5 out of 5 stars The Legacy of Puppet Master.......2007-01-28

In my mind the best of all the Full Moon movies. Puppet Master is a Classic Gore fest that grows on you. I remeber when i first got the box last year off ebay for only $34.00 I coulden't wait to get it in the mail. These movies are classic and aloways will be. Full Moon has gone through some hard times and have over came them. And are putting out NEW films now, but they can and will never be able to match there earlyer work.

This is the First time ever that the Puppet Master DVD Box Set has been released with all of the films in it.....with an exception of Puppet Master: The Legacy released by Shadow Entertainment and Puppet Master VS. Demonic Toys released by Anchor Bay.

In Puppet Master, André Toulon is a puppet maker and the best of the kind. One day he happens upon an old Egyptian formula able to create life, so he decides to give life to his puppets. The Nazis seek to use this knowledge to their advantage and in desperation, Toulon commits suicide. Some years later four psychics get on the trail of a former colleague who suddenly commits suicide, and they decide to investigate the mansion he killed himself in. Along with his widow, they uncover the secrets of the Puppet Master.

In Puppet Master 2, the puppets return the original master, Andre Toulon, back to life inorder for him to help them kill and collect brains for more fluid for them to live off for another half century. And when a inspective group come to the hotel believe in nothing but Alex Whitaker's stories they keep watch, and throughout the movie they are hunted down one by one for their brains and when Andre sees Carolyn Bramwell who looks just like his dead wife Elsa, everything goes to hell.

In Puppet Master 3, Set in Berlin during WWII. The Nazi regime is attempting to develop a drug that will animate the dead, in order to use in the war effort. Toulin arouses suspicion as a Nazi dissident, and his secret is discovered. During a Nazi raid on his home, Toulin's beautiful wife is murdered. Toulin vows revenge, with the help of his animated puppets. This movie gives a new perspective on Toulin and his "friends".

In Puppet Master 4, A young scientist working on an artificial intelligence project is the target of strange gremlin-like creatures, who are out to kill him and thus terminate his research. By coincidence, in one of the rooms he uses, there's a mysterious case containing the puppets of the "puppet master". When the puppets are brought to life, they help destroy the creatures.

In Puppet Master 5: The Final Chapter, After having his demons destroyed, an anciet evil named Zutek creates a puppet of himself to release on the world. With the help of Toulon's spirit and the Rick Myers destroys the demon and becomes the new puppet master

In Curse of the Puppet Master: The Human Experiment, Robert "Tank" begins to work for Dr. Magrew sculpting a puppet for the Doctor to bring to life using the work of Andre Toulon. Robert begins to fall in love with the Doctors daughter, Jane. Unbeknownst to Robert the Doctor is trying to create a "perfect race" of puppet humans. Jane discovers a "matt puppet" which is from his first assistant. She comes back just in time to see her father, cut up by the puppets, has succeeded in putting a living human, Robert, into the puppet he carved.

In Retro Puppet Master, It's 1892 and Sutekh is hopping mad. It seems a 3,000 year old Egyptian sorcerer has stolen one of the God's secrets of life - that of instilling the souls of the dying into inanimate things. Sutekh raises three mummified former high priests, led by the villainous "First Servant", and charges them with recovering both the Sorceror and his secret. There is no lack of victims for the 3 high-faluting, stylish villains as they pursue their prey to 19th century Paris, and the very young puppeteer, Andre Toulon. Toulon runs a puppet theatre in the heart of Paris, and meets the sorcerer (the mysterious Afzel) when he is found by the lovely Swiss Ambassador's daughter Ilsa, after being nearly killed. It is there and then that we find the seed of things to come, and the origin of the Puppetmaster series of tales.

The Pupppet Master DVD Boxset also comes with a Bonus DVD, a FULL MOON 45 Title Trailer Reel. This a NTSC DVD Box Set. Is a Limited Collector's Edition. 5 out of 5 stars The Ultimate Collection for Puppet Master Fans.......2006-10-04

Forget that the movies have no coherent flow to them and come up with the most over the top cheesy dialogue. Forget that this entire series, had it started with Part Three would have been much bigger than it ended up being. Forget the last few movies which had really little to do with the overall storyline and forget that in Part Two somehow Andre Toulon, resurrected from the dead, is a creep rather than the hero the rest of the movies make him out to be.

If you are a fan of this series I am talking to you.

Get this boxset!

There's probably not a whole lot of appeal to those who might just casually like the series but for the people like myself who in particular find the first Five movies in the series worthwhile you'll want to get it just for the behind the scenes video magazine clips alone. I found the genesis of the puppets and how they were built and used to be fascinating. I found Full Moon and Charles Band to be very inviting as if being a fan of their movies made you a part of their team.

And then there's the movies. There they are in all of their glory without having to dig around for old rental video cassettes. This is an OOP collection so while you might pay $130-200 for the set it ends up being worth it. You can find the later movies on disc alone but it is worth it to buy them all. The 45 trailer reel is a nice bonus and gives you a feel of the work Full Moon was up to and if nothing else is good for quite a few laughs as many of the movies were preposterous and silly.

All in all this being OOP makes this a collector's item for any Puppet Master fan and the videozine's make the DVDs worth the watch even if some of the movies have slightly more dubious plots than others.

3 out of 5 stars The "Puppet Master II" DVD brings this set down.......2006-09-13

The Puppet Master movies have never been considered high art by any means but they can be very entertaining in the nice B-Movie vein. What makes the series so likeable is the unique puppet characters and nifty effects. Sure the series starts to take a nose dive towards the end (with "Curse of the.." and "Retro...") but again what franchise doesn't? Charles Band's (a well known name in the world of low budget horror and science fiction) Full Moon Entertainment always releases their films with eye catching cover art and plenty of behind-the-scenes footage. Full Moon always seemed to be taking the consumers and fans in the highest regard when it came to VHS. Now let see how they treated the fans for the now ultra rare box set of the Puppet Master series.

The Box set at first glance seems like a well done job. We get all 7 Puppet Master movies housed in a nice box with a bonus disc called "45 Trailer Reel". All the movies contain their original box art (Except the box to Puppet Master has the title changed to "Puppet Master I" making me wonder if Full Moon thought their fans were morons) but the printing on the inserts isn't the highest quality. This is easily forgiven. All the DVDs contain amazing menu designs that are all animated and are like little cartoons themselves. Every DVD also contains the original behind the scenes "Videozone" as well as cast and crew bios so the extras were good.

The picture quality for the most part is on par with other Full Moon releases. Overall the digital transfer isn't great and is sub-par to other big name film companies such as MGM and Warner Bros. Still the films are far from unwatchable. The only film that didn't make the grade when it came to picture quality was Puppet Master II. The picture quality on this DVD is pathetic and worse than its VHS counterpart. The film has moments when the picture even goes digital. It hits its ultimate low when towards the end of the film the picture gets an annoying wavy effect traveling down the screen. I can't believe Full Moon released this movie with such a terrible transfer. It's a shame because every box set that was made has this terrible version of Puppet Master II with the wavy picture. (whats even more strange is the "stock footage" from Puppet Master II that was edited into Curse of the Puppet Master also contains the wavy effect).

Other than the Puppet Master II DVD, this box set is a great way to get all the Puppet Master movies in one place. There's not much for new for extras as the Videozone's were previously released on the VHS tapes but its still great to have them. The box set would garner a 4 rating if it weren't for the sub-par treatment of the Puppet Master II DVD. Hopefully if Full Moon ever gets the rights issues resolved with Paramount Pictures they will re-release the box set and fix the problem with the Puppet Master II transfer.

5 out of 5 stars These are awesome movies!!!!!.......2006-06-07

If you are a true horror movie fan, you don't only appreciate the high budget, really good horror films, you also appreciate the cheesy, low budget, not as scary films as well. The Puppet Master movies are cheesy as hell, but they are great because of that!!! Any true Horror fan would know what i mean!!!!

3 out of 5 stars Good Old Fashioned B Movie Sci-fi.......2007-09-05

If you like decent special effects, but not too good, and end of the world alien invasion stuff with an improbable, almost comical ending, this is for you! Sutherland is great in it, and probably without him, the movie would have stunk to high heaven.

5 out of 5 stars Not a bad movie........2007-02-23

I'm a huge sci-fi fan, most movies are either too weird, too cerebral or not smart enough for me. I'm kinda picky. But this one's just right. It's not the best sci-fi in the world, but it's done well enough to make my ownership list.

3 out of 5 stars Not Great, But Not That Bad Either: Entertaining! .......2006-10-11

Robert Heinlein's "Puppet Masters" is not that bad a film. On the other hand, it is not that great either. It will appeal to certain people, but not everyone. I happen to think the movie could and should have been better. However, the film is saved by an interesting cast: In particular (Donald Sutherland) which does make the film interesting. And another thing, the film is entertaining. Sutherland heads a group of clandestine government official's on the lookout for aliens that may be a threat to the country. They find one such very formidable alien in the midwestern U.S.

When a parasitic alien organism lands on Earth and begin to inhabit the bodies of human's in a small Iowa town, Sutherland and his agents move into action. The film deviates from what could have been a very good film, however, when a scientist (Julie Warner) and one of the agents (Eric Thal) become exposed to the parasites. Keith David [a commando and agent with this secret agency] does play his part well, however, it is not enough to save the film. Even Donald Sutherland's portrayal as the hard nosed father of Eric Thal does a good acting job. I think you will be entertained with the film. It is not that bad. If however you are looking for perfection, look elsewhere. Recommended with caution. Rent it, I own it. [Stars: 3.5]

4 out of 5 stars "Say goodbye to your son, Andrew.".......2006-05-26

It's probably worthwhile to mention that I have not had an opportunity to read the source material, in this case a novel by Robert A. Heinlein published in the early 1950s, that the film The Puppet Masters (1994) was based on, so I can't speak towards what made it into the movie and what didn't...co-written by Ted Elliott, Terry Rossio (both of whom worked on films like Small Soldiers, Shrek, and Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl), and David S. Goyer (Dark City, Blade, Batman Begins) and directed by Stuart Orme, the film stars Donald Sutherland (Animal House, Space Cowboys, Cold Mountain), Eric Thal (A Stranger Among Us, Six Degrees of Separation), and Julie Warner (Doc Hollywood, Tommy Boy). Also appearing is Keith David (They Live, The Quick and the Dead), Will Patton (Armageddon, Remember the Titans), Richard Belzer ("Homicide: Life on the Street"), and Yaphet Kotto (Truck Turner, Alien).

The film begins as we witness a strange phenomenon in the sky in a small, midwestern town, drawing the attention of a number of slack jawed yokels. Shortly afterwards some gooberment people show up, namely Andrew Nivens (Sutherland), head of a secret agency called the Office of Scientific Intelligence, his son Sam Nivens (Thal), an agent of the aforementioned group, Dr. Mary Sefton, an exobiologist on loan from NASA, and some scrub agent played by Belzer. The cursory investigation turns up some interesting things, the main thing being that people in Iowa seem especially strong and exhibit violent tendencies. Well, it turns out some wee, flat, cartilaginous, fish-like, intelligent, parasitic aliens have come to our little corner of the universe, latching onto the backs of humans, giving them complete control over the actions of their hosts. The trio manages to capture one of the buggers and return with it to Washington for further investigation. The big question now seems to be exactly what do these visitors want? Now I'm no rocket scientist, but I'd guess it would be something along the lines of planetary conquest...and sure enough, various plans come to light, one involving an attempt on `assimilating' the big cheese hisself (I'm speaking of the President of these here United States). As Mary and her team work desperately to better understand the creatures (and uncover exploitable weaknesses), the gooberment deploys the army to contain the sinister invasion, but these efforts are in vain as the aliens seem to be multiplying at an exponential rate, eventually taking over the great metropolis that is Des Moines, Iowa...quoting a line from another film (specifically 1986 feature Aliens), "I say we take off and nuke the entire site from orbit"...ultimately events occur, someone within the group is `taken', and a rescue is attempted as agents try to infiltrate the hive. Is the human race destined to become soulless automaton hosts for mini-stingrays from outer space? Perhaps, but would that really be so bad? I mean think about it...how swell it would be to have something else making all your decisions for you, alleviating you of all responsibility? Freewill is over-rated anyhow...I say acquiesce to your slimy, alien masters and enjoy the ride...

As I've said, I haven't read the original source material for this film, so I can't say what was kept and what was changed, but I did enjoy this movie. It starts quick out of the gate and maintains a brisk pace throughout, keeping its focus well. I thought most all the performers did well and I appreciated the chemistry, especially between Thal and Warner's characters. I will say their burgeoning relationship seemed to come on a bit quick, but given their relative appeal, it wasn't completely unbelievable that they should have the primal desire to shag each other. I was slightly disappointed that Warner's character devolved a little as the film carried on, appearing less of a character and more of a classic, sci-fi stereotype (the female in distress needing rescuing), but she does gain some strength again near the end. I really like Sutherland's character, a suave, no nonsense, intelligent, and pragmatic individual willing to sacrifice much in the line of duty. Thal did well in the role of Sam, a character who seemed to get the beating about once every ten minutes throughout the film (the aliens, in controlling their hosts, also imbued them chemically with strength beyond that of normal). If he wasn't getting slapped around or kicked in the head, he was being thrown down the stairs...he did manage to get in a few good licks, though, along with showing us the splendor of his nekkid hindquarters, which I really didn't need to see (I'm sure many a female viewer appreciated it), but whatever. It would have been nice to see a little skin from Ms. Warner if only to offset the visual of a nekkid Eric Thal, but if you want that, you'll have to catch it in one of her other films, a feature titled Doc Hollywood (1991). My favorite scene occurs near the end, as we see our protagonists racing to catch a helicopter, trying to stay ahead of some alien controlled hosts intent on doing them great, bodily harm...as the helicopter, which landed on a rooftop, begins to move off the roof, one doofus makes a leaping effort to grab onto the landing gear, missing it by a mile...it just seemed funny seeing this valiant effort fail miserably, as if the alien completely underestimated its hosts abilities, and paid the ultimate price. I thought the parasitic creatures looked pretty cool, although I didn't understand why in various scenes people were asked to take their shirts off so that the unaffected humans could see if there was an alien on their backs (other than a chance to get see people without their shirts on). Given the size of the creatures, one could have easily determined this with a simple pat down. The biggest bone to pick for me was the ending, something another reviewer has already brought up...I don't want to give anything away, but essentially we see everyone relaxing under the belief the threat is over, but it really isn't, which results in a climatic aerial sequence. While exciting, it felt tacked on and unnecessary, adding very little to the overall production other than an over-the-top ending. Oh well, that's Hollywood for you...other than a few aspects, overall I thought this feature, albeit by the numbers, relatively well written and just a whole lot of fun.

The picture, presented in widescreen (2.35:1), enhanced for 16X9 TVs, looks very sharp and clean, and the Dolby Digital Surround Sound audio comes through clearly. There are no special features included, but there are English subtitles.

4 out of 5 stars A Really Great Movie But--.......2006-05-12

A a Heinlein fan, I was so disgusted when Starship Troopers came out since it had almost nothing in common with the book but the name and the most basic of premises. But then along came the Puppet Masters and I was pretty happy with this really great movie despite a few cosmetic changes to make the movie doable without a huge budget; while flying cars might have been kind of cool, not having them didn't make a difference to the spirit of the movie or the book. Nor did I miss seeing a lot of people running around near-naked like in the book.

While the movie is not 100 per cent true to the book, it's still a very good adaptation and any fan of the book would enjoy it nonetheless. My only gripe is with the DVD itself: I had seen this movie on Showtime, and not in the restrictive widescreen format that the DVD has. While this may be great for very large screen TVs, the letter-box format doesn't work for me at all and we consummers should be given the choice to buy wide screen or full screen versions.

And, then too, there are no other special features which would have been nice. So those few matters force me to give this DVD only four stars instead of the five it deserves but it's still pretty good.

2 out of 5 stars Puppet Master - LEGACY.......2004-12-31

Let me sum this up for you in as short a space as possible:

Be FOREWARNED: This is not a full-length movie. It is a regurgitation of the previous REAL installments of the series. I am being generous with 2 stars only for the fact that most of the rest of the original series is either unavailable or very hard to obtain on DVD. It is for this reason alone that you may find it worthwhile to buy this 'story'. Even so, it is not really worth more than 6 bucks new. It can bring back pleasant memories if you have been a casual fan of the series and are willing to check these out on DVD technology. It does however, raise the question as to why the rest of the series has not been released yet or is easily available. The Full Moon trailers advertise other 80's gems such as DOLLS amongst others that should be and have no business not being on DVD...or at least available on here or your average DVD store.

Overall, I would say that if you are an ardent fan of the series, you may spend your time better watching something else. If you dig killer doll/puppet movies from the golden age of 80's horror, and haven't really gotten into this series as much as you wish you could, then pay the least amount for this as possible. I really wish I could say that it can hold you over for widely-released official versions of all the films, but I just can't.

3 out of 5 stars Legacy isn't on par with previous Puppet Master movies.......2004-11-24

Most of the reviews on here seem to be for the original Puppet Master. I agree that the first movie was great fun (I enjoyed the first seven films in the series actually) but this review is for Puppet Master Legacy which is the 8th film in the series.

Part 8 isn't as much fun as the previous films. Puppet Master fans may find themselves dissapointed with Part 8/Legacy because it's a "clip show" that uses clips from the previous 7 films! That's right - 95% of Puppet Master Legacy is flashbacks to previous Pupet Master films! It seems that Charles Band has fallen on hard times. Too bad. I'm a big fan of Band's previous work. I know he has a new one called Dr Moreau's House of Pain but the rest of his recent releases are retreads of previously shot footage. Thus in Puppet Master Legacy we get a few minutes of new footage involving a woman with a gun questioning the adult Peter, from part III, about Andre Toulon's secret and the rest of the film is all stock footage from Puppet Master 1 -7.

The heavy use of flashbacks ALMOST works but ultimately the movie doesn't deliver. Legacy might be OK if you go into it knowing that it's far from a new Puppet Master entry and if you haven't seen the previous Puppet Master films in quite some time. As a "clip show" it's fine but it's not what most fans of the series are looking for. Fans of the series who have seen the previous films many times will more than likely fail to find this entry particularly entertaining since they have seen 95% of this film before. The new cast (all two of em) are fine and there are far worse ways to spend a rainy Saturday afternoon in front of the tube than watching Puppet Master Legacy - but that's the highest praise I can give this one. I've enjoyed the 7 previous Puppet Master films a great deal though - so hell I'll be kind to this one and give it 2 1/2 stars.

Fortunately there's a 9th Puppet Master on the horizon! Sci Fi Channel will be showing Puppet Master vs Demonic Toys in December! We've been waiting forever for this so lets hope it's a good one. Even if it isn't Im perfectly happy with my DVD set of Puppet Master 1 -7 so I can't complain. Thanks for the fun Charles Band! I wish you the best with your future film projects and will be checking out Dr Moreau's House of Pain in the near future.

Keep the faith Puppet-heads! Puppet Master vs Demonic Toys is coming! Meanwhile: Take a look at Puppet Master 1- 7, pop some corn, enjoy a cold drink, kick back, and enjoy!

2 out of 5 stars The End? Sad For So Many Reasons........2004-11-09

You know that feeling you get when your favorite show that's been on for years ends with a clip show? Yeah that sucks doesn't it? "Puppet Master Legacy" takes this idea and applies it in movie form.

The continuity of this series has always been horribly skewed so I was interested to see how they tied everything together. I suppose they did a fairly good job, at least it seems to make sense. Although the explanation as to how Leech Woman died and then showed back up three movies later in perfect condition was still not touched upon. Darn, I was hoping that was at least one loose end they'd tie up!

I understand Full Moon barely had the budget to buy a Big Mac in the later years of thier movies. Heck I'm not even sure they exist anymore! But they at least were still in buisness last year (2003) because they churned out this blasfemous piece of garbage.

I will say that I'm glad the puppets (kind of) got an ending. But I wanted to see them work toward it, not sit passively by while the latest puppet master and some spy chick relived moments from the last seven movies. Not to mention the movie only lasted an hour and ten minutes AND there were no extras on the dvd.

It's sad that such a great francise had to deteriorate completely before it was laid to rest. R.I.P. Puppet Master. At least Full Moon can no longer bastarize your name.

1 out of 5 stars A Huge Disappointment!.......2004-11-07

Do any of these reviews actually refer to "Puppet Master : Legacy"? This was a terrible movie. As a fan of the Puppet Master series, I was greatly disappointed. This is nothing but clips of the old movies loosely strung together as some unidentified spy character tries to learn the Puppet Master's secrets. The movie, if you can call it that, is also a mere one hour and eleven minutes, with no bonus features on the DVD. If anything, this is just an extended promotion for the seven original films. I wish Full Moon would buy back the rights to their original Puppet Master films and release them properly on DVD. This poor hack-job of recycled movie clips is just awful.

Description

The most valuable concept ever attempted in documenting today's Martial Arts renaissance is brought to life in "The Warrior Within". Fifteen top practitioners of Jeet Kune Do, Karate, Kung Fu, Jujitsu, Kendo, Tai Chi Chuan and Classical Oriental Weaponry pay tribute to the Martial Arts Master of all time, Bruce Lee. In addition to exhibiting their deadly skills, the Masters talk honestly about themselves and about their mystical, spiritual and philosophic thoughts on the ancient art of self defense. It is also about their place in a modern society whose escalating crime rate and violence is making the knowledge of self defense a necessity for more and more ordinary people, especially women.

Executive Producer Manuel Ortiz Braschi said that it was made with the purpose of educating the General Public to what the Martial Arts are all about. Viewers will learn how it is an intelligent solution, not only for protection but also for self confidence and peace of mind. It is guaranteed to be a real eye opener into the world of Martial Arts.

"Warrior" received the highest honor a film could be awarded at "Las Americas Film Festival", given to films of unusual merit. It has received great reviews from film critics, newspapers & magazines and is considered by many to be a classic. Martial Arts fans will have the opportunity to see many of their favorites in action. Each is a highly ranked representative of their style and art.

5 out of 5 stars Don't be fooled this is for REAL martial artist with respect and open minds........2007-05-15

First of all let me say that if you are looking for hardcore action, legs breaking, and fancy flips, and gymnastics. This isn't for you. This was made in the 70's so don't be surprised with the crappy picture and sound quality. However with that said, I have always loved this documentary. I first saw it 18 years ago at the age of ten. Once I saw it I joined my first martial arts dojo. And since then took a long hard and exciting journey in the martial arts world. Despite what some critics on here say, these are REAL masters and many are still alive and VERY WELL RESPECTED in the martial arts community. This documentary goes into brief descriptions of different arts such as Karate, Tiger Claw Gung Fu, Tai chi Chuan, Jujitsu and a few others. While interviewing respected masters in those styles. They speak about their personal experiences, views on life, and what it means being a martial arts master. It's a must for any serious martial artist who isn't in it for just hurting people.

2 out of 5 stars The best comedy I've seen in years ! Recommended for a great laugh !!.......2006-02-24

I'm not sure what the other reviewers are talking about. Maybe they are the film distributors as well. I just saw this recently and thought it was one the funniest things I've seen. But the comedy is totally unintentional.

This was made in the 70s and documents nicely the delusional attitude to martial arts the western world had in that period.

The 'enlightenment' aspect of martial arts tied in nicely with the hippie peace, love and understanding ideal, and together with Bruce Lee's all conquering 'Enter the Dragon' bringing in every tough guy wannabe - well how could it not have been huge !

Speaking of Bruce Lee, his brother Robert Lee does some of the music here, adding to the hilarity. He wasn't hired for his talent, and him trying to croon a slow dreamy ballad 'The Warrior Within' will bring a smile to your face every time you watch.

Many of the 'masters' interviewed are inner city african americans, and come across as wannabe enlighten ghetto gangsters. My favourite was the master who would spar 'full on' (which apparently means no contact at all) with his students - while wearing 70s style sunglasses. THAT IS BADASS !!

This doco actually does feature someone talking about the dangers of attackers entering his 'circle of death'. Apparently anyone that enters his circle of death when he's in attack mode is going to get it - even his mother ! But apparently she wouldn't enter, 'because she knows better'. That right there is by far the best part of the movie, and possibly the greatest line ever committed to film.

Also, watch out for the jiu jitsu master who has all his students talk about how graceful his rolling around is despite his large girth. Lots of slow motion shots follow of this large man doing forward rolls.

Some of them have the noble idea that teaching inner city youths their martial arts will help decrease youth violence and gang activity. You can't argue with that idea, although judging from the 1980s it probably didn't work that well.

There is too much comedy gold to list it all here. The only ones that seemed rational were Chuck Norris, Dan Inosanto and Mike Stone - 3 guys who were all actual friends of Bruce Lee and all engaged in fighting with actual contact... Mike Stone openly makes fun of some masters who are full of it.

A DVD anniversary edition would be AWESOME. I'd love to see a 'where are they now?' feature showing all the masters. I wonder if the circle of death expanded or contracted with age ?

In the end its a wonderful time capsule of the martial arts hysteria that took over the world in the early 70s and really continued into the 90s until the Gracie family and mixed martial arts cleared out the rubbish - which was Bruce Lee's goal in the first place...

1 out of 5 stars Rating Manipulation.......2005-04-05

The quality of a product should stand on its own without people manipulating user ratings. Almost all the user ratings are posted by someone anonymous or someone who only posted one time. Plus someone has made numerous multiple postings that are full of praise and little on actual critique. Seems fishy to me.

1 out of 5 stars BORING.......2005-01-08

I just got this DVD, I am re-selling it. What a wast of money. The quality of sound and picture is terrible. The Martial arts demonstration is OK, but not practical as it says. It is not very well organized, and has no focal point of the film. I am like WHAT IS THE POINT? Just a bunch of mixed up corny film to me....very disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars The Warriors Before Us.......2004-04-12

One of the best documentaries ever made about the martial arts. Although the movie is dated, it provides a wonderful commentary about the various Asian martial arts as practice by many different people from different walks of life. Everyone feature is a great martial artist in their own right. Some episodes are extremely interesting to watch and listen such as Ron Taganashi, Chaka Zulu, Fumio Demura, Rabbi Alex Sternberg, Moses Powell, Danny Inosanto, and Moses Powell.

Many different martial arts are featured including Karate, Kung Fu and Ju Jitsu. Life experiences are intertwined with stunning demonstrations. There is a small tribute to Bruce Lee and the only failure in the movie is the little long and dated music inserted in the movie that was performed by his brother Robert Lee (it really dates the movie and one wishes the director may have had the forethought to insert the music in a different spot- like the closing credits).

Today's younger martial artists should see this film to get an understanding of the pioneers of a generation ago who have laid the foundations participation in the arts. Despite some flaws, the movie is still worth five stars, because of its outstanding commentaries by such an array of martial artists and the coherent direction of the film.

PUPPETMASTER He's Cutting A Few Strings. His Death Is The Only Beginning... For no apparent reason, an aged puppetmaster carefully packs away the marionettes of his craft and shoots himself. Those who come to mourn, or defile, his passing little suspect the final performance that's been planned. The Beloved creations left behind have a little life in them and they're not playing for laughs. They may be small, but their appetite for murder is MONSTROUS! Who's pulling the strings?

    Customer Reviews:

2 out of 5 stars good horror movie, with awful fake 3D.......2007-08-04

A marionette maker dies, but his puppets don't... and they have a vengeful, murderous dark side. This is a classic low budget horror movie that works well. Watch it in 2D here or elsewhere (ASIN: B000A8OJOK ), or get the full series boxed set (ASIN: B000FNYXYQ ).

This (2D version) is the first movie in the Full Moon series of Puppet Master films. (No relation to a Donald Sutherland movie by a similar name.) This movie was good enough to launch a long series of sequels, and is a clever premise.

Included is what is advertised as a 3D version -- don't believe it. Most of it looks like a flat image that was just pushed back in depth slightly, but is still flat. Then there's inside-out, broken, eye-strain / nausea inducing imagery that doesn't conform to any definition of 3D that I'd use. The DVD author simply offsets the video by one or two frames in one eye, and on rare occasion (less than 2 percent of the movie, apparently) this produces something that looks somewhat like 3D. The other 98 percent of the time, it just looks like unwatchable poop.

The original filmmakers did not do this 3D conversion. It does not even look like an earnest attempt.

This is a +4 star horror movie, with a -2 star fake-3D assault to the eyes. Hence the 2 star rating.

If you haven't seen Puppet Master and like low budget horror movies (I do), then this DVD is probably worth purchasing (for the 2D version). -- If you like 3D (I do) or think the 3D might be a fun extra, then this is probably NOT the DVD for you, since the 3D is extremely un-3D and a complete waste of money. Saying that this is bad fake 3D, would be a gross understatement.

4 out of 5 stars Dumb, But I Love It!..........2007-08-08

What I like about PUPPET MASTER is what I enjoy about many FULL MOON productions, that being it's weirdness. Here we have killer puppets, but not just some tired old clowns or whatever. These puppets are different! We get Blade w/ his knife and hook combo! Leach Woman and her mouth full of bloodsuckers! Tunneler's drill-head! And Pinhead w/ his super strength! There's also Alex (Paul LeMatt), whose pre-cognitive abilities lead him and his fellow psychics into the hands of the deadly dolls of doom! Oh sure, it's goofy, but it's also fun to watch...

4 out of 5 stars If you meet Ms. Leech, you should insist that she use mouth wash.......2007-06-21

She's perfect...gorgeous face, great figure, porcelain skin, raven hair down her back. She has only one flaw. She has a habit of gagging up thick, mucous-covered leeches while making deep, retching noises. Personally, I'd just think of England and avoid kissing her.

She's Ms. Leech, and the major delight of Puppet Master I is watching her and her other pint-sized companions, Blade, Pinhead, Jester and Tunneler do their stuff. We meet them in the Bodega Bay Inn when a small band of psychics arrive to learn why they seem to be getting strange mind messages from a former colleague, a man named Neil Gallagher. But it turns out Gallagher is dead...we see him in his casket. We also see him sitting in a chair and waltzing wearing white mask. We see him at the head of the table when his friends gather for dinner. Could it be that Gallagher discovered the secret formula an old puppet master named Andre Toulon used to bring life to his puppets? Hmmm. All we know for sure is that 50 years ago, at this very same Bodega Bay Inn, Toulon hid his puppets in a secret compartment, then fired a bullet into his mouth as Nazi agents burst in his room.

And now, in 1989, in the dead of night and in this deserted Inn, Blade, Pinhead, Jester, Tunneler and Ms. Leech seek out the visiting psychics and the Inn's lone maid to slash, smash, strangle, burrow and regurgitate them to death. Only Alex Whitacre and Megan Gallagher, Neil's wife, will survive that night. They find themselves at that same dining table, this time with the bodies of their friends slumped in chairs...and with a live Neil Gallagher maniacally announcing his hideous plot to bring life, not just to puppets, but to corpses.

But what's not to love about murderous little dolls? If a cult film requires a silly but amusing plot, home-spun acting that brings smiles, a stuffed pekinese that shows a lot of talent and death charging at you at ankle level, then Puppet Master is one of the best of the cult films. Among my favorite characters were Irene Miracle as Dana Hadley, a whiskey-swigging voluptuous psychic; Jimmie F. Skaggs as Neil Gallagher, a thin, prancing actor with a face like one of his puppets; Ms. Leech, of course; and Tunneler. When Tunneler goes to work on your face you'll wish you were back in your dentist's chair having a root canal done.

3 out of 5 stars Puppet Master Review.......2007-02-08

Overall, this is rather one of the pathetic B-horror movies of the late '80s along with "Night of the Demons" and, let's not forget, the ouija board film "Witchboard", a film made by Kevin Tenney who also produced "Night of the Demons" and "Witchtrap".
Now, I'm obviously a male and one in his prime when I go into the next topic of this film. The erotic sex scene, played by Kathryn O'Reilly and a male actor that I care nothing for, is incredible. I have to admit that I have never seen a woman so sexually charged in front of a camera. It is obvious that it was all fake just by taking a quick glance at the bedsheets when she is on top of him. But, regardless, I'm sure that most heterosexual men that view this part of the film think one thing: "How come my girl doesn't do me like that?"
Maybe, that could be a cue for women who complain about never getting any from their mates. Well, some of the best tips are actually in these B-horror films. They may have been rediculous regarding acting abilities and authentic appearances of the physical matter. But, the ideas for eroticism are actually more enticing than Playboy or your local Barnes & Noble psychology section of sexuality books.
Anyways, if you're looking for some legitimate scares from a horror film, Puppet Master does not hit the spot unless you're seriously paranoid about dolls coming to life. THEN, maybe there's a shot for a few frights. But, if you are seeking inexpensive ways to induce your lover into more foreplay without the overly explicit material of pornography, B-horror films are an optional source. Some scares, kinky scenes of imagination, and some actors to laugh at and wonder "how the %&*% they got on the set in the first place", then it's a date!

5 out of 5 stars For the Genre, It's Great.......2006-03-18

Low-budget horror movies are often unwatchably bad. A lot of thought and effort went into this one, however. The result is that it's something of a classic in the killer doll/killer puppet genre. Of course, it's meant to be funny, but not in a self-consciourly ironic or over-the-top way. It still has elements of genuine horror. The sequels seemed to get progressively worse, but 2 and 3 aren't bad.

Personally, I liked PMR. I wouldn't say it was the BEST out of the Puppet Master series, but you must understand the fact that the character Toulon is in fact a storyteller...which is what he's doing in this film. When you take the entire series under the light of Toulon telling a story with his wonderful puppet friends, it gives the Puppet Master videos a sort of creepy Captain Kangaroo vibe. It's like Jim Henson came back from the dead to teach us that we shouldn't have made Elmo the star of Sesame Street...
All I can tell you is that watch each Puppet Master movie with a fresh eye. Forget about what you saw in a previous PM movie, and take in the new story line. It's like watching a new Puppet story. Each film is special in its own way, just like Toulon's lovable, mighty puppets!

5 out of 5 stars Retro Puppet Master.......2005-09-19

Movies like this, which don't fall into the big budget release category, are a genre unto themselves. This is not your typical, slick buckets-of-blood Hollywood horror thriller. There's a wonderful sense of intimacy and as one reviewer has noted, real craftsmanship about this rather scarey movie. It has a charm of its own. It also has a memorable film score by John Massari, a wonderful composer who deserves much more critical acclaim. The score is understated and subtle, rather than a lot of overdone, in-your-face movie soundtracks. It draws you in and keeps you riveted; it complements this little gem of a film.

    4 out of 5 stars a dark fairy tale.......2004-11-24

No gore here! It's largely bloodless - but I'm a huge fan of this horror series and I enjoyed Retro Puppet Master. It's "quaint" and I know many Puppet fans and gore-hounds won't like it but the "fairy tale" quality of this one won me over. Guy Rolfe tells the tale of how once upon a time the young Toulon was granted the magic to bring his puppets to life. This is such a charming little movie that some horror fans will love it and others will hate it. I love all types of horror movies (including the bloodier early Puppet Masters) and I *loved* this one.

1 out of 5 stars Bad attempt at revitalizing the saga.......2003-12-24

I personally think the series should have ended at Puppetmaster III. Unfortunately, I'm not the people in charge of the films, so we get things like this.

When it opened up with the aging Toulon (THE puppetmaster, in my opinion) and his friends, I had high hopes. However, he's not here to act he's here to tell a story about his younger days. You see, a long time ago a bunch of white people pretending to be Arabs stole the secret to revitalizing life from Sutek (who, if I remember my Egyptian lore, was banished to another world and has no powers any way). Sutek gets mad and revives three mummies to catch the Egyptian that stole it.

These mummies are perhaps the craziest part of this movie. For one, they annoyingly repeat each other's sentences. For another, they act and look like the Agents from the first Matrix (even with one leader mummy, the "Agent Smith" of the Undead). Also, they're not that scary. They kill you by basically pointing at you. This means no gore and no real excitement. Any way, back to the puppets:

Toulon originally was head of a puppet troupe entertaining the wealthy of 19th century Paris. The Egyptian comes and teaches Toulon the secret of revitalization. This isn't all that great - the mummies come to the theater and kill off all of Toulon's friends looking for the Egyptian. Toulon finds them and puts their souls into the puppets. The mummies come and attack Toulon, but thankfully Toulon has the puppets to help. Actually, the puppets aren't all that great. One of them just kinda nips a mummy in the ankle and then gets kicked away. And that was your fight scene for the entire movie.

Things just kinda happen from there...the love interest gets kidnapped from the Swiss Embassy, Toulon saves her, and then the movie up and ends. Like the reviewer before me said, the film suggests a sequal. Toulon looks to his puppets and says, "that is another story for another day."

All I had to think of was, "NO GOD! NOOOOO!!!"

This film had a lot of potential (leaving those stupid teenagers getting attacked by demons and going back to Toulon's story) but unfortunately it gets marred by bad scripts and acting. I might also add the special affects in this are HORRIBLE. How horrible? In one scene, you can see the hand holding one of the puppets! No I don't mean if you look hard you see a finger, I mean you can actually see a full-fledged, identifiable hand lifting a puppet up! Did the editor want to kill the movie? What would it have cost them to refilm that part? $2? Maybe a quarter?

1 out of 5 stars Glutton for punishment? Check out RETRO PUPPET MASTER........2002-03-25

The Puppet Master series, definitely tired after Part III, drags terribly in this, the seventh installment, less a movie than a commercial for more Puppet Master toys. Basically a prequel, an aged Toulon tells his puppets the story of the origins of his powers and the puppets themselves, introducing a few new puppets and "retro" versions of those we already know.

Fans of the Puppet Master series are a forgiving bunch. As an owner of the box set of all seven films (so far), I must admit that my standards aren't too high when it comes to horror films, especially these Full Moon creations. This time, however, there was no gratifying gore or over-the-top characters (a la BLOOD DOLLS) to make up for the downright terrible acting and lack of action or compelling story. I'm sure the budget for this production was ultra-low, but even the traditionally bad animation of the puppets was especially stilted in this chapter. There are zero scares - and zero blood for that matter. The puppets merely slash at reanimated mummies sent to retrieve Toulon's secret--and they barely manage to scare up some sawdust while dispatching the villains.

The film's ending in itself is a reason to celebrate, save for the fact that yet another sequel is set up with a last line of "that's another story for another time." In the accompanying VideoZone feature, Charles Band assures the viewer that a full line of action figures will be marketed for this film. No kidding. If you're a Puppet Master fan, though, you'll need to own this. There's just something about a film that's so bad as to make it irresistable. In the end, I don't know what's worse: this film or the fact that I know I'll be first in line to buy Part 8 when it's released...and Part 9...and 10...

Andre Toulon's living puppets are back, this time in the possession of Dr. Magrew (George Peck), who runs a house of marvels and is experimenting to create the perfect being, without all the inner conflict and torment of humans. To do so, he recruits a talented young woodcarver named Tank (Josh Green). But Magrew's plans get complicated when his daughter (appealingly played by Emily Harrison) falls for the young man. Fans of the Puppet Master series will probably enjoy this sixth installment. The three leads are well cast, the production design shows some imagination, and the script works--until the abrupt and nonsensical ending. It's as if the last reel were missing, which might explain its actual running time of 78 minutes (not the 90 minutes promised on the case). The puppets also seem less animated than in previous films; nevertheless, they still manage to get their whacks in. Trivia factoid: director "Victoria Sloane" is one of several stage names used by David DeCoteau, who also directed Puppet Masters III and 7. --Geof Miller

2 out of 5 stars What happend to the ending?.......2007-02-05

I was really enjoying this Puppet Master until the very end. What kind of an excuse for an ending was that? As it sucks you in, has you wondering whats going to happen, it's just all of a sudden over and the credits begin to roll.

It's like they ran out of funding for the movie and didn't have any money left to shoot any more cause I cant understand why the heck anyone would just make an ending like that be over before the blink of an eye.

The rest of the film was kinda cheesy. The puppets looked pretty stupid with there only animation being there hands moving up and down like... well, I don't know, like bad puppetearing I guess, almost like they where toys with limited animation that shouldve been playing door bell kind of music as the move.

I liked the plot and the movie up until the last 5 minutes. It just ceased to go on when it was starting to pick up and needed a final scene after what they do show. And I don't get how making a wooden puppet ends up becoming an electronic tank.. i dunno, see the movie to understand what I mean, but if you never see this movie, you haven't missed out on anything special.

Rent it if your curious, otherwise don't bother.

1 out of 5 stars Full Moon pulls a "Roger Corman".......2006-11-05

If you take the Puppet Master series for what it is then it was a fairly strong direct-to-video B-franchise with its first 5 entries. Puppet Master 6 (released under the title Curse of the Puppet Master) however is the major drop of the series and was made when Full Moon Pictures was having some finacial trouble. During this hard time at Full Moon they pumped out really cheap and really lame sequels in their successfull franchises (Subspecies IV and Trancers 6). Curse comes out better than some of their other sequels but it is still a band film

The story is a direct steal from the 1970's horror film Ssssssssss. When have a young simpleton boy taken in by a freindly magician (with a dark secret) and his daughter. The boy and the daughter fall in love but her father has other plans for the boy....to turn him into a living puppet! Oh, the magician also has our lovable killer dolls as pets in cages.

Fans of the series will notice many plot holes, the most noticable one being the return of Ms. Leech who was clearly burned to death in Puppet Master II.

What makes this sequel sink lower is that Full Moon pulls a "Roger Corman" with some of the films footage. What I mean by this is that Full Moon pulls footage from previous Puppet Master films and splices it into this film play as NEW material. This is not flashback type storytelling containing clips from previous films. Roger Corman was notorious for this as he lifted scenese from previous films and spliced it into his new films. An example is the Deathstalker series where each sequel contains footage from the first Deathstalker played off as "new" footage. This is extremely cheap and hackeyed filmmaking that is an insult to fans.

Curse of the Puppet Master may not be the worst of the overlong series (Retro Puppet Master and Puppet Master vs. Demonic Toys take that "prize") but it is close. I personally only own the film because it came in the box set with the rest of the series.

5 out of 5 stars Puppet Master Back on Track!!.......2006-01-04

I'll skip the synopsis since adequate ones are already given. Since this is the most readily available full-length Puppet Master movie, most of you are likely to view this one first. I have to say that this sequel was far better than Parts 4 & 5. If you already are a fan of this series, then you'll likely enjoy this movie since it captures much of the same charm that were in the first 3. The storyline itself is interesting enough for a b-movie, and you really get a sense of who these characters (and the puppets) are. It has all the makings you'll ever need of horror cheese: The lonely old man and his beautiful daughter, a love interest between that daughter and the new 'boy' hired by the father, a town bully who gets his, and a near comical jerk local sheriff.

The main problems I had with the previous two was that the storyline focused mainly on the human characters and lost sight of the puppets. This movie focuses a little more on the people too, but I found this story interesting enough. The dolls do serve an interesting role in this sequel and don't seem to be cut out as much as they were in Part 4. The special effects are of course, on par with the previous two, and does detract from the movie a bit. But I feel that most b-movie, killer doll loving people will enjoy this sequel even if you haven't seen any of the previous ones.

SPOILERS - Only for those that have seen the movie, otherwise scroll to last paragraph

It was nice to see nearly all the puppets back for this one. Since this series has enjoyed going back into the past, it might be interesting to find out exactly what happened between 5 and this one. How did this Magrew find the secret out? Did he need that serum, or were the puppets now officially 'alive'?

I thought that former assistant of Magrew's turned puppet resembled Adrien Brody. Possible early role for him??

I didn't like how the dvd cover to this movie spoils the story. Although I probably would have figured it out anyway, I didn't need to know that the 'doctor' was really a bad guy. This might not have bothered me if they didn't also mention that the dolls were going to turn on him. I sat throughout the whole movie waiting for this to happen and it kinda took a little fun out of it for me.

My final verdict: I would highly recommend, as the featured reviewer states, buying the box set. I made the mistake of buying a set off of ebay for close to $200 - still far cheaper than here. But (as of present time) www.fullmoondirect.com is selling brand new factory sealed sets for about half of that price. Since the rest of the series isn't readily available anywhere else, this is a pretty good deal. As for the single movie, i'd suggest renting it first if you have serious doubts about the series. If you like these kinds of movies, go for the box set. You won't be disappointed.

    4 out of 5 stars PART 6 - A FUN B MOVIE.......2004-11-24

Things were getting tired and cheaper by part 6 of the Puppet Master series but there was still some fun to be had with everybody's favorite murderous puppets! The cast is solid, and there's a nice feeling of mystery to this one, and those lovable killer puppets keep things entertaining and fun for 90% of this flawed flick. Take it for what it is, pop some corn, enjoy a cold beverage, sit back and enjoy.

    2 out of 5 stars OK for a B movie.......2003-12-20

I'm not a Puppet Master guru like some of the other reviewers, but I thought the story line was OK.
    Pro: Emily Harrison is cute.
Con: the ending sucked. It's as if the writer rushed to end the story.
