Description

In this action-packed sequel to Alien, Sigourney Weaver returns as Ripley, the only survivor from mankind's first encounter with the monstrous Alien. Her account of the Alien and the fate of her crew are received with skepticism - until the mysterious disappearance of colonists on LV-426 leads her to join a team of high-tech colonial marines sent in to investigate.

Personally supervised by director James Cameron, this special edition includes scenes eliminated prior to the film's 1986 release which broaden the narrative scope and enrich the emotional impact of the film.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars The best Alien movie ever.......2007-09-16

This is a sequel that delivers what the first installment did not - plenty of action.

The extended James Cameron version is the best of them all. I originally saw this version as a child and was unable to find it again until this release.

This is a thriller that has lost none of its sheen. It will continue to shock and horrify new vewiers for decades to come.

5 out of 5 stars EXCELLENT FOLLOW-UP - GREAT CHARACTERS.......2007-09-13

For the most part I have liked most Sci-Fi movies.
Aliens [the trilogy]not having seen the fourth, is fast becoming a classic.

Ridley, in her bvd's must have tickled many a guy's imagination. And I sure could understand her dread of returning to the infected planet.
What is strange is that the idiots who press her into joining the return discount her tale of distruction. Of course it is the Company that drives the mission into the "rescue" of the settlers.

Until Ridley finds out that the Company still wants a live capture of an Alien. Bishop is a much improved counterpart to Ash in the first movie, he cannot harm a human. Lance made Bishop come alive.

The little girl became a counter-drive of the movie - a definite reason to escape the Aliens or destroy them. The poor Marines [elite force] were led to the slaughter. But even they held out nicely.

The little girl's mannerism were endearing - and what expressions.
I was hoping that the last remaining characters were going to come out of the escape alive. Bummer.

Great characters - fast action - lovely Aliens? - nasty Company men - will be watching it again in the future.

Don't care for all the technical jargon of the movies short-comings or as a review - who cares? the movie is for entertainment.

DEFINITELY RECOMMEND - AGAIN not for those prone to nightmares.

5 out of 5 stars Magnificent Dvds of "Aliens" movie.......2007-09-11

"Aliens" is in my 10 Top all time favorite Science Fiction movies. So I wanted to get it on DVD. Glad I did! This set is Magnificent. Not only do you get Lots of extra deleted scenes from original movie showing, but you get an extra disc with Super Great interviews with actors such a Sigourney Weaver and Michael Biehn not only while working on the original movie but from recently looking back. I recommend this dvd set highly to anyone who likes James Cameron movies too. As he is the consumate Producer/Director as you can see from his other fine movies, Titanic and other sci fi movies.

5 out of 5 stars Extended Edition/Director's Cut Superior To Original.......2007-07-31

Cameron's excellent film is now made even better by adding fundamental elements that make more of an emotional connection to Ripley. With the added material we get essential information on just WHY she connected to Newt so strongly. Seeing Newt with her parents and brother on the planet adds a wonderful new dimension to an already outstanding film. As Cameron says in the introduction (at least there's one on my quadrilogy set) "this is the ride we intended you to take" and what a far more richer ride it is.

5 out of 5 stars Aliens.......2007-07-06

James Cameron's big-budget, special-effects-driven sequel to Ridley Scott's "Alien" might lack the carefully orchestrated tension of its predecessor, but its unrelenting pace and Weaver's smart, tough performance carry the film into its own nightmare orbit. Essentially an action film pitting a squad of scared, trigger-happy grunts against a teeming nest of truly frightening monsters, "Aliens" benefits from its superb small cast--including Lance Henriksen and comic Paul Reiser playing against type as a devious corporate slime-ball--as well as director Cameron's breathless pacing and air-tight direction. Just wait til Mother arrives!

This 1956 pop adaptation of Shakespeare's The Tempest is one of the best, most influential science fiction movies ever made. Its space explorers are the models for the crew of Star Trek's Enterprise, and the film's robot is clearly the prototype for Robby in Lost in Space. Walter Pidgeon is the Prospero figure, presiding over a paradisiacal world with his lovely young daughter and their servile droid. When the crew of a spaceship lands on the planet, they become aware of a sinister invisible force that threatens to destroy them. Great special effects and a bizarre electronic score help make this movie as fresh, imaginative, and fun as it was when first released. --Amazon.com

On the DVDs
The colorfully designed 2-disc 50th Anniversary Edition of Forbidden Planet (also available in a collector's box) comes in a slip-covered fold-out case accompanied by a pocket of 17 miniature lobby card reproductions (eight for Forbidden Planet, nine for the 1957 companion movie The Invisible Boy). On Disc 1, Forbidden Planet is presented with a new digital transfer from restored picture and audio elements, with soundtrack remastered in Dolby Digital 5.1, offering considerable improvement over the film's previous DVD release. A selection of deleted scenes were taken from a faded and scratchy 16-millimeter "work print" that had originally been viewed by composers Louis and Bebe Barron as they were creating the film's unique electronic score; they consist of full or partial scenes cut from the final film-- mostly for good reason, but collectors (and those who first saw this rare material on the original Criterion Collection laserdisc) will welcome their inclusion here. The "lost footage" is crude special-effects test footage, primarily of interest to sci-fi historians and aficionados. Given the fact that the original "Robby the Robot" cost over $100,000 to build in 1955, it's easy to see why MGM wanted to get their money's worth: An excerpt from the 1950s TV series "MGM Parade" shows Forbidden Planet star Walter Pigeon appearing briefly with Robby, and the popular robot gets even more attention as a guest star in "The Robot Client," an episode of the Thin Man TV series (starring Peter Lawford and Phyllis Kirk) that originally aired on Feb. 28, 1958. Disc 1 also includes a gallery of seven science-fiction movie trailers dating from 1953 (The Beast from 20,000 Fathoms) to 1960's The Time Machine.

Disc 2 begins with 1957's The Invisible Boy, a still-enjoyable B-movie that served as Robby's post-Forbidden Planet showcase. Here, filmdom's favorite automaton plays sidekick to a young boy (Richard Eyer) who turns invisible when he gets caught up in a super-computer's scheme of global domination. Also included are three documentaries, ranging from very good to excellent: In addition to reuniting the surviving cast members of the '56 classic (including Leslie Nielsen, Anne Francis, Richard Anderson, Warren Stevens, and Earl Holliman), "Amazing! Exploring the Far Reaches of Forbidden Planet" is an appreciative tribute to Forbidden Planet with some of Hollywood's foremost sci-fi fans including special effects masters Dennis Muren and Phil Tippett, SF movie expert Bill Warren, and others. "Robby the Robot: Engineering a Sci-Fi Icon" is a featurette about the robot's design, creation and pop-cultural history, featuring original "Robby" designer Robert Kinoshita, Bill Malone (current owner of the original Robby), and Fred "The Robot Man" Barton, a lifelong robot fanatic who now sells fully authorized, full-scale replicas of Robby for sci-fi fans with deep pockets. Closing out disc 2 is "Watch the Skies!: Science Fiction, the 1950s and Us," a 2005 documentary from Turner Classic Movies, written and directed by Time magazine critic Richard Schickel. It's a thoroughly comprehensive survey of '50s sci-fi and its influence on the next generation of film directors, including engaging interviews with George Lucas, Steven Spielberg, John Carpenter, Ridley Scott and James Cameron. --Jeff Shannon

Description

A dutiful robot named Robby speaks 188 languages. An underground lair offers evidence of an advanced civilization. But among Altair-4's many wonders, none is greater or more deadly than the human mind. Forbidden Planet is the granddaddy of tomorrow, a pioneering work whose ideas and style would be reverse-engineered into many cinematic space voyages to come. Leslie Nielsen plays the commander who brings his spacecruiser crew to the green-skied world that's home to Dr. Morbius (Walter Pidgeon), his daughter (Anne Francis)...and to a mysterious terror. Featuring sets of extraordinary scale and the first all-electronic musical soundscape in film history, Forbidden Planet is in a movie orbit all its own.

Was an awesome purchase. I love the movie and the extras make it worth buying. It would have been better if it was $10 cheaper.

4 out of 5 stars A Fifties Sci-Fi Classic.......2007-08-11

I love it: great cast, great sets, great colour, cod-Shakespeare story spin-off (the Tempest), invisible monsters, flying saucers, robots, unique soundtrack. This really is a must in any sci-fi collection. It's not erudite, or genre making, but just a great piece of entertainment and escapism.

When I bought mine, there was no European version (region 2) available, but the region 1 disc is nice (if you have a multi-region player) as it is double-sided with widescreen (16:9) on one side and academy ratio (TV 4:3) on the other.

5 out of 5 stars A true Classic.......2007-07-30

I got this dc set for my husband's birthady as it is his favorite movie of all time. He loves having it in CD now and especially likes the special 2 disc edition.

3 out of 5 stars Classic Pulp Sci-Fi.......2007-07-30

Forbidden planet is an old science fiction film about a spaceship crew with orders to investigate the disappearence of settlers from one of the colonies. Once on planet they meet a sinister genius who, along with his beautiful daughter is the sole survivor of the previous expedition.

This was an okay film with a fairly predictable plotline and an ending I found annoying. Fans of classic sci-fi will enjoy the old-fashioned special effects. I liked the cook character and the robot Robbie but found the captain to be a bit of a boor and Alta to be kinda creepy. She was just WAY too naive for my comfort level.

5 out of 5 stars THE APEX OF THE ALIEN FILMS.......2007-08-31

This is by far and away the best of the Alien films: it is frankly one of the best sci fi movies of all time, it is simply perfect. The creature is the coolest ever created in the sci fi genre and Weaver rocks are the protagonist anti hero, Ripley. This will have you on the edge of your seat: not for the weak at heart. Highly recommend; if i could give it ten stars i would.

5 out of 5 stars They come mostly at night ... mostly........2007-08-26

One of my all time favorites that I first saw in a theater and have watched on VCR and DVD many times since. Glad to see the restored intro scene where Newt's family rediscovers the aliens (the hard way), because I always enjoy Carrie Henn's scenes. (I know Newt irritates the hell out of some people, but I like the character.) She got her share of quotable (cliched? no, quotable) dialogue, too: "I guess we're not leaving, right?" (as alien infested shuttle crashes and burns) "Why do they tell little kids that?" (that there are no real monsters) "Can I dream?" (closing lines) "Aiiieeeeee!" (whenever confronted by aliens)

4 out of 5 stars Overall good, but boring at times.......2007-08-21

Most people personally choose this as their favorite in the "Alien" series. It does a great job of expanding on the Ridley Scott original, but I think the movie is extremely slow and boring at times.

However, you can't deny how this movie does have the most props. The APC, guns everywhere, flame throwers, movement sensor guns, and of course lots of focus on the movement detectors. These really help build the movie and add a lot to the setting.

But seriously. What is with Bill Paxton whining like a baby. I can't stop thinking of him when he played "Chet" in the movie "Weird Science". Especially during the part where he is crying "GAMEOVER MAN". He's a SPACE MARINE. Sigourney Weaver is more of a man than Bill Paxton in this movie.

Paul Riser is especially hard to watch, probably because when I see him I think about his later performance on the sitcom "Mad About You". I think a better actor could have easily been picked for his part. He almost has a lovable look instead of someone I want to hate.

Much of the dialogue is pretty bad in my opinion. The way the movie is shot makes small scenes explode on the screen, which is awesome. But the smaller scenes tend to drag on.

Overall, this movie is a must see. Do yourself a favor and see the original "Alien" movie before seeing this. If you enjoy both, try "Alien 3" and "Resurrection". I personally prefer those to this movie by far (visually and in terms of dialogue / characters).

5 out of 5 stars A classic science fiction movie with Sigourney Weaver at her best.......2007-05-17

It is very rare that we have the chance to see a science fiction movie where part two of the movie was better than part one. This is that kind of movie. If you are a fan of science fiction movies then you must add this one to your collection. Although this one was better than the first (Alien 1979), you'll still want to add the first one to your collection as another science fiction classic.

5 out of 5 stars A brilliant sequel.......2007-04-19

James Cameron directed one of the most exciting and fascinating SF action adventure films ever made in Aliens. Not only does the story flow seamlessly from the first film of the series, Alien, but the characters, special effects and directorial pacing cause the film to pound like a sledge hammer from start to finish. The action is nearly non-stop once it begins and the character of Ripley as all protagonists should be, is driven further and further up that tree of absolute peril until you are just sure she'll be torn limb from limb. The grisly antagonists drive the action with such relentless power that the screen seems to come alive with their swarming malice. No surprise there though, since these monsters were dreamt up by Dan O'Bannon and Ron Shusett and brought to organic, ghastly life by the artist and sculptor H.R. Giger. If you haven't seen it, see it. If you've seen it already, see it again and tune into the finer cinematic touches that make the danger so palpable, especially the sound.

4 out of 5 stars For Fans of Campy Sci-Fi and Phillip K. Dick.......2007-03-29

Filmed in the Montreal area during that period of time in the 90s when it was economically advantageous to shoot movies in Quebec, Screamers is a loose adaptation of Philip K. Dick's short story "Second Variety". It is a throw-back to the days when campy sci-fi was still a marketable genre, it feels more late 80s than mid 90s. Peter Weller is seems to fit comfortably into this genre with just enough over-acting to not compromise his integrity.

Personally, I really loved the scenes that involved the screamers themselves: mechanical devices reminiscent of rats sporting razor sharp saw-blades in their heads. They are programmed to eliminate the "enemy" in this post apocalyptic setting, but, in the tradition of all great sci-fi, SOMETHING GOES TERRIBLY WRONG(spoken in classic, cinematic threateningly low voice). All to say that many will end up with severed limbs.

Definately a fun movie to watch, despite its lacking somewhat in the second act. It turns out that two of my wife's cousins were extras in the final act of the movie when dozens of "davids" come marching out of the compound. Makes the whole thing that much more enjoyable for me.

5 out of 5 stars Loved it!!!.......2007-03-14

I loved this movie for it's sci-fi purity and simplicity. There's military, space, AI, mystery, suspense, nukes, drama, sexual tension, love... I'm planning to read more of the works from the writer that wrote the story the movie is based on. This is a classic sci-fi movie. Add it to your collection and get ready to watch it every 2 or 3 months.

3 out of 5 stars Close to Phil Dicks vision, but not quite.......2007-02-04

I have collected books written by Philip K. Dick for as long as I can remember, including over 100 of his short stories in the original publication edtion going back to 1952. I've got all movies related to him, inluding Barjo, which is really pretty good, as an aside. Even the Valis opera on CD which is kind of strange.

Anyway, this movie, as said elsewhere, is a very good B-movie. There are no A-list actors here, mediocre special effects and some dropped threads in the story line here and there. But in general is the kind of movie I expect to be shown on a Saturday afternoon scary movie matinee.

Don't watch this expecting a high intensity movie. There are parts that are slow, but for the most part it moves along in a fairly steady pace keeping you interested in it long enough to finish your popcorn.

The ending is expected and nothing is really a surprise. Almost looks like a grad school film project, but nothing wrong with that, look at Halloween and THX 1138.

So, neither 1 nor 5 stars, but in the middle. Find it used, well worth 5 bucks.

1 out of 5 stars AVOID THIS PRODUCT!!!!! NOT WIDE SCREEN!!!!.......2007-01-08

AVOID THIS PRODUCT!!!!

IT IS NOT WIDESCREEN AS ADVERTIZED!!!!

I have ordered and returned this product 3 times. It is not widescreen. There is no option to for viewing it as widescreen. Amazon has no explanation for the mistake and unfortunately they will not correct the web page. This leads to an interesting question. Why does Mr. Leach state in his review that the disk offers a widescreen option when it doesn't? Either Amazon is massively screwing up the order or he is not reviewing this actual disk from Amazon. If that's the case, he should not be providing a review on it.

5 out of 5 stars WONDERFUL ADAPTATION OF DICK'S SHORT STORY 'SECOND VARIETY' GETS THE MORBID & PARANOID ATMOSPHERE DOWN COLD.......2006-10-26

FIRST OFF: ALL SCI-FI GETS THE BENEFIT OF THE DOUBT FROM ME

I must admit that this type of film, gritty futuristic sci-fi set on another planet, would have to be horrid for me to not like it. Nevertheless, I do believe that, objectively speaking, 'Screamers', based on the short story 'Second Variety' by Philip K. Dick, is an excellent and worthwhile film.

***---> $20 MILLION FOR A B-FILM?

It seems rather amazing that by 1995, a 20-million dollar budget would only produce a 'B film' which the critics have referred to as "budget challenged"! I do agree that more effort should have been made to create the setting for this film, but would that really have made it more effective? 'Screamers' still manages to create a rather chilling atmosphere where it feels like something horrible is about to happen, but we don't quite know what. The world of 'Screamers' seems real enough and the bleakness seems totally appropriate to the subject. Nevertheless, there is something in 'Screamers' that seems like it was filmed with the least amount of scenery, and whatever was on hand was adapted to fit the story. Maybe this is true and maybe not. In any event, the film still works and does not feel like it is suffering from a lack of anything, specifically, that a bigger budget would have bought.

***---> IN A NUTSHELL [there may be plot spoilers below]

Here we have a planet that was exploited for a new form of energy which fizzled out as it generated an immense, toxic, radioactive waste as a by-product of its production. Two factions collided over the issue and it is now 20 years later. The year is 2078 and there is little left of the planet Sirius 6B, once a real garden spot, we are told. A lone soldier comes to the alliance bunker where Marshall Joseph Hendricksson [Peter Weller] is commanding, with a message which seems to offer a peaceful solution to the war that has ravaged the planet. From here the story goes on the road, a kind of trek that we have seen in the 'Wizard of Oz'. Marshall Hendricksson departs from the bunker with one new arrival in search of his N.E.B.s counterpart to sort out the meaning of the peace offering.

--- ON THE WAY --- EXPOSITION AS WE HIKE TOWARD THE NEB's BUNKER

Everything you will ever want to know about the situation on Sirius 6B and more is delivered via a thinly-disguised expository lump. This comes in the form of Hendricksson telling the new arrival, 'Ace' [Andrew Lauer], who he has taken with him on the trek, everything WE need to know in order to better understand this rather meandering tale. On the way to meet with his NEBs counterpart, the Marshall and Ace find a little boy who appears to be orphaned, several NEBs stragglers, and an attractive black marketeer [Jennifer Rubin]. All of these people have a distinct and vital role in the story, and little is as it seems.

--- AND OF COURSE THERE ARE SCREAMERS!!!!!

These screamers are the real deal here and we never really know what is happening with them and what motivates them because the Alliance that created them, represented here by Marshall Hendricksson, doesn't know either. We do know that they are evolving and upgrading themselves in many rather scary ways and that nobody is safe as long as they are in the same universe as human beings.

And there lies the heart of the story -- the Screamers. Just what is their significance to the human race????? After you see the film you will know!

Huuuuuh when i saw the first movie with my dad when i was a little child godzilla amaze me for the rest of my life, the myth of the giant monsters and all the things that change the fiction movies or horror movies, i love the monster and all the history behind him, mechagodzilla ( aka kyryu ) is great! also mothra the giant bee appears too in this film, the new image of godzilla was taken from godzilla 2000, is sooo cool! the movie in general have lots of action since the last encounter with godzilla and kyryu both almost destroyed a great part of tokyo in the last fight and now is payback time! Godzilla is wounded of the last encounter and mechagodzilla is very damaged of one arm and the lost of the main weapon the absolut zero! then mothra appears to save the people of tokyo but which kind of price the villagers of tokyo need to pay to survive another encounter? we don't now!!! until you watch this great movie!

5 out of 5 stars Hello, Godzilla!.......2007-02-17

When I first rented this from Hollywood Video, I was realy having doubts that it was going to be any good, But I got proved wrong in, what, the first 5 minutes? This Godzilla movies is one of the best I've ever seen, it even rivals Godzilla: Final Wars! Godzilla is no good guy in this one. MechaGodzilla is really cool, being the best MechaGodzilla yet, and Mothra is the best mother ever, dying, so her children will live on. And when you see her die, her kids witness it for the first time. seeing their mother die gave them thew energy to help MechaGodzilla take Godzilla down to the botom of the sea. This is a Godzilla movie like not other.

Perhaps these films are like the Star Trek movies: The even-numbered episodes are the best ones. Certainly this film (directed by French stylist Jean-Pierre Jeunet) is an improvement over Alien 3, with a script that breathes exciting new life into the franchise. This chapter is set even further in the future, where scientists on a space colony have cloned both the alien and Ripley (Sigourney Weaver), who died in Alien 3; in doing so, however, they've mixed alien DNA with Ripley's human chromosomes, which gives Ripley surprising power (and a bad attitude). A band of smugglers comes aboard only to discover the new race of aliens--and when the multi-mouthed melonheads get loose, no place is safe. But, on the plus side, they have Ripley as a guide to help them get out. Winona Ryder is on hand as the smugglers' most unlikely crew member (with a secret of her own), but this one is Sigourney's all the way. --Marshall Fine

Description

A group of scientists has cloned Lt. Ellen Ripley, along with the alien queen inside her, hoping to breed the ultimate weapon. But the resurrected Ripley is full of surprises for her "creators," as are the aliens they've imprisoned. And soon, a lot more than "all hell" breaks loose. To combat the creatures, Ripley must team up with a band of smugglers, including a mechanic named Call (Ryder), who holds more than a few surprises of her own.

2 out of 5 stars Fairly Awful.......2007-07-03

Just because you have the computer technology doesn't mean you should go cuckoo-for-cocoa-puffs with it.

I must say that this movie is full of tension; it hardly ever lets up (much like the second film). But it's clearly the creepiest, weirdest, goriest, and nastiest of the franchise. It's overkill. There's no solid story, and it's all becoming too familiar in its endless variations of the tired 'escape the monsters' formula. I am surprised at how many people give this movie four or five stars. It's not worthy.

Ripley's manicure manages to stay nice all through the harrowing ordeals. Not a crack or a chip. I nearly laugh when they show closeup shots of her hands. Didn't the director or any of the cast or crew notice this during the rushes?

But how about that disturbing, gruesome, gutwrenching scene before the end? Too much. (Shudder.) I'd rather watch "Sophie's Choice".

Of all the Alien films, I always gravitate back to the first, the original suspense-filled monster movie that created the whole egg/facehugger/birth/acid blood/alien concepts. I do enjoy the second movie for its action and thrills, but I've watched the first one the most. It is fairly brilliant, frightening, and purposely slow in building its tension to a wonderful climax.

Alien Resurrection is the kind of film you'll watch once, most likely...unless you enjoy cheesy, gore-laced action flicks with stereotypical characters and dialogue. It won't beg repeat viewing like number one does.

4 out of 5 stars Part 2 was better, heck should've really ended with 3........2007-05-15

While this movie is nice for just a popcorn flick, this series really should have just ended with 3. While I could enjoy the movie for what it was, which is why I'm giving this a 4 star rating.

3 out of 5 stars Alien Resurrection - Review.......2007-05-07

I generally liked this movie, but the story reminds me more of keystone cops type of comedy rather than the movie I had hoped it would be. Slapstick this movie should not have been.

4 out of 5 stars Scary adventure, almost touching at the end.......2007-05-06

I'm somewhat new to the Alien series. Since I wasn't even born before the first movie made its appearance in the 1970s I was too young even after Alien Resurrection hit theaters in 1997. I did see bits of the movies since they represent an epitome of science fiction filming, but still a child until the late 1990s (I was born in 1985) I didn't care to see something so graphic and horror-based. I had recently purchased the second film Aliens and was impressed by how convincingly Weaver portrayed Ripley, and how interesting the plot line was (I happen to find the first film eerie, but a little boring at first). The third feature, Alien 3, was definitely scary, but was my least favorite. Alien Resurrection is one of the best in the movies. The film has great effects (for its time), and once again Weaver portrays a believable character--in an interesting sense, the mutant alien (part original Alien and part Ripley) almost comes off a little sympathetic in the final look between Ripley's character and said beast, with its sad eyes looking at its mother. Definitely one of the better Alien movies, although I doubt it completely takes the top spot from Aliens.

5 out of 5 stars My favorite movie.......2007-03-29

This is my favorite of the series. I got it quick and I didn't get charged a small fortune

Amazon.com essential video

Description

A dutiful robot named Robby speaks 188 languages. An underground lair provides astonishing evidence of a populace a million years more advanced than Earthlings. There are many wonders on Altair-4, but none is greater or more deadly than the human mind. Forbidden Planet is the granddaddy of tomorrow, a pioneering work whose ideas and style would be reverse-engineered into many cinematic space voyages to come. Leslie Nielsen portrays the commander who brings his spacecruiser crew to the green-skied Altair-4 world that's home to Dr. Morbius (Walter Pidgeon), his daughter (Anne Francis), the remarkable Robby...and to a mysterious terror. Featuring sets of extraordinary scale and the first all-electronic musical soundscape in film history, Forbidden Planet is in a movie orbit all its own.

What can I say? Words just do not do HD DVD justice; the picture is stunning and brilliant. Just like the name says the look and sound of perfect. I am impressed.

5 out of 5 stars Very Cool .......2007-08-23

3 stars, worth a watch but nothing to shout about.

On the DVDs
Nestled in a metal collector's box decorated with variations of original promo art, the colorfully designed 2-disc 50th Anniversary Edition of Forbidden Planet (also available separately) comes in a slip-covered fold-out case accompanied by a pocket of 17 miniature lobby card reproductions (eight for Forbidden Planet, nine for the 1957 companion movie The Invisible Boy). On disc 1, Forbidden Planet is presented with a new digital transfer from restored picture and audio elements, with soundtrack remastered in Dolby Digital 5.1, offering considerable improvement over the film's previous DVD release. A selection of deleted scenes were taken from a faded and scratchy 16-millimeter "work print" that had originally been viewed by composers Louis and Bebe Barron as they were creating the film's unique electronic score; they consist of full or partial scenes cut from the final film--mostly for good reason, but collectors (and those who first saw this rare material on the original Criterion Collection laserdisc) will welcome their inclusion here. The "lost footage" is crude special-effects test footage, again primarily of interest to sci-fi historians and aficionados. 28, 1958. Disc 1 also includes a gallery of seven science-fiction movie trailers dating from 1953's The Beast from 20,000 Fathoms to 1960's The Time Machine.

Also included are three documentaries, all of them very good to excellent: In addition to reuniting the surviving cast members of the '56 classic (including Leslie Nielsen, Anne Francis, Richard Anderson, Warren Stevens, and Earl Holliman), "Amazing! Exploring the Far Reaches of Forbidden Planet" is an appreciative tribute to Forbidden Planet with some of Hollywood's foremost sci-fi fans including special effects masters Dennis Muren and Phil Tippett, SF movie expert Bill Warren, and others. "Robby the Robot: Engineering a Sci-Fi Icon" is a featurette about the robot's design, creation, and pop-cultural history, featuring original "Robby" designer Robert Kinoshita, Bill Malone (current owner of the original Robby), and Fred "The Robot Man" Barton, a lifelong robot fanatic builds fully authorized, full-scale Robby replicas for sci-fi fans with deep pockets.

Last but certainly not least, the Ultimate Collector's Edition of Forbidden Planet comes with a highly detailed three-inch tall die-cast replica of Robby the Robot. Should you display it proudly on your toy shelf or keep it in its cellophane wrapper? That's a tough call for devoted Robby fans... so you'll just have to decide for yourself! --Jeff Shannon

What can I say? Words just do not do HD DVD justice; the picture is stunning and brilliant. Just like the name says the look and sound of perfect. I am impressed.

5 out of 5 stars Very Cool .......2007-08-23

3 stars, worth a watch but nothing to shout about.

Japan's favorite city-wrecker faces his most formidable enemy--a robot version of himself--in this sci-fi adventure, which packs enough action to satisfy fans of giant-creature brawls. As with the previous films in the unofficial "Godzilla Millennium" series (which reinvented the Toho canon following the release of Godzilla 2000), Godzilla Against MechaGodzilla dismisses all of the monster's previous rampages after its initial appearance in 1954, including his three showdowns with MechaGodzilla. Here, the massive robot is constructed using DNA from the 1954 Godzilla (still moldering in Tokyo Bay) to combat a new one that threatens Japan. Director Maasaki Tezuki (Godzilla vs. Megaguirus) favors action over story, which may displease hardcore Godzilla fans, but the battles are spectacular, and clips from older Toho titles like Mothra and War of the Gargantuas are always a welcome sight (as is a cameo by the Yankees' Hideki Matsui!). As with other Columbia-TriStar Godzilla DVDs, this widescreen disc offers viewers two language options: the original Japanese dialogue track (with English or French subtitles) and an English-dubbed track. --Paul Gaita

4 out of 5 stars The best Godzilla film of the 21st century.......2007-08-13

This movie is great. If you're a Godzilla fan, this is what you have been waiting for. It's got a lot of great action scenes, surprisingly good special effects, and a human element that you can give a crap about but at the same time doesn't get in the way of the monsters doing their thing. If Toho had made more Godzilla films like this one, maybe they wouldn't have had to send the franchise back into retirement.

Who knows when we'll see Godzilla in a movie again, but at least for now, we've got Godzilla Against Mechagodzilla.

4 out of 5 stars Strange, yet good.......2007-03-07

It was not too long before I watched this movie that I had seen Godzilla v.s. Megaguirus, So I was hoping it would be the same Godzilla, so when I saw that his heat beam wasn't red, I was very dissapointed. Still, MechaG (as he is called) is absolutely incredible. The most streamlined and most Godzilla-like Mecha-Godzilla ever. But it's a little too much like godzilla X Megaguirus. Still, It's good, but not as good as Godzilla Tokyo S.O.S.

2 out of 5 stars Effects Getting Better, But Story Doesn't Deliver.......2006-04-12

This was better than Final Wars, so I'm giving it two and half stars, but still it didn't top G2K. I thought the premise of developing a mechanical/living hybrid from the sheletal and DNA remains of the Oxygenized Godzilla from the orginal film was great. I was expecting even more thrills and chills when for a moment after the current Godzilla roars, Mechagodzilla starts realizing what or who it is. This showed a lot of promise since a Japanese created machine potentially running amuck may have caused the Japanese to rely on Godzilla to save them from their own creation. Alas, this wasn't pursued and the film went down hill from there. Too bad.

4 out of 5 stars Great Godzilla film!.......2006-02-21

I read a number of the reviews for this movie and none of them mention how different this movie is from the many that came before it. It has a very human aspect to it, the plot does not just begin with Godzilla or some other monster sho
