Description

28 WEEKS LATER is sequel to the successful 28 Days Later.

The film pick up six months after the Rage virus has spread throughout the city of London. The United States Army has restored order and is repopulating the quarantined city, when a carrier of the Rage virus enters London and unknowingly re-ignites the spread of the deadly infection, wreaking havoc on the entire population. The virus is not yet dead, and this time it's more dangerous than ever!!

Great Flick.......2007-09-17

I thought that this was a great movie, intense and gory! The bloody scenes weren't scary but the possibility of this happening is what scares you the most. Seeing society decimated in both this movie and the prequel is frightening. The thought of being one of the only survivors of a rage virus is thought provoking. Can't wait for the third installment. Worth seeing.

You won't appreciate how great this movie was shot and how rich they are. I was stunned how great this movie was. It is Very different than the 1st. Cause this deals with a generation rebuilding and then shows what happens with chaos. How easily our government would turn on us (and I believe in a situation like this they would) and it was interesting to say the least.

So what's my complaints?

Spoilers (don't read if you don't wanna know)

1. Its annoying how fast the father gets turned and I find it hard to believe he would follow them but not successfully eat them.

2.I'm bummed that the military officer died
3.I wanted a little more closure for an ending. Unless they make 28 months later but that would be good only if they come up with a REALLY good story.

Anyways the pros outweigh the cons so therefor I give this 5 stars. Go see a first class horror film done right.

Surprised at the number of good reviews this is getting here.

"I wish Roger Ebert was still writing reviews because he would most definitely decry the "idiot plot" moment of "28 Weeks Later." It comes when Don (Robert Carlyle) decides to plant a wet kiss on his obviously exposed-to-infection wife, despite having seen the Zombies first-hand and knowing full-well how the infection travels and how it has pretty much decimated the population of Britain. I watched this at the Westlake Village Promenade today at 4:50pm with a crowd of mostly teenage guys and even a lot of them were shocked at how ridiculous this was." - Bryce Zabel, moviesmackdown

Big budget blood drenched sequel could have been so much better. Another ridiculous moment comes when they start firebombing part of the city--gee, why not just nuke all of London, if infrastructure destruction is not a problem, then you could be certain of extermination? Then the city is gassed, why didn't they do that in the first place? Well they have a big budget this time and lots of huge fiery explosions are obligatory I guess.

Another thing, the camera shakes WAY too much. What's going on? When the boy sees his father through the door, the camera moves very fast and next thing you know the rage has spread inside the quarantined building. What happened? Only by going slow-motion through this sequence can one see he breaks through a heavy locked steel door by simply banging on it. 300 people are trapped inside but one skinny infected gets in no problemo. The boy sure must be a good sprinter cause he gets from the door to walking over people 40 ft away in .5 seconds. And you know exactly what is going to happen when the rage hits a large crowd of people because it is described in detail in the first film (the airport story). I submit to you, a predictable scene does not make for a scary one no matter how much blood, screaming and unsteady camerawork you throw in.

The original had lots of slow parts with interesting dialog and scenery that made one think and give a breather between the scary parts. This movie just got on the bandwagon of all the bad ultra-bloody films that have come out since the original--Hostel, Saw, Hills Have Eyes, etc and, not to be outdone, is scene after scene of murder and mayhem. The one interesting idea in this one, that some can be immune, is not really developed except to spread the virus to show, you got it, more blood and gore.

The music throughout is THE EXACT SAME as in the original, they couldn't even get original music?? (Maybe they spent too much on those explosions)

Overall this was a big disappointment for me.

Some good ideas... but otherwise a simple rehash of the first film........2007-09-10

Well...

It was with a lot of anticipation that I went to see 28 WEEKS LATER - specially because I believe the first film, 28 DAYS LATER, was a genuine new look at the beloved Zombie genre.

But I got a little disappointed with this sequel because it does not offer much. The synopsis looks promising: weeks later, the original infected people on the UK dies... and the country is declared safe. So it is up to the British living abroad to come home and start again. And we meet this guy who has two kids (who were abroad on a school trip).

Suddenly, they find his wife (who apparently got attacked and died on the prologue). But she is fine... because she is immune to the disease. But she does has the virus... and it is only a matter of time until the whole thing starts again.

The problem with 28 WEEKS LATER is that the audience does not bond with any character. There is nobody there for the audience to empathize with. I feel some lack of focus in those characters... and the whole film becomes a escapist time-passing.

It was exactly the huge investment in characters that made the first film so good. But here... It's all missing.

That is not to say that there are not great moments. The intro (when the guy loses his wife) is well paced... the scene where the helicopter decapitates (oh, yes!!!) a group of infected is fabulous... and the best sequence is when the survivors drive away from the military dodging poison gas clouds on the streets of London.

But that's it.

Also... this film contradicts one interesting element presented in the first film. I remember (on 28 DAYS LATER) one character saying the infection had reached other countries. That does not seem to be what we see here. I got a little confused.

Still it is worth a look.

Horror-bad, action-good!.......2007-08-01

This is not a horror movie. This film does not compare well with horror movies. This is an action movie with zombies. It compares very well with other action movies. Starting where Resident Evil ended, the bullets start flying and the zombies start chomping immediately (do watch RE before this one). Although the script is hardly award winning, the movie delivers much more than you would reasonably expect from a video game based zombie movie. The actors are capable enough, and even if you find them stiff and generic, it's okay - most of them don't survive very long. Sadly, the comedy relief guy isn't funny at all and he does survive the whole movie. Also, the martial arts and special effects are good overall (except for the CGI Dobermans which are awful). Somehow the film avoids being predictable and sets up the last part of the trilogy nicely. Whether or not you've played the video game (I haven't), Resident Evil: Apocalypse is sure to satisfy cravings for a fast-paced action movie with sexy, gun-toting, butt-kicking babes if you can forgive a few rather forced script elements (like main characters strolling through a graveyard totally oblivious to the risk this involves during a zombie uprising!)

Good Sequel.......2007-07-06

This is a great sequel to the original. Although it didn't seem as dark and scary as the first, it made up for it in action. The movie picks up where the first one left off. As our heroine has escaped the hospital she finds a devastated world. She must find her only surviving friend and do what she can to bring the Umbrella Corporation down. She finds out more horrible truths about them and is assisted by a unlikely allie. Both movies complement each other nicely. I definitely recommend you add this to your Horror/SciFi collection. A must for anyone that owns "Resident Evil". I am looking forward to the third movie in this set.

This movie is almost perfect in its execution. Sure its still not completely faithful to the game but hey you cant have it all. This movie is so entertaining you will not even notice the time passing. Nemesis is scary and tough. The story is actually very good and entertaining as well. Siena Guillroy is excellent as Jill Valentine and Oded Fehr is a very good Carlos Oliveira. All in all a very entertaining good movie.

Fun to watch on the go!.......2007-05-09

RE: Apocalypse is a fun movie for me to watch, enjoying some of my favorite actors fighting through hordes of the undead to save a girl and get a way out of a locked down city before a nuclear explosion wipes everything out.

As a person studying abroad, I got the UMD for the reason that it's easy to watch on my PSP on the plane or late at night, not having a TV around to watch it on. And I don't have to worry about a larger disc being broken in transit or the case cracking.

A fun movie to watch, and compact enough to carry around easily.

R.E.: THE GAMERS VERSION........2007-04-28

When I first rented the original "Resident Evil" I was completely shocked at how much I liked it. I had zero expectations for it, yet was sucked in by it's story, characters and visualisation. So I ran out and purchased it (as soon as it was on sale). Since then I've watched it about 10 times, which is pretty remarkable considering I have roughly 350 DVDs to choose from. Given this, as a non-gamer, I was surprised to find that gamers were generally disappointed in this movie (not all of them, but most negative reviews were from gamers).

Now we have "Resident Evil- Apocalypse". Don't get to see "grown-up" movies at the theater, so I had to wait until the DVD release. I liked the first so much, I did not even think of renting this. I quickly bought the DVD (when it went on sale, never buy at full price)with much anticipation. Roughly 3 years later I have viewed it approximately (well, ACTUALLY)1 time. That's right, no type-o. JUST ONCE. It was not nearly as compelling as the first film (to me). Gone was the gripping story, the great camera work, the excellent character development. In the stead of this great stuff was some sort of "made-for-cable" goofy monster movie. Now, I did not hate it, (I actually like goofy monster movies) but it is not begging me to watch it again. It's so in-your-face that after one viewing, there was nothing left to see. No mystery. No subtlety. No sense of future dread. It was done.

But wow! Gamers really like it!! Now it all makes sense. Since I find shooter games extremely redundant and difficult to play more than once, I found this movie to be the same. A one timer (OK maybe 2). Kind of like sixth sense. Once you get to the end, well.. ...it's over.

Cinematically, comparing this to the fist film is like comparing the first "Star Wars" to the last (I'm talking release dates, not "Lucas-Time"). It's comparing something that is a carfully thought out and woven tale, to something that is simply a series of evens strung together to make a story. Kind of like Shooter video games. You travel down a linear path and take on what's in front of you. Unfortunatly this is a film!

I can't say don't buy this if you liked the first. It's nice to have a continuation of the first. Just don't go in with the same expectations.

28 "zombies" later.......2007-09-07

Ok, first and foremost..."28 days later" is not a zombie movie, no matter how it was marketed, or reviewed or talked about. The bad element of 28 days are people infected with a viral toxin (rage), that causes them to succumb to extreme violent acts. They are not dead, or undead. The do not devour their victims. They are not rotting...etc.

While 28 days shares familiar territory with Romero's classic Living Dead movies and an introduction to the lead character ripped from Day of the Triffids, the zombie genre ends there.

What "28 days later" is, however, is a very good low budget suspense flick with a great opener, a good middle section and an ok end section, which despite being entertaining kind of loses its way. It starts of well, with the actions that release "rage" virus and its scenes of a deserted London with unknown unseen danger and drips with atmosphere. People from Britain (or anyone whose spent some time in the city) could easily imagine themselves in Jim's dilemma, played admirably by Cork's Cillian Murphy.

Going into too much detail will spoil the suspense for those who haven't seen the film, but needless to say Jim eventually meets and runs away from the "infected", right into other survivors (including another Irishman Brendan Gleeson) who have been managing to hide out and stay "normal" in the face of overwhelming odds. Together this group decide to hook up with a military outfit that has set up the "answer to infection" in Manchester.

"28 Days Later" has enough to hold the viewer for its duration, in fact it rewards several viewings (I seen it three times now). But the budget constraints do show at times and the story does seem to run a little out of steam. It's very apparent that director Danny Boyle wasn't sure how to end the film and one is left a little let down at the films conclusion. This feeling may disappear however, now that "28 weeks later" is out and the second installment of the drama lets us into other areas of life in infected Britain, although I have yet to see that particular episode.

All in all, "28 Days Later" is an effective and entertaining film, with some fine scenes...but it ain't "Day of the Dead", but then again, nothing is.

Stop calling it a zombie movie.......2007-09-06

OK, 28 days later is an OK virus movie. A monkey that's been experimented on and infected with the "Rage" virus bites an activist who in turn is infected and attacks her mates. Explodes and you have a post-apocalyptic story with some great shots of abandoned streets and markets and some good chase scenes taboot. Add some great film treatments and good camera work and it's an edgy flick with some nice emotional touches.

BUT! It completely fails to be a Zombie movie.

Aside from breaking all conventions in Zombie movies, there aren't any walking dead. Between 28 days later and 28 weeks later, we find out that the infected, although usually killed through conventional zombie means (remove the head or destroy the brain) can also drown, bleed to death, asphyxiate, die from being gassed, starve, and be generally mauled. All their primary bodily functions are still going and that's what keeps them alive. Zombies (as originally portrayed in Night of the Living Dead) die and then start causing trouble.

If you don't look at it as a Zombie movie, it's an OK flick. If you're expecting a Zombie movie (and you know what a Zombie movie IS), you'll be disappointed.

ONE OF THE GREAT ZOMBIE MOVIES!!.......2007-09-01

a city ravished by disease, millions of zombies, only a few survivors, and you turn with just one drop of blood...crazy. loved this movie, i thought it was very well done. all the chaos, a world of the dead, where's saftey, how do you get out? i love zombies, i think they're the freakiest. they're people and they're dead, and all they want is to eat people. pretty damn scary. the whole movie was very good, i really liked it. i didn't get scared, but the film in general was wicked good. two thumbs up no doubt.

Charming, Poignant, and Inspiring.......2007-08-03

Having long been a fan of Sandra Bullock's, I expected 28 Days Later to be another one of her light-hearted, action-packed comedies (or are they comedy-packed action flicks?). I was in for a real surprise, however, as we are taken through the story of Gwen Cummings, played by Bullock, who is sent to a drug and alcohol rehabilitation center. At first she resists getting involved in the program, and refuses to admit that she has a problem, but as she gets to know her fellow patients and as she gets the chance to look deeper inside herself, she learns to accept that she does in fact have a problem, and only then is she able to have true hope for the future. She then wakes up 28 days later in the abandoned hospital only to learn that the world has changed drastically while she was in her unconscious stupor, and most people have been infected by a horrible and extremely contagious virus that turns even the kindest person into a hate-filled zombie filled with uninhibited violence. And she must face the question: who is the real enemy here? The blood-vomiting zombie-like infected who would love nothing more than to bite her throat out...or is the real enemy HERSELF?

Entertaining movie.......2007-08-02

Although the plot is not original this was a well made film. Good acting, good script, good directing and excellent camera work. Well worth seeing.

This movie is beyond words with a storyline that blows people away. It has so many hidden messages that it's not even funny. Very action packed with non-stop action. I would suggest that anyone should pay the money for this. Especially fans of the series....

Good, but the show is better........2007-08-25

I was really excited to buy this movie after I finished watching the show, and did so ASAP. I can't really say that I was disappointed per se, but the title of my review pretty much sums it up.

I enjoyed the movie, and any fan of Cowboy Bebop or just of anime in general will probably do the same, but if you are new the the franchise, I'd suggest you pick up the 26 episodes in "The Perfect Sessions" package if you want to see some really great anime.

Makes me crave more Bebop.......2007-06-23

Why was this show ended is probably a question millions of people wondered. Cowboy Bebop the Movie brings back the original cast with the same goal. Complete a bounty and collect that cash. This time their bounty is worth 300 million woolongs. Their target however, couldn't be anymore formidable. Its a man who possesses the expertise to kill the entire planet by spreading a virus with no cure. The movie contains all the elements that makes the series so great. Excellent soundtrack, good animation, action, and comedy. The only down side is in the beginning the movie really drags and takes a while to pick up. When it does gets going it can be pretty entertaining.

If your new to Bebop then you should checkout the series. It contains all the character development and background on how they all met. The movie doesn't contain any of that. So someone new would definitly feel the character development is lacking. Checkout the series first simply because its really good. Cowboy Bebop isn't considered a classic for nothing.

Leaves you wanting more.......2007-05-17

The series had been recommended to me by a fan. Since I am over 40, there is only so much young viewer targeted anime that I can stand. So, since I enjoyed the series very much I thought I would try out the movie.

I was a little disappointed that it took so long to get moving. I think the first half hour or so is a bit slow, but hang in there. It does finally pick up the pace and stays at that "bebop" flow for the rest of the movie. It is most enjoyable. The English Dub is good, and I am a fan of Steven Blum's. However, I do like to also listen to the Japanese and do the subtitle thing since my Japanese comprehension is 1 word in ever 200. I haven't had a chance to do that with this yet.

So, I heartily recommend this movie for the adult viewer whether or not you like anime. Hey, who isn't interested in a terrorist plot to wipe out humans and the lowly underdog who tries to undo it?

After the stiff attempts at realism in many recent features, it's a treat to see broad cartoon-style animation on the big screen in Osmosis Jones, a spoof of cop movies set inside the human body. The title character (voice by Chris Rock) is a street-smart white blood cell, working for Frank's immune system. He and Drix (David Hyde Pierce), an over-the-counter cold capsule, are reluctant partners fighting what appears to be a minor infection. Osmosis discovers Frank has really contracted a fatal virus, Thrax (Laurence Fishburne): he battles a corrupt body politic led by a venal mayor (William Shatner) to save Frank's life and win the affection of the mayor's aide, Leah (Brandy Norwood). Rock's motor-mouth delivery can get annoying, but it contrasts nicely with straight arrow Drix (imagine a fussy Buzz Lightyear). Excellent drawing and a powerful vocal performance make Thrax a genuinely frightening villain.

Osmosis Jones is about two-thirds animation and one-third live action, which is why two-thirds of the film is entertaining and funny, and one-third is not. The life Osmosis and Drix save belongs to Frank, a slob played in live-action sequences by Bill Murray, who's undercut rather than supported by Chris Elliott and Molly Shannon. Shamelessly over-the-top performances make the human characters seem flatter than the two-dimensional cartoons. The live action was shot by the Farrelly brothers and features lots of gross-out gags about zits, flatulence, vomit, snot, etc. The audience endures these leaden segments, waiting to get back to the animation--and the real comedy. Suitable for ages 9 and up: profanity, violence, bodily function jokes. --Charles Solomon

I bought this item on the suggestion of a student, who thought it might be good to show in our jr. high science class. I'm glad I previewed it first! I'd caution other teachers and parents on the amount of innuendo in this film... also, as a viewer myself, it just wasn't very engaging -- more depressing than anything else.

Visually stunning, and a likely must for John Woo aficionados, the second Mission: Impossible outing from megastar Tom Cruise suffers from an inconsistent tone and tired plot devices--not only recycled from other films, but repeated throughout the film. Woo's famed mythic filmmaking is far from subtle, with heroic Hunt frequently slow-motion walking through fire, smoke, or other similar devices, replete with a white dove among pigeons to signal his presence. The emphasis on romance is an attempt to develop character and a more human side to superspy Hunt, but still the dreary story proves a distraction from the exciting action sequences. John Woo's MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE 2 is a sight for the eyes and a joy for the ears. Unfortunately, that's really about it. Easily the weakest of Tom Cruise's M:I series, M:I2 is also the most non-canon of the three in terms of character writing and design. While the first and third films in the series featured a gritty style with just enough action to get the pulse running, M:I2 is all action. Outrageous action. Slow-motion gun battles, dueling motorcycles, and explosions are the name of the game this time around, with Woo lending his signature doves and run, gun and dive gunplay to the franchise. Unfortunately, this comes at the expense of anything resembling a story. You see, Mr Robert Townsend, who co-wrote the first film, was told that the first's plot was too complicated for audiences, and was basically asked to write in filler to take place between the elaborate explosions. Still, Townsend writes some great filler, with Anthony Hopkins coming on board in an uncredited role and delivering the film's best lines. Hans Zimmer provides the film's score, which while hardly original, fits the mood of the picture perfectly, conveying the larger-than-life summer action feel brilliantly. Acting is about what you'd expect from a film of this kind, and while the visual style is slick and the action pieces breathtaking, both feel out of place. MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE worked because it wasn't James Bond, but stood on its own two feet. That's sadly not the case with M:I2, as other than the music and visuals, the film is too busy chasing after 007 to amount to anything. Finally, the character of Ethan Hunt spends the entire film acting atypically when compared with the first and third films. Here, he comes across as a thrillseeker while in the others he's more pragmatic. My advice: Watch the first, skip the second, and move right to the third.

It's just an action movie.......2007-03-05

I think this movie was rated bad by people because it was so different from the first one. I went to watch this movie thinking it was going to be long, kinda drab but still in its own way interesting like the first. But instead it added a few things that the first one could have used like ACTION. I think this movie was a good combination of a modern action movie well balanced with
technical expertise and suspense. This movie had a sexy feel that flowed smoothly throughout the movie that just kept you hook until the end. Tom Cruise is Ethan Hunt. Anthony hopkin and Ving Rhames where also good elements added for this movie.

MI2: Revisited.......2006-06-21

Yeah, I know. It's so easy to 'dis this flick. And hey, the first time I saw it, I was not a huge fan either. However, I happened to catch this movie again the other day.

Now, I am of the opinion that a movie's first and foremost job is to entertain -- not to enlighten, not to inform, not to make us feel more intellectual because we have plowed the shadowy depths of a film's varied and multi-layered philisophical underpinnings. If a movie fails to entertain, then it has failed utterly. I don't care how successful it is on any other front.

MI2 is a very entertaining movie. You can't take your eyes off of it. The action is completely engaging and there's just enough plot and dialogue in between. I know, I know; you guys all want to look cool and agree with the rest of the sheeple, er, filmgoers by dismissing this flick as mere fluff, but if you're looking for any sort of depth from this sort of fare, what in tarnation were you thinking???

This movie is entertaining, therefore it succeeds.

Almost "2" Impossible To Watch.......2006-06-06

"Mr. Hunt, this isn't Mission: Difficult, this is Mission: Impossible. Difficult should be a walk in the park." - Commander Swanbeck makes sure that Ethan Hunt is well aware he is in "Mission: Impossible 2"

Tom Cruise stars in, while John Woo directs a lackluster sequel, to the original "Mission", that has so many outlandish action sequences it's almost too cartoonish to watch.

Taking place a few years after "Mission: Impossible", "M:I 2" has a rogue IMF agent, Sean Ambrose, stealing the vaccine to a highly deadly genetic enhanced virus that can infect the world's popluation within a week of it's release.

The IMF assigns Ethan Hunt to the mission. Ambrose disguises himself as Hunt early on in the film, to steal the vaccine from it's creator, making Hunt itching for some payback, & at first, making the IMF question Hunt's loyalties.

Ethan must first, contact & hook up with Nyah Nordoff-Hall, a thief & former lover of Ambrose's. Second, Ethan has to not only retrieve the vaccine, but, also must get to the virus before Ambrose does. Easier said than done, after all this is "Mission: Impossible".

"M:I 2" is easily the weakest of three "M:I" movies. Although, the plot is pretty solid, their are some holes. The big one for me, was at the end of the film when Nyah is infected. Her symptoms are nowhere near as bad as the scientist at the beginning of the film. She's concious, there is no blood loss, & she just seems to be stumbling around like a drunk (yeah, she looks infected to me & I totally f**king bought it).

This is Tom Cruise's vanity project. I know between takes somebody had a mirror in front of him, making sure somebody loved him.

Dougray Scott was originally offered the role of Wolverine in "The X-Men", but, due to over shooting on this film he had no choice but to pass on the role. Enter Hugh Jackman. Snikt! Exit Dougray Scott's career.

The action is a bit much in this film & is the absolute big drawback to "M:I 2". A few action sequences mirror too much of past Woo films.

The motorcycle chase reminded a little bit of "Hard Target" & when Hunt & Ambrose do the chest bump off the motorcycle's it reminded of a similar sequence from "Face/Off".

"M:I 2" is a decent film, that I expected much more out of both Tom Cruise & John Woo, & if it self destructs in five seconds, I won't lose sleep over it.

AWFUL.......2006-05-31

This movie was not only stupid, but it also stained the MI series with a huge inconsistant sequal. The storyline is just plain shaky. Tom Cruise was NOT the Ethan hunt that he was in the first one. He turned into some into some guy who laughs at everything, he lost ALL of his charm that he had in the first movie. This was a TERRIBLE MOVIE!!! The characters were so differnet then the first one, and gosh the worst part of this movie was how inconsistant it was from the first one. Only buy this if you absolutly have to, but let me warn you, it is a WASTE!!!

A sneaky and surprisingly smart horror flick, Cabin Fever sets up all the cliches of its particular subgenre (what might be called the "sexy young people go into the woods" horror movie, featuring hostile redneck locals, dead animals on hooks, cars that suddenly stop running, etc.) and by the end has played a clever twist on every standard element, often to darkly comic effect. What's the plot? Well, five sexy young people (Rider Strong, Jordan Ladd, Joey Kern, Cerina Vincent, and James DeBello) go to an isolated cabin where they contract a nasty bacteria that eats their flesh; this, combined with a bad-tempered dog and a party-loving police deputy (Giuseppe Andrews, giving a particularly funny performance), leads everyone into confusion and bloody chaos. i was supprise to see all the bad reviews. i happened to enjoy this movie. the story is about a group of teens that decide to rent a cabin in the woods. they get there only to find theve been exposed to a nasty little skin virus. this movie has just the right about of gore and funny one liners to make it worth watching at least once. my favorite charecter.. the ranger/rent a cop kid who keeps saying " do you EVEN realize how many amazing parties we're gonna have man?" haha classic!

Cabin Fever has a weirdly unique place in the recent horror movies in that it's not completely part of that "torture porn" crop of movies that focus mainly on disgusting audiences than outright terrifying them. Cabin Fever on the other hand wants to be a horror film like seen a lot during the 70's. Problem is the film has an identity crisis in that it doesn't know what it wants to be. A funny horror movie? A scary comedy? Sometimes that dual personality works but here it feels too disjointed...plus it's kinda bad too.

Taking the familiar theme of a group of teenagers into the woods, you'd think some mask-toting killer with stalk ever so slowly after them right? Wrong. Turns out, the cool guy and the sex bomb, the awkward teen and the sweet chick and a lunkhead have to deal with a flesh-eating disease, a rabid dog and weird locals. You know, the usual.

That's pretty much the plot in a nutshell. Granted, it's nice to see a new killer wiping out the kiddies but even then, it's still a little thin. Not to mention these are some of the illogical choice-making kids ever and in the horror genre, that's seriously saying something. One character, the sweet guy, decides to fondle the object of his desires since grade 8...while she's sleeping. Yes, that's right, sleeping. And when said girl has to be sheltered off somewhere, he decides to have sex with the sex bomb. Figures he might as well get in some sex since he knows he's going to die anyway. Or maybe he's just dumb.

The disjointed feel comes in the way of humor adding in. There's the infamous "pancakes" scene that feels like it should be in a parody of bad kung fu movies then horror. Was it meant to lighten the tension? Or is it just simply trying to be a funny movie mixed in with the gore stuff to set it apart from serious ilk such as High Tension. Either make it a straight ahead horror comedy like Army of Darkness or go completely for the horror.

Like Hostel, the DVD is loaded with more commentaries than anything. And of course, writer/director Eli Roth is everywhere with a track by himself, with the girls, the guys, Rider Strong who's so gabby he needs his own track and a filmmaker commentary. But that don't mean anything if it's attached to a good movie and in this case, it's all for naught.

I don't know if a horror fan will completely love it. From Saw to Shining, Cabin Fever is just somewhere else. Don't mean unique means quality either.

Not only with the movie itself, but with all these low reviews on it. Ive seen the movie quite a few times and its never failed to creep me out, or to entertain me. Ive always thought it to be one of the better horror films, especially with this new crap coming out. In my eyes this movie is 10x better than Hostel and many other horror films made around the last few years. It never trys to be a serious film and it never wants to be. Its a fun, thrill you, make you piss your pants type film. Just gory fun is the best way to describe it. This isnt the most graphic horror film Ive seen, but nevertheless it makes me feel sick everytime I watch it. To me the whole idea of just one little glass of water causing all this conflict is just scary because it feels like it could happen. Not to mention, I had a glass of water beside me during the whole film! Needless to say, I only took one little sip. I must be a coward, but the film can be very creepy. I really loved the effects in the film and the acting. Its just a fun horror flick. It succeeds as that very much. I enjoyed it a lot.

Run For Your Lives!!! It's the... uh... slow-acting, easy-to-detect disease..........2007-02-01

Not a good horror movie.

Cabin Fever, the story of teens who waste away from a flesh-eating bacteria while camping in the woods, sounded like it might have the potential to be a sort of ground-breaker. A slasher film where the "slasher" is disease? Tons of interesting possibilites, there. Sadly, this movie doesn't follow any of the cool new roads it had open to it, instead relying on the same tired formulas we've already seen a thousand times. Worse, though, is that none of those formulas really work in this movie, either. This isn't just cliche; it's cliche done poorly.

One of the basic problems Cabin Fever suffers from is this: the Stupid Teens of this film are only camping. It's not like they're in some remote jungle of South America or anything, so it's hard to understand how they can all waste away from a disease, since 1) they have a car, 2) there are plenty of other people around, 3) they know about the disease, and want to leave the campsite and 4) the disease takes some time to take over and has obvious symptoms.

So: how do we keep those Stupid Teens at the camp, despite the fact that they're being ravaged by a disease? By making them Extra-Super Stupid! Also, by coming up with a series of contrived coincidences and happenings to delay and deter their efforts to leave. And so, the kids manage to shoot up their own car (even then, it's still basically operable, but never mind that); there's a mean dog that they're afraid of, discouraging them from going outside; the local deputy is a dimwit party boy, and thus is no help; the town locals are Deliverance-style, and so actually scarier (and more villainous) than the disease is; the teens accidentally offend the other backwoods people in various ways.

It's just all... silly, when they could just, you know... drive away to a city or something and get help. But they don't do that, because the characters don't want to get in their "diseased car" and so they stay in the (healthy?) cabin in the (healthy?) woods.

In the end, and sadly, the disease just makes for a poor villain. Disease can't chase someone. It can't jump out from behind a corner. It can't hide in a closet. So, instead of the disease threatening our Teens, we need all sorts of other, contrived things to provide our suspense and death-sequences. Almost no-one in this movie dies of the disease--instead, they're accidentally killed by others, or shot by local yokels, or hit by cars, or mauled by dogs, etc. The diesase is just what makes everyone act like (more of) an idiot.

Except for Masque of the Red Death, Cabin Fever is the only disease-centered horror story I can think of. The idea has a lot of potential, but Cabin Fever takes advantage of none of it, instead relying on the same horror movie conventions that we've seen for almost thirty years. That would be okay if they were done well; they're not--the events in this movie feel contrived and corny and there's no real suspense or fright to be found. A complete disappointment.

When this film was originally broadcast on PBS in 1998, I had not heard of the 1918 Spanish Influenza. I was shocked that I had never heard of the 1918 pandemic, given the impact it had on the 20th century. I've now read every book I coould find that chronicles the outbreak. Some of the historical facts in the film may be disputed in other histories, but it's a solid documentary and I highly recommend it. It is a rivoting film.

I did relatively well in high school American history and yet I never heard of this national crisis. I guess World War I wasn't the only big deal of the 1910s. I am glad to see that the American Experience series not only covers great names, wars, and transportational feats, but also health concerns.

I recall that Charlie Chaplin's sweetheart died in a flu epidemic in Britain, but I didn't know the problem started in the United States. (If our revolution and our stock market crash can have global effects, I guess I should not be surprised.) It's easy to think of the bubonic plague as the world's only human international die-off. However, this film shows that it happened in the recent past too. This shows that savage diseases can be spread widely, unlike the localization of Ebola or SARS. I learned that the Titanic's sinking humbled early 20th-century modernists, but this flu outbreak must have been the same way. Nowadays, incurable diseases are usually associated with stigmatized groups. In contrast, this work clearly points to American soldiers, a well-respected group, as the cause of the spread.

This work proved the problem was cross-regional. This is not example of something on the East Coast being equated with all of America. The epidemic hit Philadelphia, but San Francisco, Nebraska, and the Dakotas as well. This work starts with interviewees waxing nostalgic about the pre-flu period. I thought it was offensive to think of a Jim Crow time as wonderful. However, this work compensates by interviewing an African-American witness to the crisis and a person recalling how a Native American group was affected.

In "Memoirs of a Geisha," one character says, "The interesting thing about wars is that you never know who will survive and who will not." This work revealed the same is true in epidemics. It was a bit anti-climactic how this crisis was resolved, but history doesn't usually have spectacular conclusions. After the bubonic plague, Europeans stopped killing cats and started killing mice. Because of AIDS, many are now practicing safer sex and cleaning drug needles. This documentary doesn't suggest that public health changed at all due to the flu. I'm surprised by that.

I usually don't care for scientific matters, but this work was informative and really has my wheels spinning.
