Despite a likable cast of humans, it's the canine stars who steal the show in Eight Below, a terrific live-action adventure in the time-honored Disney tradition. Based on a true story that was previously filmed (much differently) as the 1983 Japanese hit Antarctica, this above-average family film takes place in 1993 and focuses on a dog-sled guide at an Antarctic research station (Paul Walker) who is forced by a severe storm to abandon eight beloved sled dogs for the duration of a harsh Antarctic winter. Left to fend for themselves, the rugged and resourceful dogs encounter danger at every turn, surviving for nearly six months while Walker and his closest colleagues (engagingly played by Bruce Greenwood, Moon Bloodgood, and American Pie's Jason Biggs) join forces to mount a daring rescue mission. Having endured similarly extreme conditions on his 1993 film Alive, director Frank Marshall brings an abundance of natural splendor (and minimum use of digital wizardry) to spectacularly arctic locations in Norway, Greenland and Canada, and Walker (star of The Fast and the Furious) lends an amiable sincerity to his compassionate role. For most viewers, however, it's the remarkable dogs (six Siberian huskies and two malamutes) who make Eight Below so thoroughly entertaining. It's not quite an instant family classic, but it comes pretty doggone close. --Jeff Shannon

3 out of 5 stars If you're an adult, you'll want to see the original.......2007-09-02

Although this is a wonderful movie for kids (kind of like Bambi was), if you're an adult and want the REAL STORY of what happened to these dogs - you'll want to see the original version. Warning: if you watch it you better bring a lot of kleenex because a lot more than a couple of dogs died. The original version was called "Antartica" and was filmed by a Japanese filmmaker named Koreyoshi Kurahara and starring Ken Takakura.

Antarctica. Most of the movie, especially the narrative, is in English. The soundtrack is an absolute masterpiece and is worth buying just on its own. The movie was a cult classic in Japan (similar to Rocky Horror Picture show). It was (unlike this movie) really filmed in Antartica, and although some of the dialogue is somewhat like a kung fu movie - it will make an impression on you you'll never forget. You'll see what sled dogs really went through in those days, and you'll ache from the sadness. Definitely not for young kids to watch.
The true story is the masterpiece. If you can find it. It took me over a year to find a copy of the movie, but it has shown up again on Amazon. It is only in VHS format. Good luck!

4 out of 5 stars If you love dogs, you'll love this movie!.......2007-08-25

I gave this movie only 4 stars because it's a little dull for the first few minutes. But over all, this has become one of my all-time favorites. By the time the group arrives at Antarctica, there's not one dull moment at all. I was very impressed by the 8 sled dogs, their intelligence, their understanding of what was going on around them and what was required of them in an emergency situation, and their obvious love for their "boss", and FOR EACH OTHER. Really. This is a very touching story, & it's based on a true event. At the end, I was weeping for excitement and relief. And it does offer English sub-titles!

You can't go wrong with this movie. I highly recommend it. And oh yes, the humans in the show do a great believeable job in their roles too.

4 out of 5 stars My thoughts.......2007-08-06

It's an ok movie , I mean it came from Disney , I'm selling my copy in the marketplace , bottom line , I liked it , but I wouldn't watch in more than once or twice .

5 out of 5 stars A Man, His Dogs, and So Much More.......2007-07-31

Some reviewers (one in particular) are bothered that Eight Below isn't more accurate because it was inspired by true events. There is a difference between a movie intended to document actual events (aka, a "Documentary") and a Disney movie which was "inspired" by true events. An inspiration is just that--an inspiration--meant to provide motivation to do something. In this case, the inspiration motivated Disney to produce a wonderful movie about love, devotion, struggle, regret, redemption, and a host of other emotions you will surely recognize and experience while watching this movie.

Moreover, Disney never claimed that this movie is a documentary, which gave them literary license to write it however they saw fit. Even if that meant using eight dogs instead of seven (the horror of it all); or filming it in the daylight so us viewers could actually see the characters and not have to use our imagination to guess what they were doing in the darkness.

Sure a movie is more poignant when it is based on a true story. But it doesn't have to be an exact duplicate of the true story in order to derive equal meaning from it. The poignancy of this movie is how strong love exists between man and animal, and between animals themselves. In this movie, just like in real life, the characters had to make tough decisions based on the circumstances they were in. The best we can do is sometimes all we can do. And, as in real life, sometimes that effort is not enough to produce a happy outcome. But that's life, and that's what this movie is about.

The only dastardly thing I can say about this movie is that I began watching it thinking I was in for a light-hearted treat, having no idea that in so watching I would end up feeling more sadness and elation than I had felt in quite some time from a movie. Watch it, you'll see.

Claustrophobia and bloody mayhem collide in the high-adrenaline horror flick The Descent. Six women (including one who lost her husband and child the year before, and one who harbors a bitter secret) spelunk in an unexplored cavern system that turns out to harbor mysterious, predatory creatures. That sums up the story, but--as with writer-director Neil Marshall's previous low-concept movie, Dog Soldiers--the plot doesn't begin to describe the riveting, stomach-lurching thrills this movie provides. The script affords the relatively unknown cast (led by Shauna Macdonald and Natalie Mendoza, both excellent) just enough room to make their characters distinct and genuine, so that when they're dropped into utmost peril our empathy is engaged as much as our fear. The dynamic direction and editing make the cavern a palpable, physical presence, even before the creepy beasts crawl out of their nooks. This is not a movie for everyone; it is extremely gruesome and will induce panic attacks in anyone with even a mild fear of closed spaces. But for anyone seeking something smarter, faster, and more wrenching than static torture-fests like Saw or Hostel, The Descent will draw you into its unsettling ooze. --Bret Fetzer

4 out of 5 stars WELCOME TO THE DEPTHS OF HELL!!.......2007-09-04

this movie is one of the best. i loved it. it goes to show that what you can't see is what you fear the most, but man even when they do find out what's lurking around down there, it's unexplainable. the creatures are made out to look freakish, good job. a few friends going to have a good time, then they get lost, they panic, the get claustrophobic, and there seems to be no way out. lights running out, supplies is low, but that's the least of their worries. when they scream real loud what they'll be calling is their deaths. it's a fight for survival. the ending was not a happy one, but it isn't always so i thought that closing was a good one. great job with the suspense, the screams, and the gore. nicely done. standing ovation for giving us a tour of the darkest corners of hell with this film.

5 out of 5 stars One word-terrifying.......2007-09-01

Plain and simple, I loved this movie. What Marshall has crafted is easily the type of exuberantly horrific wonderment that can get me yammering about its virtues until the cows come home and the chickens finally discover their roost. Shocking, scary, thrilling and so fantastic it can chill you to the very bone, "The Descent" is a free-fall into fear that simply cannot be missed.
Not since James Cameron burst onto the scene with "The Terminator" has a director crafted as deliriously kinetic a calling card as writer/director Neil Marshall does with his new horrific subterranean adventure "The Descent." Following up his 2002 giddy soldier vs. werewolf movie "Dog Soldiers," the filmmaker has created one of the most deliciously terrifying adventures as any I've seen in years. This is a beautiful movie, a sublimely eerie meditation on why we're all afraid of the dark and an examination of why the deepest fears aren't the ones attacking from the outside, but the ones gurgling up from within.

5 out of 5 stars Not for the claustrophobic.......2007-08-23

Loved this movie! I wish they had kept it with the unknown, unknown. Once the creatures (call them whatever) are shown, it kinda loses it's oomph! Still I loved it.

3 out of 5 stars GRIPPING!!!.......2007-08-22

This is one movie that made me literally jump from my seat several times. It is riveting, scarry, with a touching subplot. It has elements of betrayal and revenge in it as well. The plot is this (without giving too much away): five daredevil females go cave exploring in an unchartered cave and discover, or rather are discovered, by something heretofore unknown.

The women are physically strong, fit, prepared. They are experienced thrill seekers. I like the fact that there are no dumb, helpless female moments. At no time did I find myself rolling my eyes and thinking, "This woman is too stupid to live. Why doesn't she just die already." Throughout the movie I was rooting for each woman's survival. These women are damn tough and they know what they're doing! The actresses are all thoroughly convincing in their roles, especially when the element of fear is introduced. The women's individual reactions is probably the most frightening aspect of all, so convincing do the actresses portray their characters.

The only element of the movie I found disappointing was that Juno's betrayal of Sarah was not more dramatically pronounced. You really have to pay attention to appreciate this twist.

I absolutely LOVE the ending. It is unusual and totally unexpected. The final moments are nothing short of poignant.

If you want to be scared and thoroughly entertained, please watch this movie. You won't be disappointed!

4 out of 5 stars I screamed for once!!.......2007-08-19

Yes, i know what you're thinking. "Another one of those pick em' off on at a time horror flicks..." And it is. But it's more then that. This movie actually made me scream and i'm getting freaked out just writing about it in this dark, dark room. A bloodbath that makes you squirm...all the while enjoying the effect the adrenalin rush has on you. I am not clostrophobic (did i spell that right??), but there are a few scenes that made me feel like i was trapped in a a rocky tube with no means of excaping. And, yes, at one point i did hide under the covers. The only downside was the ending....it wasn't as great as they could have made it. It broke one of the basic rules of writing a horror story. I can't tell you which one, but don't expect a big twist after you travel through this never-ending cave, fighting for your life. I'd say rent it first and then see if you wanna buy it....it's not for everyone. But it is thrilling!

In The Enemy Below Robert Mitchum and Curt Jurgens are respectively captains of a U.S. destroyer and a German U-boat whose vessels come into conflict in the South Atlantic. Both are good men with a job to do, the script noting Jurgens' distaste for Hitler and the Nazis and engaging our sympathy with the German sailors almost as much as the Americans. Made at the height of the cold war of the 1950s, the film delivers a liberal message of co-operation wrapped inside some spectacular action scenes and a story which builds to a tense and exciting, moving finale. --Gary S. Dalkin

Description

It's Mitchum vs. Jurgens as the commanders of an American destroyer and a German U-boat play a deadly game of cat and mouse.

5 out of 5 stars "He's a devil Heinie" !!!!.......2007-07-18

Tightly paced, this formulaic "cat and mouse" submarine film still works fifty years after it's release.Directed by former movie tenor Dick Powell and made during the Cold War, it features "rehabilitated" Nazis and carries a message of cooperation. Great performances by Robert Mitchum and Curt Jurgens and a good supporting cast allow you to overlook some of the cheesy special effects. A movie you can dust off and enjoy every few years.

5 out of 5 stars Above the others!.......2007-07-15

I love war movies, and when they include subs what more can you ask? This one is a classic that no matter how many times I watch it I never get tired of it. It combimes suspence and action with award winning special effects for the time it was made.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent.......2007-03-14

Para mi padre fue una pelicula memorable. Le recordó su epoca de gloria en la naval.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent film.......2007-03-10

I found this film to be not only an excellent action film, with excellent strategizing and suspenseful decisions by both sides, but to be a wonderfully clear-headed depiction of real people in war. The Germans were not automatically shown as Nazi fanatics (in fact it was made very clear that the German U-boat captain was not a fan of Hitler) but as men just like the Americans.

I found the ending to be wonderfully uplifting and emotional.

Ausgezeichnet, meine Herren!

5 out of 5 stars Great WWII movie.......2007-03-05

One of Robert Mitchum's best flicks. I bought this one along with several other WWII movies as a gift for my husband and because I remembered this one to be a great psychological war movie.

This short film was very interesting. Although somewhat dated as many of the newer attractions are not discussed, i think that it is a must for any disney nut.

5 out of 5 stars As an engineer and Disney fan, I had geat fun and learning!.......2007-04-21

Really the only thing that I miss is not been able to share it with many of my Spanish-speaking friends and family members because it lacks audio in other languages or subtitles. Otherwise, I fell more inclined to keep returning to the Happiest Place on Earth.

    5 out of 5 stars FANTASTIC!!!.......2007-01-27

This is a MUST for Disney fans. Besides showing images from rides that are not on Disney DVDs, they present much information about the construction of the parks and the backstage of WDW. The DVD presents everything in a chronological order, separated according to the theme parks and it includes the uptodate information, like the Expedition Everest ride.
It's a pity not having subtitles. But I really recommend it.

5 out of 5 stars Awesome Disney Info........2007-01-09

Bought this as a xmas gift for my husband and kids. After a recent trip to Disney, this was an amazing video to watch. I have passed it along to friends to see as well since the information was exceptional. I would recommend it to anyone who has been to Disney as well as to those who have not been.

4 out of 5 stars Inexpensive Backstage Tour.......2006-10-11

I rated this only four stars because the audio track on my DVD was out of sync with the video. It appears that the film to DVD transfer didn't compensate for the film audio being several frames ahead of the images.

On the other hand I now have images of the Utilidors. I managed to take two backstage tours of Walt Disney World during the 1990's. The Keys to the Kingdom tour and the three-park Backstage Magic tour were expensive and took up an entire day--but I thought them worth the trouble and expense. It took me three years to book the Backstage Magic tour, and for several good reasons I didn't get to take home photographs of the backstage areas such as the Utilidors. Modern Marvels provided me video images to keep these vital infrastructure of Walt's utopian village fresh in my mind.

I learned about the new Expedition Everest ride, and how the Tree of Life was grown by the Imagineers. I love the Monorail system and the Contemporary Resort--featured! This DVD lets me tour Walt Disney World and its secrets in the comfort of my home, without flying cross-country and putting up with crowds. It isn't "the real thing," but this DVD allows me to scratch my Walt Disney World itch until I get the time and a couple of thousand dollars to return to Orlando.

4 out of 5 stars Low budget greatness.......2007-06-12

The Descent didn't actually scare me, but it came closer than any film I've seen. The claustrophobic angles and dark, nearly pitch black lighting really gave it an effect I haven't seen since Pitch Black. The creatures were well done and nearly believable, and quite frightening. I would hate to be in the caves with them. Since this was a horror/thriller, the story wasn't expected to be very dense, and the characters weren't expected to be atypical, and this is usually the fault with this genre. If you want to terrify the audience, you need to identify with the victims and get to care for them. In this film we're just barely introduced to them enough to get to know their stereotype. But all of this doesn't matter when they enter the cave system and we see the beautiful underworld. This cave has never been mapped, so this is the greatest adventure these spelunkers could hope for, until the crawlspaces collapse behind them. With no way back, they move onward looking for an exit when the dark, confined spaces start to take a toll on their minds. But being stuck under the earth is the least of their worries. I really liked how well the film was made, and how complex the story got once the action got started. I said early we didn't expect the people to be atypical, but they really developed under the pressures of darkness, flight and survival.

    5 out of 5 stars TRULY SCARY - Blu-ray Perfection!.......2007-03-14

I love a great horror film that can actually make you want to turn the light on or lose sleep after watching it. Every so often a film comes along that accomplishes this and 'The Descent' is a prime example. The film is a departure from the clutter of junk horror films that have been released over the past few years by not merely infiltrating you with just startle scenes. The sheer fear factor of being trapped hundreds of feet below ground with the prospect of death at every turn is simply the cornerstone of the aural terror you feel throughout most of the film.

The Blu-ray presentation is immaculate from the reference quality video to the PCM 6.1 lossless audio track that is amazingly immersive. A must see for any horror fan and a 'high recommend' for anyone!

2 out of 5 stars Review on the film, not the disk.......2007-03-06

I guess everyone's opinion will vary, but I found this film and it's story to be completely lame. First of all, anyone who has EVER spelunked knows that you do not enter a cave without a map. Perhaps if you're some kind of professional adventurer and have the tools, support personnel, and the resources perhaps. However, this group of women certainly did not fit the bill. The characters were not well-developed, as some other reviewers would have you believe. They basically each seemed to fit into the stereotypical "group of gals" roles, when you were given any kind of glimpse into their personas. Really the only characters that were at all developed was the main character and Juno (the idiot that lead her friends, unknown to them, into an unknown cave system), and the both of them barely at that. All we really know about the groups is that they're women, Juno is something of an adventurer and probably had an affair with the main character's husband, and the main character's husband was tragically killed shortly after the group's last adventure.

Once we get into the cave the movie starts to take off...if that's what you want to call it. Yeah, they did a good job with the camera work and lighting, lending a sense of claustraphobia. The 'monsters' in the film really didn't go very far instilling fear into the viewer. The big mistake they made was in showing the enemy. In a movie like this, what you don't know is more scary than what you do know. Unfortunately, they didn't leave you with this fear of the unknown for long. After a short time, I found myself hoping for the ladies' deaths to come quick so that the film would end. I won't ruin the ending, but many of you will be saying, "What?" when the 'twist' is revealed. Fortunately, I rented this movie on NetFlix, so I lost out on nothing more than an hour and a half of my time.

    Description

On an annual extreme outdoor adventure, six women meet in a remote part of the Appalachians to explore a cave hidden deep in the woods. Far below the surface of the earth, disaster strikes when a rock fall blocks their exit and there's no way out. The women push on, praying for another exit, but there is something else lurking under the earth. The friends are now prey, forced to unleash their most primal instincts in an all-out war against an unspeakable horror - one that attacks without warning, again and again and again.

For those of you who've not seen Underworld, not just on PSP but on dvd also, you're missing out on a terribly good movie. Not only does this movie have style , but it also has some of the best action sequences in a vampire movie, as well as one of the best storylines, which is sometimes hard to find in a vampire movie.
