The sci-fi-themed teen drama Roswell begins its third and final season with Max (Jason Behr) and Liz (Shiri Appleby) back together and taking a desperate chance to find Max's son. After the many cosmic concepts of the previous season, the series dialed back the mythology to focus on the more--excuse the expression--human aspects of the characters. Roswell was often described as Dawson's Creek meets The X-Files, and accordingly Isabel (Katherine Heigl) finds romance with a lawyer (Adam Rodriguez), but struggles both with her mixed feelings about revealing her alien identity and with the aftermath of the tragedy in season 2. (The romance is later spoofed in a Bewitched-style episode.) At the same time, Max and Michael (Brendan Fehr) travel to Los Angeles in search of an alien bounty hunter that might be able to help them find Max's son. (They also find Roswell executive producer Jonathan Frakes making a guest appearance as himself.) Michael takes a night job that at first is played for laughs (in "Michael, the Gang, and the Great Snapple Caper"), then takes on threatening implications in a rousing two-parter that eventually leaves all parties not too much different from how they started. Michael also struggles in his relationship with Maria (Majandra Delfino), first when he makes new friends and later when she meets a figure from her past (Clayne Crawford) who revives a longtime music dream that might lead to bigger things. All the while, the alien trio faces the constant struggle of keeping their identities secret, even as the net seems to be tightening around them. When a key character returns in the series' penultimate episode, both the aliens and the humans they love face a critical decision.

The Dawson's Creek comparison is also valid in an undesirable way: many of the background songs that characterized the series have been replaced for DVD due to licensing expenses. Newcomers to the series, of course, probably won't notice. Four episodes have commentary tracks, two by Frakes, who has some interesting information but leaves dead air and introduces characters we already know. Better are the tracks by executive producer/writer Ronald D. Moore on the Bewitched spoof and by creator Jason Katims on the series finale. Other features are a 13-minute summary of the season and Shiri Appleby's appearance on Japanese TV to publicize the DVD release of the first season in 2004. --David Horiuchi

Description

Having grown up in Roswell with only a few close friends aware of their alien origins, Max, Isabel, and Michael have finally come of age. Uncertain about what lies ahead of them after graduation, they are suddenly forced into action when it becomes clear that the incidents in which they have used their alien powers to help others have finally caught up with them. As the Air Force and FBI close in, the trio realizes that Roswell is no longer the safe haven it once was. As they prepare to leave their friends and families behind, Liz has a shocking vision which makes everyone realize that it is not only the aliens who are in danger but their human friends as well.

5 out of 5 stars Roswell Series.......2007-09-15

This has been my favorite show since I discovered it at age 17! My neighbor at Chapman University and I used to have showings in eachother's dorms when the new episodes came out. I love it not only for it's originality but also for taking what every high school kid goes through (alienation) and turning it literal. Plus it brings be back tomy freshman year of college.

4 out of 5 stars Inconsistant, but good.......2007-09-11

While slow, the first season had a good story arc. It still struggled with "finding itself". By the third season, the characters were well developed, but the episodes got increasingly inconsistent and it became even more clear that the producers and writers had no idea where this thing was heading. The end result is a show that occasionally lurches around, sometimes going wildly off plot, then back again. In spite all those problems, it still a very good show with some brilliant moments.

3 out of 5 stars Roswell The Complete Third Season.......2007-09-01

Not as good as the first two season, I understand now why it went off the air.

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic........2007-08-31

My kids and grandkids love these episodes. We watch them over and over. We have all three seasons.

5 out of 5 stars Scifi gem cancelled too soon.......2007-08-28

This show was brought back twice from the brink of cancellation due to the fans of the show. This show might not have had the popularity of Friends, but its fans were there till the end. The fan base might have been small, but they were mighty. And rightfully so, this show was awesome! From the first episode to the last, the show gave the fans what they wanted. This show blended science fiction with a love story and it worked every time. If you were a real fan of the show, you felt every emotion the characters felt. This show is worth a watch if you like scifi and enjoy a good love story. A cast full of beautiful people, who you come to love even more by the last episode. Thankfully the producers knew it was being cancelled and they were able to wrap it up and not leave the fan hanging. You won't be disappointed.

Season 2 of the cult science-fiction series Roswell opens on a promisingly positive note, with the rescue of alien teen Michael (Brendan Fehr) by Max (Jason Behr) and his pals, but as soon as things settled down, new challenges threaten their existence. That was par for the course on this imaginative program, which hit its stride in its sophomore year (2000-2001) with a tighter blend of thoughtful youth drama and otherworldly action. The season's chief threats to aliens Max, Michael, Isabel (Katherine Heigl of Grey's Anatomy), and newcomer Tess (Emilie De Ravin of Lost), and Earthlings Liz (Shiri Appleby), Maria (Majandra Delfino), and Alex (Colin Hanks) are Vanessa Whitaker (Gretchen Egolf), a congresswoman with a very sinister secret agenda, and Brody Davis (Desmond Askew), the new curator of Roswell's UFO Museum, who harbors an equally unpleasant plan for the friends. The struggle between human and alien forces, both good and evil, to uncover the truth about Max and his companions leads to a pair of shocking events--a death among the group, and in the season finale, Max, Michael, and Isabel's possible return to their home planet. Other highlights from season 2 include the imaginative period piece "Summer of '47," with the series regulars assuming the roles of townspeople and government officials at the time of the original alleged UFO crash; the two-parter "Meet the Dupes" and "Max in the City," which poses the alien quartet against their physically identical doubles (with extremely different personalities); and "A Roswell Christmas Carol," which offers an unsentimental retake on the Dickens story.

As with the first-season set, supplemental features are surprisingly abundant for a relatively minor show; commentary is included on three of the 21 episodes (two by executive producer Ron Moore), while the featurette "Here with Me" has the writers, producers, and cast offering their opinions on the season. There's also another installment of the "Shiri and Majandra Show," with more lighthearted reminiscences from the actresses, as well as two additional featurettes on the program's score and the process of transforming a storyboarded scene into filmed action. A five-minute montage of clips set to music called "A Little Something Extra for the Fans" is the lightest of all the extras (and fans should note that many of the music cues featured in the original broadcasts have been replaced in this set), but Roswell aficionados will undoubtedly be happy with everything they get. --Paul Gaita

4 out of 5 stars Inconsistent, but good.......2007-09-11

As with many shows, the second season is an marked improvement over the first. The actors, directors, producers, writers all have a more clear view of what their doing. Unfortunately, despite all the great fundamental elements of Roswell, the show still struggled in the second season. Plot lines moved a little to slowly and it wasn't clear where they wanted to go with the whole thing. The result is a slightly irritating inconsistent feel to the whole thing. Its still a great show, but it could easily have been better.

I am so glad I got this. I now know what happened on those episodes I missed and the series is even better than I remembered (the cell phones are hilarious). I will have this in my library to loan to others who may never have seen it. I loved the Roswell series and couldn't believe they ended it. I am now getting the 3rd season to have always.

5 out of 5 stars TEENAGE ANGST IS NOT MY THING ---- BUT.......2007-07-09

How the actors have grown since the beginning - they just keep getting better at interprating their characters.

Nasedo lets the Royal Four know that there is another one out to get them.
Tess plays such an innocent with a deep, devious plan of her own. She has to seduce Max.

Liz falls for the subtle jabs at her devotion to Max.
Slowly we are introduced to some alternate Aliens who are dangerous. Alandra, and the guy leading the Harvest -
The End of The World as told by a thirty something Max was excellently done - and really show-cased Jason's acting abilities - of course this just tended to drive Liz into acting like a teen with insecurities.

Of course, Max in the City - was really strange - Michael's counterpart was excellently played along with Isabel's, whose was a total departure from what we were used to seeing.

A Roswell Christmas Carol - you have to see it - it was really great.
The next with Kyle and Alex [Colin Hanks]was light relief.

Viva Las Vegas and "The Prom" reminded me of why I don't like teenagers.
The only part I did like was when Sheriff Velanti red the riot act to the wayward teens. The Prom -- seems to me that the girls [who are still emotionally unstable] put too much importance on a dance.

On the whole the series is most excellent.
Alex's death and the reactions were normal and easy to understand. [I knew it was coming but didn't know it was murder.]
Then there was Brody - where did he come from - was he really possessed by the alien leader Larek?

Loved The Departure -- with Tess leaving by herself [and with Max's child]
MOST EXCELLENT AND HIGHLY RECOMMENDED [also the commentaries and features.]

5 out of 5 stars The series has landed.......2007-06-28

I was so glad that this great tv show received a 2nd season so that i may experience the excitement and drama that happened in Roswell all over again. I loved this shows 1st season and couldn't have been more thrilled about the 2nd season. An extremely original show.

Opening with a Dido theme song and featuring character-driven, sweet-natured melodrama, Roswell was a show with a surprisingly dedicated fandom, who twice won it reprieve from cancellation. One of its main strengths was, of course, the extent to which its premise--alien teenagers trying to sort out their identities while emotionally involved with their human contemporaries--was a free-floating metaphor for race and sexuality issues. Another was the strong ensemble that its cast developed: you believed in the strangeness of the alien trio and the well-intentioned normality of their three human friends. Jason Behr gave the alien Max a quiet authority and Majendra Delfino took the sidekick role of Maria and gave it both intensity and fine comic timing. It was also a show in which you were never sure which adults you could trust--William Sadleir trod a fine line of ambiguity as the local sheriff and Julie Benz was silkily sinister as an FBI agent. Anyone who ever loved this show will want these DVDs--and many others may want to find out what the fuss was about.

Roswell is presented in 1.78:1 anamorphic widescreen. The special features include commentaries on six episodes by writer Jason Katims, the directors, and various cast members as well as a featurette on the making of the show and another on its adaptation from the original Roswell High series of young adult novels. The commentaries are unusually insightful on the casting process, and the discs also include the auditions for the part of Tess as well as a deleted scene and a music video. --Roz Kaveney

4 out of 5 stars A little slow, but good.......2007-09-11

When this show first aired, I thought it was a little slow. My wife loved the show, so I bought it for her. The second time around, I found that the pacing didn't bother me as much, but its still there. Like most first seasons, it also has that definite "finding itself" problem (which, unfortunately, it never really resolved.)

I was amazed at this show. They don't have stupid teenagers but real human beings [and aliens ]. I'm sure I didn't watch it because of the title. It is like watching old friends now. Got my sister hooked and several others. I don't believe I'll ever get tired of it. Just something so different about it. Something always happening and keeps your interest. I now own all the episodes. Just wish there were more. A movie about what they are doing now. Cross between the immortal and the fugitive. The Immortal starring C. George and the fugitive starring D. Jansen. What a great series!

4 out of 5 stars interesting and enjoyable.......2007-07-08

This is a really good series, well done and interesting! The acting is quite credible and the episodes are all very enjoyable. I think that Max and Maria are the two best characters.

I kept telling myself that this amazing tv show has and still is underrated and i can't understand why. This tv show is one of the best sci-fi shows i have ever seen and i would recommend this to anyone who likes a good teen/alien show.

The era of Molly Ringwald's profitable collaboration with writer-producer-director John Hughes (Sixteen Candles, The Breakfast Club) was at its peak with this 1986 film (directed by Howard Deutch but in every sense part of the developing Hughes empire). Ringwald plays a high school girl on the budget side of the tracks, living with her warm and loving father (Harry Dean Stanton) and usually accompanied by her insecure best friend (Jon Cryer). When a wealthy but well-meaning boy (Andrew McCarthy) asks her out, her perspective is overturned and Cryer's character is threatened. As was the case in the mid-'80s, Hughes (who wrote the script and produced the film) brought his special feel for the cross-currents of adolescent life to this story. In its very commercial way, it is an honest, entertaining piece about growing pains. The attractive supporting cast (many of whom are much better known now) does a terrific job, and Ringwald and Cryer have excellent chemistry. --Tom Keogh

Description

Young Andie (Molly Ringwald) is one of the not-so-popular girls in high school. She usually hangs out with her friends Iona (Annie Potts) or Duckie (Jon Cryer). Duckie has always had a crush on her, but now she has met a new guy from school, Blane (Andrew McCarthy). He's one of the rich and popular guys but can the two worlds meet?

5 out of 5 stars John Hughes captures teen angst once again..........2007-09-04

What can I say? Yes, I am 49, was out of HS several years before 'Pretty In Pink' came on the scene. Yet to me, a SUPERB classic. It tells of your typical 'poor girl on wrong side of tracks, meets upper crust boy'...and it shines! Molly Ringwald is exquisite in her roll. McCarthy and Cryer, too, are very real and authentic in their roles.

3 out of 5 stars 2 thumbs up for Molly.......2007-08-04

Molly really shines through on this movie. You just begin to realize how talented she really is. She can be sexy, sultry, emotional and funny.
Her acting is underated and the movie itself is excellent. This movie, as with the Breakfast Club, is an excellent learning lesson for teens.
I recommed this movie highly to all, as time has not diminished the message that this great film sends out.

5 out of 5 stars Pretty in Pink-Great 80s Film.......2007-07-23

Molly Ringwald is awesome in this 80s classic. She is from the wrong side of the tracks and falls in love with someone from the right side. If you enjoy this movie you will alson enjoy Sixteen Canldes.

5 out of 5 stars 80's Classics.......2007-07-23

Now, Molly Ringwald had to be my most favourite actor of the 80's. This story is sweet too. Being an outcast through highschool, Andy (Molly Ringwald), is a budding designer and she makes up all of her clothes, but gets ridiculed by the popular girls. Who doesn't get teased? But Andy likes Blane, a rich kid who has money and hangs out with the popular crowd. Then there is Duckie, Andy's loyal friend who is totally in love with her, and is against Andy wanting to go out with Blane, as he thinks he will break her heart. And there is Stef (James Spader), who wants Andy, but Andy does not want him. So Stef gets to Blane trying to make out that Andy is crazy and that she is not worth dating. But Blane still likes her. They go out on a few dates, and then he pulls away from her and she gets angry. Then the prom comes, and Duckie takes Andy to the prom and tells her that Blane is a nice guy and not like the others. So Blane sees Andy and she is upset. he walks up to her and tell sher that he loves her. Then he walks away. Andy stares after him, and Duckie tells her to go after him. And so ends the movie of them kissing in the carpark.
A great ending that shows no matter what social class you come from, love will always conquer.

4 out of 5 stars Pretty in Pink review.......2007-07-05

If you're an '80s kid like me there's a good chance you're a fan of John Hughes' Pretty in Pink. When watching this special edition DVD it's apparent that this is the Queen of '80s teen movies. With that said, it's still pretty underrated. I'm surprised at how many people still tell me they never watched this movie!

James Spader plays the extreme a-hole and there's no bigger jerk in all of movies! Molly Ringwald is the quintessential '80s girl acting along with some amazing songs in the background. You also have a quirky "She's so Unusual" type performance from Annie Potts (Janine Melnitz from Ghostbusters), an Oscar worthy showing from Andrew Dice Clay, and even a hot Kristy Swanson as Duckette. You can't go wrong with Pretty in Pink, one of the '80s best teen movies.

Nothing dates a movie quite as much as a roller-skating blonde in white shorts and a tube top. Midnight Madness opens with exactly that and quickly follows with a scene in which a student counselor reassures a romantically nervous freshman with the line, "Flynch, you could be a real Burt Reynolds, I know you could." Ah, nostalgia. Made on the cusp of the '80s, after Animal House but before Porky's, Disney's college comedy gained a considerable following, thanks to countless screenings on HBO during the Reagan administration. Like all the best cult movies, it's awful, but compelling nonetheless. This is a film in which all the nerds look alike, the jocks have names such as Armpit, and you get to see fat twins shake their abundant disco booties. The plot revolves around an all-night scavenger hunt, with five teams of competing students racing around Los Angeles solving clues and getting into all sorts of amusing scrapes, including a visit to the Pabst brewery that will have you humming ancient advertising songs for days. David Naughton, who went on to star in An American Werewolf in London, is our hero, but the real fun comes from Stephen Furst as the mean and chubby rich kid and the legendary über-nerd Eddie Deezen as Wesley. Michael J. Fox makes his film debut as Naughton's troubled but feisty kid brother, and the eagle-eyed viewer may even spot Paul Reubens in a tiny role. Being a Disney film that was released before Porky's made shower scenes an integral part of campus comedies, this is a curiously innocent movie--just watch how long it takes the teams to decipher the clue, "Look between the two giant melons." Nevertheless, Midnight Madness is 112 minutes of undemanding, cheesy fun for anyone who remembers the last days of disco. It makes Animal House look like Chekhov, but watch it with a group of friends, and perhaps a little Pabst Blue Ribbon, and you'll have a hoot. --Simon Leake

Description

A genius grad student organizes an all-night treasure hunt in which five rival teams composed of colorful oddballs furiously match wits with one another while trying to locate and decipher various cryptic clues planted ingeniously around Los Angeles.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Dated - butUnderrated.......2007-08-25

Sure, this movie may seem quite dated, but it's nevertheless quite underrated. A highly unique game that takes the players on an all-ight scavenger hunt around the city of Los Angeles, looking for clues that'll propell them forward when solved. The contributers consist of one skinny college genius, two pretty girl accomplices and five teams of students from varying walks of life. Three of the teams may appear stereotyped: the red team compraises four members of an outcast sorority; the white team consists of a quartet of skinny, four-eyed debaters; the green team includes fivefootball gorillas who spend their time off the field creating misery for he other teams. But, these individuals are still genuine at the core.

The core focus of the film's main body is the competition between the blue team and the yellow team. The yellow team's leader, Adam (played by David Naughton) is a highly intelligent, driven and forward-looking college senior who understands the importance of teamwork. The blue team leader, Harold (Stephen Furst) is self-centered, overweight and oblivious to the world around him. While Adam enters the game willingly, Harold is forced headlong into it b his frustrated father. And, while the yellow team is interested in fair play and following directions, Harold's only interest is in winning and going to any extremes to do it.

Interestingly enough, this movie was produced at a pivotal moment in American pop culture. At the start of the game, we witness the red team inhabiting a discoteque, the likes of which had already begun to go out of fashion. Also of note was the use of the Pabst Brewery as a clue location; Pabst Blue Ribbon bear is now produced by the Miller corporation. Another clue location is in an arcade referred to as Pinball City and, as the name would suggest, populated largely by pinball tables. One of few videogames in the place is an actual game called StarFire. This game pointedly draws on the first StarWars film from 1977. In one year's time, there'd be more videogames than anything in most arcades and more money going towards playing them than towards buying music.

In addition, the Walt Disney company and Buena Vista Entertainment made a supposedly calculated move when the movie was packaged, not including the Disney logo, for fear that a PG-rated movie would tarnish their reputation. However, this writer is mildly convinced that the inclusion of Disney packaging might've aided this film's popularity on the strength of notoriety. Six years later, we were given the Disney film flight of the Navigator, and their adult divison, Touchstone Pictures was fully active, producing pictures of its own.

The leading man, (Naughton) is best known for his role in the 1981 comedic horror flick, An American Werewolf in London. It is commonly believed that Naughton was chosen by director John Landis for this role on the heals of his spokesmanship for Dr. Pepper. However, as mentioned before, Naughton's advocary is played by Stephen Furst. Furst is best known for his portrayal of Kent 'Flounder' Dorfman in the Landis film Animal House. This writer is convinced that Landis opted to follow Stephen Furst's caeer path. This would ultimately lead to a screening of Midnight Madness, in which case David Naughton would become clearly visible. The likelihood that John Landis would recruit Naughton American Werewolf on the heels of this film is at least as likely as on the heels of a soft-drink commercial.

(Of corse, it doesn't hurt that one of the jocks is portrayed by Dirk Blocker, whose legendary father Dan Blocker was internationally known for portraying Eric "Hoss" Cartwright on Bonanza. Dirk also made a cameo appearance during Season 1 of Little House on the Prairie. And, his character definiely adds surrealistic levity to the film's main plot. Good-looking guy, too.)

5 out of 5 stars FINALLY...........2006-12-17

I remember watching this movie when I was young and I LOVED IT soo much. But I could never remember the name of the movie; after all these years I finally got to see it again and I still absolutely love it. And now I have it on DVD, I feel so complete!!!

5 out of 5 stars My kids love this video!.......2006-11-05

My little boy who is 8 years old loves this movie. He goes around acting like the characters from the movie! He really likes Harold and keeps watching the movie over and over again hoping for a different ending. He is also convinced that they should make a Midnight Madness 2 and let Harold win the next time! This is a great movie, with a young Michael J. Fox in it, and has no sex or violence and is a very kid friendly movie.

3 out of 5 stars Fagabeefe indeed sir!.......2006-07-19

Midnight Madness starring David Naughton (American Werewolf in London), Stephen Furst (Animal House), Eddie Deezen (default nerd in most 80's media) and a young Michael J. Fox. This film transends bad made-for-TV-80's-teen-comedy and becomes something very wacky and very fun to watch, though it's not strong enough to be a classic.

Basic plot? Genius college student Leon has devised the ultimate gaming experience (he's probably a frustrated GM in a D&D group.) He invites five people (who need to recruit a team) to play the great "All Nighter". The game is basically a scavenger hunt for clues around Los Angeles that lead to a final destination. The first group there wins. Hilarity ensues and the movie just becomes one insane madcap romp moment after the next.

What holds it back from being a classic is that it's just not quite spot on in terms of how the teams solve the clues and who advances fastest, etc. There is a team of jocks that are solving clues (off camera) that there is no way they could figure out while a bunch of smart spazy nerds are always lagging in fourth place.

Among the highlights of the film are Betsy Lynn & Carol Gwynn Thompson, a pair of overweight girls that have the most amazing (yet almost annoying) giggle ever. Just watching them bounce around inthe back of a picup truck, driving scooter bikes, and dancing up a storm at a roller disco are worth the price of admission alone. On top of this you get Michael J. Fox's screen debut as a bratty teen who's always doing someting bad to get his brother's attention. There's also a small cameo from Pee Wee Herman in full pee wee make-up dressed in a cowboy outfit. Oh and did I mention Candy? Well let's just say that the 'C' and 'L' in the word control on her shirt were hiding very provacativly on the sides (ala the Annette reference in Stand By Me.)

All in all this is a pretty fun movie, especially considering it came out of Disney (or did Disney buy the rights afterward?), but not quite what it could be.

5 out of 5 stars Midnight Madness - Do the worm.......2005-11-23

We all saw this film as a GRM group. After a few hours of debating and we figured out where to put the on call calendar, we loved this film. After Scott beat up those mean jocks, he did the worm. Cyndy loved the film while Steve did arts and crafts. Dan wrote a whole rubric on the film. Don't interrupt this staff during the film or the Hall Director will have to get involved. Greg had tears to his eyes, but still approved it for IST. Buy this film.

The mighty-muscled heroes and big-bottomed babes of fantasy artist Frank Frazetta inspired animator Ralph Bakshi (Fritz the Cat, Wizards) to create the swords-and-sorcery epic Fire and Ice. Bakshi uses a technique called rotoscoping, which uses live-action film of actors as the template for animation, allowing him to put realistic action into fantastic environments. The verisimilitude of movement in a cartoon can be startling, but that's about all Fire and Ice has to offer; the wafer-thin story, overwrought characters, and clumsy dialogue are vapid cliches. Of much greater interest are the extras in this two-disc set, including a making-of feature that demonstrates the painstaking process of rotoscoping; enthusiastic commentary from Bakshi, who's a jovial, down-to-earth guy with a thick Brooklyn accent; deliriously fatuous diary notes from one of the actors; and a feature-length documentary called Frazetta: Painting with Fire, which reveals the artist to be more intriguing than any of the barbarians he's famous for. The effusive praise of other fantasy artists and "Frazetta historians" occasionally veers into Spinal Tap territory, but it's fascinating watching Frazetta turn from a 1950s James-Dean-style tough guy into the king of fantasy art. Though his work is often dismissed as adolescent kitsch, the documentary persuasively argues that Frazetta deservedly dominates his corner of the art world. --Bret Fetzer

From The Director Of The Original Animated LORD OF THE RINGS And The Illustrator Of CONAN THE BARBARIAN

It began as a once-in-a-lifetime collaboration between two of the greatest icons of the fantasy genre: Controversial animator Ralph Bakshi (director of FRITZ THE CAT, WIZARDS and the original THE LORD OF THE RINGS) and legendary illustrator Frank Frazetta (creator of the iconic CONAN THE BARBARIAN, VAMPIRELLA and Edgar Rice Burroughs book covers). It became - and remains - one of the most startling animation epics of all time. Now experience a world unlike any ever seen, where savage warriors, horrific monsters and luscious maidens battle for the soul of a civilization in a time of good and evil, pleasure and pain, and FIRE & ICE

This long-unavailable cult favorite has been remastered in High Definition from the original vault materials, remixed in stunning 6.1 DTS-ES and 5.1 Dolby Digital Surround EX, and loaded with exciting Extras.

Disc 2 contains FRAZETTA: PAINTING WITH FIRE, the acclaimed 93 minute documentary that explores the remarkable life and career of the man who changed fantasy art forever.

1 out of 5 stars Teenage nostalgia does not age well........2007-06-26

Fire and Ice (Ralph Bakshi, 1983)

Sometimes I wonder what on earth filmmakers were thinking when they made movies. More often, I wonder what I was thinking when I was enthralled with them. In this case, though, I don't need to do either--when Fire and Ice came out, I was fourteen years old, male, and not terribly experienced with the opposite sex--in other words, I was Ralph Bakshi's exact target audience. Now I'm thirty-eight, married, and have a more encyclopedic knowledge of eighties and nineties exploitation cinema (read: porn) than I'm sure anyone in my family would like to acknowledge; rewatching Fire and Ice these days, I look back and grieve that my fourteen-year-old self had such bad taste. (But then, in 1983, my all-time favorite movie was Deathsport. No, I can't explain it either.)

Fire and Ice, which All-Movie Guide calls "Bakshi's last stab at epic fantasy", concerns two kingdoms, the established human kingdom ruled by fire, and the upstart kingdom of outcasts and half-breeds, the kingdom of Ice. Needless to say, one is wise and good, and the other is twisted and evil. Interestingly, there are a few places in the script where denizens of either kingdom could waver from their one-dimensionality and suddenly bring depth and richness to the script; we're dangling there waiting for Bakshi to drop the apple into our mouths, but of course it's snatched away as quickly as it's offered. Cruel, I tell you. But then, no one's supposed to be paying attention to the script; we're supposed to be too busy, erm, "watching" Tigre (voice of Cynthia Leake), who starts the movie wearing something that looks as if it's supposed to be a diaphanous lavender negligee over a couple of pieces of filmy stuff that pass as underwear. But only for the first third of the movie, after which the negligee-thing goes away. Draw some luscious, and entirely unrealistic, curves, and the audience's collective brain will be interested in nothing else; at least, this seems to have been the thinking behind this production. (Add in a cameo from Batman--and I swear, the character looks like the ancestor of the animated version of Batman from the seventies--and you'll kill off the last few collective brain cells still struggling to recover from the onslaught of Tigre-flesh.)

But the worst part is that, after realizing all this, I still sat through the entire eighty-one minutes this weekend. I'm pretty sure I didn't drool, but there may be some extra gaps in the gray matter I should probably have my doctor take a look at. *

2 out of 5 stars Slow moving rotoscoped animation.......2007-05-26

The storyline for this movie was interesting, but took so long to get moving I started to lose interest. If it was a one-hour movie, it probably would have been more entertaining. The Big Bad Evil Ice Guy is attempting to conquer the Good Guy Fire King, but most of the time is spent with the Fire King's scantily clad, fantasy-proportioned princess running from ape-like soldiers and being rescued over-and-over by a sole-surviving warrior from one of her father/king's tribes. It all wraps up very quickly in the end. If you like Frazzetta, then you'll notice this is a whole movie of his paintings in rotoscoped animation.

4 out of 5 stars Action Packed Fantasy Fun!.......2007-01-03

If you liked Conan the Barbarian or even Thundarr the Barbarian you'll like this movie.

5 out of 5 stars One of my all-time favorites. A real gem of a film........2006-12-01

I highly recommend this title to anyone who likes films in the fantasy genre. Even after all these years I still enjoy watching this film for what could probably be the 100th time. The animation techniques were very innovative for the time. The storyline is compelling and the characters are fascinating. This is one DVD that I am very happy to have been able to get my hands on and I highly recommend it to anyone looking for something unique and special.

5 out of 5 stars Frazetta animated, 'nuff said!.......2006-11-22

He is awesome. Anyone who dobuts the Rotoscope, see this movie.

Know what's cooler? If you are an illustrator/animator, you could do that movie today? (Hopefully something original along those lines)

Just get Poser 5 or higher, a good animation software package (ToonBoom seems to be leading) and work out a storyboard. Then, have the 3D figs act out the basic moves and trace over them, using the computer to extend your art style.

A literal "Animated Movie" would still be a labor of Hercules, but 3-10 minute shorts would be quite doable;-)

It seems to lack something on first viewing--where's the third act, anyway?--but Albert Brooks's Lost in America is one of those movies that people keep quoting to each other long after they've seen it. And no one has come up with a more incisive look at the phenomenon of the '80s yuppie, a figure toward whom Brooks manages to aim both his satire and his sympathy. The bushy-haired, tightly-wound actor plays a well-paid L.A. executive who quits his job in a fit of pique when he fails to land a promotion. Armed with their savings, he and the wife (Julie Hagerty) buy a Winnebago and hit the road; they're going to search for America and find themselves. Right. They get as far as Las Vegas, where Hagerty has a little problem at the gaming tables. Brooks's rant on the concept of "the nest-egg" goes right into the comedy hall of fame, and his scene with a casino manager (Garry Marshall, underplaying beautifully) is a masterpiece of wheedling desperation. Somehow amidst the comedy, Brooks captures the panic beneath the upwardly-mobile go-go American guy, circa 1985. The open road will never be the same. --Robert Horton

5 out of 5 stars Corporate Truth.......2007-07-27

Great Flick !Exposing the raw bone of corporate hierarchy, this movie lays into the notion that the best rise to the top, and that to really make it in the world of top executives, you need to be less talented and less creative.

This movie also has one of my favorite lines; " he's going to tell you how great the future is going to be here, don't believe him, I've seen the future - it's a bald headed man from New York"

5 out of 5 stars fun even if you're not a comedy-lover.......2007-07-09

this movie is hilarious. i am not an easy laugher and most movies that are supposed to be funny just make me roll my eyes. the situation is very easy to relate to--who hasn't dreamed of chucking the corporate life and living more simply? men and women will enjoy it equally. i even sent a dvd to my financial advisor.

4 out of 5 stars Really Funny.......2007-05-08

This movie is laugh out loud funny. The basic plot is that the Albert Brooks character decides to drop out of the rat race with his wife, perfectly played by Julie Haggerty. They liquidate their assets, invest in a Winnebago and plan to live the rest of their lives on the road w/ the cash that they've received in liquidation. To get the adventure started, they make an ill-advised trip through Las Vegas and their plans are soon altered. Cathartic and hilarious. Definitely worth seeing

Puppy Scooby-Do and his four young friends have a knack for getting involved in mysteries ranging from bicycle theft to bank robbery in the A Pup Named Scooby-Do series for television--never mind that Scooby-Doo's gang is barely old enough to enroll in elementary school! As in the Scooby-Doo series, Fred takes an enthusiastic lead with his often far-fetched theories, while Daphne is most concerned about getting messy. Shaggy is laid-back and easily spooked and Velma, though a tyke of few words, exhibits a very busy intellect. Scooby-Do, who bears almost no resemblance to the often-annoying Scrappy-Doo some viewers may be familiar with, performs for Scooby Snacks. These mysteries share a marked similarity with the regular Scooby-Do series, complete with extended chase scenes with slimy ghosts, hidden rooms, and an abundance of creepy monsters. What's unique to the A Pup Named Scooby-Doo series is that the ghosts and monsters are slightly less scary, the clues are more obvious, and Velma walks young viewers through the process of figuring out the identities of the thieves just prior to their revealing. This compilation includes "A Bicycle Built for Boo," "The Sludge Monster from the Earth's Core," "Wanted Cheddar Alive," and "The Schnook Who Took My Comic Book" and features both spoken language and subtitle options in English, French, and Spanish. (Ages 3 to 7) --Tami Horiuchi

In "A Pup Named Scooby Doo," we get a sneak peak at what the meddling teens we all know and love from the original Scooby Doo cartoon series were like when they were younger. Each DVD has four episodes in which Fred, Daphne, Velma, Shaggy and a pup named Scooby Doo solve mysteries as the Scooby Doo Detective Agency.

5 out of 5 stars Highly recommended DVD!.......2006-02-21

My 4 year old daughter loves Scooby Doo. However sometimes it can be too scary for her. That was until she discovered "A Pup Named Scooby Doo". She loves itand could watch it for hours at a time.

2 out of 5 stars not for little kids.......2006-01-02

You would think a Scooby-Do spinoff that has them as little kids would be appropriate for little kids. But Warner Bros. thought differently. They turned Freddie and Daphne into mean kids, added a recurring mean "bully" character, and made all the adults mean (in addition to being crooks, as usual).

Somehow, with the original series, the writers managed to create a permanent money machine and enduring hit while making every character nice. Is that impossible today?

This series is fine for adults who like cartoons but keep it away from your younger kids unless you want to teach them how to be bratty.

For younger children, go with Kipper the Dog, the Wiggles, even Dragon Tales--but avoid this Pup series. It's a dog.

1 out of 5 stars more volumes and not complete seasons yeah!!!.......2005-11-05

more corporate greed ,they know people want complete seasons but they dont care..all these episodes will be realeased in volumes and after that they will be realeased in seasons just so they can milk you for every dime you have.they did the same thing with scooby doo where are you and the biggest joke was the twilight zone which had 43 ..thats right freakin 43 volumes and then after that they realease complete seasons..i think i'll pass on these volumes for now F-U-W-B

4 out of 5 stars One of my fave Scooby incarnations.......2005-10-05

The 80s were a goldmine decade of great animated shows. Stuff we got in those ten years we just don't see any more. Quite literally. I don't think we'll ever see Denver the Last Dinosaur or Centurions on DVD. One of the forgotten shows among dozens of others was A Pup Named Scooby-Doo. The Scooby-Doo franchise suffered a heavy blow in the 80s when some silly man wearing a suit thought it would be a good idea to introduce Scrappy-Doo, a highly irritating doggy who never kept his mouth shut for more than two seconds. Freddy and Velma also disappeared for a while and Shaggy, Scooby and Scrappy would go off solving mysteries with just Daphne.

Desperate for a new way to re-invent the franchise, Warner gave us A Pup Named Scooby-Doo, an interesting, if failed attempt.

The show features the Mystery Inc. gang as kids and Scoob as a little puppy. The humor and animation is more offbeat and Looney-Tunes orientated but the mysteries are still substantial and the locations still occasionally Gothic and atmospheric.

Shaggy and Scooby are still voiced by Casey Kasem and Don Messick. Since they are the backbone of the show it's good to have this consistency. The childhood angle also gives us new insight into their background.

Many have criticised this show, claiming it to be aimed at under-tens and that it an embarrassment to the Scooby-Doo franchise. Well, I never found it to be that way. As a Scooby-Doo fan I thought this show was very amusing and I loved the score and songs by John Debney. There should be a soundtrack CD released. It really is a shame it never lasted for longer.

Since there were only 26 episodes made I can't help but be angry at Warner's awful DVD presentation of the show. Since they are releasing loads of their back-catalogue animation in beautifully packaged box sets (Premier Collections/Spotlight Collections/Golden Collections) I find it baffling that A Pup Named Scooby-Doo (a show that would have suited this format well) gets a horrid DVD release with 4 episodes per disc, a crappy snap-case box (we're STILL getting these in 2005!) and no extra features. The 1.33:1 full frame picture and Mono sound are perfectly adequate but, even though the show failed, it still deserves a much better DVD release than the one it got.

Shame on you Warner for neglecting this one instalment of a cash-cow that has generated you billions of dollars.

--Tom Keogh
