By its third season, The X-Files had grown from a cult hit to a global phenomenon, becoming the most popular show in many countries outside the U.S. Armed with the knowledge that the show was here to stay, series creator Chris Carter expanded its mythology, and the 24 episodes in this boxed set represent arguably the strongest of all the X-Files seasons. As usual, stand-alone episodes explored the paranormal and sometimes terrifying possibilities in mythology, pop culture, and religion. Darin Morgan helps the show to mature by expanding its use of humor, directing classic episodes such as "Clyde Bruckman's Final Repose" (featuring a fabulous performance from Peter Boyle) and "Jose Chung's 'From Outer Space.'" Meanwhile, two-part episodes continue to delve into the X-Files' own mythology, introducing the alien black oil, the implant in Scully's neck, the mysterious Agent X, and the shape-shifting Jeremiah Smith. But following the complex mythology is not crucial to enjoying the show. The strength of the X-Files lies not in resolution but in feeding the paranoia of its rabid audience by revealing conspiracies that linger in the mind as unanswered questions. Series creator Carter realized wisely that fans did not look to the X-Files to explain the unexplained, but to question that which they thought they understood. The third season was effective because it hinted that while the truth was out there, it was more complex, sinister, and amazing than even Mulder had imagined. --Eugene Wei

Description

This season, series creator Chris Carter expanded the mythology with plots like the alien black oil and Scully's implant, but also further developed the show's trademark humor and continued to explore paranormal possibilities.

4 out of 5 stars A good present for any X-files fan........2007-08-16

A solid season. I enjoy this season more than later ones because they have better lighting in these episodes making them easier to watch.

There are a few hilarious episodes -- some make me wonder if they were written to be funny or if it's just ridiculous, but either way, good for a laugh.

5 out of 5 stars One of their best seasons.......2007-08-07

As far as X-Files seasons were concerned, they were always sort of hit-and-miss. The 2nd season had a number of great episodes but they were usually surrounded by interesting but less than the standards they can set when they really deliver a great hour. The third season, while still having a couple of lulls, are surprisingly really slight and not as much of a detriment. From the mythology to the "stand-alones", this is probably one of the most consistent seasons and certainly one of their best.

The Blessing Way: Mulder's supposed death is dwelt on as well as Scully discovering something surprising in this great season premiere. 8/10
Paper Clip: Part 2 finds Mulder and Scully reunited and finding an elaborate project that they might be included in. 8/10
D.P.O: Rather average episode about a guy who can produce lightning-like powers. Saved by guest star Giovanni Ribisi and an actual dramatic performance from Jack Black. 6.5/10
Clyde Bruckman's Final Repose: A series classic as Peter Boyle plays a psychic with the ability to see the deaths of others. 9.5/10
The List: An average episode of a recently executed inmate who swore revenge on those who wronged him. 7/10
2Shy: Another meh episode about a guy who drains heavy women of fatty tissue. 6/10
The Walk: A great idea but somewhat underwhelming execution of a soldier who can astral project and kill others without moving anywhere. 7.5/10
Oubliette: Even if it's far-reaching even for this show, it's an underrated compelling tale of a former kidnap victim somehow psychically linked to another kidnap victim. 8/10

Nisei: Mulder learns of a secret medical project in boxcars while Scully learns more about her abduction. 9/10
731: A more tense episode as Mulder is found trapped in a boxcar with 2 interesting guests while Scully finds survivors of a medical program. 9/10
Revelations: Okay episode of a boy with religious-themed wounds that's hunted by a man believed to be one of the devil's disciples. 7/10
War of the Coprophages: A great episode as Mulder tracks down paranoia set on my cockroach visitations. Scully in cute jealous mode. 9/10
Syzygy: Deaths believed to be Satanic in nature but actually caused by girls with planetary-influenced abilities. Scully in antagonistic jealous mode. 7/10
Grotesque: Great character idea, ok story of Mulder's obsession to track down a killer saying he's possessed by a gargoyle spirit. 7.5/10
Piper Maru: Amazing episode and pivotal mythology one as Mulder discovers divers with severe radiation burns and an ever-changing alien being. 9.5/10
Apocrypha: Less ambitious but just as great conclusion as Mulder hunts Krycek, the digital tape seen in Blessing Way and a salvaged UFO. 9/10

Pusher: Classic villain centering on Robert Modell who can make anyone do what he wants: namely kill themselves. Joins Squeeze and Irresistible as some of the best memorable villain episodes. 9.5/10
Teso Dos Bichos: Rather meh episode of an indian artifact with a curse and a nasty killer from it. 6/10
Blood Money: Another meh episode as the agents track Chinese people who specialize in reluctant organ donors for a chance to win big at the lottery. 6/10
Jose Chung's "From Outer Space": Hard-to-follow but really kooky as the agents try to solve the abduction of 2 kids and the abductor of their would-be abductors. 9.5/10
Avatar: Skinner is a suspect when he wakes up next to a woman murdered while seeing visions of an old woman. Kinda good and one scene while Skinner's asleep is kinda creepy. 8/10
Quagmire: Pretty standard monster episode except for one scene with the 2 on the rocks makes it a worthwhile episode. Also final appearance of a beloved X-Files character. 8.5/10
Wetwired: A look into subliminal messages and violent behavior which starts to affect Scully. Gillian Anderson is great in this one. 8/10
Talitha Cumi: A good but not stellar finale as a man who healed people shot might come in handy when one of Mulder's loved ones falls ill. 8.5/10

Granted there is episodes like Hell Money, 2Shy and D.P.O which are maybe not as excellent as Coprophages, Pusher or Clyde Bruckman but then again some of the standalones like Oubliette and Quagmire are worth a watch so it's up to you whether to determine if this is a best season but from episode to episode, this is probably is their best.

5 out of 5 stars One of my favorite seasons.......2007-03-27

I like all of the X files, but especially the first few seasons, before it was picked up by mainstream Hollywood.

4 out of 5 stars The Mythology Continues to Evolve Amidst Humor.......2007-03-05

A decent continuation of the series, as the mythology continues to form. While there is plenty of stock fare involving "little greenish-gray men with oversized heads and eyes", the real stand-outs in this series are those involving quirky humor, both black and side-splitting. Some of these are:

Clyde Bruckman's Final Repose - A psychic serial killer stalks other psychics and fortune tellers, with reluctant psychic Clyde Bruckman, played to bizarre perfection by Peter Boyle, enlisted by Mulder to assist. Bruckman predicts Mulders means of death many years hence, involving a length of rope, some hand cream and an erotic video. One of the best of all nine seasons.
D.P.O. - Giovanni Ribisi and his "best bud" Jack Black are Beavis and Butt-Head types who while away their miserable lives by throwing lightning bolts at folks they don't like.
2Shy - A mysterious scholar feeds vampire like on women he meets through internet chat sites, siphoning off their body fat in order to survive. A (blackly) humorous study of online dating.
Revelations - Mulder and Scully reverse roles, as Scully funds herself drawn into a contest between a young stigmatic and the human personification of the Devil.
War of the Coprophages - Everyone hates cockroaches, and the producers of the show engage in a humorous free for all that will have your skin crawling. And what was that that just crawled across the TV screen? Genuinely funny episode.
Syzygy - Marcie and Terrie have a birthday on the worst of all possible days, from a cosmic perspective. A nod to the classic film, "Carrie". A very funny episode, and one of my favorites.

5 out of 5 stars Technical Notes On The Slim Sets.......2007-02-26

I wanted to point out something technical about the slim set discs that I bought. If you're looking for insight into the episodes or characters - please look elsewhere.

When I put the first disc of Season One into my DVD player, it started the "loading" process and gave me a disc error after about one minute. Instead of cursing Fox (well, I did it later anyway) I turned the player off, leaving the disc inside. After a couple of minutes, I turned my DVD player on and Viola! I heard the X-Files theme and saw the menus (after the obligatory FBI copyright infringement warnings).

For those wondering, the DVD player in question above is a Philips Progressive Scan. The same problem occurred on a newer Panasonic player. No glitches materialized when I tried the discs on the Sony or AKAI players. In all cases, I was eventually able to get to the episodes. With the first two the screen sometimes showed up scrambled and the menus inaccessible. On other occasions I was able to access a root menu similar to one you would see if you "explore" the DVD contents on a PC (Video_TS files, etc.), though the players would not load any content from these menus. Speaking of PC viewing, I experienced no problems with any of the discs on my PC and all four programs my PC has to play DVDs functioned perfectly.

PLEASE DON'T READ INTO THIS TOO MUCH. I don't work for Fox - I'm not trying to encourage sales of the more expensive sets. This was just a personal experience I had, and it seemed to occur less frequently with Seasons 4 - 9. My uneducated opinion: the equipment I have isn't top of the line, and maybe wasn't equipped to handle the way the content was compressed. I was impressed that 4, sometimes 5 episodes were squeezed on one disc. That's three - almost four hours of content. I know - dual layer DVDs and blah, blah, blah. But c'mon - even Lord of the Rings - Return of the King was issued on 2 discs! (By the way, the content looked and sounded great.)

Another side note: Seasons 1 - 4 that I got were full frame, and 5 - 9 are widescreen. At first I thought I had missed the option when purchasing these discs, but these are the only way I've found them at retail stores and online. Nothing major; I just thought I was losing my mind at first. (Which is still a possibility.) I can't remember if they aired this way on television - I just noticed that the cinematography got revved up a bit starting with Season 5. If this observation is incorrect, someone please feel free to correct me.

Okay. If you have read this entire review give yourself a pat on the back, a cookie, I dunno - watch some old Doctor Who episodes or something. A better price, better packaging, and better for you. (They were giving out a carton of Morley's with the bigger sets, right?) By the way - the 5 stars is based on my overall X-Files enjoyment. Sure, there are episodes I can skip through. But for me, it's good bang for the buck. Enjoy!

While the first season of The X-Files introduced us to Scully and Mulder, the second season finds the show confidently hitting its stride. Building on its earlier success, the show evolves, and in these 25 episodes, a glimpse is shown of a longer-running story line (which will continue through subsequent seasons) that is woven into the usual stand-alone episodes of the paranormal. These so-called mythology episodes hint at a global conspiracy involving sinister government agents, UFOs, alien abductions, genetic engineering, the ever-lurking Cigarette Smoking Man, and Fox Mulder's father. Season 2 fleshes out Mulder's family history, including the childhood abduction of his sister Samantha, an event that would shape him for life. Actress Gillian Anderson (Scully) became unexpectedly pregnant during season 2, but series creator Chris Carter managed to dance nimbly around her absence and even integrate it into the show. As in season 1, Mulder and Scully are surrounded by a strong supporting cast, which adds a suspicious new agent named Alex Krycek, an informant named X, and a seemingly indestructible alien bounty hunter.

Among the standout episodes are "The Host," "Duane Barry/Ascension," "Humbug," "Dod Kalm," "Colony/End Game," and "Anasazi." These episodes are a powerful reminder that The X-Files, like no other show on television, can span horror, suspense, mystery, romance, drama, and comedy, sometimes all in the same episode, and always with the production values of a major feature film. --Eugene Wei

Description

In this second season box set, Mulder and Scully get glimpses of the global conspiracy as they investigate UFO's, alien abductions, genetic engineering, and ominous government agents.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Not strongest season but good anyways.......2007-08-14

After the first season which there was a certain unease on whether the show would continue, the second season brought on more episodes (this is probably the most prolific season with 25 episodes made) and more ambitious storyline and adding to its continuing mythology arc. However, they haven't quite yet perfected the consistency of the episodes so many of this season has great episodes sandwiched with too many decent or just altogether poor ones.

Little Green Men: Probably one of their best premieres as Mulder heads to Puerto Rico in hopes to make contact and get proof. His night encounter is quite tense. 9/10
The Host: Might make you paranoid about using toilets when a strange mutated creature is found in the city's sewer systems. 8.5/10
Blood: First of many decent episodes when messages encouraging mayhem appear on electronic devices. 6/10
Sleepless: A great standalone idea married with some mythology aspects when soldiers are found that haven't slept in over 20 years. Introduction of X and Alex Krycek. 8.5/10
Duane Barry: A man who believes he was abducted holds hostages and Mulder plays negotiator. Great cliffhanger ending. 9/10
Ascension: With Scully kidnapped by Barry, Mulder goes on an emotional search trying to find her. 9/10
3: Mulder's first official case without Scully and he's chasing vampires and again, it's just simply decent. 6.5/10
One Breath: An amazing episode as Scully unexpectedly returns in severe condition and Mulder does much soul searching in trying to save her. Duchovny's acting in this is spot-on. 9.5/10

Firewalker: With Scully officially back, their first case reunited is a lame redo of the season 1 "Ice" only this time they're stranded near a volcano with a dangerous scientist running loose. 6/10
Red Museum: Ties into the mythology but the episode itself is kind of meh as missing kids have been appearing with the phrase "He/She is One" on them. 7/10
Excelsis Dei: Finally a good ghost episode when they investigate strange occurences in a nursing home. 7.5/10
Aubrey: A surprisingly good episode as a detective finds she's somehow linked with a criminal from the past. 7.5/10
Irresistible: A series classic as Donnie Pfaster, a "death fetishist" preys on the living to extract hair and fingernails, has his eyes set on Scully. Probably the creepiest villain the show has had. 9/10
Die Hand Die Verletzt: Another great episode as they investigate murders ritualistic in nature and the devil-worshipping faculty might have a real demon in their staff. 9/10
Fresh Bones: Another decent episode about voodoo being practiced among a refugee population. Kind of forgettable actually. 5.5/10
Colony: A great mythology episode where an alien bounty hunter arrives killing identical doctors and Mulder receives a surprising visit. Probably the best cliffhanger the show ever had. 9.5/10

End Game: Conclusion to Colony as Mulder finds out more about the work done and travels to Alaska to find the bounty hunter and hopefully the whereabouts of his sister. 9.5/10
Fearful Symmetry: Kind of a silly episode about invisible animals rampaging through town and the safety of a sign language-speaking gorilla. 6/10
Dod Kalm: An interesting episode akin to Darkness Falls or Quagmire where they're found stranded on a shape where they age rapidly. Mulder's reaction to Scully's homemade juice is priceless. 8/10
Humbug: Their first comedic episode finds the agents in circus town where bizarre murders are found with the residents being even stranger. 9/10
The Calusari: More decent as the agents investigate possible demonic possession inside a young boy. 6/10
F. Emasculata: An interesting episode where a highly fatal contagion spreads among prison inmates and Mulder's manhunt for a possible infected convict. 8.5/10
Soft Light: Another late season highlight as a man has a shadow that kills thanks to a physics accident. 8/10
Our Town: Kind of disgusting/meh episode where chickens are fed ground up humans in hopes of longer life.
Anazasi: A great finale centering on 2 events: the downloading of government files and a boxcar unearthed gets Mulder even more proof except he's progressively getting more paranoid and violent. Great cliffhanger. 9.5/10

As you can see, the majority of the season (to me personally) is kind of hit and miss. Now and then they nail it on the head with a great episode but then other times there's others that don't have as much re-watchable value. But season 2 is where they were starting to find their footing and so the consistency started to get better as the show went on.

5 out of 5 stars Incredible show.......2007-07-16

Really miss this show. This is one of those shows that made you start to question alot of things about how things are. Really glad I be able to have it on DVD now to watch whenever I want.

5 out of 5 stars More of the same white knuckle viewing........2007-03-18

`X-Files' Season 2, created by Chris Carter and starring David Duchovney and Gillian Anderson is entirely consistent in quality with Season 1, and everything I said about that release is true of this one as well.

One of the most distinguishing features of this season is that Ms. Anderson was pregnant throughout the first third of the season, and an arc of three shows was done to remove her from the scene while she was off on maternity leave. In spite of her delicate condition, the scripts continued to put her character and her costar into mortal danger in virtually every episode.

A second major distinction of this season is fact that `Deep Throat' from season 1 was killed off at the end of that season, to be replaced by a very similar character simply labeled `X'. This character was worked into the episodes when the `X-Files' unit of the FBI was reinstated about a third of the way into the season, just in time for Gillian to get back from her maternity leave.

The order of episode themes in this season is very similar to season 1, in that there is a rough alternation between Alien Visitor and homegrown weirdness. One of the very best episodes, `Humbug', which literally comes off as a comedy, involves virtually no paranormal activity at all. It almost seems like a take-off on the classic cult film `Freaks', made in the 1930s.

My biggest complaint about the premises underlying the entire series is the way in which agents of our government are split in four different antagonistic directions. First, there is the X-Files unit within the FBI, being our heroes, Muldur and Scully. Then there is the FBI hierarchy, represented primarily by Assistant Director Skinner. Then, there is the shadowy conglomerate of some other government agencies, primarily representing `the military', whose figurehead is `the cigarette smoking man'. Last, there is the `X' character, who represents some other shadowy conglomerate of government agencies who are seemingly on Muldur and Scully's side, but seem to offer nothing more than obscure clues and directions, when they feel like it (or more accurately, when the script needs a `deux ex machina' to move it along).

Another thing that tends to spoil things for me in some episodes is the degree to which the stories are stolen from other well-known works, the most common source being recent major films such as `The Exorcist'. I also get a bit antsy when a script misuses some arcane piece of scientific theory, as when `End Game' plays off the notion of `dark matter'. On the other hand, the season closing cliff-hanger episode manages to steal a march on a later film, `The Code Talkers', based on the use of the Navaho language as a code in the Pacific Theatre of Operations, which, according to both dramatic works, the Japanese were never able to crack or translate.

On the other hand, I really enjoy the occasional appearance of some interesting character actors in lead roles now and then. For example, I loved seeing `Mr. Monk' (Tony Shalhoub) in `End Game' and William Sanderson (an important minor character in `Blade Runner' and `Larry' from `Newhart') in the episode, `Blood', just as it was a gas to see Bradley Whitford as the leading guest character in a season 1 show.

Just like most modern dramas, one of the best features is the rapport between the two principal characters. This chemistry is shown in many ways, some quite subtle, as when both characters constantly answer their calls to their partner with the statement `It's me.' They even use this greeting when they meet one another unexpectedly. This rapport is often a major part of episodes, especially since one or both major characters is so often getting into perilous and quite deadly situations.

The extras are not `great', but they are interesting. The best thing about the set is that it is an excellent presentation of episodes from a major TV series. I will reinforce the impressions of other reviewers that this is done well, since they have probably seen more different series than I.

This series has become a minor milestone in TV history. It is not quite as iconic as `The Twilight Zone', but it is stronger than its inspiration, `The Night Stalker'. To my lights, it is also in general superior as Science Fiction than most `Star Trek' episodes from its various incarnations. I think it is more rewatchable than many series, if not quite as addicting for me as `The West Wing'.

3 out of 5 stars GOOD BUT..........2007-03-16

Things to consider about this product:
- Image and sound are not so good, especially because it's an old programme.
- It's 2.1 and not 5.1
- The package (the boxes) are too thin.
- It's much cheaper than the collector's edition but it does not include something important for collectors, the 7th CD with the extras!!
- I still do not understand why FOX overprices the collector's edition and makes it impossible for us to buy it. I think it is too expensive!! Besides if they want to save money in packaging, why did they eliminate the 7th cd? How much money can it cost to add that CD? Please!!!
- The series is excellent and worth watching.

In the first season of The X-Files, creator Chris Carter was uncertain of the series' future, so each of the episodes is a self-contained suspense story; they do not delve deep into the ongoing X-Files mythology or turn to self-parody and humor as do episodes in later seasons. Yet, these episodes display the elements for which the show would become famous: the cinematic production values and top-notch special effects, the stark lighting of the Vancouver sets, the atmospheric halo of Mark Snow's score, and the clever plots dealing with subjects ranging from the occult, religion, and monsters to urban legends, conspiracy theories, and science fiction. Most importantly, season 1 introduces FBI agents Dana Scully (Gillian Anderson) and Fox "Spooky" Mulder (David Duchovny), two of the most attractive government officials around. Scully is the serious-minded medical scientist assigned to join Mulder on the X-Files, a division of the FBI dealing with the paranormal. Mulder is the intuitive thinker with a dry wit, a passionate believer in the existence of paranormal phenomena and one of the few characters on television smart enough to figure out who the bad guy is before the audience does. Their muddled relationship, a deep friendship laced with sexual tension, provides the human heart in a world where the bizarre and horrible lurk in everyday society.

Those unfamiliar with The X-Files often view all the fuss with the same skepticism with which Scully first regards her new partner's ideas. But just as she comes to realize the uncanny accuracy of Mulder's outlandish theories, newcomers to The X-Files who sample a few episodes in this boxed set will likely find themselves riveted to their television late into the night. And undoubtedly, the shadows and creaking noises in the house that evening will seem more menacing than usual. --Eugene Wei

5 out of 5 stars Quite Nice.......2007-09-08

It's the X-files, it's inexpensive, and it's sleek. What is there not to like?

5 out of 5 stars X-Files.......2007-08-28

I can't believe I got the whole first season for so cheap. Well worth more.

4 out of 5 stars Little DVD content.......2007-08-25

The earlier reviews to the left were obviously made w/o the authors having viewed the slim-set editions. There is very little extra DVD content on these disks--a few foreign-language clips on a handful of episodes is all. There are no interviews, no episode commentaries, no special features. If you're looking only for the episodes or want to save some money, this slim-set edition is for you. However, if you've come to expect DVD extras with your TV series', then spend the extra money on the boxed sets.

3 out of 5 stars Season one is just a warm-up...but still may be considered required viewing........2007-07-22

I wasn't blown away by the X-files when it debuted in 1993, but I did see its potential. And all these years later it is still a little fun to see how it all began.
However I don't think it really took off until the second and third seasons. In a way, it has become required viewing to see how Mulder and Scully met, and there are half a dozen episodes out of the 24 that I think are quite good.
My favorite episode from season one? Darkness Falls, one of the many variations on "The Thing" that The X-files did. Mulder and Scully investigate the disappearances of an entire camp of loggers. Mulder says: "That's a lot of flannel to choke down, even for Bigfoot." I won't reveal much more except to say that their disappearance wasn't due to eco-terrorists but something they unintentionally stirred up in the forest.
The X-files is something that, if you love unconventional sci-fi with interesting creatures, you HAVE to appretiate, even in this developing phase that is the first season.
But the REALLY good stuff (the Fluke Man, Scully's abduction, and Jose Chung's From Outer Space) come after this warm-up, as interesting as it is for a starting point.

5 out of 5 stars gotta love this show.......2007-07-16

Is this not one of the best shows ever made. The first season was a bit dry starting out, but once the chemistry really kicked in it was magic.

This is by far my favorite season overall. X-Files fans will not be disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars Expect the unexpected.......2007-05-08

As each of the seasons progress, X-Files just gets better and better. Mulder and Scully don't dispoint. This season contains episodes that get you on the edge of your seat. X-Files takes your imagination beyond the world of Science Fiction. Expect the unexpected.

5 out of 5 stars X-Cool.......2007-03-20

It was so cool i bought the whole series. the package got here in time and it plays great! Excellent job! Excellent!!

5 out of 5 stars conduct.......2007-03-08

The fourth season has all of it. Cancer, the smoking mans past, school kids getting whipped out by a disease carried by bees, and yes all other sorts of Mulder/Scully goodness. Almost complete perfection has been met by Chris Carter along with fellow writers and actors in this season.

Enjoy!

Following the X-Files feature film in the summer of 1998, "The Beginning" quickly crowbars an attempt at fitting the film into the TV chronology before it picks up plot points left dangling from the fifth-season finale, "The End" (note the guard asleep at the nuclear power plant console is named Homer!). Between arc threads are several pleasing excursions: time travel to a Bermuda Triangle boatload of Nazis ("Triangle"), further temporal escapades akin to Groundhog Day ("Monday"), a demonic baby case featuring genre stalwart Bruce Campbell ("Terms of Endearment"), and Duchovny being able to play someone else via personality switching ("The Dreamland, Parts 1 and 2"). Back in the real scheme of things, Mulder chases "S.R. 819," a Senate resolution tying conspiracies together. "Two Fathers" and "One Son" indicate that the abductee experiments are intended to cure the black oil disease. The year finishes with "BioGenesis," in which we're asked to ponder, are we from Mars? A beach-buried UFO leaves Scully wondering. --Paul Tonks

5 out of 5 stars The Best Season!.......2007-08-25

The X-Files is at their creative peak on season 6. Season 6 features hilarious midadventures, an unexpected heart warming episode about confused love, and every episode has an interesting mystery to solve. I also liked the selection of slimey creatures that were featured in some of these episodes.

I liked season 7 almost as much as season 6. So check out season 7 for good entertainment. Season 2 is also suggested.

5 out of 5 stars Best season ever!.......2007-08-04

[...] Out of all 9 seasons of The X-Files, I would have to say that season 6 was my favorite. Season 6 was the season after The X-Files movie, Fight the Future (Released Summer 1998).

While I enjoyed almost all of the episodes during season 6, I would have to say there are quite a few that stand out from the rest. These episodes include:

Triangle - Mulder goes to the Bermuda Triange when he learns that the Queen Anne, a British luxury liner which disappeared during WWII, has re-appeared in the middle of the Sargasso Sea. Mulder's boat is wrecked and after floating in the water, he is hauled aboard the ship which has just been hijacked by the Nazis searching for the man who will build the atom bomb. Mulder tries to convince the crew that they have traveled into the future but evidence further suggests that it is he, who is back in the past.

Dreamland 1&2 - While being detained near the famed "Dreamland" Area 51, a strange craft flies overhead and Mulder swaps bodies with an Area 51 'Man-in-Black'. While the other agent has fun in Mulder's body, Mulder himself finds it difficult to fit into someone else's life, especially a shadowy one.

How the Ghosts Stole Christmas - Mulder talks Scully into investigating a haunted house on Christmas Eve where several couples have met their fate on that very night. While there they encounter endless tricks and traps set by a ghostly couple who originally made a lovers suicide pact in the house, and they try to convince Mulder and Scully to kill each other.

Arcadia - On their first official case back on the X-Files, Mulder and Scully go undercover as a married couple at a prestigious planned community where several residents have recently disappeared after failing to comply with the rules and regulations.

Monday - A woman is forced to relive the same day over and over as she tries to prevent Mulder and Scully from being killed by her boyfriend during a bank robbery attempt; and as the events restart again and again, Mulder's sense of Deja-vu grows stronger.

Milagro - A writer living next to Mulder becomes obsessed with Scully and confesses to her that he is using her for a character in his novel. Scully finds herself strangely drawn to him even though he is now the prime suspect in the murder case that she and Mulder are investigating.

The Unnatural - Mulder meets with Agent Arthur Dales' brother (also named Arthur!) and is told a tale of a talented negro baseball player from Roswell, New Mexico in the 1940's who may have been an alien that ran away from his colony because of his love for the game. (Written and Directed by David Duchovny).

By the end of this DVD set, you'll want to stay away from the Bermuda Triangle, stay clear of Area 51, be afraid of storms, refuse to go to the bank on Monday, and you'll be convinced that all of the greatest baseball players of all time are/were aliens.

5 out of 5 stars Pick up where the Movie left off... alien baseball players... and this season has Bruce Campbell!.......2007-07-08

Remember before moving onto Season 6, you are supposed to watch X Files the movie first!

The X-Files Collection is a worthy hobby and next to Star Trek is certainly one of largest of the television series DVD collections, running an extra two seasons longer than the maximum seven season Star Trek series. Although The X-Files is not the longest running television media franchise, it can boast being one of the longest running SF series airing for nine seasons between 1993 and 2002. At around 1100 minutes per box, you are looking at approx. 9 boxes with 165 hours of viewing. That is nearly 1 full week of non-stop X-Files. Very few DVD series can come even remotely close to that. Get going collecting right now and you could build up the series collection in no time. By the end you will have a television paranormal anthology that defines the word awe. This is the kind of item that requires 1 hour a day of your time over the course of a year. The X-Files creator Chris Carter nails a powerful television series premise, setting up a fringe paranormal bureau of investigation that is at odds with its own department, the government, the military and just about everyone else, with the immortal tagline "The truth is out there". Fox "Spooky" Mulder (David Duchovny) is the workaholic basement-dwelling good-looking nerd with a heart of gold and a mind for the criminal macabre, all things supernatural and who runs the X-Files department. He is teamed with Dana Scully (Gillian Anderson), the rational doctor turned FBI agent who is asked to write reports on the X-Files cases by her cynical boss. Most episodes play along with the theme of Mulder witnessing a paranormal event while Dana gradually arrives on the scene only after it is over, missing it all, or discovering something odd at best. This kind of regular plot occurrence bonds the characters and is what makes The X-Files so enjoyable. There are some improvements since the Season III DVD case with a seventh bonus disc now inside a cardboard holder and not just sitting in a slot in a piece of card that falls out easily like in Season I and II, bouncing around the box. Season V actually has the bonus disc in with actual holder itself. Not all boxes have this bonus seventh disc item. It depends on the edition. The more important six discs with episodes are firmly in place in a plastic flip case inside a thick season box that slides into a wider cardboard presentation holder for the shelf and looks quite good. Although the inside is slightly flimsy, these DVDs are presented on the cheap and so economically The X-Files seasons are sound value for money but the presentation is nothing to brag about and when we get around to seeing what is on the discs we will not be so blown away either. There are 4 episodes per disc, and 6 episode discs in total, making an average of 25 episodes for most seasons. Some seasons have more or less than this figure. Some discs have a few deleted scenes... and that is about it. On the episode discs there are no commentaries and not much in the way of bonus material except for some international clips with Mulder and Scully speaking in Japanese for a scene. They could have at least provided us with the X-Files remastered in 5:1 Dolby Digital but have instead just presented the series as it was aired in 2:1 surround. Again, everything here is on the cheap. The transfer quality however is very good for most of it. Since the show was shot in full frame until Season 5. Season 5 is the first X-Files season to go Widescreen 1.78:1 and Season 6 retains this new widescreen setting.

X-Files: Season six has Mulder reconstructing a private X Files after the destruction of his affairs at the end of Season five. This is very much an alien invasion packed season. Mulder is back and believing that the hegemony and the alien colonization of planet Earth is not a con but a real threat and no longer sees it as just being a government propaganda vehicle. Scully's back to her critical ways. The Cigarette-Smoking Man (William B. Davis) shows up again. Assistant Director Walter S. Skinner (Mitch Pileggi) is back for more director of FBI lecturing the bizarre duo. `The Lone Gumen' John Fitzgerald Byers (Bruce Harwood), Melvin Frohike (Tom Braidwood) and Richard 'Ringo' Langly (Dean Haglund) are back. Alex Krycek (Nicholas Lea) makes a return. Special Agent Jeffrey Spender (Chris Owens) has more screentime who alongside Agent Diana Fowley (Mimi Rogers) have been assigned the X Files which they ignore and censor. Apart from the main theme of an alien conspiracy the single episodes stand out as some of the funniest of the X Files seasons. Season six of the X-Files is mostly about - Alien hegemony, sonic death, time travel, altered states, demons, weather, ghosts, photography, poisons, astral projections, leviathans, killer dogs, fantasies, the lone gunmen, baseball playing aliens, hallucinogens and alien artefacts. The episodes are so good it is hard to pick out the best of the lot. The episode "Rain Man" is absolutely hilarious. "Terms Of Endearment" features Bruce Campbell who is excellent in everything and it is a pity they didn't keep his character on for more. "Tithonus", about a crime scene photographer, is quite creepy. "SR 819" is like the movie DOA featuring Skinner dying from a mystery illness. "Arcadia" is about a strict neighbourhood that hides a secret monstrosity. "Agua Mala" is one of the best monster hunting episodes to date. "The Unnatural" is the classic episode where a black baseball player is really an alien. Season 6 is worth every penny. If you thought the X Files couldn't get better then this one puts the X back in the files.

5 out of 5 stars Best Show Ever!.......2007-06-18

Correct me if I am wrong, but this series was one of the best TV events ever! (I was not old enough to appreciate the first moon walk). The DVD set is well packaged and includes lots of fun extras. A good value too. A must have for any fan. BTW, agent Scully just keeps getting hotter and Mulder even more sarcastic!

5 out of 5 stars X-Files Rules!.......2007-05-20

I became a true "X-filer" late in the game...after it was no longer a regular series. (Wait... Can "X-Files" ever truly be considered regular?)
This particular season carries SEVERAL of my favorite episodes, so it is really worth the money. If you are a fan, this is one collection you should definitely have.

The midpoint of what would be a nine-season show, the fifth season of The X-Files (the first to be put on DVD in anamorphic widescreen format) gives fans a heavy heaping of what they love. For the mythology buffs, riveting episodes from the season bookends "Redux" and "The End" to several episodes in between tease with new revelations about the vast government conspiracies and alien invasion plot lines sketched in earlier seasons. But enough questions are left unanswered for the theatrical X-Files movie, which was released the subsequent summer, and the seasons that followed. Supporting characters like the Lone Gunmen, Agent Krycek, the Pusher Robert Modell, and Fox's father and sister Bill and Samantha Mulder are flushed out in more detail in several episodes that occasionally jump back in time to cover the prehistory of the X-files. New chess pieces are introduced, each raising new questions: the clairvoyant child Gibson Praise, Agent Spender, faceless alien resistance fighters with pyromaniacal tendencies, a child who may be Scully's, and Mulder's old flame, agent Diana Fowley (Mimi Rogers). All the time, no one knows who will be assassinated next, who is or isn't dead, just who isn't potentially a child of the Cigarette Smoking Man, and why the base of the neck is everyone's vulnerable spot. The creature feature stand-alone episodes vary in quality, but all are redeemed by the outrageously funny self-parody episode "Bad Blood," a fan favorite that guest stars Luke Wilson as a small-town sheriff who catches Scully's eye.

Finally, "shippers" (fans who would love nothing better than to see Mulder and Scully act upon their feelings for each other) get a heavy dose of the usual sexual innuendo and lingering, tender glances between the attractive costars. Mimi Rogers and Luke Wilson incite palpable jealousy between the leads; the appearance of a wedding band on Mulder's hand in a back story hints at stories not told; and the usual extreme and dimly lit crises illustrate just how far Mulder and Scully will go for each other. In the end, the complexities of their relationship may be the most tense and intriguing of all the mysteries explored by this epic television series. --Eugene Wei

They could have at least provided us with the X-Files remastered in 5:1 Dolby Digital but have instead just presented the series as it was aired in 2:1 surround. Again, everything here is on the cheap. The transfer quality however is very good for most of it. Since the show was shot in full frame until Season 5, these dimensions are retained. Season 5 is the first X-Files season to go Widescreen 1.78:1

X-Files: Season five follows in the steps of Season two, produces a virtually unstoppable series of great episodes, now that it has been firmly established as mainstream TV series viewing. Although the `to be continued ending' of Season four is not the best beginnings to a season, and the first few episodes are a bit dodgy, this is all forgiven when the screenwriters decide to go back and follow in the steps of Season 2's acclaim. There is a crazy role reversal. Mulder believes that the hegemony and the alien colonization of planet Earth is a con to detract from what is simply a series of government experiments on the citizens of planet Earth and the alien agenda just subterfuge. Scully however is absolutely convinced that Mulder was right all long and so takes the lead role as the paranormal investigator while Mulder turns sceptic. This character switch works wonders and kudos to the screenwriters for doing it. The Cigarette-Smoking Man (William B. Davis) is dead as is Mr X (Steven Williams), however packs of Morley's turn up from time to time. Assistant Director Walter S. Skinner (Mitch Pileggi) is more aware that something paranormal is going on and even sides with Scully when Mulder lambastes both for being delusional. Marita Covarrubias (Laurie Holden) has a secret. `The Lone Gumen' John Fitzgerald Byers (Bruce Harwood), Melvin Frohike (Tom Braidwood) and Richard 'Ringo' Langly (Dean Haglund) are back and even have their own private episode of how they came to be together. The Well-Manicured Man (John Neville from "The Adventures of Baron Munchausen") is back and Alex Krycek (Nicholas Lea) has another surprise in store. Deep Throat (Jerry Hardin) is gone, long since dead, however Section Chief Scott Blevins (Charles Cioffi) from Season 1 (and a bit of Season 4) is back for a very important double episode. There is also the introduction of Special Agent Jeffrey Spender (Chris Owens) who also plays a significant role. Robert Modell (Robert Wisden) from Season Two's Pusher is back.

The X-files season five is some of the best X-files to date. More conspiracy and more major revelations, means that you will be hooked from disc 2 onwards, right to the staggering finale. There are also a few supporting actors you have seen in movies. And yes, thankfully after 3 seasons of Scully's overrun cancer suffering, this is about to come to an end. Season five of the X-Files is mostly about - pre-X files back stories, Scully's cancer, mothman, mystery offspring, Frankenstein, Modell the pusher, psychotherapy, witchcraft, AI, vampires, extraterrestrial wars, hoasting alien experiments, blind psychics, Angels and Demons, government toxins, monsters and ESP. Episodes "Kitsunegari", "Kill Switch", "Bad Blood" and "All Souls" stand out as great non-conspiracy episodes, but the final episode is one of the best conspiracy episodes to date. The best episode is "Folie À Deux" which has a terrific monster story and some really mad special effects for a television episode. Season 5 is all top stuff. Remember before moving onto Season 6, you are supposed to watch X Files the movie first! After the movie, then go on to Season 6.

Enjoy!

5 out of 5 stars X-Files Season 7 still has the original feeling of the series.......2007-09-02

Some people think the X-files went down hill after Season 6. I bought season 7 with some misgivings. After a weak start with the brain attack episodes the series goes back to its original premise (unraveling the para-normal) with some brilliant and often funny episodes. This season is well worth buying.

5 out of 5 stars X-Files Season 7.......2007-07-16

As a long time fan of the show I thought it opportune to revisit the show and collect every season on DVD. I had recollected such intricasies in the constantly evolving plot lines that I had to pinpoint as an adult. Not only that, I felt it redeeming to watch each episode in order to witness progress of the storyline. The seventh season of X-Files is hands down a great set of dvd's to own, all the seasons are. The X-files is the best science fiction show ever created. But in particular, this season's evolving plot lines somewhat dry out. There are characters, bad guys if you will, that seem to be missing from the previous seasons. Over time these characters appeared more and more to be essential in Mulder's quest for the truth. Chris Carter refers to his original ongoing plot lines as "mythologies". The alien mythologies are somewhat left out and critical elements are exposed and Mulder doesn't seem to care
to follow those points up. The show however had reached it's cinematographic best and special effects were very well done. The appearance (color, panning, frames per second) were really nailed to give the show a very intriguing, yet subtle feel. If you were to choose between buying one or two movies as oppose to a slim set season of X-Files, I would go with this show because overall it really keeps you wanting more, which it winds up giving you. FAVORITE EPISODES: "The Sixth Extinction II: Amor Fati" "Closure" "X-Cops" "En Ami" "Chimera" "Je Souhaite"

5 out of 5 stars The Mulder Abduction (where David Duchovny leaves the show).......2007-07-11

This season is in Widescreen 1.78:1

X-Files: Season seven is full of Special Agent Mulder but effectively he leaves the X Files at the end of this season only to make guest star appearances in the next two seasons, so this is the last season to see Mulder full-time. Season seven begins with Mulder facing a problem of an extraterrestrial telepathy that threatens his life. Scully is off trying to discover the meaning of life in terms of new facts that have presented themselves in religion and biology. A whole pile of questions concerning the alien agenda are answered in the first few episodes and what happened to Mulder's sister. The Cigarette-Smoking Man (William B. Davis) is back along with Assistant Director Walter S. Skinner (Mitch Pileggi). `The Lone Gumen' John Fitzgerald Byers (Bruce Harwood), Melvin Frohike (Tom Braidwood) and Richard 'Ringo' Langly (Dean Haglund) make a few shows. Alex Krycek (Nicholas Lea) makes a return. Special Agent Jeffrey Spender (Chris Owens) is dead as is Agent Diana Fowley (Mimi Rogers). Season seven of the X-Files is mostly about - Alien hegemony, telepathy, mutants, luck, Millennium's Frank Black, speed, demons, magicians, Christian snake handling, Mulder's sister, reality TV, computer games, celtic voodoo, cure for cancer, wild women, love, Hollywood, tobacoo, fighting, genies and Mulder's abduction. This Season changes to try and provide a new type of humour halfway through and so the style changes along with the X files / Cops hybrid show and the mixing in of Millennium (You may want to see all of Millennium before you watch this Season as it ended before Season 7). Season 7 has a lot to offer. Of course it really all hinges on the two episodes `Closer' about Mulder's Sister and Mulder's finale in `Requiem'. Season 7 is probably the oddest of the Seasons because of the pace changes and David Duchovny resigning himself for only guest star roles in the last two Seasons (apparently he wanted to do other things). It is sad to think that this is the end to Spooky and we have enjoyed being with him now for a run of 7 Seasons which lasted 7 years. Still he does show up in the other two Seasons so pressing on we still want to find out what Dana has yet to uncover about alien conspiracy in Season 8 without the Fox.

4 out of 5 stars Believe to Understand.......2007-04-26

Season 7 picks up right where the Season 6 finale left off in a three parter. That means that it continues the same confusing and sometimes ridiculous plot of that finale. It seems those writing these three episodes started to write the first things that came to mind instead of what the actual best direction for the story would've been. That said, many people believe the series started to decline here; I disagree. The only thing that's really a letdown is the amount of mythology episodes. There are only 4 or 5. It's sort of hard to say much about the mythology direction that this season goes. There is a two-parter where Mulder finally figures out what happens to his sister, resulting in one of the most poignantly filmed moments in the series. Other than that, very little new information is given by the mythology episodes. Fortunately, the season finale, Requiem, takes things back to the basics for the mythology and ends up being one of the best (if not the best) episodes in the season. There is really no appearance at all of "the black oil" and very little appearances by the Cigarette Smoking Man. Mulder and Scully become a lot closer together in this season, but it's mainly through the stand alone episodes, which began to outweigh the merit of the mythology episodes around season 6. Most of them are just great, like Hungry, which is from the perspective of the monster, and David Duchovney's hilarious Hollywood A.D. Gillian Anderson's "all things" is a very good episode as well about Scully reflecting on her choices in life. And the bad episodes like the horribly written First Person Shooter and the irritating Fight Club are here as usual. This season CONTAINS THE SPECIAL FEATURES just like in season 6. They are on the same disc as the last two episodes here.

Notably Good Episodes:

Hungry
Millennium
Rush
The Goldberg Variation
The Amazing Maleeni
Sein und Zeit
Closure
X-COPS
En Ami
all things
Brand X
Hollywood A.D.
Je Souhaite
Requiem

This season comes recommended to anyone who has enjoyed the past seasons.

4 out of 5 stars Hits and Misses.......2007-04-24

Season 7 is uneven, with epsiodes ranging from the silly ("First Person Shooter") to the solid ("Hunger") to the sublime ("Sein und Zeit"/"Closure"). On the whole, serious X-Files fans will want to own this set.

The definitive American television series of the '90s comes to the big screen with an anticlimactic whimper. And how could it be otherwise? Why should material so perfectly realized in one medium necessarily translate well into another? The series is crisply and thoughtfully executed in just about every detail, but the heart of its appeal lies in the elegant handling of complicated and evolving ongoing story lines, which is not something movies are especially good at. The big-screen drive for closure cramps the creative style, though it may also help nonfans get a grip on the proceedings. We do get some invigorating thrills and chills, however, and a more satisfying sense of the scale of an all-enveloping human-alien conspiracy than ever before, but there's no more plot development here than in an average two-part season-ending. FBI black sheep Mulder and Scully have been temporarily transferred from the X-Files project to an anti-terrorist unit to investigate an Oklahoma City-style bombing. They uncover a new wrinkle in the Syndicate/Cancer Man conspiracy--basically an attempt to help one bunch of (benign?) aliens fight off another bunch who want to colonize Earth. A spectacular, ice-bound finale thrillingly staged by series-veteran director Rob Bowman offers Mulder (but not a conveniently unconscious Scully) his first clear look at a You Know What, which in some quarters qualifies as an epochal event. Martin Landau offers the agents some crucial clues, and several familiar TV faces (including the Lone Gunmen and Mitch Pileggi's indispensable Assistant Director Skinner) turn up briefly to wink knowingly at faithful fans. --David Chute

Description

Thirty-seven thousand years ago, a deadly secret was buried in a cave in Texas. Now the secret has been unleashed. And it's discovery may mean the end of all humanity.

"The plague to end all plagues"

When a terrorist bomb destroys a building in Dallas, Texas, FBI Agents Fox Mulder (David Duchovny) and Dana Scully (Gillian Anderson) are drawn into a dangerous co
