The swashbuckler genre bumped into science fiction in 1954 for one of Hollywood's great entertainments. The Jules Verne story of adventure under the sea was Walt Disney's magnificent debut into live-action films. A professor (Paul Lukas) seeks the truth about a legendary sea monster in the years just after the Civil War. When his ship is sunk, he, his aide (Peter Lorre), and a harpoon master (Kirk Douglas) survive to discover that the monster is actually a metal submarine run by Captain Nemo (James Mason). Along with the rollicking adventure, it's fun to see the future technology that Verne dreamed up in his novel, including diving equipment and sea farming. The film's physical prowess is anchored by the Nautilus, an impressive full-scale gothic submarine complete with red carpet and pipe organ. In the era of big sets, 20,000 Leagues set a precedent for films shot on the water and deservedly won Oscars for art direction and special effects. Lost in the inventiveness of the film and great set pieces including a giant squid attack are two great performances. Mason is the perfect Nemo, taut and private, clothed in dark fabric that counters the Technicolor dreamboat that is the beaming red-and-white-stripe-shirted Kirk Douglas as the heroic Ned Land. The film works as peerless family adventure nearly half a century later. --Doug Thomas

4 out of 5 stars Arronax Redux.......2007-08-27

20,000 LEAGUES UNDER THE SEA was the most expensive movie ever filmed at the time of its 1954 release. A great adaptation of Jules Verne's surprisingly prescient 19th Century novel, LEAGUES stars James Mason as the cultured, world-weary cynical genius Captain Nemo, designer and builder of the nuclear submarine "Nautilus." The cast is rounded out by Kirk Douglas as macho harpooner Ned Land, Paul Lukas as Professor Arronax, and Peter Lorre as Conseil, all of whom have been taken prisoner by the half-mad Nemo.

James Mason is perfect as Nemo. A romanticist and a scientist, Mason's Captain Nemo is brother to Walter Pidgeon's Doctor Morbius of FORBIDDEN PLANET (1956). Nemo, the custodian of arcane secret knowledge, has lost faith in humanity, and has isolated himself aboard his self-sustaining leviathan-like submarine. Half Cutty Sark and half Martian spacecraft (the set design is very reminiscent of George Pal's 1953 WAR OF THE WORLDS), the "Nautilus" boasts a library full of classics, a Grand Saloon full of art masterpieces, and a full-sized pipe organ upon which Nemo plays Debussy's "La Mer" all day long.

Without a hope for humanity, Nemo's own humanity is hopelessly stunted. He routinely attacks ships of all types, sinking them with abandon, and putting surviving sailors to death. Although he briefly considers sending Arronax back to the family of nations with the news of his many discoveries, his innate cynicism overtakes him.

Nemo and his ship are attacked by a giant squid in a classic film sequence. It is the unpolished, ill-regarded Ned Land, whom Nemo despises, who saves him. In the end, Land's efforts come to naught as Nemo takes his secrets to a watery grave.

In this amazingly memorable film, Disney literally spared no expense in providing the viewer with gorgeous and never-before-attempted underwater photography sequences, with a fascinating rendering of the "Nautilus," with an adapted storyline which still holds its own 53 years later, and with a rock solid cast.

This is GREAT family entertainment.

What else can you say about a movie with James Mason and Kirk Douglas set beneath the sea. Excellent story, effects, acting etc......

5 out of 5 stars 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea.......2007-06-25

Rich rendering of the classic Jules Verne tale by Walt Disney was, at the time, the most costly picture ever made, and it shows. The re-mastering of this beloved fantasy adventure is visually breathtaking, with vibrant colors popping off the screen unlike films half its age. Veterans Lukas and Lorre are solid, and Douglas is amusingly over the top as Ned (he even sings!), but the brooding Mason inhabits Nemo like a second skin, carrying the movie. Imaginative and exciting, "League" does full justice to its venerable source, and constitutes top family viewing.

5 out of 5 stars Great Movie!.......2007-06-07

Amazon had what I wanted and the movie was just terrifc! My husband loved this movie when he was a child and I was so pleased Amazon had it to purchase! We got the movie well before it was promised!

5 out of 5 stars Great !.......2007-05-25

This book is the first science fiction I read as a child. The first time I watched this movie I was about 10 years old. Since then till date, I have not forgotten a single scene or dialogue of the film. This is a superb film and quite advanced technically, for it's time. James Mason is the perfect Captain Nemo!

Customer Reviews:

1 out of 5 stars This is not a "classical".......2007-04-01

I used to watch Disney's version. However, I did heard of this new one. But never got a chance to watch fully. Now I did, by borrowed from library because of what I read those reviews...

For me, it is not my type. That is because of popular novel but it wasn't classical. From what I see is more of modern... romance... Nemo wants to stop earthquake? Jules Vernes showed that Captain Nemo attacking ships for some reasons. I see very, very, very little of it in this new version.

This movie already put me to yawn level. I am sorry. Too modern like those that involves romance. Octopus wasn't attack Nautilus. Weird submarine. Did they copy part of Darth Vader/Luke Skywalker where Luke lost his hand? I am glad I didn't buy it. Just borrowed.

1 out of 5 stars Truly awful.......2007-03-18

The only things this film has in common with Verne's great novel are the names of some of the characters and the submarine itself. Even Michael Caine was unable to salvage this one. Easily the worst film I have seen in years.

2 out of 5 stars The Mark of Caine.......2007-02-21

Protracted and tedious, this American TV adaptation is short on imagination and long on (tiresome) screen minutage. The effects work is weak, as is the charmless script. The only saving graces are some nice production design, especially the Nautilus' interior, and another spirited performance by Michael Caine, who is always a class act. However, despite Caine's performance, this rates a poor second to the Ben Cross version, also available through Amazon. That isn't great either, but at least isn't so retina-scorchingly long.

4 out of 5 stars With Respect for the Jules Verne Classic Novel.......2006-05-27

Few knew when Jules Verne was writing his futuristic novels in the 19th century that such entertaining page-turners would foretell so much reality. In this 1997 adaptation of Verne's '20,000 Leagues Under the Sea' the screenwriter (Brian Nelson) and director Rod Hardy have elected to pay homage to the scientific aspects of the thriller rather than make the story into a cartoon. And though it is a long song (3 hours), it plays well and introduces some fine special effects and philosophical statements about environmental issues, slavery, feminism, familial relationships, and commitment to dreams. Not bad for a Sci-Fi novel!

The cast is solid: Patrick Dempsey makes a wholesome, handsome Pierre Arronax, Bryan Brown as the driven sailor Ned Land, Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje is excellent as Cabe Attucks (nice to see this fine actor in a role far different than the one he played on the TV series 'Oz'), John Bach is the arrogant father Thierry Arronax, and Mia Sara serves up the beefed up role of Mara nicely. But the submarine mysterious ship Nautilus surfaces or sinks at the hands of Captain Nemo and while Michael Caine isn't the embodiment of evil we so often see, he finds the soul of the driven scientist whose goal is to protect the 'surface' he has forsaken to scuttle the seas in search of ways to stop future earthquakes topside.

Originally made as a mini-series for television in 1997, the movie for sails along, holding our attention and fascination for the full three hours, not only because we care about the characters, but also because we are treated to some spectacular underwater sequences and a Nautilus that is as elegant a vessel as Verne described. And yes, Captain Nemo still plays the pipe organ as part of the musical score. The script gets a bit on the corny side, especially in the areas of father son relationships, and the unnecessary spin on romances that seem to be de rigueur in keeping an audiences attention. But in the end this is an entertaining interpretation of the Jules Verne classic that still stimulates our thinking and challenges our concepts of environmental concerns. Grady Harp, May 06

5 out of 5 stars Micheal Caine is Captain Nemo.......2006-05-25

This isn't just a movie; it's a ride on the Nautilus. There is no comparison between this version and the Disney one; they are two completely different entities. This version is much more intelligent and mature. The characters are treated with respect and portrayed believably by an incredible cast. Everything on the ship and in the underwater scenes are pure eye-candy.

1 out of 5 stars A slap in the face to any Jules Verne fan!.......2007-03-15

I have to be honest I only watched the first ten minutes of this hunk of junk. I ussually will soldier through a movie if I have put my money into it, but I could not watch this. It's the first movie I've ever seen that truly does blow harder than water shooting out of a whales blow hole.

1 out of 5 stars appalling, atrocious, and absolutely horrible.......2006-09-09

In my 40 years, there have been about 3 movies that I walked out of. My wife and the thought of writing this review is the only reason this poor excuse for a movie wasn't the fourth. Other than havine a submarine and a captain named Nemo, this movie had nothing to do with the book. Nemo now appears to be a righteous Middle Eastern terrorist of sorts whose kingdom was robbed from him by the "Armies of the West". He is smitten with the professor's daughter, who of course is in love with the no good harpoonist who I am sure will provide for her needs wonderfully and be very supportive of her future research efforts. Nemo of course keeps the submarine well stocked with makeup, hairdryers, curlers, and dresses, but inexplicably our heroine only manages to find one dress worth wearing for the entire voyage. Incidentally, the crew is all dressed in uniforms constructed from the silk of some exotic shellfish, unfortunately, the producers couldn't be bothered to show the room containing the first operational deep sea weaving loom for making a variety of fine silk fabrics while cruising beneath the waves. Amazingly, Ned the harpoonist is now the only man on the ship with enough testosterone to throw a harpoon into a sea monster. I have a newfound respect for the lifetime of learning it must take to be able to properly through a spear into a large animal at the mind boggling distance of "four harpoon lengths". Also, you'll be intrigued to know that Nemo no longer wrestles with the giant squid, but the new monster du jour is a "proto-leviathan" created to prove the theory of "static evolution". Proto-Leviathans apparently look like a giant manta ray, swim at 5000 fathoms beneath the ocean, and somehow manage to keep their mouth full of air while attempting to swallow their underwater prey.

If you long for bad dialog on the level of "Attack of the Killer Tomatoes", bad science on the level of "Attack of the Killer Tomatoes", and plot holes big enough for a blue whale to swim through, this is the movie for you. Don't hesitate! Click buy it now! I laughed through the entire movie, despite the fact that I don't believe the scriptwriter put a single joke in the movie!

1 out of 5 stars Should sink 20,000 Leagues its so bad.......2006-08-23

This movie is apallingly bad. I found that it has only a casual resemblance to the Jules Verne novel. Aside from the Nautilus and Nemo, the rest of the story is made up from scratch, and is not very imaginative. The special effects are lackluster, and obviously cheap CGI work (a la Sci Fi Channel productions). The story only vaguely resembles the Verne plot, with romance playing a large part of the new interpretation. The dark soul of Verne's Nemo is lost, as is Nemo's twisted notion of waging war against the nations of the world, to end war and human suffering. Its on TV enough, along with another similar remake, to avoid buying this sinker.

3 out of 5 stars Entertaining- but Disney needn't worry.......2006-01-17

Hallmark's version of Jules' Verne's , 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea is entertaining, but suffers from the producer's need to rewrite the story to entertain the widest possible audience. The character of Conseil was dropped to add a love interest in the form of Arronax's daughter, Sophie. The squid is gone too- replaced by a monsterous, star wars universe, creature known as a "proto-leviatian". Though lavish by tv-movie standards, it's obvious that the budget was tight for such an ambitious project. The characters are adequate, but are too modern in speech and character- Ned Land in particular is just your average jock spouting
such lines as, "whatever." Of particular interest is the Nautilus- the production designer did his homework and attempts to put a true Verne
version on the screen, complete with retractable steering house and
triangular ram. Unfortuately, darn little of this is seen onscreen and it would have been nice to have been given a minor tour- though the budget may have killed this. Inside the sub is too modern-and probably
way too large compared to exterior views. The diving shots are nice and try and convey the beauty of the ocean. Anyone familiar with a produce section will recognize some very obvious squash and oranges the divers pluck from the sea floor amid some common variety silk plants! Still, enhanced by a nice music score, it's a nice ride- but if you're only going once- go with the Disney version.

5 out of 5 stars 20,000 leagues under the sea.......2005-10-14

I found it better than the 1954 version. I liked the "leviathan" better than the squid, and the rest was just BETTER!

Description

Released by Universal in 1916, "20,000 Leagues Under the Sea" was the first great special effects spectacular of early cinema. Based on the Jules Verne novel, the story concerns a team of scientists investigating a series of naval disturbances who find the culprit is the Nautilus, a submarine piloted by Captain Nemo, a hate-driven renegade seaman. Over a year-and-a-half in production, "20,000 Leagues Under the Sea" is a colorful recreation of Verne's science fiction classic.

4 out of 5 stars Spectacular for its time.......2007-09-10

With all famous, classic stories which have been remade several times over the decades, it can be difficult not to compare one version with the other, especially when one of them was made in the middle of the silent film era. So it's important to keep in mind that this early 1916 version of Jules Verne's classic was a state-of-the-art superior production at that time, complete with exciting battle scenes, special effects and even the first real underwater photography. The film even opens with a credit to the two inventors of the new underwater camera, as well as a suitable little tribute to Jules Verne's amazing foresight as he described submarines and other futuristic things half a century before they were invented. Keeping all this mind, viewing this silent version of "20,000 Leagues Under the Sea" becomes a whole new adventure, and even though the underwater shots, old-fashioned diving suits and short battle scenes are humdrum for us today, they are still of good quality even by today's standards, and must have been an exciting spectacle for audiences back in 1916.

While not entirely faithful to Verne's original, the story is quite interesting and involves far more than just showing off the technology of the period with many underwater and submarine scenes. In fact, for a 1916 production, this film is particularly sophisticated on various levels, and with careful editing the lives of three different groups of people are related, leading to a climax which shows how all their paths cross and how they are connected. There is Captain Nemo with his mysterious quest for revenge, some balloonists who become stranded on an island where a wild girl lives, and then the man plagued by a guilty conscience who returns to this island in search of the girl. Besides some intriguing plots and drama, there is some good action (by 1916 standards, that is) including a diver wrestling a giant octopus. Together with a newly-made musical score of both piano on its own at times, then other instruments, the overall effect is of an interesting film with much variety, quite apart from its historic significance as being a pioneer of underwater photography and other exciting action effects of its time.

3 out of 5 stars A story within a story within a story.......2006-06-19

Prince Daaker AKA Captain Nemo has searched 20,000 leagues under the sea for revenge. The daughter of Prince Daaker (Lois Alexander) was abducted. Prof. Aronnax (Dan Hanlon) is invited by the US navy to track sown a sea monster that is interrupting shopping. He takes his daughter (Edna Pendleton). A balloon is blown off course and carries four men to the south pacific. An evil yacht owner looks for a girl from his past. All of these stories and the story of a Child of Nature in a chic leopard skin outfit will converge on a mysterious island for the final scenario.

We find this version of 20000 Leagues Under the Sea quite different from the Disney version. The special effects are more vantage and they spend more time explaining how the physics of the underwater suits, crystal "magic window", and underwater guns, work.

There are a few things that one must take in account for the times. Nemo looks like a goat herder. The giant octopus looks much more like the octopus in the John Wayne move Wake of the Red Witch. The underwater guns look like Winchester lever action. Where did the Child of Nature get her leopard skin? How did Nemo obtain his technology? Not the most plausible story.

There is also a long long under water filler scene. However there is excellent underwater photography by the brothers George and Ernest Williamson.

Other than that is fun to watch.

3 out of 5 stars An interesting piece of history but not much of a movie.......2006-05-01

The 1916 version of 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea was a landmark in special effects in its day, but 90 years on it's a mere historical curiosity. It's not that it's particularly bad, more that it's very flatly directed even for its day and the passage of time has dealt it some particularly low blows. Although in the first draft of the novel Nemo was clearly identified as a Pole waging a private war with Russia before Verne's publishers and the French censors objected, the film goes off on its own to make him a wronged Indian Prince (Allen Holubar) with a penchant for wearing Santa Claus suits: the fact that his crew alternately seem to be dressed as elves or pastry chefs does not help matters much. Then there's his long-lost daughter, introduced as a `child of nature' skipping and dancing through the jungle in so insipid a manner that she even scares off the cheetahs. Looking like a cross between a young Bette Midler playing Elmo Lincoln in blackface and Spike Milligan playing Little Eva while being poked with a cattle prod, Jane Gail's performance is every negative clich? about silent movie acting incarnate. Little of Verne's episodic plot remains: having introduced Professor Aronnax and Ned Land, the hunting trip aside, the film promptly ignores them for the rest of its running time in favor of a plot drawn loosely from Verne's other Nemo novel, Mysterious Island. Still, it's watchable enough even if it doesn't give Richard Fleischer's 1954 version much of a run for its money.

1 out of 5 stars There have been better movies........2004-12-26

Although there are indeed historical aspects to this picture, on the whole, it's a bit dull and lame. It bears very little resemblance to Jules Verne's story, and later versions were better. Those who grew up with the 1950's Disney version, or later Sci-Fi channel remake, will be disappointed, and will not recognize much of the plot line...such as it is.

3 out of 5 stars Recommended as a Historic Artifact, But Nothing More.......2003-10-10

The 1916 version of 20,000 LEAGUES UNDER THE SEA is a perfect example of what can happen when a film relies primarily on special effects. In its day, it was widely celebrated as one of the first feature-length films to make use of underwater photography, and audiences thrilled to its scenes of coral reefs and sharks. But nowadays we're very used to seeing underwater photography, and of a quality that far surpasses that seen here. And the film has little else to offer.

The story, of course, is based on the Jules Verne classic--but "based" is the operative word. About the only thing this film version has in common with the Verne novel is the title, a few character names, and a few basic concepts, so if you're expecting a faithful silent adaptation of the novel you're outta luck. In this version, a scientist (Dan Hanlon) and his party go in search of sea monsters and run afoul of the Nautilus, but they soon discover that Capt. Nemo (Allen Holubar) really isn't such a bad guy after all. There's a subplot about a "child of nature" (Jane Gail) who lives on a "Mysterious Island" and who has some mixed experiences with shipwrecked sailors stranded there--and before the whole thing ends we are flashed back to colonial India for an explanation of just who Capt. Nemo really is and how he got that way. In the process there is underwater photography aplenty, including a faintly hilarious attack on a sailor by a 1916 special-effects-octopus.

The acting is extremely broad here, even for 1916, and Nemo's costume makes him look rather like a skinny Santa Claus gone bad. The Nautilus is uninspired and the cinematography is only so-so. Consequently, what audiences thrilled over in 1916 seems pretty clunky today. The film has not been well-reserved, nor has any attempt been made to restore it, and there isn't a single scene that isn't riddled with artifacts. This is really a film for die-hard silent film buffs rather than casual viewers, and even silent film buffs will probably find themselves hitting the fast forward more than a couple of times. Recommended as a historic artifact, but nothing more.

    1 out of 5 stars What a disappointment.......2000-09-08

Before I actually saw it, I expected full sound and gorgeous visual from the DVD title as I did from other excellent DTS titles. In addition, the novel under the same name written by Jules Vernue, enchanted my whole life when I was young. This title with 40 minutes running time in DTS/Dolby Digital format is a total disappointment. First of all, the movie squeezed the great story down to 40 minute nonsense. There is no inspiration or excitement I got from reading the original novel. You can never have any kind of Disney style amusement. Neither DTS or DD track gives you any quality sound you may expect from an average DVD. It is just loud! Even my 5 year old daughter who was given the title as her 5th birthday gift, after viewing 15 minutes "Daddy, can I swap this with your Elvis?" Please do not waste your bucks on this.
