Product Description
Following a cataclysmic nuclear war, the world teeters on the brink of complete destruction. Civilization is polarized into a degenerate society where opposing packs of marauding scavengers prey on helpless,
homeless nomads. For those who are lucky enough to survive the constant brutality and danger, it is a bleak existence. Life an death blur into abstractions. The only hope left for mankind is to find a hero worthy of becoming the next "Fist of the North Star" - an enlightened warrior - who is capable of leading those with the will to survive out of this barrenness into a new world. But in this savage no-man's land of shifting loyalties and power-hungry demi-gods, heroes are in short supply.

"You're already dead!".......2007-09-13
This post apocalyptic story is amazing and like the reviewer above, was the first Anime I had ever seen and what got me into them in the first place.
First off, Kenshiro is an awesome character. He is tough as nails, goes through the villains in the story like a knife through butter, but is full of wisdom while still managing to entertain with his tag line, "You're already dead!".
The story, in a shorthand, mankind uses nuclear power to destroy ourselves on our own planet. The remaining people are in a constant struggle where money and such has no value, yet food and water are better than gold. The world now is in a scarred and dying state, and the people who remain are in a constant state of "The weak will die and the strong shall survive and take from the weak."
Ken, who was betrayed by his best friend, left for dead and his love Julia taken from him, is thrown off a cliff and thought to be dead.
A girl who is a mute thanks to watching her family get burned alive, summons Ken through a link she has with him and he brings hell to his enemies. That is just a shorthand of the plot not to spoil it for those who want to see it. Plus, you can read above more about the story if you so desire.
It is VERY gory, lots of limbs getting ripped off, eyeballs flying, heads exploding, and blood that rains down all over the place. But, even with the fairly familiar plot (ala Mad Max) and the violence, the film manages to capture not only human weaknesses and strengths, it also captures a believable new world where constant remains of the world are seen. In one seen, a group of thugs kill a group of people who are traveling, and you see them stealing the food and water and throwing the money and jewelery aside, showing that they are no longer valuable unlike the world of today. The extremely violent scenes are shown in a bright, blurry fashion, which a lot of people complain about, but you still know what happens and you can still see it. I think the creators did this for two reasons, one because it's violent enough, and two because the deaths are supposed to be symbolic not a gore showcase. Probably it's both!
The animation quality is pretty good, seen better and much worse. The fight scenes can range from great, to short, to just plain hilarious. But, Ken is an awesome character and you would not want to be one of those who are against him. This is a must see, whether you are a fan of the comics, the original TV series, or the newer series.
The bad parts are some of the cheesy lines, and most importantly the end. It's a big cliff hanger, it just shows Ken walking around trying to find Julia all over the world while he keeps imagining glimpses of her picking apples from a tree and such. The biggest problem is not everything makes sense, especially translated in English. You miss a big part where Ken goes from being left for dead to where he comes back and is summoned by the little girl.
Could have ended much better but if you like action, gore, or just want to see a great Anime, look no further!

Massive Dose of Martial Arts Mayhem.......2007-05-06
One of the better live action versions of a Japanese Manga out there. I mean, how can you hate a movie where the antagonist and protagonist are Caucasians with Asian names, and the female love interest is Asian with a Caucasian name?
Dismally Bad Live-Action Version of Popular Japanese Manga Series.......2006-09-26
There was a brief period around 1995-7 when Toei, one of the major film companies in Japan, produced a string of now forgotten films featuring B-list English-speaking actor(s). Those films usually included Japanese actors as part of main cast or supports, and many of them were theatrically released in Japan (though none of them became a commercial hit). Today not many people know such titles as `No Way Back' (featuring then unknown Russell Crowe and Kelly Hu), `Countdown' (with Lori Petty'), `Final Vendetta' (with Brigitte Wilson) and `Crying Freeman' (directed by Christophe Gans). Except for `Crying Freeman' which is a decent action film, they are mostly unremarkable films.
`Fist of the North Star' was made during this period. The big difference is that its post-WWIII story derives from hugely popular Japanese manga series `Fist of the North Star' (`Hokuto no Ken'). Ask any Japanese under 40, and you will realize the popularity of the series. Well, not everyone liked it, but this comic created by Buronson and Tesuo Hara.became popular during the 1980s, and then TV animation version started, which also became a hit.
But this live-action version of `North Star' falls flat completely. It uses the earlier chapters of the original comic as the main story, in which we follow the battles of a stoic fighter named Kenshiro (Gary Daniels) in the bleak, post-apocalyptic world plagued with violence. Blood thirsty gangsters attack the villagers, and they steal and kill mercilessly. It is the world of the second `Mad Max' film (which greatly influenced the original comic), but unlike Mel Gibson's character Kenshiro (whose character is partly based on Bruce Lee) fights the villains with his original kung-fu, which causes the enemy's body explode (yes, literally, like `The `Scanners').
Unfortunately, however, it doesn't happen in this film because it is so CHEAP! The unimaginative production designs are mainly about mud, old factory, and wilderness with green screen behind it. Nothing is thrilling in here - you see hammy Clint Howard playing a despicable baddie with hammy Chris Penn playing another despicable baddie. Japanese actress Isako Washio plays bland Julia, Kenshiro's love, and it is not a good sign when you see Malcolm McDowell sitting like a Buddhist monk.
The story is sometimes hard to follow because of its confusing narrative, and it often goes on and on with talks, talks, and talks. Former kick-boxing champion Gary Daniels can show very good fight scenes, and he surely shows them briefly, but when that happens, the film is almost over.
My advice is again `Stick to the original' or in this case, original Japanese cartoon series. It is not perfect, but it is more exciting and entertaining.
gary daniels kick ass.......2006-09-13
this is gary daniels best performance so far, i havent seen or read the cartoon/comics, but this is a good entertainment movie. and the budget issnt that low. watch it, it is a must own
fists will fly, and heads will NOT explode!!!.......2006-07-21
nobody explodes!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! no one! i can't stress that enough. no one suffers the true wrath of the fist of the north star. if you are a fan of the animated series then don't watch this movie. it will only make you hate the person who made it. if you are a fan of martial arts movies, don't watch this movie because it will make you hate all of the actors in this movie. if you are a fan of mullets don't watch this movie because it will forever detract from the joy that courses through your veins everytime you see a remarkable quaff of hockey hair. if you are a fan of cheasy b movies then i also strongly suggest that you do not watch this one because it will make you hate yourself. this movie sucks on levels that you didn't even know existed. it sucks more than going on a blind date with with your mom. it sucks more than watching rosie o'donnell and liza minelli strip down and wrestle in creamed corn and chick peas. worse than a drunk near sighted proctologist with cold hands and long nails. it sucks more than pamela anderson having hep c. or like seeing your grandmother getting out of the shower. like sifting through dog poop looking for worms this movie will leave you feeling like you need a shower. is this movie better than a sharp stick in the eye? no, if somone stabbed you in the eye with any stick while you were watching this movie, then you would thank them for their mercy. save your sanity and do not, under any circumstances, watch this movie. gary daniels sucks and nobody explodes!
Remake is defentaly needed badly!.......2005-08-27
I was excited when this came out in 1995 and saw it in Tokyo. This was my favorite Japanese comic at the time. Unfortunately, this was one of the worst adaptations I could have never imagined. Although there were a few good fight effects, it did not make up for the poor screenwriting and plot. I want to remake this film with a big actor, and all the characters needed. This could be like "Lord of the Rings: Trilogy". The comic is tight, and the story is deep. So please don't watch this film. Read the comic and then let your imagination soar!!!

The original Fist of the Northstar was one of anime's first true hits in America, and the New Fist series is an even better piece of work. Now available in a single box set priced to sell!
Customer Reviews:
A good series but needs to be fleshed out a little more........2007-08-08
New Fist of the North Star really is a great series. One thing to point out is that even though the title menu proclaims, "Kenshiro's Quest", this really isn't his "quest". He's merely one player in this universe which centers around the city of Last Land, it's ruler(s), and the people tricked by the Last land dictators.
Kenshiro does play a big part in taking out the baddies, but the story is much more setting-driven as opposed to Kenshiro-driven. Do you still get exploding heads? Yep! Actually, about 10 minutes into the first episode, Kenshiro manages to take out half dozen foes of the Last Land gang.
Also the boss fights aren't fleshed out very well. They all (all 2 of them) last roughly 5 minutes. The fights here are much more martial arts driven unlike the original movie which the fights were more aura-driven.
Overall this is a great and insanely graphic series that while could've been fleshed out much more, is a worthwhile edition to any Hokuto no Ken/Fist of the North Star enthusiasts collection.
OK at best.......2007-03-01
First of all if your expecting some type of sequel to the original, forget about it. This doesn't tie into the original in anyway(even though they try to). In fact it doesn't even come close to the original, as far as action and character development. Fist of the Northstar brings back Ken from the first one and his purpose is still the same. He delivers final justice to those who oppress the weak. The earth was plundered due to war and the survivors are fighting for their existence by trying to find a source of clean water. There is a tyrant who seeks to take all the water for himself. Which results in mass killings. The concept of the fist of the northstar is pretty off. But if your looking for action, guts and gore, then this OVA will surely deliver on that end. However the depiction of the fist of the northstar is obviously going to infuriate true fans. This short collection is one disk with 3 one hour episodes. I dont get too deep into animation because if the movie sucks, then animation is the least factor. Despite its flaws, its still a decent watch. However I would still recommend the original before this, but if you can find this cheaper then get it. I purchased mine for $9.95 on another website. 18 bucks is way too much for this.
Completely missed the point........2006-09-26
I don't own this boxed set, though I've seen this series, and as a Fist of the North Star fan, I became angry and sad after watching it. If you're a fan, you'll probably react the same way. Note that this review contains SPOILERS, but considering how terrible this series is, I'm probably doing you a favor by giving you the high points so that you can move on to something better.
To begin with, the creators of this new series totally missed the point(s) of the original. While the original (and "real") Hokuto No Ken was about how one man with godlike power acts as a force for justice in a chaotic world, the new series includes "extreme" close-ups of realistic blood and guts (which were always blurred or off-color in the original TV series, not just because they were meant for younger viewers, but also because the villains' deaths were meant to be symbolic, rather than gruesome and terrifying). The new series has several gratuitous close-ups of brains flying out of nostrils and other ridiculous garbage. It's also shamelessly exploitative and features a totally unrealistic, brainless ninny of a female lead who, aside from serving the purpose of pandering with her nearly-naked body shown from every theoretically titillating angle, exists only to be taken advantage of in every sense (including physically). Otherwise, the characterization is extremely weak and the plot and pacing are all over the place. About the only thing they got right is that this Kenshiro guy is really strong, and people are scared of him.
The new series' primary "villain" is totally uncharismatic and is also a thinly-veiled ripoff of the equally unlikeable Shachi character from the Hokuto No Ken 2 TV series. For the sake of the new series' story, he's pitted against Kenshiro as some kind of equal, even though Kenshiro should, by all rights, completely annihilate him.
The series makes a few feeble attempts to tie into the original story--in the first 5 minutes or so of the first OVA, it's revealed that Raoh had a biological son whom Kenshiro makes his successor. This mysterious child then hurries off into the wasteland, never to be seen again, and that's about it. From then on, we see even more "new" scions of the Hokuto style (a fighting style that the original TV series suggested was highly secret and inimitable--but which led to offshoots in the second TV series, which was not-coincidentally when the Hokuto series and license unequivocally jumped the shark), unsympathetic civilian victims, the aforementioned unrealistically exploited female lead (who, against all reason, forgives the "villain" the trespass of sexual assault), and a limp and meaningless final battle. If you're a Fist of the North Star fan, or even if you're not, do yourself a favor and steer clear of this garbage.
Your better off buying this complete set.......2006-01-03
This box set is perfect for any fan of this series. This show is pretty good but lacking a couple of things you can't really put your finger on but you can just tell is missing. Besides that this is a very exciting and edgy anime box set. If you've seen the series on the anime network and you enjoyed and want to watch it over and over again then this is a smart box to get.
You save about 80 bucks for a series that isn't really worth that much. The style of animation goes together very well with this type of fighting because it shows the ruggedness that is trying to be put across. The violence is a bit crazy but after a while it gets old and you get use to it. The only thing terribly wrong here is that the main character kills everyone the same way, nothing ever changes so you know what's going to happen before it happens. You think since he is skilled with the knowledge of a pressure point fighting technique he would do some different moves to defeat his opponents.
This is a good series but this box makes it worth getting because you save so much you might get tired of some things before the story ends but it's still worth some time. Maybe if this becomes a series they'll think of fixing their mistakes cause New Fist has a lot of potential.
Really bad characterization..........2005-10-26
I really enjoyed the anime TV series and despite its various shortcomings, I liked story and concept elements of the reworked story in the anime movie... but New Fist of the North Star OVA parts 1-3 left me with a really bad taste. I'm no FOTNS buff, but whether this OVA is based upon an original novel or not, the characterization and actions are unbelievable.
The characters of Sara, Toby, Sanga and Seigi (sp?) all twist and change by the end and through flashbacks to become (at least for me) very hard to like. Sara is your typical wimpy anime woman, crying and going on about moral guff even in defense of someone who raped her and brutally murdered dozens of innocents by his own hand, and gave orders that led to the death of countless more. Toby goes completely insane, and the transition to insanity is not given enough time to be a believable jump. Sanga's insanity and treatment of his son is somehow acceptable at the end by everyone, when conveniently the Aunt of Seigi (sp?) shows up. Everything is contrived by the end and nothing is satisfactorily concluded.
This story is a waste of Kenshiro (the star character) who normally is one of the few characters out there in any anime/show/manga, that will deliver final justice to those that truly deserve it. I eagerly look forward to his death dealing to those villains that the story builds up, as very few other shows allow their star to step out of the politically correct 'life-sparing' frame of mind. The end of this OVA robs the viewer of seeing a despicable villain being killed at Kenshiro's hands, and leaves us with his own rape victim in tears mourning him.
Overall the whole thing, melodramatic and violent as Fist of the North Star is, could not be upheld by the characterization. I wasted my money on this. If you really want to see Fist of the North Star, I advise finding the original series. For me, my whole interest in Fist of the North Star has been destroyed.

Fist of the North Star (Hokuto no Ken, literally Ken the Great Bear Fist) which premiered on Japanese television in 1984, looks like a Saturday morning version of Mad Max starring a caricature of Sylvester Stallone. Searching for his lost love, Julia, Ken(shiro) wanders an Earth that was devastated by nuclear war. In each episode, he takes on a new sadistic motorcycle gang. (Food and water are scarce, but there's apparently plenty of gasoline.) In his travels, Ken acquires two sidekicks: Bart, a comic musician-thief, and Lynn, an adoring little girl. Ken is the last master of secret Chinese martial arts techniques: his specialty is making foes blow up from the inside. In every episode, several heads explode, actions that would be quite gory if they weren't so crudely animated. (Rated 13 and older, but more appropriate for 15 and older: considerable violence, profanity, grotesque imagery, alcohol use) --Charles Solomon

Easily One of the Best Movies; Deep Themes, Love, & Kung-Fu.......2006-02-14
You have to get the original movie version, not the new or old series. This film kicks so much ass, it's an apocalyptic kung-fu movie about fighting for good instead of wasting what is left of the earth on oppression and power over others with brute force and fear. The sons of a martial arts master have all grown powerful beyond belief, and when an old friend of Ken, the youngest and noblest son, decides to demand Ken's woman out of jealousy, The Fist of the Northstar (Ken) is defeated and all of the brothers start seizing power in their own barren lands, and starts the twisted fate of the revitalisation of the Earth.
The anime series (both of them) and the original movie remake can't possibly compare at all with the greatness of the ORION japanimation movie, the whole movie has a point and uses kung-fu and love to make an interesting story about doing what's right in a new dark age of man, eventually giving hope for the fate of a better future.
What The Hell???.......2005-09-28
The reviews for this item are about the LIVE ACTION FILM and not Volume 5 of the TV series Fist Of The North Star derived from the serialized strip and manga of the same name. This review is ACTUALLY about Fist Of The North Star Volume 5 which contains episodes 29-36 in the 1984 Toei Animation series.
The 5th DVD in this collection follows the Fang Clan/Toki storyline of the series. Ken is the Heir Of Hokuto Shinken, the LONE practioner/possessor of the power of the School Of The Great Bear. This series is an offshoot of the manga. Those of you that saw the ANIME FILM FIRST WILL BE CONFUSED AS HELL BY THE SERIES!
The film came TWO YEARS AFTER THE TV SERIES WAS PRODUCED. In the film Julia/Yulia/Yuria lives. In the manga/series she dies. In the film Rei dies. In the manga/series he lives. Raoh DOES NOT MAKE AN APPEARANCE IN THE SERIES...HE IS SHOWN AND MENTIONED BUT IS NEVER ENCOUNTERED. Toki appears (sort of) in the series/manga BUT NOT IN THE MOVIE...HE IS NEVER EVEN MENTIONED!
Bart (or Bat as he's known in the manga) and Lynne are with Ken throughout the 36 episodes, as are a few friends that end up dead and finish with Mamiya, the warrior woman. At the end of the series, you realize that it was made so that ANOTHER 36 EPISODES WERE FORTHCOMING...IT NEVER HAPPENED. I'll fill you in on what comes next (hint: The New Fist Of The North Star and Movie explained it).
Ken hunts for Toki, he runs into Raoh's minions and beats them all with Mamiya, Rei, Bart and Lynne in tow. He never finds Toki. Mamiya dies. Rei dies. He fights Raoh and beats him. Raoh sees he was wrong and pays respect to Ryuken's grave. He comes back and Ken becomes his advisor/counselor. Raoh has a son. Ken agrees to teach Raoh's son since he is the only heir to Hokuto Shinken. Ken leaves AGAIN to find Toki....he ends up in The New Fist Of The North Star. Confused? Of course you are! If you're not a fan of the series and need closure on how the quest pans out then don't bother yourself. If you are then you better try looking on the internet for all of the Fist stories you can find. One.
Gore Galore.......2005-07-30
This without a doubt one of the best anime's ever. The story is great and the action scenes is some of the best I ever seen and I been watchin anime for years. But these prices is insane. This movie is not worth 80 bucks. I know websites to find this for at least 9.95 but if I wrote it down, then these price gougin' goofs would probably buy all the s*** up and sell'em for these wacked out prices. This movie is awesome but you can find it cheaper.
Well I go ahead and hopefully give a helpful review. Fist of the northstar takes place during post apocalyptic time on earth where food and water is scarce. There's armies fighting for the best land and survival. The main character Ken delivers final justice to those who oppress the weak. The fighting scenes are possibly the best you will ever see. I highly recommend this movie but not for the price these goofs is chargin'.
How are there only 5 left in stock (right now)...?.......2005-04-18
Fist of the North Star is so unbelievably retardation-inducing it's hilarious. In that sense, and that sense alone, it is entertaining. But...my God, I don't even know where to begin in critiquing that show. So I'll just say the first couple of things that enter my mind. That girl, Lynn, is the most absurdly high-pitched annoyance out of all the main female characters - everytime I hear her say "Ken!, my ears feel like Kenshiro himself has punctured them. She serves as a perpetual reminder of why I converted to manga in the first place (lack of painful audio). I swear, she and the other kid must have only been put in the series to mock other anime children. Julia is not beautiful, just annoying. It's as pathetically simplistic as an NES game, but without the nostalgic or warm feelings. The artwork is horrendous.
This anime makes the Mortal Kombat movies look like martial arts masterpieces and Ranma 1/2 look serious.
As for the rest of the critique, I think it would be best for me to simply transcribe the gorgeously non-cliched script:
You're already dead!
You're already dead!
YURIAAAAA (Julia) !
YURIAAAAA (Julia) !
YURIAAAAA (Julia) !
YURIAAAAA (Julia) !
HELL HELL HELL!
Pressure point attack!
Pressure point attack!
Pressure point attack!
Love me Julia, love me! LOVE ME!
Evil bad people disturb our village!
Evil bad people disturb out village!
Sorry for the spam, but I figured some would enjoy it, since some enjoy the show.
One of the best anime of all time!.......2005-01-20
The Fist of the North Star full feature film mst be one of the best anime films ever made. Along with Akira, this film endoctrinates Westerners to the immense creativity, the culture, and the twisted minds of the Japanese animators. For those of you who still haven't witnessed a Japanaimation flick, now is a good time to start.
This film is not entirely faithful to the 30 minute cartoons, it does capture the essence of the story line. A story in it of itself is deep and complicated, using universal themes that anyone can relate to. It melds together the fear of, and the reality of a nuclear holocaust, with the fantastic feats that were never possible with martial arts.
Check out this film. Don't think of it as just a cartoon. Anima, and Manga are an important part of the Japanese culture, and should be viewed with that in mind. And by the way, this film is definately not for kids!

The New Fist Seem To Be The Best.......2005-01-06
New fist of the north star is truly the birth of a great series. With great characters and a well done storyline it only leaves you asking for more.
In this volume Kenshiro encounters a big twist in the plot that seemed to be already decided. When he finds that Tobi has gone mad and betrayed him, I mean how dumb is that. Kenshiro is the only one that can beat Seiji and Tobi would rather have power over his own people's lives. The only downfall in this series is the continuous pressure point head explosions I mean it was great in the first episode but after a while it gets annoying and they dont even poke the pressure point with their finger anymore they just punch them and they expload it's still kind of cool but I think they should pull back on it just a little bit. I don't like to tell everything so I'll end it with this, overall episode 3 gets 5 stars for great animation,an unpredictable story line, and great fight seens. The last fight seen may have been the best one yet out of the first 3 eps. This episode gives a little info on the background of Kenshiros fighting style and the fist of the northstar.

One of the first anime features, Fist of the North Star was based on a popular manga series set in the not-too-distant future, when Earth has been devastated by a nuclear holocaust. The scattered survivors huddle in ruined cities, awaiting an enlightened warrior-hero worthy of the title of "Fist of the North Star," who will start the planet on the path to recovery. That mythic hero arrives in the person O, who looks like a caricature of Sylvester Stallone drawn for an American Saturday morning cartoon show. The relatively simple story is burdened with many subplots involving evil brothers, betrayals, kidnappings, and murders, all needing endless expository scenes. Director Toyoa Ashida borrows shamelessly from the Rambo and Mad Max films, along with Frank Frazetta's illustrations. Fist of the North probably ranks as the most violent film in animation history, but after the fourth or fifth head explodes in gobbets of red paint, the effect becomes unintentionally comic. --Charles Solomon
Description
The world is on the verge of complete destruction! The only hope left for mankind is to find a hero worthy of becoming the next Fist of the North Star. Powerful animation and a provocative story distinguish this science fiction epic. Contains extreme violence.
