is now 16. It is a fantasy classic.

4 out of 5 stars SIgn of the times.......2007-07-24

Seeing this one-time favorite animated movie was good. The cutting edge animation (for the time) was still worthy of respect. As much as I've always enjoyed the combination of free drawing and other media (like many of the evil soldiers), the final battle between the brothers is what makes the movie for me, as it did many years ago.

I passed this movie on to a young law student so he could see how things used to be. I bet he'll like it.

I was trying to describe Wizards to my 17-year-old, then thought "I wonder if it's available for sale?" Sure enough! It was every bit as whimsical, inventive and bizarre as I remembered!

Less raunchy than Tommy and more conventional than Tron, The Wizard also revolves around gaming. There's even a Bridges on board. In Tron it was Jeff, in The Wizard it's Beau. As opposed to the rock opera's pinball-playing "deaf, dumb, and blind kid," however, quasi-catatonic Jimmy (Luke Edwards) is a video game wiz. While the nine-year-old lives with his mother, half-brothers Corey (Fred Savage, circa The Wonder Years) and Nick (Christian Slater, fresh from Heathers) live with their father, Sam (Bridges). When Jimmy, who recently lost his sister, is placed in a home, Corey busts him out for a trip to California. (Today, Jimmy's condition would be labeled post-traumatic stress disorder.) As they're leaving Utah, they join forces with gaming enthusiast Haley (Rilo Kiley's Jenny Lewis), who suggests LA's National Video Game Championships. So, off they go by foot, skateboard, and the kindness of strangers. Sam, Nick, and obnoxious bounty hunter Putnam (Will Seltzer) are close behind. The outcome may be a foregone conclusion--the fractured family makes their peace--but The Wizard still offers a nostalgic, Nintendo-laden look at 1980s gamer culture (Power Glove, Super Mario Bros. 3, etc.). Plus, sharp-eyed viewers will spot Toby Maguire milling around before the showdown at Universal Studios Theme Park. If not for the hitchhiking, gambling, and reckless automotive destruction--after Putnam takes a knife to Sam's tires, Sam smashes his headlights with a shovel--the movie would be appropriate for all ages. In other words, it earns its PG rating. --Kathleen C. Fennessy

Description

Fred Savage stars in this warm-hearted family adventure that features the excitement and thrills of video game competition. Corey (Savage) refuses to let his emotionally disturbed younger brother Jimmy (Luke Edwards) be institutionalized, and the two run away together. They soon join forces with a resourceful girl (Jenny Lewis), who notices that Jimmy has a special talent: he is a "wizard" at video games and gets the high score on absolutely everything he plays. Evading their parents and a sinister bounty hunter, the trio head for a climactic showdown at the video game championships in California. Co-starring Beau Bridges and Christian Slater, it's an inside look at the world of video gamers that will have you cheering the whole way.

5 out of 5 stars A Must-See.......2007-07-17

An absolute classic. I remember when this movie first debuted and was completely shocked and excited to see that it exisited on DVD... finally! Who doesn't like a movie that includes teenage romance, drama, and Nintendo (the ONLY game system) :) Definitely a must-see and "must-buy."

5 out of 5 stars The Wizard.......2007-07-13

It's was just as great watching it today as it was when I watched it
15 years ago when I was 9! What a great movie!

4 out of 5 stars Very good 80's comedy-drama!.......2007-06-04

13 year old Corey (Fred Savage) has a young troubled brother named Jimmy (Luke Edwards) who is about to be sent to an insitute and both run away together. Jimmy's special talent is mastering video games and together they join up with a girl (Jenny Lewis) as they must go to California to enter the video game championship.

Highly entertaining and funny comedy drama that has been considered as a 100 minute commercial for Nintendo, Universal Studios and Hostess is quite a blast to watch. The acting is good especially from Beau Bridges and Christian Slater with a cameo appearence by Tobey Mcguire, the film is notable for giving gamers a sneak preview to "Super Mario Bros. 3".

The DVD is pratically bareboned with no trailer or extras at all but that's ok cause the picture is quite good and so is the sound.

Amazon.com essential video

The Wizard of Oz DVD released in 1999 was loaded with extra features, but it's now safe to throw away that version in all its cardboard-package glory in favor of the new three-disc edition. First things first: All the bonus material from the earlier disc is there.

The 1999 disc also included one-minute excerpts of three early treatments of The Wizard of Oz. The third disc of the three-disc collector's edition includes the complete versions of those treatments and more. They are four silent films: "The Wonderful Wizard of Oz" (1910, 13 min.), "The Magic Cloak of Oz" (1914, 38 min.), His Majesty, the Scarecrow of Oz (1914, 59 min., written and directed by Baum himself), The Wizard of Oz (1925, 72 min., Larry Semon). The fifth treatment is Ted Eshbaum's 1933 Technicolor cartoon short which has songs and sound, and is the first depiction of Kansas in black and white and Oz in color. The third disc also has a 38-minute biography of L. Frank Baum, and collector's-edition supplements include a gorgeous set of photo cards among other materials.

Barbie shines in her third animated movie, an adaptation of the classic ballet Swan Lake. A young girl named Odette (played by Barbie) follows a beautiful unicorn into the enchanted forest and picks up a magic crystal that proclaims her destiny as savior of the enchanted forest. Odette, hampered by an overwhelming sense of insecurity, proclaims herself unfit for the job and sets out to leave the forest when the evil wizard Rothbart (voiced by Kelsey Grammer) turns her into a swan. Bolstered by the powers of the magic crystal, Odette vows to defeat Rothbart. Meanwhile, love blossoms between Odette and the town's Prince Daniel and, eventually, Odette finds a courage within herself that, combined with her intelligence and the true love between her and the Prince, proves powerful enough to defeat Rothbart. The computer-generated animation in this 83-minute presentation is vivid and lifelike, the London Symphony gives a wonderful performance of Tchaikovsky's original music, and the choreography and dancing is nicely done thanks to Peter Martins and the New York City Ballet. 5 out of 5 stars A Must for Any Barbie or Ballet Fan.......2007-06-10

Much to my surprised my three year old love this gift from a friend. I was also please by the music. The sound track is wonderful and the bonus tracks included on the DVD are worth a look. My three old really enjoy the section when the ballet dances were explained in detail. I am considering buying the rest of the movies in this series.

    5 out of 5 stars A Must See!.......2006-12-30

Swan Lake rocks! Barbie stars as a young girl named Odette who works in a bakery with her father. And one day, a unicorn is on the loose in town Babie{Odette} folows her into an echanted forest. The villagers tied a rope around the unicorn. So Odette plucks a crystal out of a tree to cut the rope. Then A magical Fairy queen apears named Theresa and tells Odette about her evil cousin Rothbart."He cast a spell on everyone in the forest". Odette saw children turned into animals."And whoever frees the crystal, will save the forest". "But I'm just an ordinary girl says Odette. So watch this movie to find out each of us is braver than we think.

4 out of 5 stars All time great classic.......2006-12-26

This movie was ok, I guess. I think people loved it so much because the story was tested by time and after so many centuries people still liked the story.
Some of the dialouge was surprisingly similar to Barbie as Rapunzel however.

5 out of 5 stars Great Movie for the young and older.......2006-10-02

I bought this movie for my daughter when it first came out. My daughter was 2 almost 3 and she loved it. She is almost 6 now and still loves to watch it. However, I have to admit I really like to watch it too. It is my favorite animated Barbie movie to date. It is so beatifully done.

5 out of 5 stars Barbie of Swan Lake rocks! Totally rocks!!!!! .......2006-08-18

I Love barbie of swan lake. If you LOVE unicorns, fairys, magic, sparkles, etc. then this is the movie for you! SPOILER!!! First off: Barbie\Odette is a girl that works in her papa's bakery. Also, there is Odette's sister that rides a horse, she only appears a few times in the movie. Odette follows a unicorn,Lila, into the Enchanted Forest. She pulls out the magic crystal from a tree. Then the Fairy queen appears and tells Odette she can save the forest. Odette thinks she is not the right person. But then Rothbart turn Odette into a swan. The fairy queen change the spell and odette is a swan by day/girl at night. She needs to find the book of forest lore, and goes to Erasmus's cave..........Then prince daniel is about to kill Odette :0 but ends up fasinated by her beautiful-ness....fall in love.....etc,etc,etc.....GET THE MOVIE TO FIND OUT! THE ''scary''music actually fits in with the movie. my favorite part of this movie is where the fairy queen tells Odette about how rothbart took over the forest. And then Rothbart has freaky red eyes! SERIOUSLY. RED EYES!!!!! AAACCCKKK. WHY did Mattel PUT IN RED EYES?!?!?! those red eyes are so so................................ugh! Then again,I felt I could sit through it. RED EYES only appear 2 times in this movie.... I mean if I were you I would,on the first time the red eyes come, please turn the volume down, and fast foward or go to ''My favorite scenes'' and choose a different scence.First time I saw it (the whole thing)I COULD NOT BELIVE IT!!!!!!! Then I came to the second red eyes thing, when Rothbart was an eagle....I sat through it and it wasn't to bad. that is what I would do. anyway,I think Odile(Rothbart's daughter)'s laugh isn't that annoying I think some of her lines are funny (''Oh, you are all roadkill!'') This movie is...it ROCKS.THIS MOVIE ROCKS EVEN THOUGH IT HAS A RED EYES AND A EVIL ROTHBART. BARBIE LOVER
