For a movie about cloning, it's only appropriate that The 6th Day, starring Arnold Schwarzenegger, is instilled with a strong sense of déjà vu, namely from Arnold's previous "Who am I?" outing, Total Recall. In that movie, Arnold is a normal Joe who discovers that his entire reality has been co-opted by an evil conspiracy, and has to take his life back by force. The same premise applies here for Roger Spottiswoode's clever if overlong sci-fi thriller--Arnold thinks he's a regular guy leading a regular life, until a twist of fate puts him on the lam from a vast conspiracy that's replaced him with a clone. While he's trying to evade the evil genetics corporation--and its trendy, deadly, clone-friendly assassins (who don't care how many times they're killed: there's more where that came from)--his double is snuggling at home with his wife and daughter. And new legislation outlaws the existence of human clones, so somebody's got to go. But who gets to be live and who gets to be the dead Memorex man?

Why does said genetics corporation want to clone people? How does the kindly scientist (Robert Duvall) fit in? What's the mystery behind the slick billionaire (Tony Goldwyn) who runs everything? It's all kind of irrelevant in the end, as long as it provides a chance for Arnold to indulge in some energetic mayhem and explosive action. What distinguishes The 6th Day is its sneaky, humorous--and chilling--look at the near future, taking everyday technological advances and turning them up just a couple notches, envisioning an era with cloned pets, virtual girlfriends, and computers running most everything, from the refrigerator to your car. Arnold is supposed to be a throwback to the "real" world--you can tell because he cherishes his vintage, navigation-system-free Cadillac--but as usual, he just brings his behemoth presence to the role and not much else. Still, he's a friendly enough hero, and he rolls with the punches (literally) all the way through to the end. Too bad the film overstays its welcome by about half an hour--a little shorter and it could have been a breezy sci-fi/action romp. With scene stealers Michael Rooker, Sarah Wynter, and Rod Rowland as the trio of cloned assassins who always come back--again and again. --Mark Englehart

Description

In the not-too-distant future, when cloning plants, pets, and human organs is accepted, a sinister corporation has begun illegally duplicating entire human beings. They mistakenly clone the wrong man; a man who is now the only one with the power to expose their evil. They desperately want to kill him, but he will do anything to reclaim his family and life.

5 out of 5 stars An intelligent sci-fi action movie from your old pal Arnie.......2007-08-10

Adam Gibson is an average guy living in the near-future (2015 according to Schwarzenegger). It's a nice place to live in. Cars can drive themselves, holograms are commonplace, helicopters can turn into jets and pistols fire lasers. But the most important difference is the widespread use of cloning technology. If your pet dies why not get it cloned? It's mind can be uploaded into a computer chip as long as it's still fresh and then downloaded into the cloned body through the eyes. The pet's back, good as new, and nobody could tell the difference. Of course a human mind is supposedly too complex for this procedure and human cloning is illegal anyway. However a corporation is secretly cloning humans as a way to achieve immortality, with the best intentions of course. No one wants to die and a clone is essentially the same person as the original.

This time they've made a bit of a booboo and they've cloned poor Adam Gibson while he's still alive. The poor guy comes home after a long day's work to find that he's already there. And to top it off people are trying to kill him and no matter how many times he kills the assassins they keep coming back. It's up to Adam to get his life back, defeat the bad guys and think of some witty one-liners to say while doing it.

The 6th Day raises some interesting metaphysical questions. If a person's mind can be stored in a computer chip and copied endlessly, is there really such a thing as a soul? Is a clone the same person as the original, considering they have exactly the same personality and memories? Is this really a triumph over death or just a delusion based on downloaded memories?

Some people have complained that this movie shows a very unrealistic portrayal of cloning. It involves an adult-sized fetus which is injected with the DNA of the person being cloned and then left to develop into that person before having the person's mind downloaded into its brain. The scriptwriters seemed to think this wasn't much different from today's cloning which kinda ruins the movie's message a bit but it doesn't really matter. The 6th Day is a great action-packed thriller for lovers of sci-fi and Schwarzenegger.

4 out of 5 stars Better Than Average Schwarzenneger Flick !.......2007-03-14

Really decent effort from the king of the action movie ! Really involved story line...something one might not expect from this genere. I was pleasently surprised by this movie. Definetely one of Arnold's better opus's. It's not as good as End Of Days (Arnold's best in my opinion), but it is at least as good as the Termenator series. Give it a try...You won't be sorry. 4 Stars.

5 out of 5 stars More relevant than ever!.......2007-02-19

6th Day sheds light (as it should do) on the reality and subsequently the threat of cloning. A helicopter pilot in the not-so-distant future finds himself on the run by a powerful clone-producing corporation.
Arnold Schwarzenegger and the rest of the cast have truly outdone themselves with their performances, which are outstanding to say the least! All the actors, without exceptions, give it their 100% and it really shows (the chemistry is AMAZING)! Very well written and very well presented, the movie is without a doubt guaranteed to provide more than just a few thrills.
The setting, the plot, the dialogues, and the music are all wonderful!
Similarly to movies like Outbreak, The Day After Tomorrow, The Island, The Lord of War, and Blood Diamond to name a few, 6th Day draws attention to some pretty important issues facing humanity.
In short, 6th Day is a movie definitely worth watching and one to seriously consider adding to your movie collection!

MOVIE ***1/2
EXTRAS BUMP OVERALL RATING UP TO ****

This 2-disc set of the Roger Spottiswoode-directed sci-fi/action flick THE 6TH DAY replaces the lame original bare-bones edition.

Arnold gets a pretty bad rap nowadays (what doesn't from the 80's??), but this is a pretty good flick with great special effects and directed nicely from Roger Spottiswoode (who also did Tomorrow Never Dies). Canadian-born Spottiswoode broke onto the scene in 1980 with one of my all-time favorite horror flicks: Terror Train. Since then he's directed many solid, but average flicks like Shoot To Kill, Turner & Hooch and Air America (to name a few). He does a great job here mixing action, special effects, a loaded cast, and not just one Arnold...but TWO Arnolds! He definitely took some cues from Paul Verhoeven with the futuristic commercials, and 3-d ads sprinkled throughout these 123 minutes. Fans of Robocop, Starship Troopers and more specifically Total Recall should certainly not be disappointed.

He has a lot to work with as the cast is filled with very solid actors. Michael Rapaport (True Romance), Tony Goldwyn (The Pelican Brief), Michael Rooker (Days Of Thunder) and Robert Duvall (too many flicks to pick one-a Hollywood LEGEND) all play key roles. I don't even need to mention Arnold as his resume is well known (read: provides great action, but his delivery...), plus, there's TWO Arnolds to contend with here as he's been illegally cloned (some scenes kinda remind me of Marty McFly's in BTTF2).

The story is about the philosophical ramifications of cloning. How it affects ourselves, the ones we love, and the ones we don't even know. It's played from both angles; one, the tender angle to keep the ones we love (and ourselves) alive for as long as we can, and the other angle of deceit and manipulation as forced upon us by government, corporations, etc. This makes for an interesting debate issue (albeit, not a new one), and since the movie debuted in 2000, the cloning issue has somewhat dissipated.

There's a whole second disc of extras and this is really a great-looking, great-sounding overall package. 9 featurettes, Showtime special, storyboard comparisons and animatics, RePet infomercials & TV spot, trailers, filmographies, and a nice DVD-ROM section.

In short, if you like futuristic sci-fi and action flicks and can handle two Arnolds (much better than handling two Van Dammes!) then this one's highly recommended for a rental and if you find it cheap: definitely pick it up for purchase.

I ordered this box set and both movies are advertised as being widescreen. THIS IS NOT NECESSARILY THE CASE! I received my copy and the 6th Day was widescreen. The Last Action hero was in Pan and Scan. This is crap. Buyer beware. The back of the keepsake box even showed both movies as being widescreen.

3 out of 5 stars I really enjoyed it, but then I'm weird.......2005-01-06

I thought this movie was a lot of fun. I enjoy action flicks, though I started to become a bit disenchanted with them because they were so predictable and unrealistic. I think that's what was so good about this movie. It made fun of action flicks while being an action flick. Sadly, I've found that most of my friends didn't care for the movie as much as I did. But I thought it was fun.

          The One
The One sets a martial arts milestone by pitting action star Jet Li against his greatest enemy: himself. This sci-fi thriller establishes a "multiverse" consisting of countless parallel universes, each populated by variants of every individual. Li plays a renegade from the Multiverse Agency, illegally traveling through "quantum tunnels" to eliminate all versions of himself until only two remain, each sharing the cumulative strength of their "parallel universe versions." This mumbo-jumbo inspires a variety of dazzling special effects, and director James Wong (with cowriter and fellow X-Files alumnus Glen Morgan) injects clever humor into the Matrix-derivative premise. Carla Gugino is wasted as the "good" Li's obligatory love interest, but The One will appeal to action fans with its fast-paced pursuit between the evil Li and two agents (Delroy Lindo, Jason Statham) assigned to stop his trans-universal killing spree. It's a one-gimmick movie, best enjoyed with your brain in neutral. --Jeff Shannon

          The 6th Day
For a movie about cloning, it's only appropriate that The 6th Day, starring Arnold Schwarzenegger, is instilled with a strong sense of déjà vu, namely from Arnold's previous "Who am I?" outing, Total Recall.

            Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars WOW DANG ONE OF THE BEST TV DVD-MOVE FOR SHORE EVER DONE.......2007-05-08

NOW I COULD EASYLY SAY THIS WILL GO DOWN AS ONE OF THE GRATEST MOVE EVER MADE IN THE WORLD THAT IS SO FOR SHORE & THAT IS PUTTING IT LIGHTLY

4 out of 5 stars IF YOU LIKE ARNOLD AND PAUL VERHOEVEN FLICKS...YOU'LL DIG THIS ONE.......2006-12-26
