Deep Space Nine's sixth season began ambitiously with a six-part story arc devoted to the Dominion War. This was a brave move in many ways, but a sensible one too. Whereas other sci-fi shows wouldn't commit to showing the impact of war (e.g., Babylon 5), here there were numerous visible sacrifices. Characters were frequently kidnapped and held prisoner, allowing screen time for other members of the ever-growing cast (at its peak there were as many as 18 individuals with speaking roles per episode). This year also introduced the idea of Starfleet Intelligence and its sinister Section 31; alliances were built only to crumble almost immediately; Sisko led a suicide mission and at long last his destiny as the Emissary took a serious turn.

Amid all this sturm und drang the writers felt it necessary to inject some levity. In fact, there was so much comedic sidetracking this year it actually seemed as if they were afraid of the series' dark tone. Witness: Quark undergoing a temporary sex change, leading a Magnificent Seven-style band of Ferengi (with a cameo from Iggy Pop), Morn's nonspeaking character being sorely missed, the blend of Troi and Guinan into '60s crooner Vic Fontaine, and, in one fan favorite episode ("Far Beyond the Stars"), Sisko having visions of himself and the crew as 1950s staff writers on pulp magazine Incredible Tales. There were also cute reconciliations among Worf's extended family (leading to Trek's first cast wedding), and even the revelation of Bashir's genetically enhanced origins quickly became a subject for easy jokes.

Any of these events would have been satisfactorily cute if the war had ended and the show had moved on. But it confused the viewer when every so often the battle would be rejoined mid-episode. The clinching proof that no grand design was really at work was in the sudden exit of Dax. Despite all the jarring humor scattered about after the strong opening, the show seemed unable to avoid reverting to shock tactics for its finale. All of which hardly made the promised final year seem a particularly enticing prospect. --Paul Tonks

Another Season Of Star Trek Problems.......2007-09-14

I like DS9 decently enough but the problem I had with the show was the DOMINION WAR.I thought while watching the conflict to the finale was if the Dominion was a galactic space faring empire for two thousand years why were they having such a hard time with the FEDERATION who's own space faring technology has only been around three hundred years.Seeing the deference in centuries of technological advancement would be like putting todays armies and navies with all their weaponry and having them go against a 9th century army there would hardly be any resistance from the ancient armies.That being said the season was one of the shows most action-packed seasons it seemed it had Sisko retaking the station from the Dominion,th marriage of Worf and Dax,and sadly Jadzia'a Death at the end of the season.The video quality and sound is excellent you seem to hear a lot more background noise and special effects then when you watched it on t.v. All in All if you're a big star trek fan this is one of the more decent seasons but if you can I say wait until a sale goes on or a year or two for the price to go down

Possibly the Best season.......2007-09-06

Finally the seasons of hints and innuendo come to head and the dominion war finally occurs. This was the climax we had been waiting for. Starting after the amazingly gribbing cliff hanger, the show picks up head done into the war. The show never leaves it behind, but never resolves it either. While I expected the season to wrap it up at some point, much like real wars, it kept going, almost to the point where it was part of their regular life. The show was very dark in spots, but made up for it in a number of very light and fun episodes, involving Worf and Dax's wedding, and several fun ferengi episodes. I really have grown to love this show, and think it can stand toe to toe with any other sci-fi show out there. I recomend this season highly.

Your typical season of DS9. The war with the Dominion has begun, and they are in control of DS9. Not a bad season over all, but not my favorite. 5 would probably be my favorite.

Season Six aired the episode 'Far Beyond the Stars'. The title itself a 'tribute' to the titles SF stories have carried in the past.

In the episode 'Far Beyond the Stars', Captain Benjamin Sisko falls into a dream. In the dream, he's back on earth. The year is 1953. He's writer Benny Russel, and former crew members on Deep Space 9 are his co-workers at the magazine where he works, 'Incredible Tales'.

Benny and Kira (the female writer for Incredible Tales) are told, not to come in to work the next day, company photo day. Benny's given an illustration called 'Air Force Space Station 9' (which looks similar to Deep Space 9) and asked to build a story around the illustration.

Is he, 'Captain Sisko' federation officer and emissary, dreaming he works for 'Incredible Tales'? Or is he a simple writer, dreaming he's dashing 'Captain Sisko'?

When the story is complete Benny turns it in to his editor (Odo). Everyone likes the story, but Odo balks at the Negro captain in the story. "It's not believable", he says. Odo can't decide what to do with the story. Benny's told to come back later, to give Odo some time to think it over.

Odo calls Benny into his office, saying, he really likes the story about Captain Sisko and Space Station 9, but, can you change it? "Make the story, a dream of the Negro kid". Benny doesn't want the story changed. Odo finally gives in, and decides to publish the story.

1953, perhaps, is not a good time to be 'Benny'. He's called back to the office. Odo tells him, he wanted to publish this story, about Starships, the Federation, and friendship, but higher ups turned it down. In fact he's been given orders to fire Benny. Benny has a nervous break-down and collapses, "It's real!". "It's all real".

I was raised (in a sense) on Star Trek: The Next Generation. But as a sci-fi fan I came of age watching Deep Space Nine, especially the final 3-4 seasons. I've seen it all, many times over, and in my opinion Season 6 of Deep Space Nine is unmatched in the Star Trek canon and is one of the best seasons of television from the 1990s, in any genre.

Something you need to know:

-you're going to enjoy watching this a lot more if you're already familiar with and interested in the Star Trek universe, and especially if you're familiar with the previous 5 seasons of DS9. I recommend them all, so if you're coming to this cold turkey you should maybe check out season 1 first. Why? Well, Season 6 (and 7) represent a climax of all the plotlines and story threads that had been developed since the 1st and 2nd seasons of the show, and the risings and fallings, the emotional weight of the stories just isn't going to have the same impact if you're not (somewhat) aquainted with the character's back story.

If you are familiar with the earlier seasons of DS9, well, what are you waiting for? I suppose the most likely viewer of this item is someone who remembers the series from television in the 90s and is considering owning it for re-viewing. For those of you who for whom the show is completely alien, well, now's as good a time as any to get into it, but for those of you who're mulling over whether it's worth investing in the show, I'd like to go through some of its moments of genius to demonstrate why you should pluck down the cash.

'In the Pale Moonlight' - IMO televised Trek's finest hour. No episode of DS9 so ably depicts the moral compromises and 'new Trek' that the show was exploring. Sisko and his crew didn't have the luxury of the moral high ground and unlike their predecessors sometimes had to choose between the lesser of two evils - which is precisely what happens in this episode. I simply can't recommend it highly enough - I think this hour of television is great and if not for its place in a niche subculture could be considered alongside great films and those rare sublime moments on television.

Waltz - great heroes are ennobled by great villains, and 'Waltz' provides our best look yet at the complex psychology of a madman, Dukat, who contrasts so poorly with the nobility of Sisko. The moral simplicity of previous Trek villains (the Borg) or their flippancy (Q) simply don't exist in Dukat, a truly evil and deeply disturbed man who is yet simultaneously capable of benevolence. Again, in DS9, morality is never clear, and though there is a dichotomy in Waltz the lines are still blurred.

Who Mourns for Morn - good comedy is harder to write than good drama, anyone who's put pen to paper knows this. This is a deligtfully light episode amidst a season of darker ones, that explores the history of one of the many secondary characters on the show, the beloved, if unheard, Morn. The supporting cast of characters was of course one of the best things about DS9.

Inquisition - introduces Section 31 and yet another Federation moral compromise. It's so typical of DS9 in episodes like this and 'In the Pale Moonlight' to make Federation officers less like the moral robots of previous (and concurrent) series and at the same time more human.

I could go on and on about every episode, because the season is near flawless (with one notable exception - the less said about Profit and Lace, the better). If you've read this far and you're not convinced, then I suggest you move on. But I don't suggest you do.

Remember watching this flick in LA, could'nt remeber if it was a hit, or one of those U just could have skipt all together. It was one of those!
Story stinks,creature sucks, actors to!U will enjoy Leviathan and Deep Rising, much more don't waste money or time, this is a stinker!

Deep Star Six.......2007-01-10

Good movie if you can appreciate its time. It holds nothing to these new space age special effects horror movies. I love the horror movies of the 80's and early 90's and Deep Star Six is one of my favorites.

almost a 'B' movie.......2006-10-05

The monster was pretty fake. The jokes were corny. The special effects...were there any? The underwater shots were grainy. At times, it was over-acted. This movie was so-so. It won't scare you. The Alien series or The Cave are much better. This movie may have been okay in its day, but times have changed...and movie making have improved a lot...a whole lot. Skip this flick.

ok yes i know,it's a monster movie without a monster(well we see very little of it),it's really more an action movie underwater(the first of three that year,and the least),in five mins. you already can see who will live and who won't,and most f/x shots of the outside are so dark you can't see anything,it's all this and more, but ,but....i still like it!!!
if you are in the mood for it it can be fun.

80' Sci-Fi on a budget. Gotta love it man........2006-03-13

Of the two 80's "what lies beneath the surface of the sea" sci-fi flicks (leviathan being the other) this one had a very attractive male cast. Greg Evigan was fun to watch wet not to mention Matt McCoy's delicious blue eyes.

The story was lack luster and the female characters were less than 2 dimensional, they were 1 dimensional if that's even possible and the creature wasn't near as menacing as the Leviathan beastie. It was like a goofy cockroach.

Overall though it is still a fun flick to watch, but will really only appeal to lovers of the underwater suspense horror flicks, which is kind of a niche thing at best.
