Description
Hearst College, jewel of the Pacific. A citadel of higher education set amid rolling lawns and swaying palms. But since Hearst is in Neptune, California - and since Veronica Mars is among its incoming freshmen - you know it's also a noir netherworld of lies, betrayal, secrets and (of course) murder. Veronica, Logan and more of your VM favorites join cool new characters for a Season 3 of seething mystery and sardonic wit. College is indeed a learning experience as Veronica aces a crim class led by a hunky prof, solves the case of on-campus rapes that began in Season Two, and gives a grad seminar in sleuthing when two faculty members take sudden, eternal early retirements. Frosh year is gonna be freaky!

This is a show that should be still running........2007-09-16
I discovered Kristen Bell at a convention before my wife and I ever saw the series Veronica Mars. We bought the first two seasons and had to go through them non stop as they are fantastic. One of the best TV shows we have seen and we are in our seventies. The third season is on order and we will watch Heroes just because of Ms. Bell. Her film "Gracie's Choice" is also tops.
Great Show! .......2007-09-12
My husband and I thoroughly enjoy Veronica Mars from week to week. However, Season 3 was what I would call mildly disapointing. Still great to watch and get into with its whitty scripts and lovable character profiles, but too many doors were open in the last half of the season that hadn't been explored.
Even through the disapointing ending of our favorite show, we are still big fans and will undoubtedly purchase the 3rd season on DVD to complete our collection.
WHAT HAPPENED?????.......2007-08-28
Based on a lot of the reviews that are already posted here, I don't think there are a whole lot of people calling it like it is. So, I will take it upon myself to be the voice of truth about VERONICA MARS season 3. There are 5 star people raving about it because they love the show and are unwilling to accept the truth and there are 1 star people who aren't giving the 3rd season a fair assesment.
There is not a single show on TV, not a single one, that my wife and I don't flock to week to week, other than VERONICA MARS and the 3rd season was no exception. As the 3rd season played out, we found ourselves completely involved as we had been the previous 2 season, all the way up to the midseason cliff hanger. A serial rapist. A murder on campus. All the suspense and mystery was in tact and juicy as ever.
Then, when the show started back up, all the things that we had gotten involved in were solved in the first handful of episodes. The following episodes were, for lack of better words, UNEVENTFUL. All the way up to the odd and uncomfortable season finale that ended with the yawning cast of a vote.
Even my wife was shocked at the abrupt and uneventful ending. What did they do? What happened? Did the writers lose interest? Did the network pull the plug on the show before they wrote the final episodes? This is what I think. Personally, I believe the only thing that explains the weak ending of the 3rd season would be that the writers and producers knew that the CW had given up on them. So, they in turn, gave up on the CW.
All speculation aside, VERONICA MARS fell off the table halfway through the 3rd season. The charm and personality of the characters and actors involved was still intact, but the stories being told were in par with a fledgling show instead of a show that has given us some of the best television moments around over it's 2 1/2 prior seasons.
The CW just needs to face the facts. The ratings that they're suffering aren't because of quality of show, but because of lack of STATIONS and lack of bribing the NIELSON and ARBITRON companies... like the big boys do... cause we're watching... and unfortunately, we're not watching VERONICA MARS anymore.
Third season not a charm.......2007-08-26
While the first season of Veronica Mars will go always be one of my favorite seasons of any show, the latter years just cannot compete. I found the second season too convoluted, and I thought Veronica's likeability was starting to fade. The third season, however, is much too simplified. And the worst offense? Veronica Mars, the title character, becomes a complete Mary-Sue. Her sleuthing skills are nowhere near the vicinity of season one, yet everyone falls in love with her and superior "gift." Her college professor wants to vouche for her for an FBI internship, and the college dean writes a glowing letter of recommendation. She's able to stay on top of her college grades while working cases and cooking dinner for her father, and she requires no time or adjustment to do so. And not only does she have Logan Echolls madly in love with her and willing to do anything to protect her, but now we have the annoying character of Piz (Wallace's college roomie) following after her.
Veronica has always been an attractive and smart character, but these things continue to happen despite her coldness, her smugness, her arrogance. You wait and wait, expecting her to be set up for a fall so she can see the error of her ways, but it never happens. It's obvious that the creator of the show is head-over-heels for his character, and it feels like he's lost the necessary objectiveness. Veronica is right, you're wrong. Even if you're a member of the audience.
This would be more bearable if there wasn't SO MUCH Veronica this year. The first two seasons did a much better job of balancing screentime, so even though it's a show with a title character, it felt like an ensemble cast. But this year, the amazing talent from the rest of the actors was wasted. Logan had no real storyline outside of Veronica, Wallace all but disappears for episodes at a time, and Weevil is hardly ever on-screen. The utter waste of Jason Dohring (Logan) hurts the most, as Logan is transformed into the "boyfriend" character, and his sickle wit dies with his screentime. In the end, it's just too much Veronica and not enough everyone else, coupled with a dumb-downed version of a once very smart show.
veronica you will be missed.......2007-08-05
i loved this show it was one of my favorites from the 2006-2007 season. season three i have to say is the best season of this show(thats not to say there not all good this one is just better) again i loved this. i will miss watching some of my favorite characters every week(logan, mac an wallace i will miss you all almost as much as veronica) never have i been so sad to see a show go as i was to see buffy the vampire slayer(favorite show ever) and this is a credit to the writes and actors of this show. so just to leave off if youve never watched this show buy the first season you wont be diisapointed and lastly dont buy into the taglines on the back of the dvds "a little bit buffy,a little bit bogart and a dash of nancy drew" veronica is more than that shes her own character and its amazing. see ya v!

From the moment that Prince Eric's ship emerged from the fog in the opening credits it was apparent that Disney had somehow, suddenly recaptured that "magic" that had been dormant for thirty years. In the tale of a headstrong young mermaid who yearns to "spend a day, warm on the sand," Ariel trades her voice to Ursula, the Sea Witch (classically voiced by Pat Carroll), for a pair of legs. Ariel can only succeed if she receives true love's kiss in a few day's time and she needs all the help she can from a singing crab named Sebastian, a loudmouth seagull, and a flounder. The lyrics and music by Howard Ashman and Alan Menken are top form: witty and relevant, and they advance the story (go on, hum a few bars of "Under the Sea"). Mermaid put animation back on the studio's "to do" list and was responsible for ushering Beauty and the Beast to theaters. A modern Disney classic. --Keith Simanton

Terrible movie - don't waste your money or your time.......2007-09-03
Our family enjoys many Disney movies (Mulan, Peter Pan, Fox & the Hound, Robin Hood, Sword in the Stone, etc.), but Little Mermaid is terrible! I can't believe this plot was developed anytime after 1950. 16-year-old mermaid "falls in love" with prince after seeing him once (never actually speaks with him), gives up everything (family/talent/etc.) to see him again. If you are looking for a strong female role model, watch Mulan - it is amazing. If you are looking for a girl-gets-prince movie, watch Cinderella - it is a classic.
The Little Mermaid.......2007-08-24
Disney never seems to let us down with the classics. Great movie and songs.
How can anyone not like this?.......2007-08-23
This is an all-time classic. I dont know anybody who hasnt seen it. Its a magical, beautiful film that you can watch over and over. And who doesnt know the words to every song? It doesn't get any better than this.
The Little Mermaid.......2007-08-21
Like all the other "Disney Princess" movies, The Little Mermaid is great. The DVD came with all kinds of cool bonus features. Some people have said that the restoration was good, and if that is your case: get a new tv, i had no problems with it whatsoever, the work they did was incredible.
Cheated. I Got The Region 3 DVD. Only 1 Disc. "Jumping Jellyfish.".......2007-08-18
Walt Disney's classic under-the-sea coming-of-age film "The Little Mermaid" (loosely based on the fairy tale by Hans Christian Andersen) gets the 2-Disc Special Platinum Edition DVD treatment.
When I ordered this movie, I specifically ordered the 2-Disc edition, but I recieved the wrong one. I got stuck with the Region 3 DVD, which has only 1 disc and only several special features. As Sebastian would say,
"Jumping jellyfish." I was very disappointed.
On to the movie itself, however. The film is a classic, with songs by the Academy-Award winning team Alan Menken and Howard Ashman (who would go on to score "Beauty And The Beast," my all-time favourite movie) and wonderful characters (Ariel, Flounder, Sebastian and Scuttle, among others), the movie is a timeless classic your little girl will treasure forever. Rated G.

The neatest sci-fi of the 60s.......2007-09-16
I first saw this movie in a theatre as part of double sci-fi (the other movie was the time portal which has been renamed the time travelers) and it caught my attention and it has never left. One of the best sci-fi's ever.
Deaf and hard of hearing people once again frozen out of classic cinema.......2007-09-12
What, no closed captions or English subtitles? For forty bucks, you'd think Paramount/Criterion could afford to make this accessible to the millions of us with hearing impairment.
I saw this film in the theater upon its original release, but it pretty much went by me because of my deafness. I had looked forward to seeing it again, but I'm disappointed to find that even 43 years later, I'm still not going to be able to understand the dialogue (or monologue).
I'd like to give it 4-5 stars based on others' reviews, but as long as Paramount doesn't give a damn about people like me, it's going to have to get a low rating.
courage in hopeless circumstances.......2007-08-23
An astronaut searches for food and water after an orbital mission to Mars crashes on the surface of the planet. Obviously low budget 60s sci-fi rises above the B-grade norm with sympathetic main performance, good pace and signs of intellect in plot.
Science in science fiction.......2007-08-12
Robinson Crusoe put the science in science fiction. There are no "noisey" ships or explosions in a vacuum. Our hero uses telecourses and video before compact portable video cameras were invented. He uses true American ingenuity to design a clock, find oxygen, and remain safe until he is taken back home. This film is truly different than science fantasies like E.T. or Star Wars. The score is magnificent and thrilling. And, best of all, it shows what all kids in the sixties knew--the conquest of space could easily be done with World War II surplus equipment.
Wonderful film for all ages.......2007-08-10
Count me in with the rest of the gang waiting rabidly for this release. I saw this film several times as a child and was totally engrossed in the idea of a trip to Mars and the adventure it could bring. That adventure is grandly represented by this wonderful film, which allowing for a few flaws in the plot, does at least attempt to present the story with some scientific merit and plausible ideas.
The cinematography is excellent! The stark, desolate landscape is both thrilling and chilling in it's magnificent but achingly isolated beauty. The lead actor, Paul Mantee, does a fine job of conveying the loneliness and edge of insanity mindset that comes from being in a situation of despair and solitude.
And best of all, you can watch this one with your kids, grandkids, spouse or preacher, for that matter. Good clean wholesome fun for all ages.
Highly recommended!

The second season of Veronica Mars showcases the series' crackling-sharp writing and topnotch acting of star Kristen Bell and the rest of the cast. Veronica still struggles with the class wars in sunny Neptune, Calif., trying to find a balance between high school, love, helping her dad as a private eye, and doing the right thing. The ongoing thread of season 2 is the aftermath of a horrifying tragedy, and as Veronica and dad Keith try to find out what caused it, mysteries only compound. Shifty Sheriff Lamb, town powerbrokers, and various high-school cliques seem to undermine Veronica at every turn. Thankfully, Veronica has more chutzpah than Phillip Marlowe, and the side-of-the-mouth one-liners to match: "Well, actually," Veronica says dryly to a bad guy, "despite popular opinion, you really can't beat the truth out of someone." Some of the show's broad strokes echo the stellar Buffy the Vampire Slayer, yet Bell's Veronica doesn't need the supernatural to tackle a challenge. She's a real girl, conflicted, prickly, lovesick, yearning, sometimes even scared. As Veronica tries to solve the mystery, she must also handle her own heartbreaks, and the moral stumbles of those closest to her. Happily, she's got a great best pal, Wallace (the effervescent Percy Daggs III), and possibly the coolest, most understanding TV dad ever (Enrico Colantoni). The boxed set includes 22 episodes (many with deleted scenes), a behind-the-scenes mini-doc, a cute gag reel, and a short profile film, Veronica Mars: Not Your Average Teen Detective. You can say that again. --A.T. Hurley

Meanwhile, after a summer of surprises and sordid murder trials, Logan and best friend Duncan Kane find themselves at odds, while Veronica must deal with her increasingly complicated romantic life and a whole new school year with familiar and surprising fresh faces.
Customer Reviews:
Dad, your hooker's here..........2007-09-12
Everyone's favorite high school detective is back at it, and maybe getting deeper than she should.
There were a lot of questions for Veronica Mars heading into the second season. Will it be able to match the genius of the first season? How can the new 'big mystery' even compare to the one we saw in the first season? Among others. However, there were a lot of questions left hanging once last season ended so if you took the time to watch it there's no way you're not going to watch the second season if you're seeking answers.
What are the big mysteries this season? Here's only a sneak-peak:
A bus crash.
A murder.
An unfolding drug ring.
After a bit of a shaky first episode (there was A LOT of explaining to do which results in A LOT of flashbacks), everything else flows just as easily and perfectly as it did before. Veronica is still that sassy teen detective we all love. Wallace, thankfully, gets a much better and more detailed background. Keith continues his wonderful father role and digs his teeth into a couple juicy cases. Logan is still that 'love him or hate him' kind of guy, but we can start to understand why he is the way he is. Then there's Duncan. I'm still not big on him but he seems considerably less wooden this time around.
Whether it's the mysteries that keep you coming back or it's the humor, just know that both those ingredients--and the seldom talked about intense emotional moments--are there in full force. Season two of Veronica Mars only solidifies why we love the show. Word of advice, prepare to be blown away by the season finale.
Oh, and is it just me or is it completely hilarious how much Veronica wants a pony?
Veronica Mars Season 2.......2007-08-29
Oh why, oh why, did the networks not continue this brilliantly written and acted show after Season 3? This show is a must for any teacher, middle and highschool student. It is fun, extremely witty, sad, poignant, classy, exciting, thought provoking and gutsy. This series will always be a favourite of mine. I have to say my 10 year son loves this show, not sure if the attraction is Kristen Bell or the show itself!
Highly recommended. If you have never seen it give it a go even though it only runs for three seasons, it is worth every minute.
I miss it already.......2007-08-06
If season two of "Veronica Mars" doesn't quite live up to season one, it realy doesn't matter - it's still spectacular television. The mystery of season two manages to hit close to home for everyone, and the suspects are rampant throughout, leaving you guessing right up to the finale. My biggest complaint is that Wallace seems to get lost in the mix of the expanded cast (this was a much bigger problem in season 3). Kristen Bell puts in another superb performance, giving us glimpses of the sometimes sad, always guarded, but inherently sweet soul that lies beneath Veronica's brash, snarky and wip-smart exterior. If Jason Dohring's Logan isn't quite as much fun as season one, he at least seems to grow up. Best of all is Enrico Colantoni's Keith, who took over the role of best TV dad from "The OC"'s Sandy Cohen during season one and keeps going strong in season two, loving his daughter unconditionally yet constantly fearing that she might not turn out alright, that the dark goings on in Neptune might damage her for good.
Better Even Than Season One.......2007-07-28
It is so difficult to find good stuff on tv these days! Thankfully, the second season of Veronica Mars does not disappoint. Every episode is engaging, and picks up where season one left off without missing a beat. The ending is shocking, to say the least, and well thought out. Viewers may need to watch more than once to pick up all of the extra details they may have missed first go round, but that is no chore, as this is one of the best shows to appear on tv in years.
Veronica Mars Rocks!.......2007-07-07
I never watched this when it was actually on tv, but I saw parts of season 3 and just had to see season 1+2 so I bought both and loved both! The show is funny and suspenseful and just all around great! It became my fav show...too bad it isn't coming back for a 4th season...I wish it was!

The smartest high school drama since Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Veronica Mars is The O.C. as penned by Raymond Chandler. Veronica (Kristen Bell, Deadwood) is Nancy Drew by way of Lauren Bacall, while Neptune makes Peyton Place look like Mayberry. The first season begins in the aftermath of a dizzying array of cataclysmic events: Her best friend, Lilly (Amanda Seyfried), was murdered, her sheriff father was fired over his handling of the case, she was sexually assaulted, and her mother left. Since then, Keith Mars (Enrico Colantoni, Just Shoot Me) has become a private eye and drafted Veronica as his assistant. She may lack Buffy's physical prowess, but the "tiny blonde one" turns out to have a special talent for sleuthing. In the wake of her sophomore year, the popular crowd abandoned Veronica--even boyfriend Duncan (Teddy Dunn), Lilly's brother. (Hence the theme song: "We Used to Be Friends.") Veronica is on her own until she meets Wallace (Percy Daggs III), the only student unfamiliar with her past, unlike Duncan's sarcastic pal, Logan (Jason Dohring), one of her more ardent foes. He was Lilly's boyfriend and his father is movie star Aaron Echolls (Harry Hamlin). By the end of her junior year, Veronica and Logan will make their peace, but it won't be so easy to win over the school--let alone the town. Throughout the season, Veronica will solve several mysteries both big and small--including the murder of Lilly Kane. But a few questions remain. For instance, at the end of the season finale, Veronica opens the door to greet an unseen visitor with "I was hoping it would be you." So who was it? Fortunately, UPN renewed the critically acclaimed (if ratings challenged) teen noir and that tantalizing question will be answered in the second season premiere. --Kathleen C. Fennessy

As excellent as the second season which I reviewed first by accident........2007-09-16
I won't repeat what I wrote about the second season. I reviewed that as the first seson by mistake. I'll just say that Veronica Mars is a top show that should still be on TV. There is a movement to bring it back or to have a Veronica Mars films. My wife and I are 100% for that.
Awesome!!.......2007-09-05
Veronica Mars is one of the best shows ever made if you like out of the ordinary and/or mystery shows and season 1 is the very best. I recommend it to any who has the ability to think or to laugh. It is not your usual tv drama and is very original and witty.
The Best Season of a Great Show.......2007-08-28
Veronica Mars ended before it's time. Killed off by poor ratings and a Pussycat Dolls reality show, VM was one of the smartest and best shows on television during it's three year run. Like most great shows with a short run, VM will likely only gain in stature as people begin to realize what they were missing. Complex shows like this are best viewed in DVD format anyway, and it's must that you start at the beginning.
VM starts off in the aftermath of three life changing events for it's title character, played to perfection by Kristen Bell. Her best friend Lilly Kane was murdered, she was raped at a party, and her mother took off when her father investigated the popular, rich, and influential Kane family. Keith lost his job as sheriff, and Veronica loses her boyfriend Duncan Kane and all her friends. She enters her third year of high school as an outcast, working for her PI dad and taking cases from students for extra cash on the side.
There are three reasons why this DVD collection is a must own.
1. The storyline. VM is structured a lot like Buffy, with a mystery of the week and one over reaching storyline. The mystery of the week stories are generally well done, with a couple that are kind of unbelievable and convoluted. But the the major mystery of Lilly Kane's death makes this show a compulsive watch. There are plenty of details and twists that keep your attention and add suspense.
2. The writing. VM is one of wittiest and funny shows i've seen in a while. Veronica has a sharp tongue and all of her friends are also deadly clever, Logan Ecchols in particular. You'll be quoting lines for a while.
3. The performances. Kristen Bell is spot on as Veronica. Her character is very nuanced. She manages to be tough, indepedent, loving, and fragile all at the same time. It's no wonder why she's such a hot commodity now. Enrico Colantoni is great as Keith Mars, Veronica's father, and former sheriff turned PI. The loving relationship between Veronica and Keith is one of the best parts of the show. One of the most surprising characters is Logan, a son of a famous movie star who seems to be nothing but a anti-social jerk, but turns out to a much more complex and emotional character than he appears. That's not even mentioning Percy Daggs and Francis Capra, both are great as Wallace and Weevil respectively.
But that being said, VM is not perfect. There are plenty of moments that seem downright convienent and unbelievable. The first thing that springs to mind is Wallace working in the attendance office. Thank goodness for that, because without Wallace Veronica would not have access to countless permanent records. I'm surprised she never got caught with one because she basically reads them out in the open. Second is the flashback scenes. During the flashback scenes Veronica dresses like a librarian, has long hair, and is basically a typical teenage girl. But in a year she turns from ditzy blonde in to a female Phillip Marlowe. It's a little unbelievable.
But honestly, those complaints really don't matter because the good points far outweigh the bad. If your a fan of Buffy, or just good TV, pick this DVD set up. It's addicting. The next thing you know you'll have watched all of these episodes and you'll be fiending for season two.
A GIFT FROM HEAVEN.......2007-08-28
...And on the Eighth Day, God created Mars. Veronica Mars. VM is OBMF, she is 5 feet tall, spry, and ready to go. Supporting cast is great too. Indeed this creation was far too precious for television, like a great supernovae, its existence was brief but exceptionally brilliant, apparently far too brilliant for the TV masses who prefer a steady diet of geriatric dancing quasi celebrities and searching for new Pussycat Dolls. The CW will never live down the cancellation of this fine program. Do yourself a favor and watch.
AWESOME great start of the season!.......2007-08-26
The season starts off with Veronica Mars' best friend Lily Kane is murdered. Veronica decides to become a dective to find out who did it.
I love Veronica's personality because she doesn't care what other people think of her and shes not afraid to speak her mind. She always has to crack a joke about everything.
I gave it 5 stars because it's a funny, interesting, laugh out loud tv series. It will make you want to watch show after show to disc after disc.

Product Description
Packed with epic action, OPEN RANGE is a powerfully gripping story that's never been told until now, and stars Academy Award(R) winners Robert Duvall (1983 Best Actor, TENDER MERCIES) and Kevin Costner (1991 Best Director, DANCES WITH WOLVES), and Academy Award(R) nominee Annette Bening (1999 Best Actress, AMERICAN BEAUTY). A group of free grazers, four men trying to escape their past, are driving cattle and living off the land on the open range -- a place where nature makes the only laws. When a ruthless, evil rancher tries to run them out of town, the men's peaceful existence takes a tumultuous turn and ends in the grittiest, most explosive gunfight on film as two men battle a town for honor, justice, and a way of life that's quickly disappearing.

Released almost exactly 11 years after Clint Eastwood's Unforgiven, Kevin Costner's Open Range proved yet again that the Western is the classic American genre. While it lacks the thematic impact of Eastwood's masterpiece, Costner's first film since 1997's ill-fated The Postman returns the actor/director of Dances With Wolves to the open prairies of America--in this case the free-range frontier of 1882--where legal "free-grazing" cattle drives were falling prey to empire-building land-owners. In the wake of territorial murder, free-grazing cowboys Boss (Robert Duvall) and Charley (Costner) seek vengeful justice against the ruthless rancher (Michael Gambon) who threatens their law-abiding survival. A feisty ally (the late Michael Jeter, in his next-to-final film role) and a doctor's sister (Annette Bening) offer support during climactic shootouts, masterfully staged with the shock and suddenness of real-life gunfire. Rich in character development and thick-hided humor, this handsome production redeemed Costner's directorial career with a well-told story (by Craig Storper, based on Lauran Paine's novel The Open Range Men), flawless performances, and stunning Canadian locations. --Jeff Shannon

good western.......2007-08-28
good story with a great gun battle at the end.
Duval was up to his usual greatness
Great Western.......2007-08-25
Western movies have not been too popular in recent years, but it's good to see that some westerns are still being made for mature audiences. This is one of them. Some of the individual elements of the movie seem to be taken from other stories, but they are recombined to make an exciting new tale of the old west.
A beautiful and classic Western........2007-08-20
Rules of thumb are dangerous when it comes to movies, but the following one has never, to my knowledge, been disproven: Any movie that features Robert Duvall in a cowboy hat is likely to be a classic. That rule was certainly true of "Tender Mercies" and "Lonesome Dove," and in my opinion it's also true of "Open Range," the 2003 film that proved "Dances With Wolves" wasn't just a fluke for Kevin Costner. Costner directed this moving, atmospheric Western in which he co-stars with Duvall and Annette Bening. (Touchingly and appropriately, Costner gave Duvall top billing in this film.) In "Open Range," Duvall and Costner play Boss Spearman and Charlie Waite, two saddle tramps leading a herd of cattle to market with the help of Mose (Abraham Benrubi), a hulking giant of a man, and Button (Diego Luna), a semi-feral Mexican teenager. Unfortunately, the four inadvertently run afoul of evil rancher Denton Baxter (Michael Gambon) and corrupt Sheriff Poole (James Russo), both of whom consider it their duty on earth to kill all cowboys who follow the open range. But for Charlie this misfortune has a silver lining, because it brings him into contact with the beautiful Sue (Bening). Essentially the film is a three-character chamber drama between Duvall, Costner and Bening, though it contains enough excitement and color for three Westerns. All three give performances equal to the best they've ever given. The relationship between Charlie--a former soldier and gunslinger who strives to bury his more murderous instincts--and Boss, who generally advises caution but can turn dangerous when he has to, is as rich and enjoyable as that between Gus McCrae and Woodrow Call in "Lonesome Dove." Duvall's Boss can't help but put us in mind of Gus, except that Boss is more likely than Gus to think before he acts, to his ultimate benefit. The slow, halting courtship between Charlie and Sue is deeply moving; Charlie loves Sue more than any woman he's ever met, but feels unworthy of her kindness and gentility. These relationships play out against a backdrop of the murderous doings of Baxter and Poole, culminating in a long gunfight that, in its sense of chaotic danger, feels closer to the truth than any gunfight Randolph Scott ever appeared in. Sweet-souled yet breathtakingly exciting, with magnificent photography by James Muro and haunting music by Michael Kamen, "Open Range" is a true classic Western.
Just an excellent film.......2007-08-10
I love westerns, but even if you don't, this storyline translates well on its own. The film is well acted (both Costner and Duvall are excellent) with great cinematography. It is the kind of film that makes you yearn for the old days when people lived by the strength of their word and trust (perhaps just a Hollywood created notion, but I still like to think that we all try to strive for such a thing).
Many people buy this and Broken Trail, but by far this is the better one. Of course Broken Trail was a made for TV movie and as such was shot like it was a made for TV movie. The one saving grace of that movie was Duvall and Church (I have liked him since he first appeared in Wings, I think it is his voice and unusual speech pattern that is interesting to me).
Too long, but ultimately worthwhile..........2007-07-28
"Open Range" could have benefitted by one more film editing task, cutting it by perhaps 20 minutes. If you have the patience, however, the final rewards are many. The performances are uniformly good, with Costner, Duvall and Bening excellent as usual, and many fine supporting actor contributions, including Michael Gambon as the bad guy (Dumbledore in the Harry Potter series!)and Michael Jeter as a helpful townsman. It is fascinating to compare Costner's grizzled, disillusioned Civil War veteran here to the sparkling gunfighter he portrayed as a young man in "Silverado." The cinematography is glorious in this one, but the script wasn't quite tight enough to make this a masterpiece. The climax, however, is one of the best wild West gunfights I've ever seen, and at age 62, I've seen scores of them on screen. Give this movie's first 40 minutes the benefit of the doubt, and the final 100 minutes will reward you. As a bonus, Duvall rips off half-a-dozen hilarious lines, and a dozen wise ones, winning your heart and mind as an old cowhand who has learned life's lessons well.

Hey Abbott!.......2007-09-02
Abbott and Costello are the best comedy duo, ever. This collection has some of their funnier movies as well as some of their "quieter" ones. Family fun for everyone. It's pure comedy and has non of that "blue" that's so popular with people today. If you want "funny", this is it! Enjoy!
Great Movies!!!.......2007-08-23
Great movies that my kids love. I had forgotten how funny Abbot & Costello are. Highly recommended.
Classic.......2007-08-11
Two DVD's, 8 films. Picture and film quality is as good as technology can make something this old. The balance between the films is uneven, but I guess every movie can't be a gem. A little pricey for what you get, actually. I remember watching these movies as a kid and being absolutely thrilled with them. Abbott and Costello Meet Frankenstein and Abbott and Costello Meet the Killer will have you laughing in the aisles. The other movies have their moments, but don't expect more than an occasional chuckle.
Great classic comedy!.......2007-06-27
I used to watch these guys every Sunday morning when I was a kid. When I seen they finally came onto DVD and especially 8 episodes per volume, you just can't go wrong for the price. In my opinion, they were the best comedy duo there ever was. Some of their best movies exist within this volume including my favorite, Abbott & Costello meet Frankenstein. I ordered via standard shipping and received them within a weeks time, packaged nicely, and in great condition. If you love classic, clean comedy, then this is for you.

Ariel and her husband, Prince Eric, have a little problem with their daughter, Melody, in the sequel to Disney's landmark The Little Mermaid. Melody is threatened by Morgana, the evil sister of the sea witch Ursula (both voiced by Pat Carroll). Before you can say "Briar Rose," Melody's parents decide to keep their daughter's roots a secret, forbidding her to learn about the ocean while Morgana is around. Now the budding teenager secretly frolics in the sea with Ariel's old friends, Sebastian and Scuttle. When she learns the truth from Morgana, Melody becomes an unknowing pawn in her scheme--and Mom has to take to the sea again to help.
As with Disney's other made-for-video sequels, The Little Mermaid II looks and sounds wonderful (and reunites much of the same vocal talent). Four- to nine-year-olds who grew up with the original will certainly enjoy seeing the friends again. A new set of artists has come up with four catchy tunes and some fun new characters, including Tip and Dash, a pensive penguin and his blubbery walrus friend. Yet, where Beauty and the Beast had a deliberate Christmas-themed sequel, and Pocahontas told the tale of her historical trip to England, the plot here is very forced. It is pretty much a rehash of the first film with different characters. Tip and Dash are a reincarnation of Timon and Pumbaa, and Morgana is exactly like her sister, except thinner. Besides the stellar music, this unneeded sequel also misses another important aspect of the original--heart. --Doug Thomas

It's Probably What you Expect -- An In-Depth Review (SPOILER).......2007-03-07
"The Little Mermaid II: Return to the Sea". Well, just by looking at that title, it's not exactly difficult to tell what sort of sequel it will be. Not just, "The Little Mermaid II", but they added a little hint for you: RETURN TO -- as in, a rerun of -- THE SEA.
Therefore, it's what you would expect from Disney. First off -- technicalities. They've taken some shortcuts and used CAPS animation, so it lacks that old-fashioned Disney look from the original Little Mermaid and the "classics". It doesn't look too bad or too cheesy, though. The colors are only a tiny bit more neon than before, and it's only a bit overly-smoothed. It's not as bad as many would make it seem.
The voices are, with the exception of Eric, kept, and they sound great. My only pet peeve is Melody's voice. Technically, I am YOUNGER than the character, and much younger than her voice actress Tara Strong, but I solemnly promise that I do not sound that much like a hyperactive six-year-old. But, really, what can you expect from the voice of Bubbles from the Powerpuff Girls?
The story, if you haven't gathered it yet, is simple: Ariel is grown up. Eric is grown up. They've had a baby girl named Melody, who inherits her mother's contempt of boundaries. Apparently, Ursula the Sea Witch has a younger sister named Morgana, who conveniently shows up at Melody's christening (Sleeping Beauty, anyone?). She attempts to ransom Melody for King Triton's trident, fails, and is (sort of) banished from the kingdom. Ariel decides it's too dangerous for Melody to know anything about the world of merpeople -- including King Triton, Melody's grandfather -- and hides it from her daughter.
It might be nice to mention here that only King Triton or his ancestors/descendents can remove the triton from its holster-like thingie, which is where it is stored when not in his hands.
Melody, however, longs to go in the sea or even be a mermaid (though is not sure they even exist.) When she finds a mysterious golden seashell "locket" -- which, in perfect Disney fashion, is roughly four or five times the size of a normal locket, to get the point across to the younger audiences -- she has an angsty teenage fit at her mother, Ariel, and makes up her mind to run away. Or, technically, rows away in an absolutely tiny rowboat.
Morgana seizes the chance to use a descendent of King Triton, lures Melody into her trust by using Ursula's bottled magic (?) to transform her into a mermaid, and weepily convinces Melody to "recover [her] lost trident". Melody, not knowing any better and only wanting to "belong" as a mermaid, captures the trident with the help of a talkative penguin, "Tip", and a blubbery walrus, "Dash".
Of course, Ariel and Eric are frantic during all of this, searching here on the land AND sea (coincidentally the name of the finale song), which, in effect, causes Ariel to be turned into a mermaid for the purpose of searching underwater for her daughter. If you think about it, Ariel is acting as a sort of tour guide through the original film: her grotto and "Under the Sea" rock are featured during a little musical "duet" she sings with Melody.
Naturally, Ariel and her re-united pal Flounder arrive at Morgana's lair -- strangely made of ice and above water, as opposed to Ursula's bony underwater lair -- at the exact moment that Melody arrives with the trident. Mother and daughter go through the traditional you're-a-mermaid-deal before Morgana reminds Melody that she is still waiting for her trident. Ariel rebukes this and begs Melody to not give the trident to Morgana. Melody, with a new bargaining chip, rubs it in her mother's face that she never told her about merpeople and -- with a dramatic "too late, Mom!" -- hands over the trident.
The obvious happens: Morgana gains command over all the seas, Melody is locked away with Flounder in a quickly-made ocean prison cell to await the loss of her fins and underwater breathing, King Triton's sea-army and Eric's land-army come to defeat Morgana and fail, and ultimately, Melody escapes with the help of Tip, Dash, and Flounder to reclaim the trident and give it to her newly-reintroduced grandfather, Triton.
It could've stopped there, but didn't. After the climatic battle, the first thing King Triton says to his granddaughter is that he'll give her a choice -- come to Atlantica and live as a mermaid with him, or stay with her mother and father on the land. She invents a new option: break down the (literal) wall between merpeople and human people once and for all. Voila! The End! Complete with an exeptionally good-looking teenage mer-boy and a trident-created rainbow!
Though it took a few cues from it's prequel, it was a pretty entertaining story, once you've sprinkled in a few songs:
"Down to the Sea" -- opening scene, Jodi Benson, mostly. Sweet and catchy. Almost as good as one of the originals.
"For a Moment" -- Tara Strong and Jodi Benson. Beautiful song, period.
"Tip and Dash" -- Tara Strong, Max Casella, and Stephen Furst. I'm sorry to say that this song simply ANNOYED me. It does succeed in getting stuck in your head, however, which may be the point.
"Here on the Land and Sea" -- finale, chorus. This is also a catchy song, though not especially moving. A good, solid, happy-ending song.
Characters...what can I say? Ariel has lost her characterizing feistyness, but, unless you refuse to accept a "new" Ariel, it probably won't bother you. She's more motherly than I thought the teenage Ariel could be, but that makes sense, as she is...oh, thirty- or forty-something now. Eric, I'm sorry to say, was a bit wimpy until he brought out his army. And he was my favorite Disney Prince. Tip and Dash, well, I never felt sorry for them or cheered them on. I didn't really dislike Melody until she started using too much out-of-date slang ("Hey, fellas! What's kickin'?") and was selfish and didn't think about consequences. Sebastian...good ol' Sebastian. He stayed just the same. Same with Scuttle. Flounder, on the other hand, has turned into a beady-eyed, deep-voiced obese yellow-and-blue father fish. Morgana was actually very hateable, and I loved her sharp-witted anchovy of a shark, Undertoe. Her pet stingrays, supposedly a replacement for Flotsam and Jetsam, didn't impress me nor scare me. What was really scary about them? They just laughed in this hissy way reminiscint of a toddler or a bat.
Overall, however cynical I may have been, it is a good -- not excellent, but very good -- sequel to the original. It's less epic than the first, certainly, but as the original was based on a long-known fairytale and Return to the Sea was based on the Disney adaption of the long-known fairytale, it's hard to compare them. Kids won't really care about the little characterization flaws or annoying dialogue, and it is, after all, marketed toward kids.
Excellent movie. .......2007-02-18
This is a good movie. Unlike Ariel Ariel's thirteen year old Melody dreams of being a mermaid like Ariel, dreamed of being human. But in the upcoming Ariel movie,The Little Mermaid 3 ARIEL'S MELODY Ariel is pregnant with Melody at the begining of the movie. How come Melody is thirteen in here? I like this movie and I like the fact that it doesn't have Melody in her late-teens like Ariel was. Melody goes to Morganna{Ursala's sister} with her need{want} like Ariel goes to Ursala. The two movies are a little simualar and both very good. The little Mermaid 2 has quite a few songs in it here are all the ones I can remember: DOWN TO THE SEA, FOR A MOMENT, DIP AND DASH and HERE ON THE LAND AND SEA. ENJOY THIS MOVIE.
P.S THE LITTLE MERMAID 3 IS COMING OUT IN NOVEMBER!
P.P.S I HOPE YOU LIKE THIS MOVIE!
P.P.S.S . I think this is just as good as the first little mermaid one. Hope you do to!

Director Peter Bogdanovich (The Last Picture Show) tipped his hat to the classic screwball comedies of the 1930s, and especially the most glorious of them all, Howard Hawks' Bringing Up Baby. Barbra Streisand plays a charming flake who distracts a self-absorbed musicologist (Ryan O'Neal). He's engaged to be married, but soon Streisand's character has him chasing after stolen jewelry and getting into one madcap fix after another. Bogdanovich, who is also a film critic, understands the engine of the screwball genre, and his loving revival of the form brings a smile, though it is not quite consistently inspired or funny. There are plenty of great moments, however, including a slap at O'Neal's own star-making vehicle, Love Story. --Tom Keogh
Description
Too many kooks spoil the comedy soup? Not when BARBRA STREISAND and RYAN O'NEAL lead a madcap cast (including screen-debuting MADELINE KAHN) on a zany quest that's like a classic screwball comedy - only screwier!

Farce made boring........2007-09-12
I guess people will vote "no" on this review because they don't agree, but here's my opinion:
Screwball/farce comedy can be great. And director Peter Bogdanovich is capable of making them; just look at "Noises Off". But "What's Up, Doc?" doesn't even come close. The script is a mess, it starts out with no introduction whatsoever of either the plot or the characters (all of which are annoying). It goes on as an unfunny farce for about half an hour, then it slows down with romantic scenes between Streisand and O'Neal. Then the farce starts again, stopping again for two long ending sequences, one in a courtroom and one in an airport. All of the farce scenes are enervating instead of funny and uses every cliché in the book, such as construction worker's walking arund with a window glass, getting in the way of a car chase.
"What's Up, Doc?" is a very overrated farce. All of the gags are recycled and were made better in other movies.
What's Up, Doc?.......2007-09-11
This is absolutely hilarious. I loved it the very first time that I saw it in a theater, back in 1972; and still do. I enjoy it everytime that I watch it. It's a great comedy, and I would highly recommend it for anyone's movie library.
FUNNY, FUNNY, FUNNY.......2007-08-15
This is one of the funniest movies made. The chase scene is manic and the courtroom scene is a comic classic. So many familiar faces. This is a must see!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Bringing Up Babsy.......2007-07-21
Let me preface my review by saying I have an innate loathing of Barbra Streisand. My reasons are manyfold not the least her excreable left-wing politics. Nobody was more gleeful than when Trey Parker and Matt Stone tweaked her on "South Park". Giving the devil her due La Babs in "What's Up Doc" is...tolerable. I watched this film mainly because I'm a big fan of Peter Bogdanovich. I love his reverence for old movies. Here Bogdanovich pays homage to the screwball comedies of the thirties and forties. His reference point here seems to be Howard Hawks' screwball masterwork, "Bringing Up Baby". Bogdanovich is audacious in trying to evoke this classic and he mostly succeeds. The films strength is in the script's witty verbiage. It falters slightly in the tired slapstick that permeates the latter part of the film. There's a great cast that Bogdanovich surrounds the diva with. Ryan O'Neal proves to be an adept light comedian here. Bogdanovich later employed O'Neal to better use in "Paper Moon" in 1973. Only Stanley Kubrick with "Barry Lyndon" seemed to fully utilize O'Neal's talents. The support here is a dream with Madeline Kahn, Kenneth Mars, Austin Pendleton, and John Hillerman. I particularly liked Liam Dunn in a small part as a harried judge. Not classic but a great homage to a style of comedy that will never go out of fashion.
Sight comedy at its very best!.......2007-04-23
For the first time in about 30 years I have seen this movie on DVD. I am glad I own a copy of this. Ryan O'Neil and Barbra Streisand are in simply hilarious in this 1972 comedy. Madeline Kahn was also a joy to watch in this film. Barbra can sing but she can really make you laugh with this! Enjoy!!

This 1969 film has never lost its popularity or its unusual appeal as a star-driven Western that tinkers with the genre's conventions and comes up with something both terrifically entertaining and--typical of its period--a tad paranoid. Paul Newman plays the legendary outlaw Butch Cassidy as an eternal optimist and self-styled visionary, conjuring dreams of banks just ripe for the picking all over the world. Robert Redford is his more levelheaded partner, the sharpshooting Sundance Kid. The film, written by William Goldman (The Princess Bride) and directed by George Roy Hill (The Sting), basically begins as a freewheeling story about robbing trains but soon becomes a chase as a relentless posse--always seen at a great distance like some remote authority--forces Butch and Sundance into the hills and, finally, Bolivia. Weakened a little by feel-good inclinations (a scene involving bicycle tricks and the song "Raindrops Keep Falling on My Head" is sort of Hollywood flower power), the movie maintains an interesting tautness, and the chemistry between Redford and Newman is rare. (A factoid: Newman first offered the Sundance part to Jack Lemmon.) --Tom Keogh
Description
Paul Newman and Robert Redford set the standard for the "buddy film" with this box office smash set in the Old West. The Sundance Kid (Redford) is the frontier's fastest gun. His sidekick, Butch Cassidy (Newman), is always dreaming up new ways to get rich fast. If only they could blow open a baggage car without also blowing up the money-filled safe inside... Or remember that Sundance can't swim before they escape a posse by leaping off a cliff into rushing rapids... Times are changing in the west and life is getting tougher. So Butch and Sundance pack their guns, don new duds, and, with Sundance's girlfriend (Katharine Ross), head down to Bolivia. Never mind that they don't speak Spanish - they'll manage somehow. A winner of four Academy Awards (including best screenplay and best song), here is a thoroughly enjoyable blend of fact and fancy done with true affection for a bygone era and featuring the two flashiest, friendliest funniest outlaws who ever called out "hands up!"

They Don't Make Them Like That Anymore.......2007-08-24
A western that will never be dated, this is one of the best American movies ever made -- existential, funny, with writing and a score that make it perpetually modern. Where are our new Paul Newmans and Robert Redfords? Young lions of Hollywood, please take a cue from these guys as both actors and men. Please.
Fabulous Classic.......2007-08-23
I know every line of this movie, and it is such a classic that everyone should see it (many times!).
