You don't fool with Mother Nature, spit into the wind, remake Casablanca, or trash the land of Oz. Perhaps that is why the 1985 live-action sequel split critics and audiences alike. The 1939 classic musical is so beloved that it's almost impossible to imagine seeing Dorothy in shock therapy, a crumbled yellow brick road, the ruins of Emerald City, and the Tin Man turned into stone. But L. Frank Baum, the author of the original Oz books, portrayed just that with his continuing stories of Dorothy. When you get by these tough facts, the film version is solid entertainment for the over-7 set.

Dorothy (a 10-year-old Fairuza Balk in her debut) is back in Kansas, where Aunt Em (Piper Laurie) is at the end of her rope: her niece is not sleeping and going on about a place called Oz. Therapy may be the answer, but luckily the scary clinic goes dark before Dorothy can be, er, cured (but the lead-up will scare the munchkins out of most kids). She wakes up in the land of Oz, now in tatters, and searches for its king, the Scarecrow. A new set of friends, including a tin soldier, a talking chicken, and a pumpkin man, help her against new villains, including Princess Mombi (Jean Marsh)--complete with a set of detachable heads--and the evil Nome King (Nicol Williamson with a great assist from Will Vinton's Claymation). The sole directorial effort of Oscar-winning editor Walter Murch is stuffed with marvelous effects that foreshadow later works by Tim Burton and the Henson non-Muppet films. --Doug Thomas

This is a great movie. I begins when Dorothy is back in Kansas and since she keeps talking about Oz, her Aunt and Uncle take her to a phychiatrist. A great storm comes up and she escapes the asylum and finds herself back in Oz again. It is a little darker side of Oz and it can scare little kids. Recommend age 10 and up. Not a cartoon.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful film, FAR better than the Wizard of Oz........2007-07-29

I was so happy when this film was finally released on DVD a few years back. I have such strong and fond memories of it from when I was a kid. Like most of us, I grew up with 1939 version of Oz, which frankly annoyed me. I liked the fantasy of it but I was not so much into the musical numbers. After awhile, it seemed too kiddie-like. I remember reading the book expecting it be a novelization of the movie but being blown away by how different it was. It was a bit more trippy in parts and it was slightly darker. There was so much that not in the movie.

Then Return to Oz came out and it was exactly as I imagined the land of Oz. Even though it keeps one or two of the aspects from the MGM version (the silver slippers are again instead ruby slippers, "There's no place like home", dual casting), it is really its own film and should not really be considered a sequel to the classic movie. It is less like vaudeville and more like a docu-drama that follows Dorothy on her journey. The actors are superb, especially Fairuza Balk. It is very easy (and common) for movies to collapse under the weight of an irritating child star (Jake Lloyd, anyone?). But Balk is never too precocious or saccharine. She's a little girl who has had an extraordinary thing happen to her that no one believes, and she feels isloated from the only real friends she's ever had. It's not a deep, psychological character exploration, it's just all there in her face and eyes and voice.

Yes, it's darker and maybe a little more scary than little kids are used to, but it's not violent or bloody or anything, just kind of bizarre. We're so used to sanitized versions of fairy tales that Disney specializes in that we've forgotten that most in their original forms are often much more disturbing and macabre than we think.

The design of the film is more like what is described in the books. I love the look of the Tin Woodsman in particular and I wish he had more of a part. But everything is faithful to the books, even though it's actually a combining of two different Oz books. There was such potential for a great series of films, it's too bad Disney sabotaged it. (Walt had bought the rights to the remaining books soon after the success of the MGM version, but nothing materialized until the 80's, just before the rights expired. The word is that Michael Eisner wanted the film to fail so that it would reflect badly on the leadership he was just replacing.)

The effects are remarkable for their time and are still pretty realistic today. I wish there was a special edition with cleaned up optical printing, you can really see the dusty layers of film in the scene in which Princess Mombi is changing heads. A proper Making of documentary would be great to see! The music is beautiful too. One can only wonder how much more convincing Oz can be with all the technology developed since 1984. The possible scope is certainly hinted at in Return to Oz; the end celebration scene includes many other characters from the other books like The Shaggy Man, Polychrome, the Patchwork Girl and the Frog Man.

The only real negative thing I have to say is that it does lack a certain emotional center. The main emotions are fear and excitement, but I don't feel as invested in Dorothy's motivation. She is simply having another adventure, and I think the theme of friendship and the fear of losing friends could have been a little more explored. Maybe because Walter Murch is more an editor than a director, the focus is more on story and action. But as a fantasy-adventure film, it's much more than most in the genre achieve. And as an adaptation, it is nearly flawless, despite the liberties taken.

All in all, a classic that should be in your collection!

3 out of 5 stars This Ain't Your Father's Oz.......2007-07-20

I became aware of this movie by reading the rave review on Film Freak Central, and their interview with director Walter Murch. Murch was the editor of The Godfather, Apocalypse Now, Cold Mountain, and Jarhead, and this is his first and only film. Anyway, liking dark children's movies as I do, I thought it sounded very intriguing and thought I'd check it out.

Now, my DVD player/surround sound system in a refurbished piece of crap, and sometimes the audio doesn't start right. So there I was, thinking this movie was really unusually prosaic, as all I was hearing was this beautiful, dreamy music, and no dialogue. It took me a while to realize that this was because my front speakers were not working, and I was just getting the music track on the rear speakers.

All of this of course required me to restart my machine several times, and it's during those times that one becomes really annoyed at the useless video tags put on at the beginning of some DVDs that you cannot skip through. In this case, the interminable [10 second] graphic that informs me that I am watching a DVD. Oh, thank you so very much, but you know, I put the disc in myself, so am pretty much aware that I am watching a DVD! But we all know that Disney wastes no opportunity to let us all know how very magical every single aspect of watching a Disney film is.

Thing is, this movie is about as far from fare one would associate with Disney as you can get. Adapted from two later books in the Oz series, this film takes place six months after the tornado that we saw in The Wizard of Oz. Now, while it's almost impossible to watch this film free of the influence of the other one, this movie immediately asserts its differences. For one, Dorothy is YOUNG. She's 10 at the very most, and this both gives a better context to the entire thing and makes more sense of the idea of her inventing this fantasy world. Another difference is that her life on the farm is portrayed here as much more rural and true to life, as this film was shot in real locations and not entirely in the studio. The third aspect is that this film is MUCH more dark, which is apparently closer to the tone of the actual books, which are akin to Grimm fairy tales.

It would seem that since the tornado, Dorothy, played here by the charming and adorable Fairuza Balk, has been unable to sleep. Aunt Em, here played by Piper Laurie, is worried about her inability to sleep and her continual talk about Oz, which of course she doesn't believe in. This makes this movie close in theme to one of my other favorite childhoood movies, The Curse of the Cat People, also about a young girl whose parents want her to pull her head out of the fantasy world she's in. So she takes Dorothy to see a doctor who specializes in electroshock, and they plan to keep Dorothy with them overnight and run electricity through her brain. You will know that you are not in your father's Oz when you see Dorothy STRAPPED to a gurney and hooked up to an electroshock machine. At this time you will also notice the wonderfully witchy outfit worn by his assistant, Nurse Wilson, with these great shoulder things that stick straight up. You should be paying attention to all of these people and things, because, as in the first film, they will all be processed and appear in disguise once Dorothy enters Oz once more.

You will also be aware that you are watching the work of someone who has been involved in movies for some time as you look at some of the beautiful compositions you see on screen.

Anyway, a power outage causes the electroshock machine to fail, and Dorothy and a mysterious girl make a mad escape through a terrible storm from the institute. Dorothy is swept down a raging river, very intense and scary, and it is soon after that she washes up in Oz. Oh, by the way, all this time she's accompanied by this hen, an extremely poor substitute for Toto, who utters dialogue akin to the droid Keystone Kops Komedy from the end of Star Wars Episode II, the kind that makes you want to strike yourself repeatedly about the head with a mallet. Please remove all heavy objects from your environment before viewing.

When Dorothy arrives in Oz we are greeted with another gorgeous shot of these wonderful trees, which she promptly settles under for a snack. During this time one sees that the ROCKS are watching her. It seems like a good idea to make rocks evil as... well, rocks SEEM evil, don't they? This is followed by a quite interesting scene of a rock speaking to his master, accomplished by stop-motion animating layers of clay to make it appear as though the crevices in the rock is forming a face as speaking. It is not realistic in any way, but one admires the craft and imagination required to accomplish this... and we're just getting started.

Dorothy soon sees that the Emerald City now lies in ruins, and all of its inhabitants have been turned to stone, including the Tin Man and the Cowardly Lion! [I told you it was dark!]. Dorothy sets about finding the scarecrow, and finding out what happened to her friends.

Along the way she meets a jack o' lantern on a body of twigs [whose appearance in the novels I'm going to guess was the inspiration for Jack Skellington from The Nightmare Before Christmas], and a tubby robot.

Soon what I find to be the freakiest scene in the movie happens, when Dorothy is taken in by a queen, who decides that she will lock the girl in a tower until she grows up, then appropriate her head. This woman takes Dorothy into a large chamber with walls lined with little glass chambers, each displaying a head on a pedestal. The heads are all alive, and their eyes silently stare at Dorothy [creepy] or follow the queen. The woman takes off her head and places it in one of these cases, and chooses another to wear. Later, Dorothy has to steal something out of one of the cases. The heads are all asleep. When Dorothy makes a slight noise, the head wakes up, and the entire hall of heads starts SCREAMING! This whole thing is horrifying and wonderful in the way of the best freaky children's tales, Alice in Wonderland being the best example.

So it goes on with more adventures, and special effects that mix stop-motion animation, puppetry, animatronics--whatever can be used, and while not all of it is successful, it is all interesting and one admires the film for its imagination and gung-ho attitude in attempting to conjure all of these things to life. Now of course they would all be accomplished with CGI, and unless the very best director were behind it all, it would all be boring as hell.

The ending becomes quite explosive, and peace is restored through a similar device to the first movie. This is added to similarities including a corollary but different group of companions through Oz, the natural calamity that brought Dorothy there in the first place, and the whole structure of the story, but these all make it part of a series rather than a tired retread.

While it is a kids movie and while it is a Disney movie, this film is, I would think, more of interest to adults who enjoy tales of the dark side of childhood. There are scenes so terrifying they could easy go into a standard horror movie. Not all of it works, but the dizzying display of creativity and the brave attitude to just run with it all makes this a very satisfying watch.

A movie's lasting value can often be measured by its influence in the years and decades following its original release, and on that basis Run Silent, Run Deep is certainly a classic of sorts. It remains one of the seminal World War II submarine pictures, and its intelligent script and tautly executed action are clearly echoed in such later submarine dramas as Das Boot and especially Crimson Tide, which borrows liberally from this 1958 film.

In one of his best and final roles (he appeared in only four films after this), Clark Gable plays a submarine captain without a command, having been saddled with a desk job after his previous ship was destroyed due to his overzealous pursuit of the enemy in dangerous Japanese waters. He finally gets another boat--this time with a vigilant first officer (Burt Lancaster), who stands poised to assume command if Gable puts his crew in unnecessary danger. The tension and mutual respect between these two principled men is superbly written and directed (Robert Wise was just two years away from his triumph with West Side Story), and the crucial inclusion of a strong supporting cast (including Jack Warden and Don Rickles) enhances the movie's compelling authenticity. Based on a novel by former submarine commander Edward L. Beach, Run Silent, Run Deep is rousing entertainment with the added benefit of paying honorable tribute to the men who navigated through the most frightening and claustrophobic channels of the Pacific theater. --Jeff Shannon

Description

"Rich" Richardson (Clark Gable) is a hard-driving, dedicated submarine officer with a single-mindedpurposeto seek out and smash the Japanese destroyer he believes sank his former ship. Given a new command, Richardson drills his men to the point of mutiny as he relentlessly trains them for the battle ahead. At last, word comes of the destroyer's position, and, disobeying orders, Richardson finally confronts his foe, unaware that an even greater enemy lurks nearby...one who's been targeting him for a watery grave. Co-starring Burt Lancaster as Gable's executive officer, this gripping WWII adventure-thriller set a new standard for submarine pictures. "Severely, nail-bitingly tense" (The New York Times), Run Silent, Run Deep is the most exciting film about the "silent service" ever made.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Under rated movie.............2007-09-16

I have seen this movie many times, and I think it's the often overlooked classic of World War II movies, Gable and Landcaster give splendid performances and the ending is very satisfying.

4 out of 5 stars High Action Under the Sea.......2007-06-28

Lancaster and Gable dynamically teamed up for a superb action yarn about the Pacific Fleet submarine service of WWII. This film has got to rank with the top-ten, all-time classic movies of WWII. The dramatic story line unfolds on a number of captivating levels, not the least of which is the on-going and developing interaction between the Captain of the American submarine (played by Gable) and his Executive Officer (Lancaster). The audience watches with nervous anticipation as the submarine (U.S.S. Nerca) heads for the most dangerous stretch of Japanese controlled ocean, the Bungo Straights in Patrol Area 7, home of the infamous Akikaze-class destroyer which has already killed four other U.S. boats. One of those unfortunate boats was commanded by Gable, who survived the sinking and managed to later convince ComSubPac that he could kill the Akikaze if given the chance to go back to Area 7 in another submarine. The admirals agreed and gave him command of the Nerca, whose captain had been promoted elsewhere. All's not well onboard the Nerca, however, as the boat's executive officer had expected the command would have been given to him. The crew have misgivings about the new Captain, especially when they discover where their sub is headed. The black and white film's durability into the 21st Century is largely a measure of the superb editing of actual ocean-going footage with the stark, cramped sets of the sub's realistic interior. The special effects are nowhere near the quality of today's modern technology, but are remarkable and credible, nonetheless. An exceptional part of this film is the often overlooked, and excellent musical score that strictly supports the suspense and emotion of the story, never overpowering or distracting the viewer, but consistently and unobstrusively carrying the viewer through one dramatic moment after another. There are a number of memorable scenes between Gable and Lancaster that are innately classic, and which would be almost impossible to duplicate should this film ever be remade. It was a tribute to the officers and men of America's "Silent Service" when it was made, and it remains so today.

5 out of 5 stars Run Silent, Run Deep.......2007-06-26

In veteran director Robert Wise's tense, trim "Run," an aging but vigorous Clark Gable plays Richardson with panache and iron determination. Wise creates just the right mood of simmering hostility via some pointed Gable/Lancaster by-play, and various telling incidents with the crew, which includes a young Jack Warden and Brad Dexter. Mounted by Lancaster's own production company, "Run" remains not only a riveting war film, but one of mega-star Gable's last shining moments. Also look for a future comic in the crew--the inimitable Don Rickles!

5 out of 5 stars One of the Top Sub Films of All Time.......2007-06-01

That guy with the mustache (from Crimson Tide), Cary Grant, puts in a great performance heading for the Bungo Straights with a new tactic to take revenge on the Japanese who sank his first submarine, with great supporting cast. One of the top five submarine film, a must for all fans.

5 out of 5 stars Taut and suspense filled........2007-05-29

Very good movie. Tense suspense filled adventure with a very convincing performance by the cast. Technically very realistic too.

2 out of 5 stars Deep cheap evil.......2005-12-05

The scary title of this movie makes a lot of promises, but sadly when the evil itself is revealed, you will be filled with disappointment. The special effects that are being used already look medieval these days and the aliens are hardly scary.
This movie is a sad attempt to combine some of the great stuff from other movies.(SARR)

3 out of 5 stars NOTHING NEW BUT NOT SO BAD.......2005-08-31

DEEP EVIL offers little novelty in the genetic experiment gone horribly awry genre, but it's decently made and generates a few chills. The movie opens with a doctor escaping from a mysterious lab and accused of being a terrorist. We find out that this secret lab has enforced a lockdown, snaring 14 of its staff for some unknown reasons. We find out too that the lab had cloned an alien organism which if set loose would destroy mankind as we know it. Enter the beautiful doctor, the gallant special ops force and a creepy monster that makes drops of water seem terrifying. Lorenzo Lamas, Ona Greuner, Thomas Scott, Will Sanderson and Adam Morrison do okay in the lead roles and the effects (most of the time) are above average. It has a twist ending that smells of sequelitis? Not bad for a b flick.

5 out of 5 stars If "The Thing" had a sequel...this would be it..........2005-05-04

This movie has a great plot, and pretty good acting. The movie has an extremely EXTREMELY similar plot to the first Resident Evil movie, but has somewhat of a "The Thing" blend to it.

Deep Evil is about a select handful of military ops going on a mission into an underground bio lab to retrieve any surviving members of a lockdown, within the lab. When they reach the lab though..things get dangerous. They find the entire lab covered in water and slime, which has no explination as to how it got there. They then come to find that a "secret experiment" which we later find is named "PB3" is missing from the lab.

Soonafter, the movie gets interesting when the team meets an infected civilian woman, who contracted a virus from the alien or possibly the slime/water in the lab's surroundings, the team then takes her out, after she tries to up the radiation of the lab and kill herself and everyone in the lab.

From then on, the movie only gets better and better, as members of the op. begin to become infected by this virus, and soonafter die.

Then finally the ending...i'm not about to spoil anything, but expect the unexpected. It's not the most "good triumphs over evil" ending, in the world. But it's a good one, for sure.

In the end, "Deep Evil" actually satisfied my thirst for suspense as a horror movie. And the fact that it tied in with a few other movies (Resident Evil 1, Mimic, The Thing) only made it that much more interesting. It wasn't the most original movie in the world, but it was def. worth the 1.5 hours of view to see it.

2 out of 5 stars hohum.......2005-04-17

This movie is something you may have found 10 years ago late at night on the old USA channel, or maybe even the sci-fi channel. It reminded me of the old cheesy roger corman movies. Your left with an ok (over done) plot, you have some ok actors, mixed in with some bad actors. You have some nice computer generated FX, mixed with some cheesy Halloween alien costumes. As a matter of fact I thought the aliens in the movie looked like a complete rip off of the aliens in the movie "Enemy Mine" made back in 1985. This movie was very so/so. I would pass on it. You might be able to see it for free on tv because it has a made for tv feel to it

2 out of 5 stars WOW, What a great movie??.......2005-04-13

I was'nt going to write a review but the only review here was written by a member of the Lorenzo Lamas fan club. He is'nt even the star of this film (Wow, Lorenzo's career is tanking fast)

The production values are bad.
The acting is mediocre.
BUT..the plot is OK.

Deep Evil is not a terrible film, but it is not that good either. Don't pay too much for it.

5 out of 5 stars Alien Underwater........2004-11-17

That's what I have to say about this one. It's fun to watch if only to see Roddy McDowell and Shatner's daughter in this film. It also stars the first Mr. Fantastic, Alex Hyde-White, from the Corman unreleased Fantastic Four movie. Also appearing in this quick sci fi movie is the Richard Biggs, the doctor on Babylon 5. It's fun to watch the low budget version of alien here. It even has an andriod character that's very much like Data in Next Generation. I have to say it's a keeper because it has so many familiar faces in it.

1 out of 5 stars Mentally challenged film -it's a challenge to watch it........2004-06-23

I went ahead and bought this movie because Roddy McDowall is in it, and I was curious about it being a rip-off of John Carpenter's fantastic movie The Thing. After all, the movie Leviathan was a rip-off of Carpenter's The Thing, and it's pretty decent. Man, was Unknown Origin waste-stink-awful. McDowall was ok in it for the most part, but this is like a horribly gone wrong made for the Sci-fi channel movie (in fact, it is a made for TV movie and it would not surprise me if it was done for the sci-fi channel). Some people have claimed that decent writing helped it to overcome its obvious micro budget. I don't see that at all. It's one thing to do what Leviathan did, it's a whole different thing to lift whole lines and direct concepts from Carpenter's The Thing. If these film makers were not sued, they pry should be. But even with lifted lines and concepts, it could have been watchable for some I guess. This film has more problems than that. Horribly cheesy dialog, very hokey looking sets, terrible glaring costumes, bad lighting and bad camera work made for an awful, awful movie. I'm not sure but I get the feeling that these filmmakers maybe knew better, were somewhat experienced, but needed a fast buck. This is horrible stuff. This is a mentally challenged Wing Commander-ish spoiled cheese fest.

This movie is not to be confused with 1983's Of Unknown Origin staring Peter Weller. Incidentally, Peter Weller was good in the above-mentioned Leviathan, as well as in Screamers. Check them out instead.

4 out of 5 stars great movie for a late night.......1999-11-20

what can anyone say Roddy McDowall is always great and this is no exception...the film moves fast and has some very scary and funny moments...The cast was all good and different...loved Taylor "Rodger Halston" and his cat nip or what ever, he was the babe of the movie and should have end up with the girl. Also great to see Don Stroud he's been around along time and always does a great job. A great movie for the budget and the fear factor was right there.

5 out of 5 stars Lots of fun!.......1999-02-20

Terrific, "Alien" underwater homage about creature who takes over bodies and minds of undersea mining crew. Hearkens back to the days of the best of 60's drive-in horror flicks! Lots of fun and genuinely creepy at times.

5 out of 5 stars I think I have a little heartburn I can feel it in my throat.......1999-01-22

This movie was about a crew under the ocean who come across something which turns out to be a vampire bug. This creature sucks the life out of eveyone, one at a time and has the crew guessing who it's in next. The ending is a shocker and look out eveyone above It's coming for you! Roddy McDowall was as usual a GEM! LOVE YA RODDY,Anna Marie
