The surprising truth about Disney's 1982 computer-game fantasy is that it's still visually impressive (though technologically quaint by later high-definition standards) and a lot of fun. It's about a computer wizard named Flynn (Jeff Bridges) who is digitally broken down into a data stream by a villainous software pirate (David Warner) and reconstituted into the internal, 3-D graphical world of computers. It is there, in the blazingly colorful, geometrically intense landscapes of cyberspace, that Flynn joins forces with Tron (Bruce Boxleitner) to outmaneuver the Master Control program that holds them captive in the equivalent of a gigantic, infinitely challenging computer game. Disney's wizards used a variety of cinematic techniques and early-'80s state-of-the-art computer-generated graphics to accomplish their dynamic visual goals, and the result was a milestone in cyberentertainment, catering to technogeeks while providing a dazzling adventure for hackers and nonhackers alike. Appearing just in time to celebrate the nascent cyberpunk movement in science fiction, Tron received a decidedly mixed reaction when originally released, but has since become a high-tech favorite and a landmark in special effects, with a loyal following of fans. DVD is a perfect format for the movie's neon-glow color scheme, and the musical score by synthesizer pioneer Wendy Carlos is faithfully preserved on the digitally remastered soundtrack. --Jeff Shannon

I held off on watching this icon product until my wife would watch it with me since it was before her time. I just placed the disk in (carefully) out of the box into my player and took off. Short story, it skipped repeatedly until I just stopped it and walked off. Turned out the back side was soiled and difficult to clean. I've not tried to watch again.

5 out of 5 stars From elecTRON comes forth TRON!.......2007-08-15

"The Last Starfighter" was the first film to really introduce the new CGI computer graphics in 1984; but before that movie, came Tron.

The charm of this film goes without saying. The music score was done by the rock group "Journey" adding a lifting spiritual ambiance to the great costuming and early computer graphics. The premise of this story follows revelations found in Hindu, Buddhist and Christian teachings. The concept deals with the Universe existing inside the God of the Creation who is both Creator and creation.

This Universe within a Universe is made only all to clear as you enter the world of Kevin Flynn, played by Jeff Bridges. Kevin, who should be key executive of the company he works for, had his greatest electronic games stolen by one of the company's partners, played by David Warner. Kevin must find the evidence inside the computer, if he is to redeem his true status in life. However, he takes a bad turn one night with the MCP who transports him into the world Kevin Flynn helped create, as the MCP turns Kevin, a human, into a computer program.

In the end, Kevin plays a Messiah type figure, who takes on the MCP by sacrificing himself to the MCP to free the system from its evil and make the system a free system in the end. How he reaches his destiny, which also returns him to the real world with the evidence he needs to regain his throne in the corporation, makes for great fun and entertainment as the story unfolds.

Since he has "Christ like" powers as a "user" or "creator" of the system, while in the system; he is even able to "raise the dead" when it comes to one program in particular he falls in love with. He's also able to do things, we only dream about in the real world, in his new environment. It's a cute film to watch and very uplifting once you see the premise it was written from. Great for the whole family.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent "old school" FX film.......2007-08-08

I was 11 years old when I first saw Tron at the theater. Wow! The big screen was definitely the way to go.

Back in 1982, this movie was THE cutting edge in special effects. Nothing else like it had ever been done before. I beleive that most of the naysayers of this film are of a younger generation that grew up watching movies where CGI effects were the norm rather than revolutionary.

Also, the "computer age" was just beginning to emerge from the hands of scientists and big corporations and into the hands of the common man. If you were around back then and old enough to understand what was going on, it was an exciting and scary time. No one really knew what was going to happen in our new "computerized" society, so there was a bit of apprehension and even a bit of paranoia when it came to these big, bulky machines that people were shelling out thousands of dollars for and setting them up in their living rooms and dens.

Tron addresses that apprehension and fear of the future. Of course, computers today are not scary at all and most people give no more thought to using their PC than one would give any extra thought to using a telephone or television. In that respect, Tron may seem dated and silly, but if you remember the computer revolution of the early '80s, Tron was a timely allegory of man's fear of losing control of his life to technology.

Ok. Enough of that.

This is a great DVD packed with LOADS of special features. I especially appreciated the "roots" of Tron and how the characters and ideas developed (as well as the special effects).

Give this movie a try if you're into early '80s nostalgia or if you're curious as to what the common man's outlook was like 25 years ago in regards to the future and technology.

Starring Bruce Boxlightner, this movie is now considered a sci-fi classic. It's great entertainment and has a breakthru story for the time period. I think everyone should see it at least once. Features stunning backdrops and sound. I was the first time, I saw it 25 years ago. It's destined to become a legend. Enjoy!

5 out of 5 stars A great movie, though I do have a couple of pet peeves.......2007-07-15

Another perfect example of why today's over-engineered cgi flops look stupid when you compare it to this classic. Most of the scenes are amazing, and flow real well, but there's that occassional misstep. They're easily forgivable, and the grand vision of the movie really makes one think.

3 out of 5 stars The Movie is Great, but the Extras are Nil........2005-07-08

I can understand the draw of having a UMD movie. It's portable, the movie picture is better than anything you can transfer through a DVD ripper, and if you get tired of watching movies you still have a PSP to play games with.

I biggest complaint is that Sony and Buena Vista could have really pushed the capabilities of what the PSP could be: a portable entertainment device. The movie transfer was great. I love the fact that I could watch Tron on the go. But, the UMD should have had enough space for an arcade copy of Tron on the disk. Most arcade programming from that time can fit on a floppy. The biggest problem with DVD "games" is that you have to use the remote to play. The PSP is a gaming device! The only real extra they put on the UMD was a featurette. Those sort of slim pickings haven't been around since The Matrix pushed what dvds could really do. They could have at least put the light bike race as a game with some enhanced graphics as an extra. In all, 5 for the Movie, 0 for the extras.

4 out of 5 stars Alice oops Flynn in wonderland.......2005-05-23

What would computers appeared like to the uninitiated, 20 plus years ago? Even as we watch this remake of Alice every one knows that computers were getting smaller even then. But this is a fun romp with love and loyalty, and now with time campiness.
The nasty old MPC (Master Control Program) wants to rule the world vis-à-vis remove human contamination or at the least play like "Colossus: The Forbin Project" (1970). Only the "Users" (a loose term invented by the moviemakers for programmers) can defeat him. Flynn (Jeff Bridges) and a hand full of loyal programs including Tron (Bruce Boxleitner) will attempt to do so running into many quasi computer parts along the way. Will they succeed or will their side issue with the lovely Yori (Cindy Morgan) sidetrack them from their mission.
Jeff Bridges looked cute in those days and David Warner (Master Control Program Voice) had just enough touch of evil for a Disney picture.
