The original Fist of the Northstar was one of anime's first true hits in America, and the New Fist series is an even better piece of work. Now available in a single box set priced to sell!

A good series but needs to be fleshed out a little more........2007-08-08
New Fist of the North Star really is a great series. One thing to point out is that even though the title menu proclaims, "Kenshiro's Quest", this really isn't his "quest". He's merely one player in this universe which centers around the city of Last Land, it's ruler(s), and the people tricked by the Last land dictators.
Kenshiro does play a big part in taking out the baddies, but the story is much more setting-driven as opposed to Kenshiro-driven. Do you still get exploding heads? Yep! Actually, about 10 minutes into the first episode, Kenshiro manages to take out half dozen foes of the Last Land gang.
Also the boss fights aren't fleshed out very well. They all (all 2 of them) last roughly 5 minutes. The fights here are much more martial arts driven unlike the original movie which the fights were more aura-driven.
Overall this is a great and insanely graphic series that while could've been fleshed out much more, is a worthwhile edition to any Hokuto no Ken/Fist of the North Star enthusiasts collection.
OK at best.......2007-03-01
First of all if your expecting some type of sequel to the original, forget about it. This doesn't tie into the original in anyway(even though they try to). In fact it doesn't even come close to the original, as far as action and character development. Fist of the Northstar brings back Ken from the first one and his purpose is still the same. He delivers final justice to those who oppress the weak. The earth was plundered due to war and the survivors are fighting for their existence by trying to find a source of clean water. There is a tyrant who seeks to take all the water for himself. Which results in mass killings. The concept of the fist of the northstar is pretty off. But if your looking for action, guts and gore, then this OVA will surely deliver on that end. However the depiction of the fist of the northstar is obviously going to infuriate true fans. This short collection is one disk with 3 one hour episodes. I dont get too deep into animation because if the movie sucks, then animation is the least factor. Despite its flaws, its still a decent watch. However I would still recommend the original before this, but if you can find this cheaper then get it. I purchased mine for $9.95 on another website. 18 bucks is way too much for this.
Completely missed the point........2006-09-26
I don't own this boxed set, though I've seen this series, and as a Fist of the North Star fan, I became angry and sad after watching it. If you're a fan, you'll probably react the same way. Note that this review contains SPOILERS, but considering how terrible this series is, I'm probably doing you a favor by giving you the high points so that you can move on to something better.
To begin with, the creators of this new series totally missed the point(s) of the original. While the original (and "real") Hokuto No Ken was about how one man with godlike power acts as a force for justice in a chaotic world, the new series includes "extreme" close-ups of realistic blood and guts (which were always blurred or off-color in the original TV series, not just because they were meant for younger viewers, but also because the villains' deaths were meant to be symbolic, rather than gruesome and terrifying). The new series has several gratuitous close-ups of brains flying out of nostrils and other ridiculous garbage. It's also shamelessly exploitative and features a totally unrealistic, brainless ninny of a female lead who, aside from serving the purpose of pandering with her nearly-naked body shown from every theoretically titillating angle, exists only to be taken advantage of in every sense (including physically). Otherwise, the characterization is extremely weak and the plot and pacing are all over the place. About the only thing they got right is that this Kenshiro guy is really strong, and people are scared of him.
The new series' primary "villain" is totally uncharismatic and is also a thinly-veiled ripoff of the equally unlikeable Shachi character from the Hokuto No Ken 2 TV series. For the sake of the new series' story, he's pitted against Kenshiro as some kind of equal, even though Kenshiro should, by all rights, completely annihilate him.
The series makes a few feeble attempts to tie into the original story--in the first 5 minutes or so of the first OVA, it's revealed that Raoh had a biological son whom Kenshiro makes his successor. This mysterious child then hurries off into the wasteland, never to be seen again, and that's about it. From then on, we see even more "new" scions of the Hokuto style (a fighting style that the original TV series suggested was highly secret and inimitable--but which led to offshoots in the second TV series, which was not-coincidentally when the Hokuto series and license unequivocally jumped the shark), unsympathetic civilian victims, the aforementioned unrealistically exploited female lead (who, against all reason, forgives the "villain" the trespass of sexual assault), and a limp and meaningless final battle. If you're a Fist of the North Star fan, or even if you're not, do yourself a favor and steer clear of this garbage.
Your better off buying this complete set.......2006-01-03
This box set is perfect for any fan of this series. This show is pretty good but lacking a couple of things you can't really put your finger on but you can just tell is missing. Besides that this is a very exciting and edgy anime box set. If you've seen the series on the anime network and you enjoyed and want to watch it over and over again then this is a smart box to get.
You save about 80 bucks for a series that isn't really worth that much. The style of animation goes together very well with this type of fighting because it shows the ruggedness that is trying to be put across. The violence is a bit crazy but after a while it gets old and you get use to it. The only thing terribly wrong here is that the main character kills everyone the same way, nothing ever changes so you know what's going to happen before it happens. You think since he is skilled with the knowledge of a pressure point fighting technique he would do some different moves to defeat his opponents.
This is a good series but this box makes it worth getting because you save so much you might get tired of some things before the story ends but it's still worth some time. Maybe if this becomes a series they'll think of fixing their mistakes cause New Fist has a lot of potential.
Really bad characterization..........2005-10-26
I really enjoyed the anime TV series and despite its various shortcomings, I liked story and concept elements of the reworked story in the anime movie... but New Fist of the North Star OVA parts 1-3 left me with a really bad taste. I'm no FOTNS buff, but whether this OVA is based upon an original novel or not, the characterization and actions are unbelievable.
The characters of Sara, Toby, Sanga and Seigi (sp?) all twist and change by the end and through flashbacks to become (at least for me) very hard to like. Sara is your typical wimpy anime woman, crying and going on about moral guff even in defense of someone who raped her and brutally murdered dozens of innocents by his own hand, and gave orders that led to the death of countless more. Toby goes completely insane, and the transition to insanity is not given enough time to be a believable jump. Sanga's insanity and treatment of his son is somehow acceptable at the end by everyone, when conveniently the Aunt of Seigi (sp?) shows up. Everything is contrived by the end and nothing is satisfactorily concluded.
This story is a waste of Kenshiro (the star character) who normally is one of the few characters out there in any anime/show/manga, that will deliver final justice to those that truly deserve it. I eagerly look forward to his death dealing to those villains that the story builds up, as very few other shows allow their star to step out of the politically correct 'life-sparing' frame of mind. The end of this OVA robs the viewer of seeing a despicable villain being killed at Kenshiro's hands, and leaves us with his own rape victim in tears mourning him.
Overall the whole thing, melodramatic and violent as Fist of the North Star is, could not be upheld by the characterization. I wasted my money on this. If you really want to see Fist of the North Star, I advise finding the original series. For me, my whole interest in Fist of the North Star has been destroyed.

The New Fist Seem To Be The Best.......2005-01-06
New fist of the north star is truly the birth of a great series. With great characters and a well done storyline it only leaves you asking for more.
In this volume Kenshiro encounters a big twist in the plot that seemed to be already decided. When he finds that Tobi has gone mad and betrayed him, I mean how dumb is that. Kenshiro is the only one that can beat Seiji and Tobi would rather have power over his own people's lives. The only downfall in this series is the continuous pressure point head explosions I mean it was great in the first episode but after a while it gets annoying and they dont even poke the pressure point with their finger anymore they just punch them and they expload it's still kind of cool but I think they should pull back on it just a little bit. I don't like to tell everything so I'll end it with this, overall episode 3 gets 5 stars for great animation,an unpredictable story line, and great fight seens. The last fight seen may have been the best one yet out of the first 3 eps. This episode gives a little info on the background of Kenshiros fighting style and the fist of the northstar.

Twenty years after the initial program debuted, a new team is continuing the long-running series, Fist of the North Star (Hokuto no Ken, literally Ken the Great Bear Fist, 1984). Except for the computer-generated motorcycles and special effects, the new Fist of the North Star is very close to the original. Stallone look-alike Kenshiro, the heir to the Hokuto Shinken school of martial arts, wanders the post-apocalyptic Earth, righting wrongs and making villains' heads explode. His new sidekicks are Tobi, an information dealer; Tobi's mute, amnesiac younger brother, Bista; and Sara, a woman who uses Hokuto Shinken techniques to heal the sick. Ken protects settlers from petty despots and Mad Max-style gangs of motorcycle-riding bodybuilders: The world may have been devastated by a nuclear holocaust, but there are still ample supplies of gasoline, tires, and steroids. (Rated 17 and older: graphic violence, violence against women, grotesque imagery) --Charles Solomon
Description
A twist to the classic favorite that begins in the aftermath of the great apocalypse, across a barren Earth, chaos is the rule, and order the exception with bandits and enterprising overlords terrorizing the survivors of the holocaust. Will a hero rise from the ashes and cut a swath of justice across the Earth's ruined landscape? In the aftermath of Kenshiro's attack on the citadel of Last Land, the boy known as Lord Doha falls deathly ill. Sara's prognosis is dire: only a few days before death takes him. The serum to save his life is a two days' drive each way. When pressed by Kenshiro, Sara admits there is a shorter path
but it runs through Cliffland, a land haunted by demons who practice a mysterious killing technique. Fates collide as Kenshiro takes up the quest and departs for Cliffland. Suddenly, another mysterious martial artist arrives in Last Land, pursued by two of the dreaded Clifflanders. The fighter gives his name as Seiji and vows to take all that Sanga has owned. The balance of power is once again thrown into chaos as fist is pitted against fist in a struggle to see whose justice will prevail. Meanwhile, Sara anxiously waits for Kenshiro to return
if he returns at all.

Better Animation but bad story.......2007-05-25
The original didn't have the best animation or voice overs but at least it had an effective plot, original martial arts violence caught your attention, and it struck you with a deep philosophical premise- very Kurosawa- Put down the violence for a greater good. In this New version you find better animation and sequences such as fast moving camera shots and cleaner coloration and editing but the story is just flat out boring. You get Ken and we have all seen him in the first story die and rise with cool enemies like Shin and others. In this new one Volume 1- You get this big buff King who is just a big wuss- absolutely no match for him. The actual plot development is about as meaningless as it gets. The usual bad guy takes power and manipulates the public and kidnaps somebody, Ken must defeat him. Even the fighting is just what we've seen before- heads blowing up. Theres no deep philosophy about non-violence and its effective use in a greater good. The key for me in something new is the story, plot, or character development. There is nothing New in the New Fist of the North Star that you haven't seen before and the animation compared to some other films is just a joke. It really had to do with budget I'm sure I would advise people to check it out though if your a fan or go to the original.
Waist of time for eagar Kenshiro fans.......2005-11-09
When I first heard about the new Fist series I was so excited. That excitement turned into extreme disappointment after watching the first and second episodes. It seems that Tetuso Hara and Brunson had absolutely nothing to do with this series. The animation is devoid of the heavy lines and shadowed figures that silently conveyed a sense of danger and despair in the original series and the movie. The Story is pure garbage, with all of the different story lines available this anime makes one question why it was produced in the first place.
In the original you cheer for kenshiro as he dishes out just deserts. You know Fist of the North Star is unbeatable but when a new technique is used on villains you get your emotional rewards 10 fold.
I read somewhere that not one but TWO new Fist of the North Star movies are being made, I hope they don't follow the path of this anime!
The third chapter that should have never made it.......2005-09-28
I'm a huge fan of Hokuto no Ken series since the early 80's and I was very disappointed when I saw this series. Everything seems made to be a mere marketing operation. The 3D scenes don't always match match correctly with 2D, the animation is not so good, the plot is a bit boring and the new voice of Kenshiro is much worse than the original one by Akira Kamiya.
Not familiar but good.......2004-12-29
I bought this in Japan and am now enjoying the view. Yes I agree that it was much better in terms of it's animation than the original, but it was made in the Slam Dunk era so you really can't say that the original had terrible animation. For it's time it was cutting edge. It's a problem I've been having when I try to show the original to friends.
The story however seems to have lost a little of it's appeal. I mean the making of justice while using force to stop force was kinda the point.
I kinda knew from the beginning that Fist would never be popular enough in the US because the message makes no sense to many Western minds. I was raised on the original series so it's kinda steeped deep into my thinking.
Two things need to be known about the voice acting. First and foremost it was a creative decision to change Ken's voice actor. The director thought that his voice needed a bit more maturity than previous.
Second Gackt doing the voice of Seiji is important. He was brought into the series to increase the popularity right off the bat. If you don't know who Gackt is you can always do a google search or watch Moon Child.
This was only meant to be something to chew on for now.
When I say that I mean that the most popular series only continue MANY years after they have originally "died"
Saint Seiya just finished recently. I think it's been 10 years. Hellsing is continuing soon but not until the comic is finished. #7 just came out here. There are supposed to be 10.
So in reality it's just something small for us to use for now. In that sense I'm happy with it.
It's well done for it's era and acceptable as an off path to the story. Perhaps someday Ken will become like his father Ryuken and fall victim to another chaotic time... but that's one of the things about the philosophy. The circle only continues with each step forward. Ryu will someday be the successor and maybe he will be like his father or maybe more like his uncles. In either case Hokuto Shinken will live on and so will the idea that the series can be made again and again. Just look at the blue sky series or any series on martial arts. They all borrow something from Fist.
So in short this is for those who are fans of Anime only. Especially those who love the computer generation Anime Style of Ghost in the Shell and such. It's not a very good introduction to the world of Anime but pick your viewers wisely and you never know what might happen.
BTW...
This is not the continuation of the end of the US released original. For the rest of that you'll need to get a knockoff off of the usual sites. Watch that first and your appreciation for this one will appear. If you're willing to fork out the $150 that is.
Big let down........2004-12-27
I took a big chance at Suncoast and used my Christmas gift certificate to buy this "$30" piece of poo. Usually I'm pretty good about researching online before making a major purchase and boy did I pay for it. First off I couldnt find any decent reviews on these new DVDs online. And, I should have known that something as big as new "Fist of North Star" DVDs to be released and not hear a word about it meant something was up. If you remember how bad the sequel to "Heavy Metal" was then this is about the same thing. A very generic drawn out fake of one of the best feature films Ive seen. The "Fist of the North Star" movie must be too violent to re-release so instead they make these boring as hell DVDs that only cost you around $90 for all three! Thank god I'm stopping at Vol.1. Todays censored market doesnt allow for ultra violence and gore in media like you had in the 80s. To make remakes or new versions of something like Fist of the North Star and not have that level of raw carnage is impossible. These movies have a little bit of the staple Fist of the North Star stuff. Like head explosions, and blood. But not to the detail and perfection that was done in the feature film. Now I'm not talking of the TV series that they're currently milking here in the States. I mean the film from the 80s that if youve never seen you wouldnt know what I'm talking about. I think these DVDs are tricky little trends that U.S. productions are coming up with to make you think your getting a quality product from Japan by sticking Japanese voice actors in it. Even the story in this first DVD is sooooo draged out. I think it could have been summarised in an open monologue in the first 5 min. of any good production. It's a completely original story from the TV series and film but who cares you'll fall asleep trust me. Whether this is original stuff from Japn or U.S. licensed material this DVD sucks so bad I don't have the grammatical skills to put my dissapointment in writing. This is the warning I didnt get. Find as much info before hand. Two thumbs way down.

Even Better.......2004-11-10
This 2nd installation of New Fist of the North Star also rocks. It also leaves me hungry for more, and nothing short of my demise shall prevent me from buying the next one!
In this episode we see Kenshiro about to embark on a quest which only he can see through. He must save a life, the life of the young Lord Doha. He must obtain a life-saving serum by traversing a path towards danger. Without spoiling the plot, suffice it to say he will be pitted against deadly foes of a familiar and surprising nature. There are revelations, the introduction of a new foe, and something disturbing happens to Sara.
I highly reccommend this series, and this dvd. The outstanding visuals, storyline, and action are awesome! And don't forget, this stars Kenshiro! The Fist of the North Star returns!
If it is allowed I'd like to mention my recent acquisition of the complete entire series of the original Fist of the North Star. The original, all 152 glorious episodes! Despite the poor translation, I highly reccommend this for FOTNS fanatics like myself. Find out what happened to Bart and Lynn! Did Yulia really die? and who is The Fist King? find out. Purchase these dvd's if you can find them.
