Product Description

Mike Nelson, Kevin Murphy, and Bill Corbett, three of the brilliantly insane minds behind the cult classic TV show Mystery Science Theater 3000 (MST3K)finally reunite to unleash their warped sense of humor on the cinema of yesteryear as The Film Crew. Charged with the task of giving all movies their own commentary tracks, the Film Crew valiantly steps forward to tackle the best of the worst, taking on the sci-fi b-movie classic Killers From Space. When a scientist (Peter Graves) uncovers an unbelievable alien plot to conquer Earth using giant insects and reptiles, he finds himself alone in a battle to save the world. But is Earth s technology enough to defend the planet from the evil Astronians from Astrol Delta?

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Very Funny.......2007-09-13

It may not rival the classic Comedy Central-era MST3K -- what can? -- but it is easily on par with -- and is probably better than -- the later Sci-Fi versions of MST3K. As such, it is funnier than almost anything else that is currently being produced.

It is hard to fathom how any fan of MST3K could not find anything -- let alone quite a bit -- to enjoy in this. As for whether the Film Crew wastes the "potential" of this or that movie, if a reviewer feels that he or she can be more creative or comical than Messrs. Nelson, Murphy, and Corbett, please, let us see your genius. Until that time, let the rest of us peacefully enjoy the creativity and comic genius of this team.

4 out of 5 stars Good, but not the Crew's best.......2007-09-08

Overall I was was a little underwhelmed by this Film Crew release. Maybe it's because I saw their Hollywood After Dark (which is 5-Star funny, by the way) just before watching this one, but I've seen Mike, Kevin, and Bill do better. However, after giving it another try (sometimes their stuff requires repeated viewing to fully appreciate), it wasn't all that bad. Still, me giving Killers four stars is a gift to them from a devoted Mistie.

2 out of 5 stars I love mst3k but..........2007-09-05

Mst3k was a very funny show, I thought. And this... it had a few funny lines in it and the rest was just crude. I think if they cleaned up their act a little it would be a lot better.

4 out of 5 stars Fun movie to goof on.......2007-09-02

This movie is so bad it's fun to watch without the film crew commentary. The acting is terrible, the editing is horrible, and the special effects are the worst I've ever seen. Even the film crew had to wonder what the people in the 50's were thinking when they made this.

While the Film Crew is not MST3K, they do spend more time working the movie, rather than messing around with props and side stories. Which is good or bad, depending on what you liked about MST3K.

Note to Film Crew. Since this is not acually on TV, maybe you could mix in some more colorful language. It could make a gag twice as funny.

3 out of 5 stars Gosh darn't....I miss MST3K!.......2007-08-28

I've bought two so far of the Film Crew series and.. and well.. nuts. the insanity btw the stranded guy and the bots vs. the mad scientist below is truly lost. It's a more miss then hit for this. I will buy more since I'm dumb. You decide on your own if this ride suites you.

Amazon.com essential video

What's completely and utterly baffling about Killer Klowns is not the plot--that's rather tidily summed up by the title--but the fact that it got made at all. According to the filmmakers, (the Chiodo brothers: Charles, Edward, and Stephen) all it took to convince the studio was a one-page treatment and a picture of a clown holding a gun. It boggles the mind. Anyway, some killer Klowns descend from outer space and start wrapping their hapless victims in cotton candy for later consumption. Debbie and Mike suspect something's amiss, but who will believe them? The movie's greatest asset is its willingness to play on the inherent creepiness of clowns. The Klowns are grotesque parodies of their big-top cousins, hiding hideous malformed teeth behind terrifying circus makeup. It's impossible to tell if Killer Klowns is truly meant to be scary, but it is compelling in its thoroughness: popcorn, balloon animals, and really big shoes are all used to their fullest effect. The only cast member you'll recognize immediately is veteran character actor John Vernon as Officer Mooney, but keep an eye out for Christopher Titus in a small role as Bob McReed. Then just sit back and stare open-mouthed in bewildered joy. --Ali Davis

Description

Finally the truth about clowns is out! Beneath their smirky sinister grins and wildly patterned clothes are clever killers from out of this world. The "juxtaposition of their toy-store arsenal and malevolent intent proves to be a tasty combination" (Los Angeles Times) in this killer entertainment that will leave you fearing these big-top creatures for good. A spaceshiplooking like a circus tentlands in a field near a small town, signaling the attack of deviant, red-nosed, balloon-twisting psychos from another world who plan to annihilate mankindby turning people into cotton candy! Luckily, the town's teen citizenry decides to fight back and teach the cosmic bozos a lesson. But these klowns are no klutzes, turning popcorn, peanuts and caramel corn into playfulbut deadlyweapons of madcap destruction and mayhem!

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Cheesy and Campy...fun!.......2007-09-12

Yes, I should have spelled those with a K but I didn't feel like it. This film is pure 80s, clothing, hairstyles, performances, etc.; even the special effects, although that's a bonus. While some effects are highly cheesy, the Klowns are well-realized and creepy. The cast are intentionally goofy (think of films like the original "The Blob"), with the exception of the John Vernon who steals the entire film.

Interestingly enough, there were a few scenes in the film that actually gave me the creeps, unlike a lot of contemporary horror. It's bad, but in a good way.

And clowns are scary, let's face it.

5 out of 5 stars Best clown movie ever made.......2007-07-18

Creepy, scary, sharp tooth clowns killing people for food with some comedy thrown in. Killer Clowns, killer popcorn, killer shadows, awesome makeup effects and a great story. Over all and totally awesome horror experience. All I can say is go watch this film now, and bring on a sequel already!

4 out of 5 stars classic horror.......2007-05-15

This is a must have for the horror enthustist. It is a typical eighties cheesy horror flick, but a classic in my book. If you love B rated horror movies from the eighties, then you have to add this to your collection.

2 out of 5 stars I love it and i hate it.......2007-05-07

i have a love hate relationship with this movie part of me knows that this is bad but it is also good to.

5 out of 5 stars Big Top Of Death... .......2007-04-26

From the far reaches of space they came, seeking an unwary populace to devour and destroy! With their tiny car, floppy shoes, and bone-white faces, they crept into town one dark night. The KILLER KLOWNS had arrived, just in time for dinner! Yep, this amazing little low-budget movie is a must see / must own classic! Whether you love clowns or hate them, KKFOS belongs in every dvd collection! We get cotton candy cadaver coccoons, alien clown-larva popcorn pop-guns, and flesh-dissolving pies! We even get a boxing glove decapitation scene for added enjoyment! John Vernon (Animal House's Dean Wormer himself!) and Royal Dano (Messiah Of Evil) add their comedic talents to this hellish carnival of hilarity! Guaranteed 100% ridiculous and F-U-N! Buy immediately! P.S.- The "Clownzilla" sequence is my personal favorite. Very well done!...

    3 out of 5 stars endearing minor s sci-fi B movie.......2006-11-06

Peter Graves plays Dr Doug Martin ,whose plane goes missing during a nuclear test in the Nevada desert .He is at first presumed dead but eventually turns up with no memory of anything and with his chest covered in what appear to be surgical scars.
Under hypnosis it emerges that he has been kidnapped by aliens from Astro Delta who are intent upon using him as an unwitting ally in their plans to take over the world ,a scheme which also involves giant reptiles and insects .
The special effects are what mainly lets this movie down -they are truly lamentable even by the standards of low budget mid 50, science fiction ,and the bug eyed aliens are especially silly with their black costumes and patently false bug-eyes .

The idea is quite imaginative and the pace is brisk with a nice line in Cold War paranoia both with the alien invasion plot and the approval given to the role of the FBI snoopers .Poor acting is no help either .

It is watchable but scuppered by technical inadequacay

5 out of 5 stars classic science fiction.......2006-08-17

I like the old science fiction movies, they are more realistic than some alien melting from a bad acid trip in the latest sci-fi movies they have now, maybe the producers of the sci-fi movies of now were acid heads!how ever they show a great lack of imagination and fill in their movies with special effects when there isn't any acting talent in the actors ,to dazzel the uneducated audience with this garbage,is to call them stupid, and the stupid audience will eat this garbage up!eat up!stupid!

3 out of 5 stars Stupid enough to be fun.......2006-06-23

This has got to be one of the first "alien abduction" pictures. Peter Graves stars as a nuclear scientist kidnapped and brainwashed by a gang of aliens with great big googly Muppet eyes. When he regains his memory, everyone thinks he's nuts, babbling about flying saucers and giant insects. But is he? Graves and his wife sleep in seperate beds...guess the marraige isn't going so hot, huh? This is another film from the Mills Creek Sci-Fi Classics thingy, and while it isn't quite a schlock classic like Teenagers From Outer Space or Robot Monster, KFS isn't entirely terrible either. Mildly recommended for one of those nights when you have a ton of time to kill.

    3 out of 5 stars B-Science Fiction Alien Movie.......2006-02-02

This movie has all the trappings of classic B-science fiction movies. There are the cheesy aliens, the hokey, out-sized critters, awful space craft special effects, and lots of stock footage of aircraft that do not match the scenes or each other. In other words, this is great stuff. But wait, there is more! Peter Graves is the star!

Dr. Douglas Martin (Peter Graves) is monitoring test explosions of nuclear weapons from a jet. As Dr. Martin and the pilot are flying around, which is shown by an obvious model performing impossible turns, they see something unusual on the ground. Faster than you can say "I was kidnapped by aliens," their jet crashes into the ground, killing both. But wait, here comes Dr. Martin up to the main gate of the military base. We later found out that those evil aliens saved Dr. Martin so that he could help them learn when the next nuclear test is.

Everyone is suspicious of Dr. Martin because he is acting strangely. When he offers to take out the garbage his wife knows he has been brainwashed by aliens (okay, I made that up, but it could have happened!). After acting weird for a while, Dr. Martin returns to the aliens, where we learn that aliens from a planet that is dying want to move to earth, where the property values are higher, there is food for their giant critters collection, and, I almost forgot, our sun still shines.

What the aliens have been doing is stealing the power from our nuclear explosions. They have been saving it up in special nuclear power containers, which they keep powered by energy stolen from our electric grid. The aliens want the nuclear power because it will (as everyone has known forever) help their giant critter population explode, eventually eliminating every human on earth, which will then allow the aliens to move in. Of course, Dr. Martin immediately realizes that the evil aliens can be readily defeated by calmly explaining to the local authorities about the aliens and their giant critters waiting in caves in the ground, stealing the energy from our nuclear explosions, and they will insist the power grid be turned off, which will then unleash the nuclear energy, destroying the aliens. Have you ever wondered why no one listens to the one person who can save mankind in these movies?

I liked this movie. It was fun catching the mistakes in the stock footage (one kind of helicopter takes off, it becomes another kind of helicopter, and then switches back to the original - this is great stuff). It was also fun seeing the blown-up shots of horned lizards, tarantulas, and various insects, even though the gigantic invertebrates could not survive in our gravity. I guess the theory in these movies was that if you were going to stretch science, may as well totally throw science out the window. I also found it interesting that the super-sophisticated aliens needed Dr. Martin to tell them when the next nuclear explosion was going to happen. You would think these people had never heard of a circuit breaker.

Anyway, this was a fun movie with lots of veteran actors, such as Frank Gerstle, who also appeared in "The Wasp Woman," and John Frederick, who appeared in "The Alligator People." You just know that the actors in this movie are all class. If you like 1950s era B-science fiction movies, this one is, while less than great, worth a watch.

5 out of 5 stars Cheesy Sci Fi at it's best.......2002-07-23

The transfer on this DVD could be better, but for the price I couldn't complain. My favorite movie on this dvd is "Teenagers from Outer Space" The acting is horrible and the dialogue simply ridiculous. Cheesy sci fi fans will love this film for the corny special effects, the "Gargon" as they are called is a giant lobster and very poorly done, but it's a hoot, guaranteed to make you laugh.
"Phantom from Space" is actually a pretty good movie, the special effects are not bad for it's time, and the movie will hold your interest, it's an okay storyline. I really enjoyed it and if you are a die hard 50's sci fi fan this is a must have!!
"Killers from Space" has got to be among one of the lowest budget movies ever made. The space men are just great! Men dressed in a one piece hooded suit with ping pong balls cut in half for their eyes. Wow! scary! Plus you get to see them in the "special" green effect! I liked this movie because I like REALLY bad cheesy sci fi.
This dvd also includes 2 bonus features, a Popeye cartoon and a Ray Milland radio broadcast "Night Cry".

    5 out of 5 stars A Must-Have DVD From Space........2001-06-01

Phantom From Space is a decent movie for genre fans, sort of an "Invisible Man From Planet X" amalgamation, cheap but intriguing. Killers From Space is not very good at all, managing to be at once ridiculous and rather dull. Both of these are directed by W. Lee Wilder (Billy Wilder's less-successful brother).

On to Teenagers From Outer Space... Sometimes called one of the worst movies ever made, it has received that moniker unfairly. Sure, it is laughable in spots- an alien named Derek, a giant monster which is naught but a lobster shadow, truly wooden performances, and sometimes-hideous dialogue- but be honest as you watch this. You've seen much worse.

This movie is just plain entertaining. The pace is lightning-quick; that alone separates it from a myriad of similar 50's sci-fi efforts. It is better-directed than many films of its ilk, and the story has definite thought behind it, meager as its execution may be. The plot may seem redundant at times, but that was to me in keeping with the suspense of serials from the 30's and 40's. The FX are not that much worse than, say, the CGI on Babylon 5's early episodes, and the story is no more stupid than anything from the Bay/Bruckheimer team. And you know the movie means business when the first thing the aliens do upon landing is skeletonize a dog. Now that's evil!

It is a very earnest movie with a message that, while self-conscious and a tad overinflated, is unduly lampooned in these cynical times. There is camp (valiant misfires, entertaining and good-spirited) and there is dreck (exploitative crap by people who know they are making crap and wouldn't have it any other way). Give me camp any day.

Teenagers From Outer Space is not a good movie, but it is a very fun movie, one to watch again and again. I enjoyed it, and to say so does not make me feel ashamed ... much.

P.S. The transfer is pretty good; not as good as the Wade Williams collection from Image, but definitely worth the price.

3 out of 5 stars Peter Graves saves the world, and then Roger Corman destroys it.......2005-12-19

Ah, you have to love those 1950s B-movies, especially when you can get two "cult classics" like Killers From Space and The Last Woman on Earth in one neat package.

According to some, Killers From Space is so bad that it's good; some would even grant it B movie cult status. I take more of a middle ground because, to me, the movie isn't really that bad. Sure, it has some silly aspects to it, but it's a lot more enjoyable than many a 1950s science fiction thriller you can find out there in the wild. Admittedly, the prominence of Peter Graves also helps because I can't help but think of him as a legitimate actor despite a good bit of evidence to the contrary.

As for the plot, it all starts on a gorgeous day with a lot of folks coming together to watch the detonation of an atomic bomb - don't worry, they are all wearing goggles, so I'm sure they are in no danger whatsoever; as we all learned on MST3K, radiation can only hurt you if you touch it. Anyway, Dr. Douglas Martin (Peter Graves) is flying around above the explosion taking readings when his pilot spots a glowing object below and commences to take the plane into a vertical dive toward the earth. There is no sign of Martin's body in the wreckage, but no one could have survived the crash. Then, shortly thereafter, who should come wandering up to the gate of the local military base but Dr. Martin himself. He returns with no memory of what happened, but he does have a shiny new surgical scar covering the left upper side of his chest. He soon begins acting strangely, and ultimately he gets nabbed hiding some secret information about the next atomic test under a rock in the desert. In with the truth serum, and out comes a story of aliens with hard-boiled eggs for eyes breeding a zoo of genetically mutated super-sized critters. He insists that the future of the planet is in grave peril, but no one believes him. Thus, as is always the case, it's up to Peter Graves to save the world single-handedly (and, as luck would have it, the aliens were stupid enough to pretty much tell him how to destroy them).

Some individuals have posited that this film helped create a template for future alien abduction accounts. This idea is pure rubbish, in my opinion. Sure, the aliens have huge eyes that seem to haunt Martin, but no E.T. ever looked as stupid as these guys; Martin also wakes up on a table surrounded by aliens performing some kind of medical procedure on him, but the scenes in this movie are by and large pretty laughable. Besides the aliens, the other thing this movie is known for is its whole giant insect montage. When Martin tries to escape from the aliens, he winds up running around in their menagerie - in other words, he runs back and forth between some projection screens showing extreme close-ups of spiders, lizards, and other creepy-crawlies. This scene would have been fairly effective had the director shown any restraint, but these shots just continue for far too long. If you've seen Peter Graves in The Beginning of the End, you will feel quite at home here. In the final analysis, Killers From Space is obviously not a great movie, but I personally don't think it is quite bad enough to be considered a full-fledged "bad movie."

Roger Corman was the Ernie Banks of filmmaking (the difference being that Ernie Banks was actually good at what he did). Let's make two, Corman said on more than one occasion. And so it was that The Last Woman on Earth was made alongside Creature From the Haunted Sea on location in Puerto Rico. It looks and sounds like the story and dialogue were all made up on the spot - and that's pretty close to the truth. That's the only excuse Robert Towne has for giving us such a miserably boring script.

Towne not only wrote the script, he also starred in the film (under the name Edward Wain) as lawyer Martin Joyce. He's joined by Antony Carbone (who seems to be attempting to channel both Dean Martin and Bing Crosby simultaneously - with little success) and Betsy Jones-Moreland (the "last woman," as you might have guessed). Martin's a lawyer for shady businessman Harold Gern, who is "vacationing" in Puerto Rico with his wife Evelyn. The three just so happen to be scuba diving when all of the oxygen in the air mysteriously disappears, killing everyone who wasn't fortunate enough to be hooked up to an oxygen tank at the time. The oxygen soon returns as mysteriously as it vanished, and our three survivors hole themselves up in a beachside villa and basically just bicker amongst themselves for the rest of the movie. Harold is a power freak, and his constant planning drives Ev and Martin up the wall (and closer together). Martin thinks that the whole apocalypse thing makes the Gerns' marriage null and void, but Harold disagrees. The men argue about more than sharing Harold's wife, though. My favorite is the boat argument - there are hundreds of abandoned boats out at the marina, but these two chowder heads actually duke it out over sole control of Harold's boat.

The only good thing about The Last Woman on Earth is the fact that it's relatively short, clocking in at 64 minutes - that's about all a sane person can take of these three incredibly annoying characters. I've seen some bad Roger Corman films in my time, but this has to be the most boring of the bunch.

--Ali Davis

3 out of 5 stars Two W. Lee Wilder sci-fi "classics" from the early 1950s.......2005-12-19

    W. Lee Wilder had a penchant for making enjoyably average yet largely forgettable science fiction films. In Phantom From Space (1953), Wilder introduces us to a much more agreeable alien than that found in his more familiar Killers From Space of the following year. Okay, so the phantom does kill a few people and cause some serious oil fires, but it's not all his fault. He's just not a people person, you see, what with being invisible and all. He's also not that bright, choosing to ditch his spacesuit and helmet rather than fall into the clutches of the humans on his tail. He needs something akin to a methane gas atmosphere in order to breathe, and a helmet-less jaunt on earth with its oxygen-based atmosphere threatens to cut short his visit in a most significant way.

The film starts out with an unidentified object hurtling from Alaska to the California coast, where the object seems to disappear. Mobile communications folks are sent out to determine the source of interference suddenly wreaking havoc in the area, and these guys keep bumping into cops investigating murders and other acts of destruction. Soon, these different forces team up with an army man and a scientist, and everyone eventually comes to the amazing conclusion that the source of all the trouble is actually a humanoid not of this world. The ending is not exactly a bright and chipper one, but it is just about the only plausible ending possible and, in its own way, it works pretty effectively.

I actually enjoyed Phantom From Space, despite a number of slow scenes in the first half of the film. The actors are reasonably good albeit colorless, and I was amused at the way the lead scientist seemed to become more and more German as the action progressed. There are certain limited parallels between this movie and Monster a Go-Go, and I feel compelled to state that the conclusion of Phantom From Space is far, far better than what you will find in its B-movie cousin. There's nothing here to make this film stand out, but it is a relatively painless and occasionally interesting cinematic diversion.

According to some, 1954's Killers From Space is so bad that it's good; some would even grant it B movie cult status.

2 out of 5 stars A Seemingly Random Collection Of B-Movies.......2006-09-11

This is an interesting collection of sci-fi movies. Interesting, because I can detect absolutely nothing in common between most of the features, although two star John Agar. Many of these movies are available in other multi-packs or by themselves, and in some cases the other prints are much better. Most of these prints are noticeably dark, and that is especially true of "Night Fright," "Horror Express," and "Cosmos: War of the Planets."

The movies range from laughable to awful, which gives me pause trying to rationalize the eight movies I watched with the promotional copy that goes with them: "The legends of Science Fiction are gathered here for you in this definitive DVD collection of some of the greatest Sci-Fi classics to ever come out of Hollywood." Definitive? Greatest? What movies were they talking about?

I particularly liked disc two, the "Agar Fest" which has two movies starring John Agar, "Night Fright," a mundane thriller about a monster from space, and "Zontar, the Thing From Venus," a much more enjoyable (though laughable) film about, well, a monster from space. "Killers From Space" is an especially amusing piece of sci-fi horror, while "Horror Express" has real stars like Christopher Lee, and an absolutely mesmerizing performance by Telly Savalas as a Cossack Captain, who apparently just finished the William Shatner acting school curriculum. Any of the "Son of Hercules" films are tortuous, but this one at least has a man in the mangiest bear suit I have ever seen (and features a fight with a lion somewhat less realistic than Michael Palin in "Scott of the Antarctic.") The other movies fit somewhere between these highs and lows.

Overall this is not a great set: it has no discernable theme, it has exceptionally spartan packaging, and it has very dark prints in many cases. I would try to find these films in other packages. Most of the films are worthwhile for a B-movie fan (except the Hercules debacle) though, so if the price is low enough, this could fit the bill.
