Flash Gordon Savior of the universe.......2007-09-14
I haven't seen Flash since I was a kid in junior high.I recently purchased the DVD and it brought back a lot of memories, the show itself is a classic the soundtrack is one of my all time favorites.I recommend this DVD to all the rockers of the 80's.
FLASH GORDON is FUN !.......2007-09-12
Flash Gordon (Savior of the Universe Edition) is FUN to watch. We consider it a Sci-Fi Classic. There is 1 episode of the old black and white series of Flash Gordon on the DVD, which was cute to see, but would have been much better if they had the whole series to compare with the movie. Love the campy movie, very colorful version. Of course, music by Queen is fantastic ! Can watch it over and over. It's GREAT !
So bad... It's good!.......2007-09-12
There are so many things to criticize in this movie. The acting is atrocious, the lines are bad, and the special effects are brutal, but it is still fun and entertaining to watch. It is a classic!
Flash Gordon, Finally.......2007-09-09
I'm very glad to see this awesome camp favorite finally out on DVD. I would have been happier to see it in HD or Blu-Ray.
Many people have already expressed their disappointment with the extra features, so I won't go there.
Overall, this is the movie you wanted to own on DVD, on DVD. It is what it is. Nothing special, nothing horrible.
a classic.......2007-09-06
I remember watching this movie when I was 8 years old on HBO and to me it is still one of the coolest films ever made. Flash Gordon had very colorful special effects that made it stand out.Though they were not of the Star Wars quality they did make the picture viual. Ulike the Ming in the new Flash Gordon this Ming is the true Ming. With the attitude, the costume, and the head gear and berd that is what Ming is all about it think. And finally the women are more exotic in this version such as Aura and Dale which were so hot that they lid up the picture.I reconmend this film for those who have never heard of Flash or are wanting to see it for the first time.

Steven Spielberg's 1982 hit about a stranded alien and his loving relationship with a fatherless boy (Henry Thomas) struck a chord with audiences everywhere, and it furthered Spielberg's reputation as a director of equally strong commercial sensibilities and classical leanings. Henry Thomas gives a strong, emotional performance as E.T.'s young friend, Robert MacNaughton and Drew Barrymore make a solid impression as his siblings, and Dee Wallace is lively as the kids' mother. The special effects almost look a bit quaint now with all the computer advancements that have occurred since, but they also have more heart behind them than a lot of what we see today. --Tom Keogh

REVIEW FOR BOX SET ONLY! GREAT FILM DEFACED!.......2007-09-03
I bought the E.T. Box set at a reduced price recently because I refused to buy the altered version of the film! THIS HAS GOT TO STOP AND STOP NOW! Where do we draw the line? Are we gong to do CGI over the original "King Kong"? Are we going to color Hattie McDaniels's skin color white in "Gone With The Wind"? It is getting ridiculous what we are putting up with! People need to get over themselvies and stop being so sensitive. I just watched the Godfather trilogy and I'm Italian American! Am I complaining that Italians are protrayed as Gangsters? No! We could go back and forth all day talking about this, but in short....let things stay intact! No altering films or art etc., whether its a classic or not! It is what it is! OK?????? Ahhhh I feel slightly better now! The original film E.T is a wonderful film that seemed even better than I remembered. The DVD transfer looks great and the audio was really surprisingly good! The is an excellent film, but look for the gift set cheap. AVOID THE SINGLE DISC LIKE THE PLAGUE!
If It Isn't Broken, Don't Fix It! .......2007-08-28
A film should stand as a testament or product of its era/time. So why change that and steal the appeal that made them special? Another questions for future generations to ask when they watch what once was a movie classic, but now raped into submission by political correctness.
It was what it was, but now - what is it??? I'm having a hard time deciphering that myself. The magic of E.T. has been tainted. When it should have been left alone.

Awesome. But only for the second disc........2007-08-19
This is a fantastic film. I don't know when it became cool to diss Spielberg and his movies but I see why it was included as the 24th greaest American movie on AFI's 10th Anniversary list.
Such a powerful movie. It works on so many levels and Henry Thomas gives a wonderful performance.
But the first disc ruins the classic. CGI takes away that realistic feel to movies. No matter how wondeful the advancements are, there's something about CGI that ruins a classic when it's retouched in an unneeded way.
E.T. did not need retouching. It's a perfect film. One of the best I've seen.
Great Enjoyment for the Whole Family.......2007-07-07
I know many adults who, when pressed, will admit to crying during ET. It's a movie that really knows how to play your heart-strings. The basic story is pretty straight-forward. A cute, friendly alien gets stranded on earth, and is befriended by a young boy and girl who try to help the alien get back home again. In an era where most aliens are evil, nasty creatures bent on world domination, the police and FBI agents are all out to grab and investigate this menace. So you end up with the nasty, dark government against the cute, innocent kids.
I saw this movie as a teen and enjoyed it greatly. I've seen the movie *with* kids and they loved it. It really is a movie that appeals to all ages, and it does that without talking down to anyone. It's earned its spot in the AFI top 100 movie listing with its plot, pacing, acting and directing.
If I have a complaint here, it's with the "redone" 2002 version. The movie was great as it was when first put out. There was no need to alter the ET main character. His whole appeal was that he was organic and someone you could relate to. Why turn him into a CGI thing?
Also, I have an issue with them turning the police and FBI's weapons into walkie-talkies. Sure, kids don't need to be exposed to Pulp Fiction degrees of blood and violence. However, to say that police officers can't carry weapons makes no sense to me. What's next - gunfighters in the old west who walk around with empty holsters? When real police do community policing and walk beats, should they hide their guns so that kids don't see them? I found this completely unnecessary and more than a little insulting to the intelligence of the youngsters watching with me.
Watch the original movie, which is what the AFI voted in - not the "PC version".
E.T........2007-07-06
Spielberg creates movie magic with this warm-hearted yet gripping fantasy tale. ET himself is a creative marvel, the cutest, most non-threatening alien in sci-fi history. The child actors are uniformly good, particularly Thomas and the beguiling Barrymore. "ET" ingeniously turns science-fiction conventions on their head, as the earthling grown-ups are the bad guys, and the alien, the hero. Larger-than life emotion (and tension) elevate this film to timeless family classic, aided by another majestic John Williams score.

This is the film that cemented Schwarzenegger's spot in the action-brawn firmament, and it was well deserved. He's chilling as the futuristic cyborg who kills without fear, without love, without mercy. James Cameron's story and direction are pared to the bone and all the more creepy. But don't overlook the contributions of Linda Hamilton, who more than holds her own as the Terminator's would-be victim, Sarah Connor--thus creating, along with Sigourney Weaver in Alien, a new generation of rugged, clear-thinking female action stars. It's surprising how well this film holds up, and how its minimalist, malevolent violence is actually way scarier than that of its far more expensive, more effects-laden sequel. --Anne Hurley
Description
In the year 2029, the ruling super-computer, Skynet, sends an indestructible cyborg (Arnold Schwarzenegger) back in time to 1984 to kill Sarah Connor (Linda Hamilton) before she can fulfill her destiny and save mankind.

Sci-fi classic.......2007-09-16
It doesn't get any better than this. Self-aware machines stage a coup on humankind. Who will win the battle. The machines are robust - because we built them that way...
Terminator should be in everybody's video collection.
A sci-fi classic.......2007-08-19
Arnold finally found his role when he played an oversized, underemotional robot without too many lines to deliver.
Excellent script and an 80's atmosphere which doesn't feel too cheesy. There's a bit of wooden acting in places but the movie works so well that I can forgive it that.
THIS IS NOT THE Special Edition DVD !!!!.......2007-08-11
Movie 5 Stars no question.!!!!!!!
But Hey AMAZON. Thats not the special Edition you selling!
I bought this DVD about the specials. And? - I became a DVD without specials. THANKS !§&$&%&/
If you have the name Sarah Connor, RUN!.......2007-08-11
Tripping, dude in real life is pumping iron and winning Mr. Universe awards, beating out that Ferrigno guy that played the Hulk. Then he plays this cyborg dude that comes to Earth to kill off a lady whose son will lead a future revolution against the Robots. Yeah I know you are thinking dang, Bill Gates was probably in on this! No, he was not but Linda Hamilton rox yo world as Sara Connor, now you can spell that Sarah Conner or Sara Connor or whatever, I don't care. What I do care about is that this film really opens the eyes to a bad dude. This dude has red eyes and he gave a whole new attitude in 1984 when he had one ripped out, shrugged and simply donned some blades. Yeah black leather jackets as well. Oh man and then he just starts ripping up this police station!
Well c'mon, not very realistic. Sure you can have cyborgs come here and do stuff, they do all the time but usually they are just in Vegas playing the odds while on a stopover from Venus. Okay the worst part is this...a waitress from Los Angeles suddenly becomes the cops main concern? Yeah right that did not happen in the whole O.J. deal now did it? Real life this lady would not have made it and by the time the cops even had gotten hot on the trail, the Terminator would have been jumping around time warps so much his head would be spinning!
Classic Sci-Fi starring Arnie, who is now a Guv-nah but still pumps iron.
"I'LL BE BACK" GREAT SCI-FI THRILLER SPECIAL EDITION REVIEW!.......2007-08-05
This review is for the special edition. The transfer is excellent and it has some great extra material. The movie itself is a faced pace action film with a pretty cool sci-fi story. If you are not familiar with this character by now......what are you waiting for? The entire trilogy is very good and it is a toss up between the first and second movie for best installment. The second installment had a lot more money to play with and is as good as sequels get. "Arnold" does a great job playing the unstoppable "Terminator"!

Labyrinth Rules The Universe.......2007-08-29
What to say about one of the most enchanting movies from my childhood? This all-time classic always suspends my disbelief to the point where even now when I settle in to enjoy my DVD of this personal favorite, some little corner of my mind accepts that I truly am watching events as they unfold within a massive labyrinth controlled by none other than the coolest of the cool, the sinister and charming Goblin King himself, David Bowie. Had Labyrinth been done a few years later than it was, it would have been computer-generated, and that would have diminished the impact of the Jim Henson characters who as puppets added just the right touch to this story of a quest by a young girl to save her baby brother, Toby, abducted from his crib at her accidental behest, ere he is transformed forever into a goblin. As teenaged Sarah, played by a strikingly beautiful Jennifer Connelly, undertakes her brave trek into the heart of the Goblin King's elaborate magical maze (the sets for Labyrinth are awe-inspiring creations) she encounters its denizens, some helpful, others mischievous, a few malign. The music of Labyrinth is also good enough in its own right to warrant mention and makes for a soundtrack that's also worth owning. (A mini review for you...) Although I own Labyrinth on VHS and purchased it on another DVD a few years ago, this anniversary release is the best of the lot, not only for its "time capsule" extra features, but also because for the first time since seeing it in theaters as a kid, Labyrinth is finally featured in a widescreen format which does it justice. A great movie, and a DVD worth owning.
Almost as good as I thought it would be.......2007-08-15
Labyrinth is somthing that was my life blood for many years. I have the original release of the DVD and didn't bother getting any of the more recent collector edition or fancy dvds that came out recently so I can't compare to those.
The movie is the same, but much higher qualitiy, you can really see all of the glitter that sparkles all over the labyrinth, its wide screened so you can see that much more of the world (and the elusive treasures in Sarah's room, aka the Goblin King doll).
The DVD is in a slip case, which has a holographic type cover (oh yes, its that cool). The first DVD has the movie along with a track of commentary by Brian Froud. Having listened to it I found it pretty interesting, since he was involved in the entire creative process he had a lot of background information on how certain things came about, though sadly no on set anicdotes (except for a few which are related to Toby) since he didn't witness alot of the filming. It would have been nice to have another track with some of the muppeteers, Brian Henson, Kevin Clash, Karen Prell etc.
The second disc has the old documentary on the making of the movie, which was on the previous DVDs. It also has 2 new documentaries. Both have interviews (new) with Froud (Brian and Toby) Gates McFadden, Brian Henson (very insightful), Karen Prell, Dave Goelz, George Lucas (very interesting, I was surprised he did this actually) and several others that were involved in the making of the movie. With in these new features there are some new behind the scenes footage, screen tests, but what I was really dissapointed in...In the MirrorMask coffee table book it was mentioned how Neil Gaimen and Dave McKean mentioned how when staying in Jim Henson's home in England they found a nearly six hour version of the Labyrinth and used it as a sort of spring board for their own creative process. I wanted to see some of that six hours, to see some cut scenes, extended scenes, outtakes. It sounded when the press release for this first came out that it would have some of that in it...sadly no.
But it is still enjoyable enough to get. Besides every home should have a copy of this movie (or three like mine does)
A beautiful, enchanting movie.......2007-08-15
This movie came out when I was two and it's been my favorite for 20 years.
It is most definitely a MUST see for anyone who enjoys fantasy and fun, as well as anyone who enjoys a glammed-out Bowie in tight pants.
Beautiful.......2007-08-11
This is a very under-rated fantasy movie and this is a tragedy because of how truly wonderful it is.
It's beautifully done and quite surreal. It's a terrific film for children and adults. David Bowie stole the show as the charismatic and musically incline goblin king. If you enjoy fantasy or just want something a little different or if you just like Glam Rock this is for you. With six songs by Rock legend David Bowie Labyrinth is one of the most wonderful fantasy films of it's or any time.
The film should appeal to the child inside. It's ideal if you're a David Bowie, Jim Henson, George Lucas or Brian Froud fan. Froud's artist hand in the movie has it's effect through the whole production. The movie has charm and meaning. The journey through the Labyrinth is a journey through one's own spirit, a journey into maturity and self-discovery and learning what is truly important.
Fairy tale fun at its finest.......2007-07-30
In the early 80's Jim Henson created one of the most ambitious fantasy films ever: The Dark Crystal. It was a movie that had a completely realized world with its own creatures and flora... and it was performed entirely by puppets. Not the Muppet kind that Henson is famous for, mind you. These were serious creations that involved serious innovations in animatronics. While many loved the movie and it was critically acclaimed many others didn't "get it". There was no human interaction in the movie whatsoever and that put off people. Also the movie was serious with none of that Muppet mayhem Henson fans are so used to. That put off a few more people.
The next evolutionary step in Jim's grand scheme of fantasy puppetry was Labyrinth, and they filled in the gaps that The Dark Crystal left for those who couldn't (or wouldn't) "get" the concept of a fully realized fantasy setting that is outside of our own. How does he do it? Let me tell you...
Step One - Human actors. Labyrinth included the young, yet already talented Jennifer Connelly as their heroin and well-established musician and actor David Bowie as her nemesis. Now you get the fun of a complete puppet world while at the same time you have human characters that interact in that same environment. Thus giving the viewer a better connection to the puppet characters.
Step Two - Better puppets. The Dark Crystal is a masterpiece in of itself, however the technology used to animate the puppets was in its infancy and if you had to be picky about it you can pick away at the limitations of the puppets in that movie. With Labyrinth you get updated technology, which gives you puppets who can show emotions better. Case in point is the goblin Hoggle, who is the starring puppet. So much attention to detail went into his facial expressions that you can actually see the fear, disgust, anger, and joy in his eyes. Add to that other puppetry innovations and you have a world of cool puppets.
Step Three - Keep it fun. The Dark Crystal was a grandiose and serious film that included some funny moments now and then. Labyrinth is the opposite. Is a fun film where the characters meet up with unexpected and often times crazy situations. Makes this fantasy adventure feel more comical in the same way it would reading a fun bedtime story.
Step Four - Keep the original concept. Jim Henson did The Dark Crystal with the thought that he wanted to create a whole different world inhabited by beings and creatures portrayed entirely by puppets. Labyrinth is essentially the same thing, but done in a different way. Walking through the movie's namesake (the maze that leads to the goblin city) is definitely like being in another world that's both fascinating and fun. Much of what you see is visually impressive and essentially relish in the fact your eyes can play tricks on you. Brian Froud is again signed on as the conceptual designer and his work shines just as well in this iteration as it did with Dark Crystal.
Labyrinth also has the destinction of having songs specially written for the movie by David Bowie. Keep in mind this movie was in the 80's so what you get is 80's Bowie, and there are a couple scenes that flow more like music videos (or musical numbers) than standard scenes.
You might get the impression I am dogging on Dark Crystal in order to lift up Labyrinth. Can't be farther from the truth. However I do know the differences between the two films and how the other was made in response to the first. Labyrinth is the folk tale while Dark Crystal is the fantasy book. I believe both are fantastic movies.
The original DVD for Labyrinth was a good compilation right from the start, and is superceded only now with the Anniversary Edition. Here's what you get:
Documentary Making of the Labyrinth - Has interviews with the actors and puppet performers including Brian Henson, David Bowie (who gives us some insight on his character) and Jennifer Connelly. This documentary was in the original DVD and is included on the Anniversary edition.
Journey Through the Labyrinth: Kingdom of Characters and The Quest for Golden City - These two all new featurettes include updated interviews with the cast and crew and never before seen footage from the Jim Henson archives.
Commentary by Brian Froud
You also get DDS 5.1 Surround in English and Japanese along with a Portugese stereo track (how many movies have a Japanese and Portugese dub?), Subtitles (in English, Japanese, Portugese and French), remastered visuals from high definition masters, and it's presented in anomorphic 2.35.1 widescreen.
Although no announcements have been made to made a truly high definition copy (HD-DVD or Blu-Ray) with all the wonderful extras included I'm sure it will eventually happen. However until that happens this is what you would call the definitive edition to date. Labyrinth is a wonderful movie for all ages. The visuals will impress and the hijinks will entertain. If you are a Muppet fan this movie will be much more accessable than the Dark Crystal, and if you like The Storyteller then you have abolustely no choice but to get this (it's like a full length Storyteller movie sans John Hurt).

Customer Reviews:
Great title and mind blowing graphics.......2007-09-13
I've seen the title before but never in Blu-ray, and let me tell you its a whole new experience. The detail is something else and sound is great!! I can't wait for the second installment.
Most underrated movie of the NEW millennium..........2007-09-10
I'll keep this short. Have you ever cried because a movie you loved was hated or ignored by everyone else? And that movie was obviously a work of art that took teams of artists years to create?
Well, that's how I felt when "Final Fantasy TSW" came out and died within a couple of weeks. I went to the premiere of this fine film. The theater was half-empty. I went again two weeks later, just before the movie disappeared from cineplexes. Would you believe I was THE ONLY person in the room?! When the eagle at the end soared away over the mountain range, I had to choke back angry tears. (The beautiful ending itself had caused the first upswell of tears.) Why was nobody else enjoying the show with me? And what a show it was! Great "acting" by the digitally created cast, especially the leads, restrained but believable dialogue, breath-taking visuals, and tight editing of a logical storyline that is so perfectly steamlined and simple it should never cause confusion. So why this tragedy of an empty theater after just two weeks?
First, many critics panned it, complained of wooden acting and a convoluted plot. They claimed the story was unoriginal; well, what other movie does it plagiarize? Apart from the stereotyped way the marines sometimes talk, what is unoriginal here? Second, the trailer was misleading; this is a moving love story, set against the spooky, solemn backdrop of a last-ditch attempt to repel an alien invasion and restore the Earth to humanity. The love is between Aki and Gray, who ultimately must love their planet enough to sacrifice their lives to save it. There is also credible caring between Dr. Sid and Aki, and Gray and his Deep-Eyes. But the trailer presented "Final Fantasy TSW" as a kind of juiced-up videogame. A rollercoaster thrill ride, which it is at times, but the human quality of the story is paramount. It's the only reason I would have seen this movie so many times, bought TWO copies on DVD, and now proudly own TWO copies of the Blu-ray release. It's definitely worth it.
Unfortunately, that will not bring back Square Pictures (closed up shop after the movie flopped) or reunite the gifted animators who brought the characters to life so memorably. I'm just doing my part to support one of my favourite movies, while thumbing my nose at certain small-minded critics and at the moviegoers who left me all alone in the theater (not that I really minded having the whole place to myself).
Lovers of this movie, UNITE! (And if you haven't seen it yet, by all means DO!)
Amazing CG for it's release..........2007-08-28
But not so now... Ah, the progress of technology! "Sky Captain.." showed me that the CG bomb still lives on. I'm a nostalgic geek for past CG failures and so I Re-bought this on the BR format. I am one of the few who actually watched this in the theaters so it was a pleasure to experience it again in all it's hi-def sorta glory on my little theater back home. Pass the cheese please.
One of the Best CG Movies Ever Comes to HD.......2007-08-13
It has been six years since thhis movie's release and it still stands as the benchmark for human CG animation. People hate on this movie, but I think it is a work of art, directed by a true genius (Hironobu Sakaguchi) one of the greatest game designers ever. It is sad this film bankrupted Square Pictures, but they did rise from the ashes to produce Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children so all was not lost. Besides the amazing animation, I love the story and characters, and the space sequences (especially the opening scene) are stunning in hi-def. Who knows when this movie will be topped technically, although Beowulf looks like it might give FF a run for its money.

This is a great movie !!!!
The cgi work is amazing !!
If you like cgi art this is the movie for you.
All other cgi movies should take notice of the work done in this movie.

The 2006 limited-edition two-disc release of George Lucas's epic space fantasy Star Wars is not only the first time the movie has been officially available by itself on DVD. It marks the first-ever DVD release of Star Wars as it originally played in theaters in 1977. What does that mean exactly? Well, for starters, the initial title crawl proclaims that this is just Star Wars, not Episode IV, A New Hope. Second, the film is without the various "improvements" and enhancements Lucas added for the theatrical rerelease in 1997 as well as the DVD premiere in 2004. So no more critters and droids scurrying around the port of Mos Eisley when Luke and Obi-Wan Kenobi first arrive, no meetings between Han Solo and Jabba the Hut and between Luke and Biggs (extraneous scenes that were cut in 1977), no enhanced explosions during the final reel, and--most importantly to some fans--no more of Greedo shooting first in the bar. Instead Han is free to be the scoundrel and not even let Greedo squeeze off a shot.
What do you lose by watching the 1977 version? Dolby Digital 5.1 EX sound, for one thing (only 2.0 Surround here). Digital cleanup for another--Tatooine looks like it's been coated with an additional layer of sand cloud. But for home-theater owners, the biggest frustration will be from the non-anamorphic picture. On a widescreen TV, an anamorphically enhanced (16x9) picture at a 2.35:1 aspect ratio will fill the screen with the exception of small black bars on the top and bottom. The original edition of Star Wars, however, is not anamorphically enhanced (sometimes referred to as "4:3 letterbox"), so on a widescreen TV it will have large black bars on the top, the bottom, and the sides unless you stretch the picture (and distort it in the process, especially considering the substandard picture quality). If you're watching on a standard square-shaped (4:3) TV, though, you won't notice a difference.
Yes, it's true that serious home-theater lovers who want spectacular sound and anamorphically enhanced picture can always watch the 2004 version of the movie also included in this set. But chances are good that they already picked up the trilogy edition of all three films, so their decision to buy the 2006 two-disc edition depends on how much they want the original film. The official LucasFilm stance is that this is an individual release of the 2004 version of Star Wars: Episode IV, A New Hope, and the 1977 version of the film is merely a "bonus feature." Common speculation is that the only reason the original versions are seeing the official light of day at all is to undercut the booming black market for the laserdisc version. Star Wars fans will have to decide for themselves if that's worth the purchase. --David Horiuchi
Description
For the first time ever and for a limited time only, the enhanced versions of the Star Wars: Episode IV A New Hope, Star Wars: Episode V The Empire Strikes Back and Star Wars: Episode VI Return of the Jedi will be available individually on DVD. Plus, these 2-Disc DVD's will feature a bonus disc that includes, for the first time ever on DVD, the original films as seen in theaters in 1977, 1980 and 1983.
Customer Reviews:
Not for me.......2007-09-09
If I knew this was the the only way ever I could buy the original 3 films as released in the cinema I would buy these discs.
I've just borrowed this one from a friend and the original version on disc 2 is in 2.35 - 1 letterbox (no problem with that) but not anamorphic (why?). This means those of us who own widescreen TV's have to either watch a tiny image to get the best quality picture or zoom it out and lose quality. No thanks I'll take the chance and wait.
The quality of the disc 2 original is OK, but you need to know that the picture is not anamorphic. What this means in simple terms is that on a widescreen TV you get black bars top and bottom as well as right and left, unless you use your TV's zoom option.
Next year is the 30th anniversary and George Lucas may do us all a favour next year and release the originals as they were supposed to be seen.
original Star Wars (episode IV) on DVD.......2007-09-06
I'm very excited to own the original Star Wars series on DVD. I'm a huge fan of the series, but I'm also a purist who prefers the un-tweaked versions of episodes IV, V, and VI. So I am tickled that Lucas finally released them on DVD, and I'm excited to own them at last.
Do not improve upon the best!.......2007-08-29
Okay, everyone knows that "Star Wars" was a seminal motion picture. It was the biggest thing in 1977, it has influenced countless movies and tv shows that have come after...Heck, in the early 2000's (don't ask me which year, I forget...look it up!) it was voted the #1 movie of all time by Empire Magazine. (Of course, it's a populist poll, I don't necessarily agree with it, but I see where they were coming from.)
But are we talking about some revamped version from 1997? Or the new add-on's from 2004?
No, we're talking about the original, from 1977.
I'm getting more and more amused by people on here that call the people loving the orginal "reactionaries" (or something less, if they don't know that term) because we're against the way Lucas keeps messing with the movie. They act as if we're idiots, falling for wanting to keep the movie the same as it was.
Excuse me? Who's falling for what?
If the movie had never been tampered with, if Lucas had always kept the original the way it was, chances are you guys still would be in love with it! That movie has never to this day been outclassed or outmoded.
You guys are the ones falling for all the new stuff. There was never any need for ANY of it.
"Star Wars" made history, and invented a whole new way of looking at movies. It's a wonderful movie, and it was a ground-breaking movie.
Every time Lucas messes with it again, he takes away some of that history. After all, mess with it enough, and it will be hard to understand how it was ground-breaking in the first place.
Leave it as it was, and you can see how other movies tried to live up to its promise. Continue to update it, and no movies from the 80's or 90's will even seem to come close.
And, as I said, it was (and is!) wonderful, as it was back then.
We're not the ones that are suckers for old stuff.
You guys are getting suckered into new stuff.
(Of course, I'm commenting on the original movie itself, not this particular transfer...which, from other comments on here, would seem to be pretty shoddy. And come on, George...would you really have us believe that the original elements are gone to a movie as important as this?)
My last Star Wars Trilogy.......2007-07-09
I will not get into many details as a lot of people has reviewed this item. One of the most viewed reviews (by Kory) explains the difference between regular widescreen and anamorphic widescreen and how annoying is to watch the 1977 film with black bars surrounding the whole picture (top, bottom, left and right).
Could Lucasfilm have released something better than this? Definitely. This limited edition of the star wars trilogy is the same from 2004, the difference now is that one of the "bonus materials" (what is that supposed to mean?) is the original release, no digital Jabba, Han shooting first, Ewoks singing at the end of `Jedi' and the original phantom of Anakin Skywalker. It took only 2 years for this release after Lucas stated he would not be releasing the original versions. Now he releases this and says he will not remaster them, which can only mean we have to wait another couple years to have the original versions remastered.
I agree with those that believe Lucas disrespected his original films, for a company that is the one to set the quality standard in movie releases (ILM and THX) this is a poorly done job, Dolby 2.0 surround, not remastered and non anamorphic! They did a superb job remastering the special editions, try watching the special edition and then compare it to this DVD release, the difference is abysmal, I tried to watch this in my widescreen TV and had to use the zoom feature as it is not enhanced for anamorphic widescreen which only made the quality of the image look worse.
Why did I purchase these then? Well, I, like many fans, still kept VHS copies of the original trilogy before the special edition, the VHS image was not anamorphic, not remastered and the format is almost extinct. I see this release as a digital version of those VHS films, I believe this DVD will last longer than my old VHS copies and plus, I got them at the price of $9.99 each (and can be found cheaper) I can finally get rid of the old VHS and keep these digital versions of the original films.
It is rumored that a complete collection is to be released later this year commemorating the 30th anniversary, it will probably have the original editions remastered, however, I do not intend to purchase that, enough is enough, I had always waited to see a DVD release of the original trilogy, well, it may not be the best but it is finally here. Over the years I've learned that Lucas will always have `never before seen' additional material to include in every single new release he plans. I have the special edition (remastered as it is) and these limited original versions copied from the laser disc release.
I decided to buy it and stop complaining, finally, this is the last Star Wars trilogy I am buying!
george come on!.......2007-06-25
com on George why don't you stop giving everybody this cheesy stuff? If you are going to remaster them, make everything better! picture sound, lightsaber and blast improvmets. and if u r going to sell the unre, astered then sell it Untouched! the only button u should press is the ''copy button''
Customer Reviews:
One of the BEST films EVER!!!.......2007-09-04
Warner will release it in the proper 2:20 aspect ratio, trust me. The past DVD's have all been done that way, and with all the care that has gone into the remastering of these 5 Kubrick titles, they will do the right thing. They have made 'The Shining', 'Full Metal Jacket'(new transfer), and 'Eyes Wide Shut' all 1:85, since that is the theatrical aspect ratio. Kubrick shot full frame for TV showings, and the film would be 'masked' for the 1:85 theatre screen. This is why these last 3 films of his are full frame 1:33 on DVD. This was before widescreen TV, of course. I would have to imagine that if he were still alive he would want home viewers to have the best experience watching his films, and would agree with the widescreen 'masking' to fill the frame/screen, since that's how we saw them in the theatre. Kubrick's assistant has stated that this transfer of '2001' from 70mm is 'stunning'. Along with the extras, c'mon, it's a no-brainer to want this in your collection. The more you see it, the more you see in it. Blu-Ray or HD DVD, I have them both. Can't hardly wait!!
Blu Ray - all the way.......2007-08-24
I am surprised but pleased beyond measure that this great film is being released so soon on Hi Def. Each time I watch it I get the same weighty thrill that i experienced the first time. The unseen presence that are the alien Watchers sets this tale apart. What truly amazes is how downright believable this film is, despite being made in 1968! Take note of how Floyd watches widescreen television on his way to the moon! I look forward to seeing details I have never seen before, reading signs on the spacestation that were only a blur on dvd, the infamous spacestation toilet instructions, and of course experiencing rich High Def color. And while you're at it, gurus of disc authoring, release the great sequel, 2010.
A masterpiece in high definition.......2007-08-20
This film should be excellent in high definition. It's a couple of months until the release date so I can't say much more at this time.
It's a WIDE aspect film people!.......2007-08-19
This MUST be a very sad release. Why would Warner attempt to foist this garbage on us? Are they really such money grubbing dopes as to think that we would not want the finest available digitization of this excellent film work?
THIS FILM IS SUPPOSED TO BE AT 2.35:1 ASPECT RATIO! We are tired of the two step process used to FINALLY get a film they way it should be initially released.

Director John Carpenter and special makeup effects master Rob Bottin teamed up for this 1982 remake of the 1951 science fiction classic The Thing from Another World, and the result is a mixed blessing. It's got moments of highly effective terror and spine-tingling suspense, but it's mostly a showcase for some of the goriest and most horrifically grotesque makeup effects ever created for a movie. With such highlights as a dog that splits open and blossoms into something indescribably gruesome, this is the kind of movie for die-hard horror fans and anyone who slows down to stare at fatal traffic accidents. On those terms, however, it's hard not to be impressed by the movie's wild and wacky freak show. It all begins when scientists at an arctic research station discover an alien spacecraft under the thick ice, and thaw out the alien body found aboard. What they don't know is that the alien can assume any human form, and before long the scientists can't tell who's real and who's a deadly alien threat. Kurt Russell leads the battle against the terrifying intruder, and the supporting cast includes Richard Masur, Richard Dysart, Donald Moffat, and Wilford Brimley. They're all playing standard characters who are neglected by the mechanistic screenplay (based on the classic sci-fi story "Who Goes There?" by John W. Campbell), but Carpenter's emphasis is clearly on the gross-out effects and escalating tension. If you've got the stomach for it (and let's face it, there's a big audience for eerie gore), this is a thrill ride you won't want to miss. --Jeff Shannon

ALIEN VS. AMERICAN SCIENTISTS.......2007-09-14
I have watched this movie numerous of times and I find that I love it more each time. Yesterday I let my eleven year old son watch it. When I told him what year that it came out he said, "Ahhh, come on, I hate it when you make me watch those old, stupid movies!" Within ten minutes he was engrossed. When the movie was over he told me that The Thing is now his favorite horror movie and that he was going to have nightmares. My point is that The Thing is such an incredible movie that every person, no matter what generation, is going to love it.
THE THINGS ARE AMONG US!!.......2007-09-01
they sure didn't give this movie the credit it deserved. i'm telling you john carpenter did it again. man, this movie was extra good. the actors did a phenomenal job, the whole idea was brilliant, and the setting...what better place. who's who. the aliens really do exist among us, but as humans. this one was just plain evil. for it's time the effects were great, personally one of the best. total isolation, the thing, paranoia sets in, distrust, and nowhere to go. all you have is to fight back, whether you're the last man standing. the ending was good, he leaves it all up to you. if they don't kill each other the weather surely will. i do recommend this mind blowing classic.
Class from Carpenter.......2007-09-01
I saw this at the Cinema in 1982 and on occasions had to watch through my fingers!
This film and Aliens were the last two great Sci-fi/horror films that did not have digital special effects. The effects in this film are astounding. For the younger people reading this (those born after the late 60's) you have to realise that what you see on the screen was actually created in the studio and not on a computer. They still look good compared with todays CGI and remain the pinnacle of animatronic special effects. Full credit to Rob Bottin the special effects wizard on The Thing.
The film itself is a claustraphobic affair once The Thing is loose in the camp, and you continally have doubts about which character is still human. The suspense is helped immensely by a intense music soundtrack by Ennio Morricone, who had obviously listened to some of Carpenters own soundtrack music.
Kurt Russell in the leading role does a great job as MacReady, and the supporting cast which includes Keith David (Platoon, Pitch Black) and Richard Dysart all give good performances.
This film was a high point for John Carpenters career, since whilst he has made some good films since (They Live for example) most of them have been very poor in comparison compared with this film.
The DVD has digital 5.1 sound.
"I know I'm human and some of you are human or you'd all jump me right now" McReady(Kurt Russell).......2007-08-30
I saw this one when it came out and have this one on my top 10 list of favorite horror movie. While it is true the effects are stunning and have yet to be matched, it is with repeat viewing that the better parts of the movie rise to the top.
This is a more accurate telling of the short story classic"Who Goes There?" which was the used to make the original "Thing". In that one we had a monster from outer space that was described as a "Carrot", while here we go back to the idea that the alien can assume the shape of anything it touches. This is where the movie gets it's scariest scenes from, you never know who is on your side or who is an alien.
The cast is great and once again Kurt Russell shows that he is a very fine actor and carry's this film. This is one that stays with you long after the movie is over.
Grotesque, violent, and repulsive horror at its best........2007-08-25
Years ago I saw this movie on television and I did not understand why this movie was considered a horror classic. On television most everything exciting was edited out and the plot was butchered due to the tv editing.
So I eventually watched it on DVD after a friend suggested I watch it again. I was very impressed. The Thing is not only a grotesque and ultra violent movie, especially for 1982, but it has a steady build up of suspence and twists and turns within the plot. Now, just because I said the movie was super gross especially for 1982 doesn't mean that The Thing doesn't stand strong against modern horror films. In fact The Thing creature is the sickest and most freaky alien I've ever seen in a movie. It would be awesome to see a sequel by the title of Alien VS. The Thing. I wonder who would win and what sort of mutants would form out of their battles.
This movie is highly recommended if you like horror, sci-fi and gore.

The Alien Quadrilogy is a nine-disc boxed set devoted to the four Alien films. Although previously available on DVD as the Alien Legacy, here they have been repackaged with vastly more extras and with upgraded sound and picture. For anyone who hasn't been in hypersleep for the last 25 years, this series needs no introduction, though for the first time each film now comes in both original and "special edition" form.
Alien (1979) was so perfect it didn't need fixing, and Ridley Scott's 2003 director's cut is fiddling for the sake of fiddling. Watch it once, then return to the majestic, perfectly paced original. Conversely, the special edition of James Cameron's Aliens (1986) is the definitive version, though it's nice to finally have the theatrical cut on DVD for comparison. Most interesting is the alternative Alien 3 (1992). This isn't a "director's cut"--David Fincher refused to have any involvement with this release--but a 1991 work-print that runs 29 minutes longer than the theatrical version, and has now been restored, remastered, and finished off with (unfortunately) cheap new CGI. Still, it's truly fascinating, offering a different insight into a flawed masterpiece. The expanded opening is visually breathtaking, the central firestorm is much longer, and a subplot involving Paul McGann's character adds considerable depth to story. The ending is also subtly but significantly different. Alien: Resurrection (1997) always was a mess with a handful of brilliant scenes, and the special edition just makes it eight minutes longer.
The Alien Quadrilogy offers the first and fourth films with DTS soundtracks, the others having still fine Dolby Digital 5.1 presentation. All four films sound fantastic, with much low-level detail revealed for the first time. Each is anamorphically enhanced at the correct original aspect ratio, and the prints and transfers are superlative. Every film offers a commentary track that lends insight into the creative process--though the Scott-only commentary and isolated music score from the first Alien DVD release are missing here.
Each movie is complemented by a separate disc packed with hours of seriously detailed documentaries (all presented in full-screen with clips letterboxed), thousands of photos, production stills, and storyboards, giving a level of inside information for the dedicated buff only surpassed by the Lord of the Rings extended DVD sets. A ninth DVD compiles miscellaneous material, including an hourlong documentary and even all the extras from the old Alien laserdisc. "Exhaustive" hardly beings to describe the Alien Quadrilogy, a set that establishes the new DVD benchmark for retrospective releases and looks unlikely to be surpassed for some time. --Gary S. Dalkin

Worth it just for the first 2.......2007-08-27
Alien and Aliens is science fiction at it's pure best. Actually, I like Aliens even better than the first. Best sequel to a film, ever. As for the other 2...well, Alien 3 was OK I guess. It had it's moments. Resurrection, I'm just gonna pretend it doesn't exist. Though I admit, I have seen it more than once. Its just too poorly written. However, I love the character of Ripley, she is one of my fave characters in film anywhere. For die-hard fans, this set is for you.
Flaw in Resurrection Disc.......2007-07-27
I just wanted to reiterate what another recent reveiwer had said about the "Alien Resurrection" (film #4 in the series, disc #7 in this set) being a defective disc. This has also been the case in my collection. The disc stalls after selecting play on either the special edition or theatrical release editions and shuts down after spinning hopelessly in your disc player for several minutes. This incident was not isolated to one player, but all of them I tried (DVD Theater system, PC DVD-rom drive, PS3, etc). You can access the film via the "scenes" menu, but the film indeed will not play all the way through. When you get to the scene where Ripley tears out the aliens "tongue" and hands it to Call, the disc will fast forward to the end of the movie. This is the location in the disc where it "transitions" (that slight pause you get in all dvd's). If you already have a copy of this film from a previous Legacy DVD release, be sure to hang onto it. Naturally, this voids out the whole idea of having a special edition of Resurrection, but alas, you will not be able to watch it. HUGE flaw on Fox's part, should have been a recall on this one. This is not the first title manufactured by FOX that has had issues. Two Simpsons box sets I had ordered in the past also arrived damaged or with missing discs. I will not purchase any more box sets from FOX unless it is at physical store where I can return it immediately if the need arises.
Chest Bursting Goodness .......2007-06-27
Quality...If you are a fan of the Alien movies look no further... This is a really cool collection of these movies and I am glad waited to buy this collection... Lots of cool extras and tons of new scenes to watch if you select the directors cuts of each film.
Nice!
It's all here!.......2007-06-27
For die-hard fans of Alien, like me, this set is a godsend. The bonus minutes on each disk really add to the story. I was never a huge fan of Alien Resurrection but even the bonus features for this installment of the Alien legacy were awesome.
The minutes added to the first movie, Alien, shows what actually happened to Dallas and Brett. The additional footage on Aliens shows Newt and her parents prior to the Alien invasion. Alien 3 bonus footage adds more to the plot and suspense. As for Alien Resurrection, like I said, wasn't one of the better Alien movies but any set wouldn't be complete without it.
A Must Have For Any Alien Fan.......2007-05-23
I have been a fan of the Alien movies since I was a kid. I never got to see any in theaters except for Alien Resurection. This is a great set and each movie has extended or deleted scenes added to the films. The first two, Alien and Aliens are great classic movies and the extended scenes make the classics that much better. The final two, Alien 3 and Alien Resurection are the mos underated in my opinion. Alien 3 was a great movie but has alot more cursing than the other three but it fits considering it is set in a prison. There was a bunch deleted from this film and it really adds alot to it as several key scenes are completly different and make more sense IMO. The only issue is that the added scenes have degraded over time and some of the dialouge was unusable so at times the audio is hard to hear, but it is still very interesting to watch. Alien Resurection was the most underated of the four and while it's not the best it is still a good movie. The added scenes really make it that much better. The special features on all of these movies are imense and this is one set that is a must buy for Alien fans and science fiction lovers.

It's in the stars ...........2007-08-30
This was a beloved movie on my part, for it's sweet, childlike innocence and wonderful sense of accomplishment. Being this was made in the 80s, several movies following Star Wars had a sci fi theme, were aimed at kids 14 and under, incorporated new technologies (in this case, videogames), and had a happy ending.
Alex is a kid from a trailer park. He is ernest, dependable and hard working, and (talk about science fiction) not white trash in the slightest. His fellow trailer park residents are also, amazingly, not trashy and more like a charming small town of characters. His only escape from his mundane existence, besides his girlfriend Maggie, is his love of the one and only arcade videogame, Starfighter. Because of his agility with the joystick, one day an intergalactic con man named Centari comes to earth and offers him an opportunity to become a starfighter. He leaves a beta unit (a carbon copy of Alex) in his place, and off they go into outerspace. Alex, however, chickens out. He says he doesn't want to be a starfighter, he's not important enough, he's not worthy, etc. And Centari said something that I thought was a bit jeuvenile, but in the recent past I have been shown time and time again that truth is in the simplicity of : "If that's what you think, that's all you'll ever be".
And that is true. You CAN do anything you want. Climb the mountain, travel to distant lands, even save the universe with a videogame. If you want something bad enough, if you work hard, if you put anything and everything you have into whatever it is you want, you'll get it. How many people have I seen not get what they want because they just gave up? They chicken out because they don't have someone else to attempt it with them or because they can't go it alone? Cowardice is always far safer, as Alex shows us, but heroics bring glory, as he later shows us.
The special effects were cutting edge at the time, and now they look silly. But, in a period piece such as this, it's not without it's charm to know that it's just a guy in a rubber mask or primative computer graphics programs. And the comedy antics are always fun, with the Beta Unit's bumbling fish out of water attitude and being clumbsy on earth, as well as Alex's awkwardness while in space. This takes me back to a happy time.
times gone by.......2007-08-22
I have no intention of doing away with my dvd collection in favor of buying all those titles again with HD DVD or BluRay discs, but a few dvd's in the collection are worth replacing, and this is one of them. With so much in this movie that is completely cheesy (the scene where the robot clone becomes Alex, covered in some kind of cosmic snot no less, as a case in point), there is still an 80's magic that tugs at my heart and makes me want to share it with the 4 kids I have now. It's a simple story, told before in many different ways in a bevy of genres, with special effects that could have been done on a Mac (it seems like to me)--but I think it is that simplicity in an old fashioned hero's story that makes it attractive as a movie to share with my tweens (if only they can get over themselves and just accept the movie for what it was and is--a reflection of times gone by). I hope they like it as much as I did, even though the bass from the subs in the pickup of Alex's buddy in once scene must be from good ole Spark-O-Matic 5 X 9's instead of the 18" subs the kids are putting in their spare tire sections of their cars today!
Ahhhhhh......The 80's.......2007-07-29
There was a time when video games were so graphically simple it's hard to describe why they appealed to us. But they did; we'd never had anything like them. I know I spent hours putting quarters into astroids and centipede. The basis of this movie starts here, with Alex, a kid from a trailer park who is so good at a video game that he is asked to come and be a pilot in a galactic war. You see, the video games were placed on Earth to find earthlings who would be good at fighting. Of course Alex can't tell his family what he's doing or just disappear, so a robot Alex is left behind for his bewildered family and girlfriend to deal with. While this movie is not original in plotline and the special effects are completely laughable by today's standards, it is a sweet movie from a very important time in my life. I don't know how it will look in 1080p, but I know I've caught reruns on TV through the years and always enjoyed repeat viewing. Not many movies can boast that. Long live the 80s!
